Value Lists

I have no idea what I did but I have managed to loose all my value lists. Is there any way to recover them? Or import them. whilst keeping the orginal names and references I have a back up copy of all value lists in another saved database but I am unsure on how to import them? I can use from another file but they do not keep the same name. Can anyone help?? Ben

Hi I've had a little search around but can't find a definitive answer to this one. Is it OK to set up a value list and receive entries to that list on the same field? It seems to work fine but just wanted to check that it was good practice. So when you click on the field you can either choose from the drop down list, or you can type in a new entry. When you move onto the next record the entry you just typed appears as an option. Hope that makes sense, Many thanks, Rosie

I have a value list containing clients. There is an edit option to add new clients as they come in. However, when they appear on the pop up list for entry into a timesheet, they appear in the order they were entered. Is there any way to have them appear alphabetically? Thanks in advance.

Hi FM Community, I moved all our files from FM7 to FM8 and after that successful move I ran into an issue with our value lists. When I enter the values in a value list and then view them in field it cuts off the words randomly in the value lists. So in the Define Value lists I enter "Directory 08" and it displays "Directo" Then a little down in that list I have entries like "Jan/Feb", "March", etc. When it displays these values I get "Jan/Fe" "March", etc. The values are cut offs randomly, it is not a specific number of characters, or specific character or a space that it cuts off. Any help on this would be great, I'm stuck. I have a project table that connects to a location table with a join table. Locations can belong to multi projects. I then have a media table that connects to the project table with a join table. A single media file can belong to many projects. I have portals viewing and creating all these records...works fine. Hi I have this problem with retro fitting Combo felds with value list and using pop up list Attached is a clone of the data base My problem is that my data base is growing I can not remember by Client ID with Client name or Project name with project ID and reference. I have a portal in my sales database for event registration (date, event, qty, payment info, etc.) The events field is a value list, drop-down menu with many choices. This is related to my contacts database. (One contact may register for many different events). First, I want to be able to find everyone who's registered for a specific event (ie "farm tour"). Hello I've just started using FileMaker 8.5. I have a field in a table which is a Checkbox set. When the user enters data - they can select single or multiple items from the set. For example: Receipt, Invoice, Waybill. (This checkbox set is populated by another table with up to 100 records) The trouble I have is when I change to a print layout, the field displays the checkbox set with the selected items as well as the non-selected items - is there any way to hide the items that are not selected?

I have a DB in which I have a drop down list displaying a primary key field from a related table. Although the primary key uniquely identifies the record, it is just a serial number and not very user friendly. So I created a calculation field that combines the vaules from a few different text fields to help describe the record better. I then attempted to "display values from second field" using the calculation field, but FileMaker gives me this message: "This value list will not work because this field cannot be indexed..." I have a database called cars which lists the vehicle year, make, model and engine. On the customer database I have fields for year, make model and engine. I have a bunch of fields that are Drop-Down Lists and works great. However I want the user only to be able to select values in the drop-down list. I know that If I use a Pop Up menu this will force the user to select a value in the list. However I do not like the design of the field Itself. I would prefer to have the same layout of a Drop-Down List (borders and arrow to the right). I tried to leave the Pop Up menu with no stroke and draw everything manually on top of it, but when I click the field, everything I drew is sent behind it and I can no longer see it. Hello, we have fm database with all our company emloyees. In each record, there is also field Category and SubCategory. I would like to be able to print list of all emploees sorted by Category and Subcategory. But we are changing these Category and SubCategory often, so is it somehow possible to soft it manually? Like if I can somehow sort Categories and SubCategories and print it?

How can I display in a Value List only the records that correspond to a certain value (ex: active) instead of displaying all the records. Here's my scenario: A field named "coach_name" in table "Players" displays a drop-down list showing all coach names coming from table named "Coaches". This works fine for the moment. Now, I would like this Value List to display only the records for which field "Status" in table "Coach" would be equal to "active", so that it only lists active coaches, not all of them. Hi All, This is my first post on this forum. Is it possible to get a list to pop-up based on another list. What I have is as follows: Manufacturer eg Sony which in turn has many models So, if Sony is choosen from a pop-up list (Manufacturers)then another pop up appears (models) with just all the models for that particular manufacturer. Also, it is a app for a print house. In the table A i must make calculations for the print cost. In the table B i have papers. 15-20 paper manufacturer. Every manufacturer has a couple kind of papers, and the papers have various weights. Its should bee possible, in table A field 1, to choose all of the manufacturer. I'm working on my first FM DB and am trying to setup a DB that will pre-populate a field based upon what is entered into another field. For example, I want the DB to fill out the name and address fields based upon what is entered into the 'type' field. So, if I enter "Water" in this field I'd like all of the address information automatically entered, but remain editable should I wish to make changes manually. My tiny FM app only has one DB. Hello im having a valuelist + calculation field issue. When I change information in my valuelist field (in a portal) my calculation fields not updating unless I click on a blank spot on the record. As you can see in figure 1 (image below), I have a field that shows how many related contacts are per location (in blue and underlined). I have viewed the tutorial files on Related Fields Pt 1 and Pt2. The problem I am having is that I only get the first name to show in the list of customers full names. How do I get the other names to show? I have viewed the videos about a dozen times and must be missing something, but I sure don't know what it is.

I've got one for ya: Setup - Two Databases (Employee and Bug) - Records in the Bug db have an Employee field - This field uses a Value List that looks at the Employee field in the Employee db via the "Use value list from another file" Value List option - The Employee db has a field called Status that is marked either "Current" or "Former". In several layouts and Value Lists, the Employee db shows only "Current" employees by scrips that run a find for "Current". Question Can I have the Value List in the Bug db show only "Current" employees so I don't have to maintain two Employee Tables in both databases?

hi all, i'm inputting data from a survey of visitors to a store. one of the questions asks which items they preferred over others--visitors can select none, one or more or all. this requires a CHECKBOX value list. i want to create a summary of how many check marks every item received. how do i do this? essentially, i want to create a count/summary of occurences of each item in a value list. how do i do this? thanks so much!!

I'm trying to set up a check box and timestamp feature to the database so we know when things moved from graphics into production or in production to shipping, like that. What I'm trying to do is when one of the checkboxes is clicked it updates a timestamp for that specific job (Going from graphis to production). I've tried a few things and I can't seem to get it, all my timestamps update together. I know I'm missing a step in here to seperate them but keep them on one page. Help?

Disclaimer: I'm an Access person, but my boss set up a FileMakerPro 5 document/database to collect survey data, and now it's my job to figure out how to extract and slice & dice the data. We have over 50 questions that asked people to choose A, B, or C. A,B & C were entered in FMP as a value list, and each question was given a field with the person doing the data entry choosing the appropriate answer from the value list. Now I need to know how many people answered A, how many B, etc. for every single one of these questions. I've written a runtime solution that has two fields, TailNumber and SerialNumber. As it is, I have a Case calculation in the SerialNumber field so that if a user selects a particular tail number from TailNumber's pop-up list, its serial number autofills the SerialNumber field, e.g., selecting N908FX will autofill the SerialNumber field with MSN-114. The problem is, since it's a Case calculation it's "hard-coded" into the database so users can't enter new tail numbers where the serial number will autofill. So, is there a way I can get around this problem in the master file so it'll work in the runtime solution? As always, thanks in advance for your help!

Hi, I'm having a real problem that makes my head hurt! I'm trying to set up a value list that uses values from a field - e.g. field1 = make of car, field2 = model, so that the value list for field2 depends on the entry (from a static valuelist) for field1. I've set up a series of global fields with all the possible values for field2 and defined a holding field as a calculation based on the value for field1. This seems to work in that the holding field correctly returns the values from the appropriate global field but it doesn't work as a valuelist in that it returns spurious values from more than one of the global fields. Hi all - Is it possible to trigger a script when a new value is chosen from a pull-down list? I tried making a transparent button that sits over the list box (like you do over a portal row), but then I could only click the button and had no access to the pull-down list. If I put the button only over the arrow for the pull-down, then I could pull down the list, but the button wouldn't work. I would like to have the script triggered every time a new value is chosen from the list. Any ideas? Thanks, Jeff

For some reason my pop-up menu only shows the first record of a list vales derived from another field in another table. I selcted roleID and the second field is RoleName. I have Include All values selected and show only second field. There are two record in the table. But only the first displays. Anyone know why? Thanks

I can't find a way to do this: create a value list using the contents of four different global text fields from within the same table. I know my answer is somewhere in this forum, but after looking at 10 or more posts and sample files I cant seem to find my answer. I have 2 tables, a Company table and a Employee Table. The employees are in different categories. What I want to do is have 3 PopUp menu fields that return the Employee Number back to the Company Table. I currently use a pop up menu to display a number of items from a value list. When I select the menu it displays a long single column list that I have to scroll through to reach the bottom. Is it possible to change the format so that it is displayed in perhaps two or three columns? This way all the values will fit on the screen at the same time. I have tried a pop up list but this takes a very long time to display.

After quite a bit of searching and all, what I'm trying to accomplish is for an auto body repair shop, but I need to allow for selection of the year (which is in the vehicles table and a field called years with two digit values separated by a space ie: '00 01 02' but I need to be able to select a year for instance, 00, then it'll allow me to select a make, so all the makes (makes field within the same table) availible under year 00 will show. I am working on a small (10 K records) database, and have encountered a problem that I hope is a programming oversight, and not data corruption. There are two files, with a many to many link created in a third. File one: people. File two: events. File three: join file. In the events file, to add a new person to an event, I have created a value list made up of the letters of the alphabet. How do I do this? I have an ID and a Persons name. I want to show the the names when some selects the drop-list BUT use the related ID stored to the field. I have a list of users and each has a field for either director or vp. I want to built a value list for both. In otherwords, I want one list with only those whose value is "yes" for vp and the same for director. Is there a way to make a series of conditional value lists? By that I mean, if I pick a term in the value list attached to the primary field, can all the related values pop up in the second field? And in the third, fourth, etc? Hi there, Sorry if this has been covered, i could find it anywhere. I'm very new at this and this is my first Database. I've created a task data base for my work. Basically what I want is to be able to show how many days/Mb are left to complete on a per project and per priority basis. The project and priority are set by selecting from a value list pop up menu. So something like: Project A has 200 days of high priority tasks left, 100 med tasks and 300 low priority tasks. Then something similar for the memory lists. Hi, first post on the board. haven't been using filemaker very much although a lot seems somewhat intuitive. my problem is as follows: I have a database with 70k+ posts in a table with 8 columns. let's refer to the columns as A, B, C.. etc. I want to be able to print the results of a search but instead of trying to fit all 8 columns next to each other on a letter sized paper with lots of redundant information if only the A column changes between the posts, I want to use checkboxes. Has anyone else experienced problems with popup menu's or drop down lists not popping up? We have two Mac's (G5 PowerPC OSX 10.3.9 and iMac OSX 10.4.7) on which the ‘GoTo Field’ script step does NOT pop-up the value list. Drop-down lists are OK, it’s just the pop-up menus. On PC's both types of list pop-up with the 'GoTo Field' step. However we did have one PC (running XP Pro) stop popping-up on lists and menus and I don’t know why. I think it went into Standby or Hibernation because the user left it on overnight and a complete restart fixed the problem. The PC problem could just be a fluke, but the Mac problem is annoying. Having difficulty describing the problem: I would like to be able to select a field, begin typing the first 1 2 or 3 letters of, let's say, the persons first name and then be able to select from a shorter list of names rather than having to do a traditional "find" There are solutions all over the place on websites. For example, when you enter your state for online purchases, you can type in the letter "N" and it will take you names in that list that begins with the letter "N" and so on. I am working with 10 different schools' voluteer groups. The database is used to track volunteer hours. Each group from the ten locations uses the same form, but the volunteer value list for each location is different. i'm transforming my db from a strictly portuguese one to a tri-lingual one. now i have some valuelists defined with values in portuguese. in the multilingual future of our company, we need to add records in all three languages and not all of our employees will be able to understand all of the languages. Furthermore, in the search function, the results should include all the records in all the languages, p.e. searching for "empresa" should also bring up all the records filed under "company". I have been reading through the posts here and searching all the resource sites, but I can't seem to find an example closest enough to my needs to get it figured out. It seems like it should be fairly simple, but I just can't wrap my head around it. I want to show a value list based on the result of a first choice, but I want the 2nd value list come from one of two tables depending on the 1st choice: So... The person chooses "all" or "by building" or "by person" in the first list. If they choose "by building" they would get a list of buildings which are stored in the building table. If they choose "by person" they get a list of names from the name table.

The stock item (Finished Stock inventory table)has 2 substrate fields (Sub1 and Sub2) which it can be re-output on. To re-output the stock item...user must raise new order (new orders table). I was hoping for some help on a quoting solution I am working on. I am using Filemaker 8.0v3. In my database I have 2 tables I have linked which are Dealers and Quotes. In the Dealers table I have a number field called DealerNumber, its a number I assign to a dealer and then I have a field called DealerName. Let's say I have a static value list that contains: Cat Dog Mousse Is it bad if I then change the order to be: Mousse Cat Dog I know that if you change the actual values (ie., took out mousse and put in bird) it won't update any fields that have the previous value (mousse). I know how to sort values in a value list- this is very straightforward. But how do I have FM sort the values inversely? I want to do this because I am populating the value list by the values of a related field with about 75 values and want to avoid having to scroll to the end, which is where the most recent and most sought records would live. I have two tables: Products and Photos. Each Product has a unique ProdID, and each related picture has a ProdID for its corresponding product. ProdID is, obviously, the match key. Here's the question: On a product page, I would like to show the first picture from the related Photos table in a small window. Next to the picture, I would like to supply forward and backward buttons to thumb through each related picture in the Photos table. How can this be done? It seems portal-ish, but I'm not sure how I'd get the single-row portal to thumb through the related pictures. I need to create a value list that holds a name and an ID. The value list is to be attached to a drop down menu and I'd like only the names to show up in this drop down, but when selected I'd like the ID to be actual value that gets passed. I'm working with eBay store categories, so for example, category ID 5452 = Canon. I'd like the name Canon to show up in the list in Filemaker, but the ID 5452 to be passed as it's value. I have photographs which show based on a relationship of two keywords (by using a relationship back to two global fields). The valuelist of first field is based on values on the keyword of the daughter table (building name). The value list for the second global field (the building storey) is created with a self joining relationship of the first keywords. Unfortunately the valuelist only works once the relationship has been resolved and have manually typed the correct second keyword. Hope that makes sense. Is there any way around this? Thanks

I have an Invoice table and a Payment table with a join table in the middle: INVOICE ------ PAYMTDETAILS ------ PAYMENT. In the PaymtDetails portal on Payment layout I have InvID set as drop down list based on a value list. The VL is built on a second TO of Invoices linked to Payment by custmer ID (gCustID in Paymt = CustID in Invoices2) to allow me to filter the VL by customer. It is working fine. I tried to improve on this by wanting to further filter the VL to show only invoices that have a balance left (gCustID = CustID AND gAmount in Payment < InvBalance in Invoice). GOAL: to set up a field in which I can add multiple values that cannot be predetermined; the values would be added at the "new record" stage and could be modified over time. For each specific record, there could be some with no values in the field and others with several. Then I'll want to sort and list the records for specific values. I'v got a delimina that I need a little help! Right now I've a a field for called "plated_for" that is a pull down value list. Some times each record could have more then one item choosen in the "plated_for". When printing I would like for the field to show each item that was choosen seperated by a /. example. if "plated_for" has 525 and the 840 selected then it needs to show it as 840/525. can this me done or is there a better way to go about this! Hi, I'm having a little problem with a conditional checkbox. Basically, I have 2 tables (Staff & JobRoles) and want to have a check box in the staff table which gets it values from the JobRoles table but conditional on a field in in the staff table that has the persons current qualification level. So, if a user selects say level 2 as the qualification level, the checkbox shows all level 1 and level 2 roles. The roles available would then increase as the person becomes more qualified. I have a LineItems table linked to Inventory table (ItemRefNbr=ItemRefNbr). In Inventory table I have a Status field (calc field) with the following formula: Case(not IsValid(LINEITEMS::ItemRefNbr);ItemRefNbr). The Status field shows ItemNbr only for Items not sold yet. When I try to create a value list on the Status field (to show unsold items only), FM won't let me. There would be a main database that would hold all the fields necessary for what I want to keep track of. Hi all.. I'm having a big problem developing a "Fast letter create" solution. My goal is to get it done by a layout which is divided in several parts like salutation, content, closing and finalisation of the letter, where the user can click a selection-field and select a pre-defined value. So far, so easy. But now the problem consists in the fact that this Value-List must be influed by several parameters; language, topic etc. (e.g. Only values on the right language, amd of the right topic must be displayed). hello, I work for a large University and lately I've been scanning slides and putting them into FMP 7. I'm using the photo catalog to display the slides. The issue I'm having is it takes forever and a day to display the images. My question is how can I speed that up, and is it possible to make the default viewing mode "List View?" If it is, is it also possible to make it so that the only way they can see the slides blown up is for them to download them? Also the file sizes for the pictures are about 3 megs. I am creating a set of pop up menus that are part of my Dynamic Values Lists and was wondering if it is possible to get the first box under the list not to be automatically selected when I use check boxes. For example. I have a field called country, and I can select USA, Canada, Mexico, etc. If I use the check box layout once I click on USA, the first state checked is Alabama. hi! i got a database with a valuelist for different interests that i want to link ta another valuelist in the same table. depending on what value you choose from the first valuelist, different value (are suppose to) appear in the other valuelist. for example: sports --> basketball crafts --> arts that is, if i choose sports arts should not appear. ive got all the valuelista and field defined, i just need to link them. am i suppose to use a linking within the same table? thanks...

I'm constructing layouts where I hide the status area and don't want the user to use. The users still would like an omit checkbox and symbols drop-down. I made a separate find layout to place these items on, but I'm not sure how to construct them or get them to work...or if there is an easier way. (I'd like to stay away from plugins if possible.) Basically I want the diaglog to ask 'What is this persons location' and then the user can select one answer from a given value list (which then becomes the 'location' field). I'm trying to create a value list for use in a popup. Each record is a company, and each company has up to eight locations, each location name defined by a separate field in the record. Now, I see from examples in this forum that I can create a new table, linked by a primary key (say, Company ID), and then create a new record with the primary key and the field value for each location in order to make a popup list. That's fine. But is it possible to keep the field values directly within the company's record, so that I don't have to make a separate table for the locations? Hi im trying to get my value list to work where I have a main date field where a customer selects a particualr date. Then after they select a date there is a value list where the user has to chose what kind of reservation the reservation is. ie. birthday party, corporate, fundraiser etc. Once the two fields have been selected the third field, is so the user can choose what time the reservation is for. Keep in mind that the time slots are different depending on what day of the week it is and what kind of reservation is chosen. It seems that it's not possible to replace the content of a field with a value list by a calculated result. I have two fields in my solution called "Status" and "Commercial status". My Commercial status field has value list that reflect the overall status of the job (in progress, to invoice and finished). I would like to have these values changed by a calculation based on the status field. My calculation is like the Case(num_jobs::totalprint<"1";"To invoice";"In progress") But nothing happens! I am new to Filemaker Pro and found your site extremely useful for making a conditional drop down menu. My question is How do i make three conditional drop down menus. For example, in the first category, I choose a type of food (meat, vegitable) if i choose meat, my choices are (fish, beef, chicken, pork) if i choose beef, the third drop down will be populated with a host of dishes with meat as its primary ingredient (peppercorn steak, beef bourgninon, BBQ beef ribs, etc). I'm newish to FM7 and I need to create some calculation or summary fields (not sure which) for a report I need to build. I have a field in my set of 1000 or so records that is a drop-down box with the defined values "yes" and "no". I want to be able to count how many of the 1000 records show "yes" and how many records show "no"? I appreciate anything you could offer.
