Today I downloaded 8v3 (Mac OS X 10.4.6, Power Book G4, 80G, no network or external disks mounted) and ran per instructions. It hangs, telling me it is "searching." I gave it over an hour while I mowed the lawn. Forced quit and tried again, same result. So, I deleted FMPA8v2, reinstalled from CD, redownloaded 8v2 updater, and it hangs too!. In January (or so) it worked fine. So now what? Any ideas?

Currently the company I work for uses FileMaker 4.1 (egads!) on 3 PC computers with the data stored on a networked server. The company was just sold and the new owner uses a Macintosh. He will need access to the database as well. I have a couple questions. First, my suggestion to him would be to upgrade all the software, but is it even possible to upgrade from 4.1 to current and have all the data work well? Also, with his Mac, will he need to run a PC version off of the his Mac, or will a Macintosh version of Filemaker play nice with the PC's in the shop? Thanks so much for any suggestions! Linda

I work in allied health and sometime ago, half-convinced my boss that his excel spreadsheet to collect data was getting out of hand and clunky and Filemaker would be the solution for him. I am only a beginner FM end-user but have been impressed by the capabililities of FM (due to an ex-husband). So he told me to do something abt it, I met up with a local developer who did only an on-job with my requirements, and 2.5K later, we have a product that is incomplete and buggy. My boss needs more convincing that it is going to be worthwhile monetary investment and I need to keep my job. One big point that I overlooked to ask the developer was "Is it possible to open, access and …

We have a very large complicated database that was developed for us awhile back, it took years to fine tune but we are happy with it now. We have a network of iMac's running OS 9.2 and database access is very slow. The fewer people using it the faster it is but it's still slow. We need to fix it. What are the possibilities of getting something more modern like Filemaker 7 or 8 and running it on OS X? Will our database work with it and how do we find out? The computers in use on our network range from 5-10 at a time accessing the database all day long. I understand that OS9 may have some networking issues that make it slow? Thanks!

Hi everybody, Does anyone know if there is a version of FileMaker that I can upgrade to that will bypass the limitation that lets you only view 5 records at a time when you are viewing them thru a web browser from a locally web published FileMaker Pro 7 database? That 5 record limitation is killing all my web publishing plans. I'm about to put in a recommendation for some FileMaker Pro upgrades and if either Advanced or Server can do this, then I'll get one of those added on. I tried getting an answer from FileMaker, but they replied and asked me to call their technical support. I just don't have the time or the patience today to sit and listen to musak for 20 …

I have an old Aircraft Pilot Log program written for FM5.5. It is a "run only" type of file that does not allow me to make any changes in layouts, custom reports, etc. All those options are grayed out in the FM interface. Unfortunately, it is no longer supported. I want to upgrade to a better log book program, but I really don't want to re-enter several thousand flights worth of data! However the EXPORT function is one of the features that is grayed out and unavailable. Is there any way I can "unlock" the files so I can gain access to the export feature?

I'm having an issue with Filemaker 8 and global storage on a date field. I am using a repeating global date field to accept two inputs from a custom dialog. I then use those two values to populate a date field with a range of dates in a find request. The problem is the second repetition is no longer accepting the input. This was working in FMP 7. Any suggestions?

I'm changing the question alittle... My company is running Filemaker 5 Server and Pro. We have talked about upgrading to version 8 on both server and pro. We were hoping to do an Upgrade, however we see that Filemaker only discusses upgrades version 5.5. Any one know why? Why was 5.5 such a big change from 5? Lets assume that we do not upgrade to 5.5 before upgrading to version 8. Has anyone had any problem with this upgrade? Thanks.

In the older version of FMP, I had individual files that I opened andclose with scripts as needed. In FMP8 the opening process appears very slow when clicking on a record in a portal and opening that record. Can I restructure the file and data to be a table within the new FMP8 file? Or, how do I get quicker access to records in another file?

I upgraded to filemaker pro version 2 and later version 3. After upgrading to v2, one of my relational calculations changed from a zero to "?". The relationship is back to the current table using a secondary key. When a record is found it displays its value properly. If not found, I get the "?". This makes all my other calculations that use this value, invalid. I tried using an "IsEmpty" and "IsValid" in the calculation. The results were the same. I reinstalled 8.0v1 and everything is fine again. Any suggestions?

Our homegrown v6 application has a dozen files, most with several thousand records, and the larger files are 200Mb+. It extensively uses the "tunneling" method to pass data between the current records of multiple open files by running external scripts, setting globals and then using look-ups. I believe this was the standard (only?) method to pass data between (artificially) related files in v6. I realise that the v7/8 relationship model totally supersedes this old kludgy way of getting data between files/tables, and that re-architecting the whole application is the ideal. However that is a monumental piece of work for us. Will the v6 "tunneling" method still w…

Hey guys, We have 32 files all in Filemaker 5.5 being hosted on a server by Filemaker server 5.5. All clients are using 5.5 - 6.0. We are considering upgrading to Filemaker 8. I have converted some files over using a trial version and don't seem to see any problems. Other than the password issue which threw me for a loop at first. I do like some of the new features I see but am not quite sure it is worth us upgrading to version 8. I'm kinda concerned about the "Fixing what isn't broke" aspect. What we are using now works fine and has for 3 years. Since a lot of you already have migrated over I wanted to ask your opinions. What are the main benefits we w…

Hi guys. My company have been using FM 1.0 since 1992 (now on an iMac G3/OS 8.6)and we have never needed to upgrade. We have now bought a G4 imac with FM 8.0, and have just found out that things have moved on and the files are no longer compatible. This is a major headache, as we use FM not only for database duties, but also for reports, test certificates, diagrams, invoices, in fact everything a small business needs to output. We have developed hundreds of layouts over the years and cannot afford to lose them. As we need to move on, can anyone suggest how we can move forward from here? Is it possible to run this v1.0 in Classic, or would this be a stop-gap solution?…

I have just been trying to migrate my own 30 file solution from FM6 to 8Adv. While it has been tedious fixing up the file references, there are some broken scripts which are more tedious to deal with, and I'm not sure why they broke. I have a global nav script which is the same in every file and it seems to be the main culprit, but breaking in different places in different files. It also seems strange that in a short script of the form "If the named database is open, do this script but if not do this other script" both scripts are in the same file but one may be identified where the other line has been replaced by something like "file missing" and/or "script miss…

I have a client who's website was being run by FileMaker 6. It is currently disabled due to the size of one of the files, which keeps crashing the ISP's server. The file needs all of the data it contains, but will not grow much more over time. I created a subset of the offending file and am running it on my server to eliminate any other problems. Therefore, we decided to upgrade as a solution. I have one problem: my test server is too old to upgrade and we'll need to test for stability before the ISP will allow us to put the website back online. Is there anyone out there willing to let us test our website on their server for a few hours?

I’ve had the luxury of starting with FM7 and therefore have done everything in one file and not really known any different. Now I’m upgrading some existing FM6 solutions that are anywhere from 10 to 30 separate files. I’m wondering if there is any logic to keeping some of the files separate, so that I can begin to build a master template for each key area, which should be able to be added or removed 'easily' , depending on future needs and re-purposing for new clients. The other idea I had was to keep everything in one file, and simple not reference Table Occurrence that are not required for new clients. The final idea was to move to a separation mode…

Hi all, I'm just trying my hand at converting a FM6 solution into FM8 on a Mac (Tiger) and I'm discovering the file reference issues. Hi there! I have some very old tables done in FileMaker long ago -- somewhere between 1986 and 1990. Unfortunately, I no longer even possess a Macintosh and am trying to recover the data contained in these files. In FM Pro 8, it looks like all files are created/converted with the option "Indicate questionable words with special underline" set to ON. Is there any way to set this to OFF for all future file creations/conversions (and not have to create my own special template, etc.)? I couldn't find any way to do it from the standard documentation... (By the way, FMI: 1) they're NOT questionable words, they're French words!!! 2) Why don't you just fire the turkey who dreamed this up before he does more damage???) Thanks!

Hello- I am working on a solution to redesign a FM 5 system to an upgraded FM 8 system. It is in a corporate environment. I am unclear on the best approaches to setting up a Dev, Test, Training environment. Since FM is kind of an all-in-one package, how are multiple developers handled? How can solutions be migrated from Dev to test. Can different environments be set up on the same server? Basically, any help or guidance is appreciated! Thanks

I have a hundred runtime users I have to update from FM6 to FM8 version. Can't import their client data directly. Only XML seems to work as an intermediary format. The problem is that on some folks data I get an parsing (whatever that is) error messsage regarding inappropriate character 0x4. Detective work learnt me that 0x4 is Ascii for Control-D which in the XML world apparently means EOT (end of transmission) and thus dies on attempted import... How do I avoid getting that in my Exported File or how do I extract it from the xml file? HELP?!?

I've got a solution that I developed years ago in 5.5, and am trying to change it over to 8. I'm not sure of exactly how to proceed. Hi, I am using FM5 and I would like to upgrade to v8. I have downloaded the trial version from the internet... to try it. All I've done was to open the fp5 file from the v8 trial version, a fp7 file was created and it worked perfectly (although I had to get rid of the passwords first). I could use version 8 without any apparent big problem. I am convinced v8 is for us, so I wish to purchase a 5 pack version. Filemaker.com says that the update works from version 6 and 7 only, so I'm not sure what to do. Shall I buy an upgrade package or a full version??? Has anyone used an upgrade to go from v5 to v8??? Many thanks!

In FM 6 to reduce file size when I use graphics to decorate a layout I insert a picture but tick the "store only a reference to the file". As long as I leave the graphics e.g. image.jpg in the FileMaker folder they show up. Now I have upgraded to FM 8 where the graphics showed on the layouts is an empty box which states "file cannot be found:image.jpg" Is there a place where I can put these "store only a reference to the file" graphics in my OSX where they will again all show up in the layouts or do I have to insert them and reference them all again.

I have a database that has been migrated from 3 to 6 to 8 and I am running into a strange issue with this individual database I have not encountered with the other forty odd databases I have converted. Originally, this database did not have a real account associated with it, when one wished to modify it, they would enter the password, otherwise they viewed it as a read-only guest. When it is shared over the network from FileMaker 8 Server, one can still view the database, and one can still login using just the password (leaving the username blank) however the database can not be modified in this state. I'm looking at a file that was converted from FMP 5.5 to FM8. A typical date, as entered, might read "07/12/1962" - that is shown formatted as entered. The same field with date formatted as "Jul-12" style will not display that date, instead it returns the "?" If I remove the leading "0" the date format resolves to "Jul-12". It certainly doesn't seem to violate the M/D or D/M laws. I can also re-enter the date or copy/paste, exactly as is, and the date now formats correctly. There are 12K of them to do - it there a better way? Is this "known" - eg. that a date can be a date yet not be a date. The field takes great exception if I enter 13/12/2005 when the expected f…

I orderd FM8 upgrade since we had FM6. So now I have software installed on 8 computers and I find out that you can only have 5 concurrent users. Well, I design using FM Advanced 8.02. Some of our stations are 7.0v3 and some are 8.0v2. And we are using FM Server 7.0v4. I know they all work together. My problem is when designing. I would imagine many have had older solutions that they wanted to consolidate under the new table system in one file. I have foole around with doing this a bit and have found that if I simply import the file as a table, I lose any links to that file (IE: Any lists that were based on fields in that file for instance). Hi, I jumped from FMP5 to FMP 7, and I actually spent a few years without using the program, so I guess that I have lost somethings along the way. I have a file done in FMP5 that opens with a user password directly, without asking for opening password. I rememeber that i use to open it with the administrator passwork Option-clicking it, so that the log-in menu appears. It doesn't seem to work anymore in FMP7. How do I make this file display the login menu so I can enter the administration password?

Does anyone have a basic custom web publishing solution they could attached so I could get an idea of what all the files need to look like? I am very lost!! Thank you

Has anybody migrated from PrintSmith to FileMaker? I am wondering if FileMaker has all the estimating features and user-friendliness that PrintSmith does. Also interested in tracking & job ticket abilities. Thanks, Rachel

Quite a jump coming.... I have 23 fully related databases I need to upgrade in the next couple of months (I'm waiting for the FMP8 bible to come out). I just downloaded the FMP8 migration download from filemaker.com.. "Converting FileMaker Databases from Previous Versions". It seems to reference filemaker 7 a lot when I was expecting FMP 8... this is just recycled text that wasn't cleaned up later for FMP 8, right? it makes me nervous though that not all the issues will be accurate. ... and this is business critical info... so I want to be extra careful. Is it correct for FMP8? If there is a better source for conversion info as well.. please…

we have been on 5/5.5/6 forever, and are introducing 8 to the scene. coupla questions: - can we run FMS5.5 on the same LAN as FMS8 ? - can we run FMD6 on the same Mac OSX tiger box as FMA8 ? - can we run FMD6 & FMA8 from the same box at the same time ? - can we run them with open served files from 6 & 8, respectively? - how is any of this behavior different for WinXP or Win2k? thanks. i searched and searched and could not find this info on filemaker.com (imagine that!)

At work, we have FM Pro 7 running on Windows XP. I bought a copy online to use at home on my macmini running Tiger. Can I take the .fp7 file from work to home, work on it, and then bring it back to work the next day without issues? Are there any "gotchas" to look out for? Thanks.

I am upgrading from v4.0 to v8.0 and am trying to combine tables into one file. I follow the instructions in the help file: ------------------ To import table schema without data: 1. Spent a considerable amount of time renaming all layouts and scripts on a relational FP6 multi-file solution (per white paper suggestion) in preparation for conversion and then converted the files using FMP8 Advanced. My goal is to combine several of the files into the main file as additional tables. When I import a file as a table all of the fields import fine and the conversion process creates a generic new layout titled the same as the file's name that was imported. I then have no problem importing the scripts from the same file. The problem is that the importing process does not import the layouts from the subject file and any scripts that reference these layouts a…

Have a old filemaker 5 file that converted fine to 8. The question I have is the old file was setup wrong and I am correcting it in the new file but using the import data from file does not update in the new repeating field correct. So I must be incorrect in the way I am trying to fix it. The old file had 6 sets of exact fields Qty. 1,2,3,4,5,6 and description 1,2,3,4,5,6. The new file has just 1 of each field, formatted as a repeating field. Importing the file the first time works fine but when I try to import again using the next field #2 and putting it in the new file field as a update it overwrites it and does not add it in the repeating field, the old file and the ne…

What I want do is to have one single file with all my scripts, layouts, fields and so on. I know I am going to have to do some cleaning up. I just don't want to do all of that copying and importing stuff. PS, I don't have developer. I want to convert from FM5 to FM7. Thanks for you feedback

Upgraded a 20 file relational db to Fp8. After months of reprogramming and resetting of file references a constant problem emerges. Whenever I use the 'Window' pull down menu to select a file named 'Spline' it displays another file (the crime file). When I once again select the spline file (this time while in the crime file that it displayed) using the window pull down menu it displays the ptstop file. I have redone the file references with the same results. Note: script calls to this file (the Spline) work fine and all files are in the same local directory. What could be causing this?

I need to upgrade to the latest filemaker and after purchaseing filemaker 8 advanced i opened the filemaker 4 files and followed the prompts to update to filemaker 8. After doing the automatic conversion the following errors are occuring. 1. I did a trial conversion of my solution to FileMaker 8.0 and I'm having an issue that maybe somebody can shed some light on. My solution consist of FileMaker Server hosting a bunch of files and each user has a local file for opening the database and logging in. This local file is referred back to many times in every hosted file. The hosted files reference the local file with an absolute path which happens to be my hard drive and my directories. In FileMaker 6 the hosted files always find each users local file although the reference is pointing to my specific machine. In FileMaker 7/8 the local file cannot be found unless I reference each users specific directory. I've tri…

Hi, I'm working from a mac and am migrating my v6 app to v7. All the "re-write" was prepped and going to plan, with exception to one... I have multiple files from which I need to create a report. Right now I go to the preview mode, make a copy, go to a different fm file, past the screendump in a container field and do this on serveral other pages. The common FM file now contains all the required "screens" to make up the report, after which page numbers are added etc. When I print this report in v6 the text is as it should be, but in v7 it appears the screendump was in a very low resolution resulting in unreadable texts and such. Does anyone know of a…

Prior to migration ... I thought it might be a good idea to relocate all my fmp6 files for one particular solution, into one directory ( I wanted to do this anyway - and now is a good time) ... but I'm having this problem... Using FMP6... I'm trying to modify an existing solution... - previously, the menu file resided outside of the folder with all the solution files in it... All of the file reference links were working fine with that basic set up... - now I am trying to take the menu file - and place it inside the main folder with all the other files... So I quit FileMaker ... Moved the menu file ... And booted up with the menu file in the new locati…

I have a multi file solution originally built in FM6. When opening the solution there is a script that opens all the neccissary tables at the begining, when the user first logs in. This was done for a number of reasons. One of which is to make sure you didn't see that annoying 'Opening xxx.fp5 as a guest of server' message. Now I am converting into 8 and I notice that there is no longer a message when opening files. My solution still has multiple files, partly for busness reasons, partly because there is no need right now to consolidate everything. So my question is, is there any utility for preserving this opening sequence anymore? I can get the dat…

Well, I bought a VLA from filemaker about a year ago and finally decided to take a look at the migration from FM 5 to FM 7. I would like to combine tables into one DB but I do not want to type in all the fields and scripts. Has anybody made a third party solution for that yet that can be used without developer? I really would love to have the functionality of 7 without redoing all of our databases.

I just attempted to jump into converting an 18 file solution to Filemaker 8. All the files converted and saved, however the linking of the passwords has been messed up. In FM6, you would open the main file with the master password and the script would open the remaining files with the master password. with the new files (and I did a batch convert), the account name / password seems to give major problems. I open the main file leaving account name blank and entering the Master password. The script then opens the remaining files, but most of them open with guest privleges so I cannot edit or access them at all. Any thoughts?

First of all let me say I have never used Filemaker but am experienced in many other database platforms. I was called in to help a client recover data lost during an upgrade. The data was in a .CTS file. When the upgrade was performed all data was lost so the client manually re-entered data for the past few months. I was able to recover a version of the data from a backup. We now have data (2001 -> May 2005) in one .CTS file and (March 2005 -> present) in another CTS file (of the same name, eg transact.cts) I do not have access to a Filemaker IDE and the application has the import menu option greyed out. is there any way to merge these two files …

I'm a newbie, so please be gentle! I'm not sure this is the correct place to post this but it seemed appropriate. I'd appreciate opinions from the wise. I'm not a computer wiz but I managed to write a database for my business (property) in FMPro4 about 7 years ago. It has evolved over the years into about 20 related files and is vital to the running of my business. It does not (yet) tackle accounts for which I currently use an off the shelf package and I'm now considering trying to write an accounting database. I'm very familiar with accounting practice but have never tried to do anything about it in FMPro. Has anyone done this and if so, is it a mammoth ta…

Hey there, I have a database that is not relational which I would like to be relational. I have started to create a new database that is relational (this might have been the bad move). I've transferred the main records over and that is fine. I have a bunch of layouts in the old one that contain fields I still need to transfer. I understand that you cannot transfer a layout, but is it possible to transfer fields? Will I just have to re-create all of the fields in my new database? Is there a faster solution to this problem?

this is all being done in fm 8 advanced, despite what the profile says. i have a file with a conditional value list. it is working fine, however, i have set the layout to auto save and still when i exit the field that the condition is based on which is the client field, the matter field will not show the correct matters until i click out of all the fields, sometimes it takes several clicks outside the field. the way the condition works is this: there is a calculation field that automatically names a record based on the type of client entered. if it equals that in a matter database, then those corresponding matters show up in a matter field on the main table. thi…

I'm migrating from one mac to another, each running FMP Dev 7 and everything seems to be working fine except in Preview mode. On one computer fonts displayed in Preview mode are wonderfully crisp. On the new computer the fonts in Preview mode are horribly pixelated and blurry. I've verified that this is the case with multiple databases, including just choosing "New" and "Timecards" from the templates and immediately previewing that. The fonts seem to be installed correctly, as no other application seems to be having font issues. As I mentioned, it's not just a single DB or typeface, it seems to be a FMP thing. Is there a display preference that I'm not seeing? …

I am trying to assist someone who recently upgraded their database from FM4.3 to FM7v3 with server 7. Their server uses Windows 2003. Since the conversion, they have numerous issues. 1) Reports that contain both a portal field and regular fields that were set to slide up and reduce space both preview and print incorrectly. Partway through each page, the fields overlap and are unreadable. They called FM support and the answer given was "portals never were made to be printable". Really??? 2)Screens come up slow and pop-out lists appear much slower than in V4.3. There is sometimes a delay of up to 15 seconds waiting for a value list to appear. 3) Scripts …

Hello, I am a developing a runtime database with several fields with drop down value lists. The user will need be able to define and alter those value lists (data includes “Customer type” and “dep. to which account.”) In FM 6, it was easy enough to put the fields in a separate file where all the values could be stored, separated by carraige returns, in a single record, and have the main file refer to the fields to determine the value lists. In FM 8 Advanced, I do not see how to do this and have been unbable to come up with any alternatives. Also, After I link the table that holds the source fields for the value lists to the destination table (relations…

Can someone please help me out?? I have fairly small networked multiple file FileMaker 6 solution. All the files originally had the same password, and when I opened my menu file, all the other files opened without a problem. I've since converted the system to FileMaker Pro 7, and now when I open my menu file, some files open automatically and other files bring up the login dialog. When I type in the password, it doesn't work. Do you know why this is happening? Super Thanks!

Hi Guys, I've almost finished migrating one of my FMP 5 solutions to an FMP 8 format. I've even imported a couple of tables togther to see how the import table feature works, and now I have a solution with 18 files instead of 22. One of the things I've noticed with regards to External FP7 Files, it takes a while, almost 2-3 minutes to open up the related files. Comparing this to FMP 5 which opens the original set of files in 30 seconds. FMP8 seems to open up the files quicker if I'm a guest(i.e. network) environment than standalone...but then again it could be the way I've configured the files. Probably go ro FMP Knowledgebase and see if there are any articles o…
