  1. Hi. I need help in customizing my file so that when I'm entering data in the Browse mode, I can see which box is active as I tab from box to box. Currently, it is a barely noticable black outline (which doesn't help because my boxes already have a black border. Is there a way to have the cursor flash in red and faster? perhaps a highlight of the entire field?

  2. I don't know what it's called when you embed the contents from a field in text without a textfield. I hope everyone knows what <> is talking about. That thing. Anyway, when you don't know what it's called, it's very hard to search for it, but my problem is this. I'm showing results from a timestamp field in this manner. Is it possible to specify the formatting of it in this manner? It seems to display in DD/MM/YY HH:MM:SS AM, but if I just want it DD/MM HHMM, how would I do it?

  3. I created a series of files on a Mac; I then transferred the files to a PC. I expected to have color differences, but I did not expect that the printed output from several layouts would have all kinds of spacing problems. When I looked at the layouts on screen, they appeared to look OK; but when I printed them the elements of the layouts hsd shifted severely. In order to get them to print correctly I had to move the elements around. This involved a lot of cut and try time and paper, but eventually I got them so they print OK. HOWEVER, now they look all cockeyed on screen. What causes this, and is there a way to fix it? TIA

  5. Hello folks, I'm developing a simple relational database as a student assistant on my college campus. I have a database set up with 4 tables. In short, its for a disciplinary action department on the campus. everything stems from the incident tables. One incident can have one or many charges, and one or many sanctions. From a layout perspective, I can't figure out how to allow input for multiple charges and multiple sanctions. And then search for an incident and have it display those multiple charges and sanctions. Does anyone have experience with a situation like this, or am i making any sense? ;)

    I am creating a layout which is a letter. Most of the letter is fixed text but part of it is variable text entered by the user. I never know how long the variable text will be. I have tried every combination of sliding and merging that I can think of to get the fixed text to merge with the variable text but I don't know how to get text (variable or fixed) to wrap to the next line (or slide up and merge with the previous line) if it does not fit on the current line. Can anybody help? I have been working on this for days and I'm out of ideas. I'm relatively new to FileMaker so I am hoping someone can clue me in on what I am missing. Thanks.

I keep a small database in FM8.5 of my students, of course some students my have a sibling in my class as well. On my layout I have all the general information for a student as well as the name of a related student. What I would like to be able to do is click a button of the related student and be taken to that student’s record.     Hi Folks, I have a problem with trying to close a report window shown to a user in a runtime solution because the X is dimmed out. Apparantly you can't close windows in Runtime solutions, so to fix it I will just pause the script running the report, then when the user hits the continue button I will continue the script and close the window. That's all fine, but how can I hide the Cancel button from the status area so the user doesn't invariably hit that and muck everything up ? Any ideas ? Thanks heaps Regards Paul

What I'm trying to do is report sales by quarters and months with the following criteria: Invoices must list all line items. Monthly and quarterly grand totals must be broken into line item sales, taxes and shipping. As you may see from my example, everything works except the monthly and quarterly tax and shipping grand totals that appear in the trailing subsummary parts.     I apologize if this has been asked and answered but I can't find anything in the archives by a search using the title of this post as my criteria. It seems fairly random and I have not been able to nail this down, but sometimes when I am in FileMaker my screen will flicker and roll after running a script or manually changing layouts. Sometimes it will roll several dozen times. It looks almost like a looping script is running in slow motion and the "freeze window" script step has not been set.     Good Morning everyone, Is there a wqay to open a "New Window" using that script step without UNDOCKING the window you are starting from? I have a layout that is maxing out the screen real estate so I want a user to be able to call a "floating" button for information that is only required sometimes. However, when I use the "New Window" script step it undocks the original window giving me an undesired result.   19. I have a database with 2 tables. Both tables have a related field called "match". Table A keeps track of the dimensions associated with individual kitchen cabinets that my company produces. Table B keeps track of how many doors each individual cabinet has. The total quantity for all of cabinet doors is kept track of with a summary field that totals the individual doors from each cabinet. I have a table for hardware, clients, tickets, etc. Instead of using the "built-in" tabs feature in my layout for hardware, I'd rather choose from a drop down menu what kind of hardware it is (ie, computer, display, printer, router, etc). Once the "kind" of hardware is selected from the drop down menu, I'd like the appropriate layout to appear.     I see a big difference in the way Macs and PCs handle 'go to layout' commands and wonder if there's something I can do. I have scripts that visit multiple layouts while processing the data. On the MAC, only the 'Original' layout shows on the user's screen while all the 'go to's take place 'behind the scenes'. When I run the same scripts on a PC, each of the layouts gets displayed while the script is processing data on that layout. It creates a very herky-jerky, unacceptable, user interface. Short of getting all my users to buy MACs (not very likely), how can I control the undesired layout displays while the script is processing on the PCs? TIA

  26. I apologise if this has been asked before, I have been searching for hours and I have read the FM help. (over and over and over...) Basically I have a layout with a description which will need (occasionally) 4 pages of text with a total at the bottom. Since the text is of variable length I have stretched it to the maximum that it will need (as suggested in FM help) and used the sliding/printing option to shrink. Only when this happens it leaves 4 blank pages after the record. I tried adjusting the part 'body' option which removed the blank pages but when text was entered beyond one page it didn't print the extra pages either. So I'm not sure what I'm doing …

    I've got a portal set up that is inheriting the text colours from the related fields I'm dislaying. Resetting the portal field's text colour doesn't work - the text format for the field says it's already black (rather than colour-coded like the corresponding fields in the related file). I have created a one-to-many relationship and I now would like both, the data + the related data, to be displayed not only in the "view as a list" view, but also in the "view as a table" view. Both views are in the browse mode. If I switch to table view, Filemaker only shows one related field with one value.   30. I have been using FM7 for some time and have just upgraded to FM 8.5 advanced. It seems in FM7 you can only select a colour theme when creating a new layout and not superimpose one on an existing one- can anybody tell me if 8.5 can do that - I know I can manually change the colours in the header/body/footer. I have checked in the (downloaded) 8.5 documentation and I can find no mention of it. Any help would be great

    Hi, I have set up an invoice layout, with each record having a few fields that repeat 12 times. However, often the number of fields doesn't reach this number, so i am left with a lot of blank space between each record. Is there any way to solve this problem ie so that the body section shrinks if the repetitions do not reach the max. The closest I've come is to just make multiple reports with different numbers of repetitions and then when it comes to printing the script can choose the best one. any ideas? many thanks

    Hi, I have a file that is behaving strangely. When changing the view between Form and List modes, either manually or through a script, the program always asks "Do you wish to save this change with layout?" Under Preferences/Layout: "Save changes automatically (do not ask)" is checked. This happens only when the file is opened from server, when opened locally there is no question.     Hello, Well I’m stuck again. I am still working on my “Victim” database here at work and have a question about photos. I have an area with a container for the victim’s photo. What I want to do is have the container that is not used for a victim’s photo default to a “No Photo” image in the container. I have the “No Photo” JPEG constructed, but I do not know how to make the Photo Container default to this image. Hopefully to clarify: when a new victim record is created, the photo container automatically shows my “No Photo” JPEG until the user adds a photo of the victim to that container. Can this be done?   63. For months I've been trying to come up with a method to 'hide' the first field in a value list after it has been selected. I want to use a value list that draws from a table and stores the key field while always and ONLY displaying the 2nd field. For example, I have a table called reps that has a rep_id field, and a rep_fullname field. On an order table's layout, I have a field for 'rep' which is a value list that draws from the reps table. New here - quick question which I'm sure is asked a lot, but I tried searching under "list view wrap" "list view row height" and a bunch of other queries, but can't find the answer: Is there a way to set up a layout so that in list view, if the contents of a field are longer than the column permits, the field displayed/printed will automatically get as tall as it needs to to accomodate the data?     I am not sure if this is where I should post this question but.... I have a script that finds the current events in a db (FM 8.5). Current meaning active events that haven't happened yet. The layout I view these events is in list form and I would like to be able to quickly spot the events that share the same date by having their displayed fields ( Artist, Venue, Start date, End date, and Engineer status) backgrounds change from white to a color. If anyone here has any ideas on how to do this I'd appreciate it. Chris

    Hi I have a date field in the header section of a report format that is not printing, but can be seen in both Browse and Preview mode. In the header section in Browse mode there are buttons, that are not printed, and a title field that is printed in the finished report. These are set appropriately. When it comes to the print out there is no date just the outline of the field. I have checked the font colour, background colour, sliding/printing settings, but can't seem to find the reasons for the problem. Any help is gratefully received Thanks :)

    FMP 8.0v3 Avery 5160 address labels 2.625" x 1.0" The automatically-generated layout for Avery 5160 is only printing 9 rows of labels per page. Should be 10. I'm totally confused by how to configure. The top left corner of the top left label is at 0.5" from the top and 0.375" from the left (of the physical 8.5x11 sheet). Each 2-5/8" x 1" label is separated from the next by a 0.125" gutter horizontally and a 0.0" space vertically. The automatically-provided layout for 5160 just looks wrong: for one thing it contains a header part that's 0.236" tall. Rather than creating separate confidential and nonconfidential fields for each piece of info, I was hoping it might be possible to have a checkbox for fields that can be activated when the info is confidential. Recently I needed to work on a layout (add a few fields to the layout, shift some things around). I created a duplicate of an existing layout, named "Existing Layout Copy", and made my changes to my copy of the layout (while the dbase was hosted).   74. In searching the forum I see the recommended solution to making a multi page cover page is to drag the Title Header down past one page tall. I've dragged and dragged until now it's down to 46 inches. My cover letter text cuts off mid line at the bottom of page 1, and the body of the report starts at the top of page 2. Half the cover letter is cut off. Do I need to drag it further? or am I making a different mistake (margins perhaps?)? The multi page body of the report works fine. I've not tried the multi page bottom material of the report yet.

I have, what is in essence, a real newb question - how to change the focus order of the fields during data entry? It works very well for our purposes, and has been highly customized to make our lives easy (this is the truly magical benefit of FileMaker Pro).   82. Hi, I'm struggling with the fundamentals. I've got a layout that works for me but I can't find the solution for my next step. I want to make a nice-looking cover sheet which will be the first thing you see when you open up the PDF export of the layout. I can't work out what I need -- is it a new record that I then re-design, or is it a layout part of some kind?     Hi I have produced a layout formating a report for printing. Users add info to the two columns and they change the size of the column so there is not too much white space (as and if required). Unfortunately the resize option is not working for the user. I have checked the tick box for resizing columns, checked the priviledges of the individual, checked the page margins, but the user still has no access to resizing the column part of the layout. Am I missing something here? The full access user is able to resize columns in Browse mode but other users are unable to. Thanks for any guidance

Simple question: When I have a multiple layouts with the same perfectly-aligned menu buttons, etc. at the top, and I switch among them in "Browse" mode, the transitions between layouts are completely smooth. There is no "bounce" of objects left-right or up-down. However, when I use the same perfectly-aligned menu buttons (and entire layout for that matter) in a layout that is set to List View only, when I nav to that layout, a vertical white line perhaps 3 to 5 pixels wide appears, from the very top to the very bottom of the layout.     Just wondering, what I am calling dynamic layout. I mean, when you sort records usually for printing purpose we do configure a special layout with fields we would want included. This layout has sub-summary part and also a trailing grand summary, and of course head and footer. Lets supose we have product field named A and category product field named B. It is normal to want reports based on field A and another based on B. Is it possible to have a single layout for both reports?     I have an entry layout with some numeric foreign key fields: Location, Client, Worker. How can I make it easy for users to enter the correct numeric key? Currently, I have value lists showing the key and the text name and drop down menus using those value lists but that isn't completely satisfactory.   91. Hi, I was wondering if this is possible: I have a field for a case number. I want to start the number off with the year and then an incremental number following it. I want to make the case number prefix (the current year) change with each New Year.     So I have searched the forum for answers and still can not find something that works. I have a print layout that contains a header, leading sub-summery, body, trailing sub-summery and footer. There is one row of fields in the body and when printed it should look like a spread sheet. The fields are two lines tall and are set for sliding when printing. I would like to have vertical lines between the fields in the body. I have tried to draw in lines and set the left and right borders but nothing works right. Anyone have any ideas?

    Hi All, I have two databases, within one is a value list that provides preset timings for the start of a booking in the format 10:00 etc. This just fixes the start of the booking at half hour intervals. When i try and link to this value list from the second database, the link is good but the list has added and extra :00 ( i guess seconds indication) to the value list. ie i now get 10:00:00. I have tried all the different formatting options which only seem to affect the data after you have chosen the relevant option from the value list.   99. Ok, this seems like it would be so simple. I have a tab with different buttons on it to signify different searches. I have these buttons named through the Object window. I have done this so I can pass the Object Name, using Get(ActiveLayoutObjectName), through a script parameter. The object name would then be used as a search criteria that would be inserted in the script by the script step Insert Calculated Result. I am trying this solution so that I might only create on script for all the searches. I want to be able to produce a report (which I already have constructed) with the student’s information on it as well as one of the photos I select from the three.
