Hi Everyone - one more question before I slip into a coma... We have 2 servers (both intranet connected via additional LAN cards) - one that our outside (cloud) clients FTP into and load photos onto (10.0.0.1), and a separate server that runs FMS11 as a database host to those customers (10.0.0.2). FYI: They are both internet accessible via IP. We are trying to get the photos they upload to 10.0.0.1 (ftp server) to show up in the databases which are on 10.0.0.2. We're currently trying to use a calculation that returns a container object, but FMP always processes it as a local path, which of course, doesn't work. I'm assuming we're pathing it wrong in t…

Hi everyone. Wanted to know if anyone has ever created a script that can open a remote database and (assuming that user has the privileges) either change or run a script that can change the IP address or hostname of an existing favorite host? Any help would be appreciated! I have many users who can barely drive :

Hi All, I've got a Xserve running OSX Server 10.5.8 and FMSA 9. When I uninstall FMSA 9 and install either FMSA 10 or 11, external authentication breaks. All the external users and groups are set up in the local OS. Some things we've tried: -confirmed that FM and External authentication are enabled in the admin -double checked the spelling of group names in the OS and FM files -re-uploaded the data files through the admin -deleted and re-created some users and groups in the OS -deleted and re-created some external-auth accounts in a database -burned sage in the server closet No matter what we do, we end up with error number 661 logged whe…

I have seen several posts within this forum that seem to be similar to my issue, what makes matters worse, this subject matter is not my domain of expertise. I am merely posting here to see if I can get a simple answer to help me help my IT support. A client of ours recieves messages with too great a frequency that 'Filemaker has lost communication with host. All affected windows will be closed.' They are running Filemaker Server and all clients are on a hardwired LAN. We, somewhat stubbornly, believe that the issue has to do with some setting on the client computers or more likely some issue with their LAN. They belive that the issue is Filemaker based. I'd be interested to hear if anyone has any ideas about this problem. All machines are MAC and they are running Filemaker 10 and Server 10. The server is configured to NOT disconnect idle clients. Looking forward to any suggestions anyone …

I'm trying to get FMServer 11 to execute SYSTEM SCRIPTS on Mac OS X 10.6.3. In the first instance I can get simple commands to execute, such as 'ls' without problem, but what I really want to do is fire up a separate database and use an installed FileMaker Pro 11 to "save records as PDF" - this is an option not available within FMServer. My simple scripts is: #!/bin/bash open '/users/stagebase/documents/file.fp7' which execute correctly when initiated from a terminal session started from the Finder. I have applied the changes to the /etc/sudoers file as recommended by the FMS Admin Console help, so that the script can execute under a local syste…

We are currently running FMServer 9 on an old G5/OS X 10.4 server. It hosts student records for various projects, has a maximum of 2 users and it's been fine. But I need to update. Would FMSA11 run on a lightly used xServer? The server in question only runs a few web sites; some Joomla and Moodle. I know that best practice is for a dedicated server but I am running out of options here. Is anyone else in this position and has found sharing a server acceptable? Thanks for you time - much appreciated.

Hi there, I am having an issue adding/connecting to my database using the PHP Assistant. I have tried to point the PHP Assistant to the database but I keep getting the same error: Connection failed. Please check the server address. I ran the test page and it connected to the sample database without any problems. I have tried multiple file paths to the database and still get the same error. I had done this once in the past. The help file wasn't much help. I did make sure my database has all the right access privileges. My Database is on an Apple X-Server. IP address is 192.168.1.107 If you can help me or point me in the right direction that would b…

Hi, I need to access a FM server using ODBC. I installed DataDirect SequeLink 5.4 and I can successfully connect to FM from various ODBC clients. The problem arises when I try querying the data: I get errors such as "[DataDirect][ODBC SequeLink driver][ODBC Socket][DataDirect][ODBC FileMaker driver]Invalid character value. Error in column 40.". If I remove column 40, I then get similar errors on other columns or things like "Requested conversion is not supported." I am not sure what to do now. The ODBC driver that comes with version 11 doesn't seem to be able to connect to 9. Can anybody help me? Best regards, Alessandro Federici

We have a new FMPRO SERV ADV 11 license that installed and deployed great, we have been using the server to host fmpro7 databases with IWP successfully. The only thing that is a concern is that the the FileMaker Server Admin Console - > Overview there is a message in a RED rectangle that says "SERVER STATUS INFORMATION - [current date/time] An Error was encountered communicating with the server." I'm happy that everything works, IWP is a great short term solution where I work but it doesn't sit well to read that message. Currently we have a "self-cert" SSL certificate configured with the Apache. If I restart the Apache and SSL and restart the FileMaker Server …

Im thinking of using Filemaker Server under Windows 2008 Server 64 bit version. 1. Will that work? Does FMS run in 64 bit? 2. Am I then married to the IIS Server or can I use Apache? 3. What virusscanner would be good so it doesnt completely shred the databases and 4. How could I encrypt the Databases on the disk so they dont fall into the wrong hands when the disk ist stolen? (Something like Filevault on OSX?) Thanks, Spongebob as you can tell from the questions, I prefer Macs. :

Hi, Although I have search in FMForums I have not found the solution to a lost password issue in FMServer 9. Client has lost the password and also has done some sort of "manual based correction attempts". The result is an "Unable to launch the application" dialog box when I tried to open the Console. Two issues worry me: - Although the files are served an apparently work well, is there any real and inmediate risks in such a configuration for the data? -How to access to the heart of FMServer in order to set new user/password to the FMServer Console. Server is Xserve with 10.6-server and other services inside running. Any documented issues a…

I have a client with FM Server on a Windows machine - I don't know the operating system. They are able to access the Admin Console while within the network but I am unable to access it from outside of the network (I'm working remotely). Client has my IP address to allow me to get through the firewall. 4. I am able access the db file remotely. 5. I am able to access the db file via IWP. 6. Hi all, I found confirmation in this forum that installing on win 2008 R2 is trouble-borne for some of us. I think I have a new issue to report: 2 machines with same server OS. All FMSA runs fine if deployed under either environment. Making one the worker (with ports & versions checked & confirmed), the other one the master, works somehow as expected. Exception: have to enter the worker's ip address since it is located in DMZ. Deployment then works fine. Services on worker get started as expected. BUT connecting to e.g. FMServer_Sample via IWP fails in a special way: it returns a blank page. That is, no error, but a blank page with HTML header i…

Hi everybody, Before buying a copy of FileMaker Server 11 Advanced, I'd like to have some information regarding web deployment! Currently, our Mac Mini (the latest one with OS X Server v10.6) is serving web, file sharing, printers, calendars, address book, dns and vpn services to the company's employees. I'm aware that FileMaker advices not to install FMSA if there's any web/file/printer sharing service, but the other server we've got is PPC so we can't run FMSA on that one. And, anyway, FMSA will be serving a very little amount of data, so performance is not going to be a problem! The point is... That machine is currently serving 2 websites with Apache…

I know this topic has probably been talked about already, but is Filemaker Server 8 compatible with Leopard? I just got a MacMini and plan on using that as a Filemaker Server. I installed FMS 8 and get an error that I cannot connect to the server. If FMS 8 is not compatible with 8 and I can't install Tiger on this new MacMini, what are my options? Do I have to buy Server 9 and does anyone know if that is compatible with Leopard yet? Thanks!

Hey Guys (and Gals), I just installed FM Server 11 advanced trial on Windows server 2003 R2, and everything went fine. FM server started up, and ran just fine. I restarted my windows server, and now FM server starts, but gives me the error message that the database engine hasn't started, and needs to be started by administrator. When I click on the start button, nothing happens, but a long wait, and then the start button becomes unavailable, but database engine still not working. Any suggestions or help in identifying the issue? PS...Yes, fmserver is started under my "Services" on Windows server. Thanks in advance. Really looking forward to owning this…

On all existing clients I have a fm9 opening file that has the script "open remotely" where the user selects the "Access" file on the server from the "remote pop up window", then when opening this "Access" file on the server, causes its log-in window to pop up, for the user to enter the user name and password, which when correct, then continues the script to open all the other files with the same user name and password passed on to these other files seamlessly. This works just file for all my clients except the new laptop just acquired. After rejoining TechNet today, I proceeded to download and install my complimentary FMSA 11 (11.0.1.99 label on disk image). I did so on my development machine, a MacBook Pro 15" Unibody Late 2008 running Snow Leopard 10.6.3. On Filemaker Server 11, is there a way I can start and stop the Database Server and Web Publishing Engine on a schedule? We are migrating from Version 5.5 (Server)/ 6 (Client) into Version 11. Working remarkably well so far. We even have Server 11 hosted on a Windows Virtual Machine. Not a problem so far. However, when I go to set up the Backup Processes, I have a problem. I specify "c:/FM Backup 1" as my folder. When Server does its backup process, it creates a time/date stamped folder under that. I can't find a way around it. ("Daily 1 AM_2010-04-19_0100" as an example.) We have Windows Batch Files that pick up the files & move them where we need them (for 5.5). If I can't specify the name of the exact folder, I can't pick up the files & work with them. …

Hi, I'm posting this hopefully easy one to start 2010. I have an image database running on Filemaker Server 10 on Snow Leopard, everything runs fine except I can't get the images to show up in IWP. I followed the instructions on the IWP guide and copied the image files to /Library/WebServer/Documents/, permissions are good (the same as the other files in WebServer/Documents) and the IWP works well, everything that is embedded shows up, but none of the referenced files. I even tried re-adding the image reference thru Filemaker Pro in the server, and still no luck. Could anyone point me in the right direction? Thank you! Jose.

I am thinking that I have to run through an export/import routine. but that just seems scary to me.

I set up a Windows batch file that simply opens a non-hosted FileMaker file. When the FM file is run, it performs some tasks, then exits. When I run the batch file as is, it works just fine. I setup a FMS schedule to run said batch file. I set it up to run under a Windows Admin account that I know is good (I manually ran the file using the same account). Each time the schedule fires, it aborts with a status of 'System script error'. Looking in the log viewer, I see an error of 692 - 'returned non-zero status -1" Now I can understand this being a problem if the schedule was run under the Local System user or other non-priv user. Hi, I represent a digital printing company and we are looking to use Web2Print technology on our website. we are avid filemaker users and we are in the means of creating with a programmer a project management database software. what we would like to create within this new program is some sort of form that our customers would fill in via a web browser on our website and the project submission would then be within our filemaker database automatically. so now we wouldn't have to type back in the form informations back in filemaker via an email that would be sent to the project managers once the customer fills up the project ticket. a job ticket would be created auto…

Last night, I experienced a problem where an hourly backup of Filemaker Databases on a Windows 2003 virtual server froze without any error messages. I was unable to stop the server either through the console or even through stopping the Filemaker Service directly (I have administrative rights to the machine.) And when I say I couldn't stop Filemaker Server, I mean the hosted databases remained open and I could move from record to record. Only a restart of the machine fixed the problem, and backups and operation appear to be running smoothly now. Has anyone else experienced a similar issue?

An open sales database running on an XServer got replaced or annihilated! Was 90Mb file with 8500 records, many layouts. Now it's 12K, zero records, 2 layouts named "Layout#1" and "Layout#2" and 3 fields. When I tried to open it later, it was damaged. So I tried to recover it, Filemaker errored "Sales.fp7 was not created by Filemaker or is severely damaged and cannot be opened." What happened? Any ideas?

Hello everyone, I'm trying to use the same database file copied to two separate folders and host them on the same server. Users are authenticated via external authentication. I want when user “A” types his password he gets the database in folder “A” and when user “B” types his password he gets the database in folder “B”. However when I try to upload the database into a separate folder I get an error telling me that the file already exist even though I was trying to add it into a different folder.

Hi, I set up a server (or am trying to) but when I opened the files on the server computer, I get the message "filemaker cannot share files because another user is already sharing files using filemaker Pro on this computer." When I do an open remote from a different computer, I can see the server and the IP address under local hosts, but nothing in the available files. If I type in one of the files after the slash I get the message ""file" could not be opened. Either the host is not available or the file is not available on that host" What am I doing wrong. The server is connected, the files all say normal. The privelege sets are set properly. EEEEK! Mike

I'm running Filemaker Server 10 on a Windows 2008 Server box. From the Filemaker Pro clients, if I choose File -> Open -> Remote - I can see the server - but the databases/files I am hosting do not appear. I'm not sure where to go from here: Details: For years, we ran Filemaker 9 Server on an SBS 2003 box. We had Filemaker Pro 9 on the desktops, and we had no problem using the Filemaker Pro client and going file -> open -> remote and clicking on the server name in the left hand pane and the files in the right hand pane. We only used it as a database server - not at all web publishing. We recently upgraded our server from SBS 2003 to SBS 2008 wh…

I'm working on a FMS9A -> FMS10A upgrade right now, and running into the same problem I've run into every time I've attempted such. What I do each time is uninstall FMS9A then install FMS10A. Every time I do this, when FMS10A gets all configured, it's web server connector is not working properly. Whenever a mod_jk path is requested, it doesn't properly map it. Eg, if I request http://www.servername.com/fmi/iwp/, Apache thinks it's a normal request and throws an error, instead of it being properly mapped by mod_jk to the WPE. I do know the WPE is running properly, as if I use a second web server to connect to the WPE on the upgraded box, it works fine - sin…

I was wanting to add a simple old .fp5 db to my server files. I opened the db with FMP9 to convert it to .fp7 format and then tried to use the "upload a database" function in Server. However the server fails to see the file. I can't find anything in any documentation about this. I thought the problem might be found with "sharing and permission" using get info, but I can't find anything wrong there. Any ideas anyone ?

Would anyone know if it's possible to run the FMSA9 Web Publishing Engine on a Snow Leopard Server? We have a two machine configuration, both OS X 10.5 Server, with FMSA9 on one and the WPE on the web server. I'd like to upgrade to 10.6 but without the time or expense of upgrading Filemaker Server. I'm aware that FMS9 itself will not run on 10.6 but I'm hoping that doesn't apply to the WPE

FM Server Adv 10 hosted on Mac Pro with OSX Server 10.5. IWP works if path is specified as machinename.local/fmi/iwp but fails if path is /fmi/iwp with 404 File not found. Problem resolved if turn off OSX web service on server, however I want to use the OSX web service in addition to IWP. Adding a redirect works for local subnet, but not on external subnet via VPN. VPN access works OK if OSX web service is off. It seems to be a name resolution problem - any suggestion for a fix/workaround? Ian B

Hello All- I have a client that is using FileMaker 9 Pro and FMS 9 hosting a total of 8 related files. FMS is on a Server 2003 machine and 10 clients are accessing it via XP machines. The problem is this, when launching the Main files that stores the Login script that subsequently opens up the 7 other related files, the login process takes about a minute and a half. Under NORMAL condition this takes about 10 secs. The difference in login times is making our clients a lil mad. Things that I have notice that is somewhat different from most server-client relationship are: 1. Client is on a different subnet that server 2. Client Profile is stored on a Ne…

In regard to virus scanning, our software doesn't scan files with a .fp7 format, but are the temp files a .fp7 format or does the virus scanning software need to be set up to not scan another file type? Thanks, John

I am still using FMP 6 and Server 5.5 I have 800 people divided into 3 groups. Each group is has a number designated to their group in a field called “reged” Group one’s number is 55, group two’s number is “99” and Group three’s number is “4”. I have 2 layouts in the database. I want group 1 (the #55s) to got to layout 1 and group 2 (the 99s) and 3 (the 4s) to go to layout 2 when they login. I also want to find and show only the people in their group when they go to the layout. Basically if someone from group one logs in with their password “reg191” which allows them only to see the people with the “55” in field “reged”, I want the to go to layout 1. And if on…

Just when I thought my project was over its just beginning again. I wasnt sure where to post this but felt its more advanced than basic so its here. Right now I have a full reporting Run Time App in FM10. I would like to be able to have a reporting Dashboard where I can edit the data to be included in graphs and reports but want these real time via a computer anywhere off my network. Has anyone done this, doing it or ever looked into doing something like this? I assume I would need FM Server to be able to report to any pc on network as right now I use a runtime on a shared folder that can be open by one person. Any suggestions on how to achieve this…

I've got a twist on a problem I've seen on the forums. I have FMS 9.03 installed on a server running Windows Server 2003, and get the error "The database server is not available" whenever I go to the admin console. Everything I've found in the forums says this is usually caused by multiple instances of the software running on the same network using the same license. As far as I know, this is not the case in my situation. Whenever I get the message, I try to start the database server, and nothing happens. I check the event log (no indication of any problem), and check to make sure the service is running (it is). I have tried restarting the machine, as wel…

I am currently trying to modify an existing FM application - which I inherited and I am still trying to understand. Launchers are a new experience thrust upon me.... My issue is as follows: The application consists of a main database with its own launcher for users to gain access to the application. All users have privileges assigned etc. In addition there are various other launchers -lets call them task launchers- which are used either manually or via scheduled tasks (in windows). These launchers open up the main database and run scripts found therein. These scripts that are run from the main database email out reports or notifications from Outlook. …

I'm trying to diagnose why, at a clients office, all the Filemaker Pro clients are getting periodically disconnected from the FM Server. One of the things I'm investigating is the Stats Log file. At the time of the most recent disconnection, there is a sudden change in the numbers listed in the log. Before the disconnection it reads something like this: 01/14/2008 11:03:42 AM 0 0 100 0 5 5 01/14/2008 11:03:57 AM 0 0 100 0 5 5 01/14/2008 11:04:12 AM 0 0 100 0 5 5 01/14/2008 11:04:27 AM 0 0 100 0 5 5 01/14/2008 11:04:42 AM 0 0 100 0 5 5 01/14/2008 11:04:57 AM 0…

I have reported this problem to Filemaker and they issued a case number are looking into it. The issue is that once we installed FM Server 10 on a Windows 2008 server using Active Directory We get the error. This wasnt an issue while this was hosted on Windows 2003 Server. Clients are running FMP 10. Once we put the host back on the Win 2003 server there was no longer the same issue. Im thinking that Win 2008 has a permissions problem that are blocking the insert object. FMP 10 running as a stand alone on the Win 2008 server running not hosting via fms 1o doesnt have an issue. This is also an issue on all files not just one in particular. FM techs are scratching th…

We are using VMware 3.5 enterprise edition in a 3 host cluster configuration running FMSA 10.2.x on Win2003 Server. The database server does not start when Vmotion moves the FM server to another host. If the VM gets manually moved back to the original host, the db server starts and the databases come up. This becomes an issue if the original host goes down or the load balancer decides to move the FM server VM to another host. Is anyone else using VMware and have a solution to this? Thanks, John

Currently, our database files are stored on a secondary volume in our Xserve with scheduled backups to the 'default' backup folder (within the Filemaker Server folder on the main drive). It's high time we added an offsite backup, and I'd like to implement something slick and simple.... 1. Client user inserts USB stick into their Mac 2. Client clicks 'backup' script in FMPro 3. Server runs script to mount shared stick over network 4. Server runs backup script to store files on the stick 5. Server ejects network volume 6. Client receives confirmation that backup is complete Is this possible? Any thoughts on how I might achieve this....? Th…

We have been experiencing Database access that has been very slow lately during various times throughout the day. The slowness is noticed by the sort status bar, hour glass ,and coffee cup. The slowness can happen anytime during the day, but not always the same time. If you let it go it may correct itself in 20-30 minutes, and then run fine until the next day or later that day. I had IT check to make sure Norton was not scanning the Live DBs, and made sure that the system backup was not backing up the Lives DBs. The IT tech can not see any high activity to explain the slowness. If I have them reboot the server it is fine. And now I figured that if I disconnect all us…

Hi! I'm having performance problems an my database running on FMS9 OS X server 10.5.5. The server has 20GB RAM and enough ressources for the ~20-25 clients that are using the database. But - from time to time - a simple search over an indexed date field (~100k records) takes up to 1 minute. This problem is mainly not only appearing in the backup time (what was my first thought) but at different random times. Are there any known problems with this configuration?

Rnvironment: Windows 2003 Server (Active Directory - External Authentication) / FMS 10.02 / FMP 10.03/ Client: Windows XP SP3. I have now noticed this issue in several different locations that my company services. It seems that once the FMP 10.03 update came out there have been instances where the users may try to run the update and connot due to their restricted priveges. At that point it seems to corrupt their Windows profile. The only resolution is to delet the users profile and start over. I've never seen this before with any patches, but it seems to be happening more frequently. Best Regards Ron

Hello What do I need to do to make the system script of a scheduled script sequence FAIL? In the documentation it says that the system script needs to return "0" for the FileMaker Script portion to start. I observed this to be true with Server 10.0v1 on OS X Server 10.5.X Now I am running Server 10.0v2 on OS X server 10.6.2 and even a .sh file with nothing in it except #!/bin/sh will run, evaluate to true and let the fileMaker script run. All folders involved have read and write permission for fmsadmin, me, and fmserver. I'm entering this as a newbie here and from the looks of other topics, pushing the boundaries - but backwards! I'm also having to pick up an existing situation and make it work in new circumstances - if I can find a way. So I'm looking for any advice I can find, on a legacy setup that we have been running for many successful years as a multi platform installation. We are a small design business using a custom FM database for the last 15 or more years. Up until recently that has been on a G3 running OS8.5 and then 9.22. But now we have decentralised and need to run multi-site. So we have aimed at VPN as an interconnect solution. Since I believe pre OSX cannot su…

I have one manual that says that I need to configure FMS to use https:// from the "edit server deployment" wizard. However, there is nothing in the wizard that has anything to do with server security. So, a link to a good tutorial would be fantastic.
