Hello, I'm about to install 10.5 on all our PC's and have run into the Leopard/FMS9 hitch. For the meantime I would like to keep our old server intact, running Server8. Can I install FMP9 on my clients, assuming no changes will be made to scripts which could be version dependant. Thanks.

Hi, I just uploaded a new database to our filemaker server, but multiple users cannot modify it at the same time... Multiple people can log in, but they will receive a warning saying another user s currently modifying the file. I created accounts and had the database automatically sign users in as the restricted account ("staff")... I changed the file's group to "fmsadmin". Is there anything else I'm missing?

I am setting up a virtual server for FMSA. I plan to be running and handful of relatively small databases serving to about 10 users. I am wondering how much HDD space I will need. The sys reqs for FMSA say 80Gb. Is this not too much? Can I get away with less? Thanks!

I am running v9 adv server on win 2003 std sp2 and i am having some recent (today) problems. Sorry for length... I was doing some data entry in a database hosted on my server. I got caught in a field level validation that would not let me gracefully exit so i terminate the FileMaker Pro.exe file on the client side via task manager. I started to receive automatic emails that server authentication was failing yet the databases were all still completely available from clients. I thought that closing close all the database files on the server and reopening them to force the consistency check would reveal any file problems. I remote desktop into server and I could not acce…

Hi, We want to change existing FM7 Server system into FM9. But the harware specifications is not met the requiremnents. In current system, FM7S on G4 quick silver and FM7SA on x-serve (g4). x-serve is used for web publishing, and g4 quick silver is used for local fm sharing (over 15 machines) for FM9S g5 or intel recomended. may be i change g4 quick silver to mac pro but i dont want to replace x-serve with huge and expensive macpro. mac-mini is enough for filemaker hosting issues?? anyone is used mac-mini for server purpose. an other issue is licensing. server 9 is a bit changed. i dont need server advanced any more. could i install one copy of fi…

I'm hoping that I'm missing something, but it appears that it is no longer possible since 9 to have a configuration where the Web Publishing Engine can communicate with 2 FileMaker Servers so long as both database servers had the same WPE password. (I realize version 9 no longer uses WPE passwords, but pointing out how is was possible in version 8) I have a database on 1 FileMaker Server that has related data on different FileMaker Server. I used to be able to use IWP to publish the database on Server #1, and even though some of the data was on a different server, it would still work properly. I cannot get version 9 to function this way. Is this true or am …

Hi, I would like to know if these are the correct steps when the server is shuting down: "C:Program Files (x86)FileMakerFileMaker Serverfmsadmin" close -m "Please save your data. The server will shutdown. This is an unplanned shutdown. Please warn the db manager." "C:Program Files (x86)FileMakerFileMaker Serverfmsadmin" stop this is a shutdown script that will run under Windows 2003. Why this? Because the fms is on a windows 2003 VPS and sometimes, but rarely, the VPS is restarting without warning... Thanks for any advice NB

Hi everyone. I have limited experience with FM7 and am looking for a solution for the printing company I have just joined as general manager. I have built a very basic system in the past but am looking for a bit more. I would need it to provide quotes, convert them to jobs, track it through several stages of production, produce delivery notes and other supporting documentation and finally provide invoice data to send to the parent company in some shape or form. I require approximately 6 users and can hold it on a server. Some of the Filemaker own solutions seem a little over complicated for my purposes. Can anyone suggest an 'off the shelf' solution that may be…

Hi, i am try to get a information about the Server side calculation in FMS 9. In FMS8 and FM8 v1 we had a server side calculation for not stored sum () fields. This was fast... Finally I have found an "incompatibility?" between admin console (java application) and XP sp2 when you use Spanish Language. So, in order to start the admin console I have followed those steps: 1 - I made an uninstallation of Java enviroment (all versions that we found on server machines that had the same problem with admin console - may be this steep it´s not absolutely necessary) 2 - Then I changed the XP language to English (united states). However IT´S NOT NECESSARY to change the keyboard language which is an important key for users who has a password which uses typical spanish characters. 3 - I made a clear java installation downloading installer…

Hi, I currently have a runtime FM program for routing to serial ports, now I'm trying to convert it to serve it on FM server so it can be integrated with my main customer database! The problem is that e.g. users can load a preset which will replace fields in RZ_next_route, the problem is that if user 1 does this, it reflects to user 2 and user 2 gets to see a route he's never seen before. Now I'm wondering if there is a better way of doing this? E.g. being able to lock / unlock the file? Robin

I know the server will make an automated backup of the db...and that goes to the same folder each time (or have I missed something about making daily backups). So, if you have a bad db then you are backing up the bad db. I have wondered if there was a way to make a "Daily" backup to different folders. [color:green]I was searchin the Internet and found this: I am trying to script a backup for a file. If(Day of Week = 2, backup to folder Monday, If(Day of Week = 4, backup to folder Wednesday, After writing these steps, when I look at the Monday step, it is set to save to Wednesday; it apparently doesn't save the folder name to save to. I something…

We have a workgroup with FMP9 installed, all with unique license keys, on a mix of boxes running Mac OS X Tiger. All of them (bar one which would require a separate post) run FMP9 with no problem - for local (on same HD) databases. However, when attempting to connect to files hosted on FMSA8.0.4 over the LAN, several of them report a "License key conflict with user FMServer". It does not appear to be a problem with the databases as this occurs even with an unaltered version of one of the FMP9 sample files. The main thing these problem machines have in common is that FMP9 was installed under a different OS X user account than the one which is attempting to use it…

I am wondering if anyone else has come across this problem. I've installed FMSA 9 having already had PHP 5.2.2 installed so set the installation to use the existing PHP installation. The PHP test.php page works fine when I open a web browser and type in: http://localhost/test.php However when I try to run the Test PHP Custom Web Publishing page all I get is a blank page. The path to the phptest.php appears to be correct otherwise I would get a 404 error: page not found. I have since updated to FMSA 9.0v2 which hasn't resolved the issue. Also I tried the Edit Server Deployment link which effectively reinstalls the web publishing engine which didn't work…

Was thinking about purchasing a volume 10-pack of FMP 9s upgrade to standardize our network. We have only 7 clients active, and could go to 8. In researching I realized that FMP 9 will host 9 clients rather than the 5 clients last time I looked. I currently use Server 8 to host these 7. Are there any disadvantages to using a dedicated machine to run FMP 9 and host the 7 others as compared to Server 8. Is there something not obvious to me? Also, I cannot find any "rules" on using the 10-pack volume license for one user with both a desktop and portable - does this count as one or two? Specifics: 1. 5 clients on Win XP and 2 on Vista. Host would be on …

Hi, FMS 9 on win XP, serves 2 databases currently these are accessed via a windows terminal server running FMP9. Still in test phase, so no clients logged in. Performance seems ok generally, but in layout mode, some things slow to a crawl. click select a field then click delselect that field (i.e. click on layout background), takes 25 seconds to refresh/deselect. Dragging a field 2 cms takes in excess of 2 mins. Working in the Relationship graph, is similarly impossible. Have upped the FMS RAM allocation to 2GB, and additioanly reset the cache to 256MB, with largely imperceptible change. The TS has 1.17 GB RAM Any thoughts on this?

I am fairly new to FMS 9 and I have a problem directly after installing the server. The installation launches the pre-launch web page, but I never get past that page on one of my customers. They have MS 2003 server and firefox 2.x installed, Java version is 6.X. Am I missing something? I have never installed with firefox as default browser and it usually works fine with IE7 (wich the customer wont install "to much crap in c:" - he's prob right...) At first Firefox was not installed so the system tried with IE6 - not working of course - he then installed firefox 2. Anyone familiar with this problem? Thanks! /Tomas

Howdy ppls, Im a newbie at filemaker and i got a question for you. We backup our entire server using Symantec Veritas. will that safely backup the file maker database? or will it come up as corrupt if we reload our image? Im slightly confused because to my knowledge the filemaker database is a fully live database and backups of these type of databases are volatile when it comes to copying or backing up without proper proceedure. can anyone give me guidance on what i should do? Many thanks. Huy.

I got this off the FM site: Supports sharing amongst FileMaker Pro 7, 8, 8.5 and 9 clients I assume it will host the 8.5 db's ok but Im not 100% sure. Thanks, James

I have a database that is installed on web based server in California. (My cabinetshop is in Washington State) I make extensive use of columnar type list layouts. I use these to post and monitor status of work orders. This database is accessible from several locations. The work orders are posted then accessed via scripted start & stop buttons. The scripts all terminate with a Commit Records/Requests statement. I do this to make sure nobody can inadvertantly leave a record open & preclude others from acting on that record. I am having a problem sometimes getting the screens to refresh on all of the client stations. I can, for example, delete …

However, if I run the same script from the script menu in 9, it runs as quick as it did in 7. If anyone has any ideas as to why this is happening, I would be grateful.

I have an online FMSA 8 XSL form and I was wondering if it is possible, depending on the user that logs in, to only show certain input fields? So if the admin logs in, then the form will show all input fields, however, if user "jsmith" logs in, it will only show the fields "jsmith" is allowed to input? Will I need to set the permission at the database level under the "Accounts & Privileges" section or can I control the authorization from the XSL page? Is this something that can only be done with FMSA9 and PHP?

Hi, I've got a third-party app running on FMS 5.5. I am trying to receive an ADT (HL7) feed from a Hospital using Siemens OpenLink, we're a Anatomic Pathology lab. The files I receive are "grayed out" when I try to open with the client to import into FMS 5.5. I can open in a text editor, but nothing ive done so far will allow FM to open these files. Text encoding? Not something i can do with a text file? What would i need to convert it to, to open. The Siemens system is running on an AS400? I think? File permissions are wide open BTW. Any direction would make my day! Thanks in advance ;)

Any tips for improving performance over WAN? I have a database which opens in about 1-2 seconds on a LAN, but takes 40 seconds or so over a WAN, even after I removed most of the startup scripts that could access data or go to layouts with big graphics. I've done some testing with a big file and small file, and it seems like FMS is loading the entire file's layout structure before opening it. Since this database has a lot of unused crud in it (test layouts, unused layouts, old versions etc.). "Save as clone" gives a file size of about 6MB with no data. I'm wondering if I would get a speed boost if I cut out the unused layouts. Or.. am I misguided my theory…

I'm sure I'm in good company with this, but the limitations of SASE to only Web Compatible script steps makes the bulk of its utility for me worthless. I was talking with another in-house developer and he suggested setting up a dedicated machine that would run one continuously looping script that would pause for 24 hours and execute itself once a day, or whatever intervals we choose. Does anyone see a problem with this or have any other ideas of a way to automate some of the non-compatible script steps, such as Import/Export and Send Mail? Thanks for any help folks.

We use the sepiration model and what I'd like to do is delete the inferface file and replace it with a new interface file. Milo

Perhaps it's my (mis)understanding of how an opener file should work or needs to be configured, so allow me to explain what we do now that brings up the warning and quits fm: Have distributed a simple opener file to five users matching our five user license limit for FM 8.5 on Mac. The users are to keep this file on their desktop or dock on their mac. To open a database running on the FM Server they double-click their desktop opener which merely runs a script to open a simple "Menu" database hosted remotely on FM Server then closes. This all appears to work fine. The menu db, hosted on fm server, is just buttons with scripts to open a variety of other databases…

Hello, This morning I went to remotely open a FileMaker database from our server and got the following message upon trying to open the database itself... "The maximum number of licensed users are currently using this copy of FileMaker Pro.... License Key conflict occurrued with user "Myself". I don't know how, but it looks like I'm causing licensing conflicts with myself. Say for example my machine was named "Zach HD", any changes I make to the name also reflect in the license key conflict line of the message I'm getting. We're also supposed to have an unlimited license for FileMaker Pro. Any suggestions? Thanks!

Ive been using Filemaker server 8 to host files to users over a local area network for some time with no problems. I have recently come to want to access these files from home when I'm not at work but am having a heck of a time getting it to work or finding any helpful info. If I'm on the local network in the office and go to open remote put in the local network addy 192.168.0... I can access the files fine but if I go to open remote and to favorite hosts and put in the IP addy no files show up. Im behind a router and the IP address is not static. I have 5003 open and Im lost as to what is needed to set this up. At first I was thinking I needed to have Server Advanced to…

I just got an alarming call from my IT guy that FM Server Advanced (running on Windows) was not running -- when restarted, none of the hosted databases were even visible in the admin panel. What could be going on? How do we get the databases back? (I know I need to provide everyone with more info, but I'm wondering if anyone has any ideas or experience with this.)

Hi, Can someone tell me what I'm doing wrong? I'm using FMS 8. I want the server to make a daily backup of the databases. The problem is with the backup folder. When I want to validate the target folder, it says that it is "Not a valid path". The path is: filewin://BackupSvr/FMDB I don't want to reboot the FM Server. What is wrong with that path?

Is there a way to change the port that Web Publshing Engine listens to as it serves a FM database? Network/server issues internally here have forced me to install the Web Publishing Engine and FM Web Server modules on a different machine than the FM datbase (FM Server 8.0v4). I have an XServe that is hosting FM Server. The issue i'm facing now is that i need to port-forward incoming web traffic to the box running WPE. The default WPE port is 80. But i have a web server running on the XServe which also is looking for web traffic on port 80. If I could change the port that WPE listens to (591 for instance), I could configure my router to forward traffic for 591 t…

My problem is: I am trying to learn RM. I have FM 9 loaded on my machine WinXP. I have FM 8.5 or 9 I don’t know which on the server. When you open FM and go to “File” it lists “Open Remote” where is a “Remote” File saved, and can it be copied to my “C” drive. I am assuming “Remote” are the shared files. If not what is it? I’ve noticed I can save any new Database I create to my “C” drive but I can’t seem t find out how to save to “C” a Database I loaded from “Remote” and How do I save to “Remote”? Thanks The Tramp

Hi gang, This may seem like a dumb question, but am I correct in assuming that in order to receive email notifications on schedules that the server has to be setup with an email program of it's own and doesn't use any built in one from FM Server? I am trying to set up my SMTP and it's failing the test. I am using FM Server 9 Thanks Mike

For some reason typing http://localhost:16000 results in an error - "can't connect to server". Running Apache on OSX Tiger. Was fine before I used the PHP Site Assistant (which is working incidentally). I used Network Utility to check Port numbers 16000 and 16001 - neither were open. How do I open them/sort this out please?

The Database: Originally written (preMe) in 3 upgraded by me to 5 and started running it via FM Server. For many years I'd make changes to Layouts and Scripts "live" during the day on the active files. I had a window each week when all would be kept out so I could make or edit fields. All was well in the world. This summer we took these 44files and upped them to 8.5. Some bugs, but all seems OK. Here's my question. I discovered that I can get into Database Design while live on the server and make changes to fields, relationships.... Is this a bad thing? Because I can, doesn't mean it's good for me.

I just upgraded to FMSA9, and now I'm trying to figure out how to get our one XSLT page to work. Our web server is a separate machine running OS X Server 10.3.9. I think this was previously set up using the two-machine (alternate) deployment configuration, with the Database Server and the Web Publishing engine on the FileMaker Server box, and the "Web Server" module installed with the web server machine. So to do the same deployment configuration with FMSA9, will I need to upgrade the web server machine to OS X Server 10.4.x to get the "web server" module installed? I'd hate to have to buy OS X Server 10.4 at this late stage of it's life cycle, since Leopard is co…

I have a few problems with Filemaker that I haven't found a solution for - and neither can the Filemaker support. We use Filemaker Server 7 Advanced for filesharing. The problems are: 1) If I do a restart of my computer I can't use Filemaker again that day. I get an error message: "The maximum number of licensed users are currently using this copy of Filemaker Pro.... Licence Key conflict occured with user xxx". That is my own machine. I have to wait approximately one day before I can start the program again. 2) We have one file that is shared on the web by approximately 25 people. I use Filemaker Pro 8 advanced on the same file. I'm running FM Server 9 on a Windows 2003 SBS SP2 machine. (Yes, I realize that SBS is not a supported operating system, but that's what I'm using and it's not going to be changing any time soon.) I'm currently hosting only two small databases. I have FM server set to back up these databases every hour during the business day. Does anyone have any idea what this Error 642 is? I searched here and in FM's database but couldn't find anything. ------------------------------…

After installation of filemaker server 9 on a windows 2003 server, i am not able to use the supplement directory option to include a different location to place the filemaker databases files. Problem using a different directory then the default one to place the databases on a filemaker server. The directory got a good validation from the filemaker server validation. This different directory appear in the Database list, except that the filemaker databases that are into this directory did not appear under like the ones into the default directory (In an arborescence way). Beware -- I'm able to reliably crash my FMSA9v2 server (Mac OS X 10.4.10) using an unregistered demo version of the mail.it plugin (3.0.14.88), by calling it from a Server-scheduled script. I suspect the crash is happening when the plugin tries to put up an "unregistered" dialog. Question -- does this plugin work on FMSA9 within a server-scheduled script if it's registered?

This is probably a beginner question. I am running filemaker 8.5 on my network. As an administrator, if I am the first to log in I become the host. When others log in remotely, that is when I have a problem. Different users have different access privileges. How can I make sure they log in remotely and have the proper limits to their privileges? Right now, if they log in remotely, they have the access privileges of the initial host. I do not want them having full access. Is there some type of work around, or am i missing something obvious? Please help. this is the last thing I need to get my database up and running.

HI, I have been tasked with finding a list of the EVENT IDs for FileMaker Server 5.5. I easily found the Error Code Value list with descriptions in the back of the FM Pro user manual. (Appendix B for anyone that is looking). However, I have had no luck with finding a similar code list for Server. Specifically, I need to find something along the lines of: Event -- Description -- Variable 2 -- Shut Down -- 4 -- File Closed -- 5 -- Asked to Quit -- 9 -- User Opening a Connection -- User Name, IP 15 -- User Closing a Connection -- User Name, IP 28 -- User Opening File -- User Name, File Name 29 -- User Closing File …

Hi people @ fmforums I know this topic may be out of place, but it is related to a WAN IP problem I think, so ... I'm running FMP 8.5 on OSX 10.3.9 and I want to share a database using IWP. What should guests type in the address field of their browsers? It is clearly not the local IP-address that FileMaker suggests in the IWP setup dialog! And do I need to configure my AirPort Extreme in a certain way to let outside guests see the IWP startpage ?!? Thanks in advance. Kind regards, pinocchio

How is this done? I have tried setting IWP both before and after the database is uploaded. Thanking anyone for advice.

Hello, I have a call log db solution that allows our customers to log problems by email. My question is to do with Server 9 & SQL integration - so I hope i'm in the correct area We use two SQL tables for 'mail_in' and 'mail_out'. I have added the SQL 'mail_in' table to my FM Schema & created a relationship to 'match' the incoming domain address to the correct customer in my FM Customers table... My problem is this - I'm wanting the server to execute the send/receive script by schedule & i'm having a problem with my only supplemental field. The supplemental field I have in my shadow table uses the above relation to 'lookup/calculate' the desired…

I have a novice question I could not answer from searching. I want to share a filemaker 6 data base between two computers which are not networked. Both are Mac's. The purpose of sharing the data base is that both users will make changes to the data base. I was thinking of having the data file reside on a server that both computers could access via the net, like a .mac account. The users don't want to have to copy the file from the server to their own computers each time they want to make a change to the data base. Someone told me that we need a newer version of file maker to do this. Is that correct? which version? Thanks.

Our server is on a standard G5 Dual 2 GHz Power PC running Mac OS X 10.3.5 We want to upgrade our Mac Clients to Tiger so we can upgrade our Adobe Creative Suite. In the admin console for FMSA 9.0 I click on the Edit Deployment link and activate IWP. When I get to the Configure Web Server, there is an empty pop up menu and a check box that says "skip this step and select web server later". IIS has been activated on the PC, but it was activated after the FMSA initial installation. Do I need to re-activate IIS, re-install FMSA or just restart the Component Services and/or the PC? Also , what should i see in that popup menu? Am I right that this is what is preventing IWP to work??
