    I am having huge frustrations with conditional value lists. I have a very good understanding of how to set up the relationship and how to get the value list to work. Here is my problem. I have a Attribute Index and I want to filter based on attribute type. This works fine (both browse and find mode) if the layout setup is based on the Attributes Table and I get the values from the Attribute Index. However, if you start to go a couple degrees up the relational ladder, it gets funky.     I'm trying to make a textfield combine the rows in a portal but don't get it to work properly. I'm working with FM6. A full description is below. Hope someone can help. I've made two simple databases to test the procedure. If it works I will implement something like it in a larger database. The databases are called 'Countries' and 'Hotels'.   3. I know there is nothing holding me back from adding more than one portal on a layout. However the database that I am working with is using one record for each layout. I am not sure I am even asking the right question, but how do I get the two(or more) portals on the same layout use the same data from 1 record? I can post screen grabs if needed. I am working on the interface portion of this project while another person is working on the backend functions. To make the project much easier to use I'd like to have multiple portals on the layout, while the backend developer is have issues with this. Any thoughts?

    I'm very new to FM7 & need help with my Value List. I have set up an inventory DB, I add new product through a purchase invoice by way of a portal. I have "Product ID", "Product Description" , "Product Cost" and Sales Catagory fields. The Sales Catagory field is based on a Value List called Sales Catagory which includes "Grocery", "Pop", "Confection" etc entered as a Custom Value List. My problem is, I need to sort & find the Total Product Cost of all the "Grocery" product, the "Pop" product, the "Confection" product etc. I also need to print this calculated information.   7. I have several portals arranged in a horizontal way (same relation). Each should show only one row and the first record to show is set to 1, 2, 3,... . On a Mac the result is a horizontal portal showing me all the records 1, 2, 3,... of the given relation. On windows I always get an additional record showing outside the portal bounds. In the first portal I get record 1 and record 2 as a "ghost". In the second portal I see record 2 (and 3 as "ghost"),… Is this a known bug of FM 8v2?     I have a database of publications to which materials need to be sent on different dates. The main table is the list of publications; the child table is the dates on which items were sent; the matchfield is a serial number. The main table shows the publication name and address at top, with other specification fields, e.g. Fashion, Major Daily etc.).     hello, I am creating a layout using an Avery template. With multiple fields to each record is there a way for me to have displayed/printed out onto a single or continous sheets of all those different fields but under the same record with the same info? Specifically under the avery label template layout I have 3 fields: Name of person, Company, Address . . . . . but with more than one name to each compnay I'm not sure how I can go about doing this. Anybody here get what I'm trying to do here? Seems like it could be a simple solution. -brian

    Is there a way to make a portal "auto adjust" to the number of records contained in it? I've got a report that is viewed as a list and is in one table, but displaying records, via a portal, from another table. There's an obvious problem in that when I print, if the portal only has 3 rows and there are 4 records, one record does not print. I've discovered no obvious solution. Making the portal 20 rows deep would be a waste of paper, considering each portal generally only has 1-5 records (but occationally, there are 20!). Does anyone have a creative way of dealing with this? Thanks much!

A poor little girl hasta sit with my laptop and enter 5,000 comment cards into this DB: 5 fields of Excellent, Good, Fair, Poor, or NA.     I'm developing a solution to be used by both WinXP and OSX users. I have begun inserting graphics (buttons and the like) using the jpeg format through photoshop in WinXP. However, when I open my database in OSX the graphics do not display at all. (I get the windows logo where the graphics should be) How should I be inserting graphics in to my solution to ensure cross platform compatability? Do I have to make 2 different versions?     I was wondering how it works with the creation of records through a portal. I have this set up in one instance where a invoice records are created though a portal by just entering information in the fields of the portal. When I tried to do this between two different tables I could not create records through the portal. I poked around to find something like "check here to enable the creation of new records" but could not find this. My organization sends students out to different sites to receive different types of training (TrainType). Where The TrainType is = "Nutritional Counseling" (for example), I can match up Students:studentID = TrainingSession:studentID AND TrainingSession:TrainType = k_NutritionalCounseling (k_NutritionalCounseling is just a text calculation = "Nutritional Counseling").     Ok, somewhere along my development line I read that if you have multiple telephone numbers for your contacts (these days don't we all?)you should set up a separate table for Telephone Numbers. I also incorporated a Telephone Format custom function as well. Problem is custom function format doesn't accomodate international numbers. So, I set up a separate field for International numbers. My regular numbers are in a portal. Here's what I would like to do: Find a new custom Function that accomodates Intl as well as domestic numbers.     I have created pop-up windows with scripted user abort off/hide status area/pause. This works fine. Users cannot do anything until they click one of the buttons on the pop-up. The close box is not active. However, the resize box is active, so the user can monkey with the size of the window. Is there some way I can disable this? Also, I've had a user request to "dim" or gray-out the close box since it isn't useable. Is there anyway to customize title bars? Thanks for any advise!

So I am going to post my question (and it may appear a no-brainer to some)... but I would truly appreciate some clear direction. Tabs-- I have multi tables and would like to create 1 layout for data entry for a person.   23. I have a Companies table layout that has a portal for Contacts. This portal only shows one contact at a time with the scroll bar activated to enable scrolling to more contacts. A second portal on this layout lists the last names of the contacts that are entered in the Contacts portal. I want to be able to click the last name of the contact in the 2nd portal and have it display the correct contact information in the Contacts portal.     I a many to many relationship with three tables, students, courses and registration. A portal in the courses table enters the registred students for every course with the help of a student ID Value list. I want to be able to filter the value list by the first letter of the last name, so I creat a calculation field that does this on the students table and a global key on the courses table.     I have searched and tried all the things that make sense and know the solution will be easy ... but alas it eludes this beginner. In a portal I want a button that takes record data from the parent and inserts into that portal row. Kind of a 'same as' option when user is entering data. I have the button working but only on the first portal line, regardless which row the button is. I know I need to somehow check which portal line (get portal row) I am on, then do the work on that line but I don't know how to get that data into my script ... how do I do this?     Hi, I've been asked to continue working on someone else's medical database. I'm just wanting to tidy up a couple of appearance issues on the main layout. There is a field called Eye Disease which sources from a value list (using checkbox) of several eye diseases. One of the values is: PDF(Prolif Diabetic Retinopathy) I wanted to change it to: PDF (Prolif Diabetic Retinopathy) That is, simply insert a space bewteen the 'F' and the '(' to keep the same spacing with other bracketed values.     I have two tables (contact and group) with at least two fields in each: group and sub-group. I would simply like to press on the down button on a layout on the group and sub-group fields connected to my contact table to select the group and sub-group data from the Group table. Not sure i need a relationship betweeen the two tables but if I did, I am not sure what fields to tie them together with. NOTE: Group and sub-group data always is entered in the Group table since it is the source. All other tables would retrieve data from this table. thanks in advance.

    I have a strange problem. I have a series of fields that are calculated results via a case statement for a field called trans_descrip. Well it turns out there was some odd data in trans_descrip that was throwing off the case evaluation, so I cleaned up trans_descrip using a series of evaluations and replacements. Now, all for all the trans_descrips I replaced the calculated fields will not re-evaluate. If I go into each of those trans_descrip fields and add a space or delete and re-add the last character the calc fields re-evaluate. Very puzzling to me.   36. A slip in good development practices forced me to go to resort to my FM7 runtime file as continuing point for development. It had custom About, Scripts and Help menu items. Is there any way to restore the Filemaker defaults? Also, does the fact that these were modified at one point rule out renaming them in a new Custom Menu Set?

    Heads up folks. Recently I did some work in FM7. Basically I had scripted entry in to the fields in a portal to allow editing of existing data but prevent new records to be entered at the bottom of the portal. (New entries were handled in a different way to ensure data integrity and the relationship had to support creation in the related table) The script tested the current row against the LAST value for the relationship to allow/disallow editing. Then I ran it in FM8... Each time I clicked on the fields the script would exit against the test.   38. I have several variations of conditional value lists that work fine in browse mode (fm8.02) However, they do not work in find mode. The simplest one I have is this: I want to isolate class agents in my people database. I check a text field for "class agent". (indexed). I create a calculation called zClass Agent that is a text calculation with the words "Class Agent". I make a TO to filter these values and voila. I get a filtered list of just my class agents. However, you can't search on it in find mode. Is this a common problem in fm8.02 or am I missing some big lightbulb with filtering?

I have a "bookings" portal on the main "patients" page and i wish to do a find on this portal to look for any bookings that have not been invoiced, but only those relevant to that patient. I can make this happen in a separate layout no problem (try the show uninvoiced bookings on bookings layout script) but can't work out how to do this within the "bookings" portal on the "patients" layout.   43. I have a portal set up to track multiple presentation sessions by individual speakers (each record contains one speaker with the related presentations in a portal). What I need is to combine the session names from multiple portal rows into one field for printing purposes. The 'hires' table contains records which link stock items to events, i.e. each record has a stockID and an eventID field.     O.K., I've figured out (finally -- on a 4th pass of the layout wizard) how to make my report group properly. MY REMAINING ISSUE is how to get the listed items to be separated by commas across the page -- rather than printed in vertical columns. In the accompanying database, the word “Clear” would show all synonyms separated by commas: Clear -- Bright, Transparent, Lucent, < . . . and so on> I've turned on the Slide Field option to no avail.     I can't believe I'm entering this! My customer wants a list of customers sorted on contact name. No big deal. He wants those without a contact name to be last in the sort sequence. No matter what I do, I can't get them to sort with blank contact names last. I thought empty might be a problem so put spaces in the empty ones. I've set up a special Value List with the 'normal' alpha sequence and finishing with a " ". The " " still sorts first. I don't really want to put in an additinal calc field but that's beginning to look like the only option. Any clues?

  48. Hello, I have 2 new fields in an invoicing table that have been defined. I have an invoicing portal in my main layout, and I would like to add these two new fields to the portal, so that it doesn't mess up the existing portal setup. The only thing I can find that seems close is in the "Format -> Portal..." dialogue window. But, this only gives me the "sort fields" option, which I'm afraid to do, because I don't really want to sort anything....just add these two fields is all. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.     Hi, I can't seem to be able to have a portal within a tab where the layout is based on table occurrence 'widgets' and the portal is also based on 'widgets'.     Is there any possible way to keep FileMaker from placing the black outline around a text field when it's selected by the user for editing -- or maybe change the color of the line? Turning off Show Text/Field Boundaries doesn't work, nor does placing the field behind a white line frame. I'm starting to believe the answer is "no", but I thought I would ask before I abandon the idea.

    My layout contains a rectangle which surrounds a group of fields: [Name] [Company] [Address1] [Address2] [City] [state] [Zip] Company and Address 2 may be blank. I want the rectangle to slide upward, along with the fields it contains, but I don't want the fields within it to slide relative to one another.     I've inherited a wonderfully complicated database that I'm trying to patch. I have some summary fields for the entire Breeding table that are supposed to display in Colony. Due to the sort order for some other content on the layout, the first record in Colony does not have a matching record in Breeding. As a result, the summary fields for Breeding are blank. How do I setup my layout so that the summary fields are not blank? Or is it even possible...?

  55. Hi, I currently have a portal that is pulling sample text from other records. Unfortunately, the number of records it pulls from and the amount of text it needs to show varies. This results in the sample text being cut off, or not show in the size portal I have. When printing these reports, there's lots of empty space to account for all the variations. I thought a solution would be to have a field pull all the contents of the portal into one text field that I could then set to slide. I assume it's like a calc field, but don't know how to properly write the script to achieve this. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks! -wing

    Hello all I'm trying to imitate the replace function in a portal. I used to have a pop-up menu so everybody is used to just choose a value and replace it in the current found set. Now that field is a portal, because I need it to hold more than one value. How would I set a selected list of records to one specific value in a portal? The problem is, that maybe some of the records already have that value. The script should just add the value to those records that don't have it yet. If you have an idea, please let me know.

  59. Ok, here's the scoop: I'm trying to create a dynamic portion to my DB for what will eventually be implemented on the web. Basically I will have a series of drop-down menus where the value list of the second drop down menu is contingent on what is selected in the first value. So I imagine I will use the Case function... Case(Short_ID="JAZZ"; result is Jazz subcategories appearing in the Subcategory Drop-down list; Short_ID="BLUS"; result is blues subcategories appearing in the same Subcategory Drop-down list... and so on. Does this make sense? is it even possible? Thanks for your help, this exceeds my filemaker knowledge.

  60. I have made a value list to use on a field where the user selects an ID number (the PK for a related table). The value list is set up to contain values from a field. This works fine. I have 400 records, and the value list has 400 items. This is good, except the user has no idea what ID number is associated with which name. So I have also displayed values from a secind field (the name field). This still works fine, except there are 400 items in the list, so it would be nice to sort them alphabetically by last name.     I would like to know if there is a way to manually insert forced page breaks like those that can be inserted when using MS Word. I have a layout with a header and title header. the little dotted lines that are supposed to represent the page are severly skewed when those two parts are added. I have to flip back and forth between Layout and Preview modes and move the fields up and down and it is getting very annoying and slow. It's also very tiring to finally get the fields on the right page only to have the top margins vary from page to page. I am not opposed to a work around but I don't want it visible to the end user. Any help would be appreciated!!

I’d like each Language field popup to offer a list of common values (e.g., Spanish, English, French…Other) that will grow when “Other” is selected and new language choices are added.     I am using FMP Advanced 8 v 2. I created a company database, and included a purchase order function. The purchase order page has a portal to a purchase order items table. We imported our list of items from quickbooks, since we are now using the filemaker database. However, a number of the quickbooks items have descriptions which are too long for the portal window. I wish the program would text wrap, but it appears it won't. If I make the field big enough to fit all the text, then all the fields become the same size in the portal, and it becomes too large to print.     Hello, I have a database of abut 4800 radio programs and 3000 radio stations. I am trying to do a drop-down menu of the programs, however FM8 is condensing it and only showing the first show by that name. For example, "Morning Show", FM is only showing Morning Show for KCTX-FM even though a show by that same name is also on 10 other stations in the US and in my database. How can I stop it from doing this?   71. I wanted to add a conditional value list then a lookup to my database, but I have thus far been unable to get it to work. Here is the concept: I have a category value list. After selecting the category, a relational value list is used for the item. I then want a lookup used for description and unit price. However, the lookup happens as soon as I seect the category. I created a layout with one sub-summary part containing the standard fields "Staff" and "Hours Worked". The sub-summary part is set to sort by "Staff". I've a database of crew members, say three fields, type (clients, staff, or contract) Positions (what possition will they hold as a client, staff or contract person) and name. When setting tab order on a layout, I used to always leave out a few numbers in case of errors or subsequent additions. Now, with V8, I leave out the numbers and FMP just re-numbers them from 1. It is driving me crazy. Anyone know how I can FIX my numbers?

    How can I show the window name in the header of the page? I tried to set up a global calc field using Get(windowname) as the calc, but it shows whatever the first windowname is but not the current window. What I am trying to accomplish is have the Window Name>layout name in the header so I don't need to look at the top bar. I find that when I'm navigating all over I wind up with multiple pages open which tends to get very messy. Any suggestions? TIA, Al

    I have a 350-seat performance space. For each performance we ask our patrons to give their Zip/Postal Codes at the door when they enter. I need to keep a record of each performance and number of each Zip Code recorded. Most fall in the range of the 40-or so Zip Codes in our metropolitan area, but some happen to come, at random, from Zips we have never recorded before, perhaps from outside the state.   86. Hello - I have a repeating field of 10 values defined in a file, but on the data entry layout, I have only room enough to display maybe 2 of the values from the field. I thought that the user could just enter values and hit tab or Enter to keep adding repetitions, but it looks like you can only enter two values if only 2 reps are displayed. The field doesn't expand for entry, at least, not as far as I can see. Am I missing something that turns this on, or is it not possible? I'm thinking of something similar to what happens when you type beyond the bounds of a text entry field... it expands so that you can keep entering data. Thanks, Jeff

    I am creating an inventory list. There is a list of objects, their storage location and a notes section - all in a single horizontal line. I added a container field beneath the notes section so that I can insert a photo of certain items. Is there a way to make a container field recognize when it's empty so that it will slide up?     I am constantly trying to find a webding or wingding to use (and sometimes other fonts). I have been using them for graphics (they are very resource-efficient). I want the results of each key-combination viewable on one layout (or each font on a separate layout) telling me the key-combination of each. Once I select a font picture, I want to be able to apply colors to it. I already have a ColorCode demo (of Comment's) in place. I figured out how to see the next record (person's name) in a found set and the previous person's name.     I know this is a bit of a vague question, but is it possible to have filemaker generate layouts based on scripts? The reason I ask is because I want to create a table called "preferences", and have the ability to turn certain elements on or off. On a related note, is it possible to have a layout reference/include another layout? The best way I can think to explain this, is that, with mediawiki for example, you can create "template" pages which can then be included as part of other pages. This would also be handy for having a boilerplate header/footer.

    Odd problem. I have a list of thirty or so teacher names. When filling out report cards, the teachers select their name and are automatically taken to their class lists. A few times over the past week-- say 4 or 5 times-- the value list has spontaneously changed. Visually it's the same, but when a teacher selects her name, she gets no matching students, even though the student lists show her name in the teacher field. Further investigation revealed that on the value list the name now has an invisible character padded onto the end of the name, so "Ms. Smith" has now become "Ms. Smith ", and a match doesn't occur.     Is there a way to allow the user to copy a text box with merge fields so they can easily paste it in another application? Now, I know that I can create a calculation field and arrange these fields however I like and that would solve my problem. However, there's thousands of ways that you could want to format names, dates, phone numbers, addresses and creating fields for each way seems like it would quickly get confusing.     I have a database for my work where i store data for appointments. I have a option where people are either "Renting", "Paying Mortgage" or "Own Home". Also a bit down the page there are other options if they are renting, for example if they are renting i need to find out household debt and deposit. What i was wondering was if there was a way of making so that; If radio box "Living status" = "Renting" then the other radio boxes (Household debt and deposit) are enable, else they are disable and grayed out so they cant be clicked.     Is there a way to specify a Default Menu set based on a privalege set? I would like to a user to always get a menu set based on their original login. The only way I can see to to that is to include it in all the navigation scripts (ie, go to a layout, then change menu set). This seems burdensom. I would like to have something that would set a default menu set for each user type, then I can just assign the use file default menu set for each layout. I just don't see it. Is this possible in FM8 or do I have to manually change all my layout scripts? TIA jerry

I have a couple of pages on my database that are accessible through many routes, and I want to be able to make a button that will take the user back to the layout that got them there.
