Good day, need some guidance. I have a Field: "Document Type" Options: "Picking Slip" or "Transfer" Then I placed another instance on the "Document Type" field, I configured the hide object on the second instance to only show if a selection was made on the instance. Then, I configured the hide object on the first instance to show only if there is no selection. My issue is that I can't get the first instance to hide once a selection is made. I have tried "isempty" and "not isempty" with the field name and with the "self" keyword. What am I doing wrong? FYI... The idea is that once a user makes a document type selection, they can …

We have a report that is a two-column report. The number of items varies on each column, due to the sub-summary breaks. Some groups of items have one or two items, some have many, etc. The person we're designing it for would like the sub-summary heading to print at the top of the RIGHT column when the group continues from the bottom left column. We've been trying all the solutions we can find so far, but nothing wants to work. Has anyone done this, or are there any "hidden" flags that we can possibly trigger somehow to get that header to print on the right side in this condition? Thanks.

Hello, I am using Filemaker Pro 20 but I’m really a beginner. I’ve made a simple flat file movie database, just to experiment with. Some of the fields have yes/no checkboxes. No problems with them. One field (named “RANGE”) is a checkbox group with four options. Those values are: 250, 500, 1000, and 2000. When I generated a report, I noticed the Range field wasn’t displaying all of the values. I widened the box and saw the values were vertical. I wanted them horizontal. I did some research using AI and found a formula to create a calculated field with the Substitute formula. I have been using the excellent VirtualSort by @jbante for years and it functions very well, but sorting on an unstored calc is, as we know, inherently slow on hosted solutions with many records. I was wondering if someone has conjured up a new method for dynamic portal sorting that is significantly faster considering that 10 years have passed. I also wonder how the 'Server sorting' in Server 19 and later affects sorting on unstored calcs, as I read somewhere that it apparently does not work. Cheers, Andreas

Is it possible to use TextStyleAdd, or any stock function, really, to change the text weight in more than 2 steps (plain, bold)? I have a font that has "light" weight, then "regular" weight, "semibold" and so on. In CSS those are usually represented by a number that goes from 100 onwards allowing for precise control over weights. However I could find nothing of the sort in FileMaker. In fact, supplying "Plain" to TextStyleAdd fails to assign "regular" (bolder) weight to a text box which has "light" weight assigned in the layout. Is there a simple way to work around that?

Hello, I have a layout that displays a homeowner inspection report. The first page should show a header (name, address, comments, etc. and two of a possible 8 photos of the home. The second page should show the subsequent 6 of a possible 8. I set the layout up with a Sub-summary by Lot at the top to show the lot specific info and the first two photos (two single row portals starting at the record 1 and record 2 of the linked PhotoList table respectively). Can anyone tell me if this could be created within Filemaker? I'd like to add an audio player towards the bottom of a layout. It isn't a popover but more so embedded into the bottom of the same layout as the portal would be. You often see this with online sites like SoundCloud or similar. Hey folks, I created a simple layout with a portal. I included a couple of fields and a popover for an audio file. When I click on the green popovers and add an audio file, they seem to transfer to the other 2 portal rows but when I click on the yellow pop-ups, and pick any value from the list, they are independent of each other. Hey folks, I have a three-part question but all related. 1. I understand that when highlighting text in any field, the color is based on the operating system's settings (in my case, Mac's System Settings, Appearance). Can I use Filemaker to force and set the desired color rather than the OS's settings? 2. See the image with the calendar, can the highlighted box have the same "Corner Radius", just like the field? 3. See either image, can the text turn to white, only when it is highlighted? Hey guys, I created a portal and added a field and a button. The field is a pop-up list and the field and button do not overlap. See screenshot. As it stands, the button is located on the right side of the portal so I can only delete the row if the mouse is hovering over the button. What I would like it to do is when I hover over the entire row, the trash can will appear but I can only delete the row if I click on the trash can and nowhere else. I hope this makes sense. Hey folks, I have a portal that includes a single field. As you can see from the screenshot, all of the rows are purple, including the “add keyword” row. I want the “add keyword” row to be light gray until I add a word from my pop-up list and it’ll immediately turn purple, like the others. As it stands, they're all purple. Hello everyone. Is there a way to adjust the dimensions of layout parts (body, header, footer, etc.) dynamically from a script? I have a popup dialog layout that I use as a card window, but depending on how much text there is I want to be able to shrink its height. I tried changing the height of the card window, but that doesn't shrink the layout itself and creates scrollbars. Any ideas or workarounds?

Hi, I have a database with about 300 fields in a single table, organized by Custom Order. It's a flat file (non-relational) data collection tool that I'm exporting to Excel for a statistician (the field names make sense in Excel). When I make changes to fields, I want to navigate from the field in Layout Mode to the specific field in Manage Database to eliminate searching by scrolling. Is this possible? Alternatively, is there a way to search for a field in Manage Database? Thank you.

Our database has a container field that we mostly have PDF's inside of, with the occasional PNG. Currently we have this container in three different layouts. On all layouts the scrollbar is visible when applicable. However, only one layout allows the users to interact with this scrollbar. This includes using the scroll wheel of the mouse and dragging the scrollbar with a click of the mouse. I've tried ensuring all the settings for this container field are identical across the three layouts, but nothing seems to fix this issue. One thing to note is the layout where it works properly does have the same Associated Table as the container itself, whereas the other two layouts …

I use FileMaker Pro 15 and I've created a photo catalogue for sorting exhibitions and books. I tried to create a PDF document via the Print function on a Mac. Print > Save as PDF but the margins are quite large. The image layout is 590 x 320cm without a header or footer and the page setup is these same dimensions with zero margins. I was hoping to get near edge to edge images but the margins are quite large. There are what look like grey page breaks every two images. Is there any way to reduce the margins in FileMaker or is this just a quirk of PDF page generation?

I have been slowly redoing my solutions with the relatively new feature of using a portal to filter the results from the same table on a Form layout. This takes the place of having a list view and then clicking on the item to get the form view. I have a table of Lessons. One of the fields is Topics. I would like to have the functionality where I could select, within the Lessons Form, from a list of Topics, and then the self-portal on the form would show me all the lessons on that topic. I've been using FileMaker for over 20 years, but up until today had never tried making a chart with it. I'm tracking the dates that students inquire about my school and would like to make a line chart that shows total per month for each year. I have the date field, a month(date) field, and a year field. There are a few hundred records. It's clear that I need to do something else to get this to work but I'm not sure what it is. Do I need to create 12 global fields that count the number of records for each month? If so, is that what I would put on the y axis? Do I need to add something to the relationship graph?

I run a school and keep track of almost everything related to the school in a FM database that I developed. The one thing that I don't use the database for is making transcripts. For this I have been using MS Word, making one file for each student. But I would prefer to have the database do it. To do this, I take the transcript template in word, save as PDF, and then insert it as the background on a layout. The functionality of this works fine except that I cannot figure out what the strategy is for creating the layout so that it prints as a pdf or just prints to paper in a way that works. As part of their workflow, some of our employees prefer to drag-and-drop PDF's into the container fields of our FileMaker database. This works with files in local directories, but if they try to drag a file from a network folder nothing appears to happen to the database. If they use the Insert>Insert PDF command, or if we use the Insert File function in a script, then the files are imported perfectly even if they are in a network folder. I'm curious if anyone else has run into this, or if we simply have something strange going on with our network stack. This happens across multiple computers. All users are on Windows 11. Hi, I have a simple calculation field that consists of a fraction. The numerator and denominator are both number fields. On my layout, I've formatted the calculation field as a percent with a fixed number of decimals of "2". The result is decimal (not a percent), and the decimals are not fixed to 2 but instead have 16 numbers following the decimal. I've tried formatting the field as decimal with a fixed number of 2, and get the same result (16 numbers following the decimal). I've tried with and without storing calculation results. Hullo everyone! I'm using FM Pro 18 Advanced. I'm wondering if there's a way to format a field so that, should the content be longer than the field allows, the font is reduced until it is all visible. Basically, we have a couple of suppliers with extra- long product codes & at the moment they get cut off. I have a summary field that shows the total of the prices of items listed in a portal. The summary field is a part of the table of line items, but is mainly viewed next to the portal, in another table. When I make changes to line items in the table (quantity, tax status, or discount), the summary field doesn't refresh unless I click somewhere on the layout outside of any field. Is there a way of doing this action by script? Refreshing the portal doesn't help, and re-looking up the value doesn't help (just gives an error).

Hi all, In FORM view I created some pop-up value lists assigned to fields defined as foreign key fields to related records from another table. The value lists are defined as using the "id" of the first field, and displaying the second field "name". Nothing unusual with this and works as intended. In TABLE view, the field functions just as it does in FORM view. This is fine for "data-entry" and functions as one would expect. However, there are times when I wish to see the values from the first field in TABLE view, and not the "display values from second field". How can I achieve this? Looking for any tips. I have a very involved file, a complete software package for people wanting to offer Career Coaching. There are fields that information gets entered into, and a variety of functions to assist in the career process. I want to convert the entire file for use in China. I was adding files to a tab, which is very hard if you haven't worked with tabs in some time. Hard to select exactly what you want to. Somehow one of the tab names disappeared. I have a date field on a layout (in a portal, if that makes any difference) that allows the user to select a date with the drop-down calendar. I noticed that it is replacing the date selected by the user with the current date, at least at first. If you click it again and re-select the desired date, it will stick the second time. There are no auto-enter options or default values set. I have the 4-digit year and not empty requirement boxes checked. What gives? This is in FMP 16.

Filemaker 16 pro on the Mac - Ventura 13.0.1. HP OfficeJet 9015e Printer Long term Filemaker user. clearly used to be able to do this easily. Regardless of the Layout, when in table view wanting to print our what's showing specifying all "records being browsed" in the print dialogue box, the app only prints out one record - the record in the table that happens to be selected. This has never happened to me before. "Records being browed" are all the records currently showing in the table view, right? Is there something I'm missing? Some setting that prevents Filemaker from pushing out all "records being browsed" in the table to the printer?

I’m considering adding popovers to my main layouts (accessible only to my account) which will contain most or all fields, portals, etc., to ease testing and more. #1 Since the popovers will be hidden from view, do the fields, etc cause any slowdown, memory usage, or other negative issues? #2 If the popover button is visible, but the popover window is not open, is memory, etc impacted or only when the popover window itself is opened? As you'll see in the attached video, when leaving the Address field, the blue line in place when the field is In Focus disappears other than the top section. Turning off the Inside Shadow fixes the problem. Is this a known issue or something I'm doing wrong? BlueLine.mp4

Hi all, I'm currently testing our filemaker database on Server and Client 19, previously using 16. When viewing layouts that previously printed off as PDF, they're now cutting in half and being split into multiple parts. The page split is in the green box in the below image: In layout mode in the position section, I can modify the width but not the height. Does anyone know how I can solve this?

I have a layout with multiple portals and quite a bit going on behind the scenes. There was a very noticeable delay in portal hover effects and tooltip presentation so I tore the layout apart to find the cause. It turns out that none of the complexities had anything to do with it, so I thought I'd share the cause with you. I'm attaching 2 videos which unfortunately don't show the portal hover row background color, but you can see the tooltip delay, which is gone in the second video. A user is in a field which displays a dropdown list and hits the 'ESC' key, thereby selecting no item from the list. I'd like to trigger a script at this point, but it seems that simply closing the dropdown list by means of the ESC key, remaining within the same field, cdoesn't fall within the functionality of any of the script triggers. Is this correct? Is there a workaround? Put in a different way, if a user hits the ESC key, opting not to select an item from the dropdown list, I want to close the popover which holds that field. Why would my checkmarks shrink and/or how do I control their size? When I set up this field two weeks ago, the checkmark was at least as big as the box and maybe bigger. I got two email address fields. Validated for a @ present, and no hard returns and no empty spaces. Both are set for entry in the Find mode. Rather plain. Entering an existing email address into the Find mode, delivers a Not found. The others fields do act normal in Finds. The email address field is just one of many. The dbase has been operating since 1988 and I have never experienced this odd behaviour. I tried with the validation switched off. No difference. Any idea what I might have overlooked?

I have a list of clients. Every time I see them I have to record data about them that changes with time and I have to keep all the data collected, one set per date visited. Each set of date dependent data has multiple sub-sections. Something like this: CLIENT --< DatedFactfind --< Subsection. I'm creating a billing report; pdf from layout. The typical Database Relationship was Client->Entity->Billable Thing. The report/layout is based on Billable Thing table and then grouped by Client and then Entity with sub-summaries. Now, wrench in the mix, multiple Clients can share an Entity hence the Many-To-Many relationship. When it comes to billing, for example, if two client's share an Entity 50/50, when creating a billing report, I still want Group By Client, then Entity, but show the billable things listed twice, once under each Client/Entity. This way it can be seen discretely what each Client is being billed for. I'm not sure this is possible…

Delete Portal Row with Dialog OFF or ON, reports [3] Command Unworkable (Wrong operating system or mode). Any advice - as this step doe snot work, script correctly moves on to next relevant record, all the way through the DB. I am have done a find for clients flagged as cancelled, then move to policy portal records for the client, check that policy is also flagged as cancelled and if so, wish to delete this record with the "Delete Portal Row [With dialog: OFF]", but then get the error message. I have Clients, who can have many policies and each policy can have more than one claim. The Client view already has the Client details displayed on the left of the screen, a Policy portal next to it and if a policy number is selected (clicked) the policy details are displayed below - all on one screen. I have a "purchase date" field on a layout. I know I can set the format to "as entered", "12/28/14", "Dec. 25, 2014" etc. But I would like to let the user choose the format, say from a pop-down list. I suppose I could stack a bunch of differently formatted fields on top of each other, and hide all but the one format the user chooses. But is there a simpler way?

I need to be able to show a preview in the container in much the same way that a jpg shows the image in the container. When loading a pdf into a container with Optimize for images selected filemaker has the following behavior. When loading a pdf into a container on my mac using right click - insert file, or script step - insert file, or simply dragging and dropping into the container, I get a preview of the first page in the container which is exactly what I need. Good afternoon. Let's say I have a layout with several boxes on it that span the width of the page, and each box is a different section of data. Between each box vertically is a space of approximately 1cm so that when printed the boxes are not all jammed together. I have changed the visibility on some of these boxes and content so if that section is not required on the report then it is not shown, and the items below it move up - that all works fine. My question please is that if - for example - 6 sections (consecutive) are not required on a report, then there is a gap of around 6 cm between the section above and below it. Knowing that employee records are saved in (Staff car Layout), the dashboard will belong in ( visitor system layout.) while press the update button gives me zero and ignores any record save daily as shown above. My solution is hosted in FMS on a Mac and there are a couple of Windows 10 clients. Some layouts include container fields set up to display PDF files (optimized for interactive content). Those pdf files are stored externally in the server but clients run the solution through a local file. Under Mac it's all right, but under Windows 10 it's a nightmare: it happened before, suddenly those PDFs don't display and it all seems caused by a software update (I can't tell if it's Windows 10 or Adobe Reader). Trying to create reports. Stuck on my Music_Title layout. Currently, I have two fields: Music_TItleA and Music_TitleB. Where the format is an Album, CD, EP it displays Music_TItleA because both sides are the same. BACKGROUND I have a musical performance management solution (Gigs) which contains several tables including Gigs (performance dates, times, etc.), Songbook (information about an actual song performed), gigs_PERFORMANCES which joins the two, and other related tables. For our retail store layout, we created a dropdown to allow the user to select an existing item of clothing, although we were hoping to filter this further by the category that the user selected (i.e.; kids, outerwear, women, males, shoes) so that they would not have to scroll through everything to find what they need. For example, the user would enter kids wear, and then the dropdown would solely have clothing related to kidswear.

What I need to do is provide sequential line number for records instances on a report in list view. The number is of no value other than to provide a visual tool for departments to communicate. It's not stored, and it's not referenced by any other field or table. But the numbering must restart after a sub summary break for a new category. As you can see by my example (see pic for example marked in red) where the numbering continues 6,7,8... I need that to restart as 1,2,3..... at the new category. Good day, I am having an issue that i never seen before. I have a very basic layout, 5 fields, and a global field for searching with a button to execute the search, all is working perfect, except that when i press the search button the result shift to the right, once i clear to show all the list shift back to the left. I have a layout which is a list of names and addresses. There are 7 records and on the layout they are displayed from top to bottom. However, because he list is too long to fit on one page, when I print this list, the last two records print as a partial second column (apparently they are too wide) and not as a second page. How can I get the list to print as only one column and when it reaches the bottom of the page, print on a new page instead of as another column? Additional information. Sorry. I'm using Filemaker 19 on Windows 7.

Consider a long list of records in list view. For each record there is a field. When an entry is made in the field, a script is run and at the conclusion the next record is selected. When reaching the bottom of the layout, the next record is not visible unless the user scrolls up. This has to be repeated for all of the remaining records. Is there a way to always keep the selected record, say in the middle of the layout? Or t least always visible?

Hi, I have encountered an error message I have never seen before. When trying to copy anything at all (fields, text, etc) in Layout mode and paste it on to the layout, I get the message: "This operation cannot be completed because it would exceed the maximum allowed dimensions of a layout." I have a client layout which displays one client per page. Each client has several phone numbers (home, work, mobile). I created a separate table for phone numbers (one to many) connected by the clientID. The phone table has ID, clientFK, type (mobile, home, work), and number. I created a portal on the client page to display the various numbers for each client. It works ok. I then created a Client list. Can I display a specific number from the phone list on the portal?? Hi, I'm newbie in filemaker, and I have started to build my first new database, but a new challenge floated on the surface that I believe someone can help. I have a category field "consignment item" that unit of measurement could be different (Kilogram, ton, animal, ...etc). The problem when I want to group or sort my report based on the "consignment item", the subtotal field count every value in the "amount" field whatever the unit of measurement was. My first post on FM Forums so be gentle and don't flame... I'm desperate to ditch MS Access and a virtualised window on a Mac. I've created a new DB from data exported from Access - that's all good. I've got lookup working and summary fields working. I can also generate month and year fields via a calculation from a date field. But for the life of me, I cannot get the report to group *all* records from a given month in one block, no matter what I try. Instead, the report insists on grouping by day. I have just bought an HP printer. Everything works fine with the printer, colour works fine with coloured logos etc in Filemaker. However when I print a page with a container field with a picture in it the picture prints in B & W when it should be coloured. Any help appreciated.

I have a layout allowing the user to add custom categories to a drop down menu on another layout since these will change. A name plus active or inactive checkboxes. THE PLAN When the user interacts with the drop down menu the inactive names do not appear only active names. The idea is to also retain the record when the name becomes inactive in the future. Example Bob is active in May and available as a choice, but retires in June so no longer active so no longer available as choice, but if I look up that May record I still want to see Bob' name. Inactive and active checkboxes must act in concert and only one can be checked at any given time.

I have a PDF that I cannot view in a container field. Interactive Content is checked. I assume the PDF file is valid because if I'm in Layout Mode with Sample Data on, the image shows in the container field. But, once I go to Browse mode, it doesn't show. If I view container attributes in the data viewer, it appears everything is as it should be. Any thoughts? Thanks, whardy

I'm testing the interactive content container and am finding that the video autoplay is unreliable (in my trials at least). I've checked 'Start playback automatically' in inspector but its hit and miss whether it works or not, but mostly not. Any ideas? Is there also a keyboard shortcut to run a video as spacebar doesn't work? I'm using FMPro 15.

Somehow the layout structure in Manage Layouts is out of sync with the structure of the menu that appears on layouts. (see attached.) How do get them back in sync? I'm wondering if this is a legacy issue. I have jumped versions of FM recently—from FM 15 Pro to 18 Advanced Pro.

I am working on a shopping list. I have a drop down for the item I wish to add to the list, and for the amount to purchase. Hi All, While in browse mode is there a way to detect if the active window (my layout) has visible scroll bars ? After using the "Adjust Window - size to fit" script step... I have a layout that is a list of items, depending on the number of records, this is likely to extend beyond the bottom of the layout window. If that happens FM (or the computer OS) will show a vertical scroll bar - that bar will "eat up" layout space and force a bottom scroll bar because of the 16 px of the scroll bar. Hi all I have a customer list in a drop down. The drop down field has an On Save script trigger which then performs a find in the same layout for the selected customer. The drop down field is configured to 'go to next object using' return. There is also an On Record Load trigger on the layout which pops up with a dialog if the customer's Attention field is populated. This all works fine unless I utilise the option to save the drop down field with the enter button. It ends up looking like this, with the white background. Once the user clicks OK the layout 'appears'. Thanks!

It's me again. This time my question is centered around how to reference a summary value from table A in a calculation in table B. The end goal is to calculate a running average of seconds per plant in the 'TrackingData' table by dividing time in seconds 's_Cumultaive Seconds' by 's_Cumulative PlantCount' from the 'Shipping Volume' table. After doing a bit of research I know that it's not possible to use the values of a summary field from table A in table B. I've got another question about subsummary parts and how to ensure that they present data for reports as expected. I have a database for our homeowner's association with lots of information that works very well, but have run into a problem when trying to print a directory of members. Most of the directory information is in the MAIN table; however, there is a second CHILD table with an occurrence for each child that resides at the address listed in MAIN. There is a sub-summary section when sorted by address, where I print all of the information listed in MAIN, and then I list the CHILD information in the body.
