I came across this article in the KB: 7071 Miscellaneous Behavior Changes in FileMaker Pro 10 It has some interesting content: in particular I was interested in the Get( LastODBCError ) In FM9 and before, when the import was all good, the error returned was "00000", but it seems now with FM10 that the result is "empty". Anyone else has noticed this? or is it documented somewhere?

This forum is just as much over my head as filemaker is! Please bear with me as I am very new to FMP. We have 3 iMacs in our office and one host the filemaker database. As of right now it is setup to connect to remote with the internal ip of the iMac on the network. One problem I have is filemaker has to open and running all the time on the main host machine. If not the others can not open it. Is there a way to host the database independent of filemaker? I hate to bring this up but when we used MS Access it was a database file that sat on a hard drive of one of the pc's and all could access it via a shortcut. This was VERY convenient! Made backing up a lot easier also. …

I am trying to highlight the active field using the new GetFieldName() function: Get (ActiveFieldTableName) & "::" & Get (ActiveFieldName) = GetFieldName ( Self ) I have the same formula attached to a tooltip. FMSA10 / Mac OSX10.5 running IWP. I have replaced the IWP Homepage with my own very simple HTML page with hard links to my IWP Databases. All works fine but... The placed graphics in my HTML page do not display! I built the page with Dreamweaver and it displays fine when opened directly in a browser. The page even displays properly when I double click the actual HTML file inside the Library/Filemaker Server/Web Publishing/IWP folder - but when I open the served file (via the /fmi/iwp address) the graphics link is broken. Hi, I hope this topic is not duplicated but am I to understand that I cannot attach my custom scripts to the New Record, Show All, Sort, etc. button icons in the toolbar? In other words I want my new record script to go to the assigned field or object in every table layout. Am I also to understand that I cannot decide which icons shall be available in every table layout, or in other words if I choose New Record in table A, I cannot choose to delete New Record icon in Table B? I am trying to get filemaker to load databases from an external volume. I have an alternate location setup for the filemaker databases, but, when I boot the machine, Filemaker loads the databases in the default location, but not in the alternative location. However if I stop the database server and the start it, everything loads. I suspect filemaker may be launching before the external driver gets mounted at boot. I would like to delay the launch of filemaker on boot. I called tech support and they did not have any ideas on how to do this. Filemaker tech support did give me the command line start/stop. I'm having troubles with the Open Remote function in Filmaker 9 Advanced on Leopard. When I choose this command, nothing happens. One would expect a window with access to FM servers and remote files, but nada... It works fine on 3 other (Tiger) machines that access the same server. I've chekced my firewall settings, checked if something is blocking port 5003. I've reinstalled FM again from the cd. The first time I hit the Open remote command, Leopard asked me if FM remote connections should be allowed. I did allow this. I've even turned off the firewall. Still no luck. This is driving me mad! Any suggestions?

Installed Filemaker Pro 10 Trial. During the extraction of files I noticed the grayed-out path pointed to C:Program FilesIBMLotusNotesData. Installation added a folder called FMICD at that location that now contains the install files for FMP 10. No User or System variables point to that location. Made a bug report at Filemaker.com Has anyone else seen this kind of behaviour

It appears there is a change with 10 that I discovered when running a script. In a list view layout with header / body / grand summary / footer, the grand summary will stretch to fill the gap between the header and footer depending on how many body rows there are. If you omit all records from the found set all you will see is the header / grand summary / footer. In this space I have used either a field or web viewer - calculated to show record count or "End of List" or "No Records Found" occasionally add a button. As i don't mind the user landing on a list with zero found. However in 10 it appears that the sort operation is evaluated even when the found…

In version 9, the Text Formatting toolbar had buttons for Increase/Decrease Font Size, Single/Double Space, and - most importantly - Custom Space which provided quick access to the Paragraph setup window. All these are missing from the new formatting bar in v.10.

Hi, I'm very new to filemaker pro and am having some problem with relationships. I'm trying to make a database based on an elderly care facility, one table has the names of the residents ("Resident Info" Table, their address and the date they came into the care home, and the other is a table with details of people who pay for those individual residents("payee" table). I have been playing around with FM 10 Advanced on a Mac G4 and I have FM Server 9 on a G5 with 2.5 GB (1.6 GHz running OS 10.4.x). It appears that the FM client is running slower and I am interested if anyone has any data on whether the FM Server 10 produces any speed bump. I'll probably install it anyway but I would like to know if anyone has noticed faster or slower speeds.

I've just upgraded to FMP 10 and built my first set of runtime files. They're over 5 megabytes larger than the same application under 8.5. A quick check of the runtime directory revealed that the following subdirectories have been added: Microsoft.VC80.CRT Microsoft.VC80.MFC Microsoft.VC80.MCFLOC SASL2 XTPTrans Can someone tell me what these are for? ... IWP? ... SQL Access? I'd like to jetison them like I have the unnecessary dictionaries. But, of course, I don't want latent problems showing up. Thanks for any help.

Has anyone else noticed that under Vista the background color for tooltips has changed from yellow to a light blue gradient? And worse, that it renders as a banded effect, not a true gradient? Was this an advertised "improvement"? Is there a way to change it back? I've checked my desktop settings under Properties and they're the same as they've always been. FMP is somehow overriding them. For most folks, I suppose this isn't a problem (other than the banding effect). But I have some companion help panels that are color-coordinated to match the previous tooltip backgrounds. Any help will be appreciated.

Hello, does anyone know if it´s possible to run FM10 Clients with FMS 9 Server? We have no need for the FM 10 Server functions, but like to use FM 10 Clients because of the Skript Trigger functions. I think I recall that one could use a FM 8 Server along with FM9 Clients, but I might be wrong... -)

I took a look at the new FM Pro 10, and have to say that it looks pretty nifty. I like the looks of the new features and ever simplifying the interface, but I do have an issue.... I just purchased FM Pro 9 for my company as a means of keeping track of all our sales info. It was delivered Nov. 24th. FM refuses to let me upgrade to 10 without cost because I did not buy it after Dec. 6th. Anyone else think this is a crock? I saw no indications that a brand new version was about to be released, otherwise I could have waited the additional couple weeks. I have 2 separate databases that is hosted on FMServerAdv 9 and IWP is enabled on both the database. Prior to upgrading, my filtered portals are working fine. The field that I used to filter the portal is in db1 and the portal is linked to db2. But after upgrading to server advanced 10, the portals doesn't show anything, the fields are blank, but it only happens on IWP. If I use the client FMProA10 everything is ok. At first, I thought the new version does not open the DB2 automatically when you log in. But when I checked the server, the user is logged in to both db. Help?

I upgraded a person's machine from 8 to version 9 standard. Now when she prints just about any layout in that file it's cutoff. If she goes and changes the graphic scaling in the printer like we've done for many years, it really doesn't seem to matter what we set it to, it cuts off in the same place. (Shows in preview this way). I brought the file to my machine runnnig 9 Advanced and same issue. Doesn't matter if I change printers, Adobe, etc., same issue. Not sure where to start? Suggestions?

Hi, I just did one test but repeatedly a very complex export involving many nested unrelated fileds and relationship fileds towards a XML file. FMP 10 trial vs FMP 9 Advanced 269s vs 299 s = 238 records and 242s vs 270 s = 514 records (less complex because some empty) Test was done locally (no server involved) Filemaker Advance 9.03 vs FM Trial client 10. File in the exact same state (copied from a backup each time) so there's no caching difference Maybe client is faster than advanced but I don't think so. Hey all, I did some searching, but couldn't find a definitive answer. Can someone point me towards a compatibility guide for FM 10? Meaning, is Filemaker Pro 10 client able to connect to a Filemaker 9 server, can Filemaker Pro 9 clients connect to a Filemaker 10 server, etc. Obviously, a complete upgrade to 10 would be the best path, but with our remote users, a sweeping rollout is not an option. : does anyone have a list of known bugs in filemaker 9? I know there are some. (I'm sure filemaker is aware of most of them but, from experience they do not let the public know what they are until there is a fix. Good for sales, bad for everything else.) If there is a list, I'd love to see it. If there is not, I invite all to post any bugs they have found here. (I once spent three months tring to figure out what was wrong with my solution only to find out that Filemaker knew of an indexing issue and did not publish any info on it until there was a revision that fixed it. I for one would like to avoid anything like that in the future.)

Slow Screen Redraw Windows machines -Help! We have a database thats been used for almost 2 years. It's in Filemaker 9 and it had been working fine. It's running on Windows XP machines (the file server using filemaker server advanced). I connect remotely through VPN to make changes occassionally to layouts etc.. My home computer is a macbook pro. Have been running FMP 6 through all the permutations of OSX, and we continue to do so on all our Macs in the office. But I had occasion to turn my iMac off and when I turned it back on FMP 6 would not run. Everything else does. FMP 6's screen appears, then goes away, and in a moment or two the notice of a crash appears. Have trashed preferences, verified disk, and repaired permissions to no avail. It continues to work on our other machines. In fact we put mine on a flash drive, plugged it in to a macbook and another iMac and the program worked well. Apple says it's FMP. Hi: I'm running FileMaker 6.0 Unlimited. I have a pulldown menu when searching for user names in the database. When I search on the name "Noteboom S" it finds all the records for that user. When I search on "Noteboom N" it finds all the records for both "Noteboom S" and "Noteboom N". And now here's where it gets weird. I have two other users with the same last name ("Smith R" and "Smith T") and different first intitials, but their searchs work perfectly. And even weirder: If I change "Noteboom N" to "Noteboom L", it works. "Noteboom Na" works. . . just not "Noteboom N". Any suggestions? Thanks in advance. Tim

Hello, I apologize in advance if this has been posted, but the forum search function is currently down. I'm new to filemaker and we have recently converted our database from FM 5 to FM 9. The DB consists of 50 plus files and we are starting to discuss moving forward with an effort to combine all files into 4. Not sure where to post this, sorry if it’s in the wrong place. I’m trying to understand the difference between a VLA and an SLA. I’m looking for a 50 seat license. On the VLA a 50 seat license costs $241, while on an SLA a 50 seat license costs $159. Obviously there must be a major difference between the two to account for the price discrepancy.. what am I missing ?

Hi: I have FileMaker 6 Unlimited running with Outlook Express and serving Web pages using CDML. FileMaker runs a script that sends email. Recently, and now about every 2 days, I get a dialog box from FileMaker asking me if I want to compact Outlook Express to save space on the hard drive. This hangs up FileMaker and keeps my clients from accessing their data (unless I'm sitting there watching the server). Even if I say "Yes" to compacting or "Cancel" the box keeps popping up. Any solutions you could offer would really help as I have several hundred clients hitting this server during the day. Thanks, Tim

This is driving me nuts, DDR report (XML/HTML) crashes when scripts are included in the report. No problems running DDR on other files. Tried file recovery, optimize/compact/file, I even tried deleting all scripts in the file but whenever I run DDR with scripts selected on this particular file FM crashes. I tried it on a different machine and same thing. Are there any logs I can look into? Our main file has some 1500 scripts so migration to a fresh empty file is not an option. I tried running DDR on the same file with FM 8.5 Advanced and it worked fine. Running FM 9 Advanced 9.0v3 / WinXP Any ideas?

I'm migrating from an Excel-based list to a simple FM Pro (8.5) database. One of my fields is a set of radio buttons. What I need to do is take my list of 1,000+ entries in Excel, and set one of the radio buttons for each of those entries. The key field here is a unique registration number, which exists in both the FM Pro database and my Excel sheet. Let's say I have a field(Field 1) with a list of items: 1 2 3 4 Now let's say I have another field(Field 2) with values in it: 1 3 Now let's say I want to return all the values in Field 1 that don't appear in Field 2. Hello, I work in a studio and we have about 30 Macs (all OS X, vary between 10.4 and 10.5). All computers have the latest OS installed (of either 10.4 or 10.5) and all machines are running FileMaker Pro 8.5 (latest update/version). The FileMaker Server is running FileMaker Server 8 (latest updates). We haven't changed anything in quite some time and everything is running as it should for the most part. Hello, i have an interesting issue here that would like to share with you guys and hopefully solve it since its very important for a process which i am working in my company. The process is based on a scan of products in a global fields formatted as text. The scan may contain numbers from 2 digits until 6 for example: 12 123 1234 12345 123456 After the scan is done i do a process which looks for the related parts in our inventory which thats already working good, after that it goes to the first part and checks on the global scanned how many times that part has been scanned, this is where the problem comes. I've very new to filemaker so sorry for the basic question here. I am using filemaker pro 9, as a simple one PC database. I often export columns from the database for use in excel. I have a column where the majority of data is numerical, but some data isn't - for example, some entries are S24, instead of just 24. When I export this column, and open the text file in excel, it removes the letter. What can I do to fix this?

I'm brand new to Filemaker & I've just installed the trial version of Filemaker 9. I setup a database using a sample template, but have a question on field entries. My field contains an alpha-numeric "ID" for each record. In this case - 1A1,1A2, 1A3,...1A9,1A0,2A1,2A2,2A3, etc. Is there a way to prevent someone from creating a new record with an already existing "ID"? Info in fields following the ID should be changable. I did search on the forum, but didn't really see what I was looking for. Thanks for any help.

I am using 10.5.3, Filemaker 9.0v3, on a MacBook Pro core duo. Has anyone else experienced Filemaker just freezing on you (forever spinning beach ball) and then Filemaker crashes with the typical mac message that Filemaker just crashed, no other program was effected? I am not experiencing the problem when my computer goes to sleep or waking up from sleep. The problem seems to happen randomly, and sometimes when I change from Layout mode to Browse mode. I never had these issues in 10.4. I may switch back to Tiger.

I am not clear about whether I am able to activate this on both my desktop and laptop machine (I want to be able to work on databases while commuting and also run those databases via web publishing on my home machine). Hi folks - I am in the process of switching from pc to mac And from Approach to FM I played with the trial of FM on my daughter's laptop, converted and set-up a good portion of my work, loved FM, bought it, and installed it on my desktop imac. My profile is incorrect because the options aren't there -- I'm using FMpro 3.0 clients on Win2k/XP machines, hosted by Filemaker Server 3.0 running on Windows NT Server 4.0! I need to upgrade to a new machine, but my installation CD is nowhere to be found! It should be in the box... I've got the manual and the box in mint condition, no CD!! I am trying to use an installation of Filemaker Pro 3.0v2 on my Windows XP box and am trying to update it to the highest version of FM3.0 available. I think the highest released version was 3.0v5. However, the update file is no where to be found. I contacted Claris and they said that they don't have it any longer and referred me to this forum. Hi there, I work at a company that has just rolled out version 9 across a few thousand workstations. I pressed for upgrade to 9.0v3 but have been told they're busy and it's scheduled for Oct/Nov. What is a good minimum speed requirement for the internet connection for the client side to have? I have been unable to find my FM Server 5 installer CD for Windows but I have the serial # for it. I tried calling FileMaker, but they told me that they don't have the media any more. Anyone out there have a Server 5 for Windows CD (really just the installer) that they could send me via email (or I could set up an ftp account). Thanks!

On one of our XP Pro installations of FM9 Pro, the program can take up to 40 minutes to open after a reboot. There are not any scripts running at startup, no db's are being opened at startup -- only FM9. After the program successfully loads it can be closed and restarted within an expected time span (< 5 sec.). The glacial opening only occurs after the system has been restarted. Task Manager reports @ 35 k (@ 50%) of the program loads within seconds then halts and the remainder loads 10-40 minutes later. I have tried uninstall-reinstall with no changes. I've set up an SQL request to import training-related data from an external (Oracle) database. The request works fine except that 5 records out of the 54 imported, display the wrong completion dates. In each case the month is correct, but the day and year are not. I've also tried returning the dates as text with the same result. The same query entered through SQL_Plus returns all 54 records correctly. Crazy.

Has anyone found a way to print text in black ink only when printing to a digital press? FM changes 100% Black to 74 Cyan, 71 Magenta, 64% Yellow, 87% Black. I'm guessing that FM is using a color profile to convert the values. Maybe someone had found a way to actually print black as black. Should not be a hard thing to do. I have removed all color profiles from the system. To the point where FM crashed when I go to edit a color. I had to replace at lease the generic CMYK for the sliders to work. I have been using FileMaker for a long time from version 3 up to my current version 9 advanced. As I've progressed, I've kept each version [version 5, 6, 8.5adv & 9.0adv] on my system. The reasoning is that several clients that use my solutions are still using one of the specific versions mentioned. I've recently begun to have 'sharing' problems with my latest versions. Hi, I need some help please... recently I bought Filemaker Pro 9. I started doing my database in Windows XP. The problem is that know I have to move to Mac and when I open the database in Mac, I don't know why, but I can't have access to the files I've put there! I'm only able to see the records...the files appears only the icon, but if you try to click on them or save it to the disk the option doesn't work..appears like if you can't perform that option.. I recently needed to update a FM3 database to FM9. In addition, the database was migrated from a PC to a Mac. While the conversion of the database went without issue, I was experiencing significant performance issues when using the database. Mainly, I would get the beach ball as I moved from record to record. With only 5800 records in the database, I knew something else was causing the problem. I loaded FM 9 adv on my Win Vista based HP laptop and the short cut keys ctl-alt-arrow for aligning objects stopped working. I have to use the menu to align objects. hi, Is it possible to merge two filemaker files into one, with all of the field definitions? I have moved from FM4.1 to FM9 advanced. In 4.1, relational tables were different files. FM9 can have multiple tables in a single file and it would be better to do it this way rather than maintaining several files. I can't see anything in the user's guide or help files. Exporting field definitions would also work but I can't see how to do this either. I'd be grateful for suggestions, many thanks, George

I have a related DB with 8 files. Works fine in versions 7 & in 8. But when I open the DB in V9, I get the message that one of the files is damaged & needs to be recovered. So I use the recover function, but when I open the file I have lost about 150 records. Done this a number of times with the same result. Never happens in versions 7 or 8, only in 9. Any ideas?

I've seen this a couple of times in different DB's where a record in a database display question marks (?) in all the fields. When I perform a file recovery, no errors are reported, but the record in question disappears. What is odd is the record can be found based on data that was on the record, say, by Student ID number. As far as I can tell the record is completely corrupted so I import a good copy of the record from a backup. Any ideas on why this is happening?

Argh, this is driving me nuts. I contracted a few people to put in data on to a spreadsheet in Excel, and now I'm trying to import this data in to the "LawCases" database, and for some reason, I'm able to import them fine straight from the excel file, but when I try to import them from another .fp7 file that I have imported the excel data in to (in order to mess around with the serial numbers easily), the damned thing keeps giving me this message! I installed FileMaker Pro on a client machine and was able to connect to the databases on the FileMaker server database host. Everything was golden. Then, the machine needed to be reloaded (and we completely blew away and reinstalled everything). After I reinstalled FileMaker Pro, I could no longer connect to and see the databases on the FileMaker Server.
