Hiya Currently have 5 users using FMP 9. The main user opens the databases with sharing first (directly from a file share), whith the data stored on a central server. Then the subsequent users open the databses using the Open Remote option. As the first user is opening the files directly, they get the "xxx is a shared file. Opening a shared file directly from a remote volume will reduce performance and can affect reliability". Is it possible to disable this message? The reason for doing it this way is the main user travels with a laptop and Offline Files synchronizes the changes so they have (read only) access to the dbs at all times. If it's not …

Hi There, I have a solution on running on FMS which relies on a core front end database and several support databases. Is there a way I can make only the core front end visible on the "Open Remote" that users see from their client FMP? Many thanks, Richard.

Don't know if this is the right place to post it because it is a server and scripting question. I want to be able to send a scheduled email. My business is a security business that runs 24/7. I want to run a script that will export a PDF of the day's actions, attach it to an e-mail and send it. I see that most of that is NOT web compatible, so what I was thinking is to just run a "create a record" script in Server so when that record is created in FMP, then through a conditional if/then thing based on account would trigger the script that would email me. I know it's a convoluted way to go about, but that's all I have? So number one, it's not working ri…

I have Filemaker 10 Advanced server. I forgot my user ID so I deleted FM Server 10 and reinstalled it with the update. It is still asking for a user id and password. 1. Is there a way to retrieve this info? If not, is there a way to delete everything from the mac so that I can reinstall FM-10 server and create a new user id and password? I am using the mac to test software and then taking it to my office to a Mac Server on a PC. Thanks.

I just fininshed with the most recent updates to Leopard Server. When I try to start the FileMaker Admin Console, I get a TextEdit box labeled admin_console_webstart.jnlp. I do not get into the Admin Console. The IWP part of the server is working, but I cannot get to Admin part of FileMaker 10 Server Advanced.

Hi There Some further info.. See also my original post 06-24-09 03:44 AM - Post#334155. I have upgraded the Server and Desktop to the lastest versions of Mac OS . The Server has also been upgraded to the lastest OS and FMP I have done the recovery and actual rebuilt 1 of 37 databases (I don't really want to rebuild the other 36 databases) and the problem is still there even with a complete new file. When you go into some databases and some layouts FMP crashes... the desktop needs to be restarted by the power on off button (Mac restart command not working). If you don't restart the desktop Filemaker thinks you are using the same licence key. This is my Hard…

I've been developing my own FM database for some time now and am in need of updating my existing database with a newer version. Since the newer version was developed separately from the original I now need to update the original while keeping all my data intact. Since this is a common activity I was hoping that there would be an existing utility (or FM Server function) that would automate this process, but I've been told by one FM developer that there is no such thing. Is this true? If so, how do you update an existing database with a new version and keep all your data intact? Do you have to write a script?

Hi guys -- I did read the note that this subforum is only for FM server 7 but I can't find any other place to post it so I hope you can help an old FM server 5.5 user... I have an old iMac G3 OS 9.2 running on FileMaker server 5.5. This same iMac is used to keep files (excel, word, etc) that all office members have access to (via ethernet) and we not only read but edit and save such files. In 7+ years we have never experienced any trouble with this machine or FM server, however, it's getting old and it might die any moment now (the video card is known to just suddenly stop working on these machines), therefore, I would like to change to a newer G4 machine…

This one is probably getting old, but I have an ongoing problem with not being able to use Server Admin to contact the server, because it can't use ports 16000 and 16001. The port situation is out of my hands, I work for a very large corporation and I'm not in IT. For whatever reason, this web-based/Java/whatever it is implementation of FMP Server Admin will not work on our network. So far my solution has been to disconnect the server from the network, and then start server admin. This usually works, but it's immensely inconvenient because I have to go to a different floor of our building, get access to the server room, unlock the server, get onto it locally, turn of…

I wrote a Filter Script. It does a "perform Find" on an unstored calculated variable. I made a mini interface with conditions, and wrote a script to fill in the find box, and perform the find. This was working perfectly on my local machine, and I did a few tests on the server before, and thought it was working. But now that I am live, I noticed the exact same script doesn't work when it is on the server. I checked to see if there were any incompatible functions, but all seem fine. Has anyone had any "find" and "set field" scripts that stopped working after uploaded to the server? Am I supposed to do something to a script to make sure it works right on…

I'm not sure I understand how filemaker server works at all. I was hoping it could convert my databases into php files and I could just ftp them to a website. When I click 'edit server deployment' and get to step 5, 'configure machines' the 'Web server:' drop down list has no values. It appears that unless I can select a value, Filemaker Server will be useless. Can anyone advise me?

Hello. I was hoping to find a general forum for problems and I fear that I'll be reaching a very small audience by posting in this sub forum only... FMSA 8 running on Win2003. No problems except that SOME Intel based Macs running Mac OS 10.5.x and Filemaker Pro 7 can't see databases on the FMSA server. They can ping each other and Wireshark shows SOME activity between the two on Filemaker's ports, but the list of databases never appears. Attempts to connect to databases directly by specifying the fmnet: URL also fail. The clients would prefer not to upgrade to Filemaker Pro 9 if possible. Any ideas? I know that Filemaker, Inc no longer supports FM Pro 7. An…

I'm getting ready to upgrade our server to FM 10, and I'm curious if users connecting with the FM 9 client will be able to use the email functionality offered in FM 10. If not, does it error gracefully, or would I see bigger problems if a version 9 client user tried to run a script that used the email function? Thanks!

I need scheduled script (once per day) that will export all data to SQL table. This SQL table is source for additional requirements (web source, further analysis, etc.). I have tried to make it successful via FileMaker Server, but it seems that server can schedule only 'web compatible' scripts. And those scripts are only for some operations in database, but not for ANY kind of export or manipulation with external databases. I don't know why exists this limitations... Scheduling of scripts was main reason for using a new server version, but now it was worthless investment... Does anybody knows how to trigger (or schedule) a script that can execute SQL at sp…

I'm trying to use fm server 9 for the first time. when I launch the admin console, i just get "deployment assistant" in my task bar, but nothing comes up when i click on it; if i right click and click maximize, i just get a gray screen, and this is even if i wait an hour. i tried restarting my computer, but it didn't help. I'm really just trying to use the php conversion. Update: i'm thinking it could have to do with incompatibility with java 6. i'm trying to downgrade to java 5. Update: i don't think that helped Update: I need help. From what I've been reading, it seems pretty clear that the problem has to do with java. When I downgraded to version 5…

hi all, i have a funny problem with fm server 9 adv and odbc and iwp. I´m not sure if it is a odbc/iwp specific problem, so i post it here. exactly 3 weeks ago, i installed fm server 9a (the version from technet), with iwp switched on and odbc switched on. All worked fine and well for exactly three weeks. Then over night, no changes made, no patches installed, nothing reconfigured, i first have seen that i lost odbc connection to this server. I checked java (it is 6.7), i tried to deinstall fms 9a, reinstalled it, tried to install fms10a. No chance. No odbc connection, no iwp. All i can see is that odbc gets no connection, and iwp is down. When i try t…

Hi I have a calculated field that successfully returns a value when accessed via a script run on the client, however when the same script is run as a FM Server(8) script, it is not returning values. The calculated field is unstored and performs an aggregate function based on a TO relationship (simply, count the number of siblings of this parent). Again, when I run this on the client it works, but as soon as it runs on the server the calculated field returns nothing. FYI the script is running in one database and is accessing the parent table and sibling in another database. There are custom functions installed but these are not being referenced in the c…

Anyone had these issues, and hope Im in the right area.... 1) I had numerous Db (FMP8) hosted on Server 8 and have moved to FMP server 10 still using FMP8 on most of the desktops (with 1 copy of FMP10 for myself). On some of the Db when u access the LAYOUT mode and only some Layouts. FMP crashes. To stop FMP crashing, I access a different layout i then move the Layout that causes the crash to a different position using MANAGE LAYOUTS. this seems to stop the crashes 2) The following Error report is a FMP crash that occured trying to access another DB (the extract is from the Report to be sent to Apple) [color:green]Process: FileMaker Pro …

We have a two-machine config running on Windows Server 2003. All of a sudden when we login in with the FM Server Admin we get an "Admin Server Connection Error: Unknown error has occurred". We have to reboot. Then when we are logged in the WPE engine is not running and when we try to edit the config, it can not find the IP address. This all stopped working without any human intervention. The Server is running behind the firewall and the WPE runs in the DMZ. This setup has been running fine for about a year. We installed the latest version of Filemaker Server Advanced for Windows 2003 Server. Any ideas how to troubleshoot this? Thanks, Werner Net…

Hi all, on a regular basis I experience that I am unable to stop a FileMaker Server Adv. 10 on a Win 2003 server. It's just got one database open which contains 2 server side scripts that are performed every minute. When I try to stop the server the open database remains in the status of 'Is being closed' and nothing more happens. I also tried to stop the server side scripts before attempting to stop the whole server - still to no avail. When I restart the admin console the database still is 'being closed'. When trying to stop the server again it shows me an error message that an error occured trying to stop the server process. What can I do? I su…

I just upgraded my FileMaker Server 9 Advanced to FileMaker Server 10 on Mac OSX. On a different mac I opened safari and typed in the server ip, then :16000 in order to access the admin console. What am I missing? Thanks Joanna

Hi everyone, I am running server 10 and I am wondering if there is a way to bring up the history of a particular user. Simply meaning when they logged in and for how long they were in a particular database I imagine I can create a script to perform this action but I was wondering if there is anything built into server that had a log of some sort. Thanks Mike

Just did the latest updates to OS X 10.5 today, and now FileMaker Server Admin, on both FMSA9 and FMSA10, won't start any longer. I have been put in charge of finding out the behaviors of FM Server 9 under a UPS. After a power failure I have a script to close open files (fmsadmin close) then stop the server (fmsadmin stop) before the machine is shutdown. Problem I am having is when the system automatically comes back online the FM Database Server does not automatically resume. Is there a way to specify FM to automatically startup when the system starts up from a UPS Shutdown?

Hello, I hope somebody could help me. My client keep on dropping connection with the filemaker server 10 hosted on server 2008 sp2. So far what I logically could see is that in the log viewer it shows a warning message about client authentications failed on some of the databases and then a few events later the client drops and we get the message that the client is no longer responding; connection closed. The weird thing is that they are in these databases or have no issues opening them, they show up in the list for them to pick and the server is set only to show the databases that they have access to. I talked to FM today - they said I should do a test tonight -…

Can anyone explain the nature of the technical requirement to run FileMaker Server on Windows Vista or Server? FileMaker could not provide a satisfactory or even coherent answer to this inquiry. I am particularly puzzled by it supporting Server 2003 while not supporting XP? I am from a Unix background but interpreted Server 2003 to be Server XP? - No? - We don't run Windows Server in any form. The performance of the virtualized server running on Vista is absolutely horrendous. We retired all our Mac OS X based servers in the name of virtualization and really aren't looking to bring them back, but I am not sure there is a practical alternative.

I have an FMPSA running on an iMac with Leopard OS which hosts about 10 databases. I have had no problems connecting from various machines / configs until recently. I have two MacBook (mid2007) machines which have newly installed OS 10.5.7 and neither can see any local or remote hosts on filemaker 9v3. I cannot see any difference in these machines in the Network setup, to machines that CAN access the files from the same network. I can also ping the remote machines I am trying to connect to, so I know the path works fine. Everything else works - I can access the internet, login to a remote machine using AFP, email, etc.; it is just filemaker that does not work. …

We have a 1+ Gb file that was taking just over one minute to backup with no lock outs or perceived delays; after a recent anti virus renewal/upgrade and subsequent reboot our back ups now take 40 minutes or more and lock out clients. Some observations: I temporarily disabled our av ware (AVG 8.5) with no change to backup times. If I leave a RDP logon active (no logoff) during the backup time the db will always fail verification. It appears that a MS service running during an active logon causes the problem. It appears to me that since the latest reboot we have more MS services running that we don't need. I've stopped and disabled several services wit…

Am taking the plunge so to speak and have installed Filemaker Server 7 and the Web Publishing Engine on their own respective computers. I have read the myriad of documentation associated with this software and am in the process of doing some test DB conversions. When I connect to the FM Server 7 computer by clicking on "Open Remote" I get a list of "Hosts" which in my case is one. I click on the host name and a "View Databases Hosted by Filemaker Server" window pops up asking for an account name and password. We are planning on upgrading our FMS 9 Advanced installation to FMS 10 Advanced. We also have several Access databases and a number of tables within those databases that read and write data to the FMS databases using the SequeLink driver. My question is whether the upgrade process also requires us to do some work with the connections in the Access database. (As in, do we have to open the Access databases to recreate each of those connections?) I know the documentation discusses that the SequeLink driver provided with 10 is an upgrade from previous version, but I wasn't sure if is specifically an upgrade from what comes with FM9, as the SequeLink installer file wit…

I have Filemaker 9 server advanced running on 2 boxes. The main server has all the databases. It's set up to use a second server as the web server and web publishing engine. It says everything is fine. On the second server, I have IIS running and need to set up the PHP assistant options (I think). When I go to launch the Filemaker 9 server, it gives me the message: admin server connection error the admin console cannot establish a connection to the admin server When I try to use IWP and Php Site Assisstant, it works okay. So it's really just the communication from the webserver machine to the master that is an issue.

I have had an annoying problem for several months where the Admin Console stops working after a period of time. A restart always fixes this, but as the server is in constant use, I have to remember to do this out of hours and it's a pain. I also think I am running Java version J2SE 5.0. I have attached the console error log taken after attempting to launch the Admin Console. I have searched this forum, but h…

I'm really enjoying the fact that FMS 10 is able to do retention by timestamping consecutive backups. This surely saves a lot of time since before I needed to create dozens of schedules on FMS 9 to have an acceptable amount of retained backups. Now I'm trying to setup an automated shell command to perform rsync on the day's backup to an offsite server through ssh. The problem is that I need to have a predictable path to the backed up day's files so that my files properly do an incremental sync to the server without reuploading everything from scratch. Since each time the server performs a backup it appends the folder with a time stamp it will cause rsync to cre…

Hello, sorry if this thread is misplaced. I wasn't sure where else to put it. If I have a FM database that was created with FMP9, is there any way to use this DB as a stand alone read-only application? So if I have a DB and want 10 other users to have access to it, is there any way of making it readable by other users that do not have FMP installed? Sort of like exporting the DB as an application? Is there anything in the FM suite that can do this? It's a small database, and I'm looking for a way for 10 users to be able to read it without having to purchase FMP for all 10 of these users. Thanks for the advice.

Hey everyone; I have a client whose FM Server on 2003 SP 2 has crashed 3 times in the past week. In the first case, reportedly the free space on the C drive went from 20GB to zero. After the second instance we set up better reporting, with perfmon running in the background. Third incident was this morning. After FMS stopped responding, the following error was written to the log: "fmserver.exe, version 9.0.3.316, faulting module ntdll.dll, version 5.2.3790.3959, fault address 0x0002caa2." OK, simple question here. I just downloaded and installed FMSA 10. Or, at least I think I did. I purchased several items from FM and downloaded what was labeled to be FileMaker Server 10 Advanced, but the software doesn't say "Advanced" anywhere on any screen, not even in the About box. It does show a maximum connections of 999, so that seems like the Advanced version. Is the software not labeled "Advanced"?

(caution - super novice posting ahead) We're moving a small collection of standalone databases to a new FM10 Server. The upload goes fine, and the database itself works fine after updating the global file references. Our problem is with all the scripts in the database. All database references in scripts flip to 'unknown'. Is there something we missed in the upload? We have dozens of scripts, and we could fix them manually but if we just goofed up the upload or an easy global fix is available, I'd much rather go that route. The databases were all developed in FM8 and earlier on Mac clients. The server is 10 and running on a Windows Server. We're install…

Hello! Yesterday I uppgraded from FMS9 to FMS10 on a Win 2k3 server machine. I also updated the admin console on my client computer. When I try to create a new backup schema I get "Status: Invalid path" om the standard path "filewin:/C:/Program Files/FileMaker/FileMaker Server/Data/Backups/" I know the path is correct and I also noticed that the standard backup schema "Every day" at 23:00 worked. I have talked to the FileMaker support and they asked me to check the read/write privileges on the backup folder and the SYSTEM user has full control. I also tried to add a new user called fmsadmin and I put it in the group of administrators, but …

Hey there, Im totally new in FileMaker, was told to get it and im suppose to learn myself asap. Therefore Im still kinda blur with everything in it and still in the learning stage. I have FileMaker Server Advance on a machine running on Windows Server which serves as a dedicated server. And FileMaker Pro(trial version) on the other machine serves as a client. Problem: I cant seem to access the sample database hosted by FM Server from FM Pro. Tried Open Remote, Im able to see the host name, but there are no files available. Checked FM Server, status of the database is Normal. Hopefully all the experience users here can give me a tip or two on thi…

Hello, I am trying to enable access restrictions to certain IP addresses in Sever 10. I would like to have all local addresses 192.168.1.1 to 192.168.1.254 and one remote site address. It doesn't like wild cards like 192.168.1.* Is there a way to add a range of addresses? I can find any documentation.

Hi Guys, I have a client who is using FileMaker Server 8 with Pro 8 client quite successfully for the last couple of years. They need to upgrade their server, which will come with OS 10.5, so I am going to recommend FileMaker Server 10 as this is confirmed to work on that OS. I don't particularly want/need them to upgrade to FMPro 10, What is the potential of FileMaker Server 10 serving about 60 files for FMP 8 clients. Any help would be much appreciated on this. Many Thanks Jalz Many Thanks Jalz

Hi all, This is frustrating, because I am assuming there's a very simple answer to this. I am however, so far, unable to find it. I have several files on a client's FMS9, some of which are PHP enabled, and others that are not. I would expect any new file to have the same settings, but they don't. One of the new files also however needs PHP enabled so that I can run it through the PHP Assistant. I am however unable to toggle it on. Looked around, tried Help, etc. -- and nothing. All it says is to click the checkbox -- for PHP, which is already on, and running on a few of the hosted files -- but not all of them (see attached screenshot). Any ideas?

Morning all, I have some queries here about how Filemaker server actually communicates with the FM clients, and what is the main limitations on speed. We have been developing FM systems since FM v3 and are well versed in FM and its deployment. We have recently deployed a system that is used for around 100 clients based around the UK. The databases are hosted on a windows box with dual 10meg connections (fail safe). Now when on a LAN the system loads fairly instantly, but takes around 20 seconds when hosted. Fair enough, the system is extremely responsive once loaded. However there are some meaty reports that cannot be run over the WAN setup. Which got me thinki…

Me again First...thanks for the help with my last issue. I still have a few flies in the ointment to work out, but tv_kid got me on the right path at least. This should be a simple answer for any of you running Advanced Server 10. I managed to get IWP setup and running on the LAN and after a bit of tweaking its also accessable from the Internet. However, and maybe this is normal, but not what I expected..... it appears that the toolbar has gone back to the style of Filemaker 9 (on the side instead of across the top like it is when viewed by Filemaker Pro 10. Is this how it usually works, and is there a way to get the FM10 toolbar to show instead (bar on the side tak…

Hi I am about to implement a multi-user db on FM server 10 on Windows and I know that two things are certain: 1. I will have bugs in my coe 2: The users will want functions they had not told me about. this means updating the system moving forward. What tools (if any) are there to aid the migration of new/updated scripts into a 'running' system.

I'm posting this in the FMSA 9 form because I believe the issue stems from something in the FMSA 9 rather than ODBC itself. Here's the issue: I've set up FMSA and enabled ODBC and turned ODBC sharing on the server at one site without any issues, however I've done the same thing at another site and the ODBC cannot connect to the files that I need to connect to. One strange thing is that when I turn FMSA off and connect to a backed up file located in a backup folder the connection goes through without a problem. FM admin console is showing that ODBC in on, the files are set up for sharing ODBC and there are no erros showing in the event log. The event log shoes that xDBC…

I have performed searches on this issue within the forums and cannot seem to find any recent discussion on whether FileMaker began supporting this prior to the release of FMS 10. I have also reviewed the FM site in an attempt to find tech specs on FMS 9. Did FM ever begin supporting FMS 9 on Windows 2008? Your assistance is greatly appreciated.

I visited a client for the first time today. They're using FM7 and have a single table, non-relational, database. The have a "non-traditional" FM sharing set up. The file lives on a server computer. When a user wants to open the file, they first check to see if it's already been opened by another user (via Open Remote...Local Hosts). If no user is serving the file, then they navigate to the server computer and open the file and become the host. I'm pretty sure this is a recipe for disaster, but can someone confirm that for me and why, with FMP or KB or other references? Thanks, DJ

My company has offices in Los Angeles and Shanghai, China and in early 2006 I built a database to coordinate communication between our two offices. I initially hosted the database with Datrium, and everything was fine for about a year. The log in from China was always slow, but usable, and everything was mostly okay till early '07. Then the speeds from China started to get really slow, and the most debilitating problem was that it would take 20-30 minutes to log in and the connection would frequently cut off for no reason. I did a ping test and found that the speed from China was 500-600ms - pretty slow. So I moved our database onto Point in Space servers, where …

I've just installed FMSA 10 on Windows 2K3. When I try to run the server admin assistant (e.g. http://localhost:16000) I get the response "FileMaker Server has encountered an error: The server encountered an internal error () that prevented it from fulfilling this request." Ports 16000, 16001 and 5003 are open on the firewall, and I've also tried turning the firewall and antivirus off. I've tried repairing and even reinstalling the FMSA, all without success. However, databases are being served successfully, and I can use the fmsadmin command-line tool to do basic admin tasks. Is this a problem with JRE? I have the current version installed (v6_13). Hardware/Software: Server: FMS 9.0.1 on G4 Xserve OS X 10.4.11 - IP 192.168.100.3 My system: FMPA 9.0.3 on MacBook Pro OS X 10.5.6 Plus: FMP 9.0.x on various computers in two offices, both Mac and PC. Hello, I have a solution that incorporates a practice database that users go into to learn and do what if kinds of things. The way it works is I backup the real database and copy it over to the practice database. This probably isn't a problem with FMServer itself but since it involves multiple users in a client-server relationship I thought I'd post it here... I have found that FMPro 10 clients have a buggy behavior if multiple users run the client on the same machine. The typical scenario is that user is accessing the Server but is not finished and leaves the client running. A second user comes along to the shared machine and, not wanting to disturb the first person's work, utilizes the 'fast user switching' feature of Mac OS X to login without logging out the first user. The second user can access the same database but all error messages appear as blank dialogue …

I recently came across a license conflict problem that reinforced to me the importance of properly uninstalling FMS software when migrating to a new device. After having preflighted my database using FMS 10 on a desktop Mac I shut down this server and tossed the /Library/Filemaker Server folder into the trash (not good). After this FMS was installed on a second dedicated server and ran fine until the day that I restarted my desktop machine. Apparently FMS demon automatically restarted on the desktop machine, generating a license conflict. The server abruptly shut down and refused to restart. The solution was to kill the Filemaker server processes on the desk…

Morning all: I have run into a head scratcher here, and I'm hoping that someone here has seen this before. I am trying to accomplish a close of all hosted databases on my Server 9 Advanced (Windows 2003) through the use of command line fmsadmin commands. I have a simple batch file (put into the datascripts folder on my server) which uses the following command: fmsadmin CLOSE -y -u user -p pass This should, in theory, close all hosted files. I am triggering this through the FM Server schedules. The batch runs fine through the scheduler, however, it does not close the files, nor does it error out. If I run manually through the command prompt by…

Greetings all, [color:gray]This is only really relevant to those hosting files in excess of 200-300MB at a guess... where back up time begins to become an issue. I'm posting because of a TechNet meeting today in the UK, where a guy lecturing on FMS10 shared that it still locks users out of files, and for one client running a 1.2GB file 40 users were being locked out (on a windows hosted solution he admitted!) for 4 minutes at a time during back up. His solution was to use FMDataGuard to creat roll forward logfiles etc. and just do one file back up at night when system not in use. This came to me as a bit of a disappointment, as the heralded server back u…
