Hi all, I am relatively new to filemaker, and would really appreciate some help! I've created an email template using as an example: "Dear" & (Space) "name" & field 1 & field 2 etc. I want to add the records from a portal which shows the data from a related table. For example, portal data shows for a specific record field 3 = Jackson, field 3 = Redding, field 3 = Wonder. How do I get these into the template above? I just upgraded from FMP7 to FMP11 and am having problems with the tabs feature. I created 3 tabs. I had 15 fields of which I wanted to place 5 under each tab. When I put 5 of my fields in one, they show up in each tab. If I place another 5 in another tab these also show up in all tabs. How do I make each set of 5 fields show up in each of my three tabs individually?

One of the graphical issues I find myself burning hours chasing my tail on is how Portals and the fields within them behave appearance-wise when you click into them Right now I have a simple situation where I have a 1-record portal holding a single text field. The portal is filetered so that it displays the data corresponding to the active row in a 10-row portal to its left. Works fine, function-wise. We want to write and edit simple HTML in a Filemaker field, which is later exported to our web site. This includes things like adding bold to text and inserting live email addresses. I see no WYSIWYG way of doing this. So... Has anyone developed a mini-HTML editor that allows this to be done easily, as it would in a wiki (or indeed when posting messages here)? What's the easiest way of rendering the field so that users can see the results of their work? What's the best way of handling the fact that Filemaker's returns in text fields don't automatically turn into the tags required by web pages? Many thanks in advance.

My staff work to appointments and I am creating a database for these appointments. I have created a value list which contains the names of the staff members who are working during the hours of any given appointment but I would really like to be able to create a value list which narrows it down to those who are actually available - that is to say, those who are working and not already occupied in another appointment. I think I can get this result by writing a script, but is there a more straightforward way by creating a new relationship? I usually hide the toolbar in my solutions but I know there is a movement now to show the toolbar, particularly in FMP v.10+. I have a solution in FMP v.11 and I would like to show the top part of the toolbar (the left/right arrows, found count, quickfind, etc.) but I would like to hide the small section below (Layout: , View As:, etc.) - see attachment for the section I would like to hide. Is this possible, or is it an all or nothing kind of thing? Thanks.

Hi all, This is probably a stupidly simple question but I can't figure it out. I've just converted out databases to FM7 and fields from a certain relaionship show <<Index Missing>> in browse mode, instead of the data. Not all records had a value in these fields in the old system, but they didn't show that, they were just blank. The relationship links to a calulation field and as far as I can tell everything is as it was in the old system. Was something wrong in the old system that just didn't show up or have I done something wrong. Any help would be great.

something has happened to my "solution" and I dont know what it is: every drop down list and menu now requires me to hit the return key before the highlighted value is placed in the field. I dont know what I changed but all I used to have to do was scroll to the value I wanted and click on it. Help!?

Filemaker Pro 10 Advanced. We're having a problem with portal autosort I have a repeating field list on the left and a matching portal on the right that pulls corresponding data from a related table. The user types a word on the left and the related word appears in the right-hand column (the portal). So far, so good. The correct data appears. But... the portal is sorting it (I don't have any sort values set in portal preferences). This is NOT what we want. I have an order tracking file. each order has any number of line items in the order. When i update the status of each line item they show the status of the item in any portal that diplays that line item, Either orderered packaaged billed or delivered. Is there a way to make the order itself show a status that represents the status' of all its line items together. So for example if an order has three line items and all their status' are set to packaged, the order istelf in the order portal will automatically display a status of packaged. Thanks Erik

I'd like to create some drop-down lists where a user can specify their favorites to appear in their favorite order at the top of the list, and then all of the system-provided values would follow that (sorted in alphabetical order). I created a calculated field that takes a repetition text field from the user preference table, and I concatenate it with a value list that has all of my system-provided values (just a lookup on a table). However, FM8 seems to be sorting the resulting multi-value text string that I'm returning before it pops-up in a dropdown list. So my entire purpose is undermined. I thought this would be pretty easy, but I had an extra bowl of Frosted Dingbat Flakes for breakfast! I am trying to make some simple 'Flash Cards' for my school: Each record has a question, a category, the answer, and the reference. The question and category fields need to go on the front of the flash card and the answer and reference fields need to go on the back of the card. I'm trying to develop a portal that will display all items that match a value in a global field. The trick is that I want the portal to dynamically filter the displayed information based on the global value as it is being typed into the global field. The best example I can think of is to visit the Extron.com web site. On their home page in the upper right corner is a 'search' field. As you type in data [i.e. 70-684-01], you'll see the displayed values continually grow smaller as you enter more specific information. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

I have a database that I am using for a coffee ordering solution. I can go to a customers profile and through a portal create a new order for a specific amount of coffee by weight and bags. I want to be able to see how much I have to make without having to go to each customers order profile and add the order amounts together. So for example I want to be able to click on a button and it takes me to a portal and shows me how much i need to make by automatically adding all the orders together and displaying them in like 5 pound increments. Hi all, I think that I am making a task harder than it needs to be. From my "Home" table I have a portal of related "External Companies". These "External Companies" have a related "Address" table for entering multiple addresses. From the "Home" table I want to filter (via temp field in "Home" table) the "External Companies" by fields in the related "address" table. PNG graphics placed into container fields and resized down look poor (not smooth). These same graphics have looked good in a solution I produced two years ago and have used in Mac OS, Win XP, and Win Vista. Now, in Windows 7, they look poor. The edges are not smooth and they appear pixelated. Has anyone else seen this issue? This problem occurs in both FileMaker 10.x and 11.x. I've tried the database both locally and opened from a server. I've tried loading gifs in instead of PNGs. Still bad. It appears to be an issue with how FileMaker "smoothly" scales these graphics within the operating system? I'm hoping somebody out there has an answer or at least knows…

I ran in to an odd problem the other day. I have created a calculated containerfield containing a png graphic set from another containerfield in wich I keep the original graphics. I have created a quite large pie chart in Photoshop 259x259 pixels to be exact. Saved as a png (save for web and devices). and inserted picture into a containerfield with 20 repetitions. One rep for each 5%. The calculated container fetches graphics from this field. The actual field on the layout is just 20x20 pixels large, but on other layouts I might need a larger one. Hi. I have a layout that has a single line of data and is setup to display in List view. For some reason, if that layout is maximised then the screen displays as many lines as there are records, and not the footer at all, but not-maximised displays correctly. I have several other layouts that are used in a similar way and these work fine. I have been through many attributes but cannot see what may be causing this. Anybody give me a clue please? Greg

I am trying to create a portal from pictures table to inventory table that contains only one switchable image (through a joint table - because some parts are going to use same picture, this way I will save memory). I have a value list that pulls values from a table's field. I want to show all the values (as normal) - except for one of the values. Hello, I'm looking for a nice way of selecting multiple items on a layout. I noticed you can't do a multi selection list in filemaker. What I have right now is a checkbox set, which seems to do what i need it to, but i wish it was a little easier to use like a multi select list (like in HTML). Hi, I have one table with plenty of contacts in it. In a second table I have record let's call it "person" where one of contact is assigned to task. Because of versatility I'm not using contact's names but ID of person instead. By using of popup list I can see names again. Some of the contacts became inactive by the time and I don't want them see in the popup list anymore. So I made filtered list of contacts based on attribute "active". What I don't know yet is how to fix the fact that all tasks where was used now inactive person show only ID because isn't present in popup list. I hope I expressed my problem clearly. Thank you.

I am using FM 10 in windows XP. The web viewer object in my layout is smaller then most web pages, so there are usually scroll bars to scroll left and down. I have a script which feeds URLs that are stored in a FM database to the web viewer. When "standard" web pages are shown (ie: "www.anypage.com'), everything works fine. The problem is when the URL references an online database. Example: http://anypage.com/team.php?ID=176905 Sometimes this page displays correctly in the web viewer, and sometimes it has scrolled down and left by about 40 pixels or so on both axis, so that the top and left sides of the page are not visible. I'm having a little trouble with filtering a portal on a self-join. My relationship is a cartesian between VIEWER_vwr::ID and CalculationsFL::name (though, with a cartesian join, I'm not really sure it matters, as long as both fields are indexed) and my filter is as follows: If ( not IsEmpty ( VIEWER_vwr::filter_g[2] ) ; PatternCount ( VIEWER_vwr::filter_g[2] ; CalculationsFL::name ) ; 1 ) The portal shows all the records, but as soon as I type something into the global filter, the portal displays nothing. The global filter on the layout, by the way, is the second repetition. Any ideas what I am missing? Thanks.

I have a very simple setup: Table 1 = Accounts Field1 = AccountID Field2 = AccountName Table 1 will have Account named entered manually. There are not many, 6 accounts. Table 2 = Opportunity Field 1 = OpportunityID Field 2 = AccountName - This will come from the import Field 3 = AccountID Table 2 will have weekly imported opportunity data. With the imported data comes the AccountName. Hi, All I' trying to implement a solution that manages Insurance Contracts that are considered as Proposition at a first stage. The number of insurances choice is 6. Every unique choice generates a proposition that will be sent to the client for approval. Now , I have a portal showing the Insurances id and Name in a drop down list of the 6 choices. What I would like is : Once a choice is made, not to be able to add a second choice or modify the choice, that was entered in the Portal, in the first place. Hi guys, I have created a CRM in which I have implemented a portal to add a checklist for things that need to be done for each customer. I have a Customers table, and an Actions table, which are related via the Customer ID field. In the Actions table I have fields: Action ID (serial), Customer ID, Description and Completed. The Completed field I have set as a checkbox to say 'Completed'. I want to be able to filter this portal to show 3 different options: All, Uncompleted and Completed. I want to display a value list that is sorted by year, then name, of the records. The list should pull it's data for both fields from a table, one field being a PK, the other being the name. Most solutions I've seen are quite restrictive as they require the use of one of the two fields for the purpose of sorting, but I need both fields. The only trick I can think of is numbering the PK relative to where an item should appear in the value list, but I see this as more of a kludge than anything any would like to avoid it.

In previous versions of Filemaker, you could use the ctrl and up-arrow and crtl and down-arrow keys to go to the previous or next records. These keys worked whether or not the status area is visible on both Mac and PC. In FMP 11 it seems that these keystroke combinations only work if the status bar is visible. Hide the status bar and they no longer work. Is anyone else seeing this? FWIW I'm using FMP 11.0v2 Advanced on Windows 7 Professional, 32-bit version Thanks Brian

We recently install a new windows 7 machine. We use the web viewer in FM10 to pull phone number and address information from a phone book website. It works fine on the XP machines but will not display on the Windows 7 machine. The script is designed to open a new window and then go to a layout where the web viewer is set up. The script will open the new window but will not transition to the layout containing the web viewer. We also have a url script that opens our website and uploads information into a form. Works with XP but not Windows 7. I'm hoping there is some security setting with 7 for accessing the web via a program that can be changed to correct the problem. If s…

A button that contains text calls a script that sets a global variable ($$MultiAssign) "True" or "False" based on the current state. I want the buttons fill color to change, based on the state of the global variable. The initial format of the button is black text with a red fill. I've set a Conditional Format Formula $$MultiAssign="True" to change the fill color to green. I have verified the state of the variable in the Debugger, however the button color does not change :! Hi, Apologies if I've posted this in the wrong section, this seemed the appropriate place. I'm having some problems or at least I can't think of a proper solution to my dilemma. In my solution one of the primary purposes is to allow the user to enter in the necessary data and have it print in a preset template (of their selection). I have most of the templates set up and working just great thanks to the Virtual List Technique. I am working in Filemaker 11 Advanced. I have a layout from which I then pop up another layout for some information to be edited (for a form of report) - Except when the layout pops up and I try to edit the record I get the following message: 'This record cannot be modified in this window because it is already being modified in a different window.' I hasten to add that the window which the new layout is launched is closed as part of the script and only reopened when the editing in the new pop up layout is completed (the users click a button) so the message is just wrong! I am trying to highlight a record in a portal where the portal record ID (departmentsFL::ID) = an ID in a global field list (VIEWER_vwr::highlight_g). The IDs are alpha-numeric. I used this: PatternCount ( VIEWER_vwr::highlight_g ; departmentsFL::ID ) This is flawed because the ID DEP1 and DEP11 are both true for PatternCount(). In the solution there are three tables, Expenses, ExpenseCalculation(Main Layout), and ExpenseLine. I have created a field that uses a value list that collects data from the tables expenses. This data is then stored as a record in ExpenseLine which is reflected on a portal in ExpenseCalculation Layout. I have been able to catch the value of each expense, but not the name of the expense to pass onto the portal. Any clues? Alberto

Friends, I'm new to FM and I have searched like mad, but it's hard when you don't really know what to search on. I have a table called 'ingredients'. There fields 'ingredientName', 'purchaseQty', 'purchaseAmt', and 'costUnit' (and about 10 more) I am trying to find a way to have a screen that would list all the values from the 'ingredientname' in something that looks like a portal with a vertical scrollbar, and when an ingredient is selected, the other fields would populate to the right. Ok, I've tried to create the relationship that allows data to be entered via a relationship from my BASIC PO INFORMATION table to my APPROVALS table, I created a key id in each table and matched them up and nothing seems to be working, PLEASE HELP. Anyone know how to create a filtered value list that excludes values that have already been selected? Here's the context... A Meeting TOG includes Attendees and People, as shown in screenshot. The Meeting layout has a portal to the Attendees, and the portal contains a popup of People. I'd like the popup to show all the People records, except those that are already in the portal. (I'm sure this topic has been covered but I just can't find it in the forum with the phrasing I've been using.) I'm trying to follow the Good Practice example of having a separate table store Value List choices but I'm stumped how to set up the TO so multiple tables share the same list, i.e., Table1, Table2, and Table3 each have their own City text field but I want them all to share the same list to draw city choices (from the table, ValueList.) Hello, I have written a lot of scripts in filemaker that use the Show Custom Dialog option. Is there a way to change the position of these dialog boxes? instead of them popping up in the middle I want them to appear on the left. Looking for some layout inspiration, and am rather new to FM. I have a company-centric file that has multiple contacts and multiple addresses associated with it via TOs. I have a layout called 'Customer Management' that will allow the user to add, view, and modify company details. I was thinking of using tab control to switch views to contacts and addresses for the specific company. However, using a portal just gives me a table form view of the respective contacts or addresses. I'd prefer to make this a little more UI friendly. Can't figure out what is happening. I have a value list with values A, B, and C. The field definition in the table says this field is always validated and the values must come from the value list. The entry field on the screen says it come from a drop down list based on the same value list. When the user clicks in that field, the three choices appear as they should. If the user initially clicks on B, the field is filled in with A. If the user initially clicks on C, the field is filled in with B. I've got a layout where there's room for a block of text (a concatenated mailing address), the length of which varies from record to record. This particular layout would be aesthetically "cleaner" if the last (bottom-most) line of the text rested just above a row of tabs which runs across the layout. Is there a simple way to do this, analogous to the vertical alignment of text in the cells of a table? Thanks!

I create a layout and while in layout it all looks fine. But when I go into browse mode some of the items shift and some shapes get wider. I am using FMPRO 9. Someone told me about an inspector button under the layout bar but i cannot find that anywhere. Also does anyone know how to upgrade filemaker 9? It always tells me there is a neewer version of 9 but when i go to upgrade it it just takes me to the FM website and offers me FM 11 to buy. Thanks! Erik

From a table called"floor" I need to be able to have a drop down value list that shows the remaining spots available to claim. The other table called "spots" has a fixed number of records that are numbered 1 through 36. As the spots are selected from "floor" I have two calculation fields, one changes a yes to no once the spot is claimed. The other replaces the spot number with a "". The focus is how pages appear when they are printed, and because the information in the database varies so much, people are constantly required to change font sizes and sometimes field positions. I am using Filemaker 11 advanced on Windows XP. I have a layout on which I have created a chart. I add a button, go through the button set up process and then find a have a button almost as high as the layout body. When I try to change the height of the button is bounces back to the same size. I can change the width. The anchors for the object are the default, top and left. I tried deleting the chart and re-creating the button to see if the cause was there but got the same behaviour. I have searched exhaustively to find the answer and now feel it must be so simple I just can't see it. Simply have a web viewer on a layout. Want to print the page. On Macs right clicking shows no printing option. Right clicking in Windows Vista it shows perfectly and prints perfectly. Can I not print a web viewer page on the Mac in Filemaker Pro 9, 10 or 11? If it is possible through a plug in or scripting then would appreciate someone giving some info. What am I missing here? I have very successfully converted my Filemaker 5.5 marina management solution from .fp5 to .fp7 files using Filemaker 10 Advanced and Windows XP SP3. A lot of work, but well worth the effort considering all the new available features and benefits. Couple of things I don't understand about FP10 that I would hope someone could clarify for me. Hi. I have an issue where I have a portal with alternative line fill shading (two different greys), and that portal sits on top of a tab control, withing a tab control - also different shades of grey. The screen background color is a very dark blue. In the portal, where fields are set as transparent, the field changes to the screen background color when being edited. I would have thought that the color in the field would be taken from the grey tab control immediately behind it. Why is it going "all the way back"? I cant set the field's background color to grey as I have the alternative line fill option set. Can anybody please tell me the "rules" behind fields …

Hi, not sure if this is possible but would greatly appreciate any ideas... My records have a TIME field. I want to be able to sort on this field, BUT, want to have a START time which the user can select. This would determine where the Sort would begin from. For exmaple, with the following 5 times: 03:00, 06:00, 09:00, 22:00, 23:00 a standard sort gives: 03:00, 06:00, 09:00, 22:00, 23:00 but if the users decided that the Day Starts at 08:00, then the sort would return: 09:00, 22:00, 23:00, 03:00, 06:00 so it is kind of rolling sort. Any ideas how I can go about this?

Hi, I have a text block with lines containing merge fields <> <> <> <> The documentation states You can insert punctuation, spaces, line breaks, and text between merge fields as needed. If I put spaces they shrink as they should, However if I put a tab stop between the items on each line they no longer shrink. Is there a solution to this? Thanks, jim

I'm currently developing a system for our company right now and looking for some input. The part I'm doing right now is the usual Company/Contact entry layouts. We generally deal with a specific person at a specific company, but we have to have the flexibility to set up multiple and default name/addresses as we often ship to different addresses/people under the company name. Hello experts, Using FM10 I have made a "list" type layout. It shows all the records in my database. I would like it to only show certain records - records where the field DISPATCH_DATE has a null value. I am aware I can do this with an omit request, but I don't want the user to have to do this every time they access this layout. Is there a way to only show records with no DISPATCH_DATE? My Setup: Orders layout based on Orders table. Portal on orders layout based on OrderLines table. OrderLines table stores fields: OrderLineID, ItemID, Price. Item table stores fields: ItemID, ItemName. If each orderline in the portal displays only the OrderLineID and the ItemID (both fields in the orderlines table). This works well and is fast. For Credit Card Authorization forms I have to provide an image of the front and back of the card, the cardholders Drivers License and their signature. I have designed a printable layout for this. As of now, I have the images stored as Container Fields in a CCInfo table. This table also contains such info as the CC# and other related text files. My problem is that every time one of my employees sends a CCA, they are having to manually insert the container images from the hard drive onto the layout. I have an Orders Table and a Suppliers Table. Each supplier has a distinct number, so that when I enter the number on the Orders Layout, it uses a Lookup to populate the fields with the supplier's name, address, etc. When I can't remember the supplier's number I have to switch to the Suppliers Table and look up the number, then switch back to the Orders Layout and enter it. I have a relationship set up between tables 1 and 2, whereby a value list is populated by records from table 2. All the value list items are in a Text format such as: ST-***-###. the astrixes are always 3 letters, and the Hash's are always numbers. I am trying to populate the value list with ONLY items that start with say: ST-VUL-###, but have been unable to do this.
