We have several relational databases hosted on an OS 9.1 machine using FM Pro5. These databases are accessed over a network by five macs. The whole system worked great for about a month, then we started to experience frequent type1 and type2 crashes on the host machine. The crashes seem to occur most frequently, but not exclusively, when focussing a hidden related database as a new primary (interface). Fonts are a likely culprit, but the host machine has only OS fonts installed, and ATM found that two of these were damaged. After removing them, the crash problem persists. We have reinstalled the OS, and Filemaker. No help. The database files seem …

Brand new to Macs - I miss very basic knowledge. If I create a media field, then right-click (pardon, control-click) on that field, I can insert a sound. If I click that, a program opens. What program is that? Can I find it in the Applications somewhere? (This is Panther, by the way). Thanks

Does anyone know of a method (AppleScript, standalone app, or otherwise) for taking raw "forms" data which has been received via email (using OSX's Mail.app) from a web site (e.g., name and address data), and converting it to tab-delimited text -- so that it can be imported into a FileMaker database?

Hi We are rolling out Citrix to users who currently have multi user databases stored on Novell servers and accessed via FileMaker Pro 5/6 installed on their PC or Mac workstations. Because the databases are multi user we have to move to FileMaker Server, but want to continue to store the databases themselves on Novell servers. Can anybody advise how we can do this? Many thanks Jenny

I have been hosting our FM solution on a iMac 700mhz G3 for about a year. This machine is dedicated to this sole purchase. It is running OSX 10.2.8. Originally it was running Unlimited with about 12 relational files. Served up to about 5 local users on our office network as well as serving pages via web companion to the internet. I had the occasional crash. Usually it would be Filemaker that would quit. I would just have to relaunch it. Over the past 2 months I added 5 new relational files to expand on the web files being served up. All of a sudden the computer is crashing almost daily. Not just Filemaker crashing, but the whole computer is locking up. It does not s…

We have a small network with filemaker in our office. Many times the computer is left on a record that needs to be used by others. So their computer will say the record can not be modified because the same record is open on another computer. Can this safety feature be turned off or gotten around in some way?

Folks I was working on a late model G4 server last night. It was in a server room connected to one of those monitor/keyboard switch boxes, with a PC keyboard connected to it. The G4 has no CD tray open button, there is a eject disk key on the keyboard. But it was a PC keyboard plugged in... Does anybody know if there is a keyboard shortcut (or something) to open the drive tray? We ended up having to shut the server down and temporarily pluging in a mac keyboard. But there's gotta be a bterre way.

I have 2 G4s with OS9.2.2 running FM6.0v4. One operates normally. The other runs FM with 40mb RAM instead of about 12Mb. Mouse scrolling and keyboard typing is painfully slow in FM but not in other applications. This happens even when I open just one of the small sample databases provided with FM. Closing FM takes an age. I have tried switching everything else off including networking but with no effect. Any suggestions anyone ?

I have a whole set of FMP files that I manage on a G4. From time to time I copy all these files onto my Powerbook in order to access them on the road. I can't figure out why but on the Powerbook FMP takes an inordinate amount of time to find the related files even though they are all classified in the same folder with the same name as on the G4. I get the impression that FMP looks everywhere else instead of in the folder to find the right file. Does anyone have any idea why there is this delay so I can work a way around it?

Here is the scenario. I have a Windows 2000 Server with an active directory domain. I have the FMP databases on a shared folder. I have a script mapping the workstations (all XP Professional) to the shared drive. I can open the databases on the server and it says that it's opening the files for network sharing. However, none of my users can open them. They will get the "file is currently in use and cannot be opened". If I move those databases to another workstation, they can be opened just fine. I have removed the shared name from the folder, and moved the databases around the server, but I still get the same error. Can someone help please?

Hi we are running FM Server 5.5 and FM 6 accross a few networked win2000 PC's The problem i have is this, whenever i open files from the server i get a 10-20 second delay halfway though loading the file ie half the interface will load then it will hang then about 20 seconds later the rest of its there and working fine. Its just when im changing between files i get this hang and its really annoying! It only does it on 2 PC's out of about 15.... I dont know if its worth noting but if i open up FM6 on the server it does it there as well so it may not be a network problem? any ideas???

I developed a db for a cliet that was using MS Works. They wanted a Filemaker or Access database because they needed it to be multi user, and Works can not be used on a network with more than one person at a time. With Works the database fields can be easily inserted right inside the Works wordprocessor, and they would type numerous letters and do mail merges, and put fields into the text. The word processor had word wrap and was a decent word processor (much better than the Filemaker word processing within the layouts). I put together a database that is far superior as far as database capabilities, but does not make it as easy to do word processing and insert field. Th…

I posted this in "Plug-ins" yesterday, but realized this may be a Windows issue: Okay, so the clent ended up opting for ProPrint from Afeina as a way to switch between printers on one Win98 box (FM 5.5, running off FMServer) and now one printer almost always throws this strange "cyclical redundancy error" from the print folder. I'm a Mac guy, not a Windows guy, so I may be missing something obvious, but it seems that the error is in ProPrint and/or FileMaker, as the printer works fine in any other setting, and printing from the File menu works, too. Any suggestions? -Stanley

I've got a network between 2 pc's, 1 color laser printer and 1 laser printer. The computers are both printer client and server (1 printer is linked in local to both). The program used is filemaker pro 4.0, but I don't think that is the problem, 'cause the trial of filemaker pro 6.0 doesn't make any difference. The problems started when I upgraded the 2 machines with windows 2000 (from win98SE), we use postscript printers drivers, and there are many differente settings to print properly. These settings need to be saved on the file to record a script (the same as macros more or less), and it always worked fine with win98se. But now changing (or sometimes even usin…

I surmise that FM networking is failing to broadcast…

5D Services, makers of the ihook IT Management solution announce the immediate release of FM.NET. ihook's FileMaker ADO.NET Connector is a data provider for .NET connecting to FileMaker. It allows applications to connect to a FileMaker database in a standard way, in a similar way as connecting to MySQL or an SQL Server. The driver implements all required and optional DataBase interfaces in System.Data and is provided as a set of DLLs to include in your project. Documentation is also provided. The driver connects to the FileMaker database via FileMaker's Web Companion. In the current version the product doesn’t write to Repeating Fields or Container Field…

Hello We've just had a pentium III windows NT4 computer donated to our small charity. We run FMP5.5 on a network using FMP server. I installed FMP on the new workstation and tried to open a file through the host. I got the access violation 0xc0000005 message. Any ideas what that could be? A web search only threw up the suggestion of a conflict between the service pack and FMP. I don't really know what that means! Although I manage the IT here, I'm very self taught and don't necessarily understand all the technical terms. But if anyone has any ideas, that would be great. thanks nicole

Hello all, I've developed a good solution to be used in stand-alone settings. Now I need to make it multi-user-friendly.... I've done the obvious things like setting the files as multi-user. But what do I need to do to make it really multi-user friendly? When writing flat-file db's in Perl, I've gone to great lengths to make sure that one user wasn't using a file while another wanted access to it. What do I need to be aware of in File Maker? How do I deal with 2 users wanting to access a file at the same time? What happens when scriprs collide? Where should I go? Thanks for any insight. Dan

Hi All, Okay, I have seen similiar gripes about this, but no definitive solutions yet. setup- FMPro5.0 Windows2000pro Ethernet I have a 22 file database on computer A (NOT in a shared folder). I open files on computer A (through target file that scripts open the other 21), all are multi user. I try and open on computer B through Open-Hosts, but I do not always get the files showing up in the Hosts box. If I try again, it sometimes works. Then when I click on the target files, it starts to open, but inevitably says it cannot find a file (different one each time...), which I have to select manually from the host box after a few tries, and proceed. …

Using FM 5.5v2 client on small network. One database setup as multi-user TCP/IP hosted on one Mac running OS 10.2.6. IP address set to a valid manual address. None of the other computers (PC's & Macs), all with FM 5.5v2, on the network can't see it being hosted. Acting like port 5003 is blocked, but this is internal to the network. Not able to find the router in the time that I had there. Not accessible via web interface. Was told the router is 5-10 years old, but no one knows how to configure it, the password, or even where it's located physically. But that may not be where the problem lies, so I don't know if I should even bark up that tree. As a qui…

I have a FM Server on a 1meg SDSL LAN to which remote users on standard DSL connections happily use. One of my remote users recently moved to North Wales where standard DSL is not accessible so I set up a satellite DSL service believing that this would be the solution for him to connect to the server via IP. I did this as I knew nothing about latency issues which now prove to be a major problem as the database takes 10 times longer to open than it did over ISDN. Does anybody know of an affordable solution to this? I have spoken to a couple of companies who are developing software which improves the latency issues on a Mac by reducing the TCP/IP header compress…

I have an FM6 solution running on a Win2000 PC with a static IP address. I have a remote user running FMP6 also. Can the remote user access the FM6 solution by entering the static IP adress in their "host" dialogue, or is this an oversimplification of what's needed? Thanks.

All, I've posted this query here as I think it has more to do with my internet configuration rather than serving fm. Anyway here goes... I've recently 'invested' in an ADSL connection. The new modem [speedTouch 350] works perfectly for browsing/email and is assigned a dynamic IP by my ISP. The modem serves an ethernet network. I'm running OSX. Now I need to serve my FM dbs to the web. I know the dynamic ip will mean that I don't have a static site, but I can get around this by using the re-direction technique provided by no-ip.com as suggested in a previous post. The problem seems to be in directing incoming web connections to the web server rather tha…

I have a client who has about 14 elderly Macs networked together using a 24 port hub. Recently one of their colleagues changed over to a new IBM PC, with Windows XP Professional installed. She has a static IP address assigned by the DSL provider, and DSL is uplinked through the hub and works fine at her computer. Everyone else gets their IP address through DHCP and has no problems. The company is using a Blue & White G3 running Filemaker Server. Our problem is that after loading the Windows FM Pro on her PC we cannot get it to "see" the FM Pro Server files or the network printers. All of the Macs are set up running TCP/IP for Filemaker Pro. I have talked to IBM, to Fi…

I have a PowerBook G4 with OS X.2.6. I have FM5, and I'm sitting here with an FMPro6 Upgrade still in shrinkwrap, because I wanted to check out some things first. - The box says 10.1 is required in OS X. Does FM run in Classic mode, or is it for-real OS X? I figured they'd spell it out, but I find it safer to check first. - I am not thrilled about having to install FM5 just so FM6 can find the files it needs to verify the upgrade. Is there a way around that? For instance, does anyone know if the process might let me slip in my FM5 CD? Maybe just drag-copy something from FM5 CD? Thanks.

Does anybody have experience accessing files via VPN in 10.2.3? The files are served on a G4 running OS9.2 which is part of a network of computers connecting to the Internet via a router and ADSL, we have no problems getting to the files from a PC using ADSL and VPN. However, we are now adding G4s running 10.2.3 and while I can establish a connection via VPN, the files do not show up in the Host list of Filemaker. Any suggestions very much appreciated. Gabriela

We have been having numerous problems for well over a month now. We are still using Filemaker 4.1 and are storing the files on Novell Netware 5.0. Just today, two were brought to my attention. First, the program would not start on one PC for whatever reason. I deleted the font files, and then the program opened fine. This has occurred several times. We are also having problems with one particular file. I have told the user to try re-creating the file and then importing all the information. She has had to do recovers several times and has apparently lost some information. I removed the programs several weeks ago and then re-installed them on the four users' mach…

It's just a minor nuisance. But about once a month or so, the Filemaker program just won't start. I fix it by deleting the fmf file, and then the program re-creates the font file and opens up fine again. It only takes a couple minutes. Is there a permanent solution to this problem? We have Filemaker Pro 4 running on Windows 2000 machines. Maybe I need to add some more font files to the machine? Chris

I love rumors as much as the next guy, but this one hits kinda close to home. Ran accross this tidbit this morning that FileMaker was being moved back in-house at Apple. http://www.appleinsider.com/article.php?id=115 Seems kind of far-fetched, but with all the buzz about changes @ Apple and what the WWDC will bring @ the end of this month I wondered if anyone else has heard anything recently about this? Seems to me there was a "Microsoft is buying FileMaker!" scare not so long ago. Not that this would be a bad thing, and I definately don't want to fan any fires, just thought it would make for interesting DevCon conversation this year at Pheonix. thanks

Hi, I've been using FM on Macs for years and found it so trouble-free that I never made my way to this great site! Now I've had to load one of our copies of FM 4 onto a new COMPAQ N1000/Win 2k laptop and run into an odd problem. When I'm entering text into a text field and hit the 'return/enter' key (i.e. the ordinary CR key) to generate a new paragraph, FM jumps out of the text field, as though I'd hit the 'enter' key on a numerical key pad. When I attach an external keyboard, FM performs just as it should. As a work around I'm now using the on-screen keyboard, which behaves 'properly' to enter CRs. But there must be a better way! I called COMPAQ…

I work for a small nonprofit. We run a database with 7 files, and up to three of us in theory would be on a time. In the future, I may add a few files and one or two people (if we're lucky). I am running into numerous hosting/network problems. We purchased three individual copies of FMP from a discounted-for-nonprofits source. When I put the databsed on the server but hosted it from my machine, I would sporadically get an error message that it could not open (or find) certain files, which were in fact already open. When I moved the files to my own hard drive, these problems disappeared for me. But now other users get the same error messages if they becoem g…

I'm running FMP Server 5 on a Win2K server. Client is FMP 5.5 on Win2K professional machine. The following error occurs for my machine on the network only. Everyone else can open and use the database and related databases just fine "Sorry, FileMaker is unable to read the disk the file is on. Click continue to try again or click exit and copy this file to another disk." It appears it is the related file and a specific layout that I'm having issues with...again on my machine only. I can open the file, however when I switch to a layout that calls the other two related files, I get the error message. If the files are corrupt, why doesn't everyone g…

Greetings, We have a Win2K server box (our main domain controller) running terminal service. Users from remote offices use FMP 5.0v3 in terminal service to connect to our databases. This setup is faster than directly connecting to our FMP server and it's been working perfectly for almost a year now. A little while ago we started getting the following message : "The instruction at "0x77805ce7" referenced memory at "0x00213000". The memory could not be "read". Click on OK to terminate" The error message sometimes pops up when opening the first database, sometimes when trying to create a new record after all the databases are open and sometimes …

A client has 4 computers on a TCP/IP network, each with FMP. They scan pix from one of the "guest" computers, but save them to a folder on the "host" computer. Then the links to the pix are created in a container field. The problem is that the pix take forever to load -- even on the "host" computer. The only computer on which they don't take forever is the one on which the work is done (i.e. the links are created). :??

I am wondering if anyone has experienced problems having a Windows based machine, or a Mac with OS 9 host a file, and then try to open that hosted file as a guest in an OS X environment. I am getting multi-user issue, stating that the file is a single user. I have rechecked, the multiuser connections, the TCP/IP, and everything is correct. So why can't the OS X get into the file as a guest? thanks for any help, paul

I am trying to get Excel to access data in an FM database via ODBC. Both the applications are on the same machine, no network, no server. In OS9 this was possible & easy using Intersolve ODBC drivers supplied by FM. In OSX it seems less straightforward. The DataDirect text driver supplied in the FM6 installation has no info as to how it should be configured, and using this alone (with its corresponding configuration app) Excel does not recognise that ODBC is even installed..... Howerer, using Openlink's dirvers (and configuration app) I can get Excel to recognise ODBC, open Query and request a DSN. Problem is how to configure the driver, be it either a generic on…

I have a set of databases I designed on a Mac, but is now running on a windows LAN. It runs fine on a single computer, but gives slow performance for network guests. (There are 3 network clients). The way I have it built, one opens on the serving machine, a master "Contacts" database, which has been scripted to open all of the other 14 inventory, invoicing ordering and related line items databases at startup as multi-user. For the client machines, I just have a "shortcut" to the remote and running Contacts database. The shortcut automatically opens Filemaker and connects the client machine as a guest of the serving machine. My question is: Is that method …

I use filemaker pro server 5 and filemaker pro 5. I have a wired and wireless network using Microsoft wireless equipment. This all works fine on my XP and 2000 machines, but when I use it on a Win 98 2nd machine, it keep's loosing its connection to the file. I guess there is some sort of momentary loss to the connection and filemaker won't let it reconnect without closing out of filemaker and restarting it. None of the other programs I run off the server has this problem. Has anyone else have this problem? Do you know of a fix [email protected]

Hi guys, Firstly, I must thank you all for your tremendous help and source of wisdom to a newbie such as myself. I am quite in awe of some of the posts that go up in here. Now the reason for this post... Whilst I am a newbie to the world of Filemaker, I have been developing Word for some time. I would love to find a forum such as this one which discusses developer issues. Every forum I've found so far is very ... well, lets just I'm looking for something meatier than how to "turn on bold" So any links to super user/developer word forums would be greatly appreciated. Cheers Jan
