Hi I have been searching all over the net on how to do this and I am getting some info but I cannot piece things together. I am trying to filter one of my portals to summarize data based on a radiobutton set. The portal is displaying info from the table "Visits". Each record has a format set to it either as "Lab", "HSCT", or "treatment". I have global field that will be the radio button set which contains the same values as the Visits::Format field. Why sometimes when I make a change in the graph or definitions and when I leave, does it say it is making changes to the layouts and it seems to go through every layout in my file even if it isn't even related to a table I changed? It is very slow. And it says I can skip it but it gives no indication of what it will mean if I skip it. It is very unfriendly with no message and no way to look up in help what it even means. Can someone tell me what it is doing and what it means if I skip it? And if wrong place my apology. It seems to happen when I access remotely and I wasn't sure if that might be why it is asking me. Hi, Â I've created a layout that uses 2 images to act as buttons running scripts. The problem I have is that the bigger my database gets the slower it is to navigate and it's due to the images. Â I've attached a screen shot of my layout. The images are on the far right of the body section. They're just very small jpgs. Â I'm guessing filemaker is loading this image for every row (rather than once and repeating) so does anyone know of a technique I can reduce the load I'm putting on the file? Hi, Originally I built my line items for a quote to just use the record number symbol to automatically number them sequentially. My users want to be able to change the line item number and sort it ascending and move line items around as needed. I have created a field "LineItemNumber" to hold the value and I have the portal sorting ascending based on those values. My problem is some users forget to add line item numbers so I need a way to set the numbers automatically if they do. Also a user may have entered some item numbers on a quote, and go to add another new item, but forget to set that new line item number for the new item. Is there a way to set the m…

I have created a sales summary report layout for my DB and the totals are working great, but for some reason, the percentages make no sense. This is a sub summary on two fields (Account Rep and Job Type).  The Total Sales Amount column is a summary field based on the Sales Amount.  Currently, the percentage is a calculated field based = Sales Amount / Total Sales Amount.  Basically, I want the percentage to be the percentage of the 4th column compared to the grand total at the bottom.  What am I doing wrong?  (Report is attached)  Thanks, Ryan Â

I have a value list of the type "Use values from field" and "Use all values". A second field is shown (same table). When I change the record "view" access to "Limited" for the user's privilege set, that user is no longer able to use the value list, even if they have view privileges for all of the records in the table! Popup menus simply display "<no values defined>" Is this normal?

Windows7, FM-Adv, ver12.04 Why is it, when my mouse rolls over a hot spot, button ( causes the hand to show) then if i move the mouse pointer off that hotspot, (even roll it to the other side of the layout) it doesn't release the rollover hand until a click Seems like it should release the hand image when i am off the hot spot area TIA

I have a layout that displays "Job Notes" for historical review purposes. It is read only. The problem that I have is if a note contains a really long text, the user cannot see it all. What is the best way to display all of the data without having to create ridiculously large edit boxes? Most of these are one or two lines, but sometimes they put in a lot of text. I am trying to populate a fk. The way I am doing it is that I have a value selected from a list via a field in the parent table, and then have the pk corresponding to it in the parent table looked up and auto entered in the fk field of the child table. It worked for one record, got the right pk to populate the fk, but it's not worked since. What am I doing wrong?

Someone tell me I'm not crazy, please, I just upgraded to FM 12 and am frustrated with reducing a body and/or subsummary part. If I go too far (in reducing the size), it deletes the entire part! What? I have done this several times now (and of course, can't get the part back) and would like to know if anyone is having the same problem and/or if there is a solution. Sometimes, I really want my part to be all the way up to the bottom of my fields and/or text, but don't feel like I can do this anymore. argh! thanks for any validation

So I have a portal to another database; the two are joined by a relationship that is a calculation field on both sides. I have "allow creation" checked, but typing into the empty bottom row to create a new record throws the error "This action cannot be performed because this field is not modifiable." That actually makes sense, but I have no idea how to get around it. Suggestions? Thanks.

Hi there, I am using Filemaker 10Pro and hit a wall. I created an invoice layout that works great for all my needs. Now I needed to add a deposit field to it that can be subtracted from the total invoice. All i did was add a new field called deposit (number field) then created an additional calculation field to subtracted it from the total to create the final invoice field. Seems simple enough. The total invoice and deposit field are both in the same table so there should not be any linking issues. The problem is I am locked out of the deposit field and cannot enter a number into here. Hi guys -- I've FM 5.5v1 running on Mac OS 10.6.8. On one of the databases, everytime I created a new field FM would automatically enter it on the Table view but some weeks ago it stopped doing it. The database is around 90 fields so it's not too large. Does anybody know why and how to fix it? Best!

My boss asked me to make conditional list fields for a portal, that when I choose a value in a field, I can choose its own options in the other field. For example: There are too many products, with diferent suppliers. What I want is to can choose a supplier in the "supplier" field in a portal row, to then choose in the "product" field all the products that sells the specific supplier. I still don't have acces to the DB to view the tables.

Hi! I have two tables: Client and Contacts. The client table has a Portal that contains a list of Contacts (Emloyees, Contactors, Consultants) What I am attemping to do is one of two things: 1. Create a Value List from the Portal so I can choose one of the Contacts who is the Key Contact for that Client, or 2. Create a Conditional Value List that will list the Contacts related to that Client. For information I have a pop-up menu on my Contacts layout where you choose which client that Contact is related to. I have tried several things, I believe I must be messing upthe relationships. Any ideas?

I can't find where to adjust the height of the body. I know I can drag that tab or its bottom line but I need precision. Where are those numbers stored please? I thought it would be inspector position but when I adjust body height, that number stays at 0. I am missing something basic I think. What stumps me is that I can see the height in Inspector but it won't let me access it. New to FM. Thank you for being patient with obviously silly question.

Suppose you are using Web Viewer and click on a web link. If the link opens a new page in a new window, then that window will NOT open within your Filemaker layout. Instead, the page will open in your browser. OUCH! How do you keep spawned pages within FileMaker's Web Viewer when you access web pages that have "target= _blank" in their links? In other words, when you click on a link that will open a new window, how do you make that new window be a FileMaker WebViewer window?

I'd like to know if there is a way to generate a window identifier. My goal is to be able to open two identical windows and then have conditional formatting or calculated fields appear differently to the two windows according to selections made by the user. If I use conditional formatting based on global fields then they will be set across both Windows. Addendum: OK. I did find this post, which talks about using a custom window title, which I've considered. That's a little messy.

Hello everyone, I can't figure this one out. I have some nice fonts I installed on my Mac. They are working and available in all the other programs on my Mac. However, when I go to my FMPA12, they don't show up. I've tried deleting font caches, restarting the machine, installing fonts on both the user side and system side. No luck. I can't copy and paste from another that has access to the font, it just shows up in a generic font. Any ideas? It's driving me crazy. Thanks in advance for any thoughts... Stephen

This is really bugging me..I have a sales rep, customer, and sales order tables all related in a linear fashion. See image below. I have a layout based on the Sales Rep table with a portal on that layout showing related records from the SalesRep.Customer.Salesorder table.(Showing all sales orders by that sales rep) This is fine. Now, I want to show Customer's Company Name in the portal row, So I add field SalesRep.Customer::CompanyName to the portal. This seems like something that should be possible, but every time I try it, it does not work. I have a script that goes to each layout in my database. When doing so, it flashes and looks really ugly, so I want to 'hide' this window in the background while the script works on it, and create a new window with a "working" layout that remains in the foreground. Unfortunately, whenever I make a new worker window and "Select" it to bring it to the foreground, the script starts executing on the worker window. I have the following tables that manage the routes that Train Drivers have the competence to drive trains over: Train Drivers ->Competent Route Sections<-Route Sections Managing data this way is fine but do you get a much better overview if this data can be seen geographically on a map. The route gaps can be seen easily where it would be logical for a Train Driver to learn next etc. We do have geographical maps to show this but they are currently managed in word documents, changing a line on a route map from default black to red when a Train Driver is competent on that route. We want to summarise data from all projects by a particular client by date range. I'm quite happy with the way I've managed to set that up. What I'm having trouble with is adding a list of the projects as one piece of text. I can set up a script that finds all the relevant projects and exports the Project Name(s). And I think with a bit of messing about I could figure out how to import that to as one piece of text. (I can do it manually so I must be able to automate it!) I'm pretty sure though, that there's a simpler way. I've played around with Merge Variables but I really don't think I'm getting it. Any tips?

I am using FM 12.04 Advanced  I have a membership application.  Members -->> Dues  The LO is based on Dues     The problem is I can not get a Summary Count for Members::MemDuesStatus (Current or Late). I have placed the summary field in Dues. Didn't work. I placed the Summary field in Members. to the FMP Guru's out there, My solution contains a layout based on Table A that has two portals, one portal shows records from a related Table B that is only one relationship away. it works perfectly fine. The other portal is based on Table C which is related to Table B and ultimately Table A. The relationship works fine, and the portal almost always shows the correct data. On this layout as you go through the workflow it eventually changes a field in a record of Table C and then exits the layout. I need some theoretical and logistical help: My solution is a checkout system which involves penalties when an item is late. The problem is that two parts of the campus (luckily each running their own solution) want to impose penalties differently. My goal was to create a utility table so that I could create one solution that would potentially work for both parts of the campus. I have a layout with two portals containing related records. Some records are duplicates so I'm cleaning them up by moving the related records within these pages to the record I wish to keep. In the top portal the movement of the related record works OK. I cut the record ID out and paste in into the record I wish to keep - so the ID disappears from the duplicate record's portal as expected. However, the same doesn't happen for the second portal. This may be impossible but I would love to find a solution to this. I use tooltips to show data from other tables and/or layouts. For instance, we keep records of many different phone numbers for our different clients. We do not want to take up a lot of screen real estate with phone number fields. So what I do is set a tooltip that displays the clients phone numbers when you hold the mouse pointer over their name. It does not stay on the screen for long enough. Not sure if this is the proper section for this problem or not, but I am having a problem when in layout mode. Specifically, whenever I am in the layout mode and have any element selected, if I try to scroll the display it goes nuts (see attached screen shots). The only way to get out of this is to go back into browse mode, then return to layout mode and try again. Has anyone else run into this? before.tiff after.tiff

Hi All I am using FM 12 Pro Advanced, I am relatively new to this whole scene. I have several layouts which i want to print PDF's from. This is all ok i know how to do this but My layouts contain fields that i am resizing "sliding up based on content" The problem is i end up with spare blank pages at the end of the PDF when a user does not used the maximum field space and the thus the fields slide up. I have a large database with a multitude of fields where a value list via drop down is associated. However, when we set out to develop this, we didn't know what many of the values in these lists would be comprised of, so we didn't have any strict validation in place. Users were allowed to edit the very basic lists we came up with and we didn't have validation on any of the fields. Hi Folks, I hope someone can help; I've developed brain-fade! I have 3 tables: 1. musiclist (inc titles, song no/ID, composer etc) 2. Gigs (inc, date, venue etc) 3. Join table. I've got a portal on a Gigs layout pointing to the join table where I'd like to be able to add songs to gigs using a value dropdown based on the music in the music list. I am using FM 12 advanced v 4 in Windows  I have a layout based on Members. Members has a 1 to many relationship with DES table which holds a members Status (Suspended, Deceased, Reinstated etc)   When I run a report based on the script below, I get "SOME" of the DES records showing whatever is the TOP ROW of the DES portal. Sometimes, as shown above, I get a different portal row. (You can see the report showing the single record for Sperry dated June 2, 1997. It *should* show the top record dated June 9, 2003. Most of the other records show the top portal row record in the report. Sperry and Tietjens both show other portal rows.  Huh?  …

I am using FM 12 04 Advanced.  Here is the report: It is a sub summary report that breaks on "Current" and on "Late"   Here is the layout:  The weird part is that there are 66 (NOT 73) distinct CURRENT Records. I know. I printed the report and counted them.... 66. Here is another weird thing, I put YELLOW {{RecordNumber}} fields on each record and noticed that it skips values ? In fact, it skips 7 'records' which means that the reported total for Current 73-7=66 the correct number.   Notice it skips # 34.... huh?   BUT, if this isn't weird enough, the "Late" summary works as expected.  I am lost in the dark. Got any l…

Not sure if a portal is the best way for this but the scenario is as follows: Have a database with the following key tables: ClientDetails(1 to many) - Horses(1 to many) - Treatment Visit - Invoice I have basic invoicing set up, associated with a given treatment visit (which is linked to the horse, and owner). The invoice layout is based on the concept of using a portal showing a separate line items table (as some invoices will have more than one service item added). I have a small bug I was hoping someone might be able to help me with. I made a very simple JavaScript timer to display the amount of time spent on a task. Obviously it needs to display through the web viewer. It works well enough, however it sometimes causes Filemaker to get stuck when I attempt to leave the layout. This happens in FileMaker Pro and Go. Has anyone ever encountered a similar problem. I've added the code. I have three tabs on a layout with a container field on each tab that has a linked MS word document within it. I'm trying to create a simple script that will open the linked MS word document on the active tab. Each tab has an object name assigned through the inspector. I thought an If [] statement using the Get (activelayoutobjectname) might work followed by Go to field with (select/perform) checked but it doesn't. I'm sure it should be something quite simple.

I frequently will apply Conditional Formatting to a field and later decide that I want to apply the same settings to additional fields on my layout. In the past I have had success by selecting the field with conditional formatting and then subsequently selecting the additional fields that I want to clone the settings to. After I have the fields selected I simply open the Conditional Formatting dialog window and my settings for the field that I selected first shows up. Next, I simply close the Conditional Formatting window and the settings get applied to all of the objects that I had selected. I found a freebie at NightWind which demonstrates the technique (highlighting the current record in List View), but some of it escapes me. Here's what I did glean from Nightwind's demo: In my case I want the background of the current record to be a color, so I'll use that example. Is there a way to remove those black and white lines in list view ? Or at least to change their colors ? Note that I don't really want to display my data in list view, I'm forced to do so because the header does not stay on top in form view (which is pretty annoying if your header serves as a navigation bar). If someone has a way to have a header that is always visible no matter how far the user has scrolled that would be great. Thanks

Hello, Am I struggling with something or what! I fear that I'm trying to do too much with FMP9 and certainly more than my brain can handle! Simply put, I want to use a search string to filter a portal. Is this simple? On the Master table I have records of unique reference numbers (think contracts) consisting of an alphanumeric string, at least 9 characters long. On the portal table, I want to enter a string of 2 or 3 (random) numbers, then, (contract-side) perform a Position calculation which determines whether or not the string is contained within each record's reference number. Hi, I inserted hundreds of pictures to my database but forgot to check the "store only a reference to the file" box. Now my database has a 10GB size. :-( Is there a simple way to change all those pictures "status" (from embedded to referenced) in a single move or do I have to delete each individual picture and insert it again as a reference?

Hi maybe not exactly the correct place. Trying to update an old database into FMP12..! and I found the same problem, I have several custom dialogs, in my scripts, and still difficulty to have them take a size proportional to the text they hold..!! After I had a several sentences message opened, the next one is of five words and I have to click the resize button (top left) to shrink the message. Is there any trick to have the custom dialog grab a size in accordance with what it contains..?? If not (I could'nt find any yet) someone should talk to FMP folks to have that in an upgrade..!! TIA

Okay, now I'm forgetting things I'm sure I learned years ago . . . I have a simple Report layout based on a single table that hold records of gaming sessions (backgammon!). Each record holds info on various results of the session (Games won, Games lost, Points one, points lost, etc.) and various calculations (% games won, average net points won or lost per game, etc.). Hi,  I'm looking for a solution to create a find script in a portal.  I use a portal with a dynamic drop down menu to class my contacts. The dynamic drop down has 2 levels: Parent and Child (quite easy) - I call this a group.  A record can be part of several groups of course. Suppose that I want to find record that are member of 2 (or more) groups. When I enter the find modus in the portal it only allows me to fill in one row. I've dug around a bit and not found any solutions to my needs, so here I go. I'm guessing for some of you this will be a pretty simple task. For quite a while now, I've been trying to perfect a good List View sorting framework that would take a minimum of fields and scripts and be fairly portable. I recently saw one that Ocean West posted that hit almost all the needs. I had been using a script very similar to his, but Stephen took it one step further by abstracting the column header names. I am using FM 12 04 advanced on Windows. I created a report that uses 10 pt Verdana font. But, when I distribute the report to a user, when he runs the report it looks like 16pt TImes Roman. Huh? Is there someway to 'force install' a font on a user machine? Or is there some other source to explain this phenomena? Thanks Ron I just heard from the user and DOES have Verdana installed on his PC. Hi, I created a dynamic value list to class my contacts. I can add per contact a parent and a child classification (I call this a group) This classification is added in a portal, so I can choose more than one group per contact. The dynamic value list: first parent and than the children due to the choosen parent work fine. But only in browe mode. It won't work in find mode. Hi, This might be a silly question but I've looked high and low and can't seem to figure it out. I have a text field that gets its value from a value list via a drop down box. In Browse mode, when the user chooses a value it automatically tabs to the next field. However, I want it to stay on the field until the user chooses another. I can't figure out how to make it stop moving to the next field on its own. Thanks!

Hello. I am finding that I much prefer in many situations using a Value List based on values from a field. (the primary incentive is that it would help run some scripts; and provide the user with more control). This would require me to create a new table dedicated to the populating of the value list. Because one should try and limit the number of Tables/TOs in a file, does the addition of new tables for the Value Lists worth the benefit that this strategy provides? Thank you for any guidance you can offer.

Matt Petrowsky's recent solution (and video on the Filemaker magazine) to reorder portal rows using drag drop is inspiring, and will add much needed elegance to my database. I encounter one anomaly, and it relates to portals that employ a scroll bar. While dragging to a new destination, the portal rows don't scroll along with you. Has anyone who uses this solution had this issue? As a subscribed user of the magazine, I am unable to add Matt's technique file. I have a container field that stores a PDF file and I want to be able to view that container WITHIN Filemaker without the user having to export it. Is this possible? Is it possible to view a container/field from the web viewer? *I'm just thinking outloud here* I was thinking maybe having a script that sets a ~Temp container to the PDF I want to view, going to another layout with the Webviewer, and have the webviewer pointing to that ~Temp container... if that's even possible. I have a problem, something that is probably stupidly simple, and will probably figure out, in time. OK... I'm a relative beginner to this. Is there an easy way to implement sorting by clicking on the column header in a list view? I've done some searches and tried to implement this (http://www.filemakerhacks.com/?p=2341) but I'm getting errors (Some fields in the sort order are invalid or cannot be sorted. You must remove these fields from the sort order before performing a sort.) Is there a fairly straight forward way to implement this functionality?

This has probably already been answered, so I apologize, but I could not find it. I am trying to improve an inherited database. We have a layout that, with all elements that MAY need to be included on the printout extends to more than one page. However, 99% of the time, the entire printout easily fits on a single page (with sliding/reducing size of part). However, I continue to get the second page, including Header and Footer (although for testing purposes, I tried deleting those and it didn't make a difference - still got the second page. Hi, I have need to display a popup to ask a user for some information (an email address in this case), but by displaying a field, any other user that uses this screen will either have their own entry overwritten or cleared.
