I'm a psychologist and have used FMP to do my billing (on HCFA 1500 paper) for years. I had my database customized recently so I can bill electronically. The script works fine in FMP 6 but I want to upgrade to FMP 8. The script doesn't work in FMP 8. I get a dialogue box that says "Billing_Output.txt could not be created on this disk. Use a different name, make more room on the disk, unlock it or use a different disk." I have looked at both scripts using Scriptmaker and don't see any obvious discrepancies. Any ideas? Thanks!

Sometimes I get an error message in FileMaker like this: "FileMaker can not read the disk where the file is located. Select continue to retry or quit in order to copy the file to other disk" (this is a translation of the original message in Spanish) The question is that the option "retry" does never work. You have to quit FileMaker. This message was not very frequent in the past, but this year I have crashes almost every day. It usually happens during the running of several scripts that include importing steps. I have tried to increase FileMaker RAM assignment and I have a lot of free hard disk space. I hope it's the right place to ask this. I'm having a little bit of a problem with a database: users get "cannot modify this record, it's already in use by..." when they try to create a new record in a portal. I have used Access a little but am on a Mac now. I imported my data from excel, saved thfile and want to perform some simple consolidation of data (i.e. i have line item by day but i want to sum it by month and add a column for the # of occurrences). I tried to do the query but it said i need to select the ODBC database. I don't get it. Also, if this is not simple to do than please let me know so i can find someone to do it for me. thanks ari

I'm - once again - thinking of moving to a current version of FMP, now using 6. Not that it would not do what I need it to do, but I may want to have a searchable database on the Internet and have no wish to learn MySQL, PHP and stuff like that. Downloaded the free trial. Tried to convert a single file. Could not access it "with this account & password" (or whatever it said). Removed groups, gave full access to my good friend Ms No Password and voilà! Tried to use Instant Web Publishing. Nothing happens. "No databases found." With FMP 6 Web Companion I have had the file published occasionally for a co-worker to edit from home - slow, ugly, but works. …

Hi, I've many field by records, but only 3-4 of them are real data inputed by the user, the other field are here for GUI display etc. Those non user filed must be updated with replace steps cripts, imports etc. I've set a modifcation date auto enter filed, but unfortunately it gets updated during maintenance script execution, thus erasing the real user modification date. I need to track user modification of those few user field only, and the creation of the record by user. Hi For sometime now, and only in Filemaker, my printer is unable to print the numbers 2, 3, 4 and sometimes 5. Instead I just get a square. This only happens intermittently. For instance it might print the number 22 and only the second 2 comes out as a square. Has anyone heard of anything like this? I print using an Epson Acu Laser C1100n This problem does not happen with any other application and I have tried several different Fonts in Filemaker. Very annoying. I'm building a template file with things I want for all or many new files, like scripts, a few layouts, etc. It will undergo periodic modification over time. While this file goes through many revisions, it has very little data in it. Aside from the usual conventions for reducing the chance of corruption of a file, I'm looking for any recommendations for helping to reduce the chances of such a starter template file getting corrupted and the corruption being carried forward to solutions based on it. Should a new file be periodically built and the parts of the existing template be imported or recreated? Or is it mainly indexes and data that are of concern? Thanks. Ken

Hi - I guess this would be the correct forum for my question, but sorry if it isn't... it sounded the closest. I recently upgraded to 8.5 at work, and now I'm seeing some strange behavior. I have a "Notes" field in my file that works just fine for some records, but for others it will not let me type anything in. When I click into the field and try to type, I get the pop-up error dialog that says, "Before typing, press Tab or click in a field, or choose the New Record menu command." Hello, I am the Filemaker contractor for a business that has used Filemaker for years. They have a huge investment in scripts, layouts, and plugins all based on FMP version 5/6. We need to upgrade our server from FMP 5.0 Server to FMP 5.5 Server. (see below) Filemaker seems to have flushed all copies of both the full and the upgrade versions of FMP 5.5 Server from the retail chain. I am hoping someone out there will have a copy that they can sell us. Ideally, it would be an unopened copy so that no EULA violations would occur. t seems that I've posted my question to the wrong forum, sorry I'm new in here, so I hope that this time it's OK -) --------------------------------------- I've imported an application from FM version 6 to version 8.04 advanced. Before importing I've remamed all the Scrips so that I can find them once all the databases imported to a main base as tables. I have just downloaded 8.5 to play with web views ... plugged my laptop into my new 20 inch cinema display .... tried dragging a fresh new template from my laptop to my cinema display to find that it bounced right back to the laptop.... All previous versions allows this. So must be a bug. This is a nightmare for my clients who work on laptops and cinema as well as me as i bought the thing recently to have more desktop space to develop my FileMaker Solutions... Anyone else had this!!! Hello all, When I go to insurors off the main menu it gives me the screen that you see in the insurorsfm.jpeg attached. I know the data is there because it shows up for other peoples computers. Also if I go to Leases and look under Insurance info it gives me that drop down list and all the insurance companies are there. As you can see in insurorsfm.jpeg the other tabs are blank. But they actually do go where they are supposed to. As you can see in bankfm.jpeg everything fills in when I click on the banks tab. Its pretty weird stuff. Anyone seen this before? I really hope so. I have a database with about 400,000 records in it. I recently went to change a particular field in the database affecting about 120,000 records by using the "replace" function. Basically, changing the name in a field from "Jason" to "Matt". It processed all but about 400 records and generated an error message indicating such. I then performed a find function for "Jason" records which found the 400 records that appeared to be completely empty. These records were, however, uneditable. Hi there I'm having trouble after migrating to FM8 from FM5 where i can't seem to be able to tell it to close certain files that are open in the background once they were opened once. Example is when I go to a particular layout in database X that calls on another database to open say database Y, and even if i go out of that layout in db X to another one that doesn't require db Y, I still can't get FM to close db Y. There are no other files open that I can see that require db Y but I can't get it to close it!! what can i do? am i missing something??

I have a products file that was built in FMP 6.0 and I could really use your help and recommendations before adding it to a new solution Iâ��m building in FMP 8. My question is, is their any reason to build the solution differently from 6 into 8. A picture tells a 1000 words so Iâ��ve attached a picture of what the layout looks like. Ok... i have a database set up using filemaker unlimited (i think 5.5) and I am doing custom web publishing using CDML. I have a form that is just one drop down box and it is set to submit onChange(). so everytime the drop down menu changes the form submits, normally it works fine. the problem occurs if you are in the drop down box and accidently hit the scroll wheel on the mouse. it cycles through a bunch of the options really fast and I guess this causes it to submit multiple times and this ends up locking up the databases in unlimited and they have to be restarted. Has anyone else run into this issue, and if so have you found any way around it?

I work in the convention industry and handle a great deal of speakers, depending on the show, and use a Filemaker template I made up to handle the check in process. I was wondering if the new version of FM could create a folder with the speaker's vitals ( Name, date of talk, room number )when they were processed in my check in procedure? Ex. J Smith is checked in and automatically a folder is created that has Time, Name, Day and Room of his talk. I've never actually used the Calculation part of field validation, but here's what I'm wanting to do. I have a tasks table, inside that table I have a Date Field, a Start Time Field, and an End Time Field. No records start time and end time can overlap another records. And I need a way to check for that. Sure, I could use a script to do this, searching by date and then checking the times recrod by record. But then I got to thinking about List and GetNthRecord functions and wondered if this might be possible in a calculation. Just wondering what a few of the more experienced users think here.

I am having a very strange problem with one computer and was hoping to get some ideas or advice before I resort to reformatting the hard drive. I am running Windows XP, and Filemaker 8.5 Advanced. When I start Filemaker, it takes 4-7 minutes before I see the splash screen and the File Open dialog. If I immediately quit Filemaker, it will restart in about 3 seconds. Hello, all-- I'm about to rebuild our relational databases in FMP 8.5, finally upgrading from FMP6 (and FM Server 5.5). For those of you who have done this already, can I expect to see an improvement in performance over the WAN? Even over T1, my remote users in Chicago are telling me how extremely S - L - O - W our FMP6 databases are to work with. Slow to launch, slow to search (especially data in portals), slow to scroll/redraw, etc. I'm also wondering if performance might improve if I move FM Server out from behind NAT and put it in the DMZ instead. Any comments/suggestions greatly appreciated. Thanks much.

Just wondering what those with larger customer base (100+) do in regards to VLA Maintenance? Here's my thinking based on a recent renewal quote: The pricing works like this: pay 50% for renewal every year or 100% each time we decide to upgrade. So yearly maintenenace renewal is only cheaper when you plan on upgrading every year. If you upgrade every other year it’s a break even situation but you have the benefit of spreading the payments. Anything over 3 years then is a waste of money. It took my company 5 years to move from 5.5 to 8.5 although I was only hired in the last year and a half. Hi I have a database being served from Filemaker 6.0v4 with Web Companion 6.0v3. The data is published via CWP CDML pages. This was working just fine from stored URLs but has stopped working since the number of records in a found set has exceeded 100. The interesting thing is if the -max tag is set to 74 or less the data is returned, if I set it to 75 it returns no data. Scenario: FMPA8.5, started in 8 Files UI, DataA, DataB UI display a record from a table in DataA with tabs. DataA has the usual plethora of tables for a project tracking system. DataB, with two tables, each with a handful of fields, is only for container attachments to two tables in DataA. I love FMP, as much as I hate it. And since I love it a lot, God knows I hate it ! -) My hater, my huge time wasting, is mainly due to ergonomic stuff that should have been from day 1, but that we still suffer 15 years after. I have noticed that, when cutting and pasting into a field, that the formatting information is copied from the source of the cut instead of from the definition of the field. I find this quite annoying as it makes my database look more and more irregular over time. I have two questions: 1) Is there a way to force the use of the field definition when cutting and pasting into a field? 2) How can I reset the formatting information to that of the field definition after it has been changed by cutting and pasting? I'd like to build a simple flat-file database of about 200 records (flat-file), each record containing about 25 fields and a couple of photographs. Then I'd like to build web pages from this data. I installed FM 8.5 and FM 8.5 advance on some of our systems. Some major features are missing. I can't convert a FM 6 DB. After borrowing someone's system and got the DB converted, I'm able to do the basic fuctions with the DB, but not able to do "save copy as..". The error msg says: This command cannot be used by this installation of FileMaker. It seems like the SW I got only allow to do simple browse/edit features. Hi there, It seems when I (and users) try to export from a file it freezes Filemaker (v5.5 OSX, host on OSX). It seems only to be from one file with 130,000 records. From what I can tell, it's from file curruption. Changes are the backups have the same curruption and I've read the recover command usually doesnt work (havent tried yet since it will stop work for at a critical time). Does anyone have any fixes to this? I recall this happening a couple years ago, and i managed to fix it, but of course soon forgot how i did it. :

In version 8 I was getting consistently bloated PDFs (sometimes 100MB+) when using the Save as PDF script step, but in 8.5 this problem seems to have disappeared - has anyone else noticed this? I have not seen it listed in the 'New features'. (8.5 advanced / Mac OS X 10.4.7)

Just created a new related record to use as a related database. Working fine on Mac but all Windows users get unexpected quit when that particular file opens. I had to create a navigation scheme to keep Win clients from opening that file. I currently host FM5 Server on Windows NT (WS) to small group of Mac OSX on Classics and Win XP & Win 2000 clients. Peak records 46. Peak Users 10. I am sorry if my replies to help aren't timely as I will be in and out this week.

A coworker has this problem. FM Dev 6x on a Dell Laptop (win 2000). FM Server 5.5 on mixed platform OSX and Win2000 Server. She can connect to the files served on the Macs, but if she connects to a PC server first, she crashes. (if she connects to the Mac first, she can connect to the PC later with no problem). When she first connects to the FM network, her Zone alarm shows that Filemaker attempts to access the internet at 255.255.255.255 port 5000. This is not an address on our network (or subnet mask). Hi, all!!! I am using the developer utilities to ENABLE KIOSK mode for non-admin accounts. Help: My problem is based on calculating how many pieces of paper I get from a specific paper size. In printing one way to find how many pieces we get, is using the following math work. I write the size of the original paper, and then I write the size I need. By canceling the number I find how many pieces of paper come out of the original size. I work it out like an algebra problem. The original size on the top, on the bottom the size I want. By crossing (dividing o canceling) numbers I find out how many pieces I get. Hello, In 8.0 I've found the commit/revert record feature to be user-UNfriendly, specifically because of the following scenario: If a user inadvertently clicks outside of a field while entering data, then he/she is presented with a "Save changes to layout?" dialog, provided the "Save record changes automatically" option is unchecked in Layout Setup. This can get quite annoying after a while. Has this behavior changed at all in 8.5? I was hoping to be able to suppress this dialog.

My NoteLog field is broken on v8.5! I had happily used the trick of two fields and the auto enter calculation to keep timestamped notes. After upgrading to 8.5 this seems broken completely! The fields fail to update and the calculation no longer considers which field was created first. In other words, the NewNote Field clears but the NoteLog field does not update with the NewNote data! This is scary. I have quite a few places where this was keeping perfect track of things and now it's not functioning at all. I haven't read around much yet to see how to deal with this but this is a real problem. Nathan

Is it me or is IWP completely useless for publishing web applications. I think Filemaker pro is an outstanding product for RAD, however its local client and web publishing still suffers from massive screen flashing and redraw issues. I have been able to create a top notch application with this product, and with the help of the good people at this forum. But, not having the ability to deploy my application becomes a problem. Are there any fixes on the way? Does Filermaker 8 server resolve this problem? Is filemaker even aware of this? The knowledge base offers no response. I thought filemaker code gets compiled into flash or java, there really shouldnt…

Hi, I design database applications for a company that is sloooow to adopt new revisions.. so I'm sure we won't be upgrading to 8.5 for quite some time. In the meantime, are there ways that I can plan for the future while continuing to improve my solutions now.. (while minimizing the need to redo them to incorporate the niceties of 8.5) ? for example.. I'm wondering how Object Features may make developing easier & better for me and better for the users.. and am hoping to not spend a lot of time on an interfact tactic now if it will be much better using objects. thx. beta

I'm using a very simple FileMaker Pro 6.0v4 on two networked Macs. After upgrading to Mac OS X 10.4 (Tiger), I now get error messages on the connecting Mac when I try to access the database over the network on the Mac that is hosting it. Then the only way it will work is to use "Open Remote" feature. Is there a know problem with FM Pro v6 on Tiger? Do I need to upgrade my FM Pro? Thanks, Eric

Has anyone gotten the example plugin to compile on Intel? I just tried it and got a ton of warnings and one error, which really looks like a lot of errors (undefined symbols). I was hoping it'd just build, since I didn't make any changes to the project. Did FileMaker even try this out? Thanks

I just upgraded from 8.0v3 Pro (NOT Advanced) to 8.5 Pro Advacned. My databases are hosted with FMP 8.0v4 Server on a Dual G5 XServe. While working on my 20" 1.8Ghz G5. A couple of things I have noticed. 1. Sorting is noticably slower with 8.5 Adv than with 8.0 Pro. 2. Also, I have a script that launces, updates other dbs then hides other FMP databaes. Since I've upgraded to 8.5 Advance, it no longer hides the windows of the updated dbs instead it minimizes them. Anyone seen any similar issues? Thanks

I don't know much more than what the Release says, and a few posts here. Just a few questions, if anybody wants to show how smart they are... How capable is the Web Viewer? (Display basic objects only? Form Capable? Stylesheets? JavaScript or any scripts?) Trying to comprehend what it "views", and if it has any HTML features like hyper-links. On Objects: How in-depth do the Objects go? From that I mean, can we Define Classes, Inherit other Classes/Objects, Override Inherited features, ...? Just how Object Oriented is it? I doubt that our company will get a copy of it for a month or so. Curious as to how much power this all adds.

Going Nuts, Hey everyone, maybe the topguys can come up with a solution. I have a simple database, with a pulldown or popup list ( which ever ) with link values. I need the ability to select a record from that list, and goto the related record in that table. Easy with a go or submit button, but stumped with on exit option. Are event triggers possible? In my old FM 5 I use the change printer plugin from Productive Computing Inc. Its a very good plugin which let me have all printers in a register. If I change printer its only copy the printername and past it in the printer field and it works in all my registers. When I print I only tell the PlugIn that printer 2 should be used. In FM8 I can tell the computer what printer should be used but I cant tell the script picking up a specific printer from a field - I think? Its very hard changing printers name in all scripts in all solutions. The Productive Computing way is much simplier. Do anyone know if this is working in FM8.5? -Per

I need to set up a script that will my client to email photos of paintings to various galleries. The image link is stored in the database and the image can be viewed in the database. I am wondering if it is possible to script attaching a file dynamically in filemaker? I know you can set a specific file but I can't find anything on naming the file to attach dynamically. I wand to be able to view and edit data in a filemaker layout that comes from external FM databases AND remote MySQL databases. I do not want to import/export anything and I do not want to mess with ODBC drivers. I just want to be able to edit data locally and have the changes instantly occur to the remote DBs. I have 2 date fields which appear in Layout and Browse modes, but which disappear in Preview Mode or when I print a page from Browse mode. The fields have data auto-entered in them. They are not the results of any lookups or calcs. Date formatting is irrelevant - I tried it both with leaving the date formatted as entered and with formatting the dates a specific way; neither format previewed or printed. I have recently tried to re-install my FMSA v8 from CD as the v8.3 update caused me some headaches. I have installed from CD FMSA v8.0, then tried to update to v8.2 using the download from the FM site (because that's the earliest available), but it tells me I need a valid version of FMSA v8.1 to install this update. I cannot find a v8.1 update and, after reading the v8.2 update info it suggests that my cd install version should be 8.1? I'm confused, am I missing something? Should my FMSA CD version be 8.1 or should there be an updater somewhere that I can't find?

Comments on new object functions: Make a simple rectangle. name the object. then set the object as a button, the object name no longer shows, naming the rectangle the same name indicates the name is used. resetting the rectangle as do nothing returns the object to its original name. Essentially the original object does not exist, but the name remains reserved. FMS5.5 on Linux. I can see through the remote admin tool plenty of statistics for user connect time and idle time. The FM database controlling this (for presentation at least) seems to be locked. Anyone know of a way to access this data? I have a request to gather the statistics at regular intervals throughout the work day for reporting purposes. Would seem to be real slick if I could export the data along the way.

What we want to do here, is fill in a certain weeknumber of the year x, and then we want FM to return the startingdate and the endingdate of that week. Is this possible in a way?? I have created a relational data base. I am trying to create a script that will delete all the the related records from Table B when I delete a recorded from Table A. I tried to do a find, but it appears that the criteria in “Perform Find” only allows you to hard code an entry. For example, you can use this as the criteria “=2.1” but you cannot use “=$temp“ where $temp is equal to 2.1. Is it the case that I can’t use a variable in the find criteria? How can I do such a find? I admit I am new to FileMaker Pro, so if this is a simple mistake, great. I find it hard to believe you can’t find programically using variables of field data.

Hello, we´ve just bought a 5-licence-Pack of Filemaker Pro 8 and want to install it on a remote server in a way that all 5 users share the same database. It´s a windows 2003 server, our 5 users (each with different windows username / profile) log in on the server via windows remote desktop and work that way directly on the server. I have a FMP 6 solution running on FM Server 5.5 on a Win XP Pro system...one problem i have is speed of displaying calculated results especially useres coming through VPN. I believe this is due to the calculations having to be carried out on the client side. I wonder if this is a bug or some new limitation in fm8 or maybe its just me. I have a script that deletes the "current login/password account user" and creates a new one. It used to work fine with 7 but now i receive a error when the account is created, not enough privileges. Even the custom privledg set i created in my solution allows all. The option"[Full access]" is ghosted in the "Add Account Option" Any ideas whats going on? I think the new account created has the custom privilege and wont allow to create a new account but "[Full access]" is not working, what to do? Hey all, Well, after months of periodic saturdays spent combing my scripts, fields, layouts, buttons, etc etc etc in a converted FMP5 to 8 set of 24 interrelated files, today was the day for the final reconversion of our most current FMP5 files, and final data import into our (hopefully!) fully functional and fixed FMP8 solution! Good bye classic mode, finally. Man, it flies too! I currently integrated several small databases in fmp 6 to one large database that contains several checkboxes. My boss bought fmp 8 advanced and I would like up upgrade but I fear that i will have to go through all 3,000 + files and re-enter the data in the checkboxes by hand, as i did when i integrated the database the first time. I am wondering if anyone else has had the problem of the text cursor appearing to be one or two spaces farther than it evidently is, meaning, that it may look to rest after the "p" in "Aspen," yet when you delete backwards, for example, it will erase the "A." I remember this happening when we updated to FMP 7 but a simple version update fixed the problem. We have had FMP 8 for a while and it is completely updated and evidently this problem began out of the blue, not after any update of any kind. My summary fields are calculating correctly, but when I add a new record they go blank. If I leave the layout and come back to it - they are populated correctly again. What's up? Here are my fields: Debit = a number Credit = a number SDebit = Summary field, sum of Debit (running) SCredit = Summary field, sum of Credit (running) Balance = SCredit - SDebit When I add a new record and put data into the field "Debit", as soon as I hit Tab the SDebit field will go blank. Sorry the subject might be somewhat cryptic there. Is it possible for Fm8Pro (trial) to coexist on the same machine as Fm7 Developer does? I have tried several times to setup Web Services Connector on a machine running Win 2000. I can get to the first logon box but it only asks for a user name for admin. It does not ask for a password and later when I try to change things a box pops up asking for username AND password. Nothing works. I have set clear text passwords on the server. Called Filemaker and they said they don't support FMP 6 anymore. Suggested I upgrade but I have lots of CDML pages and no time to learn XML. Thanks in Advance.

FM8 Advanced will crash at least daily. Sometimes after being idle, sometimes mid job, hard to pin down. I'll get the windows "FM has a problem and needs to close", it does, but doesn't close the process, so I can't restart without going to the task manager and shooting Filemaker Pro Adavnced.exe (Filemaker Pro.exe has closed). Sometimes even after doing so, restarting Filemaker will get me to a too many users warning. Any leads as to what sort of things to look for? Yesterday I updated FM 8 on two machines running Windows XP Pro to v.03. Since then I already experienced 3 instances of the application freezing ("FM not responding" in Windows Task Manager), forcing me to force quit it (and lose recent changes in scripts.) This happened on several different files, and under slightly different circumstances. In one case the feeze occurred when looking at the table structure, in two other cases while editing scripts. Has anybody else experience this annoying and dangerous behavior?

I was involved in updating a legacy FM 6 DB w/ a FM Server 5.5 solution. I believe I was told by FM that you cannot open the files hosted by FM 5.5 w/FM 6 client on the same machine at the same time -- it causes it to crash and creates design corruption; there is usually no data loss. When the update was deployed we intialized the Mac for the server, did all the Mac OSX updates and installed FM 5.5 along with the latest updaters from FM. The design seemed be stable. A new problem has cropped up after converting to FMP 8.03. Instead of properly wrapping, text in a field is overrunning the right border of the field and becoming hidden. This only happens for a word or two, then wrapping continues properly. If I use the arrow key to move thru the text, the cursor hovers at the right edge as I go thru the hidden portion of the text, then moves to the next line. If I hit "Enter", the hidden text jumps to the next line. If I hit backspace, the wrapping fixes itself... until I exit the field. Then, it jumps back up a line and becomes hidden again. Any thoughts?
