Okay, I must ask because I had spent a hundred hours searching for the answer to this, over my 6 years using FM. And a friend pointed, clicked and showed me in 1 second. But it is NOT anywhere in FileMaker Help that I can find. Does anyone know where there is a reference to this functionality? I've struggled with the body tab being over the layout where I want to place a field. I had seen some people's files where the body went up the side vertically instead of horizontally (same with all parts). I was shown that the little box on the status bar (while in layout mode) that looks like a very tiny tab on a layout actually toggles where the part labels reside. I …

I have 2 layouts (layout 1 and layout 2 for these purposes) that have the same field information from the same table within them but everytime I create a new record for layout 1 it will create a record for layout 2. I do not want this to happen, I only want layout 2 when I select a new record for layout 2. Do I need to create a new table of fields for layout 2 or is their an easier way around this? A lot of the fields for layout 1 are common in layout 2, can a table with all the fields be copied and renamed as a new table or do they need to be recreated? Thanks!

Trouble deciding which forum to put this in, so moderator feel free to move it. When I click and release the left mouse button on a button in the database, no action happens until I move the mouse away from the button. This same thing happens when I am designing a layout. I can't move a field or label if the mouse cursor is resting on it. I have to click, release, and move the cursor in order for any action to take place. This only happens on my laptop. Any clues?

I'm trying to identify duplicate URLs (for thumbnail images) in a database, in order to identify "stand-in" images that should not be shown (for example, many merchants have a standard image that says "image not available" which is silly for me to display). I've defined a summary field called "count_of_thumb" and I've tried creating new layouts several different ways, but all I ever end up with is either all 1's or all values the same (being the count of all records, I'm not sure if it's all records with a value in the field or a count of unique valies). This has me very confused. I am trying to put together a report. In a subsummary there is a calculation field. The calculation is based on two summary fields. Basically s_TotalEarned - s_TotalUsed. In the sub-summary where I seperate by people I also display these two fields and they look fine. But the calculation field shows data that is s_TotalEarned - s_TotalUsed(but for everyone in the query). These records keep track of how much is used. The amount earned is calculated elsewhere, so I cannot do the subtraction in each records then summarize that field. Does anyone know a way around this?

I have a list layout. If you click on a line item ID field, I've got a New Window popping up with further details on the line item (the list only shows a small amount of data). Now the tricky part: to close the pop-up window, the user has to click the Close button on the window top (coming from the OS GUI, be it OS X or Win). Is there a way to script it so you can just hit Esc on the keyboard and make it go away? As always, many thanks, people.

I have a project that requires one layout of data to be printed in landscape and on legal 14" paper. All other forms for the same project/application are in portrait style 8.5 x 11 paper. It seems that there can be an "overall" setting of landscape OR portait but not a specific format for each individual layout ... I am new at Filemaker Pro 10, and I wanted to know, in the layout, is there a way to only allow entry into a field based on the value in another field? For example, let's say I have a field called "Individual or Company". The possible values are chosen from a value list and they are Individual and Company. If the selection is company, I want the user to be able to enter data in the Company Name field. I don't care if this is via a pop-up entry request window (not sure if this is possible), or if a new field can appear on the layout. Hi, I have 2 tables Products and Delivery Both have the columns ProductID and Product type. The relative data exists in both tables. Exp Products table ProductID ProductType P001 LowEnd P002 Medium Delivery Table ProductID ProductType P001 LowEnd P002 Medium Both the tables are in different Database. We have recently moved from FM5.5 to FM9 on many of the PCs in our school but there are still many PCs and many databases which have not been update/converted. As a result we are having to maintain FM5.5 databases on PCs which have both FM9 and FM5.5 installed. There are no problems except that... In FM5.5, every time we create a new layout we get "Filemaker Pro.exe has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience." A new blank layout is the only one which works. Thanks.

I'm working in FileMaker Pro 7 on Mac. My goal is to print labels of my database. I choose layout mode, then "new/layout report", then records from my correct database, then "labels", then I specify label contents. After this, I look in preview mode of FileMaker and all of my labels look great. However, in preview mode when I go to print, only the first label is displayed. Consequently, only the first label of my database is printed. I've created labels taking these exact steps with other FileMaker Pro contact databases of mine, but with this database I have had no success and I don't understand why. Hello. Two FM9 questions here: 1) I want a couple of fields to default to title capitalization, yet to be able to override this default on a per-record basis. That is, usually have text formatted by title capitalization, except to be able to change it when inappropriate--such as when Roman numerals are used: Henry VIII not Henry Viii It seems that I can only toggle the control in the Text.. dialog on a database-wide basis. 2) Is there a way to change the appearance of checkboxes--specifically, to make them larger?

I am helping someone create mailing labels from what I think is a predefined FileMaker Pro 9 database called Contact Management. (Someone else - who is gone - set up the database and entered the data.) There are fields for both Home and Work addresses. There is a section labeled "Preferred mailing address." Under this label are two boxes - one for Home and one for Work, with the check mark appearing in the preferred mailing address. I have a database that is tracking our server backup jobs. I am working with FMP 10 but the database is served on FM SErver 9.0.3. I have a layout that I have created 2 sub summaries that print above the records. The first sub summary is based on ServerName and the second sub summary is based on CheckBackupJob. There are 3 different value possiblities for the CheckBackupJobOn field (ServerConsole, BackupExec, DHOps). The backup job details is in the body. I designed an essay layout report in form view that consists of ten questions, with answer fields below each question. These text fields are formatted with a scrollbar to accommodate extended amounts of text.The entire report fits on one page in browse mode as formatted. I want to print this report and have the answer fields expand appropriately, depending on the amount of text entered for each question. The printed report could end up with one page or ten pages, depending on the length of each answer. Can anyone explain to me why the fonts being displayed in my pop-up and drop-down value lists are different? The drop-down list provides a nice clean font, whilst using a pop-up for the same list provides a scrunched up font - barely readable. The attached screen shots show the problem.

Hello, Is there any way to have record data pulled into a crosstab summary based on month. I can get numerical data to flow, but not text fields associated with that number. I am trying to make an media schedule for ad buying. The structure of the report is seen in the attachment. Hi everyone, I have a report in Filemaker that utilizes sub-summaries and portals. It's set up exactly as I want it, but someone needs it exported as an Excel spreadsheet. However, when I try to export the individual fields to Excel (specifically the field I had set up a portal for), the sorting and ordering of the data I have in my report is lost. Is there a simple way to export my report to Excel so that it looks exactly the same as the report in FM? Thanks!

I would like my Purchase order layout to work similar to the way quickbooks works. i.e. You type a few characters of the part number in the appropriate line item field and then a few matching part numbers are displayed in the dropdown menu. When you select the part number the rest of the fields are filled in by lookup. Is there a way to implement this kind of functionality in filemaker? Right now I have a popup selection routine where the user performs a find and selects the appropriate part. It works but it takes time if there are a lot of line items.

Hi, Me again. Another prpoblem I'm having between my iMac development vs. PC laptop deployment is that the colors on the PC are looking significantly different. For instance, all the shades of grey represented on the left-most column of colors in the 'fill' palette come out looking some degree of *lavender* on this PC, which spoils the whole look of the thing! Other colors are also significantly different. Is this known as a standard difference between the way Mac and PC colors work, or is it more likely to be a matter of this particular laptop being oddly calibrated? I know this can be done. I just can't find in the manual the right words to find it. I have an invoice layout with links to a contact table & a calculation table. All I want is that when the invoice is finished, I can block the entry so that if the contact info or calculations change, they do not change automatically the invoice I have created. I've looked through previous posts, found one that addresses this question but no good answer. I have some horizontal buttons across the top of my layouts that I would like to "freeze" in position as the user scrolls up and down (multi-page layouts). Don't want switch from Form view to List view. I only want the user viewing a single record at a time... has anyone else found a "work-around" to accomplish this? Thanks!

Hi Everyone, I've been working with FMP 9 for a few months now but have run into a problem. I am putting together a report (layout: invoice statement in the attached files). I have two test invoices and when viewed in browse mode, I can scroll through the invoice lines and the various attributes change correctly. However, when I view the invoice in preview mode, all invoice lines are shown (not separated by invoice number). I`m trying to change the distance between fields in one go. Creating a new table filemaker displays all the fields within that table on a new layout with a certain distance between the fields. I would like to change these distances all at once or be able to determine the distance between fields before filemaker creates the layout. I am trying to limit entries into a master activity field to only those entries inserted via a script which attaches a date. That part works fine. I then locked the field so the user cannot modify in browse mode. I've just realized that by locking out the user they can no longer use the scroll bar to move through the body of the text. Most of these field contain a large amount of data so scrolling is crucial. Any thoughts on how to have it both ways? Thanks for your help.

Hi, I have built a database for an auction. On the main page of the auction I have button to drive various reports for bidders, donors, etc. On that main page I also want to display the current total of all revenues. I have a table built to capture the revenues of all items and fees entered so far, based on a summary report. I can correctly total all items in the report itself, but when I add the summary field to the main page it doesn't calculate correctly. Hi, In my design process, ive realized that i want to have the same basic buttons and fields across all my layouts. (or many at least) However, i also know that i will want to change names etc as time goes on. Is their a way to create a layout on which all the other layouts (as requested) are built upon. Or, better put, can i include a layout on another. This way, if i want to updated a button or filed, i can just change it on one layout and all to which it is called will update. (i guess it would be like an include function in php, calling a menu from a single file into multiple pages) Anyway, any ideas on the idea would be great.

I think I wrote that poorly in the Subject. My goal is to display a field's content formatted differently from how it was actually entered. Specifically, I want to remove all commas and replace them with carriage returns. But this would NOT be a permanent record change by using Find/Replace. It would ideally just be as the field is displayed in a given layout. Right now I've got fields with long strings of words separated by commas. It's hard to read. Carriage returns would make it easier in this case. Is this doable?

Thanks for looking at my question. I'm new to FileMaker, having been in other environments since the mid '80s. We have a need to make a report that shows somewhat complex engineering data. We have the data in a table that is keyed by QuoteID and DataTag and DataTagSequence. The QuoteID would be related to other tables. The DataTag identifies the a particular piece of data (like a field name). The DataTagSequence allows for the nature of the data - unpredicatable number of entries in any particular DataTag. I am building a database based on the FMP 8 template Task Management. In that template there is a script that creates a Project List using Sub-summary parts . . . which I don't fully understand. It lists the Project, then the Task, then the person or persons assigned to the task (see screenshots). I would like to create a similar report which shows only the records being browsed. Hi all I have a database which keeps track of customers and inventory. I am trying to change it so when a staff member logs in to the database, it automatically takes them to the layout they typically work on. Such as, when "Cindy" logs in she is automatically taken to the inventory layout because she works in that department, but when "Mike" logs in he is automatically taken to the customers layout, and so on. I imagine it is a start up script you would run that is some how tied in with accounts/privileges but I have no idea where to start with a script like this. Any ideas? Thanks

I've gotten pretty confident about data modeling with related tables and using join-tables for many-to-many relationships, but I'm finding myself rther fuzzy at how I can then present the related data in a record print-out. For instance, let's say I have a table for Paintings. The curator needs to keep track of various Actions performed on each painting (Conservation, Loan, Valuation, etc.), so I have created a simple related table to hold these events. Now I can make nice reports at year's end that, say, list all the paintings Loaned in 2008. I have several layouts in which data is entered. I then have a layout with tabs that summarizes all the data. Is there a way to not allow entry into the field (on this data summary screen) but still have the scroll bars in an individual field? In the search pages of my database layouts, I have a button button set up to perform the find and take me to the search results on a different layout (in list form). What I'd like to do is, on the results layout, is to show what was searched for. example: Using merge fields, I currently display "found xx of xx records." Been reading the forums, learning a lot! But have not been able to figure out how to show a filtered view of records in a layout. I have a product table with a sale type field that can have either 'Software' or 'Hardware' for each product. I want to create two layouts, one showing only software and one showing hardware. A script to run a find to filter for only software when the user opens the layout works but when the user performs a find on the layout it undos the filter. This might not be the correct section for this post, but since I am now working on my layouts... I have a single table of Companies. Fields include Name, Address, Phone, etc., and a Category field. The Categories are set from a custom value list (Manufactures, Suppliers, Agencies, etc.) In a basic layout I can view all records and page thru them. I would like to set up tabs, based on the Categories, and view the same info, but restricted to the particular Category. Is there a way to do this with a single table?

I have a data entry screen for entering expenses. Is there a way of filling in subsequent fields depending on the first entry? The first entry is into a free text field (although it's supplemented by a drop down menu as many entries are the same.) I want something that looks to see whether an entry has been made before and matches the other fields if it finds it. If it doesn't then it shouldn't fill it. Linked to this, is there a way of running a script upon exiting a field? I know how to run one upon entering the field but can't work out how to do it upon exit. Thanks John

Hi - I do my Filemaker developing on a Mac but am doing a project for a person to use on a PC laptop. I've done some reading about differences in behavior on the two platforms but am finding that while my layout transitions on my Mac are rock-steady, we get a massive "flashing" of the whole screen on the PC. It doesn't seem to me that my layout is so larded with graphics that there shoudl be a problem. I'm developing a simple project management database. Each Project has a tab for Related Project Files. I've created multiple container fields for the files and would like to associate a time stamp with each file/container field. However, my time stamp fields all reflect the same time even though each field is uniquely named. I'm guessing I can only have one time stamp field per record?? Is there a better way to accomplish my objective?

Is it possible to remove the 3 icons that control a window - "Minimise - Maximise - Close" I have users that close windows by clicking the X icon and not the icon I have provided which does validation and other functions. They are making a total mess of the data and is becoming a nightmare to maintain. I have asked them to use only the icons I have given them but this only lasts a short time. I know in other DB's like 4D you can specify the type of window you want to use, but I can't find any for FM Thanks in advance.

A timestamp field is formatted to auto insert creation (date and time). The field is also formatted to show dates in the format of 14Dec2008 4:26PM. Older records show both date and time. Newer show only the date. Yet when I switch to a table layout the field shows both date and time. Therefore I know the time data is there. What's going on? How can I get the time to show again on the primary layout. Assistance appreciated.

I've created a new layout. If I try to exit the program (File exit, or click the X) FM displays the message "This operation could not be completed because the target is not part of a related table". When I click ok, the program closes. This does not happen on any other layout.

Instead of tabs, I want to use a "phrase" of merged fields, devided by a fixed space (set in a space field). The problem is of course that the words in the "phrase" will change its position, due to variable lengths of the words. My wish is to be able to create buttons over these words, but how to make these buttons (or relative coordinates) to move with the position of the words? I've been thinking of making a row of buttons. Than when activating one of these, the script first calculates which word is under it before executing the script belonging to that word. But this sounds like a horrible amount of variables. Somebody have a suggestion for an easier sol…

I have a client DB (senior daycare) and I need a way to do assessments on each client for each day they attend the activity center. Edit: Changed title. Overall question is - can I get text with standard line spacing into a field that has custom line spacing, with that section of text retaining standard line spacing? I've inherited a project created in FM 5.5. The main database has an established relationship with another file that contains a list of surnames, given names, middle initials and addresses. In the main database the user enters the surname and the remainder of the information auto-enters. The problem I've found is in instances where there are persons with the same surname, e.g.Smith, Adam and Smith, Zach. A user wants the information on Zach Smith but upon entering Smith the information auto-entered from the relationship is that of Adam. It's been about 6 years since I last worked with FM. Hello, I'm working on a chinese-french dictionary application in FMP Advanced 9. The translation on chinese requires formatting of french text also in italics an bold. Done on MacOS (10.5), everything is fine. When I open the application in Windows (XP), the correct formating is retained only for the basic style of a font, all italics or bold is definitely lost, and moreover there is no way of reapplying styles (e.g. Font-Italic, Font-Bold etc.). Is this a known bug or is there a way to retain the formatting while going cross-platform? Thanks for any help or ideas.

Now I am running into a similar problem, but require all records from multiple portals to show up in an 'invoice-type' layout. I wonder if someone might be able to point me in the right direction. I have a database where the main data is in one table which stores timecard information. It’s linked to several other tables but that probably isn’t too relevant. I designed it to enter and view data at line item level i.e individual days and the interface that I have for that works well showing a week at time at day level. Hi there all, In a payroll table, each record is a shift worked. Earnings = pay rate * hrs worked. I have a sub-total (Gross Wages Due) appearing in a sub-summary part which is a total of Earnings. Next to it I want to use a calculation to show the tax due on Gross Wages. The tax must be calculated on the Gross wages, it cannot be calculated on each record's Earnings then shown as a sub-total itself. Is this possible because putting the Summary field in a calc to work out tax due doesn't work? Hope that made sense?

Hi Gang, I am working on a new system where part of the out put will include letters generated from inside the system. I need to have the abililty to have the letter show text in normal, bold, and italics. Can I code into the calculation a set of HTML commands that would allow this to happen? The letter is already working perfectly in all other respects, but the customers wants the output to match their current documents that are created in MS Word. There is nothing real fancy here. I have been running some spellchecks on my largest database. Since it is quite specialised I have added many words to the User Dictionary. Today I am trying to add words in the usual way by pressing the 'Learn' button in the spellcheck dialog box and I'm getting a "Cannot add word to User Dictionary" error box. Is it full? I'm trying to simply copy a field's entry to the clipboard. I've tried a bunch of different ways, but none of them work because the field who's contents I want to copy are not displayed on my layout! I've got a calculation field set up which calculates a filename (to be pasted by the user) based on the entries in two name fields and an ID field. This calculated field does not show on my layout. The calculation works fine - the entry it's calculating is correct. I've set up a simple script to copy the contents of this field, but it only works if that field is showing on the layout. Greetings, I have a table with a number of fields, some with text calculations that can be appended with user input. If the user cuts and pastes from, oh let's say a webpage with a different font, the new font and it's size are pasted in the field.
