I have a tabbed layout based on Contacts table. One of the tabs shows two portals. The top portal is based on the relationship between Contacts and Donations (Contacts is the foreign key in Donations). The bottom (second) portal is based on the join table Project Details between Donations and Projects - the join table has Project ID related to table Projects and the Donation ID related to table Donations. The relationship between table Donations and the join table Project details allows for creation of records in that portal. Hi, This is my first post and I am a beginner at FM and at the moment only use is to store and match my data. I primarily work in browse mode but I can only see the first 85 field columns of my data. There are a fair ammount more and I can export them etc but cant see them. It this a limitation of FileMaker Pro (V6 for Mac OSX) or can I change settings. Sorry if this is too basic a question. Matt

Hi, I'm trying to create a new database for my invoicing. I'd like a little advice on "where" or which Table Occurance to make my layout. I've begun familiarizing myself with relational databases and portals but before I go into any details I'll explain my needs. First, I was doing my invoices through Word documents, meaning I would manually enter each time the invoice numbers, client info, and services provided (this as you might know can be redundant if you've worked for the same client before). I have my database set up so a portal returns the results I want to see. The portal will have either one or two records displayed in it. I need to take this data and put it into an email message. Portal shows: Bob Smith Jane Doe In the email message that I'm sending out I want to say "Please contact Bob Smith or Jane Doe." or "Please contact Bob Smith." depending on the number of records showing in the portal. So, I need a way to take the results showing in the portal and combine them into one field so I can put the combined field into my email message. thanks, Hardy

OK, this has to be simple, but I can't figure it out. I want the user to be able to scroll through the records in the Form view, using a "next" button, and a "previous" button. There does not seem to be a script step that makes that happen. (of course, there is the little book thing that we use on the left hand side, but I don't want to use that) I'm able to get it to work as long as the records are sequential, using a global field, and a find.... but that doesn't work when there is a break in the numbers. I’m trying to create a dynamic search using a portal, with some values related to other tables, but I cannot get this to work. Here are the details: I have two tables: PRODUCTS and TASKS. Each product has a Product ID, Customer, and Department. On each product page, I have a portal to the TASKS table in which I can create tasks that automatically inherit the Product ID from the product. I also have a Tasks Search page, which is a tasks layout with a portal to a copy of the TASKS table. Hi I have been using single row portals to fake tab controls in FM 8 (I want to be able to dynamically show or hide tabs, which is not possible using the built in tab control). The tab graphics are displayed from global variables. It was all working well, then I upgraded to 8.0v3 After the upgrade a duplicate of my graphic started to appear under the original for each portal being displayed (looked as though it was a second portal row - however these are only single row portals ) I pulled everything apart, resized it all etc to no avail. I have a portal based on a relationship that is using the ">" symbol to define the range of related records. I am trying to use a button script within the portal to set a field. The script keeps returning the first value of the portal instead of the row that I am clicking on. How can I resolve this problem? Hi. I'm a new user to FileMaker 6.0 on Mac. I've got three databases containing patient information from our rehabilitation centre. All of the databases have clinical information for each patient but we report the information to 3 different insurers. Therefore there are three separate databases (each patient has a patient_id field in each database). I've been toying with this new layout tab control thing with FM8, and I do like what I see. However, I'm trying to make it do something that appears can't be done without some trickery (story of my life) - Is there a way to have a script run (or at least change one field's info) when switching tabs? Or, in other words - how to add a button definition to a particular tab? I thought I would be slick and put an invisible button over the tab(s), but my plans were foiled. I looked at 24U's excellent tab tricks that they have on their site, but it doesn't answer this type of question.

I have a database with 2 tables and 2 layouts. I'd like the fields in the second table to auto-populate with data when a selection is made from the first field. For example: The first table contains records of personal info The second table contains fields for listing that info along with other stuff. My first layout is for data entry for the personal info My second layout contains a pull down menu for last name, and text fields for first name, and title. In my application, I removed all the menu items. This works fine as long as the users are using FM Pro. But if the users install a copy of FM Adv, the 'Tool' command show up at the menu bar. This is no good as users can run some of the developer utilities. I cannot find a way to remove this. Please help.

Hi, I don't know if this is possible, but is there any way you can disbale the "X" (Close Window)button within Filemaker? I just want users to be able to minimise or maximise the window, but not close it. The only way they could close the window, is via a button I create that will perform a script to close the window. This is not as a runtime version also. This is only closing windows within Filemaker, not closing the filemaker application. Thanks

Please refer to my relationship diagram. I'll just talk about one field whose records I want to repeat. If I can make one work, then I'm Rn my way. refer to the upper left-most table, specifically the Well field, or in Filemaker speak, "[Wells].[Well]" and to the second table from the left, specifically [Royalties].[OwnerId]. Hello. I have a donation table where each time a client donates I create a new record for each input. I would like to create a List layout where each client's totals are summed up. I do have a sum field set up to grab. My problem is that when I try creating a list, it lists each time that one person donated. I would like for the table to list the person *once* along with their total donation and not as many times as they have donated. Sorry if this is a repeat topic. I couldn't find an answer. Is this possible? I presently have 3 layouts with specific portals on each showing a production schedule for 1 of 3 pieces of equipment. Each layout refers to a specific relationship I have created and they all work fine. When I try to put 3 portals on one layout, I am stuck. :P I have a layout with a Header, a Body, (consisting of one line horizontally) a Sub-summary (trailing), another Sub-summary (trailing), and a Trailing Grand Summary. In the first (highest) Sub-summary I have a Summary field and a Date field under which there is a .5 pt. rule above a 1 pt. rule. If there is an amount of records sorted that would continue on the next page, I would like the report to break after the 1 pt. rule. In other words the groups of sorted records (in this case by date) should not go across two pages. How does one accomplish this? Any help will appreciated. Thanks.

I have a table called Bands that has a single field called BandLetter populated with 'a' to 'z' one letter for each record. I have another table called Blocks that has various fields and a field called BandLetter that is linked to the Band table. I want to choose a band letter from the table Bands for each record in the table Blocks. I have tried to make a drop down, pop up, value list (although I'm not sure a value list is what I want. Anyway I can't do it or it wont work. I am a complete beginner and hope this is not too silly a question.

Hey everybody, Quick question. I have a layout that uses the "Company" table as its main table. In this layout, however, I have a portal that displays data from the "ToDoList" table. I have buttons mapped to the portal that call a script when you click on them. A parameter is passed to the script that contains the "primary key" of the "ToDoList" record that the user clicked on. So the primary key may be "8", but the actual record may only be 5th in the list. Application layouts have grown exponentially due to several designers working at once; now, with over 200 layouts, we need to put them into some kind of order. I'm new to FM7, I've created an inventory DB. I want to use the "Invoice Detail" layout containing a portal for creating an invoice but every time I enter data for the invoice it disappears on me, it shows up on my "Item Detail Information" layout but not on the "Invoice Detail" portal. I'm getting very confused as to the relationships of portals/ layouts/ tables, the more I try to fix it the more confused I get, I've included a stripped down version of my file, can anyone shed some light as to what I'm doing wrong. ok... basically I want to display a portal, but I only want it to diplay unique values, I am not sure if that makes sense though. Here's the setup. We have multiple database files. one for inventory, one for orders, one for contacts, one for service contracts, etc. for orders, for example, we have to enter the item numbers of the parts. There is a drop down value list that has our inventory item number and the description. Hi, I am integrating a Contact Log into my database. There is a Recontact Date field that shows the date, in the future, that you are supposed to contact someone. I'm displaying all the data in a portal right now. If the recontact date 2 days in the future or sooner, I want a button on the left of the line in the portal to appear red. If the recontact date is within a week, I want the button to appear yellow. If the recontact date is more than week in the future, I want the button to appear green. I know how to calculate the date, but I dont know how to make the button change colors. How do I do this?

I've just completed a database but have a few outstanding issues... 1) If I leave a layout with a tab control and then come back to it from another layout why does the first layout not remember what tab it was on? It ends up on a different tab, how can this be fixed? 2) With a portal in a tab and each time I create a record in that portal the tab control will jump to another one of its tabs, why is this behavior? I have a container field that changes color depending on the value of another field. If the field current status = "in process", this container field turns yellow. This container field lives at the back of a list type layout and highlites the whole record based on status condition. So far, so good. I would like to have this container field highlight individual rows of a portal. If any record within that portal is "in process", I would like that portal row to turn yellow. I have a solution with over 100 layouts. I'm trying to organize the layout list so that the developer(s) can easily find things. I have some dummy layouts that are named "----- Reports -----" and "---- Data Entry ---- " etc. This helps visually organize the layouts. I'm using Mac OS X and FM 8 Advanced. However, I'm having a hard time figuring out the type-ahead behavior. For example, I have layouts named "Worker.Contact", "Worker.Financial", and "Worker.best" . If I click the Layouts popup and start typing "worker" it will jump to "Worker.best" which is third in the list. I wish it would jump to the first "worker" layout instead. …

Here is what I was envisioning: -- Data entry tabs and other layouts for data entry or editing -- Reports or forms that print out from populated data (many related tables) My users are accustomed to being able to edit reports/forms prior to printing. Is that normal? It gets complicated, because of portals (containing historical data) and other things that I have yet to implement and have no idea how that would work if they enter straight onto the form. I have no idea what type of field I would use for this, its just a shot in the dark. I want to duplicate a record that has portal records on the layout. Only the main record duplicated, the related portal records did not duplicate. I can understand why, but why isn't there a function or script step that lets me include the related portal records too? Perhaps a person more familiar with portals and FMP8 has accomplished this already. The main record and the portal are related using a primary key and foreign key relationship using just one unique field that is serialized.

i made a potal on a related layout. layout has a bunch of global feilds with choicec(check boxes) i made a script that for every option choosen the script goes to the last row of hte portal (the entry row) and puts in info... i have everything checked that i would need to, to make new records through a portal...and my relation ship is good because i can see records that are already there. it gives me the same error message as when you try to edit a calculation feild...but none of the feilds are calc feilds...help please

I am a newbie to forums and relatively new to FM. I seem to be suffering a recurring FM issue and need some advice. I have a "people" database containing names and address info. Not surprisingly I have some records of people who have the same name, but obviously different addresses. My problem is, when I view the list of people via a pop-list in a portal in another database it only displays one occurence of an individuals name, even though there could be 2 or 3 people with the same name. I have a pop-up menu that disappears after selection on Windows but not Mac machines running on Server 8. The menu is visible until the user selects a menu choice. Hi, I am updating a Filemaker Pro database file version 5 i think (.fp5) I was working at the office on a mac in filemaker pro version 6v.4 to make changes to the current database. Hello, I have a datbase of talk show guests, however I need to input 5-10 different contact numbers and email addresses per guest. I tried this when I first started with FM and I used repeating fields, not going that way now. I want to use a portal, however how can I do this with a self-join relationship when there are over 25 other fields besides the email address or telephone number fields? I have a Value List assigned to a Field as a Pop-up Menu. The Value list looks at a Field in another Table. That other Table has several Records. Ok i have the following two tables. Member(Name,Country,Points,Ranking,Season ID) Seasons(Name,Comment,Season ID) I have also created a self link from season to season based on Season ID,using a second occurence/copy of the season table(Seasonscopy).I changed the relationship from '=' to 'x'(ie match all records.) Hello, I am trying to find the value of the field Full Name (located in a portal row) in standard field(which is in ValueList format). i.e. Case ( DB1::Full Name = DB2::CombinedFullName; "Yes, the value of Full Name does exist somewhere in the field CombinedFullName; "No, the value of Full Name does NOT exist anywhere in the field CombinedFullName" ) If only one value exists in CombinedFullName, then it comes back true, otherwise it doesn't find it. I created a report layout that uses meeting dates as a break field, displays the items reviewed on that date, then shows a summary field (count) of the items in the trailing sub-summary section. This layout works great and is nicely formatted, so I duplicated and modified it in order to start on a second report. The second report uses manufactured part numbers as its break field, and a "Total Of" summary field in the trailing sub-summary section. I know somebody must have experienced this already... When entering a new record from the file represented by the portal, the record is not visible in the portal until I go to another layout and come back. What am I not doing at the close of the file? This db was first written in FM5, converted to 8 and uses separate files not tables.

I would like to have a radio button set to a specific value if another field is between a certain set of values, ie, between 2 and 5, the radio button is set to a certain text value to give the user a general guess as to what the proper radio button selection is (with their ability to override it). I followed the article on Filemaker Advisor to make fields for each tab and then you can script Go To navigation. I made the fields tiny and untoggled "allow editing in both Find and Browse mode". On the main menu, a button goes to the Data Entry layout and tab 1. When that button is pushed… the cursor is blinking and if I don’t tab out, I can type in the field. What did I miss? I would like to prevent this field from being populated by mistake. Your advice is very appreciated.

Hello again ! Is it possible to use an autocomplete function via relationship ? I have one table that is used to select a person. A person id-number is a key field to person database. I wanted to keep it simple and have just one field to fill in id and below that a portal which shows matching names when id is written. correct me if im wrong. i have a printable layout, in which i use a title header (there is infor i only want on the first page) and then a normal header (same info as the title header just less of it) and then a body. I've been using the same database program (that I wrote) for over a year. It has 4 related tables: 1)BORROWERS 2)NOTES 3)EXCEPTIONS 4)COLLATERAL. I own a company that provides examinations to commercial banks. The tables are all linked with "BORROWERNUMBER" field, a unique field for each borrower in the bank. Hello, I am trying to construct a database and invoicing system for my dad's small business. I want to be able to make something like a dynamic repeating field of entries for the line-item part of the invoice. As it is right now, the Started Solution I am using allows for up to 8 rows of line-item input. If I fill in 3 rows, it still print out the other 5 rows as empty, which looks very impersonal. I want the invoice to be able to automatically trim the maximum repeated fields to the minimum amount of field that I have actually filled in. Hi! I have a database with many layouts. Each layout has the same title text, graphics, and buttons across the top. As it stands, if I ever want to change any part of that, I have to go through and change each layout, one by one. Is there some way to put this title text, etc. in some sort of header, so that if I change it once, it changes on every layout? Thanks!

I have a transparent portal that I have overlaid over a photographic background image. Whenever I switch between records the entire portal momentarily flashes white. If I fill the portal with a color the flashing goes away but it totally ruins the appearance of my design. Are there any tricks for eliminating this flashing problem?

Is it possible to vary the color of the text value of a calculation field according to what the calculation returns? I have constructed a database of commodity price movements. One field "Direction" returns "up" or "down". Is there some way to color "up" blue and "down" red? Of course if "up" and "down" had their own fields, I could easily do this in Layout, but that's not what I want. I also have various calculation fields returning the ANSI character ▲ or ▼. I'm a beginner and need some assistance. I have a student database with multiple related tables. One of these tables is a test scores table. The testscores table has multiple rows for a student. The rows have a student id (key), test id (e.g. SAT or ACT), test component (e.g. Verbal, Math, etc) and a test score. Rows - e.g. one row with 0001 SAT Verbal 800, another row with 0001 SAT Math 800, another row with 0001 SAT COMPOSITE 1600. I can display this test info in a portal for each student, but I want the test info displayed in table so I can export it to Excel as one record for each student. Where do I start?

I have a summary field which displays the total of values in related records. However, if any field is selected for editing on this layout, the summary field value doesn't appear when I move on to the next record. I assume that this is because the summary field can't store the results of the calculation. I can only get the summary value to reappear if I: - deselect all fields for editing - move to another record then back again, with no fields selected. Is there any way to make the summary field's value stay on screen for subsequent records I visit without having to do the above?

I'm not exactly sure where to approach this from, i don't usually work with multiple windows. I want to put in a progress bar on file open, seeing as it actually takes around 15 sec to open on a lan now and 30 or so externally, i think it's reasonable to put one in. I'm not exactly sure how to go about this however. What happens at the moment is the following: The fileopens, the window is resized to a login size, and a lot of jumping around layouts (while window is frozen of course) setting globals through relationships etc etc. occurs. What I am trying to do is have a conditional value list on my sites search page. Each client logs in, then when they access the search page they get a value list in the site field showing each site we do work at. The problem is the speed. the database has about 110,000 records and it takes 2-4 minutes to load the search page because each time it needs to gather the value list. I've been playing around with filtering portals using the "all" option. Two tables, a one and a many (say client and invoices). I'm relativly new to filemaker (about 2 months now). I'm trying to make a layout with a dozen different tables on it summarizing different aspects of someones work. In a simple Invoice table/LineItems table scenario I want to prevent the entry of duplicate product IDs in a portal based on LineItems table. This is to keep the user from choosing twice the same product code on the same invoice. I've been swimming circles around this conditional VL problem for a while, and just can't seem to figure it out. I'm attempting to put together a bidding/proposal program. I've got my product line broken down by category and subcategory. I have a portal which allows the creation of new records. The user enters some of the data in the portal (eg Name, Position). I use a go to related record script which opens another layout in a new window to allow the user to add the other details (eg address, phone etc). The problem is that the record in the new layout cannot be modified because it is being modified in the first window. This only happens when adding a new record - it works fine if I only want to modify an existing one. Is there a simple solution? Sorry if this has been asked and answered before. I tried searching for a solution, but didn't find one. In going from 6 to 7, I combined about 10 databases into one. The letter layouts from each of those 10 databases are being used in the new database. This creates a huge list when you look at the layouts. Is there a way to manage the layouts with folders like in a favorites list in a web browser? Or is it possible to attach certain layout names to one layout like a donations layout would only display the names of various thank you letters. Thanks for any help John

We currently have a database that stores hundeds and hundreds of constantly changing tasks as individual records with a start and end date. Our problem is that we require a more visual gantt style interface for data entry than filemaker can provide. We need a view that has name and task in the first two columns with each subsequent column representing a dynamically generated daily date. A task range would be represented by a range of 1's.
