While I was looking for something else I stumbled across a feature I did not know existed and I want to verify that I am reading this right. If I am...I will be so happy. In the Copy DataBase Schema in FMP 8 Advanced it says that I can copy/import an entire table into a new database. OK, that seems pretty straight forward...Does that mean that I can take a DB that was developed in FM6 that was 9 individual tables and turn it into 1 file? If the answer is "yes" that is a big hooray...But would the scripts that call and move across/through (what were) external tables still work if everything is now inside one "master" file? Furthermore, and what prompted al…

When I roll out the other solution, I will update the first to include a button that take you to the next, but only if your are registered for the second, otherwise it will pop up a message asking if you'd like to purchase and download the new one. So.. when you purchase and download the new module, i want it to update the field the script uses to verify registration so that clicking the button will then take you to the new module. Having said all of that, i am currently not using a serial number for registration. I would like to do …

I guess this is more of a complaint or a "why is it so?" than a discussion, but why doesn't script debugger work on non-full access passwords? It would seem that it would be equally, if not more, valuable to be able to run it on limited access passwords so that one could find where they run into premission problems. I was hoping that Run with Full Premissions would take care of that, but it does not... Also, why can't you modify a script if you have script modify permission (but not full access) and the script is set to run with full priviledges??

Could someone confirm what happens with the database when you use "Recover File[]" and "Perform Without Dialog" in a Runtime? Am I correct that in the *NON* Runtime, it creates a new file and adds "Recovered" to the end of the recovered file which is in fact the recovered file, however, through the Runtime it creates a new file and adds "Old" to the end of the file name which is in fact the original file recovered and the recovered file is now the named the same as the original file?

When a condition is met (new material downloaded from XML source in this case, but that is not important) I would like the FileMaker runtime to become the front application or send some sort of notice to the user who will be working on a different application (email, web surfing, etc) with the Runtime minimized or in the background. Is there a way to do this?

  10. I've tried to find a solution and must not be searching for the correct terms. My boss wants a statistical report that gives him an idea of how many people are renewing their software subscription and how long they go without renewing. I've created a field called Expired Status (text) that puts each customer into the proper category. I know how to get the totals if I use subsummaries sorted by the different categories. But the format isn't conducive to taking it to the next level that he wants. He wants a bar graph of the numbers for each product and for the totals. This report that I've made to get the numbers isn't something that can easily be copied and paste…

  12. Hi I would like to know of a technique in Filemaker that will let me achieve “data amendments on grouped data”. An example might better illustrate what I mean. Consider a table with three fields – mydate, mynumber and mytext. I would like to run a script that would process the data to group the above fields together (sorted by mydate) formatted in a manner similar to the example below with the important proviso that I can then amend the data. Basically, if I could enter data using the columnar list/report with grouped data then that would be ideal, unfortunately this technique seems to be display only (it works in preview mode). Once compiled to the runtime version it can no longer open any xls file even the file that was used to develope it. No "Error" is reported, simply a message stating that the file "abc.xls" can't be opened. I suspect that I'm not including something in the Developer Tool process but thus far I can't identify the culprit. (The same file still works fine in the programming environment). In the 10.3.9 version it didn't show any graphic, so we put a drop down menu on the related field, but no menu dropped down - i then tried a radio button, but they couldn't click into it. It is quite frustrating that I can not distribute a multi-user runtime solution without forcing my customers to purchase "full" licenses of FileMaker for each workstation. FileMaker's current pricing structure seems greedy and outdated. It greatly limits the market potential for FileMaker developers and it prevents FileMaker developers from aggressively marketing their solutions against competing alternatives. FileMaker needs to offer a new pricing structure for developers that want to distribute networked solutions. They could easily do this by offering a special version of their client that could be networked but is limited to running "only" runtime solution…

Hi everyone In kiosk mode my startup file opens 3 files after the initial screen. My problem is that while opening these files there are windows popping up every which where before they settle down into the required size and position. This is not a major problem but neither is it pretty. Does anyone know of a way of opening these files in a more professional looking way. I have spent a few hours trying different approaches none of which give me a satisfactory look If anyone out there has an answer for this I would appreciate the advice TIA Phil

Background. My customer is a franchiser. Franchisees print three lines on pre-printed certificates. The certificates can be printed for a number of their customers. My script prints one certificate with Print [with dialog] and then does the rest with Print [no dialog]. The Print Setup step is the same in both cases. Problem. One franchisee has the second and subsequent certificates printing upside down. No other franchisee has the problem. The Printer is an HP 2610, which has a 180-degree rotate option. Solution. ??????? My guess is that some innocuous setting in my Print step translates to 'Rotate' on the HP. Anu suggestions? I am gong to try to insta…

  66. ;) I have been trying to print on an LX 300+ printer from File Maker 5.5 Windows. The printed document comes out huge. Looking for an answer I found that I should do the following: "If the printer is in the IBM emulation, try selecting the IBM Proprinter driver. If the printer is in the Epson emulation, try selecting the Epson FX 286 driver in Windows." This works but the printer works much slower than normal. Is there a way of printing in this printer in a normal speed?

This is a bit of a long story; pls bear with me bcs I need advice and I want to be sure I've explained the entire set of requirements before you, hopefully, offer your opinion. The system I'm developing for commericial distribution has a specific requirement: the ability to reprint reports anytime and have the content be identical to the first printout. Before a user prints a report, they are presented with a "report configuration" screen that lets them assemble what to include/exclude from the report's content. So, recreating this same report in the future would require not only saving copies of the data as of report date, but also these config settings. Enter Save …

I'm upgrading a 10 year old application with 29 interlinked databases, 160 relationships, 330 layouts, 190 value lists, 625 scripts and over 1000 fields to FM Pro 8.3 and I want to take the opportunity to do a major Spring Cleaning before I activate the new version. After fighting through the file references cleanup / relationship restoration phase (some file references were 8-9 years out of date), I tried the DDR. Whoops, it doesn't generate a DB like the one in 6, so I tried the html version first. Nice, lots of info, lousy for what I needed - 29 separate html files - one of which was going to be 479 printed pages. Kinda useless for a quick look up such as finding …

In a Windows runtime (Dev 6), I have a script which exports a small text file then e-mails it to us as an attachment using a plug-in. Works great except in rare cases where a user's corporate IT dept has the machine locked down tight. In these cases the user has to dig the file out and send it using their regular mail application. I'd like to make it easier for the user to locate the file by getting it to the desktop without any additional interaction. If I were to script this to save to the desktop, should that work? Do I have to worry about all the possible drive variations or on a PC is the "Desktop" the uppermost level in the file hierarchy?

I think I am going crazy. I opened files from my v6 solution with v8, let 8 do the file translation. Then 8 wanted passwords for files that never had passwords. These are very old solutions so I wondered if I had 'Try PW' set and just forgot about it. Nope. And when I look at the passwords in 6, there are none assigned to the files. I am not making this up -) Is this an issue that anyone ever heard of- files updated to v8 from v6 suddenly requiring a pw- or is this a case of operator error? I am totally flummoxed by this. Hello All Has anybody found a way to detect the dreaded lack of SP2 on Windows? I have a runtime application which I'm obliged to distribute with warning messages about the erratic behaviour when SP2 is absent from their system. If Filemaker could detect the presence of SP2, a startup script could be included to warn users of the problem. The runtime simply refusing to run would be preferable to it running with errors! My last nightmare on a Windows SP1 machine was when runtime suddenly decided that the keyboard was AZERTY making it impossible to input data! Shouldn't this function be automatically included by Filemaker when it generates runtimes? The fact…

  80. I haven't been able to find a satisfactory discussion of this issue -- I'm working on translating several field contents into several languages. I'd like to set the "Enlarge window contents to improve readability" preference in a runtime. Unless I'm missing something, there's no way to script this, nor is there a way to specify it when building the runtime. I'm omitting Edit/Preferences... from my custom menus. So the only way I can see to accomplish this is: 1. Hide a button somewhere that calls "Open Preferences". 2. Build the runtime. 3. Open the runtime and hit the button; then select the "Enlarge..." setting. 4. Distribute the runtime to users. Is there no better way?

Is there any way to have that database hosted on the web so users would always have the latest content available or would that be impossible because runtimes are single user? Oops! Actually, right at the start, there is a vertical scroll bar over where it should be on a full screen but it disappears when it is clicked. It looks as though the app is full screen but with the particular window half size. I have tried maximising the window but to no avail. At no stage in the development h…

When a user looks at details of a child record from a portal in the parent, I use a GTRR to display the record for that portal row. When adding new child records, there is just the one new record visible. In either case, there is no way the user can navigate to other records - until V8! Can unused dictionaries be removed from the FileMaker Pro program directory itself before building a runtime, so that they don't show up in the resulting runtime file set at all?
