    I have a solution with over 100 layouts. I'm trying to organize the layout list so that the developer(s) can easily find things. I have some dummy layouts that are named "----- Reports -----" and "---- Data Entry ---- " etc. This helps visually organize the layouts. I'm using Mac OS X and FM 8 Advanced. However, I'm having a hard time figuring out the type-ahead behavior. For example, I have layouts named "Worker.Contact", "Worker.Financial", and "Worker.best" . If I click the Layouts popup and start typing "worker" it will jump to "Worker.best" which is third in the list. I wish it would jump to the first "worker" layout instead. …

    Here is what I was envisioning: -- Data entry tabs and other layouts for data entry or editing -- Reports or forms that print out from populated data (many related tables) My users are accustomed to being able to edit reports/forms prior to printing. Is that normal? It gets complicated, because of portals (containing historical data) and other things that I have yet to implement and have no idea how that would work if they enter straight onto the form.   5. I have a pop-up menu that disappears after selection on Windows but not Mac machines running on Server 8. The menu is visible until the user selects a menu choice.   7. Hi, I am updating a Filemaker Pro database file version 5 i think (.fp5) I was working at the office on a mac in filemaker pro version 6v.4 to make changes to the current database. The program(database) is a label system which you enter some data in some text boxes, and then you select from a list of buttons on the side to decide what type of label you want the data to go on which type of label. i.e. a cd label, a dat label, a cassette label, etc. It works pretty well, (when it works).     Hello - I've been assigned to create some reports from a simple FM file that my supervisor gave me. I created a report layout that uses meeting dates as a break field, displays the items reviewed on that date, then shows a summary field (count) of the items in the trailing sub-summary section. This layout works great and is nicely formatted, so I duplicated and modified it in order to start on a second report. The second report uses manufactured part numbers as its break field, and a "Total Of" summary field in the trailing sub-summary section. This summary field is supposed to display the total of the "Quantity" field for all records in the sub-summary section.…

    Hello, I am trying to construct a database and invoicing system for my dad's small business. I want to be able to make something like a dynamic repeating field of entries for the line-item part of the invoice. As it is right now, the Started Solution I am using allows for up to 8 rows of line-item input. If I fill in 3 rows, it still print out the other 5 rows as empty, which looks very impersonal. I want the invoice to be able to automatically trim the maximum repeated fields to the minimum amount of field that I have actually filled in. As it stands, if I ever want to change any part of that, I have to go through and change each layout, one by one. One field "Direction" returns "up" or "down". Is there some way to color "up" blue and "down" red?     I'm a beginner and need some assistance. I have a student database with multiple related tables. One of these tables is a test scores table. The testscores table has multiple rows for a student. The rows have a student id (key), test id (e.g. SAT or ACT), test component (e.g. Verbal, Math, etc) and a test score. Rows - e.g. one row with 0001 SAT Verbal 800, another row with 0001 SAT Math 800, another row with 0001 SAT COMPOSITE 1600.     I have a summary field which displays the total of values in related records. However, if any field is selected for editing on this layout, the summary field value doesn't appear when I move on to the next record. I assume that this is because the summary field can't store the results of the calculation. I can only get the summary value to reappear if I: - deselect all fields for editing - move to another record then back again, with no fields selected. Is there any way to make the summary field's value stay on screen for subsequent records I visit without having to do the above?

    I have a portal which allows the creation of new records. The user enters some of the data in the portal (eg Name, Position). I use a go to related record script which opens another layout in a new window to allow the user to add the other details (eg address, phone etc). The problem is that the record in the new layout cannot be modified because it is being modified in the first window. This only happens when adding a new record - it works fine if I only want to modify an existing one. Is there a simple solution?     Sorry if this has been asked and answered before. I tried searching for a solution, but didn't find one. In going from 6 to 7, I combined about 10 databases into one. The letter layouts from each of those 10 databases are being used in the new database. This creates a huge list when you look at the layouts. Is there a way to manage the layouts with folders like in a favorites list in a web browser? Or is it possible to attach certain layout names to one layout like a donations layout would only display the names of various thank you letters. Thanks for any help John

Our problem is that we require a more visual gantt style interface for data entry than filemaker can provide. We need a view that has name and task in the first two columns with each subsequent column representing a dynamically generated daily date. A task range would be represented by a range of 1's. I made a layout, just using text with tags for the fields, and the code appears the way I want it, but I can't select it to copy it.     Hi Guys, Has anyone managed to turn the borders around repeating fields off? Ive got several repeating fields which are containers, which contain solid colours. Around each repitition I get a white border going around these colours (even though its a hairline)it looks like an eyesore on my layout. I've got an invoice layout where I sub-divide our billable items by category, and I'm trying to see if there's a simple way to prevent the category heading (leading sub-summary part) from being orphaned at the bottom of a page while the items it pertains to break to the following page?     I have an Invoice layout, which works fine in browse mode, all info correct, etc. The Invoice number and customer name appear as merge fields in the header and again in the footer (same merge fields). When I switch to preview mode, The header is correct, but the footer now shows data from a different record. What did I do wrong? This is dang frustrating.

    I am trying to figure out how to divide a field that uses ";" as a divider in it. Example: In my paperwork the Color field is filled in with something like R134;L228. These two numbers reference colors for lighting. I have a field that is Color 1 and another that is Color 2. I would like the R134 to end up in Color 1 and L228 to end up in color 2. I understand the basic logic of the calculation, but I don't know how to write the calculation for Color 1 field. I'm having no problem with testing for field empty but I can figure out how to select the field I clicked on.     My file has a damaged layout that I can't delete. Everthime I try to delete the layout, the program will quit unexpectedly. The file is otherwise functioning well. One holding the part of the number before the decimal and another containing only the 2 digits after the decimal.     In tweaking an invoice layout, I seem to have introduced a quirk in the way row #1 of the LineItems portal appears in Preview mode. The value in column 1, normally centered, is shifted to the right a quarter-inch and truncated. The value in column 4 is missing. The other values in row 1 are fine. Rows 2 and up are formatted correctly. The problem doesn't appear in Browse mode, nor does it appear when the document is actually printed. But the Preview looks wrong.   50. Hello, I am new to Filemaker and this might be a stupid question and I am sorry if it has been asked before, but I googled and googled and cannot find an answer. My question is how can you separate the layout popup-menu so that when you click on the layout popup-menu instead of scrolling up and down and up down due to the tremendous forms is there a way to divide the layout popup-menu into two columns or more.     I know there's been plenty of discussion about fonts looking bad in cross-platform databases, but: I'm on a Mac (OS X 10.4.6), and ever since FM 6.0, almost all fonts look just horrific in FileMaker, especially if they're any smaller than 12 points. This is true even with the ones you'd think would be pretty universal, like Times or Helvetica. I don't have this problem with other applications. I'm not crazy about Verdana, but it seems to be the least-screwed-up sans-serif font I can use. Any suggestions -- like, is there a setting in FileMaker that I should have known about by now? Thanks.   57. I have a database that I'm going to distribute as a runtime solution. I want the user's information to appear in the header of every report. This information is really unrelated to the rest of the data in the database. The reports are pre-built for the end user, so database fields were the way I was going to go, not text labels. I've tried using a table to hold the user's information, but the report layout does not want to display these fields because the table is unrelated to the data being displayed in the body. I have made a layout that is a standardised letter that has fields for title, name and address. When i preview the letter. it shows the title, name and address but they have a big gap between the fields. The fields are the same size as the box they are made in on the layout page.     I've attached a demo file showing how I've tried to do alternating row colors in list view. I want uc_RowBackground to completely fill each row with the calculated color, but I am unable to get rid of a transparent 1-pixel border. In the demo file, this is where you see the pale purple background peeking through around the edges of the alternating gray and peach boxes. I want for gray and peach to be juxtaposed seamlessly.     I defined a lay out for data entry by key board. However, filemaker won't let me enter data. I am in browse mode and created three records. When I click into the fields they do not get activated.     I'm creating a database that uses a value list from a table. The user is allowed to add and remove values from this table. I have a checkbox that toggles an "Active" boolean for that entry. This Value List/database table is used for data entry later in another section of the database as a drop-down list. How do I get this drop-down value list to display only the values that are boolean "Active" as described above? I've tried a self-referencing as described in the FMP help, by adding a second boolean field that is automatically filled with a "1". No luck so far.

Now as of today, in layout mode, my fields are displaying some weird information. Such as: "Powerfull Scripts", "Customizable" and on some fields it is showing input values from my value lists.   71. I am looking to create a layout that will display information to clients in full screen, with a forwards and back button, so it looks more like Powerpoint than Filemaker. They will not have control over moving between pages, so there is no issue with how the records are sorted prior to display, or restricting them from accessing parts of the database. As I understand it if I use Kiosk mode that applies to all users, is there a way to achive this?

  72. When I have the 'view object size box' open if I key in 0 pixels from the top and 0 pixels from the left it defaults to 12 from the top and 17 from the left.     I used to have data into a global field when using FMP 8 networked, but when I moved to FMP 8 Server the same solution is not working, the global field retains the data only while the solution is open, after quiting and reopening the updated data dissapears only from global fileds. I want a button whose label and function change depending on the data: specifically, it goes from "Invalid" to "Make Valid", depending on and setting/emptying a timestamp field indicating when the data was known to be invalid. Sounded like a job for a calculation field. What I want to do is be able to format the color of a date (red if greater then due date). That said, I also want to make use of FM's date format in layouts. For instance, in some places I need to just show day/month and not year. Can I have both and still only use one calculation field?     Alriiight...I've been working at getting a Percent of Total field to display subtotals as percentages of the final total (hence the fieldname). To derive this I have two Summary fields: SumTotalProblems and SumPerProblems. The former is a Count of the Primary Key field (ID) and the latter is a Fraction of Total of the Primary Key field (formatted as a percentage in the layout). The weirdness sets in when I run the report and sort based on the break field. I've included a screenshot of what happens and another of the table structure.     Hello: I have a database set up for a client-top is basically contact info; bottom I have a portal that connects to another database which has notes on the client, by date. Each client has multiple records, based on project #. She wants a report to print up with status notes. I am having trouble setting up a report to ONLY show the last note added. I can sort the notes, to show the last note added, when you look at it in the regular view, however in the report view, it shows all of them, just in order of date. With multiple fields to each record is there a way for me to have displayed/printed out onto a single or continous sheets of all those different fields but under the same record with the same info?     I'm developing a solution to be used by both WinXP and OSX users. I have begun inserting graphics (buttons and the like) using the jpeg format through photoshop in WinXP. However, when I open my database in OSX the graphics do not display at all. (I get the windows logo where the graphics should be) How should I be inserting graphics in to my solution to ensure cross platform compatability? Do I have to make 2 different versions?     Ok, somewhere along my development line I read that if you have multiple telephone numbers for your contacts (these days don't we all?)you should set up a separate table for Telephone Numbers. I also incorporated a Telephone Format custom function as well. Problem is custom function format doesn't accomodate international numbers. So, I set up a separate field for International numbers. My regular numbers are in a portal. Here's what I would like to do: Find a new custom Function that accomodates Intl as well as domestic numbers.     I have created pop-up windows with scripted user abort off/hide status area/pause. This works fine. Users cannot do anything until they click one of the buttons on the pop-up. The close box is not active. However, the resize box is active, so the user can monkey with the size of the window. Is there some way I can disable this? Also, I've had a user request to "dim" or gray-out the close box since it isn't useable. Is there anyway to customize title bars? Thanks for any advise!

    O.K., I've figured out (finally -- on a 4th pass of the layout wizard) how to make my report group properly. MY REMAINING ISSUE is how to get the listed items to be separated by commas across the page -- rather than printed in vertical columns. In the accompanying database, the word “Clear” would show all synonyms separated by commas: Clear -- Bright, Transparent, Lucent, < . . . and so on> I've turned on the Slide Field option to no avail.     Is there any possible way to keep FileMaker from placing the black outline around a text field when it's selected by the user for editing -- or maybe change the color of the line? Turning off Show Text/Field Boundaries doesn't work, nor does placing the field behind a white line frame.     My layout contains a rectangle which surrounds a group of fields: [Name] [Company] [Address1] [Address2] [City] [state] [Zip] Company and Address 2 may be blank. I want the rectangle to slide upward, along with the fields it contains, but I don't want the fields within it to slide relative to one another.     I would like to know if there is a way to manually insert forced page breaks like those that can be inserted when using MS Word. I have a layout with a header and title header. the little dotted lines that are supposed to represent the page are severly skewed when those two parts are added. I have to flip back and forth between Layout and Preview modes and move the fields up and down and it is getting very annoying and slow. It's also very tiring to finally get the fields on the right page only to have the top margins vary from page to page. I am not opposed to a work around but I don't want it visible to the end user. Any help would be appreciated!!

    I have built a invoice report that list line items by category. The category is in a sub-summary part while the line items are in a "body" part. When the line items are broken up to the next page, I would like for the category label to repeat on the next page with an additional label "...continued".     Hi all, and thanks in advance yet again for answering another of my noob questions. I'm trying to create a simple report that shows total time billed for each staff member. I created a layout with one sub-summary part containing the standard fields "Staff" and "Hours Worked". The sub-summary part is set to sort by "Staff". What I get in preview mode however is a normal list view of each record for each staff member with the individual hours worked for each record.
