Importing & Exporting

I've just run into an odd problem (FM 8.5). I've got a membership list that I generate in a script and then Save Records as Excel. In the resulting XL file, the last (i.e. right-most) field in the FM layout appears as the second column. If, instead, I Export Records to Excel and specify field order, the resulting XL file is just what I expect. Any ideas what might be causing the odd behaviour in Save to Excel?

I know that QB and FM can be integrated with at least two different 3rd party plug-ins I've found. The question is - do the plugins work as well with the online version as the desktop version? thanks Christopher

Has anyone used the 'Import XML data over http' feature at all? It could be one of the most powerful tools in the product if only they had developed it properly and finished the job! Sorry I'm having a bit of a whinge here as I cannot quite believe that no facility has been created for allowing proxy details to be entered. This is one of those slightly hidden or 'less-known-about' features of Filemaker which could now prove to be one of the post powerful. I have the need to export FileMaker data to an existing Excel format in an all Mac environment - FMP 11 (or 12 once it gets sorted out). The COULD be a template in Excel waiting for data or it COULD be a new Excel document created that has the required formatting... I am not locked in to any given process to get there. I have searched for this to no avail. Does anyone know of a way to import qfx files from online banking sites into FileMaker? The data type is OFXSGML Unfortunately, I have a long history of qfx files and can't go back and re-export them as csv. They also have transactions from more than one account in each file that other online banking apps don't seem to support. Thanks.

I'm trying to work out why my xml import has stopped importing records. This is a routine I have used periodically and has worked as expected. Now, when I view the import step I can see the xml file itself, the stylesheet and the import order but when I run it it doesn't import the the records (e.g. found set = 0). The files themselves are located on a FP server. I've also tested it running on my desktop, but get the same result (e.g. no records) Any advice would be most welcome. G'Day everyone. I am new to all this FMP12 stuff and I am the first to admit that I know 99% of absolutely nothing..... I am in the process of developing a client contact database for my new business. I need to create a section within the client record so I can import / export multiple files of different types (pdf's, xls, ppt etc) I have tried playing around with container fields and basic scripting. The most I have been able to achieve is importing a single file image icon for the file, but no file or even link. Can someone please help me with a (he is an idiot) explanation.... So I set up an ODBC data source on Windows 7, using the ODBC Data Source Administrator, Using the Microsoft Access Driver. Hello all - I'm having a difficult time setting up a new Win2k8 64bit server, that I will be running FMPSA v12. I have a number of different ODBC DSN's configured, and all of them function properly when run in the interactive mode: ie I connect to the hosted FM database, and invoke the script that performs the refresh (delete existing records, and reload from corporate datasources); but fail when run as a FMPS scheduled task. Defining an export to a text file (tab-separated, comma-separated, merge etc.) I can choose between Current layout ("xx") = default or select Current Table ("xx") in a drop-down. Why are the fields in layout mode in "random mixed" order? Viewing the layout of my current tables, it shows the fields in excatly the same order as they come in the table. Where and how do I change the field order to ensure that the field order is excactly as I want for every export operation (I make this daily)?

I'm running into a problem with scripted export of contents of a container field in FMP 12 where the store is externally hosted in the default external storage location. Export works properly with a right-click export in the field but errs [unknown error: 20403] when I try to script the same thing. It's not a paths issue because the script works perfectly when the storage is changed to internal. Any tricks or gotchas to this new external storage for containers?

Is there a way to rename an image file that is held in a container field - in either FM 11 or 12? I'm currently grappling with converting an image-heavy database from FM 11 to 12. I think I have a grip on the Container fields, but my case is made a little more complex, because my original Container images were inserted by means of copy-and-paste rather than the "Insert Picture" command. tbl_Session_Ops is my daily transaction table. I collect transactions over the course of the day here. tbl_Session_Ops_History is a related table (used Duplicate Table) into which I intend to deposit all today's transactions so that I can have history. I have _kp_clientID in tbl_Session_Ops relation"ed" to _kf_ClientID in tbl_Session_Ops_History. I don't want to dynamically copy each transaction during the day because I often have to return to a previous transaction to change something. I have fields that have auto enter calculations as part of their definition. In the examples I am thinking about I have a custom function that can correct accents in text field that have encoding errors. So if you enter "√ß" into a field for example it a "ç" is automatically substituted. However when i do an import the auto enter calculation which is configured to replace existing data does not work. I can obviously use calculation fields and scripts as a work around, but I would just like to know whether there is a way of resolving this without going to that extreme. Would anybody be able to give me some pointers here ?

This is an obvious bug. A very simple import between two tables. Then if you add a field into the target table, FileMaker MAPS from a random source field to it! REPEAT ... FileMaker decides to ADD a field to your map. Everyone? If you EVER script an import and expect your map to hold, you should take a moment to review this file. Hi all, I'm trying to pull data from Sage Line 50. I want to get the customer name, contact details and account number. They sem to be in the Sales_Ledger table in Sage but when I go to open them in Filemaker 11, it doesn't show any fields as being available. Anybody any ideas? If I use Excel for the import I can get some of the info out using the Sales_Ledger table but Filemaker shows it as having no fields.... confused!

Hi all - I just recently wrote a script that converts images stored in container fields to images stored in a directory with a reference stored in the container field. The script loops through the records exporting the images to a directory and then inserts the exported image via the Insert Picture script step. There are roughly 75,000 records/images to process. What seems to be happening is that the more images that are in the directory, the longer it takes the Insert Picture step to run. This seems odd since: 1. I have a script that automates the import of a tab delimited file. My database has two tables, one called "Shot Versions" (which is where I keep versions of shots that our visual effects vendors create) and another called "Notes" (where I keep all the notes I make on the Shot Versions). The script first imports the tab delimited data into the Shot Versions table and then, because I want to make a note on every one of those records, I import the Shot Version IDs from the found set into the Notes table. I have a database table which I import from an external source. The table has 127 fields, some can be blank, and some have only one line of text while 2 or 3 of the fields will have a few paragraphs. I need to export it as a merge file or comma separated to be used in InDesign. I have 10 different database files. They all have the same structure (tables, fields, etc), same scripts, same layouts. But each has a different set of data. When I update one of them (layouts, scripts, new fields, etc), I'd like to apply the updates to the other 9. What is the best way to do this? Right now I export all of the data by table and import this into a clone of the updated one. If export/import is the best way to do this, is there a faster way? Can I somehow import all of the fields from all of the tables at once from a filemaker file to another filemaker file?

There must be something simple I'm missing, but I'm importing data from a bunch of Excel spreadsheets whose column headers *do* match my Filemaker field names -- bt when I open up the 'Import Field Mapping' panel, the "matching names" option in the "Arrange by:" menu is greyed out. MacOSX Snow Leopard - FMA v9 I want to create a script that will create a Word document or RTFD that contains a list with the target vocabulary word and it's associated graphic image. After a *lot* of climbing of the learning curve, I got my Import function to work. (thank you 360Works for ScriptMaster selectFile() ). I figured I could write a similar procedure to 'archive'/export individual database records. So, I copied my original database (Members.fp7) and created (MembersArchive.fp7). In my Members::Export Script, I selected MembersArchive. When I opened MembersArchive there was all the data, but the Layouts, scripts etc have ALL been deleted. huh? Hi, Recently Canada Revenue has announced that as of the tax year 2012 it will no longer be accepting paper T4A forms from payers (employers) submitting more than 50 forms. They will expect the data as XML. The data I need to export has perhaps 20 fields . . . 10 in the main table and around 10 related fields. I am trying to export a found set in an Excel format (.xls). Sounds simple enough, but once I get through the dialogue boxes setting a destination file, I get an error that says, "This operation requires Rosetta, which is not available on this version of OSX." I am using Lion 10.7.3. Does 'export records' to excel really not work with Lion? It seems crazy. Has anyone had this problem, and does anyone know a workaround? Reinstalling the software did not fix the problem. Any thoughts are appreciated!

I've scoured the interweb globe for an answer to this but can't find anything that helps. We have a Synology NAS that I would like to save a simple txt file file too. Basically, this file needs to be placed in a specific folder so another program can import the data. Obviously I can manually move the file once it's created on the desktop but thought it would be nice to have everything done for the user. I don't know if it's my export path or the permissions on the drive or what. The folder on the drive I want to export too is mounted but I keep getting "helpful" errors saying it can't be done. Hi All, I have an XML doc that I need to import into FMP. The document lists multiple "Event" elements. Sometimes these Event elements are followed by a "Comment" element. I want to filter the XML on import so only those Events who are followed by a Comment are imported. I'm trying to use the "for-each" expression in conjunction with the "preceding-sibling" axis to select the correct nodes, but it fails to pull any values from the XML. In all my years of working with FileMaker, I have never found a use for 'print to file' checkbox when printing since it produces (IMO) junk. Neither have I read a single thread mentioning it. Does anyone have an example of when this might be used or why it is even there? Thank you! :^)

I usually work in OSX and usually just drop into Parallels/WIndows to compile a Windows version of my app. This has worked extremely well; until I got to the Windows portion of my Import script. I use 360Works Select File() function to get the path. The variable $$Path looks like this: "filewin:/"&$$Volume&$$SelectImportFile The resulting 'created' drive/path/file looks like this: I have tried all kinds of combinations of $$Volume (no $$volume) etc and even tried to hard code $$Path to be as specified above. I have about 15 tables that are accessed via script through an import script. Everything works well *UNLESS* there is no source table. Then the user needs to press 'Cancel' and go on to the next table import. Question: "How can I script something like "If the source table <> target table then cancel" I am stuck. I have a script that does this already, it works great for text-files... however when I tried my same script on .MOV files it crashes 5% of the time (it's always the same files that makes it crash). OK, I'm back again with another question. I've been working on a solution that has one .fp7 fileset but multiple tables. I've adapted an FM StartUp solution that comes with FM - Research Notes. My Table1 - has data about social programs, and their descriptions. Table2 (which I had to create from scratch) has contact info, name of persons, addresses, phone numbers, email add. I wrote an import script that works great... except it will not bring in the value list from the source table? There are two versions of the same application: 741 and 886. (Different content) I open 741 and change the 'editable value list'. I run the import script from 886 using 741 as a source and everything seems right. Hi, I have recently started working for a company. They use an Order Management System using FM 11. They have a Revenue Report which after displaying on screen, they use the File->Export option to export data from it. Problem is : when Export is clicked, it asks for the name of file and type (we export in .xlsx) then there is an option for Worksheet name and after clicking OK, then the system crashes. The people here have been using Recover command to recover and they start using the recovered file. This file works fine for a few days and then crashes again. I'm setting up an excel file for import to "update matching records in found set" records and selected the option to "add remaining data as new records." My match field is the sys_id. What I"m finding is filemaker won't add the remaining data as new records unless there's a value in the sys_id match field. Normally, that field is set to auto-enter a serial number in sequence. I would prefer not to create a sys_id value in the excel in case someone has created the same one from within filemaker. I have created a script in the matters file which uses applescript to open a word template file, rename it according to the name of the record I ran the script from and save it with the new name. This part of the script works fine. This is not another question about registering Filemaker server with LDAP, it's about using Filemaker to write to certain information to a LDAP directory. My company has a substantial contact database that it would like to share company wide. We are very attracted to using a LDAP directory to do this so that many people and different applications can make use of the information. I'd probably still want a complete Filemaker database, but I would want it to also send the contact oriented field values to a LDAP directory. Filemaker wouldn't necessarily have to read from LDAP. Hello, I am trying to duplicate a database onto a flash drive and transfer it to another computer that also has the program filemaker. I have tried copy and pasting the file onto the flash drive and it doesnt open correctly on the other computer. I tried file/save a copy as, onto the flash drive and there is an error halfway through. Does anyone have another suggestion?

When using any method to export text, either scripted from a field or a record set, or just right-clicking on a field, the carriage returns in the body of the field are not properly formatted. this is the case regardless of which character set i export to, windows ansi, utf-8 etc. i've had this problem before, but somehow it seems to have gotten worse, perhaps since i upgraded to version 9? i remember reading something about using xslt to fix the problem, but my knowledge of xsl is pretty non-existent

I have a database with a multi-level hierarchy of one-to-many related tables, kind of like russian dolls: Collections < Titles < Copies < Volumes Unfortunately, I'm in a situation where I need to allow a couple of people to create data in Excel and then import it to my FMP database. Hi I have a "Bookings" report that displays orders booked in the month & year that the user provides. This report is sub summarized by Purchaser ID, Client ID, Sales Rep Last Name. So, I have attached a very ugly proof of concept for Quickbooks 2012 Mac integration with FM 11. Ultimately, I would like to be using something like this to create invoices on my ipod touch and exporting those invoices straight to QB. No extra data entry! Yay! It uses no plugins. Let's say I imported an entire Excel spreadsheet into Filemaker, which originally had 5 vertical columns of data. Hey guys, I'm trying to import contacts/customers from an excel spreadsheet, and I want it to ONLY add new records and SKIP matching records. This seems simple enough, but it seems the import options allow everything BUT that.... So instead, I thought I would settle with updating matching records as long as I don't lose data. Hi Everyone, I have inserted many pdf files into a container field through the 'Insert File' command. The PDF icon and name of the file sit nicely there. But I can't for the life of me work out how to simply open the PDF file in it's own program by double clicking the file. I can manually export field contents, meaning I will create a duplicate of the file and then open it - but creating a duplicate every time I need to open the PDf sounds a bit silly. Hey guys and gals I have some strange boxes in my data that I have imported from various old sources. When I copy and past the box into a separate text field then create a calculation of Code(field), it says it is number 11. Another one says it is 12. I look up 11 in ASCII and it says it is a vertical tab and 12 is form feed. Can we even make these characters in FM? I assume not and that is why the square. Does square also mean invalid character instead of the normal invalid question mark? When I test, many other numbers gives squares too. Why does FM recognize some symbols but not others? I need to import a 2 different CSV files into my data base. One regularly and the other once in a while. In the one that is regular everything lines up properly when I run my import script but in the one that I run once in a while 3 fields will not line up. I always have to manual go in an align these together. Any idea why? What I have done for both CSV files is to create a master file in a particular folder from which I aligned all fields for the scripts. I then remove the file and allow for people to place their updated files into this folder. Hi All, Here is the problem. I am importing a csv file with a particular date within it. Before importing the file I break down the date into separate month, day, year fields. Everything seems to import correctly but when I take the Month imported field and use it to create a Month name field instead of the 12 appearing as December it shows as January. What's the best way to go about archiving records that still allows the user to view them when needed? I don't need the archived records available in the DB for features like performing finds or browsing to previous records, but there does need to be a way to view them at some point. I was thinking of just creating a copy of the DB and deleting all older records in the current version. Then the copy would be the archive and have all records, but the current version of the DB would only have the last few years worth of records. Is there a better way to limit the number of records in the current DB, while still maintaining access to the archive on occasion? The archive…

Hi I am new to filemaker. I have a database in Access used to keep a record of sales. I have two tables (actually more but if I solve this I ll be able to do it for others), one for sales (fields include, Id, Inv No, Date, Rep Name, Sale Amt) and one for reps (rep id and rep name). In access the data stored for the rep in the sales table is the id of the rep in the rep table. I exported the two tables to excel. When importing them, I cannot find a way to show the rep name when it comes to the sales form even though I build a relationship. Don t know if I was clear, Your help would be appreciated.

Hi all, First i must say i've been trying to do this during two weeks on FileMaker Pro 11. I've read all possible google result or forum topic. And yet I fail to figure: how to export all images ? I've tried tons of scripts and now i'm trying to with auto-it but apparently it is unable to ControlFocus("FileMaker Pro", "", 65280) which contains the image field. The table Sentences consists of a set of records that have ‘original’ sentences taken from books, the table Translations consists of a set of records that have translations of those original sentences into a set of different languages. I have a 1985-1989 Filemaker file on a diskette (720k) and am not sure if it was a Mac or MS operating system. It has a list of all the 8mm home family movies of the 1940's and 1950's. I no longer have a drive, nor the original computer or copy of FM. Hi there, I store all the files I am going to insert into my database in a specific folder. I created a script to insert a file into a container field, and I want the script to open the 'Insert File' window browser to that specific location each time. However, it seems that when I select the option 'Select Source File' in the options, I have to put the location of a file, not a folder. i.e. file:../../Lesson Plans/Materials/Topics/ Is there any way that I can have the script 'Insert file' to a specific location on my C:/ each time? I was wondering if there is any clever way to export Excel sheets with custom header titles. For instance, my solution uses z_albumTitle as a field, but to most people that doesn't mean anything, don't even get me started on something like (z_kf_licensingID_trackNumber). I would like it to export these records using something more intelligible, such as Album Title, Track Number - the real kicker is that we export to many different vendors and they all refer to these things differently. Everything that I've found concerning pipe-separated values seems to be a couple of years old, so I'm sticking my head up in case anything's changed (including in FMP 11, which I don't own). I have a data base where I import an Excel file, but lately I am experiencing a date issue. It has worked perfect for the last 5 months now all of a sudden the date has gone all screwy on me, some of the time. Some days it imports fine then all of a sudden it gets screwed up. Then it goes back to being fine again. Do i have some kind of virus or something? Any thoughts?? I import as day month year but sometimes it reads it as year month day. Any help appreciated.
