  1. Hi all. Noob. 8.5, Mac. I've got a quick & dirty database that allows one to enter related child records via a portal. Not the recommended solution, but it's really just for (my) training. It appears that when you begin to enter data in a portal row, the next row's fields become 'active', highlighting field borders and activating popup menus (although they all remain blank). I'm sure that a new record isn't being created, but it's odd looking, and implies to a user that another record was created. The portal's deletion mechanism also implies that there's one there.     Hi This is my query. I have a button on LAYOUT A to create a new project. When this button is pressed, the script takes you to LAYOUT B and creates a new record(Project) for you. After creating, it goes to the first record and shows that one instead of the newly created record. I added GO TO Record LAST in Script step and it does that but after the step is completed, it goes back to record 1. This is really driving me crazy. I do have a commit record after New Record request. Any help would be very welcome... Thanx

    Hi there, I'm building a task management database, and have hit a problem with using tabs on the layout. What I want is to have seven tabs, showing the upcoming seven days, letting the user flick between them and see what tasks lie ahead for them. I'd like to have the names of the days on the tabs themselves, but this needs to change dynamically. So on Monday the first tab says Tuesday, next one says Wednesday. On Thursday the first tab would say Friday, second Saturday etc. The problem is that using Filemaker 8s built in tabs layout tool thingy, it seems that the tabs can only have basic text names. Is there any way to use the same list to generate an Id number that is _NOT_ in use? Alternately, is there any way to make a value list of numbers NOT in another value list, or in a specific field in a multi-record DB?

    I've started playing around with the data:URI trick shown off by "The Bridge", and SVG to allow the dynamic creation of graphics in the webviewer. My examples are pretty lame so far, but there is clearly a lot of potential here. Take a look at the attached fp7 file. The sample file is setup for Mac users, and you'll need to download the SVG plug-in from Adobe if you haven't yet (the link is in the fp7 sample file). Hopefully this will motivate someone to do something cool, I'd like to see a custom function that constructs a pie-chart, for instance. :) svgSample.zip

Basically I have a bunch of records that need to be printed out in a report that looks exactly like a pre-existing MS Word document. The information is contained in a table with 1pt borders for all of the rows/columns/cells. With sliding, merge fields and horizontal and vertical graphical lines I have managed to create a document that is 95% what I need.     Preface: I am using FMP 8.5 and Running it thru FM Server 8.0v4 on a Windows 2003 server. We are autheniticating via external server. I received the Web viewer example from Filemaker and thought that I might be able to utilize the graph examples that were included. After some tweeking I was able to get them to do just what I wanted. The problem is that after I copy the new file to the Databases folder and start the FileMaker Server service, the web page in the viewer cannot locate the VW.html file. Whats strange is that the file is found when I'm connecting with out the files being hosted by the FM Server service. If anyone has any experience witht his I'd be happ…

    I have a layout with a title header, regular header, body and footer. Everything in the body is sliding up and slides great! But no matter what... it always seems to print two pages. Anybody think of a reason why it would do that? Is there something I have to do to the body so that it doesn't always show 2 pages even if all the data has moved to the first page? Oh and just incase, there's TONS of room on the first page when I test it. I'm puzzled

  10. I have 3 Tabs (One, Two, Three) which each contain 64 Unique fields in 8 rows by 8 columns. The first field in each row holds a unique ID number. This unique ID number is currently being input by typing. I have a portal which contains the unique ID number that is currently being typed into the Tab. What I want to do is: Click on the ID field and have the Unique ID number in that field placed inside the Tab ID Number field.     I am trying to figure out how to handle this problem, and I am sure the experts on here know the answer. I have a layout that has a value list to select the employee. The value list shows related values based on a table that filters out employees that are not mine. So when a Supervisor goes to the layout and makes a record, when he selects an employee, only his show up. The Supervisor may have 13 employees, but if i didn't do this, all 350 would show up in the pop-up list. If I am looking at one of the records and duplicate it, then go change who the employee is, I see only my employees. When I click on new record, which is what I would really want to do, I g…

The related table has say, 20 records relating to the first master record. When I want to print the one master record i wanto print the 20 related text bits with it. Easy I hear you say, just smack a portal on your print layout, give it say 50 instances and set sliding printing "up" and bingo it all will print.     I have used the infininate assignments example from filemakermagazine to create a 5 level dynamic value list. In the sample filemakermagazine uses a portal to select from that list. I am hoping to show the parent list items in 1 window, and show the children for each subsequent level in its own value list display. Hence, for a five level list like mine, there should be five windows, each one showing the available selections based on the parent.     I have a database with the following tables: Customers Orders Products I have done a layout for the order that is linked using a relationship to the customers table (Customers::CustomerID linked to Orders::CustomerIDfk). It works fine However, I have also done a portal in order to select the different products bought by a customer. I have established a relationship between the order table (Orders::ProductIDfk) and the Product table (Products::ProductID). I want to be able in my order layout to add records via the portal but it doesn't work. What am I doing wrong : Hope you can help...am i missing something ?

As an example lets select to purchase an ad: First would be a drop down list of the publication type (weekly mailing, seasonal, annual directory, etc.), then based on which one is chosen we now have a second value list that directly reflects the first choice.   26. Is there a way to show/hide an item on a layout based on given criteria? For instance, in our system there are times when we print a different invoice for the customer based on actual items on that invoice. We have a script that prints off an invoice and runs through If/Then check to see what items are on the invoice and decides which layout to use to print the invoice. I'd like to the same type of thing with actual items on a layout. If I create a button on a layout, but I only want that button to show up if the field Auction_Status = 'Current' for example. Any information on how I could do this would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

On the main data layout, there is a portal and that is one of the fields by which records can be selected for reporting.     I print an attendance roster of members eligible to attend faculty meetings, some who have voting rights, some who do not. If a vote is going to be taken in the meeting, we need to accurately count the number of voters to establish whether a quorum has been reached, in order to make the vote official. I used to have the names formatted as such: printed in red for voters and black for non-voters. But these prickly professors were offended by being marked in red (or not marked in red), so I created a calculation field which displays a discrete * by the names of the voters so we can take our necessary count.     Using 8.5 Advanced on XP SP2. Problem has happened on all version 8 releases, and maybe 7 although I don't really remember. On imported graphics, things like a Photoshop border with a gradient shadow, when I stretch it, it starts to get lighter and lighter on the right side. The pixels start to disappear. If I put it in a container and then stretch it, same problem. Anyone see this before and have a solution? This never happened in 6 or below. Thanks, Steve

What I have done is create a table that holds pricing information and this table has multiple entries for each item depending on how many different price options there are. Works fine except for one picky detail....I find that when I'm doing data entry I prefer to use all keyboard shortcuts and not use the mouse....when I tab into the dropdown list and hit the down arrow key to select a price, it selects the second value in the list not the first one.     This is definitely a newbie question, but here goes: I've got a field in the checkbox format. I would like to show the checkboxes, but not the border around the entire field. I've tried every possible manipulation I can imagine in trying to remove the border while retaining the checkboxes, but they seem to be linked in their formatting. As you will see on the attached, this field is currently really ugly--it works on my layout, but it looks bad. Can I keep the checkboxes but lose the border? Or are they considered the same 'thing' by FM? Thanks!

  36. I have two tables... Schools List Courses/teachers I check if the ID of the school matches the ID with the course/teacher. From there I print out reports to each school showing the complete list of what courses each teacher is going to using portals. No problems. But... The last report I did was four pages for each school, on page three I needed to show all of the teachers in the school not just ones which were allocated courses. Also since some teachers are in the system more than once becuase they are going to more than one course I needed only unique values.     Hello, I open a pretty large, multi-file solution each day. Sometimes the display refreshes many times before stabilising. Most times, this does not happen. Today it happened a long while after I opened the solution. It just went on and on. A bit of background which may or may not be related: 1. I zip a backup on a remote machine each night. 2. The zip file is transferred and unpacked locally. 3. I then open it. Anybody else suffer 8.5 hiccups? Any ideas of why or how to avoid it? Norman

  39. I run ASP applications within Web Viewers inside of our FileMaker files. It works great, but I've kinda stumbled into something and I'm not exactly sure what's happening. This particular ASP script that I'm running marks invoices paid/shipped on eBay when we mark them paid/shipped in FileMaker. I used to do this using Open URL and it would actually open your browser to run the page. This was fine except the pop-up kinda annoys some people. I created a separate layout that holds nothing but a big web viewer.     I currently have 3 fields relating to an employees employment date: The first field is the date of hire The second field is a calculation of years from the first field. The third field shows an employees exit date. My question is this: is it possible to have the second field (calculation of years worked) stop calculating the years if a date is entered into the third field (date of exit) I know I could get a calculation from field one and three after the employee leaves however I do not want a calculation of that nature, I need to be able to look at the field and get a “live” display of the worked years.     I have a laptop that runs both Filemaker Advanced 8.0 V3 and 8.5. It's a Dell Inspiron 9300 with 1gb of RAM and an ATI Radeon X300, Windows XP Pro SP 2 all updates. For whatever reason, if my laptop is not restarted for a few days, the display of Filemaker gets out of whack. If I go into Layout mode, I can't see any of the borders of any text objects or any objects at all. When I go into a field and I try to type into it, you can't see any of the text you are typing. "TabTwo" is an expanded version showing several additional fields from the same Table. The two portals are sorted the same so they align properly (e.g., the 4th record in Table is the 4th row in both portals) when the user clicks between TabOne and TabTwo.     I have 5 seperate files, each containing > 600 fields with specific tab orders. When the customer makes a change which adds a field or changes the location of a field I have to change the entire tab order from that point on. Or do I?     I integrated the Chartmaker that Filemaker has on their site into a solution i am developing and i am having a problem with it. It seems that when ever i go to close the file using the buttons at the top left (i am on a Mac using FMA 8.5) it closes the window but then it crashes the application. If i go to a different view or Table then close it doesnt crash on closing. The only difference is that the page that is crashing has the web viewer in it showing the charts. Has anyone else run into this problem? I have a suspicion that it maybe because the Chart is constantly refreshing and closing the window like that causes the crash?     I have a report layout which has a letter on it. In the middle of the letter I have a 12 row portal. Each row in the portal has 2 rows of fields, the top one is merge field with a description and cost, the one below is a paragraph of formatted text which describes the item. I have the portal expanded down quite a bit to make sure there is enough room to fit the varying lengths of the description text. I have set the sliding to All above/reduce the size of enclosing part. But it's not reducing the extra space in the portal at all. It’s leaving it the exact same size. Any ideas? I just can't figure out what's wrong.

    I have a value list on the current table that has become too large, so I have transferred the list to a separate table with each item being an individual record. I have set up a relationship between the two tables and a drop-down list that can access this table. My problem is that I wish to retain the existing data from that value list for the current records but be able to utilize the new method for new records and perhaps even change previous ones. Unfortunately changing the field drop-down list from the old value list to the new one causes the old data to disappear.

    I hate these.... I have been using 8.0 since it came out but have not gotten any of the upgrades yet. I am also on Windows XP. Had no issues then yesterday I did SOMETHING not sure what. Now when i RUNNING FM and i try and copy, cut, or paste in any application it hangs all the applications which i have to force end by hitting the close X or using the task manager. Besides reinstalling any ideas on how to fix this? I have tried other brand new DBS with no success. I only need to see the monthly totals, for example...     Hello, I am working on a invoicing solution for the company I work for, and as part of this solution I need to print off a calculated number of labels. (For packaging) I have a count field with the number of products on the invoice. And what I would like to do is to use this value to print off that number of labels.   66. Hi - I'm trying to create a layout for assigning items to something like an invoice. No problem creating a portal to show items already assigned (ie related) to that invoice via the invoice ID. But I'd like to have a second portal on the layout, showing items that have not yet been assigned to any invoice to pick from. I initially tried to figure out a way to show any item with nothing in the invoice ID field - but by definition those are unrelated records, so couldn't figure out how to show in a portal. I also would like to capture their IP Address and Computer Name. Get(HostIPAddress) and Get(HostName) gives me the IP Address and Name of the Server where the files are hosted but I would like the client IP Address and Client Computer Name which the programmers are using.   68. I'm not sure I'm explaining this correctly - but the problem is that the layout stops showing the sub summary sort after I've gone back into the table to make some data changes. The sub summary is based on the "street name" field (and there's a "street name summary" field )and then there are a series of summary fields, let's just call them a, b, c,d, etc. For each street, I get the totals for each of the summary fields. I purchase the same product from different suppliers depending on price then I create a purchase invoice (based on my suppliers invoice)to enter the new purchases. I have a date field and I want the date shown to turn red if it is within a 7day window, so the viewer can see that the date is approaching soon. In other words, exactly what the Ctrl+Home and Ctrl+End keys do from a PC keyboard. I've been working with the Set Selection[Record::Field] but can't get the results I need. I was building a layout with a field for a “Course” selection, I was just going to us a value list with drop-down arrow on the field, and then I found out that they had about 400 courses. How can I effectively implement a solution so that the user will not have to type each course ID in the field? The only thing I can think of is using the value list, and have the auto complete enabled and not show the drop-down arrow on the field?     Hi! I need to update some data in my solution from web source. Is it possible to fetch address to web viewer like mysite.com/data.php?variable=5 and have php process request and return data in XML? Then I could grab data with GetLayoutObjectAttribute (object; "content") and import from XML format to correct fields. I was thinking about ftp but I can't do it without plug-in.   86. I've converted a Customized ValueList containing a code and code description to a related table occurance with an ID field, code field & code desription field. I need to load the existing records in the main table occurance with the values from the original value list. I've tried importing, I've tried doing a find on a particular value from the value list field and then attempted a replace field contents on the two new fields from the related table which are displayed on the layout of the main table occurance.     I'd like to use a consistent GUI for the Contacts database I'm developing, with navigation buttons on the right. However, I can't follow this through to the List View (or table view, for that matter). So I thought I'd try and show the records (found set) in a portal on a Form layout so I can keep the GUI consistent. Problem is, I can't get the relationship to work properly and display all records in the found set of the primary table. I have created two tables, I want to enter data into table #1 and have it also fill in table #2. I want to be able to delete the data from table #1, yet have the data in table #2 remain, I guess what I want is a record kept of the data from table #1 even though it has been deleted.   92. I am working on a relatively complex relational database that logically has different tables for each category of data. I want the user interface to be intuitive and simple so tabbed panels seem like the obvious choice. A tree structure would also be OK but that solution is not built into FMP 8.5. I set up a preliminary tabbed layout with more tabbed panels inside of each outer tabbed panel. In FM6 if you created a value list using values from a related file's fields with 'Also Display value from' the second field, and then when you use a popup menu, when you selected a value, ONLY the first field's value is displayed. However in FM8 once selected, it displays BOTH field 1 and field 2. In other words, lets say you have two fields that you select to be your value list. The first field is a person initials and the other one is the name.     I'm trying to display a preview of PDF files in a container field. This is in a cross-platform FM8 database stored on a server. The users are 1/3 Mac, 1/3 Windows 2000 and 1/3 Windows XP. I could get the file preview to display in Windows 2000 and Mac by using a Windows 2000 PC to drag the file from it's folder on the network into the container field. The first page of the file then displays as a preview on the Mac and Windows 2000 PCs. BUT on Windows XP the preview doesn't show unless you click on the container field. Great, done, no problems, easy.
