Hi, The company I work for are updating their server, desktops and software. We have purchased a new server and FileMaker Server 10, the OS on the server is Windows Server 2003 64-bit version. As I was going through the set up of FileMaker Server it said that it must be installed on a dedicated database server and not on an email, print or network server. Our server will be used for these purposes but the GB and Ram is more than capable of dealing with these tasks. Is FileMaker alright to run on the main server? Thanks Becky

Hi, I set up a server (or am trying to) but when I opened the files on the server computer, I get the message "filemaker cannot share files because another user is already sharing files using filemaker Pro on this computer." When I do an open remote from a different computer, I can see the server and the IP address under local hosts, but nothing in the available files. If I type in one of the files after the slash I get the message ""file" could not be opened. Either the host is not available or the file is not available on that host" What am I doing wrong. The server is connected, the files all say normal. The privelege sets are set properly. EEEEK! Mike

Hi: I am unable to gain full access to a hosted "opener" file using my username and password from my computer. I get message "Your access privileges do not allow you to perform this action." All other hosted files (8) open correctly in full access mode with the same username and password. If I close the file in FM Server, copy it to my desktop, it will then accept my name & password and open in full access mode. That made me suspect an OS X permissions issue, but I've quadruple checked permissions while being hosted, they are set correctly, and identically, to all other hosted files. I've retrieved the original file from a back-up, made sure usern…

I'm running Filemaker Server 10 on a Windows 2008 Server box. From the Filemaker Pro clients, if I choose File -> Open -> Remote - I can see the server - but the databases/files I am hosting do not appear. I'm not sure where to go from here: Details: For years, we ran Filemaker 9 Server on an SBS 2003 box. We had Filemaker Pro 9 on the desktops, and we had no problem using the Filemaker Pro client and going file -> open -> remote and clicking on the server name in the left hand pane and the files in the right hand pane. We only used it as a database server - not at all web publishing. We recently upgraded our server from SBS 2003 to SBS 2008 wh…

I'm working on a FMS9A -> FMS10A upgrade right now, and running into the same problem I've run into every time I've attempted such. What I do each time is uninstall FMS9A then install FMS10A. Every time I do this, when FMS10A gets all configured, it's web server connector is not working properly. Whenever a mod_jk path is requested, it doesn't properly map it. Eg, if I request http://www.servername.com/fmi/iwp/, Apache thinks it's a normal request and throws an error, instead of it being properly mapped by mod_jk to the WPE. I do know the WPE is running properly, as if I use a second web server to connect to the WPE on the upgraded box, it works fine - sin…

Hi. I'm having issues getting our FileMaker 10 Advnaced visible on the public Internet. The documetion is a bit "light" on what needs to be moved/copied from where to get this working. Here's the background. We have IWP running, with no problems, on our internal network. This is on IIS, Server 2k3. I have mapped a public url and IP to point to a dedicated IP address, and setup the firewall to forward and NAT translate the public IP address to the private internal IP address. DNS entries are configured so that the same url works both internally and externally. The internal DNS entry points to the internal IP address of the server, 10.1.1.155, and the…

I have two Macs (one Snow Leopard and the other Leopard). The Leopard computer wants to have access to a FM6 database hosted on the Snow Leopard computer. However, when I attempt to Open Remote I never see the other databases. This used to work but since upgrading to SL on the Mac it no longer works. Any suggestions?

I was wanting to add a simple old .fp5 db to my server files. I opened the db with FMP9 to convert it to .fp7 format and then tried to use the "upload a database" function in Server. However the server fails to see the file. I can't find anything in any documentation about this. I thought the problem might be found with "sharing and permission" using get info, but I can't find anything wrong there. Any ideas anyone ?

I recently developed a solution at work using FMpro 10 A. I have it installed at my workstation and the solution files (6) are saved to the server's drive. Would anyone know if it's possible to run the FMSA9 Web Publishing Engine on a Snow Leopard Server? We have a two machine configuration, both OS X 10.5 Server, with FMSA9 on one and the WPE on the web server. I'd like to upgrade to 10.6 but without the time or expense of upgrading Filemaker Server. I'm aware that FMS9 itself will not run on 10.6 but I'm hoping that doesn't apply to the WPE

Error capture is not compatible with running scripts from the server. (This is documented in the Help pages at http://www.filemaker.com/help/html/scripts_ref1.36.14.html but confusingly the step is not greyed out when you select "Server" for compatibility in the scripting window.) Also, a find that returns 0 records will prompt an error that causes the script to halt when run on the server. Does this mean that I have to verify that any find will return at least one record before running the find? The bizarreness of this query makes me think I am missing something...

Hello I'm not much of a server expert so I really need your advice here. For the development stage of our filemaker solution, I used FM Servers 9 on a workstation running Windows XP sp2. Now the business is upgrading to a new server and I would very much like to Use FM Server 10. The new server will be running on Windows XP sp3. I can't find if it's ok or not. We have less than 10 users. Most of the users are using Windows XP sp2, some sp3. Most user will access the database with FM9 We hope to have the database available to our main office in another city. (everything in the server side is setup for it already) I'd like to be able to work on the d…

FM Server Adv 10 hosted on Mac Pro with OSX Server 10.5. IWP works if path is specified as machinename.local/fmi/iwp but fails if path is /fmi/iwp with 404 File not found. Problem resolved if turn off OSX web service on server, however I want to use the OSX web service in addition to IWP. Adding a redirect works for local subnet, but not on external subnet via VPN. VPN access works OK if OSX web service is off. It seems to be a name resolution problem - any suggestion for a fix/workaround? Ian B

We are having some slowdown in our solution and I'm trying to use the log of usage statistics to narrow down the problem. However, I have no idea if the numbers are high or not. The FileMaker documentation will say "If the number is high, then..." but I have no idea if the number is high or not. One thing that seems weird to me is that I've got it reporting over a 100 remote calls/second. Can anyone give me insight into what they would consider "normal" ranges for these numbers?

Hi, We've recently had to clean install the system on a G4 Power Mac and as a result are now trying to re-install the FM Server Software from CD. However, as soon as I double click on the installer icon, the installer crashes unexpectedly. The G4 runs OX 10.4.11 and I've run all software updates. In the original installation guide it says it requires Java 5.0 (32bit 1.5.0_13). I think we're actually now passed that version. Could that be the problem? Any helps would be most appreciated. Hello All- I have a client that is using FileMaker 9 Pro and FMS 9 hosting a total of 8 related files. FMS is on a Server 2003 machine and 10 clients are accessing it via XP machines. The problem is this, when launching the Main files that stores the Login script that subsequently opens up the 7 other related files, the login process takes about a minute and a half. Under NORMAL condition this takes about 10 secs. The difference in login times is making our clients a lil mad. Things that I have notice that is somewhat different from most server-client relationship are: 1. Client is on a different subnet that server 2. Client Profile is stored on a Ne…

Each group is has a number designated to their group in a field called “reged” Group one’s number is 55, group two’s number is “99” and Group three’s number is “4”. I have 2 layouts in the database. I want group 1 (the #55s) to got to layout 1 and group 2 (the 99s) and 3 (the 4s) to go to layout 2 when they login. I also want to find and show only the people in their group when they go to the layout. The "Send Message" dialog window in the FileMaker Server Admin Console states that "Messages are displayed in a dialog that must be dismissed by the FileMaker Pro user." But what actually happens is that the message appears to the user in a dialog window stating "(this dialog will be dismissed in 30 seconds.)". Then the 30 counts down to 0, and the window disappears without any action from the user. Is this a known bug? Is there a workaround? I want the message to persist. Just when I thought my project was over its just beginning again. I wasnt sure where to post this but felt its more advanced than basic so its here. I've got a twist on a problem I've seen on the forums. I have FMS 9.03 installed on a server running Windows Server 2003, and get the error "The database server is not available" whenever I go to the admin console. Everything I've found in the forums says this is usually caused by multiple instances of the software running on the same network using the same license. As far as I know, this is not the case in my situation. Whenever I get the message, I try to start the database server, and nothing happens. I check the event log (no indication of any problem), and check to make sure the service is running (it is). I have tried restarting the machine, as wel…

I am currently trying to modify an existing FM application - which I inherited and I am still trying to understand. Launchers are a new experience thrust upon me.... These launchers open up the main database and run scripts found therein. These scripts that are run from the main database email out reports or notifications from Outlook. …

I have reported this problem to Filemaker and they issued a case number are looking into it. The issue is that once we installed FM Server 10 on a Windows 2008 server using Active Directory We get the error. This wasnt an issue while this was hosted on Windows 2003 Server. Clients are running FMP 10. Once we put the host back on the Win 2003 server there was no longer the same issue. Im thinking that Win 2008 has a permissions problem that are blocking the insert object. FMP 10 running as a stand alone on the Win 2008 server running not hosting via fms 1o doesnt have an issue. This is also an issue on all files not just one in particular. FM techs are scratching th…

This may be a silly question, but I appreciate your help in the matter anyway! We currently have hourly backups running of the served database. I'm able to see where the hourly backups are being stored without a problem. But, when I go to find the current database files being served, I go to the location that I initially served them from and it's not been modified since the date I originally began serving it. If you can shed any light on where or how I could locate the actual current file, that would be wonderful! Thanks :)

We are using VMware 3.5 enterprise edition in a 3 host cluster configuration running FMSA 10.2.x on Win2003 Server. The database server does not start when Vmotion moves the FM server to another host. If the VM gets manually moved back to the original host, the db server starts and the databases come up. This becomes an issue if the original host goes down or the load balancer decides to move the FM server VM to another host. Is anyone else using VMware and have a solution to this? Thanks, John

I can't access my work database from my home fmp. I enter the fmnet:/ipaddress/filename in Open Remote and get an immediate error that it could not be opened (not available etc.). I have tried all the obvious checks: The file is open, network sharing is on. This computer has a static ip and is not behind a firewall. I turned off my network filtering software. Perhaps most telling, I even signed up for an trial account with an FMP hosting service and still couldn't access it. Called their tech support who tried it and accessed it fine. So it seems clear it is a problem on my local machine. I am rather stumped and have spent way too many hours …

I already am using the FMP 10 Adv. which is what I was after. Anyway... I don't see where I have a need for the Server version myself because I don't run off a server. I just have my database on my single bus. pc. Questions: Is there anything that a small guy would use this for? What kind of value is there in reselling it? This is not a fax question, but a file server/access problem. I need to learn what permissions need to be set on a PC to allow FM Server to recognize a file that is dropped into a watch folder. We have a PC with a fax server on it (GFI brand). Filemaker Server 9 is on the PC, and when a user sends a fax, Filemaker drops a text file into a watched folder, and the GFI Faxmaker processes and sends the file. Works great. We are switching to a Mac to host the Filemaker Server 9 solution, and when Filemaker drops the text file into the watched folder on the networked PC, Faxmaker will not process the file. Any suggestions as to what I need to set, or how to tie t…

Essentially, IWP started going up and down a few weeks back. It started doing so more and more frequently early last week until finally (and this is when they called us) it wouldn’t come back up again. To bring it back up, they were just pushing the “green gears” button in FMS 9 Admin Console. At the point we started looking into it, the whole system locked up. FMApp access went down and then FMS Admin Console and fmsadmin utility became unresponsive. We did a complete re-install of FMS9. They weren’t even 24 hours and bam, its at it again. Came up for 1 1/2 hours this morning and crashed. Was up again for maybe 3 hours until just now. Crashed. Space on the c: drive …

Currently, our database files are stored on a secondary volume in our Xserve with scheduled backups to the 'default' backup folder (within the Filemaker Server folder on the main drive). It's high time we added an offsite backup, and I'd like to implement something slick and simple.... 1. Client user inserts USB stick into their Mac 2. Client clicks 'backup' script in FMPro 3. Server runs script to mount shared stick over network 4. Server runs backup script to store files on the stick 5. Server ejects network volume 6. Client receives confirmation that backup is complete Is this possible? Any thoughts on how I might achieve this....? Th…

We have been experiencing Database access that has been very slow lately during various times throughout the day. The slowness is noticed by the sort status bar, hour glass ,and coffee cup. The slowness can happen anytime during the day, but not always the same time. If you let it go it may correct itself in 20-30 minutes, and then run fine until the next day or later that day. I had IT check to make sure Norton was not scanning the Live DBs, and made sure that the system backup was not backing up the Lives DBs. The IT tech can not see any high activity to explain the slowness. If I have them reboot the server it is fine. And now I figured that if I disconnect all us…

Server 10 Windows 2003 VMWare. Database is working fine and being hosted out ok. BAckup was working fine until last Friday. now when I try to do a backup it says permission denied in the schedule pane's status. When I look at the schedule assistant, it tells me the path is valid. I've tried several locations to no avail. The 3 drives on the Server are all VMWare Virtual Scsi disks. IT tells me nothing has changed.... any ideas on how to resolve? thanks in advanced.

I'm mid-process developing a system comprising around 60+ tables with around 250+ TOs. Some of the layouts feature multiple filtered portals on separate TABS - these are the ones giving the problem. The refresh window command (by hand or script) doesn't always reset the cached results for all the related tables on the separate TABS even though they are on the same window - there are 7 TABS, each with it's own portal from a TO. I'm simply doing: Go to Layout Refresh Window [Flush chached join results] This does NOT happen when using the file single-user, but the caching problems occur when opening the file from a hosted point, either FMS or FMP. My fi…

Hi! I'm having performance problems an my database running on FMS9 OS X server 10.5.5. The server has 20GB RAM and enough ressources for the ~20-25 clients that are using the database. But - from time to time - a simple search over an indexed date field (~100k records) takes up to 1 minute. This problem is mainly not only appearing in the backup time (what was my first thought) but at different random times. Are there any known problems with this configuration?

I created a solution with FM Advanced 9. This solution uses FM files hosted on a FM Server 9 under Windows XP Professional. The client machines use FM Pro 9 under Windows XP. So far everything worked well and still working normally, but we have to renew our hardware and... I add a new client machine with Windows 7. As the only officially supported FM under Windows 7 is FM 10, I install this version (still in trial period because I haven't bought the upgrade from 9). When I try to use my solution on the FM10/Win7 machine, the process of opening and closing files is very slow (about 5 minutes while it takes only a few seconds on the FM9/WinXP client…

We have successfully gotten it to host databases to FileMaker clients however we cannot get the web publishing, XML, XSLT or PHP to work. We try to navigate to the test pages with the test database we just get HT to be 503 errors. We uninstalled SharePoint and uninstalled FileMaker server and rebooted and reinstalled and still have the same problem. Thank you in advance, Shawn

We have a FM10 database. Someone is offering to host the database for us on a FM8 server. I was wondering if this will cause any problems. Our database was built on the separation model. Here is the scenario: The data file, which has no layouts and very few scripts, on FM8 server; the interface file, which has all the layouts and most script and uses a lot of new FM9 and FM10 features, on FM10 clients.

Rnvironment: Windows 2003 Server (Active Directory - External Authentication) / FMS 10.02 / FMP 10.03/ Client: Windows XP SP3. I have now noticed this issue in several different locations that my company services. It seems that once the FMP 10.03 update came out there have been instances where the users may try to run the update and connot due to their restricted priveges. At that point it seems to corrupt their Windows profile. The only resolution is to delet the users profile and start over. I've never seen this before with any patches, but it seems to be happening more frequently. Best Regards Ron

Hello What do I need to do to make the system script of a scheduled script sequence FAIL? In the documentation it says that the system script needs to return "0" for the FileMaker Script portion to start. I observed this to be true with Server 10.0v1 on OS X Server 10.5.X Now I am running Server 10.0v2 on OS X server 10.6.2 and even a .sh file with nothing in it except #!/bin/sh will run, evaluate to true and let the fileMaker script run. Filemaker Server v9.0.3 on Mac OSX 10.5.8 All scheduled and manual attempted backups by FM Server to the default backup folder have suddenly returned a message "access denied". All folders involved have read and write permission for fmsadmin, me, and fmserver. This was working fine for months, then out of the blue (well, I'm sure there was some event that caused it but I haven't been able to determine what) it stopped working. I created a new schedule, same result. I tried manual initialization, same result. The server confirms the path as valid. Everything is at root. I repaired disk permissions and came up with three items that are not on Apple'…

Hi I am a Filemaker Pro 10 user for Mac. I have created a layout, and used a calculation field to create a path to a file located remotely, from a remotely mounted AFP volume. I created a button called "Open Movie in Quicktime Player", and set that button to "Send Event". I've set up the target application to "Quicktime Player". If I explicitly choose the file on the AFP volume, (browse to it, locate the file) Filemaker will place the string (for this record) "filemac:/1400_GB_RAID/2008-01-11 at 16_14_11.mov" into the field, and the button works. Hi All, I need some feedback on some issues. I have a solution that is inside an Internal Network (My company's internal network) Having web solutions for our costumer can be a bit difficult since they have to log in to the network, via VPN. Is it possible to build web solutions since the filemaker DB is inside the filewall for my costumer and not have them log in to the network(basically having it accessible to anybody)? If this cannot happen, can I have filemaker on a different server, in which I can build web solutions from that DB? How can I effectively exchange data from this 'new filemaker DB' on a different server outside the firewall to the main DB that…

If this is posted in the wrong area, please feel free to move it where it needs to be. We are looking at deploying a pretty large system to our three office locations. We are using the separation model, and will be placing an interface file at each of these locations that connects to a centrally located set of files that will store all the data for all three locations. My question revolves around the bandwidth necessary between the three locations to accomplish this without slowing the entire system down to an unusable speed. There are between 50 and 70 users at each location. Is there some resource that I can reference that would help in determining how …

Hello, Our orgainzation is renumbering IPs throughout, and our FileMaker server machine will also be renumbered. We are running FMSA10 on Windows Server 2008. Does this present any special problems for the server, other than adjusting any address I have coded into the various areas on the admin console? I have not been able to find anything about this in the docs. The machines are named, so users should not be effected by the change. If anyone out there has any experience with this, I would appreciate hearing about it. Thanks, Barbara
