I do not even know if there is way to script up code that will go out to yahoo and download into to a temp file, daily stock historical data. Can anyone help? Robert

I have a field "dotfield" that changes from a white dot (invisible on the layout) to a black dot when the record is selected. I use this field as a graphical way to show which record is selected - then a user can pick a serious of buttons for what they want to do with that record. I implemented this awhile ago and it is not the most elegant solution. However I think it is important for me to understand why it doesn't work, even though I will probably scratch this functionality in the future. Hi there! I'm trying to make a 'send mail'-button, with a confirmation, to make me remember wich date i send the email. I have a small database that is already operational showing Customers and Products, I've been trying for the last couple of days to get invoicing working, with no luck. I'm trying to get the product name (Description) to show up from the Products Database when I input the product code (relations already created). I am trying to pull percentages from a subsummary layout and can't seem to get it to work. Well, not exactly. I can get the percentage of the first subsummary breakdown, but it won't figure the percentages for the other 9 breakdowns in the subsummary layout. Does anyone have a formula for figuring percentages from a subsummary layout? Example: 11 people replied 0 to 10% , 5 people replied 11 to 20%, 6 people replied 21 to 30%, etc. Total responses to question one was 87. I can get breakdown to question one, but am unable to get the percent breakdown of 11 divided by the 87 that responded, or the 5 out of 87 that responded, etc. What am I not doing that I should be doing? …

I am tryng to manage advertising for a small publication using FM7 on OS X Tiger. The Dbase is working fine - but we want to generate our proof forms using the dbase. The approach we've tried is to create a layout with a large container field - we then place an image of the ad in the field - generate a pdf and email that file to the client. The problem is that the images, once placed, seem to present as preview images. We have tried paste as well as insert picture, neither helps. With insert picture we have tried with and without "store only a reference..." The images we are trying to import are pdfs or other formats of ads exported from InDesign. These fil…

Hello All I've searched but not found an answer so apologies if this is old territory! I need to parse email addresses in FMP7 giving me just the domain, i.e. = thisdomain.co.uk I thought I found the answer using a substitue command to replace the @ symbol with a space within a rightwords function. This is fine until you get a domain with a hyphen in the middle "-", where you only get the second half of the domain. Is there a better way?? Thanks Matt

Hello, I've spent some time trying to get this to work, but have not had much success. I'm looking for a way to a field equal to the week of the month. For instance week 1, week 2, week 3, week 4, week 5, and another one to display the date of the first day of that week. For this purpose the week starts on Monday. I am a complete novice, so please don't be too cruel. In Filemaker Pro 8, running on WinXP, I want to use a container field to store a picture. I would like to display the related record, enter a name, and other identifying data, then with the container field displayed, acquire a picture from a scanner or a digital camera and store it in the container field. I've recently experienced some pretty bizarre behavior from two different databases, and I'm beginning to get alarmed. (I've NEVER seen anything like this before.) One database had a text field, with some entries set to "Yes" or "No" -- however, when I searched for the records set to "Yes," FM said that no records were found (I tried the search a number of different ways). I fiddled with the field, turning the indexing on and off, and eventually it began to work (I don't know exactly what enabled it to work again). Hi all, This just came up in another thread, but as it appears to be an undocumented feature, it probably deserves its own. Apparently, GetSummary(sFieldX; OtherTO::FieldY) does not yield a result. It seems the GetSummary function will not accept related fields as a breakfield. Any thoughts on why this behaves differently than regular summary fields, which can be broken by related fields in subsummary parts? -Raz

As Subject: How to do it? The unique number generate by current date. For example, I like to have an index number field called POR# (Purchase Order Request number). The number has the 7 digit format: ymmdd## eg. Today is 2006/4/18, the first POR# will be 6041801. I have a layout in my database that records deposits. On the top part I enter the total deposit amount. On the bottom thru a portal I record that deposit broken down into line item posting. I have a total field to sum the line items in the portal. What I would like to do is compare the deposit total to the line item total and if they don't match have an error statement appear. Is this possible to do? If so, where would the "script" go, in the total field or just a general script? If a general script what would trigger it. I don't want to leave the screen and move on it my totals do not match. Is there another way that would be better?

I have a database of scientific papers in which one field is the url of the PDF of the paper. I have published the database using Instant Web Publishing on FM Server 7. I want the urls in the field described above to be live links, so database users can click on them to load the PDF file. Is there a way to do this? I have a one-many relationship for my database. I want to be able to show the total number of child records for each parent record. Is there a simple calculation for that? All I can think of is to write a script to perform a search for each parent and then get the record count. I am sure there is easier and faster way. Of course the actual case is more complicated than this. I need to show, for each parent, total number of child records seperated into different state. Something like, 4 from TX, 12 from WA, 20 from FL (total of 4 subset). I figure I can achieve this by adding more conditions to my relationship. Thank you in advance for your help.

I'm having problems with a calculated container field that holds our employee images. In particular the problem occurs when hosted on our server. We've been developing the file offline in single user mode. Now that we've taken the file and put it on the server (7_3) none of the paths/images work. I have a database that uses a relationship to track changes to daily prices of stocks. Is there any way to perform calculations on what I am seeing in the portal or through the realtionship? I have the realtionship set up as well as the portal but cant wrap my mind arround how to calculate the percent change from one day to the next. I have a job tracking system. Each job passes through a production department. The CSR tracks each phase. I have a pull down menu that indiactes where the job is in production; Stage 1, Stage 2, Stage 3 etc. I would like to be able to look back and see when the job moved from 1 stage to the next. Is it possible to have a time field for each stage that get s stamp when the drop down is changed through the stages? I would want to view this in a different layout.

I'm not a programmer and not sure if this is the right place to ask, but I have put together a small order entry database that I'd like to streamline. As it is now, I select a product from a list in one field then tab to the next field and enter the products' cost. It appears the goto related record function does not work properly in advanced 8.02. The functions work fine in version 5.5. any ideas on this one. I have tried multiple script changes on a simple pair of test files and no luck.

My field formatting question is, is it possible to format the layout so that when I duplicate a record and tab through each field, finding one I want to change, have the text automatically highlight? I am trying to get one layout (based on one table) to lookup a name from another layout (based on a different table) based on an ID that I enter. I have the field for the name set to lookup from the right table... but when I enter the ID nothing happens... I'm not sure if I need to make the lookup a portal or what. I'm trying to create a calculation (logical function) using the case function. What i want to do is create a calculation that gets information from two fields then turns that information into another field. So what i want is Case (Field 1 = "A" and Field 2 = "B" ; 3) What i don't understand how to do is create the AND part of the equation so that i can incorperate more than one field into the logical function. Is there a relationship between the dimensions of the stored image and the dimensions of the displayed field with the image. This is on OS X 10.4.6 in FM8A. I was wondering if it was possible to have a date field functioning that when data is entered a calendar pops up to have the date entered. By default the calendar would open with the current date displayed and then the correct year, month, day could be toggled to by arrows. This would faciltate a more point and click type of date entry. I would like to always convert the times to lowest denominator or seconds. It seems easy to me until i have something that takes place for example like 5 years, 34 days, 13 hours, 41, minutes and 12 seconds. I don't know how to write the script. I am having some weird results. I have a calculation that is if(ReadingDate<10/31/2005,"Y","N") when I enter a date that is less than 10/31/2005 it returns "N" everytime. The weird thing is that if I use greater than, it resolves correctly. Any ideas?

Hi all ) I'm designing a GUI to have a dark grey background with the fields in very light grey. I want the text to be white. It looks fantastic, but when you tab through the fields to type in data, you can't read the very light grey text against the field because--although the field is invisible when you escape out of it, it's stark white when you're in it. I realize that same-named fields (e.g., "NameFirst") in different (related) tables have their own context. Does giving them different names, like "NameFirstEmployee" and "NameFirstVendorContact" have much value to developers (an extra, but not necessary identifier as to which field/table is being referred to)? I want to drag an image from one container in a layout to another in the same layout (i.e. "move" the image) but so far all I can seem to do is copy it by dragging (i.e. it stays in the original container but is reproduced in the target as well). Can anyone shed some light on the difference in performance between a summary field and a sum calc field? The databases I generally work with do not have that many records and I have not seen a great performance difference. Will either work faster or slower when the record number increases? I am using FM7 and and am new to it. I created a very simple database and am entering upc codes in a numbers field. After I enter the UPC code, the numbers automatically change and all the upc fields end with the string "e+09" If I click on the field, the numbers will display as I inputted them, but will change back as soon as I click away. Is this some sort of indexing thing? I just want to be able to recheck my numbers without having to click on each field. Thanks Randy

I need to calculate a number. The calc is from 2 fields The first is a coded number of 3000/1500. The 2nd is 5. So the calc for this example would be 4(3000)+1(1500) for a total of 13,500. How do I get Filemaker to recognize the 2 different numbers? Can I tell it to see one on the left of the slash and then see the one on the right?

I have historical data on our schools races, for each day of competition in a race there are: Student name date lowest time highest time start run time end run time number of runs I dont know how to relate this data for multiple days for each student? Hi, I have a pretty simple business report that shows Revenue, Cost of Goods, Gross Profit (Calculation: Revenue - Cost of Goods), and Profit Percent (Calculation: Gross Profit / Revenue). The report is summarized by Customer, and I have Summary fields that total the first three fields and takes an average of the Profit Percet. The problem is, I don't really want an average profit percent -- I want the GrossProfitSUM / RevenueSUM. But when I write that calculation, it doesn't seem to work. I've had this problem before... what's the best way to handle this? Thanks! Andrew

Hi there--- I have a database with multi tables (tables re: question are people > jobs > dept). On a layout, I would like the user to enter the Dept Code (abbreviated code for dept name- ie BHS is Behavioral Science) and then the department full name would automatically appear as a display field. I have the field setup and behaving correctly- except the user actually needs to tab into the display field for it to update. If the user doesn’t tab into the dept name (display only) field, it won’t update the display. How can I eliminate the tab necessity? I want it to appear automatically. Thanks

Each record in the Professors database contains a portal listing all the students that are associated with that professor, as well as those students' contact info. I want to be able to assign a value to each check box and then calculate the sum total. For instance, there are a series of check boxes for the question "Have you ever had any of the following?" Coughed Up Blood (assigned value of 20) Chest Pain (assigned value of 10) Tuberculosis (assigned value of 20) So that if a patient checked the Chest Pain and Tuberculosis boxes it would calculate 30 as the answer. I have a parent and child database - 2 separate databases because it's a conversion from fm6. In the parent database I have a screen with parent info and a portal where children can be entered, like name, grade, age, etc. One of the things I need to do is charge tuition. I have a purchase order database that tracks vendors, purchasing information, and lineitem information. there are two main tables, Purchase Orders and Line Items. The purchase order table has a portal referencing the Line item database by the purchase order number. When the user goes in and adds a lineitem it creates a new record automatically filling in the purchase order field in the line item table. This is where my problem starts. I have the vendor field in the line item table set as a look up. This look up is set to run when the purchase order field is changed. My problem is that it doesn't do that. Does anybody know if it is possible to zoom only the contents of a container field (in this case a .jpeg) instead of the whole page. I have tried in script maker to do this through the set field and then zoom in, but i still get the whole record zooming. I really dont want to have to go to another view with the image zoomed as I have at the moment, simply due to the number of records being held it will take to long to go between the main form and the new window. Hi I need help with what I think is very simple but haven't used FMP for so long I forget how to do it. I have create 1 database with 3 tables. 1 table for customer details, one for products and one for sales. I have linked the sales and customer tables together via a unique customer number and the product and sales tables with a product ID. In the sales table there is a field with a status of values or either A B C D or E for each. On the product database, I want to show for each product how many of the product have value A. Hi, I need help generating a calculation. I am creating a scheduling database and in an effort to save time and eliminate error i would like the user to input the amount of hours projected to work and the start time. From those two fields i would like to generate the end time automatically. Can someone please help me out. i'm using field names: start time, hours, and end time.

2 questions: I rent a condo and am making a database for it. I've been using Appleworks and thought I'd upgrade. I am beginning to use graphics as buttons rather than native FM buttons. I know that I can keep the size of the file down by storing the path to the graphic but can anyone advise me if there are any performance issues that might outweigh the saving in file size? Should I be even bothering to store a path or should I just store the graphic each time? For primary key values, using auto-entered (and incremented) serial numbers, where the numbers utilize an alpha prefix, I'm wondering what the pros and cons are of using the form of: "abc_1" vs. "abc_000001" are. One thing I like about the latter is that the numbers are of fixed length. Just a visual preference really on my part (while scanning through multiple records, comparing them, etc.). I have deadlines for filing contracts. Every month deadline changes, so it isn't always on the 15th of the month or on the second Wednesday of the month. When a contract comes in and the date is entered, I need to know if it is past the current deadline and how many days past the deadline. Have deadlines in a separate Table. Contract dates are basic date fields. The catch comes when my boss tells me not to charge for days on the weekend! Obviously the deadlines occur on different days of the week, as do the contract dates. Nothing I have tried works. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated! I am ready to cry! Bev

To begin with, I have a database that is stored on a server. There is a folder in that server which is storing PDF's. I have a container field that is populated via a script with an "Insert Object" statement in it. When the user wants to populate the field, they press a button and it opens up the "Insert Object" window and the user then browses for the PDF they wish to insert, select the "Link" checkbox and that should do it. When I tested this on my desktop machine and took the server out of the picture and worked with dummy records, everything works fine. I would like to be able to disable the user's ability to change font/size/format on data entry in Browse mode. I wish my selection of font/size/format made in Layout to stick. FileMaker seems to be proud of the feature of storing text formating in the entry data. Does not appear to be any simple "plain text" field property. Then again its likely I simply don't know where to look or how to specify a search to find it here. I am having trouble with indexing of a portal. first my portal starting showing extra blank records. Now some of my portals are broken with no records showing up. My search of the forum suggests I might need to upgrade from filemaker 8 to 8.2 and the same with filemaker server. Is the right approach? Do I just download the new versions from filemaker or do I need a new cd? It has been working great for over 6 months before this. I upgraded to filemaker 8 about 6 weeks ago.

I am writing a small database that will track jobs - i have created tables that store clients, people, jobs and quotes - so far i can create a job with a automatic serial number - assign it to a client with a drop down and this pulls in the people working for that client so i can chose who requests the job in the quotes i need to select the job number from a drop down and have that pull all the information into the quote (client, people etc... from the job table that has been set previously this i cannot seem to do any advice would be grateful thanks

Hi, We have a database with 26,000 records. It has been working great, we would like to start adding the actual slides that that it tracks. We have 89,000 slides. Can I add the slides to the database in containers, or should I link them to external folders. Obviously this is going to turn into a large amout of data. What's the best way to go for expandability? It is hosted on FileMaker Server 7 on a Mac OS X.4 G4. I will probably upgrade the hardware soon. Thanks Rob

In a project table, I have an unstored calculation field that returns the name of all the employees who have entered timesheets related to a specific project. The names are separated by comas and are gathered together with a custom function that makes use of the new GetNthRecord function via a relationship (thanks to John Mark Osborne for this one). Hi everyone I need some help with a calculation.Here is a very simple example. I have 3 fields A, B and C Field A is a calculated field - simply Field B x Field C. Both B and C are Number fields. Until B & C are filled in A is empty obviously. I need the user to be able to accept the value in C as a calculation or to simply change the value in field C by typing a number directly into field C. Hello I have a database which takes address fields and combines them into one address field (for our website so we don't have to do asp stuff with lots of address lines!). So we have fields: address1 address2 address3 address4 postcode I wrote a simple CASE calculation to return results if either of lines 2 or 3 are blank (lines 1 and 4 are always full) but can't figure out what to do if BOTH 2 and 3 are blank. I'm migrating from FM6 to FM8(advanced) in WinXP. I've converted my FM6 file to FM8, and all the thumbnails JPEGs are OK and visible. All of them were Embeded in the orignial file. Despite my best attempts at avoiding this scenario, I now need to move lots of images en masse into different folders before they start breeding with each other, etc. The problem is that they are all referenced in container fields, and when I move them Filemaker loses track of where they've gone (even though it might only be to an adjacent folder). So, is there any way I can do a search and replace type of operation on the referenced paths that Filemaker stores for each image or is this information hidden within the binary bowels of the program where I can't change it? I am on the verge of giving in to Management. We generate quite a few exports either as .mer or Excel. And, no matter how I name my fields, they want the output field names 'nice.' They consider cCustomerSince as not nice. Or _pk_ContactID or BusinessType or Price_Base ... get the picture? They are tired of modifying the field names in Excel (to make them look nice by removing *my* stuff and adding the spaces back in) before they send the spreadsheets on to various businesses. Our tech group has probably been overthinking this, but here goes: We are creating a database of test items. Each record has a field that identifies the date on which the test items are used. For example, record nos. 1 to 5 might share the same 3-29-06 identifier. If we were to print 30 sets of records 1 to 5, we'd like to auto-increment the copy no. on the printout for each set. So Set 1 would all share the number "1", Set 2 the number "2," and so on up to 30. Is there a relatively painless way to do this? Thanks in advance for the help!

Have 10 item repeating requisition form, want to bounce out to quote file and show all recent quotes for the item clicked. Problem is: it always finds a match for the 1st record in repeating. I formatted the repeating field to be a button which triggedrs the script. No matter which item I click on, uses the first value.

Been awhile since I last made a post but could really use some help. I have created a data base to record hours related to specific jobs. This data will be compared to hours quoted. Here's the setup... Each Job is Unique, with anywhere from one Activity entry to 30. An employee will punch in with his/her ID, Select JobID and Activity. Then later punch out giving an elapsed time. I've been able to create a portal to list all the punches in/out per job, but I can't figure out how to sum up hours per activity and compare to quoted hours. My application has several user with diffrent access, edit or browse. They coud run big calculation, which reads and produce up to 200'000 records per calcuation. My main problem is how to unlock records via script. A rollback for the script is quite a big job, preventing an user from editing a record is also quite tough, specially if they use different timezones. Like lunch effect, causes me a problem and taking down the database is also not solution. I was thinking to creating time loops with a commit, to edit records, but I don't like the solution. (less user friendly). Any Solutions?

I have it set up so that the company table is related to the phone table by a unique customer ID. Hi: I checked my trusty book, 'FileMaker Pro 8 THE MISSING MANUAL', and it's missing all kinds of things. I have three rows of data in the body - data1 to data3. Data1 always appears in every record and there's a mix of data2 and data3 appearing. I would like to label the data on the same row in the body of the layout only if there is data present. That way, if there's no data, the fields and labels don't print and everything slides up. In the example provided, the calc doesn't work, can anyone help? Thanks in advance!
