I'd like to have an area in my form with a portal (I'm used to access, so I'm not sure if this is the right tool to use) for simply viewing records that have been linked to the initial record, say employees linked to the company, but not have any way to input the employees on that initial form. Then I'd like to have a button that allows me to pop-up a window to input a new employee into that company. Can a portal be just for viewing? I don't see a way to set that up. Also with the buttons I see an option for popping up a new window, but not for popping up a new window and going to a different layout? How do I accomplish this? Thanks!

FM experts, Working on developing a layout that will display like a screen saver that will cover other layouts with sensitive information. The pause/resume script step appears to be the best first step, but having trouble stopping the script from another window. I have a List View with 14 fields of which 5 are: Enquiry No; Enquiry Date; Company Name; Site Details; Completed by The header has 14 global fields of which 5 are: gEnquiry No; gEnquiry Date; gCompany Name; gSite Details; gCompleted by The user needs to be able to fill any one or more of the global header fields and see the list reduce to the record, or group of records, they're looking for. I am building an Event Log. The Setup: Client Table: Client Id, Event Level 1, Event Level 2, Event Level 3 Event Log Table: (Same fields). The Tables are tied, based on the Client Id. All good & simple. I have a portal for the Event Log. Originally, I created the Event Level Fields, in the Client Table, as simple Numbers. I filtered the Portal, based on the Event Level Selections. Originally, it shows all Events. If you select Level 1, it shows only Level 1 Events that you select. Same for the other two Levels. All well & good. I'm creating a db to replace an Access db. Features such as drop down lists are to match as near as possible. The Access db has a drop down with 4 items in it. I can join 3 of them using a calculation feld, leaving the other one free to 'drop' into the field. But one of the 3 items is in a related db. How do I get around not being able to list unindexed data?

Hi all I'm sorry if this is really obvious or the wrong place to post this, but I have been having a real frustration with FM Pro databases recently. I am editing my website databases using ODBC. As I tend to edit fields en masse, I use the "view as table" browse mode. In a lot of my columns, the fields I have contain more data than the column width will show. So I've tried adjusting the column width, but it won't let me. I've used the drag to resize function, and the right click and set column width one, but in both cases my column width remains the same. Hi, I have a table of suburbs, about 15,000, which I use in a dropdown value list, works fine AFTER the initial choosing. Hi, I feel a little dumb here for this easy question, but I could not figure it out. How can I display an optional date over a container field using conditional formatting a check box? - There are 2 fields : datePicture and showDatePicture. - The user has the possibility to show or not the date by checking the showDatePicture box. - There is always a value in datePicture. I was going to set the text of "datePicture" to clear pattern, but... surprise there is no transparent color for text. I have a task management program for my cabinetshop. Tasks are assigned priority 1-2-3 from a valuelist. There may be 10 items on the list but only three are in play at any time. The focus for 1-2-3 essentially means: Do this one now. Do this one next. Do this one if you something hangs you up on priority 1 or 2. By constraining the priorities to 1-2-3 we minimize the things under consideration. Going around in circles on this any help in getting me going in the right direction is greatly appreciated! Is it possible to display only items needed, triggered by particular checkboxes, while keeping remaining items tight without blank spaces. In Filemaker Pro 11 I can certainly use conditional formatting to make certain items invisible, but instead, when these items aren't needed, I want the remaining required items moved up. In actual practice, the full form spans several pages and unneeded sections could take up part of a page or span more than one page. Let me start by saying that I do not need a Conditional Value List here...I already have two of those in use and they work just fine. My issue is as follows: I have multiple tables in a Finance Database, One which holds transactions and one which holds Accounts and their info. In the Transactions form there is a field "Account" which is set to a Value List that simply gathers the Account names from the "Accounts" Table. I have a simple layout that, amongst other things, displays a single editable field with a drop down list. As the user enters the layout the list automatically displays. The problem is that after they choose something from the list and the field fills, the list drops down again, presumably because the cursor has nowhere to go. No other field can be entered and I don't want tab-able buttons, nor hidden fields. Can anyone suggest how I can resolve this frustration? (v11)

The background color of my layout body is a black. I have a portal sitting on top with alternating white/light grey background fills. The field on the portal row is set to transparent. In BROWSE mode that's fine, as the field reveals the color of the portal row below. However, In FIND mode, because the field is transparent, it is showing the black background color of the body fill. Is there anyway to control the field background color in FIND mode so that it doesn't show the black background color of the body fill. Hi there, I'm building a solution in wich I'm using TabPanel Controls a lot. The standard aligning behavior for the Tab(labels) is Left, Right, Center or Justyfy. I'm looking for a way to set the ailgnment to Left but let the first Panel start on x pixels. The reason is that the portal diplayed on the first tab has to be on 0 pixels from the left. This means that the tab(label) also will be on 0 pixels. I don't like that. Ofcourse it is possible that the labelsetting is Labelwith + margin but that applies to all of the tabs and not only the left one. Is there any solution? Thanks in advance. Adri

Just curious. I know merge field can and are used on reports, but what about using them in a layout that will be in browse mode? Is this wise? The advantages: User can not change the fields. I am having difficulty getting information based on date ranges in a portal. My portal rows when clicked by the user highlight in an ugly brown colour. Also, the portal has a picture in a container field that turns to a negative. There is a button on the portal and a scroll bar on one of the fields, so I can't put a mask over the portal to stop any row being made active. Is there a simple way to overcome this?

Hey Everyone, I've run into some formatting issues with a date fields i have. I opened up the file this morning and i discovered that my "expiry" field has a question mark instead of the date, i haven't changed anything with the layout and the field is definitely wide/tall enough so i don't really know whats causing it. When viewing the records the field displays the question mark, but when i click into the field in browse mode the question mark disappears and the date is displayed... I'm trying to print labels for EVERY job we have in our database (roughly 1000 jobs) on Avery 5162 labels. I'd estimate it'll take roughly 70-80 pages. I went through the label creator, selected my label size, etc and it created ONE label for me. I want it to show the 14 label fields and when I show "view all records" it will just print everything on multiple sheets. I feel like its a really simple concept, but it seems to be really complicated. Am I crazy? I attached screenshots about where I'm at.

I am working on a summer camp database that essentially has one table for campers, staff members, clubs, classes, teams. There is also a "grouping" table which links staff members to their club, class and team; each staff member hashas one club, one team and one class. I've had a search for various Dymo printing problem topics and tried many different things but I cannot get Filemaker to successfully print an 90010 address label on a Dymo 400 printer. I have set up a new layout , ditched the header and footer , made the body the height of the label and zeroed the margins (pretty much everything that other people have suggested , and have got working). Every time i run the script , it tells me that the combined size of the header and footer is longer than can fit on the page . please try reducing the header and footer. has anyone got a template they can attach as i'm getting nowhere. Hi everybody, I load a webpage with TEXT and 3 images in the web viewer and I want to save this webpage firstly in a container field and after in my harddisk. I use GetLayoutObjectAttribute ( "yourWebviewerObjectName" ; "content" ) into a script to store the content but although the webpage is correctly loaded in the WV, I only get the plain text and I don't know where are the images. Off and on over many months, I've looked for a way to turn off the dotted field outlines that display when the user clicks in any blank area of the layout. I've attached a sample file that clearly demonstrates the effect. I would believe that it just isn't possible, if it weren't for the fact that a few fields on a few of my layouts don't display the outline. I'm working on an inspection app to be used on iPads using FM Go in the field. The inspection type I'm currently working on requires that elements receive different weight across multiple categories. I have already entered the maximum valid values for each element into the database, and have been using validation to ensure that the user-entered score for that element is less than or equal to the max allowed value. Instead of using free-form data entry I would like to implement a pop-up menu, but I'm not sure how to populate the value list to show integers 1 through the maximum allowed score. Thanks in advance!

Hi All, I have tried both a self-join relationship and conditional formatting to make a touchscreen keypad disappear/reappear. I want the keypad to appear when someone enters any field, and disappear when they exit the field. I have a report/layout, that has one repeating field horizontally at the top, listing different cars like Mercedes, Mazda, BMW etc. Vertically on the left I have a list of the attributes like Electric Windows Aircondition Aluminium Wheels etc If a Car has the attribute the report shows "yes" in the relevant box. I have a table of courses for each student and their grades. I'm trying to get averages for the different courses. So I created a summary filed for the number of grades per course (sort by course) and summary for total of all grades for course. Then I have a summary part that has the course name (summary break on course name) and I created a calculation field for the total of grades over the number of grades that their are rounded to two decimal places. Hi folks, I am working on a POS system and was wondering if any of you had run into the same frustrations with FileMaker that I have. First off, using a touchscreen to enter dollar amounts. Ideally, I would like FM to imitate a standard cash register by NOT requiring the entry of the decimal point. I cannot find the straight answer and this seems very rudimentary... sorry. I just cannot seem to get it right. I have a table called Users with a layout of user information. There are approximately 200 records in this table. I want to create a new layout that has the entire list of students in rows. The purpose of this is to create a "Quick Link" to user information in the other layout. Is there a way to create a portal that has fields in a row rather than down? I have parents and I have students. Hi all, In my solution I'm using a portal. The relationship is very easy: id (unique value) to id_x. (one-to-many) On my layout the portal is placed on a TabControl Panel. I've placed an icon in the portal row for adding a new record in a new window.. Clicking on the icon a new window opens, I enter the data and I close the window. Nothing happens in my portal until I switch to another record or lay-out and back. When I enter the data directly in the portal everything is ok. Hello all! I'm trying to figure out how to make the following conditional formatting problem work: I want it such that there is a red or green circle filled in (or perhaps displays a graphic of a red vs green button) depending on if all the data for a row is filled in (if all is filled in, then green, meaning complete), where as if there is information missing, then the button is red (meaning there is information for that specific record which is incomplete). Hi, I read a lot of "Drag n' Drop" post all over the web, but nothing conclusive or it was wrong. Some say that FM11 does not have Container Drag & Drop capabilities from a source outside the application. Well, in windows it is working very good. on my old macbook it was also working very good. Greets from the land of 100°F+ (38°C+) daily temps for months on end. Ugh. I'm creating a runtime where it includes the typical address fields you'd find in most solutions: Street, City, State, Postal Code and Country. In Filemaker 8.5, I had a custom Record menu with a "Go To" submenu with items First, Previous, Next and Last. This still works in FMP 11, but at the cost of disabling the navigation items on the status toolbar. That is, if you want the navigation items enabled, you must have FileMaker's own "Go to Record" submenu installed somewhere in your menus. Or am I missing something?

Each row in the portal shows the dateYear and amount of the dues payment. The portal sorts on the dateYear descending. I want to create a SubSummary report that will sort on the dateYear field but ONLY PICK UP THE TOP (ie, highest ranking) dateYear and it's associated dues information. The way it is now, if a member makes payment in 2009, 2010 and 2011, each entry shows up under the appropriate year. One under 2009. One under 2010 and one under 2011. I have a FileMaker file with several layouts. The one-page layout works as expected, but the two-page layout prints only the first page. Is there a setting that I need to change? There is a large field (edit box) which spans both pages, plus smaller fields on both pages. I checked all the settings related to the fields on the second page and they seem right to me -- "hide while printing" is off, etc. The layout itself clearly spans two pages, the trim sizes being clearly marked. Conditional formatting is not set for any object and the text is long enough to have several paragraphs on the second page. What can I do?

Ok, so I've watched tutorials on sub-summaries but still can't seem to get how they work. When I create a layout with sub-summaries, it either lists every record or just one. I'm assuming since I'm using FM 11 Adv, I am automatically using live sub-summaries so they work in browse mode. Attached is my simplified project. Hi, I am trying to use custom graphic images as checkboxes instead of the filemaker ones and can't quite figure it out. The checkbox graphically works, the only problem is I need it to check off the original filemaker checkbox (it works in a script of mine). How do I tell a multi-valued checkbox to click on a certain value without disrupting the other ones? The original checkbox is the basis for a find query ending in a report with over 20 values. This seems to me like an incredibly stupid question. I have Filemaker 11 on my PC. Everywhere I look there is talk of how well Filemaker handles being used on a PC or on a Mac. I have now bought an IMac. Can I take my Filemaker 11 program and simply load it onto the Mac. I can see how Filemaker GO works. I suspect that it is only the solutions that work on both machines. However, nowhere does it say this is not what can happen. Is this because it is so obvious, and everyone knows it can happen.

I have two web viewers, showing custom code generated based on field objects. Each was working perfectly yesterday. Today, for no reason I can discover, they are both exceeding the bottom border of their bounding boxes (in the picture, they bottom edges are in the blue bar but should stop within the white box above that). I've tried changing their size (both bigger and smaller) with no change in symptoms. Creating a new web viewer with the same calculation as the content Did fix the problem, though. Hi All. I am creating an application that will go to various websites, but I need to go through proxies(Which will be loaded into the file). Hi all, Hoping someone can help me out here. I have a pretty standard "Time Log" table in which the employee can put the client, project number, task, and time. I also have a table for the projects, which contains the project number, client, due dates, status (Open, Complete, Hold, Canceled), information, etc. In the Time Log table, the project number is a drop-down value list, so that once the client is picked, the value list only shows the project numbers related to that particular client, and this works perfectly. Filemaker Pro 11 Advanced Filemaker Pro 10 Server Windows 7 Pro Any time I need to change the navigation buttons on my database, I end editing one layout header part and then copying and pasting it to every other similar header part. It gets tiresome. There has to be a way make changes in one place globally and display those buttons on every header part where it's appropriate. When I log in as full access, and install the menu set with these custom menus, they appear fine. However, when a non-full access user logs in, they're disabled. This includes most of the custom menus, but not all. Hi folks! Been a long time since I've setup or even used FM. Its been about 15+ years. Trying to set up a data base for myself of my customers. I'm in the graphic business. I know that others have had this issue in the past, as I read on it a couple of years ago, but now I cannot find those forums. I hope this is in the right topic area. Rather than setting custom menus, I just want to toggle some of the basic preference choices that FilemakerPro gives to the user. For example, I'd like to disable the database browser pane, the "Notify me when an update is available" option and the "Notify me when a new version is available" option. From what I am reading, this may be impossible or at least improbable. I have a table of status made up of the following: status_ID;status_active;status_sort;status_text It is related to a contacts table via the status_ID in a 1 to 1 relationship (i.e. each contact can have 1 status). I am storing the status_ID value in the Contact table. My question: I would like to be able to keep a user from selecting an inactive status from a popup list and I would like the values to be sorted by the status_sort values. I am setting up an insurance billing database for use via IWP, and I am having some trouble getting the "reporting" interface right. I'm trying to do this with a portal...this may not be the best way. Basically, I am tracking patient visits for each month. I would like to create a portal on an ORDERS layout (table ORDERS 2008) that shows a 'found set'. For ease of use I want to design a layout with the Order on the left and a Tab Control to the right. The Tab Control will hold a series of Portals. Two of these portals currently are: 1) a list of all the Orders in descend chronological order, 2) the payment history of the Contact . I have have three related tables: People--<JoinPeopleGroups>--Groups I have a portal in a layout based on the Group table, that uses the "JoinPeopleGroups" table occurrence. To store a field id that is related to another table but to display a text field from the related record on a layout, I believe the common solution is to create a field that stores the id but uses a value list for data entry, with only the second record displaying in the value list. One then overlays a field displaying the related value. I provide a simple example of this solution in the Data layout of the attached file. I have a value list of competitions, hiding the ID. RegionA 2010 RegionA 2011 RegionB 2010 RegionB 2011 and so on, for many years. I have a Photo Catalog Database that stores family photos from a designated folder on a Hard Drive. These photos are displayed by and import routine that adds the file reference to a container field. The problem I have is if I move my database file to some other drive or folder, or even rename the Drive Volume, I loose the file reference. Somewhat understandable... But is there anyway I can "re-attach" the references without re-importing all the images? I have over 9000 images. That would not be fun. Hi, I have opened my FP7 file, which I created on a windows machine, on a Mac. The problem is that about third of the graphix looks not as on the Win machine. For example, many of the PNG's I used look brighter and text boxes are higher... A sample pic is attached... I am building an Aged Receivables Report in Filemaker. While my report uses our Invoices table, I've excluded the body part, and am using a "Sub-summary when sort by" part. This part contains a number of summary fields that sum the balances of this Invoices table to show some total balances for each customer. It is working as expected. Hello I am creating portals using Kieren MacMillan's Fast create type of portal. I am also using a calculation script to add additional data to the Line item . My problem is if I don't click on the required button to perform the script the record is commited and don't appear at the correct place in the report. What is the best way to not commit a record to the portal when clicking anywhere on the layout? I also have other fields not in portals in the layout... so I'm not sure if the layout script trigger is the solution. Thank you

When choosing between portal filtering in FM11 or adding another unique relationship to the relationship table is there any argument for one or the other in terms of improving the speed of a database? When I edit a layout, I can drag the word "body" down to add more space, and can add any fields I need and move them to their position. But, I can't get any more space to the right of the screen. If I drag fields past the dotted line they disappear. I can't seem to drag the line to the right to make the layout bigger. I know it has to be possible. What do I do?

I'm working on a ordering system (purchase requisitions) that's integrated with asset, etc., tables. When order line items are created, I'd like to eliminate redundant data entry, so that if a manufacturer part number, for example, is entered in an order line item record, that is related to the asset records. I have looked everywhere for some information if there is a possibility of using a checkbox set with a script to manage rooms in a hotel format. My two questions are... 1. Can I use a Checkbox set to check the rooms that I want to use. 2. Is there a way to write a scipt that checks to see if a room that is clicked is available during a date range. The portal that I have created has seven rows and each row has a serial number. The problem is that I need each row's serial to be unique. As of right now, the serial numbers auto enter as the same number (i.e. all seven rows have the serial number of 91, but I need 91, 92, 93, 94, 95, 96, and then 97).
