Printing

I have a layout with delivery address and invoice address both with fields for address lines etc. I can copy from delivery address into invoice address by a script which goes to the relevant field in the deliv address sets a variable then goes to the corresponding field in invoice address and populates the fiels with set field. When I put the invoice address fields on a print layout as merge fields they don't show up. If I type directly into the fields then this does show up. Does anyone know why this is happening?

there is a database that has fields in it that vary in the length For instance, a department could have a field that is only 2 characters (like "na" for not applicable) and another department could have an entry for that same field that is over 6,000 characters long. How do I make a printout that is presentable to both departments, without cutting off any values? Thanks in advance

I installed the generic win print to print to a text file and followed the instructions. it can print from other applications but from filemaker it doesn't. i tried a different virtual driver like: Miraplacid Text Driver 2009 and it did print well. any issues with printing from file to text in filemaker and windows? I have a major problem and I need all the help I could find. I am developing an invoice printing program. All the program is running on a mac. The hole project involves inventory, costs etc. The problem in that here in Greece in order to print an invoice we have to use a special printer that can be installed only in windows boxes. Hi ! Is it possible to print an invoice which has multiple pages ? In the first page there is a header followed by the items and in the bottom of the last page a footer with total sum etc. In between there is only the items. The problem is that if in the last page there is left only a few item rows, the footer is printed in the middle of the page - not to the bottom as I would like it to be. How to "attach" the footer to the bottom of the last page ?

Hello! I have a multi-tabled solution which is aimed at producing a template for budget creation. The tables are related to a budget report layout which consists of a hell of a lot of calc fields inside a single record. I have a solution in FM 9 that print reports and labels to different printers from within a script. In FM 9, all worked well - reports went to a laser printer and the label to the label printer. After upgrading to 10, things aren't working well. Now when the script is run, the report prints to the laser and then to the label printer, but the next item in the script should print back on the laser, but it prints on the label printer. We've tried resetting all of the page setup/print script steps while in 10 with no luck. I don't even know if this is possible. I have a standard report. Let's say it has name, grade, type. If I sort by type I need a total between each typw. If I sort by grade I need totals between grades. I don't suppose there's a magical way to do this on one layout? I know I could set up headings (grade, type) so that they sort if you click on them. I don't knwo how to have different sub summaries. Figured I'd take the chance and ask. Mike

Hi, I having trouble to setup the printing options on one of my solution. In a script, I set up the right printer, but when someone else in the office use the script, FM doesn't send the printing job to the right printer. Does anyone have a solution for this issue? I was thinking of saving everything in a PDF and print the file via command line, but I couldn't fine a way to change the paper size. Thanx for any help!

I am creating a database to keep track of large vessel inspections and hit a snag on the reporting. The database consists of the following tables: 1-Equipment: Equipment information 2-Inspections: Summary of results/conclusions 3-Areas: Detailed results for each area (manhole) 4-Problems: Problems that need action 5-Recommendations: Recommendation for each problem I tried to create a subsummary report with the layout showing records from "recommendations". Snag is that sometimes I do not have any problems or recommendations. When this happens, the information in the "areas" and "inspection" subsummary does not show up (obviously). Any ideas? …

I can find no reason that Monotype Corsiva typeface should not print. It does prints fine from text that is simply typed into the body of the layout, but refuses to print when selected as the font for any field. This holds true on multiple Windows machines, different FM Pro files, and both FM Pro 9 & 10. This is a Windows signed TT font. The typeface shows up fine in preview mode and saves fine to a pdf file, but it always reverts to Arial when sent to the printer. Other typefaces selected present no problem. Has anyone else experienced this?

After updating form 6 to 8. Every time I open the database in 8 it asks me if I want to use the file or system settings (for time and date). Is there a way to permanently fix this?

I have to print small icons, so I uploaded a 300 DPI version of it and I noticed the print result was very ugly. So I did some test and noticed when I uploaded a 72 and 300 DPI version of the same pic, the 300 DPI version is smaller, which means the FileMaker layouts work in inch instead of pixels. But then when I print it doesn't look that much better. Does FileMaker do some kind of post-processing on the picture and makes them low-res? or did I miss something? My icons are very very small... about 9x6 pixels.

Hi everyone I don't seek to trouble you often but I have a label printing problem with a simple 6 field column address list which will insist on only printing one and a half columns and I know it will be something simple but am fast losing the will to live looking for it. Ok so here is my delema. I just got another computer hooked up into my network. I use 5 separate printers for different items but of course the default printer I use most of all. However, when I print to another printer it still goes to the default printer. In order to print to the other printer I have to delete my default and make the other printer my default. After I do this then reinstall the printer everything works fine until I shutdown for the night and restart in the morning. Any ideas on how to fix this. I tried searching but no topics gave any clues on how to fix it.

I have a few different FMP databases I use to print out records including images in container fields. The printed image quality from one of my files is clearly inferior to another, and in exploring the Print dialogue box I find that when I look to "Quality & Media" options, the "High" Print Quality radio button is greyed out -- all that's anabled is "Standard" and "Custom". This is not the case in my other file that prints out nicely, and for which the "High" quality button is selected. What's up with that? Hi, Is it possible to include a page break in a text field? FM has a very handy "new line" symbol but apprently no page break symbol. I saw a post somewhere enabling a copy/paste of the page break symbol with BBedit for Macs. Is there anything similar - or better - for Windows? (Our printers are PCL 5e lasers.) TIA Bobbby

I'm sure there must be a simple solution, but I can't figure out how to see the results of changes made in a layout without first saving the layout. Once it's saved and I view it, how can I revert the layout to the "pre-edited" state (without having to manually change all the edits back) if I don't like the changes I made? Thanks in advance.

I have a report with a column of numbers. The field is set to right align but the numbers, depending on the number, do not right align. Some numbers are out by one pixel. Enough to be noticeable on the printout. If I use a fixed font like courier it is ok. Using Tahoma or Arial makes for the misalignment. I also tried a test with a text field and same results. I inserted the vertical line in the3 image so it would be easier to see the problem. Any suggestions. I had to do a link as I couldn't figure out how to insert an image. Image of report

Hi All: I would like to replicate the print range functionality of MS Word in FM Pro 8.5. FM print ranges are limited to successive pages only (i.e. print page 1-5). It does not allow entering a print range 1-5, 7-9, 10-50 etc. with some pages skipped in the same batch (as in MS Word). I can write a script to print pages 1-5, then 7-9, then 10-50 and have them come out on the printer just fine, but this doesn't work when my print output is PDF because it would generate 3 separate PDFs for each record. Merging the separate PDFs into one document can be done manually, but would take forever if there are a large number of records being printed from the databa…

I have a report that utilizes sliding portals. To make sure that all entries from the related table shows up on the print, I have set it up to show 100 entries in the portal. Now, if there are only 1 entry in the related table, then it slides the enclosing field fine, however, it still prints all the pages that "could" have been filled with data "if" there were 100 occurences. How do I avoid these blank pages being printed?

I made a simple Filemaker File to do my W2's for me. However, i need to know how to make only the top or bottom form print. I would think it would be a script saying something like "if Field "top" = "X" then print fields (all fields on top). Then the same for the bottom. Hope you can understand what im going for. My file prints out correspondence on a weekly basis. I have been having problems with the printer just not recognizing print requests that are generated by a series of scripts. I am using a PC on Windows XP Professional for this and, while watching the Print Monitor window, I see the request show for a half second then it disappears. Today I brought the file home to try and at least get the letters printed on my Mac. But, when I try to print letters for a series of records (with the "All" option selected), the printer prints the first record and then stops. Hi folks. Is it possible to make a bunch of reports print as pdf, add those pdfs into a container field (each on a separate record), and then sort and print those pdfs? I think I can see how to get to having multiple records, each holding the final pdf, but I can't see how to then script to sort those records and print the pdfs. It seems like once it's a pdf, I have to export the pdf to my computer and then print them from my computer, which is a bit of a drag... One idea I had was to have the script go through each record in the found set, export the pdf to a folder on the computer, then have it run an applescript that prints the pdf and then trashes it. I Have a filemaker database that prints very slowly on the Mac. I have tested it on windows XP FileMaker 9 and it is quite fast on the windows side. I'm trying to figure out why the difference? My database is designed to print one record at a time. This is because each record must be printed with a different layout in order to preserve the order of the printouts. When I run the printing script, I see all the jobs in the queue, the printer prints the first job, waits for about a second and prints the second job and so on. Anyone run into this issue??

This problem started with my db about a month ago. Whenever I go to the print, and move my mouse to change the print options, the pinwheel will spin for a couple of seconds, then Filemaker crashes. I've noticed that if I don't use the mouse and change the print options using the keyboard, it doesn't crash. This problem has occurred on both Intel iMacs and G5's, and has happened with databases that are shared on a server and those that are unshared and are only on my iMac. I've run Disk Utility, restarted the computer, even reinstalled Filemaker, and nothing has worked. Any assistance for this annoying problem would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Greg

In FM Pro 8.5, is there a way to programmaticly center a layout on the way to the printer? My layout items are centered (single page layouts) but when they come out of various printers, they are not always centered. Some printer drivers have the ability to center to page, but those that do not are causing the problem. This is a distributed application, so no way of knowing the user's printer ahead of time. A report while in browse mode (after being sorted properly) shows 4 records. When switching to preview mode only the 4th record displays and/or prints.

Can't figure this one out - and can't seem to get the forum search to work. Line spacing shows single on layout, browse, and preview. When I send to the printer - line spacing goes to double. If change layout spacing to .5 on paragraph control, it looks crammed on the screen, but prints correctly. Any ideas???

I have developed a database for my wife's window treatement business. I am experiencing a problem when printing. Here's the scenario: I have a table called Rooms and two related tables, Soft Items and Hard Items. I have attached a screen shot of the relationships. Basically Soft and Hard Items are both related back to Rooms via Room ID. I am unable to get more than one item from Soft Items or Hard Items to print on a report. Using FMP 8 on a Mac. When I run a report it looks good in preview mode in FMP but when it prints it only prints the first record and the header, nothing else. Hi, could someone offer some advice? I have a karaoke database consisting of two tables. One table for the CD titles and the other table for the track listings. They have a relationship so I can create a report based on the cd title with the relevant track listings. Then I will add a common header to the report and then print to file, each and every record to a separate file, taking it's name from the cd title field. I have been using a small Filemaker 6 database for years, its always worked fine. I had a hard drive failure on my G4 PowerBook I installed a new drive and restored everything from back up. The Filemaker database opened fine but when I come to print a single record it prints it blank. If I print all records it prints the first one in the set but leaves all the others blank. I then installed a copy of Filemaker 7 that I had sitting around thinking it might be something to do with not having a fresh install of Filemaker. This still has the same problem with my database. The printing issues can also be seen from using print preview. Does anyone have any ideas?

I put my records (3 fields) into a table layout. It is set to print in colums-down then across. In preview and printing the table grid lines only show up and print in the first column. The data is correct in the other 2 colums but there are no grid lines. Is it possible to make the table grid lines print in all 3 columns.

Hello Wanted: smart brain for (not only) my problem: need to print from fm9 to Epson pos printer e.g. tmh-88 in windows xp. I know how to handle the situation < fm6: the fonts are available as soon as one choose the printer in printer setup. But fm 7-9 might not support printer driver fonts, so they will NOT show up in layout mode to attach to fields. Latest driver supports font substitution. For some printers this works, even printing is slower. Font substitution does not work for tmh-5000II for example...(you cann configure it, but no supstitution) I desperately need a solution!!! Hi I am probably being an idiot but this is driving me mad. I have created a layout for a letter, on which there are fields from my database. The filemaker Print Setup and Print options are set to A4, yet when I preview or print only half the page prints on the A4 paper. On the screen is a dotted line which represents where the printing is stopping on the paper and my body size extends beyond this. Any advice as how to extend the print area so all the A4 paper is printed on would be appreciated.

I get some odd problems with my repeating fields in preview when I slide up and reduce the enclosing part. File attached. That is in preview. Looks fine in browse. One of my tables has a large text field in it which could contain anything from a few words to several pages of text. I'm trying to make a printer-friendly layout out of this. Is there a way to extend a text field over multiple pages so that all of the information can be printed?

I have a client that has switched to using Georgia.ttf as their main font. Problem is that the font handling in FileMaker is different from that of other applications. The character spacing is different. Is there anyway to correct this in FileMaker. It is a font that comes with Microsoft Office. This maybe one of those cute little Microsoft annoyances, "font only looks good in Microsoft apps", but as i am not a Typographer do not have a great knowledge of these things. Can i change the Character Spacing in FM (they are still using version 6, can't change that for now).

Hi there, I'm trying to figure out why Filemaker Pro 8.0 crashes a few times a day during prints. It seems to be coming from XDraw.dll. I read on a different post that someone recommended upgrading to 9.0, which we can certainly do, as we have a copy of it. However, I noticed 9.0 was frequently crashing as of a couple months ago and am weary to try it. Any pointers? (PS - This is when using XP Pro workstations connecting to a OSX Server hosting FMP8)

We've recently converted and redesigned our FM6 DBs into FM9, but when the files were first converted they were set (for whatever reason) to print 4 copies. Now, I can't open the DBs and print without it automatically setting the print options to 4 copies. I've adjusted most of my print scripts to reset that value, but the problem still arises whenever I just CTRL-P. Once I run a script that prints 1 copy, it remembers that value, tho. I've tried to reset this by opening the file from the server, which it seems to let me do (even tho I have no printers associated to the server), but when I exit and then re-enter (either from the server, or from remote), it's reset its…

I'm working on printing labels that are 2.2" wide by .25" tall. The catch is the labels are in sets of 3 on the roll coming out of my Zebra TLP printer. So there's 3 labels stacked for a total print area of 2.2" width x 3/4" tall, then an 1/8" space, then the next label, etc.. So for printing there is one record per 1/4" label or 3 records for the total print area of 3/4". From note pad for testing, I can have 10 lines to represent 10 records. All 10 lines are printed and the gap between labels is reconized properly. However in FM, only the first 3 records are printed. FM doesn't continue onto the next set of 3 records, etc.. Hi there. We have a Mac server hosting filemaker to both Macs and PCs. We had an office manager create an assortment of Filemaker databases, who has since left the company. The problem is that all of the databased were created on the Mac. When viewing them on PC, however, the font formatting is slightly different. Now, when we view the layout mode for the databases, they were setup using a font called "Times". I'm not sure if this is the problem? Maybe it's calling on a font that isn't on PC (XP Pro) and the PC is using a substitue font, causing formatting differences. I have a time and billing application where the invoice is made up of several reports (an invoice, time exhibit, cost exhibit, etc.). I would like to number the pages consecutively from one page to another even though the pages are not from the same layout but from the several layouts that make up the invoice.

I figured this was more of a printing issue than a format issue. What I was doing was removing buttons from being printed in my header. But this has left some white space. I was wondering if I could set it up so that when I go to print the header slides to reduce the white space. I last used FMP in 2004, want to start up again with FMP9A. I need to print records with multiple text fields, some containing up to 1000 characters. Even using the slide function, inevitably a text field will end up straddling a hard page break (HPB.) I fear that the entire contents of such a field will be relegated to either the leading or the trailing print page. What I'd like FMP9A to do is print in the same way a large paragraph is printed in an MS Word document: that is, to write as much of the paragraph/text field contents as possible down to the HPB, then resume writing the remainder of the paragraph/text field contents at the top of the next page. …

Hi All, I am using Filemaker 8.5 on Vista and it refuses to print any layout to a wired network shared printer (Lanier LP116c). The layouts all print perfectly when the printer is local and the laptop in question can print a test page - just nothing from Filemaker. I am a convert from Microsoft Access and Windows. I am now using Macintosh computers. I have not been able to duplicate a database I developed in Access with FileMaker Pro. My Access Database included a report that contained two sub-reports. The closest thing I found in Filemaker is the use of portals. The portals work good for entering information but not for printing as they do not "auto expand" as the number of records increase. Does anyone have any suggestions?

I am having issues printing when I mix text and data fields. I've had this with versions through 8.5. When I preview the page it looks fine but when I print, the data fields I have put in front of the text will often print 3 or 4 lines lower compared to the text beneath. I am trying to create a text form with entry fields. The text form may have a very specific space for the fill-in data and when it prints 3 or 4 text lines lower it creates a problem. I have to end up guessing where to put the data fields by raising them in browse mode printing the form to see where they fall and then adjusting again. The same thing occurs if I put a line over text. I may want it to fall …

In my application, there are two fields that can (and occasionally do) run longer than the column width on my report layout. Is there a way to have the row-height in the "body" section expand to accommodate a second line when necessary?

Hi -- I've just discovered that something seems to be wrong with my Print dialogue box. When I go to it in order to print record, the Preview button doesn't work -- it turns blue like it's *going* to work, but nothing happens. SImilarly, when I select the "Save as PDF" option form the PDF menu, it allows me to choose that option but nothing happens. If I hit "Print" it goes ahead and prints okay. Very peculiar. This problem is specific to Filemaker (Word, etc. works ok), but is not specific to any particular file or layout. I'm running FMP 8.5 advanced on my new iMac running Leopard 10.5.3. Any help? I have a starnge issue with one workstation running fmp9. It's directly connected to a lexmark 640 b/w printer. Almost everytime we do a print, it prints but also shuts down the fm application?? ANyone ever hear anything like this? Mike

Hello, I have reports to export as a pdf file. These reports have differents sections. Depending on the data in one field, I have to include or to exclude sections of the report. Is it possible to do that without having to create a different layout for each type of report needed, needing so to correct all these layouts any time a modification is needed? Is it understandable? FMP 6 OS10.54 I have just upgraded form 10.4 to 10.5. Since this upgrade, some of the fields in my databases do not print correctly (they sort of print a grey shading in stead of the text that is in it). After trying many a thing I discovered that if the are smaller tan 7 centimetres they print, if bigger not. Anybody have a clue how to fix this? Thanks

Hi How do I get filemaker to check if an invoice has been previously printed? I’d like to add a custom message to my printing script. When printing multipage invoices or purchase orders, I would like to have a running subtotal on the bottom of each page with a grand total on the last page. I suppose I could create a looping script and print each page separately, but there are times when I would like to have the document in a single PDF file. Any suggestions?

I have a report of several invoices wich restarts the page numbering after each invoice. So one invoice can have more then one pages (depends on the amount of invoice_items). I want the totals-data of an invoice always beeing displayed in the footer of the last page of the invoice. Therefor I wan't to hide (using conditional formatting) the totals-data when ## != invoice::total_pages. But I can't use the symbol ## in a calculation. Does anyone knows how to get the ## data in a calculation? Maybe there is custom function like get(Printed_Pagenumber)?

I have users with two separate Filemaker 9 applications. In both cases, when they attempt to print any report to a Sharp multifunction printer/copier, such as an AR-207 printer, Filemaker simply terminates abruptly. No warning or error messages. This has happened on 3 different Sharp devices. Sharp drivers have been updated on the PC's in use. There appear to be no articles on the www.Filemaker.com site.

I have recently purchased a 5-user pack of Filemaker 9 having used manual records for the last 25 years. When I print a record to our production Xerox Colour printer, sometimes it is fine and sometimes a 1-page record blows up to 2 pages with no black print on page 1 and the unwanted page 2 is blank. The coloured areas of the record (boxes and coloured text) print just fine but even a small company logo has the black missing from the image. I have a list of records and related records I want to print out. Think of the records as cover pages and the related records as content. They have to come out in the proper order, and using a particular printer preset. I thought that if I gave the user the print dialog for the first record to be printed, they could specify their settings and that those settings would remain for subsequent (no dialog) print commands. Unfortunately, it seems that with every new job filemaker has to be told what settings to use. With as many as 25-30 "covers" in a set, I don't want to ask my users to click Print 50 or 60 times. I want to be able to type as much info as I want in a comment field. I want the field to expand down the page [automatically] to fit the amount typed. I can ge the field to contract easily enough using sliding/printing but can't figure out how to get the field to expand.

Does anyone know if there is a plug-in or some way to print variable data on a static PDF like PrintShop Mail does? FileMaker prints all of the data on the page (both static and dynamic) for each record. I need to be able to have static images sent only once using Optimized PostScript. I'm guessing that I'm out of luck on this one as I've searched exhaustively. I'm really surprised that many other people don't wish for the same feature in FileMaker.

This must be due to something simple, but my brain is taxed and I can’t figure this out right now. Problem: One layout will not display in preview mode -- all others display normally and I’m not sure what I did to this one. I also noticed that when I am on the layout in browse mode and go to File>Save/Send Record as… PDF is grayed out. Excel shows normally but PDF is grayed out. I hope you can help. TIA

Hello, I am researching an issue for a client that is running Filemaker Pro versions 6.0v4 and 8.5v1. Their Macs are using OS 10.4.11 and the "Data Entry" iMac is running 10.5.1. The main issue we are having is this. The customer prints and duplex's files from Filemaker Pro to HP Laser printers. The documents duplex and print fine. Next they will print the same document from Filemaker to a Konica Minolta C6500 (fiery) duplexed. This also prints correctly. Now if the customer goes back and tries to print the same job again to the HP the document no longer prints duplexed on the HP's only single sided. Hello, We have a mixed pc/mac environment and have noticed that when printing a report, it takes significantly longer to print a report from a PC than it does the mac. This is something that's repeatable and it doesn't matter what report it is. Has anybody else run across this? Thanks, John

Ok, I'm not super Filemaker savvy so forgive me if this is a dumb question. If I search for a record in Filemaker and it pulls up 7 records, and I need record 6 of 7 and I attempt to save that record as a .pdf (File > Save/Send Records As > pdf) it converts record 1 instead of record 6. Is there anything we can do to fix this? It does it on all workstations. Thanks!

Hello, everyone. I have an invoice table which is working very well. I have buttons placed on it that are designed for printing, so that when the user clicks on it in Browse mode, it brings them to preview mode, prints it, then returns them to browse mode. I also have another button that simply allows them to preview it (by bringing them to preview mode). My question is this. Is there any way that I can add some user interaction to preview mode so that it calls my print script from there (i.e. The user previews it, accepts it, and prints it, or rejects it and goes back to browse mode). I'd like it if the user weren't to use the buttons on the actual toolbar on …
