    Hi Folks! I've been using FileMaker for, well, decades. However, most of my creations have been simple flat databases.     I can't figure this one out easily... I have a repeating field, say it's for people's names and has 5 repetitions. I want to display them on a layout as a Merge Field... My question has to do with commas, and periods... If I type: <>, <>, <>, <>, <>. This method will work, but if I only had two names entered in the original field, it would look like this: John Smith, Jane Doe,,,. My question is how to I get it to display the correct grammar, so to speak. I don't know if there's an easy way or if some sort of calculations need to be devised. Any help or suggestions or demos?     Hi All, I have a layout that allows a user to select the invoices they want to pay, this layout also has a running total, with a restart after each change in the vendor name - telling them the total amount due for all invoices for a given vendor. What I want is to set the final amoount to a BOLD font or just display the summary over the vendor and not the running total - any ideas?

    Lables have attached themselves to the tabs of the tab control and everytime I try click them in layout mode to delete them the tab control changes to the page to the one I clicked.How do I delete these lables? How they got stuck: I have a layout with lables and fields on the top 3rd of the page and a Tab control on the bottom. I dragged the tab control to high (over the fields and lables at the top)and when I moved the tab control back down all the lables on top stuck to the tab control??? Does this always happen in FM?     Just a quick question on container color. I had a container red to match the background then changed the background to yellow and changed the container color again to match it. But now when I click the container (it goes to a related record) the container goes to the old color when it clicked....it's not a huge deal just annoying. thanks for any sugestions!

  12. I have been working with 3 different databases to develop different parts of a larger combined database. A) . How can I move scripts from database from DB # 1 and #2 into the the bigger database #3? :. How can I move existing Layouts from #1 and #2 into the bigger database #3? I realize that i will have to relink the fields to the new database but i was wondering if there was a way to pull them over so idid not have to rebuild the layouts from scratch.

    On my estimate/invoice page that list all past and current estimates, the company name 2 line get cut off -- curious how I fix that? Also, on this page, it's sorting by invoice number. I changed it to sort by date, but that wont stick. I've examined this is layout view, and there does not seem to be a lot of flexibitly or room to move any fields there. (I'm a bit novice) thanks!

    I have a layout with header, body, trailing grand summary, and footer. The body has 6 fields, it is not showing all the records it should. I get just one record. I thought I had a relationship issue but I put a portal in the header and it shows all of the records correctly. I am also using sliding/printing so I can print this list view out. Any thoughts why list view gives me just one record but portal shows all the records? I am scrolling and the header and footer stays put. Printing provides the same results.

    Hello, I would like to print mailing labels for a simple table that includes addresses. However, some records should receive the mailing and some should not. I have created a field with a yes/no radio button that lets me know whether someone should receive the mailing or not.   16. Hello Sometimes when I copy text from somewhere else. It is too big and maybe bright yellow text. I can go to the format window and select the text and change it all to 10 point arial black . But is there a way to automatically do this. Thanks Dave

    Here's another example of a larger species of a problem that keeps coming up: I don't quite 'get' how Filemaker prioritizes and applies text formatting. here I have a simple text box for "Title" - set for black 14 pt. Times. Simple enough.     I am generating a PDF from records in the found set. My layout has header, body, and footer parts. The page size is 11" x 15" with .5" margins on all sides. (Custom page size) The header is 1", the footer is .5"; both containing text. Is there a way to have the body records equally spaced, with a rule above and below, to fill the 12.5" available space?     I have a purchase order report that the user can print. Right now the report just shows grand totals at the bottom of the last page. This works nicely if there are only a few line items and the report can print on one page. However if the report spans multiple pages it would be nice to have a subtotal of each page at the bottom. Is there a way to put a subtotal at the bottom of each page of a report?

    I have a layout I copied that when you view in browse or preview, the related (detail) records show the same records for every row. For example, say there are 10 detail rows for the main header row (linked in a relationship). Instead of showing 10 rows, one per detail line, i get 10 rows of the first detail line.     I am trying to create a report that has the fields from a record from one database and then selected fields from another database in the body. Actually in the header, I am describing a situation and in the body the individuals from another database to document their responses to the situation that is listed in the header. The two files are not related. Bottom line, I want to document the situation with a description, date, etc. and then print a listing of the situation and a list of the individuals with phone numbers, etc. so I can call them apprise them of the situation. So far I haven't figured out how to do this. Anyone have any ideas?

    I'm trying to add a summary or sub-summary (not sure which is appropriate) to a report. I want the sub summary to show a count of different items selected in a drop down list box. What I've tried to do is create a summary field of the drop down list which is a "count of" the field I want to summarize. Then place that summary field in the sub summary layout part. But when I view the report it's just giving me a count of all records in the found set instead of showing me the breakdown.     I am a novice trying to get on my feet. I would like to build a history db for screen only with a list of events on the right (two fields: year and fact). No brain killer... On the left, however, when an event is clicked on the right, I would like that a description of the chosen fact appear like a large note. I could do this, one above the other: the fact description in the header and the list of events in the body. But I would prefer a screen presentation, horizontal, with a list on one side and the description (the whole card in fact) on the other side. Is this possible with FileMaker?

    I am trying to design a layout that will involve billing specific companies on a daily basis for a period of a month at a time. I would like to be able to open a specific company record and have all the dates for one month show up on my layout so that I can add to the billing field each day. I do not want to have to create a new record for each specific day. In other words,for example, I would like to see every day in November show up in a record so that I may place a billing amount next to that day, without having to create a totally new record for each day.     I have a problem with a field maintaining the font size. I have a layout (sales) where I input address information, and the fields are all font size 12. On another layout (label), I have fields that are size 10, as I am printing labels. I can't make the label layout keep the font size 10 - most of the time the font size stays at 12. This usually is due to me pasting information into the fields that are font size 12. Is there a way to tell the field to maintain the font size that I want the layout to have?   40. I have to produce a report where the client's main logo is on the first page of a (potentially) 3 page standard letter layout for a range of found records. The logo I have placed in a Sub Summary (Leading) part, breaking by ContactID. This ensures that the logo appears at the top of the front page of each Contact's letter. Unfortunately if the letter contents span two or three pages I need subsequent pages of each contact's letter to show a "continuation" logo which differs from the main logo on the first page. When moving fields in layout mode, there is a noticeble delay and lag time when dragging and dropping, making it very difficult to place fileds accurately in their place. My computer is not running slow in other prgrams, including older version of Filemaker which is working perfectly in Layout mode. Any ideas?

    I am in the middle of redesigning my DB in to a separation model. So I made a table only DB and a GUI DB. I imported all my tables from my combined APP in to the new table DB. I then imported all my records. I have 22,500 companies, 18,500 contacts, 9,000 emails. The rest of the 45 tables have varying records from 0 - 500.     Can I import data from excel directly into a particular part of a repeating field. Example, a rainfall field defined as a repeating field with 365 repetitions. I want to import the 3rd days rainfall into the third part of the rainfall field, the 4th days rainfall into the 4th part of rainfall field and so on. Is this possible.     Hello - I have a 4 col layout with a sub-summary part. If the body part goes beyond the bottom of the column it finishes at the top of the next column as you would expect. However, I would like the Sub-Summary part to repeat at the top of the column when it splits the body part. Is there a relatively easy way to do this that I am overlooking? The database I set up is for recording work orders for our editors and assistant editors.     FYI, this is my first post. Is it possible (using sliding perhaps) to have columns and their labels hide when the value of their summary is 0? Or even a way for the user to select columns to hide? I have hidden fields by sliding left but I have not been able to stop resizing of fields since this will put the field out of alignment with other fields set as part of that column. It's also nice, though not essential, to use center alignment. There may be some conditional formatting that does this but I can't find the correct option.     I am working on making a database for events that we get invited to. Some of them only happen once for one date, others are 3 or 4 days in a row, while others are all the weekends in october. What is the best way to store this if someone wants to go in and put in a date or date range and find out all of the events that are happening for those dates. Now that I am typing this I am thinking that the date and time should be in its own table? While the other event information is in anohter table. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

    I am currently trying to edit the tabs when using the Event Management Template. When I enter layout mode, and double click the tab, I am able to get into the Tab Control Setup, but all the options are greyed out except for cancel. Is there any way to either, edit the tabs that come in the template or delete the original tabs once I have copied them? (since I am able to edit the copies) Is there a button that needs to be checked/unchecked?

    I will be having an installation in a non-US (non-$) country. Is there any way to set the currency symbol for a given runtime solution? Is there a value list of currency symbols in RM to choose from? I see that in formatting a number you can specify the currency symbol, but short of finding all the currency fields on all the layouts and changing them one by one for this one (for now) application, I don't know how to change that. And I'm not sure the standard character set would have a lot of the symbols. And then I would be managing two source versions for any updates. Not a pretty picture. TIA

In Excel If I have a row, it will adjust to the maximum height of any one cell in the row.   59. I have a table that needs to have graphics inserted into container fields, but the graphics are from the Corel Draw Graphics Suite Application. The extension on the graphics are all .cdr and filemaker says it does not recognize the picture. Will I need to convert the pictures to a .jpg or .gif? I am trying to create a start page with 'buttons' and the idea is that each button will link to another file. Ideally I would like to run that independent file inside a frame of some sort so it seems like it is still part of the same file and so it makes it easier to return to the start page.     Hello, I have a "text" field on my report that extends four page lengths. If the text entered fits one page, I only want one page to print, instead I get all four pages no matter how much text is entered into this field. I have done this in FM4.0, I thought I was doing it right in FM 7.0. I selected the involved text field,and selected the following; "format," "sliding/printing," "sliding up based on all above," "also reduce the size of the enclosing part." When I view the layout in layout mode, I do not see the arrows pointing up, which identify the field as sliding-up. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Steve

    Hi everyone, I have a report using two subsummary parts for name and job. The report should summarize each name and the job should summarize totals for the jobs associated with that name. The problem I have is the parts breaking across page boundaries. The button is unclicked (allow part to break across page boundaries) so the name doesn't and the jobs don't, but I do get a name at the bottom of a page and the associated jobs at the top of the next. Is there a way to keep both subsummary parts together on the same page? I cannot pick an arbitray number of occurences because the number of jobs varies too much.     Is there a way to create standard headers and footers (one for portrait and one for landscape) to be used on almost ALL layouts without having to copy and paste it on all of them? If I create an header and "group" all objects together and copy/paste it on all layouts THEN if I do change something on one layout, I'll have to change it on all layouts... and there is quite a lot of layouts in our systems. The portal approach seems interesting but maybe there's another specific way to do so. I'm still stuck with FM 7. Thanks I still concider myself n00b :

    hi. i'm using FM for the first time on my mac. i'm a musician trying to create a database of local schools so i can do a personalized mailout. i want to choose whether the script is sent either to the head teacher or the music co-ordinator (and occasionally letters to both). can i have the two contacts in one school file, and then select which one i want to use for the mailout by editing the layout? or do i have to create a separate related file for additional contacts? i have read the manual, but being a musician, it's little technical. many thanks!

    Sorry if this is a very newbie question, but I've been looking everywhere for the answer but have yet to find it. I have text field with varying data length. I would like a layout report to print all of the text in the field. In Access there was a "grow" function that allows the text to expand down the page if there is too much (rather than disappear). Is there a filemaker function that will do this for a particular field as well?

    Hello all, I created a columnar list report layout. Now, what I want to show the user is the total number of pages. In the footer, I have a page number symbol with the word "Page" in it. When I click preview mode, it reads Page 1. The report is actually 3 pages long. I want it to say: Page 1 of 3. How can I get it to show me the total number of pages in this report?

  75. I've got a Class Registration database. Tables Students Classes Registrations Payments Registrations is a join between Students and Classes and a one-to-many with Payments. I'm trying to create a balance sheet for a class that will show all the Payments made towards a Class, sorted by Student with a summary of those Payments. Right now, I've got a layout based on Payments. I GTRR from Class to Registrations to Payments and sort by student name. The total is in a summary field showing amount paid. That's almost fine.     One part of work involves filing out forms with calculations. Is there a way in import an image of the form, so I can put my fields on top of it, and print the page as a whole with the form and the fields together, rather than having to load the printer with a xerox of the form, and adjusting my fields to fit that pre-printed form?     This layout displays fine in FMP 8.0v3 / Mac OS X 10.4, but not on Win2K. I'm just attaching a screen capture in the hopes that the problem will be familiar to someone. Will provide pixel-precision details if needed. It appears to be somehow related to the calculated container field that lies behind the text ("Cash"), which turns green to denote the current sort column. But I have tried shrinking that field drastically, as a debugging measure, and there is still about 1-1/2 cells-worth of graphic plastered over the footer of my layout. Thanks, Chap

    Just trying to copy a few buttons with some text and pasting it a different layout, but it takes over a minute to do the actual paste. In fact I am receiving a paste progress bar while I am waiting. Is thing new in 9? There are no graphics involved, and no conditional formatting...just four squares and four text fields that have scripts attached. This is a remote file that I am working on. Thanks.

    Is there a way to change the caption on a button? I would like to be able to copy a button, paste a bunch of copies of it, change the action they perform, and then change their captions. It's faster than making different buttons and trying to resize them all to the same size. I know there's probably an easy way to do this but I just haven't been able to figure it out.

  85. Hi, I have Advanced 8.5 installed on an intel iMac running 10.4.10. In layout mode, holding 'option' and dragging/dropping an element does not duplicate the element. Also, holding 'command' while dragging or multi-clicking does not allow multiple selection. Option and command keys seem 'broken' in layout mode, but work fine in other modes. There is nothing special set in System Prefs > Keyboard & Mouse. I have tried deleting the FMPro prefs without success. Option & command keys work fine in all other contexts and applications. Does anyone know what is causing this? Thanks, ft.

    I either read or heard (on a video) that you can paint multiple fields or labels by clicking on the paint icon and then holding the Crtl key down and bringing the cursor across the fields/labels you wish to format. Obviously I am wrong, because it doesn't work for me. How do you accomplish this? I am redoing all my layouts to a softer look and it requires painting 100's of labels and fields. For the purposes of scoring them, I would like to be able to hit T or F (or 1 or 2) and then have the cursor automatically advance to the next item (i.e., field) without having to hit another key (i.e., tab or enter).     Have a small Filemaker DB I made for a local club, nothing special, ID, Name, Address ect. They would like it setup so that a member can just enter their ID and Filemaker will keep a record of attendences, Name, Date, Time. What would be the correct way to setup Filemaker? Should I create a new layout with Name, Date & Time fields and have FM create a new record each time someone enters their ID or is there some way to create a list of attendences without FM creating a new record for each?     hi, I'm trying to input hebrew into a field. except for that the marker is staying at the begining of the line all the time, when I try to use anything else besides letters and numbers, it is showing it at the begining of the line unless I print a letter afterwards. For example if I try to end a sentence with "." then I would get "דוגמא." For those of you who don't read hebrew, the dot should be on the other side, and yes, the fields are alligned to the right. Any suggestions?

    I am investigating how to design my printing page layout to mimic security paper (nothing seen on the printed page but "VOID" or other symbol when the page is copies). Under the magnifying glass security paper and background hash marks in one direction and "VOID" written with hash marks in another direction but the same gray as the background.     I am helping a friend with a small business. I have created a basic, single table, membership application but it needs to be modified periodically. It is not convenient for me to make the modifications on the "production" database. What I would like to do is get a copy of the "production" FileMaker database, make the modifications and then import only my non-data changes (layouts, scripts, etc.) back into the "production" database. I know I can import scripts, but what about layouts or schema changes? In other words, is there a way (without using FileMaker Pro Advanced) to perform normal developer enhancement functions?

    I have to make a report where I need text in the header, showing on every page. No problem. In list view the records can go from 15 to 360+. I need text in a 'footer' part, but only showing on the last page (page setup is legal - landscape). The help file says: Title Footer: Appears only once at the bottom of the first screen or page.... I need it on the last page... I have now: layout in list view, Header with text and no fields. Body: fields from record (title) Footer: only text, but has to show up on the last page only..
