I have a solution that tracks client visits so there are multiple client records (the same client ID). In a report format I need to be able to list the clients only once, which I can do with a sub summary part, but I also need to be able to count the clients and only count like clients once. Example: I have 5 clients with ID 1234, 5 with ID 1111, 2 with 1212 and 1 with 4444. With them all listed in a report sub summary I only see them once, but the count and summary count all occurrences of all clients. Using a count and count summary field I get 13 and I want 4. Any ideas how to do that?

I'm building a little kiosk/runtime for providing feedback to an employee. I have hit a couple snags. Just to confirm: 1. When using a runtime or kiosk mode solution, the option to create a pdf is NON-functional (because of licensing, etc) 2. Question, is that the only way to email a form from within my solution?

Hi, I am using FMP 11 Advanced and my app works fine within Filemaker. I have created a Windows Runtime which also works fine. However, I have created a MAC OS Runtime (.APP)which seems to work fine until I try to quit the application (either through the menu or through a button which executes the Exit application script command). The application window disappears but the application is still sitting on my luanch bar and can only be stopped using the Mac force quit dialogue. Any ideas anyone please ? Regards, Craig

Ive finally decided I have had enough of the crashes, the lag, the issues with my PC and am moving to a Mac. I know NOTHING about macs. Zippo Ziltch! With that said, I have to ask a very basic question... Will the fp7 files I created with FM for Win open and be able to be used on FM for MAC? Are they any issues or caveats? Any tips or advice to someone coming over from the darkside?

Ok, I've been racking my brain on this one and can't figure it out. I have a solution I built in Filemaker 11 Advanced, and built a runtime on my Windows XP system. I'm using the latest 11.0.2 FMA 11 for Windows. I have a client using 64 bit Windows 7. They have permissions to add records, change the password, etc., but when trying to simply CHANGE the password, they are getting a message saying: "This action con not be performed because the file is not modifiable." They can login and use the runtime solution, but changing the password caused this error message. I'm thinking it has to be a Windows permissions issue to I had them test the following, a…

I've used the developer tool in 8.5 to create a runtime file for both Windows and Macintosh. I have two questions 1. The initial runtime file size on Windows is 45M. The Macintosh initial runtime size is 185M. I don't understand the radical size differences. 2. I then 'zip' both files. The Windows zip size is 24M and the Macintosh zip size is 110M. When I unzip the Macintosh solution it will not run. Is there a special trick to compile a Macintosh solution?

Now I am getting a message when I try to launch the runtime app saying it failed because it could not locate xerces.dll, yet when I look at the runtime package that file is clearly there. I have tried rebinding the original solution and recreating the Inno script several times all with the same result. Any insights would be appreciated.

Is there a way to setup a FileMaker development environment so that instead of editing on a live application, you're editing a local application? I've been getting a little more serious about FM lately, so I want to avoid any potential "oops" moments as well as prevent users from seeing half-finished features. In the web application world, I've done this by building something locally and then rsync'ing it with the live server. A little legwork is sometimes required to move parts of the live database to the development environment (the full database is often prohibitively large), but I've found this process to be worth it overall. When editing FM applications, I feel …

Hi! Everyone this is my first post, and I hope is not the last I have a big problem, almost two weeks ago my company bought the last version of FileMaker Pro 11 Advanced via web, we were using the version 8.5 without problems, our clients are Spanish native speakers and sometime English speakers. When we see the new characteristics of FileMaker, specially the possibility to made charts, we do not think and buy the new upgrade. However, this version is not multi language, and in few weeks we need to present the last database for some clients in Spanish, we can use the version 8.5 but without charts. I remember that we have a similar problem 3 o 4 years ago, …

Hi all Been a while since I posted here, been quietly getting on with stuff. Anyway, one of things I have been getting on with is a pilot's logbook database, for pilots like myself. I'm oing to be distributing it as a runtime in FMP10, and I'm pretty happy with how it has turned out. However, there is a problem. One of my test subjects (running XP) has spent much time and input his entire logbook into a much earlier version, and I was out there tonight to upgrade him to the finished version, and that is where I ran into trouble, big time. Before running my setup program, we took his existing .USR file and moved it to another directory and renamed it .fp7 …

I'm just about to start creating a runtime solution using v11 (have just got the upgrade, although at present still using v9 and v10 for projects). Can v11 runtime solutions export/produce PDF files? If not (as per older runtimes), what are the best free PDF drivers runtime creators recommend to Windows users (CutePDF, PDFCreator etc), Mac users on the solution will be fine? Edited to add, if there aren't really essential features in v11, I may considering creating the runtime in v10, to ensure support for people running older versions of Mac OS X (another annoyance of v11, supports Windows XP, but not OS X Tiger...) Thanks!

OS: Mac OS X.6 FMPA 11 When I try to make a runtime I get an error that the "info.plist" file is locked. This stops the creation till I click ok and it finishes the creation of the project. The runtime will not work. If I take the same original file and try making a runtime in FMPA 10 it works without any problems. There is nothing special about the original file, it is just a template from FMP that was created and a few test records were added. The FMPA 11 created runtime has no .plist file in it but the FMPA 10 does. If I copy that file over to the FMPA11 runtime it will then work. I have changed owners, groups and permissions to all files and …

I'm trying create my first runtime solution from Filemaker Pro 10 Advanced (Mac OS X). The database from which I'm creating it is small (for now), about 900 kb, and utilizes only two layouts and a handful of relationships. I thought I'd start simple. It may be just my ignorance, but Filemaker's documentation on runtime solutions is terrible and inadequate, at least for me. I'd prefer to create a solution that is cross-platform, but for now I'd just be happy with one solution I could install and run on Windows, and one I could use on Mac OS. I've used the Developer Utilities feature to bind the files, and have used what (I think) is a unique 3 letter extension…

Hello Forums. I have a general design question. Im creating an ordering system where on one order a client can have many work-experiments (simple portal). Now. In this particular case, an order will have VERY MANY work-experiments in it, in this case the maximum number of work-experiments in one Order will be 3000. (Yes, !!) My solution has a routine, which will create such a "large order" automatically. It uses various tables for basic info to create an order of this size for the client, prefilled with his 3000 work-experiments. This routine, goes to the table of work-experiments and creates a record, then duplicates it and modifies it slightly, …

I have been reading about FMTouch and would like a better understanding of how (or if) it will work with my runtime solution. In my Runtime solution, I would like to display a layout in table view and let the user have access to the Modify button so they can customize the fields that appear on a list. However the Modify Table View window allows one to add any field from any table in the database. This is a bit too much power and can confuse users. Is there any way that I can keep access to the Modify Table View but limit the fields that it can access?

Just wondering if Filemaker will be making the runtime port over to Iphone. They put bento on there but there has been no solution for developers to become part of the iphone race. It is like the App Director going to Flash. Most director projects became lost . I think the same will happen to Filemaker people . if they can't port their products to iphone without stepping backward. I would urge everyone interested in their filemaker future to speak up about making an iphone runtime. I know there are ways but it is like making the user buy a 100 dollar cable to run a program. Cmon. Lets have some hope. Speak up.

This question relates to the Mac. I'm trying to finish the user's guide for my runtime solution and I have an issue I can't find addressed anywhere. It concerns the playback of a sound recorded in a container field. I can't disable this feature. Even though I don't have it in any of my custom menus, one can still double-click on a container field and record something. That part works fine. It's the playback that's an issue. You can playback a recorded sound by double-clicking on the field, or clicking once and pressing the space bar. But once it starts playing, there is no way to stop or pause it. If, because the space bar will often toggle pause/pla…

A filemaker database, previously and happily made into a single runtime, is now under threat of running twice on the same computer using the developer utilities to create two different application names and two different database extensions for both versions (two runtimes, two versions of the master database each with a unique extension). Hi! If anyone is interested, I found solution to hide status bar and get rid of annoying user name dialog on windows platform when you first start runtime solution. First I have to give special thanks to Jordan Russell for creating great installer Inno Setup. Well here comes magick... Every time runtime starts I think it checks for some registry entries and if some of them are missing it replaces value, so status bar becomes visible. Hi all! To facilitate my own work and not having to go through the menu bar or the impossible-to-remember shortcuts, I would like to create a developer interface for my database system. It's pretty straightforward: from 1 single layout I would like to be able to go to a certain script, layout or whatever other developer tool through e.g. value lists of said scriptnames/layout names/... I cannot seem to find a way to list them. As FM is a database system program, I am assuming that there are "hidden" tables somewhere keeping track of all these. No idea how to access them, however. I have found the "design functions" in the calculation box, but those don…

I am running FM 10 developer on OSX. I would like to disable the Status Area. Yes, I have set Status Area to Hide but the problem with this is that it is still possible to click the button in the upper right corner to show everything. I have also compiled my application (FM 10 dev) as a KIOSK application but the standard menu and the Status Area continue to show? How do I lock the user out of being able to use the Status Area? Thanks

I have an 8.5 database that works as it should when executed in normal FM mode. I right click on the container field and insert a picture. It, as you would expect, allows me to browse to find the picture. When I create a kiosk version of the database I no longer can insert a picture. In fact, when I go to the field and right click [i must click at least twice], I get a 'Sound Record' dialogue box. Is there something special about insertions and kiosk mode?

Im in the process of start modifying this Product Catalog solution. My goal is to be able to see the thumbnail and check on a box of the thumbnails that i want to generate a report to save to a pdf. So from my understanding i need to figure out how to do 2 things. 1- i want to be able to see a list of my thumbnails and be able to click on the box. (this would signal that i want to be able to see it in a report) I want to do this because i can have 200 images in my initial report, but i want to narrow it down with a second report based on the ones that have the box clicked. 2-I have no idea how to start this script or report.. Any help or ideas wo…

I delivered phase 1 of my product to the client and they are entering data into the FM database. But I will have several code changes coming up that I need to apply to the existing version. This would include new layouts, script changes and new scripts, new script triggers, value lists, new TOs and tables. I know that FM has a DDR tool that can be used to export a snapshot of the system. But are there any tools that can compare (diff) 2 DDRs and point out the differences? And better yet to be able to merge those differences. I know that one can import scripts and new databases, but the process all seem very manual. I come from the Java development world …

I created my runtime app. I have a script in the FM10 version that pulls data from an .xls file with about 20 different tabs categorized for each type of product that I use. Everything works great until I convert to a runtime App. Once in the run time the .xls cant be found and when I manually select it I have to do it for each tab inside it. How can I set this up so when I zip my run time and send to another user the inventory list will be in the right spot and they wont need to worry about finding it or setting it up. Any Suggestions?

Can anyone suggest some reading material or sample files showing how to properly set up a multi user system? I've tried setting a User Table in front of all other tables, but, it's not working the way I thought it would. My problem is I want to separate what the user sees so he/she isn't viewing someone else reports, activities, etc. Whenever I try to set up Accounts and Privileges it never works the way I thought it would so I really need some good examples and reading material so I can understand the whole concept. Any suggestions? TIA

Is there a plugin or something in Filemaker for a WYSIWYG? If you dont know what that is.. its a field this lets you type out formatted text, just just MS word. You can add color text, size, HTML links, images, etc. behind the scenes, is a combination of HTML code and the text you type. When you submit to the database, the HTML and content is stored. Sample: Hello [color:red]World! When you view the result on the web or in Filemaker, you see the formatted content. Just like in Yahoo mail or Gmail. Thank you!

Good day everyone, I've got a little problem regarding the above mentioned function. I need to know how it works. My FMP DEV is telling me that this function is called from within the FMP 9 engine every time you open up a file. Is that true? I just thought that this function is something I would use in a script or calculation field to get the path location of that temporary folder. But never would I think that this is activated every time you open a database file. Can anyone confirm how this function works, also if it is true that it’s called upon every time a DB is opened, can it be disabled? I work in a corporative environment and all the use…

That is all that is in the custom menus and it works great when opened with FMP 10 advance. However when i build the runtime solution it displays the title bar with the custom menu headers at the top but the menu does not appear (drop down) when the header is clicked or hovered over clicked. I am confused by what I'm seeing on different PCs for exactly the same character codes. The attached PNG file shows a composite of screen captures from three different PCs running the same application. The character block was created by typing in "abc" followed by Alt+0001, Alt+0149 and Alt+0001 The second line is the dot cut and pasted in ... followed by cutting/pasting the "abc". The third line is the dot pasted in, followed by typing "abc". Here's what I've confirmed so far: > The display field is defined as simple Text, with no extra processing > Exactly the same runtime build is installed on all three PCs > Each PC is running XP Service …

I notice that in FM9, 3 new folders appear when I create a runtime for my solution that weren't in the runtime for FM7 (at least not as unique folders) Microsoft.VC80.CRT Microsoft.VC80.MFC and Microsoft.VC80.MFCLOC What do these do? Are they necessary to port with the runtime when deploying the solution to other users?

I've got a FM runtime solution that I distribute and the first step after you load it the first time is to change your password. A new customer (hopefully) of mine is getting a message that the file is not modifiable when they try and change their password. It's the first time I've heard of this problem and I can't reproduce it on my own Macbook. The runtime solution is wrapped up into a Mac Installer Package which is then zipped and placed on the server. You simply download the zip and extract, then run the installer and load the software. I've never had a problem with this until this guy. I did a screen share with him and went through the whole thing …

I am using FM Advanced 10 using Windows Vista and have a problem with a script designed to export records from several tables to a file folder. The export script does not work properly in the runtime version. I get the following error; File; "ExampleReport" could not be created on this disk. Use a different name, or make more room on the disk, unlock it or use a different disk. The export script works fine, but when I bind the program up as a runtime file I get this error message. Example code; Send Event["aevt","odoc";"cmd /c md c:ExampleReport"] Export Records[No Dialog; "ExampleReport.fp7"; Unicode (UTF-16)] Any help would be much appreciated.

Does anyone have any experience of upgrading runtime version by first exporting the data (previous version) to XML and then importing the xml files into the newer version? Granted this does not work for container fields, but it seems that it might be a somewhat cleaner method than trying to use filemaker's import script step..

Very weird problem here, no doubt self-inflicted. I have a database built with FM7 developer. Over the years I have had system crashes and the computer re-booted without Filemaker having had a chance to close properly. Filemaker would always scan for unused blocks and the file would run fine. Periodically, I would run the file maintenance utilities to compact and optimize the database. Recently, I tried to open the database in FM8 it says the file is damaged and will not open. It then says to use Recover. When I use Recover it gets to step 2, "Rebuilding Data Pages" and the FM program terminates. I tried this with someone who has FM9 and the same thing happens. As I sa…

If I have a database and make it into a standalone runtime package, does it gain speed, memory usage or some other aspect than running the same database on FMP? I'm coming to an end of trial license and I am debating whether I need Advanced version, but I can't really judge these things since there is no trial for Advanced. Filemaker's website doesn't really spend many words on this, and threads on this board are also specific to their problems and I don't really get much out of them. I'm mainly using my database by myself and on a few computers, but if standalone runtime works well, I may let some collaborators use it as well. Not a very high priority matter bu…

Hi, With an installation file I can write registry keys during installation. So I can able to prevent user name dialog box which appears at the first time run-time executed. Now I want to increase file cache from its default value (8) to 128. But I can not find related registry key to change cache size. How could I find that registry key. Or is there any way to change cache size automatically within FileMaker or Installation file. Thanks F. Osman Cabi

I'm working with a set of FileMaker files that has had the filename extension changed to work with a runtime copy of FileMaker. The extension now in use is "723", and I'd like to revert to the standard "fp7" filename extension. I initially EXPECTED that I could EASILY change back to ".fp7" using the FileMaker Advanced developer utility for renaming files. But it seems that I can't add a file to the list of solution files the utility works with unless they have an "fp7" extension already... I was really hoping to avoid manually searching/changing all uses of filenames with the non-standard extension. This would mean looking through a LOT of scripts to search …
