Hello all, So I'm sure this has been answered elsewhere but I can't find it with my limited vocabulary. I have created a layout with sub-summary part that produces multiple different sub-summaries with respect to a bunch of summary fields when sorted by a single field (e.g. total/percent when sorted by location for 10 locations). I want to be able to view all location sub-summaries side by side without having to see the individual record data between them, since in some cases this means scrolling through hundreds of them. Is there a way to either hide the individual data that they sub-summaries are reporting on or else basically copy and paste them all into the hea…

I have a layout that I would like to print and have all the 'fill colors' (for fields, backgrounds, etc...) changed to white, and the graphics in the header removed. Does this require making a copy of the layout and removing the colors/graphics then printing from that new layout or is there some other way?

Hi all, I have a fairly simple database where I need to change the colour of a layout item based whether or not the expiry date is less than today's date. Basically the layout is designed like a simple card and I just want to turn the card red if the it's expired and needs renewing. So my question is, is it possible to change the colour of layout items (a simple rectangular box in this case) based on this calculation. I have no problem with setting up the script for this, I'm just not sure whether I can change the colour of a layout item based on it. Many thanks for any help Cheers Kevin

Hi all, This has got to be a simple issue. I'm creating some new layouts for an existing database. It's hosted on FM server. Each time I open the database, and go to my "TEMP" layouts that I'm working on, I end up going to the View menu to un-check Page Margins, then View | Show | and un-check Buttons and Field Boundaries. Finally, in the Inspector, under position, I click the inch indicator twice to change it to px. Then, with all that done, I feel like I'm ready to work. But, if I close the database, and re-open it, I have to do all of that all over again. How can I make it keep those options? Thanks in advance.

For whatever reason, the past two layouts that I have created do not how the actual checkboxes for a field when I enter a value set and choose "checkboxes." It has never done this in the past, and has always shown the checkboxes even when empty. does anyone know why this suddenly changed? is this a glitch? also, when i add any lines into the layout, they also do not appear....

Dear All, I am working on a layout and I want to disable the right menu bar, which is visible after clicking the right button of the mouse. Being a newbie, I encounter these dumb problems but I know someone always has the simple answer. I am figuring something is locked or a field is stopping me from adjusting the layout. I copied info into a new layout and needed to format it so I can print the data on an 8.5 x11 sheet of paper. i have a header area, a body area and a total area. My problem is I cannot adjust the body area. I want to reduce the space it takes up. Ultimately I want it to slide up and down based on the number of fields I have filled in within what will be a portal I am figuring. I have included the layout for reference. Any help appreciated. This has to be something simple, but I'm a newbie. : / When I'm editing my layout everything looks as it should, but when I 'Exit Layout' and enter 'Browse' mode, Everything in my layout changes sizes. When I zoom to 300 everything is proportional the way it should be, but when zooming out to 100, some items shrink and some get larger. I can't fix it, because when I edit the Layout everything is okay. Weird. Everything seemed fine until I was curious how my Layout would look printed. This should be easy but I can't find how to handle it: On any layout, If you click anywhere outside of the fields (any empty space) FM triggers a validation. It could be something like ''please enter customer number'' or whatever. I find it very frustrating as I would like to see nothing happen if you are not actually clicking into a field or trying to exit a record. My fields already carry the validations I need. Is there a way to turn this behavior off? I'm on FM 11 Advanced

Hi there out there, I just want to rearrange an existing starter solution database layout. • When I go to layout mode, I shift around elements but when I go to browse mode what I have adjusted is messed all up? • I am assuming there is some default over ride somewhere that is causing this but I cannot figure where. • Items that I have moved and set up to align left are now moving to the middle. • Field widths that I have adjusted are now all different. I'm using merge fields to display a series of data in one line. Ideally, I would like to separate each field with a comma. However, when there is no data in a given record, I don't want a bunch of ",,,,,,,". Even using spaces can look a bit odd, if there are five spaces before the first item in one record. I have a layout that (in Browse Mode) has dropdown lists that display data from another table. I would like the new record created when filling out the layout to log the date/time the value was selected and display that on the layout, adjacent to the selection that was made. This is a form that, on paper would have several people sign and date it. The dropdown would be from a table of personnel. I would like there to be a field on the layout next to each persons name that autofills with the timestamp when they select their name. There will be several occurrences of this, and will not be at the same time, so an overall time stamp for the layout/record won't work. It …

I used the layout wizard to create an envelope layout. It looks alright in preview mode but when I print I get two pages (I'm using paper cut to the size of the envelope to save money while testing) for each record . On the first page I can see the right half of the address block against the left side of the page. The second page is blank. Any suggestions?

I've created a bucket on my main database layout to hold documents, in this bucket I put .pdf files between 1 and 10 pages long. Without then re-exporting the pdf's to my desktop and viewing them there, how can i display/view then within filemaker? Thanks, Matt

Our main database used 8-inch layouts. It is based on a Filemaker template from 2005. It's ready for a makeover. I see that the Filemaker 11 templates have a 12-inch width. That extra screen real estate would be nice. Just wondering what size some of you are making your databases.

Hello Everyone; I am on my third attempt at a user interface design which i think would work better for my current project. However, i am unsure if i should use a portal to show the sub category or should i just show / hide repeating fields . I have attached my sample file (proof of concept) to see if i am on the right track and how i should go about doing this. The top of the file when selected will show / hide the subcat( cakes, pullaparts, suites) options below and then the tab object will be selected based on a script. Hi, I have 2 related questions. I have a portal in my invoice. It is followed by a closing paragraph which slides up to where the portal ends. I am producing a pdf to mail to the user. The portal may grow to 25 lines which would take it across the page break. Q1. How do I get the break in the portal to respect the page margins? It seems to print the first line on the second page half cut off by the top of the page. Q2. If the portal is only a few lines is there any way to eliminate the blank page 2 of the pdf?

More than once I've been looking for a way to make a single navigation header for use on all layouts. Working daily with PHP and HTML, I'm used to making a 'header.php' for example, having all the navigation buttons in a single file (either static or dynamic data), including a link to the file on each page. Is there any way to force the sort order of what appears in a drop down list when using values from a field? eg: Low-Medium-High, not High-Low-Medium (a simple example, others are more complex). Because I need control over list content to be restricted to one admin account, I am creating the lists from restricted access layout fields, rather than editable custom values. I don't want a second item in the list, but I also don't want items in alphabetical order. I want them in the sort order of the records/fields the list is compiled from. I have 2 related databases. Contacts and Jobs. A relationship is set up on urn fields, with create/delete records via relationship enabled on the Jobs side. Contacts contains details of clients, contractors and suppliers and will remain ‘on site’. Jobs, whilst also on-site, will be copied onto laptops and used off-site. Some of the contact details needs to be held in the Jobs database and I’ve set this up to work using lookups. The lookup fields successfully update via a relookup script but, when new records have been created in Contacts, relookup does not create new records in the Jobs database. Should they? Is there a number of fields that when placed on a layout that will degrade the performance when viewing that layout. I have a layout with 240 fields on it. It draws from 4 tables. When the script I use switches to this layout, the hourglass or the spinner in win7 keeps spinning for 10 to 15 seconds and it happens when I scroll down from the top part of the report. After the report/layout has been populated, all appears fine. Also when I switch to preview mode, it spends some time calculating. I have attached a pdf of the report. Untitled.pdf

I've put a database together with a few fields using ITC Zapf Dingbats, forgetting that that version comes with Adobe's CS suite and I should have used the Zapf Dingbats.ttf font supplied with the OS. (The client only has system fonts). I'm using triangular arrows plus a freehand-style tick and cross. All are put in either by auto-enter or by script. Switching to the .ttf version, loses the characters in the fields. My ideal solution would be to discover why FM won't accept the .ttf font (it works fine in other apps tried, eg: TextEdit, iWorks). I've spotted others with the same problem on the web, but not spotted a resolution. Any thoughts? If I can't fix it,…

File 1 is how I'd like it to look as I've set it up in layout mode. However File 2 is how it looks in browse mode. I've played with the page size dimensions and that worked to an extent however I just want this layout to look like this, I have multiple other layouts that need to stay the same regular letter page size. I have a startup script where I want to set the company logo which is in a container field and which I'm storing (NOT AS A REFERENCE) to a global $$ merge variable. I then want to use that global merge variable on various other layouts in the DB. First, can you set a picture file to a global merge variable? I'm not getting any image to appear on my form. I have returned to Filemaker after some time and have forgotten how to insure that a field retains the font formatting when you paste from a copied source outside of Filemaker. Much faster and sometimes more accurate to paste, rather than retype, but every time I do this the field shows the font style from the source. Thanks in advance.

I need to be able to create 4 records with a single script, and go to the first of the set made. Filemaker flashes up a message asking which record I want to go to, giving the total number of records in the found set, eg: 25. In that circumstance, I'd want to go to 22, but I don't want the end-user having to work that out every time. The message overrides a script step stating that I want to go to '22' (using a calculation based on the contents of a unique no. field). How do I stop that message appearing? (I've tried ErrorCapture but can't find a relevant error number).

HI I am a novice and need some help on a few quite simple questions. I have racked my brain but unsuccessful as yet with a perfect solution. I am trying to emulate a similar database to the MYOB accounting (mow Mamut software). My "List" layout has a header at the top with buttons reading "Customer", "Supplier", "Employee"' and "All". I hope I have the right place - I consider it to be layout issue. My mind has gone blank - I normally figure these thing out my self given tiime. I run a filemaker database, tables include Students, Subjects and Results. (obviously tables contain relevant fields). All related and it works. Heaps of scripting and display options etc. Management wants me to use a simple spreadsheet with check boxes so they can view results etc. (Hey, that is the extent of their computer literacy) Table view in filemaker does not help me that I can see. Sorry if this isn't quite the right forum for it, but is there any way to specify a custom zoom value? 300% is just a little too big, and 200% is a little too small, so 250 or 275 would be great, but there doesn't seem to be an obvious way of doing this.

I'm breaking my brains here, I must be over thinking this... I have a Repeating field (3) in which I enter the R, G and B value of an RGB color for use with Filemaker code: RGB ( red ; green ; blue ) The color it generates I want to be able to use for, for example, field backgrounds. Is this possible at all? It must be... Conditional formatting only allows the designer to pick the color, not the end user of the database.

I made a nice IE9 dynamic tab header for view on all layouts, works flawless. Only thing... it jumps to the right a couple of pixels when going from a form-view layout to a list-view layout. This sucks big time, extremely annoying. Anyway, how can I turn off the couple of pixels on the left in list-view? (its the space Filemaker uses to let you see in which record you are). Check the picture, this gotta be doable...

Greets: The title says it all--I've tried using the Inspector and going to Data > Data Formatting > Format > 12.25.2003 as well as setting up the same formatting style in Custom in the same drop-down menu. I'm trying to move data from several portal rows of 4 fields into a printable invoice layout. Using the portal in the invoice layout doesn't work, because Print Sliding is too limited. So I thought why not collect the data in one large field using tabs. But Is it possible to place a tab command in a calculation? Hi All, I want to create an input layout as I am fed up of getting blank records in the database but am somewhat stumped how to do this. The database is a standard invoice system with with four tables linked, Invoice, Clients, Products and Line_Items. While it would be easy enough to put a Commit button on the invoice and if the record is not committed, delete the record and reset the Invoice number sequence but what about the line_items which will still persist and resetting the line_items record numbers. Any pointers or reading material you could direct me to would be appreciated.

I am working on one table that has 100 records. The data consists of the types of threats we have at our company, the priority of the threats, and full summaries/paragraphs of what actions we need to take, whats our status, and our recommendations. So each record has data that is about a paragraph or so long and when I preview it on browse mode displaying it as one record it only shows the first sentence of the paragraph, NOT the entire paragraph. This goes the same when I use find mode and to preview it. My boss needs to see it all without having to click on it to view the entire paragraph. FM experts, Working on developing a layout that will display like a screen saver that will cover other layouts with sensitive information. The pause/resume script step appears to be the best first step, but having trouble stopping the script from another window. I'm creating a db to replace an Access db. Features such as drop down lists are to match as near as possible. The Access db has a drop down with 4 items in it. I can join 3 of them using a calculation feld, leaving the other one free to 'drop' into the field. But one of the 3 items is in a related db. How do I get around not being able to list unindexed data?

Hi all I'm sorry if this is really obvious or the wrong place to post this, but I have been having a real frustration with FM Pro databases recently. I am editing my website databases using ODBC. As I tend to edit fields en masse, I use the "view as table" browse mode. In a lot of my columns, the fields I have contain more data than the column width will show. So I've tried adjusting the column width, but it won't let me. I've used the drag to resize function, and the right click and set column width one, but in both cases my column width remains the same. Part of what I would like to do with this solution is to track the status of parts on a per project basis. Going around in circles on this any help in getting me going in the right direction is greatly appreciated! I have table 1 of products with serial numbers, table 2 product specifications and measurements table 3 images of product parts All of the tables are related w/ serial number. My difficulty is that I can not figure out how to get a report that has all the pictures from table 3 - they show up fine in a portal but I can't get everything to print together.

Is it possible to display only items needed, triggered by particular checkboxes, while keeping remaining items tight without blank spaces. In Filemaker Pro 11 I can certainly use conditional formatting to make certain items invisible, but instead, when these items aren't needed, I want the remaining required items moved up. In actual practice, the full form spans several pages and unneeded sections could take up part of a page or span more than one page. The end result would be reduction in material to read when reviewing the submission and enabling better focus on the items requiring attention. I have a simple layout that, amongst other things, displays a single editable field with a drop down list. As the user enters the layout the list automatically displays. The problem is that after they choose something from the list and the field fills, the list drops down again, presumably because the cursor has nowhere to go. No other field can be entered and I don't want tab-able buttons, nor hidden fields. Can anyone suggest how I can resolve this frustration? (v11)

I am new to Filemaker so apologies if this query is a bit basic. I have a form based on a tblExpenses which contains transactional data. Within that table there is (for example) a field called CategoryID. This relates to a CatID field in a seperate tblCategories. What I want is a way on the original form that when the user tabs in, they can start typing the category description but be restricted to that values from tblCategories.The resultant value though needs to be stored as the ID (not the description) in the tblExpenses I've tried using drop downs and pop ups but this doesn't seem to meet the requirement. Just curious. I know merge field can and are used on reports, but what about using them in a layout that will be in browse mode? Is this wise? The advantages: User can not change the fields. Disadvantages ? Would you recommend the use of merge fields in a layout that will be used in Browse mode only?

Am I doing something wrong or will sliding objects only resize the body of a layout?

I'm trying to print labels for EVERY job we have in our database (roughly 1000 jobs) on Avery 5162 labels. I'd estimate it'll take roughly 70-80 pages. I went through the label creator, selected my label size, etc and it created ONE label for me. I want it to show the 14 label fields and when I show "view all records" it will just print everything on multiple sheets. I feel like its a really simple concept, but it seems to be really complicated. Am I crazy? I attached screenshots about where I'm at.

I've had a search for various Dymo printing problem topics and tried many different things but I cannot get Filemaker to successfully print an 90010 address label on a Dymo 400 printer. I have set up a new layout , ditched the header and footer , made the body the height of the label and zeroed the margins (pretty much everything that other people have suggested , and have got working). Every time i run the script , it tells me that the combined size of the header and footer is longer than can fit on the page . please try reducing the header and footer. has anyone got a template they can attach as i'm getting nowhere. Hi all, This is what I'm triying to do. I will kick myself when there is a simple solution, I'm searching for days now. What am I overlooking? On my layout there is a TabControl object. One panel is called "Medewerkers" (dutch for Employees) and another panel is called "Details" On the panel "Medewerkers" is a portal with all the Employees of an organisation. (relationship one to many). I'm looking for a way that when clicking on a name in the portal the layout switches to the Details panel and shows the right related (Employees)record. Off and on over many months, I've looked for a way to turn off the dotted field outlines that display when the user clicks in any blank area of the layout. I've attached a sample file that clearly demonstrates the effect. I would believe that it just isn't possible, if it weren't for the fact that a few fields on a few of my layouts don't display the outline. Hi All, I have tried both a self-join relationship and conditional formatting to make a touchscreen keypad disappear/reappear. I want the keypad to appear when someone enters any field, and disappear when they exit the field. I'm using Get(ActiveFieldName) as the condition (or to populate the join key for the relationship) Data viewer shows that Get(ActiveFieldName) is either empty or contains a value as expected. However, the condition is not triggered and the the key field is not populated. I have a report/layout, that has one repeating field horizontally at the top, listing different cars like Mercedes, Mazda, BMW etc. Vertically on the left I have a list of the attributes like Electric Windows Aircondition Aluminium Wheels etc If a Car has the attribute the report shows "yes" in the relevant box. (The report has a header, footer and a subsummary but I think thats irrelevant to this question) Problem: My report has room for six cars across and it prints in Portrait. I have a table of courses for each student and their grades. I'm trying to get averages for the different courses. So I created a summary filed for the number of grades per course (sort by course) and summary for total of all grades for course. Then I have a summary part that has the course name (summary break on course name) and I created a calculation field for the total of grades over the number of grades that their are rounded to two decimal places. The summary fields look good (for example, one course may have 10 students taking it, total of grades may be 890. Those are the summary fields. Hi, I read a lot of "Drag n' Drop" post all over the web, but nothing conclusive or it was wrong. Some say that FM11 does not have Container Drag & Drop capabilities from a source outside the application. Well, in windows it is working very good. on my old macbook it was also working very good. Hi, I think this is maybe a simple issue, but I'm not able to figure it out at this moment. This is what I want to accomplish: In my settings table there is is field called SelectBy. The values are Row and Item. This is a global field. This value is set for the entire solution. The user can make reservations for the customers. User goes to the reservations layout and has to input in a field for wich Row or Item the reservation is made. On this field the data will be entered using a valuelist. Hi all: I need to customize an existing solution (FM Starting Point) and part of the job is localize it, that is translate to Spanish all the layout elements; this job represent hours, I have like 250 layouts all with lots of labels, buttons, etc. that are now in English. So the big question is: is there any way to change the display name of an element in multiple layouts at the same time. like a batch processing? I have a FileMaker file with several layouts. The one-page layout works as expected, but the two-page layout prints only the first page. Is there a setting that I need to change? There is a large field (edit box) which spans both pages, plus smaller fields on both pages. I checked all the settings related to the fields on the second page and they seem right to me -- "hide while printing" is off, etc. The layout itself clearly spans two pages, the trim sizes being clearly marked. Conditional formatting is not set for any object and the text is long enough to have several paragraphs on the second page. What can I do?

Ok, so I've watched tutorials on sub-summaries but still can't seem to get how they work. When I create a layout with sub-summaries, it either lists every record or just one. I'm assuming since I'm using FM 11 Adv, I am automatically using live sub-summaries so they work in browse mode. Attached is my simplified project. I want to list the violations for the inspection they are associated with. Inspections and violations is a many-to-many relationship. Inspections.fp7.zip

Is there any way to remove the 'New Record' and 'Delete Record' buttons from the GUI header of FileMaker windows? I often accidently hit one of the buttons when I try to reposition a window.

This seems to me like an incredibly stupid question. I have Filemaker 11 on my PC. Everywhere I look there is talk of how well Filemaker handles being used on a PC or on a Mac. I have now bought an IMac. Can I take my Filemaker 11 program and simply load it onto the Mac. I can see how Filemaker GO works. I suspect that it is only the solutions that work on both machines. However, nowhere does it say this is not what can happen. Is this because it is so obvious, and everyone knows it can happen.

I have a Photo Catalog Database that stores family photos from a designated folder on a Hard Drive. These photos are displayed by and import routine that adds the file reference to a container field. The problem I have is if I move my database file to some other drive or folder, or even rename the Drive Volume, I loose the file reference. Somewhat understandable... But is there anyway I can "re-attach" the references without re-importing all the images? I have over 9000 images. That would not be fun. Hi, I have opened my FP7 file, which I created on a windows machine, on a Mac. The problem is that about third of the graphix looks not as on the Win machine. For example, many of the PNG's I used look brighter and text boxes are higher... A sample pic is attached... I am building an Aged Receivables Report in Filemaker. While my report uses our Invoices table, I've excluded the body part, and am using a "Sub-summary when sort by" part. This part contains a number of summary fields that sum the balances of this Invoices table to show some total balances for each customer. It is working as expected. When I edit a layout, I can drag the word "body" down to add more space, and can add any fields I need and move them to their position. But, I can't get any more space to the right of the screen. If I drag fields past the dotted line they disappear. I can't seem to drag the line to the right to make the layout bigger. I know it has to be possible. What do I do?

I manage a small office network of 5 computers running FMP9.0 which I recently updated to 9.03 along with the SSL update to match. Two machines that have undergone the update no longer display embedded images in the database layouts properly. While the other three have no problems at all. The images are not in container fields (in retrospect that would have been much smarter) but placed right on the layout board. There is extensive use of auto resize to generate seamless borders and title bars. I want to be able to display text for a certain field but not let the user modify the text. I also want the text to be scrollable, since it will often overflow its object on the layout. I can't seem to have it both ways. If I unselect browse mode in the inspector under field entry, I can't scroll. If I select browse mode, the text of course becomes modifiable. So here's my situation: I created a textbox and I set up the formatting with a font, size, color, etc. Lets say Arial, 10pt, Black. Now my user comes along and wants to make the data in the textbox stand out. So the user enters data into the text box, highlights the text he wants and changes it to 18pt, red, bold. This might seem like a silly question, but I'm pretty new to filemaker. In the database that I am creating, users can only add records through the 'Add Record' layouts that I made. I was concerned with people canceling part-way through and leaving garbage in the database, so the fields in the 'Add Record' layout are globals that are set to the actual table when they click on the 'Add' button. Is this the best way to do this? If so, should I have a set of globals for each table where users need to add records (gName, gPart_Number), or a set of globals that are used for all 'Add' layouts in all tables (gAdd_Temp1, gAdd_Temp2)? Hi all I am trying to work out how to add in a page to extend the layout of a report. Using the part setup up to create a sub summary, I find that a, I do not know what I am doing an b, when I do this, the text /fields above my new subsummary break whilst it appears in layout mode, doews not appear on the screen when I exit layout mode. I have a solution I will be selling as a stand alone application. Part of it involves a section of the app to display images - somewhat like banner ads, and have them linked to the website associated with it. I know I can accomplish this via the web viewer and doing some scripting to get a random image served each time... however, I cannot figure out how to get the webviewer box to go away and just show the image - if there is a way to kill the boundary of the viewer, I think that will work for me. If you have any other suggestions for approach what would be essentially a clickable banner ad, that pulls the ads from a web location, Im open to ideas.

I have an avery label layout with specific margins. The margins are set up "facing each other," so that there is always a wider inner margin on the pages when they're printed. When I go into preview mode, FileMaker correctly alternates the margins so that the larger margin would always be on the inside of the page. However, when I try printing this to a PDF, the labels shift, well, oddly.
