Hi, Although I have search in FMForums I have not found the solution to a lost password issue in FMServer 9. Client has lost the password and also has done some sort of "manual based correction attempts". The result is an "Unable to launch the application" dialog box when I tried to open the Console. Two issues worry me: - Although the files are served an apparently work well, is there any real and inmediate risks in such a configuration for the data? -How to access to the heart of FMServer in order to set new user/password to the FMServer Console. Server is Xserve with 10.6-server and other services inside running. Any documented issues a…

I have a client with FM Server on a Windows machine - I don't know the operating system. They are able to access the Admin Console while within the network but I am unable to access it from outside of the network (I'm working remotely). This URL - http://clientIP:16000 - simple returns "Failed to open page". More information, according to the client: 1. FM Server is installed on one machine. 2. Ports 16000 and 16001 are open. 3. Client has my IP address to allow me to get through the firewall. 4. I am able access the db file remotely. 5. I am able to access the db file via IWP. 6. The IWP IP - http://www.clientIP/fmi/iwp/res/iwp_home.html - is the sa…

I'm currently running FileMaker Server Advanced 11 on Windows Server 2003. We're trying to move to an X-Server. I've got OS X 10.5 installed and FileMaker 11 Server Advanced along with it. All of that went smoothly. I then closed down all of the files on the Windows server and proceeded to copy them over the network to my new server. They show up in my new FM admin as expected, but when I try and open them nothing happens. Nothing. No disk activity. The status doesn't change. No spinning wheel. Nothing. I try open all, nothing. I try to open 1 at a time. Nothing. The sample file opens and closes just fine. Just not the ones I copied over. Any inf…

Hi all, I found confirmation in this forum that installing on win 2008 R2 is trouble-borne for some of us. I think I have a new issue to report: 2 machines with same server OS. All FMSA runs fine if deployed under either environment. Making one the worker (with ports & versions checked & confirmed), the other one the master, works somehow as expected. Exception: have to enter the worker's ip address since it is located in DMZ. Deployment then works fine. Services on worker get started as expected. BUT connecting to e.g. FMServer_Sample via IWP fails in a special way: it returns a blank page. That is, no error, but a blank page with HTML header i…

so if you join FM technet for $99 you get a free version of FMS9, sounds too good to be true- it kinda is. It works like a full version, but is limited to 5 FM client connections at a time. So for deployment, do I have to pay the full price, or just an upgrade license with my technet license key ? Has anyone had experience with this?

Hello, We are a small company currently running an FM database, with just one user. We want to be able to have more users at times, as many as 5 - 7. We are thinking of setting up a dedicated Mac Mini to host the file, but I'm not sure if we should be using FM Server or Peer-to-Peer. The Peer to Peer sharing speed has drastically improved in the recent versions of FM, so that isn't a hinderance now. The main reason for us having FM Server would be the automatic backups, but I'm wondering if I couldn't just use Peer to Peer, and setup a timed script on the host that would Save A Copy every night. I could even have another script run before the backup script that…

New in FileMaker® Server 11 and FileMaker® Server 11 Advanced is that the FMS Helper Service/Daemon monitors the heartbeat of the Admin Server and thus of the Console. If it goes deaf, the Helper Daemon/ Service will attempt a restart. Hopefully this will help address some of the issues reported with unresponsive Consoles. Steven

Hi everybody, Before buying a copy of FileMaker Server 11 Advanced, I'd like to have some information regarding web deployment! Currently, our Mac Mini (the latest one with OS X Server v10.6) is serving web, file sharing, printers, calendars, address book, dns and vpn services to the company's employees. I'm aware that FileMaker advices not to install FMSA if there's any web/file/printer sharing service, but the other server we've got is PPC so we can't run FMSA on that one. And, anyway, FMSA will be serving a very little amount of data, so performance is not going to be a problem! The point is... That machine is currently serving 2 websites with Apache…

When I setup the server I bypassed the option to save an icon on my desktop. Now I'd like to do that. Is there a way to do it after I bypassed that option? In lieu of that, I've saved console in the dock, when I quit Admin Console the icon changes to rectangular gray square with "exec" in corner. When I launch it from dock, Terminal opens instead of Admin Console. Any ideas? Thanks in advance.

HI, I have a development server running on a Mac Mini. Currently the ram reserved for database cache is set to the default of 64 Mbytes. The server indicates that this values can go up to 800 mbytes on the system. What is the recommended setting for this? What are the advantages to increasing the value? Are there any negatives side effects to setting this to a higher value? If so what are they? Thanks very much. Bruce Herbach

But when the script runs it does not import the records. I do a find the database that I want the data from. Then go to the table that I want the data to end up. I noted an anomalous behavior this morning, where the Server admin console reports that the server is not running when it is, in fact, running. I know the server is running because I can open files hosted by the server in Filemaker Pro. When I first launch the admin console, it takes an unusually long time to launch. But once it's launched, I can authenticate to it. When the admin console comes up, it reports under Server Overview that the ODBC/JDBC server is off, which is fine; I don't have that functionality enabled. But when I click on any of the other entries (e.g., Clients, Databases, Schedules, etc.), I get a dialog that says, "The Database Server is not a…

Hi So far, I've done developing only for desktop/client based solutions, but I'm now talking to two different departments in a college setting about upgrading their existing legacy databases and making them accessible to a wider (but not huge) audience within the walls of the college. So, I'm figuring FMP Server 11 is the way to go, and it's high time I got educated/experienced with Server. First, though some really basic questions: 1) If they are part of the same college computer network, will a single FMP Server license suffice for managing databases for both departments? Is there a maximum number of database files that server can manage? I imagine not . .…

Hey all, anyone know of others having problems with IE8 rending the webpages through IWP on server 10 advanced? I've come to the conclusion that it is DEFINITLY something with the browers as I have tried Firefox, Chrome, and even IE7 and all work fine. It seems like IE8 doesn't always want to read the HTML file Server puts out. I get everything either shifted or scrunched over to the left and nothing is centered. if anyone knows any fixes or issues to be aware of please let me know. Thanks! Bill

I know this topic has probably been talked about already, but is Filemaker Server 8 compatible with Leopard? I just got a MacMini and plan on using that as a Filemaker Server. I installed FMS 8 and get an error that I cannot connect to the server. If FMS 8 is not compatible with 8 and I can't install Tiger on this new MacMini, what are my options? Do I have to buy Server 9 and does anyone know if that is compatible with Leopard yet? Thanks!

We are running FM Server on a Windows server. The remote database publishing works fine, but when we try to connect via IWP in a web browser, the browser tries to DOWNLOAD the page rather than display it. So I'll go to this address: http:///fmi/iwp And I get a dialog box saying: "You have chosen to open iwp which is a: application/x-msdownload" This happens in multiple browsers, and in multiple OS, leading me to believe that the problem is with the server. :)

Hey Guys (and Gals), I just installed FM Server 11 advanced trial on Windows server 2003 R2, and everything went fine. FM server started up, and ran just fine. I restarted my windows server, and now FM server starts, but gives me the error message that the database engine hasn't started, and needs to be started by administrator. When I click on the start button, nothing happens, but a long wait, and then the start button becomes unavailable, but database engine still not working. Any suggestions or help in identifying the issue? PS...Yes, fmserver is started under my "Services" on Windows server. Thanks in advance. Really looking forward to owning this…

I am running FM10 Server and need to be able to allow my clients, (mac and PC) to be able to store images in the same shared location. Currently, these images are stored within the FM Database. However, I really need to be able to sync the images to a website as well. So, I was thinking that I could store them in the database, as normal, and then schedule a script that exports the updated images to a shared location and then I can have another program running that will keep the image location synchronized with the website. However, Export Field Contents is not available server-side. Any ideas?

I'm running a server using FMS 9 and the client is running Filemaker pro 9 advanced. The solution works by starting a startup file that accesses a file on the server which then activates databases both on the client side and the server. These interconnections happen multiple times throughout the solution. My current problem is that I can't get the databases server side to connect to the client databases without hard coding the path to said folder, e.g. when I ask the database on the server to use the relative datapath (file:.fp7) in External Data Sources it simply searches for said file in the server's folders. For now I've managed to fix the problem on Windows by si…

I am running FMS 10 with generally less than a dozen Clients connected, each running FMP 9, 10, or 11; and all running Mac OS X v.10.x (except one on Windows XP). Each Client usually has 18 databases open - 5 for regular use and 13 as hidden lookup files. This setup has slowly evolved over several years, so there is obviously some collateral code lingering around that is either untouched or slows things down unnecessarily. That said, my issue is with most of my Clients showing up in the FMS Administration screen twice - once with all the open databases listed, and once with duplicates of a few of those databases. Which databases are duplicated appears to be related t…

On all existing clients I have a fm9 opening file that has the script "open remotely" where the user selects the "Access" file on the server from the "remote pop up window", then when opening this "Access" file on the server, causes its log-in window to pop up, for the user to enter the user name and password, which when correct, then continues the script to open all the other files with the same user name and password passed on to these other files seamlessly. This works just file for all my clients except the new laptop just acquired. This laptop accesses the server, but when opening remotely using the same opening file (or manually) the "Access" file opens WITHOU…

I am thinking about buying server hardware dedicated to our FM11A server. Any suggestions. We have about 40 simultaneous client connections and plan to have 100+ web connections, not all simultaneously or even for very long. I just assumed responsibility of a number of FileMaker databases from a developer who left our company. I have very little FileMaker experience so please forgive my ignorance. Our server support folks indicated that they have to manully start FileMaker on the server everytime the server is rebooted (i.e. log on to the server and restart FileMaker). It is possible to have FileMaker start 'automatically' when the server comes up (maybe through a script)? All of our FileMaker databases are served up via the web. Thanks!

Hi, I have FM database solution, accessed by a number of Win XP pcs running FM pro 8.5, and a Win Server 2003 running FM 8.5 server. I need to get three more FM Pro licences (as 3 more Win XP PCs need to access the database). Since I cannot purchase FM Pro 8.5 any more, I assume my only option is to purchase FM Pro 11. But I am concerned that those PCs running FM Pro 11, will not be able to open and use the FM 8.5 databases. Does any one know if this is possible, and will all the features of 8.5 work in 11? Or, is my safest option to upgrade the server and current PCs to all ver 11? Thanks

Hi. I am looking to work around a problem that I am having with FMS/IIS and Apache. Now I know that one is not supposed to run anything else alongside FMS, but the problem is IIS it would seem. In my case, I have Apache hosting a few small websites on port 80. IIS also wants port 80. So I would like to achieve either of the following: 1. Either have FMS be able to use Apache for the IWP function (most ideal arrangement as I'm not keen on IIS really anyway) on port 80, or 2. Work out how I can use another port number under IIS for FMS. Problem with this though is that I am hosting several domains and websites and issue is that IIS doesnt do this well, if a…

I'm running FMPro 10 v.3 under Win7 virtualized via VMWare Fusion on OS X 10.6.3. So I run several databases, they're hosted by FileMaker Server 11. The clients are a mix of FileMaker 8.5, 9, and 10 Pro. One of the DBs I connect to via ODBC from 2 different PCs. This worked perfectly until I switched servers. The original server was a Mac Pro running 10.5 Server, it decided to have a massive spectacular hardware failure today, so I installed FMS11 on another server machine, this one a Mac Mini running 10.6 server. This has worked fine for everything else. Everyone is connecting to the other databases via FM protocol no problem. However, ODBC doesn't work. The server console shows that the file is shared via ODBC, it is readable and writeable …

Actually, I'm not completely sure that the problem is as stated in the subject line, but it sure looks that way. We are running FMP 8.5Adv on a number of platforms (OSX, OS9 and various Windows), connecting to about two dozen files on an OSX (10.4.11) server running FMS9.0.3.325. It has been stable for several years now, with minor ups and downs as we fiddle. In the last week, all of a sudden, a number of files running on the clients have stopped working normally. In particular, a number of fields in particular layouts are marked as requiring values before the layout can be changed. All of a sudden, FMP8.5 clients are insisting that fields on OTHER layouts be comp…

It isn't practical to simply set a schedule for the server computer to turn off and on since it is running other things that need to still be available.

I am doing a project for a client. They are using fms 8 on a pc server. I built the project in fm10. The file has the extension .fp7, sharing is turned on, accounts have fm network access. The server says the file is open and normal but no one can connect to it (open remote file dialog is NOT checked). Any suggestions??? This is baffling since the server says the files are normal. BTW, the server is properly hosting out other files so it is not a connection issue.

I have not logged in to our FileMaker Server 9 Admin Console in a long time, but this morning after reinstalling FMP Advanced 9 on a new laptop I cannot connect to the server so I wanted to check that the server was ok. But the Admin Console login is clearly something unusual because I can't figure out what the login is. Is there a way I can retrieve or reset my forgotten login?

Can someone help me understand the maximum number of FileMaker files Server 11 Advanced can host simultaneously? The FileMaker site advertises the following, does this mean FMSA11 now can host "unlimited" files per HW constraints? "NEW! FileMaker Server 11 Advanced does not limit the number of FileMaker Pro clients. Connections are limited only by your hardware and operating system." Thanks in advance, much appreciated.

We are migrating from Version 5.5 (Server)/ 6 (Client) into Version 11. Working remarkably well so far. We even have Server 11 hosted on a Windows Virtual Machine. Not a problem so far. However, when I go to set up the Backup Processes, I have a problem. I specify "c:/FM Backup 1" as my folder. When Server does its backup process, it creates a time/date stamped folder under that. I can't find a way around it. ("Daily 1 AM_2010-04-19_0100" as an example.) We have Windows Batch Files that pick up the files & move them where we need them (for 5.5). If I can't specify the name of the exact folder, I can't pick up the files & work with them. …

Hiya, We use peer to peer sharing between FMP11/Win7 PCs. The actual files are stored on a server share for backup purposes. The 'main' PC opens the files directly from this share with sharing turned on. Other clients open using the Remote option. The causes the warning about sharing from remote locations (server shares) may cause performance issues. Is there anyway to stop this warning? Alternatively if there is a way to acheive the following using Server that would be great: 1) Ability to copy the files from the share to a laptop for offline use 2) When the laptop is brought back in, ability to copy back to the share overwriting the files …

I've installed FMS 9 Advanced on my Mac running Leopard with Apache 2.2 and every time I try to set up Web Publishing on my Machine I get either: "Web Server Test Failed. Return code = False" or "Web Server Test Failed. Return code = -1" Anyone know what's causing this !? I can access localhost without any problems, My httpd.conf file has correct syntax and has no mention of any Filemaker includes and even though I'm using my own version of PHP I've moved the API files to Web Server > Documents, just in case it was that. PLEASE HELP !

I have a client who's server had a power outage and FileMaker 9 Server was closed improperly (Windows). I was able to successfully recover their database files so that is fine but the problem is I now can't get FileMaker Server Admin Console to open. I've tried stopping and starting the FileMaker service (which seems to work), but when I open the console nothing comes up. I've even tried uninstalling the FileMaker Server software and reinstalling but that didn't fix the problem. Any ideas?

Hi, I'm posting this hopefully easy one to start 2010. I have an image database running on Filemaker Server 10 on Snow Leopard, everything runs fine except I can't get the images to show up in IWP. I followed the instructions on the IWP guide and copied the image files to /Library/WebServer/Documents/, permissions are good (the same as the other files in WebServer/Documents) and the IWP works well, everything that is embedded shows up, but none of the referenced files. I even tried re-adding the image reference thru Filemaker Pro in the server, and still no luck. Could anyone point me in the right direction? Thank you! Jose.

Hi everyone Not sure if this is the right place to post this question but here goes Me and my partner want to be on our database at the same time, but from different locations e.g. I'm in the office and my partner is at home. I'm guessing this involves using some sort of server, however we are only a very small company and don't want to use anything too expensive. Me and my partner are both currently using filemaker pro 11 on windows.

Hi, I am planning to develop a solution under a subscription based model. 1. sorry, wasn't sure where to post this topic. 2. any problems with remote hosting? I don't want to deal with maintaining a machine, and Server's bugs. 3. if I have 10 clients using my solution (each has their own DB file), what would be the best procedure if I need to update the solution? IE, right now, my own solution, I log-in and work on it live. sometimes changing a layout, sometimes adding a field. I am thinking that I have to run through an export/import routine. but that just seems scary to me.

Greetings all, I suddenly am having issues with clients not being able to connect to the FileMaker pro files hosted on the server. Trace routes from clients outside the network are able to get to the host but the data is not coming back to the client. It seems to be related to Windows clients as I can connect remotely with the Mac version. Has anybody run into this or have any idea what may be causing it? Thanks in advance! Peace.

I set up a Windows batch file that simply opens a non-hosted FileMaker file. When the FM file is run, it performs some tasks, then exits. When I run the batch file as is, it works just fine. I setup a FMS schedule to run said batch file. I set it up to run under a Windows Admin account that I know is good (I manually ran the file using the same account). Each time the schedule fires, it aborts with a status of 'System script error'. Looking in the log viewer, I see an error of 692 - 'returned non-zero status -1" Now I can understand this being a problem if the schedule was run under the Local System user or other non-priv user. But this is set up as …

Hi, I just created a restore disk image of my Filemaker Server Advanced 9 on my laptop. I would like to develop new functions without directly working with the online server. Everything seemed at first to work fine. I was able to log in the server admin console and the status of the databases are normal. The image was verified when created. But when I tried to make a search using http://localhost/[php-code] I can't get any connection to the database. Iwp says "database not available", php solutions don't return any values from the databases. Other things like static images and text do appear. Anyone had similar kind of troubles or any ideas of how to …

I am trying to run an automated server script that spans across two files. Here is the setup: In File1 there is a Staff table that lists all demographic information for employees. In File2 there is a table for time sheets. The two tables/files are linked by staff_id. I want to run a script that automatically emails staff who have overdue time sheets. This works when the email address is stored in the time sheet table, but the real location is in the staff table in File1. Doing some Googling I have seen that when a server runs a script it cannot go between files even though there are relationships between the two. Is there a way to directly reference a rela…

Hi, I represent a digital printing company and we are looking to use Web2Print technology on our website. we are avid filemaker users and we are in the means of creating with a programmer a project management database software. what we would like to create within this new program is some sort of form that our customers would fill in via a web browser on our website and the project submission would then be within our filemaker database automatically. so now we wouldn't have to type back in the form informations back in filemaker via an email that would be sent to the project managers once the customer fills up the project ticket. a job ticket would be created auto…

Hi all, I have FileMaker Server 9 running (under Max OS X Server 10.5.5), sharing a database via FM and ODBC. On a Windows PC, I have the Sequelink ODBC 5.5 driver installed, and my system DSN is configured and works fine. The driver seems to take a really long time to run almost any query. This query: SELECT * FROM Shipment WHERE REFERENCE1='18281' returns only 1 record, but my hard drive's grinding away and my client application is hung for a good 30-45 seconds before the data appears in it... Is there any way I can structure my query to improve the speed...? Where is the performance bottleneck?

I'm beginning to move my FM files over to Server 9. I used to have an icon on each workstation that, when clicked on, would take you directly into a specific application and ask for your password. For exactly, to get into the day camp application, click on the day camp icon and you automatically go to the file for day camp where it asks for your password. Now that I use server, I open remote, and then open local or favorite hosts and click on the appropriate file. Is there a way to create an icon on the desktop that will automatically go to the server and open the particular file directly without the additional steps? Sorry for being so long winded on this one. Mike

I have an encryption computation that exists as a command-line tool that I can call from the OS X shell (e.g. `/usr/bin/myEncrypt xyz` returns a value: 12345 ). I need to use this on a server-scheduled script to use this to populate a field in my database. I see that in FMSA11 there is a new class of scripts which has pre and post scripts -- It runs a FileMaker script, then a Shell script, then a FileMaker script -- so I could probably use this to export records, process them in the shell, then re-import. But this seems like overkill. Is there perhaps a simpler way to do this? Maybe using PHP or ODBC in the shell script itself?

I've got a very basic script that loops through all of the records in a database and updates 1 field (indexed) with the value of another (non-indexed) calc. field. This it to improve performance from PHP API web apps. When I run the script from inside FM Pro myself it works just fine. When I setup a schedule to run the script it says "running" for about 30 seconds and then says "Script aborted" without any information as to why. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

I have written a bespoke solution for a client called ADG. This has a two file structure, interface and a data file. These are constantly crashing and taking down the server too; this has become so bad that the client has resorted to client copy as a host as while this still crashes often the files do not corrupt when doing so. The situation is no longer workable, I have tried everything I know to resolve this problem including a complete rewrite of the data file, checking all of the layouts and rewriting many of the scripts along with the following, which has been sent to FileMaker support who also cannot help me, saying they cannot reproduce the problem: SYSTEM ENVIRO…

I've read through the last 60 days of posts to this forum but I didn't see any similar threads. Forgive me if this is a repeat. Anyone else having issues with FMSA 9 crashing out about once per week? Last night, I experienced a problem where an hourly backup of Filemaker Databases on a Windows 2003 virtual server froze without any error messages. I was unable to stop the server either through the console or even through stopping the Filemaker Service directly (I have administrative rights to the machine.) And when I say I couldn't stop Filemaker Server, I mean the hosted databases remained open and I could move from record to record. Only a restart of the machine fixed the problem, and backups and operation appear to be running smoothly now. Has anyone else experienced a similar issue?

However when I try to upload the database into a separate folder I get an error telling me that the file already exist even though I was trying to add it into a different folder.
