I am not sure what this feature is called. I don't know how I ever found it to begin with. If I use the normal text tool on a layout and enter // I get a date when I print the layout. If I enter ## I get a page number. Is there a list of these functions? And specifically is there a time stamp like the date stamp? Hi, I'm having some difficulty getting a portal to work as expected in the solution I've been working on. The solution is basically a catalog of different legal documents (like deeds, mortgages, and so forth). These documents are reviewed in the context of writing a legal opinion, so the solution also tracks opinions. You could think of an opinion as a project. So it's possible that a document could be reviewed multiple times in the context of different opinions, thus a many to many relationship between documents and opinions. I have a quick question.  We use a drop down menu to choose a certain color on a work order form. We them manually fill in a circle on the form with a marker to match the color on the order. Is there a way to either trigger a colored circle when a choice is made or to change the font color when the choice is made??  Any thoughts would be helpful...keep in mind that I am a bit of a newbie with Filemaker!  I have attached a screen shot for you to look at. The field with the term "dark grey" is the drop down box.  mhburris

Hi There, I have a quick question to ask, well I think it is a quick question. Is it possible to have a feild display 2 different value lists? What I mean is, in my solution I have a field that when a certain value is set it calculates a table to get values to populate a dynamic value list. Now I need to find out if there is a way to display a static value list in the same feild should the other option be selected. Seems basic, but I'm stuck with a simple issue here: To simplify the problem, suppose I have One table "Invoices" and related table "Items". The Items of an invoice can be shipped on more than one transport, so the latter has a textfield "transportNo" whose values are stored in a valuelist that uses values from the field, so that each time a "transportNo" is added in the job, it is available in the listbox for subsequent added items. Ever since FIlemaker modified the Table Views so that users could crwate new FIELDS "on the fly", I've been kind of terrified of them -- because every once in a while *I* click on the "+" button on accident and wind up with a new Field. Usually I try to craft List Views that fulfill my clients' needs, but they almost always want to be able to use Table view, so I think I should "get over it. I have a Container field that will be used for Displaying Quicktime Files. The client wants to simply store a filepath to where the Quicktime file will "live", so I'm notusing the new remote storage option, just the old school approach. So, s I understand it, the user should click into the Container field and then select "Insert Quicktime" from the INSERT menu and then navigate to the file and bingo. I am running 12. 03 Advanced on Mac and Windows On my Mac, I created a custom menu which has, as it's last option under File... the menu item "CLose Application". When I save the app to a flashdrive and then open it on my WIndows 7 computer there, under File... is 'Close Application" AND under it EXIT. Question: "Where did this EXIT command come from? I have a layout with a Tab Control on it, housing 3 tabs. In each tab, I have a portal, all pointing to the same table occurrence, but displaying different data. 90% of the time, everything works fine. However, some of the time, when I click on a tab to switch to the data I want, the view switches to show everything as <Table Missing>, and sometimes, clicking on the 2nd or 3rd tab takes me to the 1st tab showing <Table Missing>. A second click on the desired tab causes the portal to refresh and show the proper data, but I can't figure out what's going wrong in the first place to fix it. Anyone have any ideas on how this can be fixed?

I currently have a web viewer that is displaying user avatar images in an iChat-like display window. I am currently referencing the avatar images from our company's webserver. <img src = "http://mydomain.com/FM_ICHAT_IMAGES/avatar01.jpg" /> I would rather pull the images directly from a remote container field that are being stored on a FM12A server. I have a portal with a long list of data. I have added two global fields so that the user can narrow down the results. I would like to do this real-time as they type into the global fields. I have the filter function working close enough, but what I can't seem to figure out is how to refresh the portal. Hi I am VERY new to FileMaker, having spent a wedge of cash on it some months back with the good intention of learning to develop my own bespoke solution for tracking customers, their computers and the work carried out, as well as build lists (for components of new, custom PC's) and easy reports of customer's unit's due for servicing after X months. I have a text field with a vertical scroll bar with an excess of text in each record due to limited layout space. I'm not sure the user will know to click inside the field in order to bring up the vertical scroll bar drop-down arrow. Is there a way to make this Arrow permanent? Or alternatively, I could make a tool tip that says "Click inside the text box to scroll" but how could I create a calculaiton as part of the tool tip that takes away that message once the user has clicked inside the text field? I've been on FileMaker Pro 7 Developer for ages, but I like the idea of tool tips, and so I finally I upgraded to FileMaker 11 Advanced. Yes, yes I know there is FileMaker 12 but I didn't want to go through the hassle of converting all of my existing files from .fp7. Anyway, in the Layout Inspector (which is new to me) I assume that one selects the field or the field name and then types in the text of the tool tip in the Inspector. I'm assuming that most people are choosing the field itself, rather than the name or header. Is that true?

Once I have entered Manage Scripts the keyboard shortcut to Manage Layouts (Shift-Command-L) no longer works. If I exit Script Manager the keyboard shortcut is still lost, only restarting FM re-instates the shortcut. I tried this on a virgin file and it's still the same problem, so it's not file corruption. (Apparently not a problem in Windows) Any one experienced the same or know a workaround? Mac OS X 10.6.8 FMP Advanced 12.03 Thanks

I just discovered that I can customize my toolbar in FM11. It's been a great discovery! As I was playing around in the customize window, I noticed that the toolbar screen has four buttons - New, Rename, Delete, Reset. Does this mean I can create new toolbars? The button seems to be greyed out, but why else would they have a button labeled "New"? Really, my ultimate goal is to have a toolbar that either has scripts on it, has a button that will open a new file, or both. If there is no way to create a second toolbar for this, is there a way to do either of those on the main status toolbar? Thanks, Joe

I chose a layout theme and I now want to change ALL the colors. The only problems I've run into are that I can not find a way to change the quickfind button line when it is in hover mode, and I can't change the color of tabs that are not currently chosen. Any help would be appreciated, thank you!

Okay, here's a real head-scratcher. I have a multi-part report that is, in virtually every way, behaving as expected. Expect for one Field, "LOCATION" which is the only field in a Sub-Summary part. The Field has Entries Like Box 1 Box 2 etc. In terms of Sorting and accurately ordering the hierarchy of records beneath it, it's behaving just fine. When I go to "Preview" Mode, it's looking good to go! But when I actually *print* -- or save the report as a PDF file . . . the *Numeral* isn't printing! Hi, I run a small tree business and I'm trying to create estimates that have line items linked to each tree we perform work on. I have CLIENTS --< PROPERTIES --< TREES and ESTIMATES--< SERVICELINES >-- SERVICES. What relationships and/or table occurrences do I need to create to place multiple conditional value lists inside of an ESTIMATES layout via a portal based on SERVICELINES? I think what I'm looking to do shouldn't be that hard to figure out, but for some reason, I can't really find my answer. I've searched and searched but I might be searching using the wrong question! All I want to do is have a checkbox or radio box, (or even drop-down... PNG buttons added to a layout via INSERT-PICTURE from a FMP Advanced v11.3 Windows client to (assumed to be FMPv11) server hosted database display properly on the Windows client, but cannot be seen from a Mac client. The converse is NOT true: png pictures inserted by the Mac client CAN be seen by both the windows client and the Mac client. Pre-FM12, groups of objects on a layout were selected by encircling them. If they weren't completely within the circle they weren't selected. In FM12, any object touched is selected. Is there a 'preference' in FM12 to use the old means of selecting objects on a layout? Or am I stuck with the new way which is a real pain when editing complex layouts?

I am working on making a report that shows which items a sales person had sold in a month. The way the database is set up is that there are 12 worksheets. These worksheets are used to provide a price for either different rooms or different plans depending on how the salesperson wants to price the cabinets they are selling. They can price up to 3 different cabinet styles. In FM 12 Pro Adv... I have an already existing layout with fields populating it from a table. I went to Manage Database and created 12 more all new fields in the same table. Now I want to add those 12 new fields to the same already existing layout. It seems that all I can do is to individually drag the new fields on to the layout using the Field Tool. Isn't there a way to select multiple fields (from a dialog?) and add them en masse'? I know how to do this with an all new layout. Thank you all...

Any time I try to select just one field or object in a layout I have to move any object that surrounds the one object I am trying to move. Please tell me there is some easy solution to selecting THE object that I want. Â In the attached screenshot there is a box outline that surrounds all of the fields. In order to select any one of the displayed fields I have to remove the outline. This seems crazy.

I want to record horse treatment notes in a patient's Visit Notes layout. To aid in entry speed, I want to place a series of buttons to the side of the layout (this will be for iPad), that when tapped, will add(insert, append) to text in a Notes field. Initial thoughts are to design the layout with the buttons, and associate a script that simply inserts the text into the Notes field, for that patient, on that visit. Had a layout with labels on the left and fields on the right. The fields were partially on top of the labels and I simply wanted to move them off to the right. I slid the right palette margin line some number of px to the right to make room. I grabbed all the fields and moved them some number of px to the right. Now it's messed up Browse mode. See BadLayout3.jpg. And I can't seem to get the fields to show data except for the top field in the array. All I did was attempt to move the fields. Anyone know how I can get them to show? I created a sub summary report that also uses filtered portals to create a report for our companies sales. I thought it would be neat if I could show the monthly sales by department for each year we have on record. My goal was to show each department as a row and each month's sales as columns. The report works, and shows the correct data, however it takes hours to run and summarize the data making the report unusable as it stands. I have a layouts with several global fields, each of which has a SQL driven, calculated value list attached. It works fine but I wanted to reduce the number of fields in the table for clarity sake and I was wondering if there was a way to have a single global field with multiple repetitions then use a Case function that SELECTS the appropriate value list. I am working on designing a database where someone can custom build a computer. I have tables for each type of component. I have built some conditional value lists that only show compatible parts. Now what I am trying to accomplish is how to filter out these parts to only show items that are still available. I don't want it to show items that are compatible but discontinued. I have a field that I have a drop down list that I have selected if an item is "Active", "Unavailable", "Discontinued". I am not sure how to have my my value lists filter based on this condition. I have a text field that contains a list of companies (from a contacts database). I want to be able to put this into a portal. The reason for this is to have the user be able to click on a line, and it go to a specified layout based on that. (If this is possible without doing it in a portal, then I am all ears also...) I want to create a pricing calculator for my customer service team. I want the layout to ask Size X: ___ Size Y: ___ Size Z: ___ [submit] based on that information, it will generate a price code. They will take that price code and enter it into a different database. I don't want this calculator built into the 1 database, because it may be used in other databases, or independently. Howdy, all:  I know I've seen a simple script somewhere that parses a checkbox'd value list and through a looping function, is able to create a summarized list based on the parent value list choice related children values, but I just can't find it here and online. Hi, I have a stupid problem that's been annoying me for some time now. Basically, I have an "On StartUp" script that I trigger when the user open the datafile "OnFirstWindowOpen". And the "On Start Up" script puts the user on a specific layout THAT I NEED to have priority. The only problem, Filemaker for some reason, opens with my largest layout width for a split second. Long enough to make the database look unprofessional, instead of looking to the script and holding the layout view until it's called. Hello again. Back with more on my food pantry solution. I'm trying to figure out now how to set up a portal from Session_Ops to Session_Volunteers to handle volunteer hours, sort of like a time and attendance module.  I've done up three attachments to show where I am. The problem is I can't seem to save the volunteer information for later retrieval. I envisoned that Session_Volunteers would hold all volunteer specific info like time_in and time_out in an historical context. I can't write it so that it properly saves the history.  Vol_1.jpg is what the layout looks like now. I can drop down and install volunteers at will. But Vol_2.jpg shows the Table…

Using the Starter Solution in FMPRO 12 called "Contacts" I have conditionally formatted the Work Address & Home Address Tabs (in the "Contact Details" layout) to color the tab label's text green IF there is anything in the "Work Address 1" field or the "Home Address 1" field. FM 11 Adv. Frequently, as I am working in the layout mode I’ll get the message “the layout cannot be modified in the window because it is already being modified in a different window”. The layout names then appears in the Windows menu. I have to exit FM and restart to close these windows. I know the idea is to prevent editing a record in two different windows, but editing occurs in the browse mode, and I’m working in the layout mode. This is just a database for use on my desktop PC only. What can be causing this? And when this happens, is there a way to close the window (although I did not create it) without restarting? We have a database that is our sales orders database. Filemaker 12 gave us an absolutely fantastic new feature, among many others: the gray area to the right of the layout, in layout mode. The thing is, does anyone know the nitty-gritty details on how it works, and interacts with browse or preview modes? I'd love to have it spelled out in black and white for me, to eliminate the murky grey area (haha, see what I did there? ). Anyways, the help file simply says all objects in the gray area are right-anchored, skipped in the tab order, and appear in Table view. Does anyone know how Filemaker chooses what Sample Data to present in Layout mode? I'd like to have a little better control over it, ideally, for fine-tuning field sizes and whatnot. Relatedly, does anyone know how Filemaker refreshes said sample data? For instance, if I have a global calculation field on the layout, and the result changes (but the calculation definition doesn't), what would it take for Filemaker to refresh the sample data in Layout mode, for that field, since it seems to prefer the original result from the moment Layout mode was first entered. I have layouts that are sized the same. But when I go to my Quiz that is sorted by records it takes the whole screen. The "Header", "Body", and "Footer" have the same measurements as my other layouts. I even went to the little icon in layout and made sure that the desktop is checked for 1024x768 and it is. So my "next" button is sitting in the middle of the page when I go to browse mode and the record fills the whole screen. In layout mode the button is where it is suppose to be. Please advise.

I am using FM 12 v 3 (even if v3 is buggy)  I have a main layout based on Members:   On the left is another Members TOC called Members Portal  Everything works great.... except that when I press the right (or left) 'next record' arrows, FM goes to the next Record ID and not to the next Member's Name.  Here is the script I am using: (pretty simple)   Question: "How can I, regardless of recordID, advance to the next 'Member Name' and not next RecordID?  I am almost embarassed by what should be a pretty simple and common situation... but I am stumped. Can someone give me a 'kick start'?  Thanks

I have a simple portal that i have placed a button on the portal row. I have tried just running "delete portal row" I have also tried tying it to a script that has the command "delete portal row". The problem is that if I click the button the row does not delete. Once in a while I can open up filemaker and get it to work but it is very random. I have watched the script get called in "script debugger" and have no errors. But yet it does not delete the record. Any ideas? Thanks Thom

Hi I'm currently working on a database where photo's are ordered on a website and need to be managed (via .csv imports) in FM12. This is all working pretty well so far but my problem is with the reporting/summary. The setup is that a FMdb (iPad/FMgo) generates the data that is imported into the site CMS where customers can order specific prints. That works fine. The modified data is exported (CSV) from the CMS and imported into another FMdb, that is related to the initial FMdb (where the data is generated). Ignore Below - Just realised I didn't have a surname value present in the record I was testing it on so there was none to copy/past (Is working fine)- Doh!!! Simple scenario: Contacts table includes 'FirstName' and 'LastName' fields. Also has a field 'Invoice To'. With my upgrade from 8.5->12 Filemaker has gone bananas with the font/size/color of my tab labels at the tops of my layouts. SOme layouts are fine, some have mixed with some as they were originally and the others huge light blue text. Some have tiny black text.. All show the correct parameters as the original. I'm wondering if someone can tell me if what I want to do is possible and point me in the right direction. I'm creating a list style report of postal information with six fields. I have a table of over 10,000 health codes that I'd like the user to select from but I'd like to limit the list to the most relevant ones. I've added a field in the table called "relevant" and I'd like to display all values with this field set to "Yes" When the user selects one of the codes it should populate a portal row. I know how to do it easily in MSAccess but I've tried using a multi-predicate selection in FMP12 without any success. Have any ideas? Brian

I have an unusual request - to stop people from entering the 3rd line into the address text field (they should be able to enter one line or two lines but not the 3rd line and not the gap). However hard i try, i could not figure out how to do this. This is an address field without town, county and postcode, which are in the separate fields. Users should be able to put unlimited number of characters in the first line, press enter/return, than put what ever number of characters in the second line and THAT SHOULD BE IT. They should be restricted from putting anything in the 3rd line of that particular text field. Thanks

In my FM 12 ADv app I have a button that opens a window that has the Web Viewer in it. In WV there is a simple https: URL. I do my development on my Mac. When I run the script that opens the Window and URL on the Mac everything is fast and as it should be. When I copy the same app to my Windows 7 PC it takes f o r e v e r ......................45+ seconds .................... to load. I turn on the progress bar and can see it slooooooooooooowly creep across the bottom. In both apps I am using FireFox... If I change the URL to http://www.filemaker.com it runs as expected. Have a database with 3 main tables: 1. Horse owner 2. Horse details 3. Visit Notes As one owner may have several horses, I have set up a simple portal on the Horse Owner layout which shows the 'Horse Name', and 'Date Last Modified' fields from the related Horse Details table. Obviously for a new client, the portal window is blank (no horse/s recorded yet). I want to put a simple button in the Horse Owner layout that switches to the Horse Details layout, with a new record created and ready to fill in - and related to the currently open Horse Owner. I have a portal sorted by a field 'Vendor Name' This field is text, but sometimes contains numbers, eg: Vendor 1. When I sort by this field in my portal all vendors that contain a number appear at the top of the portal, instead of under the appropriate letter. Is there a way to fix this? Cheers!

I am trying to run a list report and have it as layout and created a script for it. It is all based on info from my "clients" table. When setting it up i put to sort by sale date however it does not sort. It is a random order. When i am in the layout i try the sort tool by that particular date field and change from descending to ascending order it moves them around but in no particular oder. I can't even make sense of what it is trying to do. I can sort by other fields. Any ideas of what might be wrong with the field. The field is an automatic field that puts the date in when the record is created and shows the date as 17, November 2012

I have two tables Company & Parts. I have a one to many relationship from company::companyID -----< parts:companyID I want the user to be able to select a company from a drop down when they use the Filemaker New Record button from the toolbar. I can only see the current value list I have created if I have the customerID filled in manually, otherwise the drop down doesn't display any of the companies so the user can make a selection.
