Good Morning everyone, Is there a wqay to open a "New Window" using that script step without UNDOCKING the window you are starting from? I have a layout that is maxing out the screen real estate so I want a user to be able to call a "floating" button for information that is only required sometimes. However, when I use the "New Window" script step it undocks the original window giving me an undesired result. I know I could script a close window button in the new window that resets the original window, but something tells me there has to be a better way. Thanks in advance for any help. Steve

I wondered if there was a simple way to enable and disable tooltips - The idea being that I wanted to define the tooltips for each field and then have a script so the user can turn them on or off from a custom menu - a sort of help. The long way to do this seems to be a calculated result for each field with a global field holding the on/off status but I can see this as fairy time consuming. Any ideas would be appreciated thanks

I have a database with 2 tables. Both tables have a related field called "match". Table A keeps track of the dimensions associated with individual kitchen cabinets that my company produces. Table B keeps track of how many doors each individual cabinet has. The total quantity for all of cabinet doors is kept track of with a summary field that totals the individual doors from each cabinet. I would like to display the results of the summary fields from Table B in the header of a layout for Table A but I can't seem to make this happen. I have a table for hardware, clients, tickets, etc. Instead of using the "built-in" tabs feature in my layout for hardware, I'd rather choose from a drop down menu what kind of hardware it is (ie, computer, display, printer, router, etc). Once the "kind" of hardware is selected from the drop down menu, I'd like the appropriate layout to appear. I think I want to keep all of this on one table because there is some basic information that is similar no matter what kind of hardware it is (ie, hardwareID, Make, Model, SerialN). I see a big difference in the way Macs and PCs handle 'go to layout' commands and wonder if there's something I can do. I have scripts that visit multiple layouts while processing the data. On the MAC, only the 'Original' layout shows on the user's screen while all the 'go to's take place 'behind the scenes'. When I run the same scripts on a PC, each of the layouts gets displayed while the script is processing data on that layout. It creates a very herky-jerky, unacceptable, user interface. Short of getting all my users to buy MACs (not very likely), how can I control the undesired layout displays while the script is processing on the PCs? TIA

I have a layout where I show several menu items in a popdown menu and then the choices in a second popdown menu that change to reflect the choice in the first menu (only in a find layout). This setup uses an external data table (i.e. a second file) that stores the choices in the first popdown linked to the choices in the second. It works like a charm if I am using FMP8.5 directly. However, when I use this through IWP it doesn't work at all. I make the choice in the first popup and the second remains unpopulated. The second file is marked as being shared, so I don't know why this isn't working? Any suggestions? TIA

OK I understand the basic concepts of the conditional value list. But I still can't seem to be able to filter on TWO conditions. In my Cars database I can lists my years and using the conditional value list I can narrow down my car MAKES to the specified YEAR. But when I try this technique with my MODELS it shows all my models for the MAKE. I need to be able to filter this somehow so that my dropdown list for MODELS shows only the models available for the make and year selected. Hi Guys, Anyone know if I can scale the charts down. I've gone into the vw.html file and edited the width and height, which seems to have scaled down the graphics to the size I want but I cant seem to increase the fontsize. I have a calc that contains type=intermpie, which seems to display my chart. When I change the type to pie, the chart dissapears (I think I n eed to use pie to get the fontsize to work as this is used in the advanecd pie chart calc.) Any ideas why changing intermpie to pie stops the charting example from working...... I can post the code if that helps once I've got access to my computer.

I want to create a Value List from a related table using only some of the records based on examining fields in the related table. The create Value List dialog box only has 3 options: 1). Use values from field 2). Use Value List from another file 3). Use custom values In order to create this list I would have to examine fields from the related file to determine if that record should be included in the Value List. I have been building a database with training classes. I need to take attendance and keep track of which classes who attended and how long each class was for cumulative hours for continuing education re-certifications. I am able to use pull down menus for enetring names from the personnel database, but this is clunky because I have to scroll through each list of 60 values up to 35 times. I want to develop a checkbox solution for ease of data entry. Needless to say I have been very frustrated! Is what I want to do even possible? Am I missing a simple work around? Does anyone have any advice? HELP!!!

Hi, I see no reference to being able to sort a custom value list in this forum nor can find it in my "bible". I have a Custom Value List that users can update a client list in. I cannot see where (if at all possible) somewhere to sort this custom value list. It may be custom for a reason (hence no sorting) but as users will invariably muck up the alphabetical order I need a way to sort it - even empty it of blank entries. They like the Edit... function at the end of the list so the Custom seemed like a good idea. If I cant sort such a list, can anybody give me a better way to have this list auto sort, but still the ability to update it with the Edit... too…

I apologise if this has been asked before, I have been searching for hours and I have read the FM help. (over and over and over...) Basically I have a layout with a description which will need (occasionally) 4 pages of text with a total at the bottom. Since the text is of variable length I have stretched it to the maximum that it will need (as suggested in FM help) and used the sliding/printing option to shrink. Only when this happens it leaves 4 blank pages after the record. I tried adjusting the part 'body' option which removed the blank pages but when text was entered beyond one page it didn't print the extra pages either. So I'm not sure what I'm doing …

I'm working on a database for my babysitting company. In this example, there are three tables. Client, Job, ClientsChildren. I want a portal listing ClientsChildren for the Job. That's easy enough. But I want to be able to remove ClientChildren from the job with a script, without removing the ClientChildren from the client. So far if I delete row from a ClientChildren portal in the job layout, it removes the child completely from the database. I’m doing something wrong because my portal information went away after I changed a field to a calculation. Here is my set up: Table A layout: a global field with a popup menu of values from Table D (shows the number of disease categories currently in Table D) Table B: a calculation field as a text result that gives the same value as one of the possibilities in the popup menu based on a foreign key from Table D. I've got a portal set up that is inheriting the text colours from the related fields I'm dislaying. Resetting the portal field's text colour doesn't work - the text format for the field says it's already black (rather than colour-coded like the corresponding fields in the related file). This maybe out of the question but I was wondering if there is a way to use a field's contents as a custom menu list. The idea I had in mind was to have in my database a custom menu called "web links" - I have a table with a list of website URLs and when a new website address is added in the "websites" table , it would automatically appear under the web links menu, then switch to a layout with a webview in it. I have a very basic question re: portals. I have a database that holds contact info. We are now trying to add donor info in the easiest way possible. i have created a donor table to do this, but dont know how to create a primary id to relate the tables. i think that this would qualify as a one to many relationship because for each donor they have given multiple donations over the year. but i have no idea what to do with this info in terms of setting up a relationship. also i have created a portal on our main database contact form, so we can see how much each person has given for each of our fundraisers. i wanted to know how create a report from this so that we…

Hallo, I work with filemaker pro 6. I have created a one-to-many relationship and I now would like both, the data + the related data, to be displayed not only in the "view as a list" view, but also in the "view as a table" view. Both views are in the browse mode. If I switch to table view, Filemaker only shows one related field with one value. Hope this is the right section of the forum to post this.. I have a Category table. Each table has a optional parentID which refers to the CategoryID of its parent. I need to create a layout, suitible for printing. It needs to show the first category, then its child categorys, then the second category,... I have a user table with a field for user_ID, user_FirstName, user_LastName, and user_FullName (which is a calculated field from the first and last name). I have a database of records, each record has a serial number assigned by the registrar. I use a get function to first find the corresponding record at the registrar's site, then it locates the image associated with my record. The image is different for each record. I am using a webviewer to see the images, but it's a bit untidy. Some images are larger than others, horizontally and vertically and so the user must use the scroll bar (or the webviewer must be set quite large and consumes too much layout). I have been using FM7 for some time and have just upgraded to FM 8.5 advanced. It seems in FM7 you can only select a colour theme when creating a new layout and not superimpose one on an existing one- can anybody tell me if 8.5 can do that - I know I can manually change the colours in the header/body/footer. I have checked in the (downloaded) 8.5 documentation and I can find no mention of it. Any help would be great

Hi, Is it possible to add custom buttons to the menu pane to the left of the workspace, sometimes when I'm running scripts a button will appear to say continue, I have seen some that say exit. Also can you add buttons in preview mode, so that a user could export a sub-summary report? Cheers, Dan ;)

Now i know a number of ways of doing this ... but to be quite honest they all suck. I'm sure that i am missing something. I want to hilite the background of current record on a list view but i want to do it with a calculation and not by setting a global field. Problem is if a user switches to table view (and yes i lock the sidebar) i end up having to do all sorts of gymnastics to keep the current record hilited. I would also like this to be dynamic. I'm developing on Windows, but client will be on Mac. I've noticed that the tooltips seem to appear much more slowly on the Mac as opposed to Win. This is true even for tooltips that are straight text, so it's not about calculation speed. Anyone know why this is the case? And any way to speed it up? It's a problem because they take so long to appear that users are moving their mouse away, thinking no tooltip is coming.

I have a cond valuelistsystem, limked to 3 fields. A choice in field1 will generate the valuelist for field2 and that for field3. It's working well, no problem at that level. The problem is when the values need to be changed. When a user change the value in field1, and exit the record for whatever reason, the values in field2 and field3 are not correct. They still show the corresponding value from field1 (now changed). Is there a way to set field2 and field3 to empty, the moment the value in field1 is changed ? And to set field3 to empty the moment the value in field2 is changed ?

I access much our data via ODBC from web scripts. When I pull a field consisting of a value list via ODBC I get all checked items in that field separated by spaces. I can then split this out and use it however necessary in my web scripts...for the most part. I recently migrated a Mac running OS 9 and FM 5.5 to a Windows XP box running FM 8.5. There are about 20-25 databases that are searched through and worked perfect on the Mac. Since I switched over to the PC, I have been only getting read permissions although R/W permissions have been set. I can not search by web, but it is fine within FM. I also do not have a 'guest' option for people who I want to have read only access. Am I missing a setting? Please help.. This is driving me nuts. Thanks in advance.

Hi, I have set up an invoice layout, with each record having a few fields that repeat 12 times. However, often the number of fields doesn't reach this number, so i am left with a lot of blank space between each record. Is there any way to solve this problem ie so that the body section shrinks if the repetitions do not reach the max. The closest I've come is to just make multiple reports with different numbers of repetitions and then when it comes to printing the script can choose the best one. any ideas? many thanks

I am building a test management system for our company laboratory. This is my first project using FileMaker ( I took over this account from my predecessor whom much like my self was more familiar with traditional programming techniques. Hi, I'm having a problem trying to enter a value in a layout from a related table. Let say Two tables. evaluationFile (pkEvaluationID, fkSoldPropertyID) soldProperties (pkSoldPropertyID, ckSellNumber, address, blablabla...) Both table are linked via the pkSoldPropertyID -= fkSoldPropertyID. Bigger image The user cannot view the primary key (pk) field. He can only use the candidate key (ck). Hello. I have a text field. I also have a calculation field whose result is the text of the text field. On my layout I display the calculation field so that the field can be scrolled, but not edited. I have been playing with the attached sample file for the dwindling value list, but have struck a problem in that the dwindling list only displays if there is already a value in the matchfield. If the matchfield is empty (or contains just a pilcrow) the value list doesn't display. Hi Guys, Is is possible to change the background colour depending on whether the users is in a specific mode. I thought it maybe helpful to my users to identify when they are in Find Mode (as I have toggle hidden), and the best method to identify the mode you are in is to allow the background to change say into a pale pink instead of a traditional white which I intend to use for browse mode? Hi all I have a order table & a order_row table. In the order layout I have a tabbed interface with 4 tabs. Articles are added to the order_row table via a portal in the second tab. The information in the order_row tab are huge on each article added, so I can only show one article at a time, to see next article I have to scroll down in the portal. This makes it difficuld to get "the big picture" since I can't see all the articles. We recently upgraded to Filemaker 8.5. Before the upgrade when you went to "Window" in the menu it would list the files you currently have open. Now you get some files showing at the bottom and some are over in the "Show Window". Hope that makes sense. Question is: Is there a way to just make all the files open show in the main "Window" area annd not in the Show Window" area? There really doesn't even seem to be any logic as to what files show under "Window" or under "Show Window". Or am I missing something?

Hi All I am having trouble with portals when using my database via a web browser. At the moment I have a database with a layout that has two portals both related to a second database using the same relationship. One portal has 10 or more rows shows a small thumbnail image from the related record. The second Portal has only one row (quite large) showing a larger (though same) image from the related record. Can anyone direct me to instructions on building a 'picker' layout? I've got a data entry layout and want the user to choose a client's name from a list and have that client's id entered. Got same problem as another thread. "Customer" record includes "Active" flag: 1 if active, 2 if inactive. Defined new T.O. called "Customers_Active"; it is a self-join on Customers where g_Active = Active. (g_Active is 1 and global.) Defined Value List called "Active Customers" using Name field from "Customers_Active" T.O. Created Invoice layout, containing Name field that uses pop-up list using values from Active Customers. But the pop-up shows ALL names, not just active ones. Any suggestions? Thanks Chap.

Hello, Here is a file containing a report on the available layout space in relation to multiple screen states on Mac OS X 10.4. I am an experienced software developer but I am new to FileMaker and I have to make a simple application for a firm that lists hired people, the projects they are working on and so on... Is there anyway to simulate a hard refresh (ctrl+f5) in the webviewer? I've tried refresh window, flush cache... and also tried changing fields the viewer references for urls but it doesnt seem to want to properly refresh... Any ideas?

Hello, Where I work we have a database of items, and when possible, we note how things are made. Instead of having people free hand write down what the decorative processes of an item are, we want them to choose from a menu listing the processes (like cross-hatching, stippling, incising, etc). The purpose of this is maintaining vocab control. Is there a way to choose multiple options from a drop-down menu? Hi: On a Mac using Filemaker 8.5. I selected a fill color from the CMYK Sliders of: Cyan: 100 Magenta: 50 Yellow: 0 Black: 0 and applied it to a rectangle object. I have two interrelated tables. One contains an insertion ID (auto serial number), and Media Name (user entry text). The other contains a creative order number (auto serial number), Media Name (value list from first table), and Insertion ID (value list from first table). The insertion ID on Table 2 is based on the Media Name relationship, so that the drop-down list will only display insertion IDs created for that specific media, instead of all existing insertion IDs. Hi there I've been using FM now for about 2 years on and off mainly to produce databases primarily to manage my own projects and i'm self taught with no formal training. This is what i'm trying to do. I have two tables "JOBS" and "CONTACTS". One of the fields in "CONTACTS" is "working status". This is a pop-up menu with a value list assigned to it with the following values: Make initial contact Follow up Not interested Potential collaboration Working together In "JOBS" I want to create a pop-up menu of "CONTACTS" but I only want to list those that have a "working status" set to "Working together". I created a runtime (8.5 Advanced) tool to assist staff in entering data into our web based contact & businees management software. In short, as you flip through FM records, the correct contact appears in the viewer based on the contact ID's stored in FM. Using this method saves time since it takes 6 clicks and a search if you want to enter data directly from the website. Not efficient if you have 150-200 entries to make. The problem is that after scrolling through 25 or records, the solution bogs down and then freezes. I have 3 tables Client, GLCodes and ClientGLCodes. One Client can have many GLCodes and one GLCode can be assigned to many Clients. Hence ClientGLCodes table is created. On the Client Layout, I have a portal for ClientGLCodes where the Rate for the GLCodes can be updated for every client. So the ClientGLCodes portal on Client Layout has the following fields- Master Rate (Comes from GLCodes table), Client Rate, Rate Modified Date. Only the Client Rate can be modified here. Modified Date is defined as "TimeStamp" field in the table definition. The problem is that whenever a rate is modified, the Modified Date gets changed only after the user clicks out of the portal. …

I've inherited a layout that has multiple portals. In the second portal, I'm trying to let the user jump to the portal record in the related table but when they get there, they cannot make any changes because the record is "being modified in a different window". I thought I could add a 'commit' in the script that executes the jump to the related table, but once the commit step is executed, the portal becomes inactive and the 'Goto Related Record' step doesn't execute correctly. I am currently working on a new project with filemaker, and I need some help. I need to have the ability to store n files for one record. When i right click into a text field 3 options appear... Find Matching Records Constrain Found Set Extend Found Set Find Matching Records does what it says ... but i cant work out what the other 2 do as nothing happens when i click them and my only thought is to switch to find mode ... but it does not effect the search... I have a drop-down list which references nearly 20,000 records in a related table. When clicking on the drop-down for the first time in a session it takes about 30 seconds to load the information. Then when I want to select, say, "harry ..." and enter the letters "har", I am taken to the first record beginning with the letters "ar", and only when I then enter "har" am I taken to the first record beginning with the letters "har". This happens every time I click on the drop-down - the first letter in my search string is always ignored. The only way round this is to enter the first letter twice, eg. "hhar". Hi folks, Having trouble with this. It seems simple but it just doesn't work. I have a customer mailing list that must be sorted by a specific (Canadian) postal code order, required by Canada Post. Specifically, the first three digits of the postal code, which are ANA (alpha, numeric, alpha: for example J5A) The field itself is a text field, necessarily. I've got the required order in a value list. In the script, when I try to sort it by that list, it seems to work for the first few, then it seems to start over and pretty much go alphabetically. I have a portal showing records from a table one step away. I've placed a button entirely inside the portal row, and set it to run the script step Go To Related Record. GTRR is set to Get related record from the same table the portal is displaying, and set to Show only related record, match current record only. This script step brings me to the correct layout, but showing all the records in the portal, not just that one. Is this expected behavior? Is there a way to just get that one related record from the active portal row? Thanks DJ

I am wondering if I am able to have a dropdown list that shows only a select set of values from a table. I've been checking out my FM reference books for various value list / set functions. I have a field in my database for level. This could be interpreted as grade for the people in my database but not necessarily. I want to write a utility that checks if the level is in my grade value list (is it a valid member of my set - problem 1), what is its position in my value list (grades are not necessarily numeric so I can't add 1 to them - problem 2) so I can change it to the next grade in the value list (problem 3 - easy with the GetValue function if I can take care of problems 1 & 2). Hi, I have a file that is behaving strangely. When changing the view between Form and List modes, either manually or through a script, the program always asks "Do you wish to save this change with layout?" Under Preferences/Layout: "Save changes automatically (do not ask)" is checked. This happens only when the file is opened from server, when opened locally there is no question. I'm pretty sure what I want here is not possible in FMP, but thought I'd double check. I've got a checkbox field that is conditional. Depending on other fields, it'll sometimes show some options, sometimes others. In addition, I want it to sometimes offer no options - in other words, it should sometimes be blank. I can get my value list to be empty when it should be, but then the checkbox field, instead of being blank, shows a single checkbox labeled "no values defined". I take it there's no way to avoid that in this case, without using a layout trick like selectively hiding the field using a portal? (I was hoping to avoid that because the field in q…

I have a database that keeps track of the tasks that need to happen in my cabinetshop. Each time a task is noted, a record is created with information about the task. These tasks are prioritized with the values 1 thru 10. I would like to view these top ten priorities via a portal on another layout. As the priorities are re-arranged, I would like to see the portal information reflect the changes.
