Hello, I am trying to build a layout for printing a pdf document. I have built a table that have many fields to cover almost every stituation that might arise. When I print this, I want to find a way to make the empty fields (and the accompany field name) disappear so that blank spaces and field names with no accompany data do not clutter up the lay out. I've tried conditional formatting to make the field name go blank when its accompnay field is blank. I've done as much sliding up as I can to minimize the field size. But I have these annoying blank spaces are still there. If anyone might have any ideas, please let me know. Thank you

Is there any way to choose the color of a color stop in the gradient part of Inspector prior to creating it? In other words, when I click on the gradient to create a color stop it gets created with what appears to be randomly chosen colors. I'd like to be able to control what the color stop's color is upon creation if I can. Thanks in advance, -Kent

I'm attempting to create a database to store id documents for people in a multi-departmental firm for anti-money laundering purposes. People can belong to more than one client files. Client files can have more than one person. People can have more than one piece of id. As I see it, I have a one to many relationship between people and id and a many to many relationship between people and client files. So I have created a join table to handle that. I may not have the relationship mapped out correctly though. Or perhaps it's the field settings. Hello, I'm new here and new also in dealing with filemaker 10. Maybe someone of you experts can help me.... :-) I set up a layout with text and fields on a MAC and there the layout looks fine. But also PC users need to use this layout. The problem is that on the PC fields, lines and text are a little bit mixed up. Do you have any idea, how I can solve this problem? Hi, We'd like to try to develop a simple model using levers and sliders. Does anyone know if this is possible in FMPro? The slider would have three positions and graphically represent, Hi Med Lo, with the calcs being some sort of factor. Does this sort of thing exist? I know I can use XmCharts to enter text and use gauges, etc. but looking to move a slider, not enter a value. Thanks

Is there a way in Filemaker Pro 11 to display data from two records that are from the same table on one layout? I thought I could use a portal to display/print the second record's data, but when I try to set up the portal the current table (and all other tables in the database) are grayed out so cannot be selected. It has been a long time since I did more than just enter data in the database, so anything I knew about portals is apparently forgotten. I built a couple of fairly simple databases in FMP v11 to catalog some art using one of the pre-made inventory templates. Both databases are used in a multi user environment. The "Insert Picture" button to place an image in the field has this simple script: Go to Field [Product Catalog:Image] Insert Picture [] In the first database this worked just fine. In the second one, the field randomly drops images, even in single user mode. After some searching I found one suggestion which I tried - adding this to the script: Set Field [Product Catalog:Image] Commit Records/Requests [] Still no go. Hi, I have a script that I'm studying. It involves a drop down field that triggers a script on OnObjectModify, then a condition as a result of the value change. This is currently working intermittently, with the drop down still appearing selected. If I deselect it, by clicking in blanc space somewhere on the layout, the condition completes as desired. It looks to me as if I'm forcing a final update on this extra click. I've tried script steps like Refresh Layout, toggling menus, scrolling but I can't find anything to mimic this step. Any thoughts? I have a layout where the users can enter text in a text field that is set up without a scroll bar. I would like them to know when to click on a button or just click inside the field which expands the text box so they can see all the text. Next to the title of the field I would place a conditional merge field that would say "to see more click here" If the text fit inside the window they would not see the message to see more. My issue is I have set up a text field with 10 lines of text (due to layout constraints). Some users will type in a paragraph and then enter one or two paragraph returns and then continue typing. Is there a plug-in or a workaround to FM 11 not recognizing the Windows keyboard "enter" key on the numeric keypad for entering data into an edit box? The edit box holds a list of items which are defined by numbers. However each number needs to be separated by a return. Googling shows this has been a long time issue - I'm hopeful someone has a solution by now? Fingers Crossed!

I can cut and paste text from, say, another application into an input box on FM Pro if I am on the host computer. But when I am a client connected to a host, pasting text no longer works: I have to input text data by hand. Is there any way to enable pasting of text on a client? Thanks.

I have 2 fields, a Move In Date and Move Out Date. I need a report/layout that is a "Receipt", that takes those two dates (example January 1 and March 15) and then puts them on the receipt as: January 1st, 2012 January 2nd, 2012 January 3rd, 2012 etc etc Until it gets to March 15. Each line has a rental rate, and I need to put a total on there, but I can handle all that. It's the daily breakout that i'm struggling with. Any advice? Thank you!

I have successfully built an "Estimate Worksheet" layout (in the context of "Estimate", with a portal based on the table "EstlimateLineItem"). This is working fine, with fields from related tables populating properly. Okay, this one is a baffler. I have a simple sub-summary layout set up and on one part I have places a text string that includes a couple of merge fields and some intervening text. I've created the string in Layout by starting from scratch, Inserting a merge fields, typing some characters, inserting another merge field and finishing with a little more text. Everything's in Helvetica 12 point. THis displays fine. Ok. BUT . . . if I select the *entire* text block with the arrow tool and increase the font size to 18, I find the first merge field stays small while everything after it is properly enlarged! First, I apologise for being a newbie. I have quite a bit of experience with another database programme, but not much with FileMaker. I have a database with 3 tables. Each table has a layout by default and I have created another layout that has two tabs with portals. So far so good. I don't seem to be able to switch between the various layouts with ease; I have to choose Edit Layout, select the one I want, and then exit the Edit mode in order to move between them. The dropbox under Layout at the top of the screen only lists the layout I am currently in. How do I get my other layouts to display there? Many thanks, Skiffy

When playing around with FMP12 last night, I opened one of the starter solutions. The first thing I noticed was that it fit perfectly on my screen's window perfectly both maximized and restored down. How do they do this? I have a 18.4" screen running at 1920 x 1080. I went into the startup script and didn't see anything that would direct the app to do this. When I went into layout mode, the dimensions for that layout are 900pt x 640pt. In the 'file options' dialog and under Switch to Layout, it specifies "Startup Screen". I have wanted to know for quite some time but I was embarrassed to ask. Today, I have the nerve so here goes when viewing a layout and I set inspector to inches, and I put the rules on the layout, and I set the page setup to portrait, it shows the page is 8 1/2 inches wide. And zoom is 100%. When I hold up a piece of standard paper which is 8 1/2 inches wide, it goes from 0 to 10 3/4 wide. How am I supposed to understand this? When I preview, it looks right. But I design in layout mode and not preview. Why isn't the ruler accurate? Or is the 100% zoom which isn't accurate? Or do I need glasses?

We may have a ghost in our filemaker app! We have a simple "find" screen, where users input a word or phrase to search on. They then hit find. Near and dear is the red underline clueing the user in that the word they are searching on is misspelled. When the folks (who are on windows) right click to select the correctly spelled suggested word, a duplicate box displays in browse mode showing the suggested word, about 2 inches below the original field. The suggested word also updates the original field. That duplicate box doesn't exist on the layout, and it does go away if you hit tab or anywhere outside of the original field with the search term. Hi, I am a novice user of Filemaker Pro 11. I am facing a problem. In a layout i wanted to create a field. This field should allow the user to type in bar-code or bar-code device will automatically put it in the field. But the problem is that I want to make the field in such a way that allows auto enter. It means as the user type the bar-code the field should show it the related values. These values are in a another table. I have a client who occasionally needs to copy and paste addresses from an FMP field and into a Word document. He is asking if I can set the field so that the text can be copied "without text formatting". Apparently in his previous FM solution (which were .fp5) when they pasted in text, it automatically adopted the target document's font/size etc. He writes: "Yes, the pop-up displays in 13 pt. Arial. I have a layout for a chart with three parts: Leading Grand Summary, and 2 sub--summaries. The data and chart are displaying ok. I've written a script to display the layout in a new window, with a 'Resize to Fit' window step included. But when I trigger the script, I'm getting a window that stretches the entire height of my screen, with a huge blank space for the bottom half. Also, there's a mysterious grey band showing below the last data line. I note that this grey band gets thicker if I increase the size of the first sub-summary part. I'd kind of like to get rid of the grey band - - and the window really needs to be a little 'shrunk to fit' the data. …

Hi, I'm trying to find out if there is a way to know hen the text entered to a field exceeds its boundaries. I'm not talking about the number of characters but the actual (pixel?) size of the text. For example If my field is 160 x 30 pixels (which is about 2 rows), and the text from the first row continues on the second row - how can I detect that? The field is actually displaying two rows, while it is actually one row and one value... To the curious ones: I'm doing this so I can display to the user that there is more data in the field then what they see ...and no..we cannot use the vertical scroll bar tnx Xtrim

Is there a way to configure a Container field so that the user is forced to Insert "Only a reference to the File" -- rather than storing the file within the database? IT seem it must be possible, but I don't see this anyplace. I'd think it might be in the field definition, but don't see it. . . If not, what's the best way to discourage a user from storing the file in the database -- perhaps a script trigger of some kind...? Maybe if the field contents are of too great a size, a script clears the field and demands a reference only? I'm in FM 11 in this case. Thanks

Hi Everyone, I'm relatively new to Filemaker and was hoping some of you might be able to help with this. I have a database with a list of issues, with fields for severity, appendix # & appendix descriptions, among others. (the idea is that multiple issues would be grouped into appendix 1, 2, 3, etc.). I'm trying to create a summary report that would list Appendix #s & Descriptions sorted by severity (and look much like a list in a word doc- having issues getting to that with the report layout). The additional challenge is I would need to remove the duplicate records, so we only see one Apppendix I, not 5 of them. Any help would be much appreciated.

I am using FMPro 11 Advanced. New to FM reports. I want to count the number of children by three categories: 1) by certain age ranges (0-3, 4-6, and the number of children over 7 years of age) 2) by the type field (I only want to see Children and not include other types in the report and 3) by fiscal quarter/year. I'm use to building queries in MS Access where I build the criteria into the query for the enduser... or add parameter values so they can input values themselves. I am trying to set up a system for my company's freelancers. I have a "Freelancers", "Projects" and "Invoice" table. What I want is automatically create an invoice on the 15th and last day of every month for all the freelancers who have done projects. Obviously only the projects done during that time period should in the invoice. Can anyone advise me on the best way to go about doing this? So I have a container field thats set up for Interactive Content, when viewed in filemaker it shows simple the first page with a scroll bar on the right that allows you to scroll through the 24 page document. I've got a total of a count displayed in the header field. The calculation appears correctly, ut does not display the when I first enter the layout. The odd thing is that when I go to Manage Database, click on the field in question (to try and rectify the problem), and then return to the layout, the number appears! Can any one explain what is going on, and how I might fix this problem? Thank you for your help.

This is more of a suggestion of alternatives than any sort of "help" question. I have a home screen layout which displays when the database is opened and also goes back to after 30 mins of inactivity. It's divided into 7 columns (1 for each day of the week). There are then essentially 3 rows representing AM, PM and Night. Each time of the day is again separated into 2 rows - jobs that have not been allocated to a staff member in one row and the other row containing jobs that have been allocated OR staff that say they're available for that time of day. So, 7 columns for each day and 6 rows into total with 2 each representing each time of the day. I hope that…

I have a form for viewing images. I use a calculation (See Below) to display the file. The problem is with the results it is showing just the filename and the generic icon for an image, not the actual image. If I just drop a container field in and reference the image it works fine. Now if I double click on the image icon it will open the image up on the mac and windows computers. Thoughts on how to get the image to preview in the calculation container field? In French, the first day of the month should be formatted like this "le 1er juin 2012" even if all the other days of the month don't take a suffix and are like this "le 2 juin 2012". FM's date formatting functions don't allow this. However i 'm sure there is a calculation or a custom function that could do the trick, I just can't figure out how to do it. If anyone has any ideas to get me started, I'd love to here them.

Is there way to get a list of the Fonts that were used on a layout? I would like not to have to go, field by field, to do this. I am trying to create a database for our timesheets (please see attached sample). There are 16 routes, which I have set up in a Route table. I have also set up a table for the drivers and stops. The top section (bus number, name, date, miles, fuel) are the same area on each one, but the bottom part that has to do with the route (route name/number, stops, times, counts) would be different fore each one. My first thought is to put the bottom part into a portal. Would this be the logical choice? Or is there a better way to do it? I can send the FM file if that would help. Hi all, I'm making a 'catalog' database. The user basically picks a few products from a list and then gets a fancy printout showing pictures of the product on the left and a description on the right. The "picture" part is a web viewer which loads the product image off the company website. In some cases however, the image for the product is not online, it is however available in an internal database, in a container field. Ive created my database a few years ago now with two tables: tb_customers and tb_jobinfo. The customers jobs layout displays the customers details and a portal displaying the relevant jobs carried out for that customer over the years. To create a new job, I scroll down the portal to click an empty field and fill in. I would like to replace this layout showing the customers info as above but then a 2x tab control, first tab displaying 'Current job', in other words the last job entered for that customer. I am modifying the projects template to get it how I want it. I have managed to do something to the Status drop down that results in a field not modifiable error. After some searching this seems to be because of an error attached to a script. I have done, I believe, that could introduce this error is change the name of one of the fields from project to item, in a completely naive way thinking that nothing else would be effected by the change; do'h! Howdy, I cannot believe I cannot find an answer to something that must be so obvious. When I am working, with a pre made template, in the editing mode it looks great. I have added extra fields, got everything lined up, bob's your uncle, fanny's your aunt. I then go to use it and I find boxes are larger, drop downs are not exactly where I placed them, etc. What is it that I have got so completely wrong please? Hello I have a subsummary report that I have set to page break before each occurance when sorted by a specific field. This is the only reason I am using a subsummary report. The report is a 3 column report going across first. Whether or not I have Restart page numbers after each occurance, the page number always shows as Page 1. How do I get real page numbers? Hi, I saw an online image of a Filemaker layout that displays a list of names on one side of the layout, which when clicked upon, will display all the information associated with the selected name on the other side. I wanted to make such a layout but have limited knowledge on how to achieve it. The image in question: I would also like to allow the users to create new records in the same layout and filter the names like in the image. Why wouldn't Filemaker have a Master Template that you deisgn your buttons, shapes and layout positioning and then other layouts are based on this? Something along the lines of Powerpoint's / Dreamweaver's 'Master Template'. So time-comsuming going through 20 layouts to move your button 3 pixels on each layout. Do it once on the Master Template and all layouts based on it are changed. Voila! Surely it can't be that hard???

I have noticed on some of the new solution that some of the header fields/object move based on the screen sizing and not locked into a fixed location. I have a number of fields in a data entry layout which are set up as Drop-Down Lists with the "Include Arrow to Show/Hide" list box checked, but for some reason the arrows are no longer visible. There is a small white space where the arrows used to be and if you click on that small space the list works like the drop-down list it is supposed to be. But the arrows are invisible. Anyone else seeing this problem in FMP 12? thanks

I've built a Runtime solution for a user (not Admin) where the status bar is hdden and locked in the startup script. Later on, when the user goes to print, the Status bar is Shown again for him to navigate the pages in preview mode. However. All the Status bar buttons (except for forward and Back page Navigation) are greyed out and disabled. Why? On that note. if the user presses the exit preview mode, I have at the moment a Layout OnEnter scriptrigger to hide (& Lock) the status bar again. Is there any other way to do this except for a layout script trigger? Thanks so much and have yourself a magnificent day.

I have a strict validation set up a that tells the user he cannot change that field. However, the Validation message comes up wiht two buttons - 'Revert Field' and 'OK'. 'OK' does nothing and only the 'Revert Field' should be visible and selectable. Is there any way to get rid of the 'OK' button? Thanks so much and have a great day!

I have created a solution that uses a specific font that I provide to the client along with the FM file to install. If the user doesn't install the font, can I set the FM file to use E.g. hi, i have a problem regarding formatting of my product fields. the default parameters are: arial, 11size, plain, black etc. my native language is latvian and when i am typing characters like: ā, ē, ī etc., then the font changes to HEITI SC light. is there a way to fix this issue? i would like that all fields are ALWAYS formatted like this: arial, 11size, plain, black etc. and when i copy some text from webpages into my product description it also copies the formatting. it would be great if it would also have the default formatting. sincerely, raitis

I am creating a database to produce Teaching materials for the classroom (flashcards, Pictionary boards etc.) I notice that the default printer margins for me are; 0.28cm for top and left Margins 0.32cm for Bottom and Right Margins I will produce this as a runtime version and the flashcards need to fit perfectly on all Printer margins for a number fo users. Do all modern day printers have the same margins? Is there a margin width I can leave that ensures that no matter which the user/printer, the flashcards will fit perfectly? Not sure where to put this question. It's about printing but it is also about layouts. It might also involve portals. I have a task list for managing activities in my cabinet shop. Each cabinet has about 100 processes which is way more records than will fit on a single page. I would like to manage them in a list format but I want all the items to fit onto a single page. The end result would look similar to the attached jpeg. Is there a way to show columns like this on a single layout?

In FM12, I have a field called City and State. When the user enters the city field I want "Brooklyn" to be a default unless the user changes it. Same with "NY" for state. Is there a way to do this without doing it in view database fileds and making that happen as a default there. Then it will happen all the time. Maybe I only want it to happen in certain layouts. Mike

Hold your hats! I'm finally trying to move from 9 to 12 - slowly. Anyway, my question is as follows. I'm trying to combine separate files into one file with separate tables. So I have a file called parents and one called students. I copied the database and fields from students to parents. So far so good. Now the problem. I would very much like to get the student layouts into the new table in the parents file. No idea how. Can I? Should I chuck the whole idea now? I have two questions. First, when you create a field and drag that field to be larger than one line, you can see dotted lines until you save the layout. I would like those lines to stay visible so that when I print they are there on the printed copy. Second, when printing, for some reason my footer prints on the first page and then the second page prints and has no footer. Thanks for the help. :)

I created a freeware membership application and 'released it on the world' . (Since I am in the USA it reflects USA postal and phone standards) ha I am getting requests from through the world for 'versions' for different contries. (UK postal codes are like nothing I have ever imagined) Question:"Is it best to make different versions for different countries (ie, UKMembership and CANADAMembership etc) knowing that this method is an update nightmare... Just converted my FM11 files to FM12 using the trial version of FM Pro 12. I have 'hidden' portals on many screens. Up through FM11 I was able to hide the scroll bars through line transparency, but they all show on the converted FM12 layouts. It looks like I'm going to have to go through all my layouts (hundreds of them) and hide all the scroll bars again. Don't know yet, but will I have the same problem with fill on fields and other objects where I had used the transparency option in FM11 (this would be especially painful for updating conditional formatting)? Am I missing something?

I am trying to develop a chart of tasks for my cabinet shop. This chart has three fields: Account , Task, Code I would like to constrain the printout (or layout) to only include the ACCOUNT description for each record just one time in the printed or viewed list. Ah the fun part. Describing my db and my problem. Well here goes... We print calendars with advertising on them. As the image below shows, i have a pretty typical invoice type solution although it has grown to be a monster, so in the screenshots I erased all the irrelivant tables. Note: Although my actual TOs don't have underscores in the names I used underscores in the write up below for ease of reading. Every single time I move a folder full of layouts in the Manage Layouts dialog, FM is making it a subfolder of what is directly above it. I can't get it to stop. Can anyone give me pointers? I want: Level 1 SubA SubB SubC And I'm getting this when I try to move C to be above A: Level 1 SubC SubA SubB I am not able to get A or B out of C unless I move them above C...which then puts all below into the just moved folder. Very frustrating!! Well that didn't show up correctly. See attached. The folders with red dots should be in the same outermost level.

OK, can someone tell me the trick to printing in columns. I have it selected in the layout setup dialog and all my fields are set far to the left with plenty of room for 2 columns. As I was putting the layout together and testing, it did show up in 2 columns in preview maode at one point. Then i did some more tweeking and changes and it has not shown in 2 columns in preview mode since then. I've tried unselecting and reselecting but I just can't get it to display in columns. What is the trick?

Ok, to give you some background, my database has these tables: 1. Properties 2. Jobs 3. Customers 4. Quotes I want a Layout called "Dashboard", that basically has 4 columns, each titled the table names. Then I want it to say what "red flags" or "warnings" I have. For example, some of my warnings would be "A quote that is still open and it's been 7 days and I haven't followed up". If the contents of a field is too long to display I want it to simply get cut off without wrapping to the next line. I have tried adjusting the line spacing to try and push the wrapped text down low enough to where it's not visible but this prevents the first line from being displayed so that it is vertically centered. Does anyone have a trick for doing this? I wish FileMaker would add a simple "truncate text" checkbox to the field inspector options so I would not have to resort to writing multiple truncate calculations to get my layout to display how I want it.

Hello Forum, this has probably become second nature to you all, but I was trying to find a document, where syntax rules for the Layouts are listed. (e.g.: <<Name>> is replaced with the content of the "Name" field) I don't even know how that is called in filemaker. Layout Markup? Can it do some rudimentary logical evaluation? Usually, when I enter Layout Mode the whole screen (I have a widescreen display) has a white background with page and gridlines, etc displayed over the width (and depth) of the screen and I can utilse the whole of the screen to insert and manipulate fields/objects etc. However, on one particular dbase file, in L/O mode, the layout seems to restrict to just the parts and the rest of the screen background is blank grey - with no gridlines etc. Objects and fields do appear in this grey screen area (to the right of the L/O parts) but they cannot be dragged or dropped, only manipulated using the keyboard (see top picture attached). Hi, A customer wants a script to generate a "mail merge" from a small found set of People, creating a separate document for each letter. He wants to be able to open them in MS Word for additional editing, before printing them. I can define a layout with merge fields, no problem, but I have no idea how to write it (preserving the text stylings) to a file that can be read by Word. I have been looking round and can't seem to find this feature. Does anyone know if it is possible to display multiple records on one layout. I know I can do this in list view, however I need to be able to style the page and place fields in specific places on the page. To maybe give you a little better idea of what I am looking to do. Can someone give me some advice on how to carry out the following. I run a self-employed service company and the database I created years ago still works great, It consists of two tables: Customers and Jobs. I can see a customer and a list of jobs done for that customer. Its just that when I created the jobs table, I only created two 'date' fields; one for 'date booked', the other for 'date completed'. Hello Odd situation: when I try to change the indent value (either First, Left or Right) of a text field, using Inspector, the value reverts to what it was before the change. I simply cannot make the change stick, Anyone every come across this before? I can get round the problem by using Format Painter, but it's baffling me! Hello, My Mac has a huge 27" display. When I made my database, I made use of all the screen real estate I had and I've got scripts which open and size all the files which makeup my database (about 8 or 9 files pop open when I open the "main" file) In any case I've now got a few users sharing the database with me but some are using Laptops which have small screens. As a result, some windows open off the display area of the laptop! Very odd. I'm sure I read some useful tips about this someplace but can't find where. I often find myself in situations where I want to use a Marge Field as part of a field label, or worse yet a Button, but the space required in Layout mode to include the <<FieldName_TooLengthy>> in the text string means that the object extends too far and gets in the way of other objects. Hi all, I have an issue with getting a portal to display all the child records. As you can see in the ERD attached, there is a measurement table, that is a child of the test date table and both the measurement and the test date table are children of the people table. Hope I'm in the right part of the forum. Here's what I need to do. You tab to Field 1 and enter the data. Based on Field 1 (if such and such) you either go to Field 2 for entry or Field 3. If you go to Field 2, based on the data in Field 1 you may either be sent to Field 3 where the data from Field 2 is copied but you are alklowed to change it, or based on that data in Filed 1 you may skip Field 3 and move on to Field 4. Hi all, Using FM 11.0v4 on multiple machines (iMac OS 10.5.8) and everything works well. Upgraded a computer to a new iMac that came with 10.7. Our layouts include a logo- graphic file- that now does not show up randomly on that computer. Previewing the layout shows the logo once and then not the next time. It never prints the logo. All other information (fields, borders, boxes etc) show with no issue. I understand from a Google search, this is an issue with FM/ 10.7 handling .EPS files. I believe this one is a .tiff file (might have that wrong). One suggestion was to re-save the artwork in illustrator with a PICT preview. I don't know how to do …

I have a field thats connected to a value list, with 50 state abbreviations. On a mac, I can type "W" and the list will jump down to the W states. On a pc however, the exact same layout will not jump when I type a letter. Any ideas? Thanks Matt
