  1. OK, so I've figured out how to change text and field attributes, but how do I change the fill color of a simple rectangle object? The Conditional.. dialog says "dynamically change a layouts object's formatting..." Is a rectangle not considered a layout object? The Conditional.. menu item is grayed out when the rectangle is selected. All I want to do is if a field value is "Yellow" change the rectangle to yellow... I'm sure there's something I'm not seeing... Does anyone know if there's any good documentation on conditional formating yet? It's hard to find much on it!?! Thanks Dave

    Hi guys, I haven't quite figured this out yet, but I want to add one button to find mode that will return the user to the full record set. What is the best way to do this? I don't really want to create a completely separate layout if I can avoid that. I thought maybe some kind of conditional formatting? Cheers Chris

    We have several databases that are all interconnected. On them it seems that if we get to many layouts we have a problem where we can not manualy move to the layout using the drop down on the left side of the screen. On a couple we have over 200 layouts 1 has over 350! If I have to get to layout 100 I have to type the number in while in layout mode. I can often get to the first 50 or so layouts without any problem. It seems to be after 75 or so that when I select the layout I get sent to the last layout. Anyone have any idea if this is a bug or what. I can provide any info needed.

    Hi Guys, I've been poking around in templates and google and what not trying to figure this one out but I just can't seem to get it right. I have a text box for entering first name and last name with a light grey label so that users enter text in the right spot. However, once they enter text, you can still see the label through it! Is there a better way to do this? either a way to make the box background go white when there is text in it or a different way to label *inside* a text box that will automatically disappear when there is text and reappear when there is none (but preferably not thing that will be entered in to the DB when the record is saved if a sp…

    I have setup a SQL Database on my server and I have an ODBC connection to it. I can make forms and manipulate data with no problem. My issue is, when I try to make a value list from fields that are on the SQL Database, all the tables are grayed out. WTF? If I create a new table in my Filemaker Application, it shows up as ready to use for a value list. Is this one thing that Filemaker cannot do with SQL Server yet?

    Hi Folks! I've been using FileMaker for, well, decades. However, most of my creations have been simple flat databases.     Hey everybody. I have a list of employee records. Because of the way that our payroll system is set up, each employee has 9 records in this table. The table consists of the Employee ID, their name, an earnings code(that is used by our payroll system), and a number(the amount of time in this earnings code) - to name a few.     I need some pointers. My shop sells gelato. There are 80 possible flavours. I am creating a db which tracks production and inventory. I created a list with all flavours, and then every day the worker can check the flavours they produce. I have a field which then counts total number created, time taken etc. But I also want two more things. I want to generate a report at the end of the week, of the number of each flavour created.     Hi Guys, I have a filemaker DB that tracks a list of our vendors and have a second table that tracks each of their satellite offices in each region (predominately for accounting and so on). I have a time/billing database. One table is 'Jobs' (ie projects) and another is Time (where I record time spent on the project). When I spend time on a job I create a new record in time, using the right job number. The tables are of course linked.     I can't figure this one out easily... I have a repeating field, say it's for people's names and has 5 repetitions. I want to display them on a layout as a Merge Field... My question has to do with commas, and periods... If I type: <>, <>, <>, <>, <>. This method will work, but if I only had two names entered in the original field, it would look like this: John Smith, Jane Doe,,,. My question is how to I get it to display the correct grammar, so to speak. I don't know if there's an easy way or if some sort of calculations need to be devised. Any help or suggestions or demos?   21. Hi I have a selector field that is not in the tab order and I made it un-enterable as well. I named the field object "SelectorField". The field is a button that basically ends in a go to object script step that sends the user to the SelectorField object. Problem is it doesn't open the value list, it just puts a black border around the field. Anyone know how to make the value list pop open? I don't want to use go to field because I want to use this script on many screens. (when is Filemaker going to give us go to field name by calculation!!!:)

For example: I have a field, which when is empty, its background-color id red and when its not, bg color is white.     Lables have attached themselves to the tabs of the tab control and everytime I try click them in layout mode to delete them the tab control changes to the page to the one I clicked.How do I delete these lables? How they got stuck: I have a layout with lables and fields on the top 3rd of the page and a Tab control on the bottom.     Just a quick question on container color. I had a container red to match the background then changed the background to yellow and changed the container color again to match it. I have linked the two through "client Id' and if I create a "project ID" field in clients, it shows one of the old project ID numbers.     On my estimate/invoice page that list all past and current estimates, the company name 2 line get cut off -- curious how I fix that? Also, on this page, it's sorting by invoice number.   34. I am not sure if this can be done or not, and I didn't see anything after searching for a topic on it, so I thought I'd ask! Is it possible to have a selection on value list, after selecting it (there are only 3) then navigate you to a particular field on the layout? I would want to keep the selection in the value list, but afterwards, jump to a different field.     I have a layout with header, body, trailing grand summary, and footer. The body has 6 fields, it is not showing all the records it should. I get just one record. I thought I had a relationship issue but I put a portal in the header and it shows all of the records correctly. I am also using sliding/printing so I can print this list view out. Any thoughts why list view gives me just one record but portal shows all the records? I am scrolling and the header and footer stays put. Printing provides the same results.

Typically an audit trail is a text field with a calulation that copies changed data from other fields, concactenates those data, and appends it to previously stored data in the audit trail field.     Here's another example of a larger species of a problem that keeps coming up: I don't quite 'get' how Filemaker prioritizes and applies text formatting. here I have a simple text box for "Title" - set for black 14 pt. Times. Simple enough.     I am generating a PDF from records in the found set. My layout has header, body, and footer parts. The page size is 11" x 15" with .5" margins on all sides. (Custom page size) The header is 1", the footer is .5"; both containing text. Is there a way to have the body records equally spaced, with a rule above and below, to fill the 12.5" available space? (There will never be more than 20 records in the body space.) Initially, I measured the size (in points) of a record including leading and created a "space" field that was placed above and below the data.     I have a purchase order report that the user can print. Right now the report just shows grand totals at the bottom of the last page. This works nicely if there are only a few line items and the report can print on one page. However if the report spans multiple pages it would be nice to have a subtotal of each page at the bottom.     I have a layout I copied that when you view in browse or preview, the related (detail) records show the same records for every row. For example, say there are 10 detail rows for the main header row (linked in a relationship). Instead of showing 10 rows, one per detail line, i get 10 rows of the first detail line.     Help, I have to retrofit an old application that has an invoice layout. In it, I have the master information, that I can load into variables no problem. But when I go to the portal, and try and set the variable data, it keeps using the first records data, even though I use a "select" option with the "Go to Portal Row [select; No dialog; $CurrentPortalRowNum + 1]. $CurrentPortalRowNum is set at the beginning of the loop. I know I'm on the correct portal row because in the debugger, the select highlights it properly. Further, using the data viewer, the $CurrentPortalRowNum is incrementing as required.     I am trying to create a report that has the fields from a record from one database and then selected fields from another database in the body. Actually in the header, I am describing a situation and in the body the individuals from another database to document their responses to the situation that is listed in the header. The two files are not related.     This would solve a problem I'm having with a layout the customer wants to see. I have a "ticket" layout which shows a number of child records (pages) for each ticket record. There are about 3 portals with exactly the same table occurrence relationship each on a different tab of a tab object. My customers use fmp 8 so no object naming. I am trying to find a more effective way to have portals show the correct page without the risk of one showing page 3 whilst the other is still showing page 1.     I'm trying to add a summary or sub-summary (not sure which is appropriate) to a report. I want the sub summary to show a count of different items selected in a drop down list box. What I've tried to do is create a summary field of the drop down list which is a "count of" the field I want to summarize. Then place that summary field in the sub summary layout part. But when I view the report it's just giving me a count of all records in the found set instead of showing me the breakdown.     Hi, I want to have a screen where a user sees two lists of clients, one list is called "include" and the other "exclude". Each client record has a field called include, which is set to 1 or 0. The parent record contains a two global number fields, equalling 1 and 0. These drive the portal relationship. (I know you can do with just one global field and have equal or not equal... but I did it this way for clarity). Clicking a button on either portal switches the value of the include field.     I have 3 fields that contain Name, phone, fax; each field has 6 iterations. Field 1 is a drop down list to allow selection of name. I am trying to get fields 2 & 3 to follow the drop down list for the correct phone and fax no to the invoice. I have just about tried everything to get it to work. Any ideas? TIA

    I have a DB that i have selected a font size of 10 for the fields When i add a new field, i choose the same font, the same size, but it appears so much smaller? I need to change it to size 18 to get it to look like my other previously made fields. Obviously this affects my layout and the field size.. Any help? THanks!

  66. Hi, I have developed a solution on a Mac and it is accessed by both Mac and windows versions of FMP. When moving from one file to another file (ie windows) it works fine on the Mac, however, on windows the newly opened file tends to open within the existing file/window and not full screen as scripted. This is driving my crazy. Is there something obvious that I am missing, or do I have to add the full screen script step into every navigational script to get it to look like the Mac does? Please any help will do....

On the same note, is it possible to execute a JavaScript command in the web viewer without user interaction? In this case it is a search button that needs to be pressed. We are a small railroad and I use this to update our records on a daily basis with car movement and revenue data. The program has been working very well for over a year. However, all of a sudden the data import performance has markedly slowed during the daily data import. What used to take about 90 seconds now takes almost 5 minutes.   72. I am a novice trying to get on my feet. I would like to build a history db for screen only with a list of events on the right (two fields: year and fact). No brain killer... On the left, however, when an event is clicked on the right, I would like that a description of the chosen fact appear like a large note. I could do this, one above the other: the fact description in the header and the list of events in the body. But I would prefer a screen presentation, horizontal, with a list on one side and the description (the whole card in fact) on the other side. Is this possible with FileMaker?

    I am trying to design a layout that will involve billing specific companies on a daily basis for a period of a month at a time. I would like to be able to open a specific company record and have all the dates for one month show up on my layout so that I can add to the billing field each day. I do not want to have to create a new record for each specific day. In other words,for example, I would like to see every day in November show up in a record so that I may place a billing amount next to that day, without having to create a totally new record for each day. I could then generate a summary report at the end of the month for each company. Thanks

    Hi, I have got customers where each customer can have many divisions and in each divsion customer can have many contacts. I have attached the zip file for the purpose. When the application is run you will be able to see 2 customer records. My problem is when i click on Add New contact it displays the contact layout but in the division drop down it does not show the divisions for that particular customer.     I am building a restaurant's reservation system as a VTC 'term project' for our family restaurant. I published 2 posts on this topic in 'relationships' and I will add this one in 'portals' and one in 'layouts'. Basically, I used John Mark Osborne's Calendar tutorial in order to build our 'DAYS' table. Then I created a 'TABLES' table (of the restaurant), a CLIENTS table and a RESERVATIONS table.     I'm creating a script that will send an email getting data from a particular record. As the primary user for this uses Thunderbird, I'm doing this with a open url mailto: script. There are a couple instances where I am trying to insert data from a checkbox set, however instead of there being a carriage return at the end of each option, it just runs them together. For example Option1Option2Option3 Instead of Option1 Option2 Option3 It works fine if I use the regular send mail function, but I can't get it working with the open url function. Thanks! Matt

    I have two tables, table A with a one to many relationship to table B. Table B has 3 fields per record that describe the item. One field is "Category", the second field is "SubCategory1" and the third field is "SubCategory2". In a layout for Table A I want to build a series of 3 value lists that drill down to the item in table B and report in a portal. The top level value list would populate with the Category data, the second level value list would then populate with filtered data based on the category data.     I'm a newbie trying to duplicate a MS Access database. I have a Company layout with the usual fields and at the bottom a row of four tabs (Contact History, Contact Names, Ticklers, Quotes) related to the current Company. I have two portals on the Quotes tab, Quote Header and Quote Detail. One Header field relates to a Company field (both company name) and the Header field Number relates to the Detail field Number. Problem is that all the Detail records for the Company show up in the Detail portal. I want to show only Detail records for the current/active Header record. I don't know how to make that happen -- any help would be greatly appreciated. Loren

    I have a problem with a field maintaining the font size. I have a layout (sales) where I input address information, and the fields are all font size 12. On another layout (label), I have fields that are size 10, as I am printing labels. I can't make the label layout keep the font size 10 - most of the time the font size stays at 12. This usually is due to me pasting information into the fields that are font size 12. Is there a way to tell the field to maintain the font size that I want the layout to have?     Hello, I am hoping that someone has an idea of what I could do to circumvent this problem: I open a document (excel or word) in the webviewer. If during the same session I want to delete the file, it tells me that the file is locked or in use (even if I am no longer looking at the file, the webviewer has been refreshed with another file or it is blank). If I check in task manager, it shows me that excel is running (it's not in my taskbar). It looks like the file stays "in use" even if I exit FileMaker: the only way I found to unlock the file was to log off or end the Excel process in task manager...     Hi everyone I wish to get some data back from a URL...The URL is in the form of a "submission string" and I have correctly formatted the query string parameters to bring back data. The returned data only consists of two lines of text in CSV format - the first being a header. The second is 4 very short fields.
