I understand you can block a individual field in a record in the table field outline. But, can you leave it open in the table outling and block minipulation in the layout to protect the information in normal data entry, but have it open to editing or adding to in another field? Thanks The Tramp

Not sure if this is the right location for this question, but here goes. I am not sure when FileMaker made the change, but it is starting to cause some problems for me. If a user is in a field and selects another window, that record is still active, which locks the record from being changed by others users. Before, when you changed windows, the field/record was exited. Is there a way to change it to exit the field/record when another window is selected? Using FM 8.5/9 on Mac OSX. I have a Dymo 400 with 99012 labels and am trying to create a layout so that I can print out labels from my database. I have tried using both creating a new layout and choosing labels and also just creating a box and moving it around until it happens to line up. Has anyone had any experience successfully getting labels out. Any help would be appreciated

I am using Filemaker 9 and 7 I need to display a number in scientific notation to one decimal place For example, if I create two number fields, A and B and a calculation field A:B ratio, and: Field A = 1 Field B = 654321 A:B Ratio = 0.000001528301858 I want the A:B ratio to display as 1.5e-6 If I use “General format” for the ratio field, it displays 1.528301858e-6 Is there a way to truncate the number of decimals in the display of the calculated result? I am in need of creating a report which summarizes Test scores by Job (not by person). Each person does a particular job and is tested for it. Those people pass the "job test" by a Weak, Moderate, or Strong amount. There are ranges for that which are calculated and I am getting those to work just fine. The problem is, I cannot print a report that shows this by Job. When I choose a sub-summary by Job, I get EACH person's score. I want to just show the total for each job i.e. Total Weak, Total Moderate, and Total strong. I have "total" fields created however it displays multiple times. First, let me apologize if I've chosen the wrong forum to list this under. Those in the know will probably move it soon...thank you for that. I checked the knowledge base first and nothing came up for Xerces Panic Error. Here's the problem. I'm having trouble copying portions of one layout to another. When I highlight what I want to copy and press Ctrl+c or the Copy button at the top of the window, I get the following error: [color:red]Xerces Panic Error...Could not load a transcoding service. I am having an issue with Layouts that I don't understand. Lets say you have just finished entering a new record with all the data in the tabs as well. You go to hit the "New Record" button and accidently hit the "Duplicat Record" button instead. So needless to say you hit the "Delete Record" button. Well, when you delete the new duplicate record it also delets the origional file and all the data in the underlying related tables as well. Why, and How do you stop it. I can logicly explain why it would delete underlying related records but why would it jump to another record by the same ID number and delete it as well. Thanks The Tramp

Hey Forum, this is ridicoulous...I cant get my bottom margin to work right. I have a brandnew layout and am testing printing "to the bottom of an A4 page". I put one big Text item on the layout filled with "test test test " about 10000 of them. All in all it goes over the bottom of the page onto the next page (561x904 pixels just for info). I then print page 1. The Margin it leaves at the bottom is EXACTLY 21mm. Thats much to much for what I want. But I have an example of an old old old FM Printout clearly showing that a margin of just 10mm was achived a long time back. In Printsetup I correctly choose A4 Format. I have tried to play…

I have a layout with check entry record fields in the top section and check distribution record fields in the bottom section. The purpose of this form is to enter check entry information and the 1st check distribution information. The two records are joined by a relationship. Entry in the layout is fine except that the dropdowns fail to populate their respective name fields the check entry record (see next paragraph). They work fine in the check distribution section. I have an invoicing solution and need to put a summary of all outstanding balances on the invoice layout that I send to the client. I send the invoices out monthly and do a find to print all the current invoices for that month. The problem is that when i do that find, it doesn't let me show a summary of each clients outstanding balances. Only shows for the current month. Thanks

I created a layout and then later went back and moved some fields around. Now when a user is in the data entry form and uses tab,enter or return to go to the next field, Filemaker goes to the field that was originally in that same place but is now in a different spot on the layout. Do I have to re-create the layout and add the fields in the order that I want them to be tabbed to?? There has got to be a way to avoid this and set the go to next field in Field Behavior to what you want... Any info is greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Order entry description, on occasion, can be really long. Our products are remanufactured, and sometimes the description of what is being sold is, well, a short novel. How can I conditionally display, say, on an invoice, the detail behind the line item? Most line items are under 30 characters, and fit fine, but the occasional one either needs to support a really long description, or the attachment of a descriptive note. The other alternative, which poses a similar problem, is the invoicing of the top line of a bill of materials, with the bill of materials displayed below it. Hi I'm working with multiple tables in one filemaker file. I have different layouts for the different tables, and sometimes need to have two windows open at a time, reflecting different tables. Is there a way to assign a windowname to a layout? The scripts I've created for navigation depend on the windowname, and being able to assign a windowname to a specific layout at all times reduces the risk of error for my scripts. Thank you!

I have a Database that does calculations and displays data for a report. I have a script that does a "Delete all Records" at the beginning so the old report is cleared out, and re-imports data for the new reporting procedure. The problem is that even if there are no records, my Layout is still reporting values in some variables just before I import data. Most reports do not use all the Display variables I have so these "no data" values are still showed. Is there anyway (other than a script step that sets all these fields with nulls and zeros. And I'm not sure that will work anyway because there are no records in the DB when I need to set values) to do th…

Is it possible to have the header not move in a database when in form mode? Similar to how frames work in a webpage, if you scroll down the body, is it possible for the header to just stay put and not scroll down as well? I need to archive a lot of paper documents in manila envelopes. I would like to include some information about each project on a mailing label and affix the label to the envelope. I've tried this a couple of times in the past without success. I can't remember what the meltdown was but I recall it had something to do with the particular Avery label I was trying to use. Before I go to the office supply store in search of new labels, can anybody recommend a particular label that's about the size of a business card. I'm adding a Flight Tracking Module to my Event Planning Database. No problem building the relational tables for tracking multiple flights or anything like that. The only problem I am having is with the Flight Tracking Report I'm building. The summary/sub summary report is sorted first by Home Gateway, then by Arrival-Departure Pattern, with the body containing delegate information (of not all the sorting functions and that output is working flawlessly). Hi All. Please bear with me as i try to explain this! I have a report layout that I need to create that will replace a paper form currently in use. The form allows for the inputting of several fields for an invoice. The fields are repeated 4 times on the form to allow for 4 invoices. I have my database created to where the invoices show up on the recreated form in the database, but the fields only show up for the related invoice records. For instance if there are two invoices, you will see the fields for both, but the form will not show the blank fields for two more invoices. I also have a portal item that allows user to enter many records associated with the text box I just described. I am new and seem to be having problems with layout I want to create layouts that relate to each other such as writing letters or forms that use the same fields such as persons name and address but when I enter a new layout it ask that I enter a new record and does not carry the persons name and address over to the new layout. This is so weird! I have a database that has about 3000 names. Every time I have a layout with a merging "first name" field, all the names turn out to be fine except one "Elizabeth" is always in a smaller font than the rest. I tried erasing and retyping the name but did not work. Any ideas? Thanks!

GetLayoutObjectAttribute("blue_box";"bounds") returns the bounds of a manually drawn square named "blue_box" (e.g. 99 82 919 182 0). But how do I alter these bounds, for example with data out of 5 number fields. I am working on a layout that I would like to prohibit editing to, once signed. What I'd like happen is the following: When a new record is created, its status is defaulted to "Open". Then, when a user presses a button to sign the record, etc, the status changes to "Signed" via a script. Thereafter, the record has view-only access. Could anyone suggest an easy way of doing this?

Does Sliding work when the layout objects in question are located in a Sub Summary Part? I have a field that I want to expand based on the amount of text entered but it does not seem to work. I have a leading grand summary in a layout that shows standard fields (not summary) from a related table. In the Leading Grand Summary only half of the fields are editable for some reason? Ex: the fields in the lower half of the LGS are editable and the fields in the upper half are not? All records come from the same related table, and have a one to many relationship. All fields have the same perm, and are editable in browse and find mode, there is nothing layered over them. I have rebuilt the layout 3 times and get the same thing every time? Hello, I have a layout that has many custom dialog boxes. Is it possible to have a scroll bar included in a dialog box to accommodate various amounts of text or simply format the box so all of the text is in view without manually resizing the box on the lower right to show all text? I designed a runtime application with Filemaker Developer 7.0 and noticed several dialog boxes had the text cut off at the bottom, I had to resize the dialog box manually. I have a series of 7 duplicated layouts, the first of which shows 1 pixel shift of all field and text when moving from layout number 1 to any of the other 7. If I check the fields and text with "object info," the numeric referents are exactly the same. If I use the T-square, the pixel shift is apparent. I can't figure out what makes this happen. I'm having trouble getting the Grand Summary section to give the correct amount on this layout. I keep getting zeros for Summaries based on a parent related fields. The layout below is showing records from the TicketItems table, Item lines are the body. The subsummary section is based on sorting by TicketID. TotalCost is a Summary of Cost, but Haulchrg, Surchrg, and Total exist only on the Ticket because they only apply to the Ticket. I want to print an addressbook for my filofax, pages are 3 3/4 by 6 3/4. I want each letter to be a different page so I can use the letter dividers. I know I will need to do some sort of letter sort, but don't know how. Hello Board! Thank you for all your advice so far! I am trying to build a very simple data-capture program that is only 3 fields. However, i would like to use a touch-screen monitor and remove the keyboard. Is there a way for me to build a 1-9/0 keypad on the screen, so when i touch the buttons the numbers come up into a specified field? I would like to publish this on the web and serve it through an intranet and i'd rather not use the OS built in 'on screen keyboard'. A nice and simple 1-9 pad is all that is required. Hello, I have a container field that holds a pdf file (reciept/invoice) for my expense record. The db will be published to the web. Currently, when the user opens the pdf file a copy is saved to the user's desk top. Is that the only way a user can open the file? If it's saved to the desktop? The user's desktop will become swamped with pdf files. I just hope there is another way. Please advise!

Hi everyone, I wasn't sure where to post this so here goes. I have a solution that tracks jobs. My field people enter information about functions that have been completed and what is left. It also tracks revenue and cost. My problem is that my boss needs to view what he calls a dashboard where he can see a list of all the jobs, what has been done and what is left with all costs and revenue. This means a layout with hundreds of jobs and with the exception of the job number, every field is either a calculation or summary of all the individual functions. It is unbearably slow! I need access to currently open window names to script in closing certain specific windows. I can make the WindowName function work in two ways, neither of which matches what I read (and what I need) as described in the help file. I should be able to have it display only currently open windows. Formula 1 (see attachment 1) shows one open window (Story Builder - yellow background) when in fact there are three windows open. Has anyone else come across this bug with which involves Headers Pop-Up Menus and Table Views? It is basically a redraw issue, but the pop up menu seems to move, because when I click there it doesn't respond. ( See attached image... I have a container field that gets populated via a script using the 'Insert File' script step. The file gets placed properly, but, I can not open it from the container field. I thought you could click/double click the field and open the file. Also, can't you use a variable to place the file. I tried that as well and I get a box to highlight the file instead. Hi All I am still a complete beginner, so I expect this is a fairly simple problem. I have a drop-down menu with options "beef", "pork", "salad", "fruit" and a radio button set with options "meat", "vegetarian". If the user selects "beef" or "pork" from the drop-down menu, I'd like the radio button "meat" to be automatically selected. Layout A is to show hours per job (from Database A) and revenue per job (from related Database B)summarized by employee. Summaries work fine for hours but only show last entry for the revenue from the related data base for each employee...FM8.0

Hey all, not sure if this is the correct forum for asking this but i figured since this is all about building layouts it might be the place. I am very interested in buying a wacom tablet for my office. I am not the graphic artist or anything. I am simply looking for a way to sketch out and layout graphics quickly and easily. And since I use my mouse with my right hand, but i am left-handed at writing, I could easily use both at the same time. Does anyone know how handy (no pun intended!) wacom tablets are with making layouts in filemaker pro? Is it worth my time? What models would you recommend? Thanks All! - Mike

This is an extreme newbie question: I'm making a simple database for my home library and was wondering how to create a field consisting of a checkbox that would place a webding or Zapf dingbat type checkmark within the box when clicked by the user. Checking the box would indicate that a book had been read. I would then add the pages of the book in that record to a grand total of pages read for all books in the database. Hello. I'm using FM 8.5 on Windows. I've inserted a leading sub-summary in a report and I can see it in Browse mode but it doesn't appear in Preview mode. Also, the page breaks don't work. Why is that? Details: I have an Artists table and Artwork table. An artist can have multiple artworks. I want to print a catalog that shows all the artwork for each artist, and do a page break between each artist. I've tried both leading and trailing sub-summaries (on the Artist ID field) but neither one shows the Artist fields that I place in the section, and the page breaks don't work. I realise I am being really stupid here but.... I have a form layout based on a table and a list layout based on the same table. One of the fields is the staff assigned to this record. These staff names are the same as the account names used when logging into filemaker. I have created a button to go from the form layout to the list layout but I only want the user to see their own records. So the script on the button does the following things: 1. Hi, I've just started using Filemaker and have modified the starter-kit business kit to suit my needs. I now have sales invoice totals, dates and invoice ref. numbers going back to 2001 for 500 customers. I would like to show the annual sales totals for each customer and for each year on a new layout tab but I can't see how to extract this information into a calculation or summary field. Can anybody give me some clues on how to proceed? :)

Hi, I was on YouTube tonight and just for giggles I typed in Filemaker and there was a video for a company. I noticed that in the main title bar of the FM program (not the open layout window) there was the company name…I did a search on Google for the company and they had a demo of the program and I downloaded it. Now in the download not only is there a company name but a company icon. Hi there I have a large database with in excess of 70 layouts. When I go to select a layout there is only one column shown with the necessity to scroll down to find the required layout, especially as the last one generated sits at the bottom. I know it is possible to re-order these but it seems that the one that I want is always off the page. Is there any way in which the layouts can be made to display over more than one column. Thanks

Ok, Need to create a layout that similar as to what is in the attachment. The problem is that I would like to show records from two different sources in the body. The body would have three fields from each table. What I am running into is that it seems that if there are 5 records from table 1 and 10 records from table 2, it only shows 5 records from each. Morning All, Long time reader - 1st time poster! We're sending out a lot of thank you letters which detail the kind of package a customer has signed up for. These have been set up as 'merge' letters which take the address, name, date etc from the database - all is working fine. Hi, I'm fairly new at this ball game. I'm running a database from a Mac os X.3 system, with 5 client machines all on various versions of os X. I have about 26,000 records on the database, most of which contain a graphic. A few days ago Filemaker 7 Pro started to crash whenever I added a new image to a record and I cannot understand why. I thought it may be the hard drive on the server, but there is plenty of room on it. Thoughts? It'd help me muchly.

I have a text report layout in which the length of the text varies from report to report. The length of the report is long enough to accommodate my estimate of the longest possible report. I have set slide up and shorten size of field, however, it still prints blank report pages at the end. Is there anyway to eliminate extra pages? Does the fact that there is a header and footer force the pages to print?

Problem with Sales Report I have a report by Sales Rep generated by a script with GTRR from Sales Rep table to Sales table. My problem arises when a Sales Rep didn't generate any sales in the month. There is no sales records in the Sales table therefore his name does not appear in the Report (it's a columnar report sorted by Sales Rep with subsummary). Is there a way to show a Parent record (Sales Rep Name) in the report although it has no related record (no sales).

I currently have a layout for printing letters, now I'd like to print all records in a current foundset, but if I select this in my printer properties, the body contains all letters continuous (without a page break), even if I add a page break in the body (part setup), it still does the same. In my layout I have a header, body and initial summary. Does anyone know how to do this please?

Ok , here goes.. I have a database with a product table (which holds retail price, description ect) and a Sales invoice table. I have a field in Sales invoice called 'confirmed discount' which the user enters an amount. What are the odds of this: I am creating a layout for labels, and in the "Specify Label Layout" dialog, it asks for the specific label size code of the labels I have purchased, in orderto automatically generate the correct measurements. I've got a script that creates printed reports from multiple database tables. What I am attempting to do is to produce sequential page numbering so that the first page of the first report is 1 and if that report is 3 pages long, the first page of the second report would be 4 and so on. I've tried the Global variable suggestion that was posted for the Page x of xx solution but it isn't working. Hello All! I have a bit of an issue I can't recall when it started but it bugs the crap out of me! After YEARS of agonizing pain dealing with windows 2000. We FINALLY got new computers (rebuilt) with fresh clean copies of windows XP pro. My computer is running a Pentium 4 2.8ghz processor (32bit) with 2gigs of ram. Recently I changed the graphic (gif) for several buttons. Normally, there is no problem. But when I downloaded the changes to my client on their PC the button displays a message that the graphic is missing and they see the button blank with that message displayed. The buttons work fine, but this has never happened before. The only buttons affected are the ones I changed in that day. I have made many changes before but this has never happened. Hi, I'm building a solution that has a primarily dark background, with light-colored text (yellow, white etc.). When I enter an edit field or pop-up menu to make changes or make a selection, the background reverts to white, which is a crazy difficult color to edit white text against... Hello, I've posted here before but the answers I got made me realize that I am too much of a novice to screw around with trying to put 4 different tables that I have (Clients, Invoices, Appointments and Daytimer) in the same table. I am new to FMP, so my first project was a little frightening lol. I am an amatuer magician and decided to make a database for the effects I know and study - and approach it as a FMP project as if I were designing it for someone else. I was wondering if anyone would be willing to take a quick look at it and see if there are areas where I did things blatantly wrong, or violated any "unspoken rules of fmp"?
