Hi Guys I just started on FM so please excuse me if this is too basic or not even possible. I am modifying an existing FM Pro 7 db in FM 10 adv. There are some 50 layouts with similar fields going into the same table. i need to make small modifications to some fields like changing the default color, default font etc. is there a fast way to do it? i was thinking change it in one layout and copy/paste it (would this break any references to tables/scripts that point to it?) but i also had a question in mind that for future purpose can all layouts point to the same object so if i even make a change in one layout, it gets reflected on all layouts? …

Perhaps I'm missing something, but it seems like the developer should be able to set a default page size for each layout. For example, it would be nice to set in the Layout Setup if the layout should be portrait or landscape. As it is, it seems like the user has to set portrait or landscape manually depending on the selected report. This seems nuts when the developer could set configure this when developing the layout. With all the rich features in FMP this just doesn't make sense and when it doesn't make sense it is usually because I am missing something. What am I missing? Thanks

Hello all, I am near completion on what I consider my first "real" FMP application. I pretty much home schooled myself on it - along with the help of many of you here. Thank you. I was wondering if anyone would be willing to look over my fp7 file and see how I approached things and if there are any glaring mistakes I may have made in terms of proper development? Basically this app is a tool where art vendors will submit new images and a spreadsheet that will get imported. It offers a spec view and a list view. You can choose art and create a catalog of the chosen items. Pretty simple in nature - but many of the needed bells and whistles kept me challenged.…

I am trying to build a solution which will contain many layouts, some forms, some lists, some tables. What is the best method for navigating through these layouts. I want to have a number of categories and each category will have a number of layouts associated. i.e. a category of Census would have layouts for 1841, 1851, 1861, 1871 etc. Thanks for any advise you can offer.

I have a form where someone sets its preferences and when hitting enter to save and close the window. Hi, I have a layout that I show records in as a list. I want to be able to show users what line they are on by coloring the background of the record selected (background of the fields a different color). Is there a way of doing this? I know how to use conditional formatting on a per field basis, but in a list, this doesn't help me. Any suggestions? Thanks in advance Constance

hi all, I have a field that contains a description of each record. In my layout, this field is just above a picture. My problem is that some records have longer descriptions than others, and i would like the picture to always be immediately below the last line of text. Is it possible for the field to automatically resize in length according to its contents, and for the picture to move up or down in relation to the bottom of the text field?

I am looking to add a layout that is a month view calendar - able to be clicked to show each month before and after.. ect.. like the normal calendars we all have in Outlook as an example. The calendar would show scheduled events based on records in my "bookings" table. Does anyone have an example of a calendar layout I can look at? Im not quite sure how to approach doing it where it creates the monthy view in a calendar format. I could always have a timeline list, but Id like to try and get it in an actual calendar view.

Hi, Is there a way to visit previous or next layouts as in an internet browser? I'm able to navigate only to the previous layout, but no more than the last one. I guess it could be possible using a global variable that would stack the visited layouts with a cursor. Thanks

Hi all, I'm relatively new to FM, but I'm learning fast. My non-profit org. uses a FM-based database for tracking donor info. I'm trying to create a new layout for printing letters to donors, and my specific problem involves inserting a signature image into the layout. The letter text box includes merge fields for address, etc., and those work perfectly. I want to place a signature image in the layout between the "Sincerely" and the printed signatory name, AND I want everything to slide upward as the length of the merged address blocks varies from letter to letter. I tried breaking the letter body and signatory names into separate text boxes, with the signature …

Hello everyone I'm trying to buid a report to compare litters weights over a period of time. I have created a table with those fields. Now in my report I'd like to see data sorted the way I can do it on an excel sheet. I want a way to evaluate weight growth between litters and by days. There can be 1 to 12 puppies per litter, of course it's never the same. If it's impossible to have 2 litters side by side, at least I'd like to have the puppies (colors) from one litter side by side. Creating a subsummary by date is very easy and printing my records this way is a cinch. What I want to do is offset my 'day' and create a subsummary where the 'day' starts at 6 am and ends at 5:59 am so entries after midnight still print the same day before midnight. Any simple solutions to this one? thanks

Is it possible to control the application window size (FileMaker application window) under Windows? I am developing a form that needs to have multiple lines exactly 10 cm in length; is there a way inside of Filemaker to specify or measure the length of drawn lines?

Is there a way to set printing to fit within the page when it prints. I am missing about 1 inch of data on a specific layout. I dont want to move things to accommodate for the 1 inch to appear. I checked setting and advanced settings and cant find anything.

If I have a square area I want to input text into without it falling off the page but instead to be enclosed by a scroll box what is the best way to accomplish this? I have seen them before but not in any of my samples to see how its done.

wasnt sure where to post this, so I picked layouts... I would like to have a configuration layout where common fields would be set that would be used elsewhere. For example: On config layout, user would fill in the field COMPANY NAME. I would like that field to be a global field that can be used on ony other layout where company name is needed. My problem is - how do I create this config layout to only allow ONE record... meaning users cannot add records and create more configs. How do you get your file to load like an actual application. I have my control bar set and the file complete. I want it to open up like an actual application how is this done?

I am hoping that some one can help. We currently use FM 6 and it was all built and developed on Macs. As the business has grown we have started to get more PC's. As my Mac died it was replaced witha PC. However I now have major problems with Filemaker. Functionality stil works however we have lots of layouts that are basically letters that we print off. If I amend any text on these layout the formating goes wrong for all the mac users. Is there anyway around this and is it a known issue

Hi, Im not sure where to post this...I only use a PC so this may seem like a stupid question. When I download some of the examples here, they have a Mac file attached as well...how is the mac file produced. Can it be done from a PC or do I need a Mac to produce it? Ultimately the data will be pulled live (read-only) via ODBC from the student information system the school uses, but while I develop the book lists I'm just replicating the tables in Filemaker (so I don't need an Internet connection to do my work). hello I would like to make gray some fields in a layout. The reason is to create one layout that can be used in different circumstances. The basic layout is the same but I need to deactivate a checkbox or text filed. Lets say I have a form that has checkboxes. When I press the checkbox "other" I want to active the field near it to write in there. If it is not pressed it will be gray and inaccessible.

Just downloaded FM10 and I would like to use the Business- email pre made template, however the template appears in a dark blue and the tabs are all formatted in the same color, is there a way to change all colors (including the top header rectangle box) without manually changing each box? thank you

Hi all, I presume I would do this with some form of self-join relationship but cannot really get my head around how to go about this. I have a layout with 10 container fields on there. Hi. I'm trying to create a report, but I can't figure out how to do it properly. Let me start with an overview of my db. This is a basic project management db for a small group. There is a users table, which simply sets a user ID based on login. A Projects table and a tasks table. Tasks are a child of Projects. So I can have projects without tasks, but no tasks without a project. Here's my issue, I want to create a report that lists all Projects and its tasks. If I do this by basing the reports off of the child (tasks) any project without tasks doesn't get listed. I also tried creating a report based on the Projects and using a portal to list task…

Is there any type of tool that can identify whether or not a layout is in use? I need to clean up the database and would like to remove unused layouts but not break anything in the process. The DDR provides this type of information for scripts (used in layout, used in script), but not for layouts. Is there an easier way to do this than digging though the database piece by piece?

I know how to make objects transparent but there is no "transparent" setting for text within a field that I am aware of. I would like to have the capability to layer a selection field like ID Number that is formatted to display a drop down list of Names over the field that displays the related names so a user can select from a list of names, change the ID number transparently, then see only the resulting name selected. Folks We have a 75 user site license and are in the process of upgrading those folks to 10 advanced from 9 advanced. The users and I have noticed that list views and portals scroll about 4 times slower in 10 than they do in 9. We have conducted side by side tests. Is this suppose to be this way? The folks aren't happy and I am confused (I am the only one with a Mac and haven't noticed any change between 9 and 10 on that platform) XP Pro sp3

This is my first time using a container field. I have a layout where our technicians enter the results of a certain test, most of the time they enter text but every once in a while they need to show a picture of the result by the text they entered. I'm putting together a Invoice layout. The layout is based on Line Items table. I've got a Description of the line item and the number of Hours spent on it both on a Body part, shown in List view. Below the two fields is a line object. The Description sometimes is too long to fit on one line. I'd like to have the Description text wrap when necessary, but the Hours field (which is always a single line) to always snap to the bottom of the part. I can't figure out how to set up the sliding. Hi, I have a invoice database set up in which I'd like to control whether or not certain objects print through a script. The reason for this is that I either print an invoice onto headed notepaper or export it to pdf. If I'm exporting it to pdf I like it to have the company logo/details included in the pdf but when I print it I want these omitted (as they're already on the notepaper). At the moment I have added the logo/details in a layout and then manually set them to print or not print depending on whether I'm exporting to pdf or printing. Hi How can avoid screen refresh in FM Client, when IWP users make changes at the same time ? My solutions calendar page has a lot of portals. Every time an IWP user changes something in his view, the Client screen refreshes also. Is there a way to avoid that ?

Is there a an upper limit to the number of fields you can have in table view? When I create a new field it doesn't appear in browse mode straight away. I seem to have to drag and drop it in layout mode to a few different locations before it will appear as the extreme right hand field in browse mode. I'm hoping the number of fields I can create in this way is infinite. Any thoughts most welcome.

Hi All. I am working in a Windows environment and I have layout where clicking on a certain field opens a new smaller window for additional input. If the user clicks outside the new window it hides behind the original window. Is there a way to keep the new window on top until it is closed?

My question is, when displaying a columnar report of say, 100 records via IWP, the list is limited to displaying 25 items max for a page. It seems that sometimes, when I navigate to the layout with the subsummary, it will show the sub-summary in browse mode and other times it won't...can somebody explain to me how I get it to show the sub-summaries in browse mode. I have read about ways to achieve a crosstab presentation for calculated fields. But, what about if the body is text? eg, I have a table of the following fields: week ending date city actorname role I want the end result to have the week ending dates going down the left, the roles going across the top, with the actor names in the body. I can achieve this via Excel by using vlookup function on my source data, but I would like to generate it from Filemaker. Sometime... i am coming from developing or working with FM9.. open close etc.. do different functions in my app.. And then I will get this error window usually starting FM9-advance version ...saying 'Other users are running a FM session.. " I can hammer error dialog.. bring up my application and continue on... everything works... until i get into another privilege situation, opening another file, or other places in my app.. Like something is not closed? It only happens sometimes? If i exit back to desktop.. starting FM again, my app says same thing... ONLY if I reboot will it fix it.. I use a certain font type and size as standard throughout my solution. Users have permission to cut and past text from other fields and other sources (eg: web sites, Word documents...) into my solution's fields. I want all the text to look the same. Is there a way to force the field to retain the font characteristics I want despite the formating of the text being pasted in? I tried, via FM preferences, font locking, etc... but without success. The only other way I see as a solution is have have an "Enter" button that is scripted to format the text. As this would entail a lot of extra scripting (for all the fields involved) I would prefer not to do this but if …

I want to duplicate (or copy/paste) an object existing in one layout to many other (similar) layouts but I want that duplicated object to be in exactly the same position on each layout, not 6 pixels down and right as when you duplicate (or copy/paste) an object within the same layout. I created a report for a database that contains 31 records. When I view the report in preview layout, it shows results for only 16 of the records. If I go to the browse layout, I can scroll through the report one record at a time but all 31 records are there. Is there something I can do to make all of the records appear in the report while in the preview layout?

Hello, I remember seeing someone mention this in passing, but I can't seem to find where that was (it might have been on a different site). So, my question is, when you're in list mode, is there a way to hide the little indicator of the current record? I'm using conditional formatting to show the active record and a global field to determine which record to work with, so I feel that the little black bar on the left is distracting and somewhat unprofessional Of course, I could just be displaying my data in a less than ideal way. Hello, I've created a tab field in the records and every time I push "new record", the cursor jumps to the last tab written (they are 3 tabs)...how can I change it so that when I press "new record" the cursor goes to the first tab?

I have a text box that I want to go to and set a variable's value to the value of the text in an edit box. When I step through the code the variable does not retrieve the value and has a '?' when viewed with the data viewer. Also when the goto object code is executed, the value of the text is framed with a dark rectangular box. I created a new text box with all the characteristic of the first text box (that I could think of) and this text box will let me set the variable value to the value of the text box. I'm preparing a custom report, with columns and groups. How do I tell a field that, if the contents of the field doesn't fit in the designated width, that the field should grow in height (ie, take up additional rows). Thank you Marion

I have a number of layouts that you reach via buttons that run scripts to choose records, sort, etc. and then goes to layout. On the layout in browse mode I give the user two buttons (unprintable), one to Print and the other to go back to the menu where they came. I have a report that uses 2 subsummaries and one body line. In browse the report is meaningless. It has to be seen in Preview mode. However, I don't know how to give the user the ability via 2 buttons to either print the report or return to the menu. Is there any way to do this in a preview?

Hello, I created a subsummary report that lists all of my company’s documents broken out by type. Hello I am trying to create a table in Filemaker. To wrap my head around the structure, I set it up in Excel. But I'm not experienced enough with Filemaker to understand how to create the layout, or if it's possible. I know it's the Columnar Report Layout, but I'm all tangled with the sub-totals and what not.... I've attached my Excel file, the cvs data as well as the Filemaker table... I have a user account, call it Designer, that has the privilege to modify all layouts. however, when she is in the Layout mode, Duplicate Layout is grayed out. I have looked everywhere and can't figure where to change this setting. Thanks

Hi, Q1: How would you code a FMP9 drill down UI for layouts that presents a state with the county boundary lines as level one, and county townships and cities as layout level two? The user would drill down from state layout to county layout to a township layout displaying the details. The user would click on the county; click on the township, and view the township detail. Q2: Can FMP 9 present hierarchal lists to users on layouts for selecting items, and presenting related drill down information?

I want to insert a picture into a layout. The layout is a letter with mail merged inside address, etc. The picture is my signature (scanned as a jpeg). I can insert the picture, but it doesn't flow with the layout. In other words, if the mail merged information changes the length of the letter (some people have an inside address of 3, 4 or 5 lines), the signature falls out in the same place on the page no matter what. Is there a way to get the signature to flow inline with the rest of the text?

Hi - first of all, thanks for such prompt, clear support. I've had data in FileMaker for about 6-8 months, since I moved to the Mac, but I haven't worked with it until now. So I'm here with questions. I created two layouts, and I think I didn't deal properly with the sort when I created them. Is it possible to have templates in FM10? Most of my layouts will have a number of common visual features and I'd rather lay these all down in a template which I can then edit, rather than having to make changes to all my layouts every time I want to change something.

Is there any way to do a simple, animated, "Please wait" message in Filemaker? Just the standard spinner device would be great. I've tried using an animated GIF but it doesn't work.

I have designed a till in FM which has a layout containing two portals: one for items bought, the other for payments made. I now want to print this layout (re-themed, of course, but displaying the same information) in preview mode. Sometimes there are so many items in the "items bought" portal that they don't all fit on the screen. I have therefore added a vertical scrollbar to the portal. However, this disappears in preivew mode so I can't see all the records. Is there any way of getting round this problem, so two portals can be displayed in their entirety in preview mode, no matter how big they are?

I've just run across this perplexing problem. On a Windows machine, when tabbing into a pop-up menu field, the pop-up shows with all its options. But, on a OSX machine, the same tabbing will not show the pop-up at all. In fact there is no visual representation that the field is active so pure keyboard entry cannot be used for that field. Is this a bug or am I missing something?

I found some .PNG files that could be used in fm. What's the easiest way to them as buttons. Is there a better way than copying them in and then putting a clear box around is as the real button?

User jumps to a dedicated layout for searching and automatically enters Find mode. Presses a button labelled "Search" which performs the Find and goes into Browse mode. This works fine. Now the client wishes the label on the "Search" button to change its text, depending on the Window Mode — "Search" when in Find mode, "Start Over" when in Browse mode, which would re-initiate going back into Find mode. Excellent idea. Created a Calc field which evaluates the Window Mode and returns the appropriate text. However, when in Find mode all fields go blank. Can anyone think of a workaround? Much appreciated.

Somewhere in the distant part of my brain I recollect a filemaker feature that automatically re-sized layouts to fit screen size of whatever monitor the application was being displayed on. Is this just a movie in my own head or does this option really exist? I do most of my work at home on a 24 inch Imac but the screen I have at my shop is only 20 inches. Is there a way to truncate the screen display when using smaller monitors to eliminate all the scrolling?

Hi there, I set up my database size to 630 x 950 pixels with the Adjust Window (Resize to fit) script. When I run it in a runtime solution, I notice FileMaker frame uses more room on screen that the database itself. What should I do to make FileMaker frame fits my database size? This happens on Windows only.

A few of the scripts in my current FM project move between multiple windows. When this happens, the screen "flashes". Is there a standard way to get round this problem? I have tried setting the size of windows to 0 by 0, by it seems that changing the size of one window stops my main window from being maximized, which is problematic.

I have a single table solution to track feature requests. One of the fields is "Complete". I want to use a checkbox on a layout to allow the user to toggle the value of Complete between true and false or 0 and 1. How do you do this in Filemaker? Thanks!

I have a layout that will automatically get a different heading if it's a July report or if it's an August report. Besides that I have two possible portals that will show up in a subsummary. The july portal if it's a july report or the asugust portal if it's an august report. Any idea how to display the proper portal through my script? I know how to get different headings by passing parameters. I can't figure out how to get different portals.

Displaying the Text Ruler has two unfortunate display side effects in FMP10. 1. The worst, it automatically redraws the screen to go to the default tab. The end user is disconcertingly jumped to some other tab automatically. Since there's a script trigger attached to the tab panel working out a solution is tricky. 2. The Adjust Window Resize to Fit command doesn't take account of the additional depth of the window, now that a ruler is in place. Both problems are cludgy, requiring complex coding to provide the user with expected behaviour. Anyone have comments?

Hi I have a field with a defined value list on two different layouts. One a drop down the other a pop up menu. The values are from the field itself. The values are "batch numbers" so it builds the list 1,2,3 etc. Currently the list sorts 1 through the highest number. I would like it to sort the opposite so the highest number is at the top. I have a strange request of filemaker. i have customers and jobs and several jobs going on at once. I would like to create a form where I could log the day's work in one place. Date of Service Invoice number / Job / Rep (This line would be repeated depending on the jobs done that day) Then each customers invoice would be populated with the data. Would I use several portals? I'm not sure if this is the correct section to post this question, but I couldn't find a better fit (part of being a noob). I am trying to print a MICR check field and need to take the check amount and "merge" that into a fixed layout. For instance, if the check is for $323.95 then the layout would be: 0000032395 I'm able to get the check amount to appear, but I can't figure out how to pad the left most side of the field with zeros (for a total of 10 digits). Any help would be greatly appreciated! :(

Hi, Is it possible to display the value of a Variable into a Layout without storing it into a field? The reason why I ask this is I need to display a person's name on every report on different tables that i have and I thought of storing it into a variable instead of creating a global field which requires to create relationship to that field on every table just to get the person's name. I need to put some info in a text field but it must be formatted as a table, but i don't need to create database tables for this info, is just a matter of showing it in a given order. Example: Suppose is a database of a girls club. the important information is about members, but they can add personal food recipes in a text field. We have a text field that we need to auto size on a layout by the amount of text in the field. Is this possible in Filemaker? Currently some of the data is being cut off and we don't want a large empty space in the middle of the document if there is no data.

Hi I have a field on my layout that has the control style "checkbox set" with a value list "1". The field is mapped to a text field in the database. When the checkbox is "ticked", I notice the value in the field in the table (looking at it from another layout where the control style is edit box), I noticed the value is a space, followed by a return char then 1. Looks like this: " 1" (without the quotes of course) Why is that? I was expecting a "1" only if ticked an "" if unticked.

does anyone know how to turn this off - many of my apps use paging to trigger other events or calculations - use of the scroll wheel will defeat these functions. i also think this feature increases user error when they inadvertently page to another record.

I am trying to keep the Status Area hidden from the user. Is there a way to change 'Include' to 'Omit' in the hidden Status Area from a script?

The idea is simple - I have a portal which has three rows of fields on each portal row. Thus, I cannot add header labels to indicate what each field does, unless I add three rows of labels on top of the portal (ugly!). Thus, my question: can greyed text be shown on each field, with a description of what the user is expected to enter? Eg. you could see: [color:#AAAAAA]Type your username here Which is cleared when the user enters the field. This is used in may applications and websites, so it's not an uncommon UI feature.
