One part of work involves filing out forms with calculations. Is there a way in import an image of the form, so I can put my fields on top of it, and print the page as a whole with the form and the fields together, rather than having to load the printer with a xerox of the form, and adjusting my fields to fit that pre-printed form? I am using Pro 9 on a Mac. Thanks.

I am familiar with the the old FM5.0 trick (FMKnowledgeBase # 2971) to show summarized data as a single row in a portal by identifying the first record of a summarized group in a relationship. The problem is that it requires a script to set a field that identifies the first record of each group. Does anyone know of a more "elegant" way of doing this-one that does not rely on a script? TIA

Thank you for looking. I've just received my FMP this week and have learned how to make custom Layouts etc.. on my customer database. I'm setting up printing customers address on postcards and what I need to understand is how to print only customers with zip code 07728 for example. Hi all A simple lookup has me baffle to no get out. I have delete every table and have start over three times and have spent four hours today on this so I hope some one can find where I am going wrong. The bolt table is where I stored the bolts information. The Job_bolt table is where I want to stored the bolts required for a specific job. The vessel table is the input table. I am trying to "scrape" html source via the web viewer using the following script. Set Field [Patient::Source; GetLayoutObjectAttribute ("Reach" ; "Content")] "Reach" is the webviewer object name This works perfectly when run within filemaker, but when I run it over IWP (where I need it to run), the target field only displays the URL of the webviwer, rather than the source code. I am trying to find an easy way to use tabs as layouts. Instead of having 10 different layouts (say one for each of my databases tables), I could create just one, have 10 tabs and make them fit the entire screen. The problem seems to be that each tab would have to have a portal as i have to nominate 1 table for the master layout. I then loose the ability to view as form or list. I know I could create fake tabs and create 10 seperate layouts but it seems a wasted oppotunity to use what should be quite a flexable feature in Filemaker. Any suggestions would be welcome Thanks

I have been working on this for a while. Is there a way to populate portals in the way that Auto Complete (type as you go works) in a field. This layout displays fine in FMP 8.0v3 / Mac OS X 10.4, but not on Win2K. I'm just attaching a screen capture in the hopes that the problem will be familiar to someone. Will provide pixel-precision details if needed. It appears to be somehow related to the calculated container field that lies behind the text ("Cash"), which turns green to denote the current sort column. But I have tried shrinking that field drastically, as a debugging measure, and there is still about 1-1/2 cells-worth of graphic plastered over the footer of my layout. Thanks, Chap

We just signed up our database to be hosted on a shared server. The technician who signed us up mentioned the advantage of optimizing the database to be viewed on a web layout. Just trying to copy a few buttons with some text and pasting it a different layout, but it takes over a minute to do the actual paste. In fact I am receiving a paste progress bar while I am waiting. Is thing new in 9? There are no graphics involved, and no conditional formatting...just four squares and four text fields that have scripts attached. This is a remote file that I am working on. I think I might be headed down a rabbit hole. Finally I am rebuilding a DB that started in v4 and has grown into 11 different files, combining tables where appropriate and generally cleaning things up. And the tab object seems like a home run. Problem is that tab occurrences all share the same layout parts- right? Is there a way for different tabs to have different layout parts [subsummary needed, for example]? If not, am I stuck with using buttons and making them look like tabs? or am I missing an opportunity here?

Is there a way to change the caption on a button? I would like to be able to copy a button, paste a bunch of copies of it, change the action they perform, and then change their captions. It's faster than making different buttons and trying to resize them all to the same size. I know there's probably an easy way to do this but I just haven't been able to figure it out.

Hi, I have Advanced 8.5 installed on an intel iMac running 10.4.10. In layout mode, holding 'option' and dragging/dropping an element does not duplicate the element. Also, holding 'command' while dragging or multi-clicking does not allow multiple selection. Option and command keys seem 'broken' in layout mode, but work fine in other modes. There is nothing special set in System Prefs > Keyboard & Mouse. I have tried deleting the FMPro prefs without success. Option & command keys work fine in all other contexts and applications. Does anyone know what is causing this? Thanks, ft.

If I have a form open inside a web viewer in FM and I want to populate it with data from FM can this be done? Of course it's always the same form so I know what the form name and field names are. Is there some kind of way to interact with the web form similar to javascript where I can update the fields? Any information on this would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

I have a columnar type layout that I use to manage work orders for my cabinetshop. The initial formatting for all fields is black fonts with white fill patterns. If the value in PRIORITY field is set to "hot" I want all of the fields in the record to display in [color:red]Red Fonts and I want the fill patterns to remain white. If the value in STATUS field is equal to "In Process" I want the fonts to become black again but I want the fill patterns to become green. Hi, I'm trying to create a portal to display a list of jobs... I thought this would be easy since I've already created some more complicated portals in my solution. The layout I'm using is set to the Employees table. It has a few fields in it (Employee ID, Employee Name, etc.) I want the portal to display a list of all records from the Jobs table (Job ID, Job Name, Customer, etc.) This should be an easy one... how do I set this relationship up? I either read or heard (on a video) that you can paint multiple fields or labels by clicking on the paint icon and then holding the Crtl key down and bringing the cursor across the fields/labels you wish to format. Obviously I am wrong, because it doesn't work for me. How do you accomplish this? I am redoing all my layouts to a softer look and it requires painting 100's of labels and fields. I have a portal that can be filtered. Outside of this portal on the same layout I have three fields: Record Number, Found Set, and Total Records. So far I can calculate the last two numbers but can not work out how to calculate the first. Basically when a user clicks on a portal row I want the record number field to instantly display which record number in the found set is currently selected. I do not want to do this by attaching a script to the portal row because there are already other buttons in the portal row (namely GTRR) attached to certain icons. Does anyone know of a simple way to achieve this?

I could kick myself for this; I definitely know better. But I started fooling around with webviewer on a file without making a current backup first. Now I've broken the file. The solution is created using FileMaker native tab options. I added a webviewer on a subtab to show the location of a selected event and apparently I made a mistake when entering the address information. The file crashed as soon as I left layout mode for browse mode and now it won't even open. And the crash report, when I try to read it, flashes by in about 2 seconds. I have multiple True False tests some with over 400 questions. For the purposes of scoring them, I would like to be able to hit T or F (or 1 or 2) and then have the cursor automatically advance to the next item (i.e., field) without having to hit another key (i.e., tab or enter). I'm having trouble with FM 8.5, I have tabs set up (I hope!) correctly. When they are viewed in layout mode all the correct fields and objects appear in the correct tabs, however, when viewed in browse mode, all the fields from each tab appear in all the tabs, overlapping each other. I have tried starting over, deleting tabs, arrangements etc but nothing seems to work, it's very frustrating as in layout mode they seem fine, it's probably something very simple but I'm new to this!!! I'm working on a Ordering system. Orders must have a Type of "Sale", "Purchase", or "Transfer". I originally thought about going with three separate tables, one for each type, but there's a lot of overlap, so I think one is the answer. The three are different however, and I have a different entry layout for each. What I want to happen is for only the respective type to appear in the respective layout. So I'm scripting the navigation and got the Find process nailed down, but can't replicate Show All. Have a small Filemaker DB I made for a local club, nothing special, ID, Name, Address ect. They would like it setup so that a member can just enter their ID and Filemaker will keep a record of attendences, Name, Date, Time. What would be the correct way to setup Filemaker? Should I create a new layout with Name, Date & Time fields and have FM create a new record each time someone enters their ID or is there some way to create a list of attendences without FM creating a new record for each? I'm stuck here... I have a portal of quotes and need to copy / paste the quote number into another table that holds the lines. I can get it (via script) to go to the quote number field, then go into quote lines table and create a new line and paste the quote number. That way they show up in the portal (linked via relationship). I've read in here that using the clipboard isn't a good practice so I've been trying to change my ways and implement the variables... I have 3 tables - one for customers, one for appliances (that we sell), and one for quotes. This has got to be easy. I want to display the content of a field from the first SORTED portal row in the parent file. I need to display a related feild in a layout with a more specific query than just math feilds. Here's the scoop: It's a database of patients and professionals. Each patient has a relationship with several professionals for consultation, but each patient also has a unique relationship with just one professional, their "attending physician". I created three tables. I put a popup value list related to the third table. Sometimes it works. Sometimes it doesn't. Sometimes it shows actual data. Sometimes it shows weird data. Sometimes at the end of the portal row, no new, blank row is added below. It is late and I am going bonkers over this!! I have set up this test database to try to have a conditional value list of zip codes so that when I enter City I go to States and the choices are reduced only to those states where there are corresponding cities and then when I go to zip codes only those zip code(s) are a choice. I have played with this for hours and hours and this is the best I could do. It works, I think, but, I'm concerned with the relationships and how I have them set up. hi, I'm trying to input hebrew into a field. except for that the marker is staying at the begining of the line all the time, when I try to use anything else besides letters and numbers, it is showing it at the begining of the line unless I print a letter afterwards. For example if I try to end a sentence with "." then I would get "דוגמא." For those of you who don't read hebrew, the dot should be on the other side, and yes, the fields are alligned to the right. Any suggestions?

I am investigating how to design my printing page layout to mimic security paper (nothing seen on the printed page but "VOID" or other symbol when the page is copies). Under the magnifying glass security paper and background hash marks in one direction and "VOID" written with hash marks in another direction but the same gray as the background. I am helping a friend with a small business. I have created a basic, single table, membership application but it needs to be modified periodically. It is not convenient for me to make the modifications on the "production" database. What I would like to do is get a copy of the "production" FileMaker database, make the modifications and then import only my non-data changes (layouts, scripts, etc.) back into the "production" database. I know I can import scripts, but what about layouts or schema changes? In other words, is there a way (without using FileMaker Pro Advanced) to perform normal developer enhancement functions?

I have a database of products which has a sub class identifier. I also have a bunch of safety warnings in value lists. What I would like to do is to have certain warnings from the lists activated based on it's sub class identifier. ie. subclass =210 value list 1= wear gloves active (rest inactive) value list 2= explosive rest inactive) value list 3 = do not use in confined spaces etc.rest inactive) I'm not sure how i should even start... Please forgive me if this is a dumb question. I am merely the brightest bulb in a rather dark coalmine! Oh, and we only have FMP 5.5. I have a simple application and want to prompt a user with a value list that is a combination of two fields from two different files. I want to create a custom menu for a Runtime App. But I want to see some of the stuff I take out when I'm editing or using the database in Filemaker? For example, I want to take away the Scripts Menu and the possibility of people looking at or using scripts outside of their database functions in the Runtime. I have to make a report where I need text in the header, showing on every page. No problem. In list view the records can go from 15 to 360+. I need text in a 'footer' part, but only showing on the last page (page setup is legal - landscape). The help file says: Title Footer: Appears only once at the bottom of the first screen or page.... I need it on the last page... I have now: layout in list view, Header with text and no fields. Body: fields from record (title) Footer: only text, but has to show up on the last page only.. I am rewriting this so that someone may understand what it is I am trying to do. I am a bowling tournament stats person. I have been asked to store tornaments for at least 150 bowlers. What I am trying to achieve is, when I create a new tournament, I would like all active bowlers only)to show up in the portal to speed up game entry. I would like thier first and last names, as well as the scratch, poa and games to show up in the portal. Hello All, It seems I will be spending lots of time with File Maker at my internship. As was requested of me, is there any way to get filemaker to kind of "sit on top" of a filestructure on the network drive here. I was thinking that I might somehow be able to have the webviewer function navigate to a directory on the local drive instead of to the www. This way I could see icons to say all the PDF's in a specific folder and as they were updated to that folder they would appear in File Maker instead of adding them to the folder and then opening filemaker and adding them one by one. We have an odd problem plaguing one of our databases. Out of the blue over 200 records have cleared themselves leaving empty fields in every field. However, if you do a search for a name whose record was cleared it finds it and takes you to the empty record. In FileMaker 8.5 all the fields are empty but in FM 9.0 they all have a question mark in them. Any ideas on what is going on here?

Hello, I hope I can explain this correctly. I have two tables, one with client information (name/number/etc) the other is a job ticket table. What I'd like to do is have the user pick a clients name from a value list in the job ticket table (that's related to the client name field in the client info table) and have the rest of the clients information auto populate in their different fields. Currently I have the relationship set up correctly between the client name lists on each table, but I don't know where to start to be able to pick a client name and have it auto fill the remaining fields on the job ticket table. I have a layout with a portal of records. Some of the portals have multiple records. What I want to do is when a user clicks on a portal row go to another layout and display the image associated to the portal row that was clicked. I am not good a portals and relationships. I attached a file that I have created as a sample. I was only able to keep one image in there are the upload requirements are so small on this site. Any help would be appreciated. "I've created a new db but it wont let me close the active window. It dosn't seem to be stuck in a script so I cant work out what it might be. Hi all... I've used this forum a lot as a resource in learning Filemaker, but this is the first time I haven't been able to resolve a question simply by searching. I'm using a webviewer in Filemaker 8/9 to utilize google's geomapping features: we take an address, use the google maps api to determine a latitude and longitude, and generate a map with a pinpoint and description at the address. This works fine under OS X, but under Windows none of the pinpoints show up. If I open up the url that the webviewer is using with Internet Explorer I get the same problem. I am stuck on how to get summary data into the charting process, whether the approach I use is via the charting database process or a plugin like xmChart. Specifically, I see how static values are used to generate the results, but I want to get summary data into the string. Say I have a sales results table with the following fields: Salesperson Sales Month Year Product Value Sum Value Calculated Summary Value by Salesperson and Month Year How can I get that summary value into the string so that charts are produced showing a particular salesperson’s performance? I've built a columnar reporting layout that has two sub-summary parts. The database collects data on pages printed by our staff. The first sub-summary presents "pages printed" and "cost" sub-totals for each different page size printed for a particular project during the given reporting period. The second sub-summary displays a total for ALL the pages printed and the total cost for each job. The report works fine EXCEPT, there are times when a page break happens between the two sub-summaries. I would like to prevent that. Does anyone know of a way to "group" two sub-summaries together so they won't break onto two different pages?

I have a field (called class) using a pop-up menu that is selected from a filed in another table and only uses related values from another table. The related value shows a subject, e.g English. When the user clicks in class they only see the 10 or so records from the related table (which has 100 records) which are pertinent to English. My problem is that the user is likely to want to do a search in the class field. if they do this, the pop-up shows no values defined. I need to be able to do a find from the currently selected records rather than from the whole set with the contents of the subject field retained for the search. Has to be possible....no?

Hello! This beginner is stuck! I set up a simple invoice layout, and wanted to insert a jpeg made in Photoshop for the company logo. Two things went wrong that I don't understand. 1. When I do "insert" "picture" the jpeg comes in about 20 times too big, despite the fact that the logo measures (in inches) slightly smaller than the field measues (in inches). I've tried just inserting the logo directly onto the header, and I've tried putting it in a field -- behaves the same both ways. Does anyone know what I can do to fix that? 2. I dragged the graphics handles until the logo was small enough, and thought it was weird but would be OK. Then I printed out a te…

I have a standardized layout template that I'm want to put current username on. When you look at the layout in browse mode, it shows in the field area, yet when I click on the field, shaazam, the username is displayed. Do I have to create a username field in any table where it's displayed on a layout? That seems like overkill.

Web Viewer can see all kinds of file formats and I think it would be helpful to explore this fully. For intance - you can display Quartz Composer documents such as screen savers. Quartz composer documents can have RSS feeds. So for instance you could subscribe to your own DDR and display it in a web viewer. You can view PDF, HTML, text, Quicktime, various image formats.. what else? I have a database (FMP 6) where I pull a number of fields together to get a layout for an envelope. I do this through a defined calculation field. The programming is: Title & "¶" & First Name & " " & Last Name & "¶" & Company & "¶" & Street 1 & "¶" & "¶" & Postal Code 1 & " " & City 1 & "¶" & Country 1 Now if there is no company I have a gap between the texts. Is there a way of avoiding this? Like having the text move up one line? Thanks

I have a conditional value list (one value list is filtered based on another value list) and was wondering how to enforce that a user ONLY choose the values in the list? For instance, I have 3 Types General Graduate Special Admit Under General, there are a handful of choices that are different from the choices that are under Graduate and so on. But a user can enter Misc instead of General and there is nothing for Misc since it’s not in the value list for types. Any way to not allow the users to enter in MISC or something they think? Hi Guys, Im creating a school registration system. I have created a list of records, and the teachers will see them in as list view. I have been asked from a user entry point of view that they owuld like to register the kids using keystrokes as this is much more convenient. Using the tabs, I would like to therefore tab down from one record to the next, is this possible. I know you can tab down, if you were in the same record, but I am proposing to jump from one child to the next for lets say monday morning. Cheers

Right now in my layout I have a "Sub-summary by STATUS (leading)." STATUS is the field for the values PENDING and PASS. So when I print, I have two nice sections of PENDING and PASS projects. Within those sections, the projects are sorted by date. How can I sort them by another field?--Say Alphabetically by author? AND since there are multiple projects by one author, how do I sort by date after that? In sum: I'd like to keep my sections of PENDING and PASS, and within those sections sort first by author, then by date submitted. Any help would be much appreciated! Thanks! David

While it would have saved me about 40 minutes of tinkering and resource scouring to know that calculations cannot be used in value lists, further tinkering resulted in using a text field with auto-enter options as a successful value list. In this case its just a first/last name concatenation used as a second field to a primary key value list. It seems to be working fine. Noob is happy, noob cannot foresee problems in future. Please correct noob if noob in danger. Is there any difference between an auto-enter calc and a calc field in terms of when they (re)evaluate?

I am having trouble figuring out how to allow a users to add a random number of pictures, audio, video, or misc files. I don’t know how many of these files there will be. Because of this I think that a solution on just putting a bunch of container fields does not work. For each set of media files there will be a text field. Two issues. One layout has this striped background. How do I make it white? Other layout with merge fields has all data showing in Browse, Layout and Preview, does not have merge showing fields in Find. Print set up as envelop#10 landscape. Here is the deal...I have been using filemaker for many years and feel that I am pretty proficient at using it, but I am lacking in the area of importing GIF's to my layouts. When I add them, via cut/paste or thru the insert menu, they appear jagged and dont have smooth edges. I know this is basic stuff for most of you guys, but can anyone help me solve this dilemma? I am trying to auto-populate a field in a new record using the value of that field from the previous related record. This field uses a value list from a related table. I also require that I can change the value in the new record without changing the value in related records. The "Value from last visited record" option will not work because, often, the last visited record is not a related record and the field auto-populates with the wrong value. Let me know if I need to clarify or elaborate. Thanks for the help.

Hi, I have a project table where I need to update a contact_id field (a foreign key to a contact table). This is easy with a dropdown list and a value list, but the problem is the contact table is in the thousands of records and therefore it's tedious to locate the one needed (specially when you only know a part of the name). One solution could be to build up a value list entering a part of the name of the contact on a text field, which then would filter the records that contain this string. I've been strugling with this without success, because all I tried involved calculations that could not be indexed. Anyone? I'd thank very much any help! Llorenc

Text fields in layouts seem to take a static width and height. But what if my text is variable in length and possibly in number of lines (the text has embedded newline characters)? Is there a way to have the text field adapt its size from one row to the next automatically? For instance, in an order I have many line items. Each line item's description may be more than some fixed number of characters, and may have some newlines in it for ease of reading complex descriptions. Yet on my order print-out layout, I can't accommodate this text since Filemaker wants a static-sized text box in the Body. Thanks for any Filemaker or third-party add-on ideas!

Hi I have a layout that is a 'Columnar list/report' using 'Grouped data'. The data shows correctly in Preview mode but only shows one record at a time in Browse mode although the subtotal value is correct. Any ideas. I have attached screen captures. Thanks

I've made a popup layout that list customers I have to recall - this is open from my main layout. When I click on their name in the list (I use go to layout to go to my main layout), it shows the correct records but in another instance of the main layout. How do I go to my main form showing the record I've chosen from the popup without more and more copies on my main layout opening. TIA
