    Hello all, So I'm sure this has been answered elsewhere but I can't find it with my limited vocabulary. I have created a layout with sub-summary part that produces multiple different sub-summaries with respect to a bunch of summary fields when sorted by a single field (e.g. total/percent when sorted by location for 10 locations). I want to be able to view all location sub-summaries side by side without having to see the individual record data between them, since in some cases this means scrolling through hundreds of them. Is there a way to either hide the individual data that they sub-summaries are reporting on or else basically copy and paste them all into the hea…

  2. I have a layout that I would like to print and have all the 'fill colors' (for fields, backgrounds, etc...) changed to white, and the graphics in the header removed. Does this require making a copy of the layout and removing the colors/graphics then printing from that new layout or is there some other way?

  3. Hi all, I have a fairly simple database where I need to change the colour of a layout item based whether or not the expiry date is less than today's date. Basically the layout is designed like a simple card and I just want to turn the card red if the it's expired and needs renewing. So my question is, is it possible to change the colour of layout items (a simple rectangular box in this case) based on this calculation. I have no problem with setting up the script for this, I'm just not sure whether I can change the colour of a layout item based on it. Many thanks for any help Cheers Kevin

    Hi all, This has got to be a simple issue. I'm creating some new layouts for an existing database. It's hosted on FM server. Each time I open the database, and go to my "TEMP" layouts that I'm working on, I end up going to the View menu to un-check Page Margins, then View | Show | and un-check Buttons and Field Boundaries. Finally, in the Inspector, under position, I click the inch indicator twice to change it to px. Then, with all that done, I feel like I'm ready to work. But, if I close the database, and re-open it, I have to do all of that all over again. How can I make it keep those options? Thanks in advance.

    For whatever reason, the past two layouts that I have created do not how the actual checkboxes for a field when I enter a value set and choose "checkboxes." It has never done this in the past, and has always shown the checkboxes even when empty. does anyone know why this suddenly changed? is this a glitch? also, when i add any lines into the layout, they also do not appear....

    Being a newbie, I encounter these dumb problems but I know someone always has the simple answer. I am figuring something is locked or a field is stopping me from adjusting the layout. I copied info into a new layout and needed to format it so I can print the data on an 8.5 x11 sheet of paper. i have a header area, a body area and a total area. My problem is I cannot adjust the body area. I want to reduce the space it takes up. Ultimately I want it to slide up and down based on the number of fields I have filled in within what will be a portal I am figuring. I have included the layout for reference. Any help appreciated. This has to be something simple, but I'm a newbie. : / When I'm editing my layout everything looks as it should, but when I 'Exit Layout' and enter 'Browse' mode, Everything in my layout changes sizes. When I zoom to 300 everything is proportional the way it should be, but when zooming out to 100, some items shrink and some get larger. I can't fix it, because when I edit the Layout everything is okay. Weird. Everything seemed fine until I was curious how my Layout would look printed.   10. This should be easy but I can't find how to handle it: On any layout, If you click anywhere outside of the fields (any empty space) FM triggers a validation. It could be something like ''please enter customer number'' or whatever. I find it very frustrating as I would like to see nothing happen if you are not actually clicking into a field or trying to exit a record. My fields already carry the validations I need. Is there a way to turn this behavior off? I'm on FM 11 Advanced

Hi there out there, I just want to rearrange an existing starter solution database layout. • When I go to layout mode, I shift around elements but when I go to browse mode what I have adjusted is messed all up? • I am assuming there is some default over ride somewhere that is causing this but I cannot figure where. • Items that I have moved and set up to align left are now moving to the middle. • Field widths that I have adjusted are now all different.     I'm using merge fields to display a series of data in one line. Ideally, I would like to separate each field with a comma. However, when there is no data in a given record, I don't want a bunch of ",,,,,,,". Even using spaces can look a bit odd, if there are five spaces before the first item in one record.   13. I have a layout that (in Browse Mode) has dropdown lists that display data from another table. I would like the new record created when filling out the layout to log the date/time the value was selected and display that on the layout, adjacent to the selection that was made. This is a form that, on paper would have several people sign and date it. The dropdown would be from a table of personnel. I would like there to be a field on the layout next to each persons name that autofills with the timestamp when they select their name.     I used the layout wizard to create an envelope layout. It looks alright in preview mode but when I print I get two pages (I'm using paper cut to the size of the envelope to save money while testing) for each record . On the first page I can see the right half of the address block against the left side of the page. The second page is blank. Any suggestions?

However, i am unsure if i should use a portal to show the sub category or should i just show / hide repeating fields .     Hi, I have 2 related questions. I have a portal in my invoice. It is followed by a closing paragraph which slides up to where the portal ends. I am producing a pdf to mail to the user. The portal may grow to 25 lines which would take it across the page break. Q1. How do I get the break in the portal to respect the page margins? Working daily with PHP and HTML, I'm used to making a 'header.php' for example, having all the navigation buttons in a single file (either static or dynamic data), including a link to the file on each page. No matter where you are, or when buttons change, you are dealing with or loading a single file.     Is there any way to force the sort order of what appears in a drop down list when using values from a field? eg: Low-Medium-High, not High-Low-Medium (a simple example, others are more complex).     I have 2 related databases. Contacts and Jobs. A relationship is set up on urn fields, with create/delete records via relationship enabled on the Jobs side. Contacts contains details of clients, contractors and suppliers and will remain ‘on site’. Jobs, whilst also on-site, will be copied onto laptops and used off-site.     Is there a number of fields that when placed on a layout that will degrade the performance when viewing that layout. I have a layout with 240 fields on it. It draws from 4 tables. When the script I use switches to this layout, the hourglass or the spinner in win7 keeps spinning for 10 to 15 seconds and it happens when I scroll down from the top part of the report. After the report/layout has been populated, all appears fine. Also when I switch to preview mode, it spends some time calculating. I have attached a pdf of the report. Untitled.pdf

    I've put a database together with a few fields using ITC Zapf Dingbats, forgetting that that version comes with Adobe's CS suite and I should have used the Zapf Dingbats.ttf font supplied with the OS. (The client only has system fonts). I'm using triangular arrows plus a freehand-style tick and cross. All are put in either by auto-enter or by script. Switching to the .ttf version, loses the characters in the fields. My ideal solution would be to discover why FM won't accept the .ttf font (it works fine in other apps tried, eg: TextEdit, iWorks).   31. I have returned to Filemaker after some time and have forgotten how to insure that a field retains the font formatting when you paste from a copied source outside of Filemaker. Much faster and sometimes more accurate to paste, rather than retype, but every time I do this the field shows the font style from the source. Thanks in advance.

    I need to be able to create 4 records with a single script, and go to the first of the set made. Filemaker flashes up a message asking which record I want to go to, giving the total number of records in the found set, eg: 25. In that circumstance, I'd want to go to 22, but I don't want the end-user having to work that out every time. The message overrides a script step stating that I want to go to '22' (using a calculation based on the contents of a unique no. field). How do I stop that message appearing? (I've tried ErrorCapture but can't find a relevant error number).

I run a filemaker database, tables include Students, Subjects and Results. (obviously tables contain relevant fields). All related and it works. Greets: The title says it all--I've tried using the Inspector and going to Data > Data Formatting > Format > 12.25.2003 as well as setting up the same formatting style in Custom in the same drop-down menu. The formatting choice works fine in Date fields, but apparently not in timestamp fields...or am I missing something?     Hi All, I want to create an input layout as I am fed up of getting blank records in the database but am somewhat stumped how to do this. The database is a standard invoice system with with four tables linked, Invoice, Clients, Products and Line_Items. While it would be easy enough to put a Commit button on the invoice and if the record is not committed, delete the record and reset the Invoice number sequence but what about the line_items which will still persist and resetting the line_items record numbers.     I am working on one table that has 100 records. The data consists of the types of threats we have at our company, the priority of the threats, and full summaries/paragraphs of what actions we need to take, whats our status, and our recommendations. So each record has data that is about a paragraph or so long and when I preview it on browse mode displaying it as one record it only shows the first sentence of the paragraph, NOT the entire paragraph. I am editing my website databases using ODBC. As I tend to edit fields en masse, I use the "view as table" browse mode. In a lot of my columns, the fields I have contain more data than the column width will show. So I've tried adjusting the column width, but it won't let me. In Filemaker Pro 11 I can certainly use conditional formatting to make certain items invisible, but instead, when these items aren't needed, I want the remaining required items moved up.     I have a simple layout that, amongst other things, displays a single editable field with a drop down list. As the user enters the layout the list automatically displays. The problem is that after they choose something from the list and the field fills, the list drops down again, presumably because the cursor has nowhere to go.     I am new to Filemaker so apologies if this query is a bit basic. I have a form based on a tblExpenses which contains transactional data. Within that table there is (for example) a field called CategoryID. This relates to a CatID field in a seperate tblCategories. What I want is a way on the original form that when the user tabs in, they can start typing the category description but be restricted to that values from tblCategories.The resultant value though needs to be stored as the ID (not the description) in the tblExpenses I've tried using drop downs and pop ups but this doesn't seem to meet the requirement.   54. I'm trying to print labels for EVERY job we have in our database (roughly 1000 jobs) on Avery 5162 labels. I'd estimate it'll take roughly 70-80 pages. I went through the label creator, selected my label size, etc and it created ONE label for me. I want it to show the 14 label fields and when I show "view all records" it will just print everything on multiple sheets. I feel like its a really simple concept, but it seems to be really complicated. Am I crazy? I attached screenshots about where I'm at.

  56. I've had a search for various Dymo printing problem topics and tried many different things but I cannot get Filemaker to successfully print an 90010 address label on a Dymo 400 printer. I have set up a new layout , ditched the header and footer , made the body the height of the label and zeroed the margins (pretty much everything that other people have suggested , and have got working).   57. Hi all, This is what I'm triying to do. I will kick myself when there is a simple solution, I'm searching for days now. What am I overlooking? On my layout there is a TabControl object. One panel is called "Medewerkers" (dutch for Employees) and another panel is called "Details" On the panel "Medewerkers" is a portal with all the Employees of an organisation.     Off and on over many months, I've looked for a way to turn off the dotted field outlines that display when the user clicks in any blank area of the layout. I've attached a sample file that clearly demonstrates the effect. I would believe that it just isn't possible, if it weren't for the fact that a few fields on a few of my layouts don't display the outline. But I can't see any difference in the way those fields are defined. Thanks in advance for any advice. BorderTest.ZIP

    Hi All, I have tried both a self-join relationship and conditional formatting to make a touchscreen keypad disappear/reappear. I want the keypad to appear when someone enters any field, and disappear when they exit the field. So I created a summary filed for the number of grades per course (sort by course) and summary for total of all grades for course. Then I have a summary part that has the course name (summary break on course name) and I created a calculation field for the total of grades over the number of grades that their are rounded to two decimal places.     I have a FileMaker file with several layouts. The one-page layout works as expected, but the two-page layout prints only the first page. Is there a setting that I need to change? There is a large field (edit box) which spans both pages, plus smaller fields on both pages. I checked all the settings related to the fields on the second page and they seem right to me -- "hide while printing" is off, etc. The layout itself clearly spans two pages, the trim sizes being clearly marked. Conditional formatting is not set for any object and the text is long enough to have several paragraphs on the second page. What can I do?

    Ok, so I've watched tutorials on sub-summaries but still can't seem to get how they work. When I create a layout with sub-summaries, it either lists every record or just one. I'm assuming since I'm using FM 11 Adv, I am automatically using live sub-summaries so they work in browse mode. Attached is my simplified project.     This seems to me like an incredibly stupid question. I have Filemaker 11 on my PC. Everywhere I look there is talk of how well Filemaker handles being used on a PC or on a Mac. I have now bought an IMac. Can I take my Filemaker 11 program and simply load it onto the Mac. I can see how Filemaker GO works. I suspect that it is only the solutions that work on both machines. However, nowhere does it say this is not what can happen. Is this because it is so obvious, and everyone knows it can happen.

  73. I have a Photo Catalog Database that stores family photos from a designated folder on a Hard Drive. These photos are displayed by and import routine that adds the file reference to a container field. The problem I have is if I move my database file to some other drive or folder, or even rename the Drive Volume, I loose the file reference. Somewhat understandable... But is there anyway I can "re-attach" the references without re-importing all the images? I have over 9000 images. That would not be fun.     Hi, I have opened my FP7 file, which I created on a windows machine, on a Mac. The problem is that about third of the graphix looks not as on the Win machine. For example, many of the PNG's I used look brighter and text boxes are higher... A sample pic is attached... This functionality works great except when I am scrolled down the screen a little ways when the founds are preformed my scroll bar resets to the top.   88. I want to be able to display text for a certain field but not let the user modify the text. I also want the text to be scrollable, since it will often overflow its object on the layout. I can't seem to have it both ways. If I unselect browse mode in the inspector under field entry, I can't scroll. If I select browse mode, the text of course becomes modifiable.     This might seem like a silly question, but I'm pretty new to filemaker. In the database that I am creating, users can only add records through the 'Add Record' layouts that I made. I was concerned with people canceling part-way through and leaving garbage in the database, so the fields in the 'Add Record' layout are globals that are set to the actual table when they click on the 'Add' button. Is this the best way to do this? If so, should I have a set of globals for each table where users need to add records (gName, gPart_Number), or a set of globals that are used for all 'Add' layouts in all tables (gAdd_Temp1, gAdd_Temp2)?     I have a solution I will be selling as a stand alone application. Part of it involves a section of the app to display images - somewhat like banner ads, and have them linked to the website associated with it. I know I can accomplish this via the web viewer and doing some scripting to get a random image served each time... however, I cannot figure out how to get the webviewer box to go away and just show the image - if there is a way to kill the boundary of the viewer, I think that will work for me. If you have any other suggestions for approach what would be essentially a clickable banner ad, that pulls the ads from a web location, Im open to ideas.

  100. I have an avery label layout with specific margins. The margins are set up "facing each other," so that there is always a wider inner margin on the pages when they're printed. When I go into preview mode, FileMaker correctly alternates the margins so that the larger margin would always be on the inside of the page.
