Our company has utilized FM for over a decade, we are an organization that is scattered throughout Southern CA. They have always deployed/produced FM for remote users over a leased line (Frame Relay -- now MPLS) via Citrix. Which I believe was the recomended way on FM Pro 6 and lower. We are now on FM Pro 11 with FM 10 Server Advanced. We are trying to utilize "Containers" in our FM Solution and streamline a process for our workflow. Well we need it to talk to an applicaton that is installed locally on the clients and not on the Terminal/Citrix Servers. So we have one remote site with about 10 remote users and installed FMPro 11 locally on their workstations and st…

Hello there, I'm having trouble making a script run on my server. The server runs through the script without error, but it doesn't do anything. When running the script on the client, everything runs as expected. Here are some info about the script : - The script runs on File A. - The script must modify a records in a related table on File B. - File A and File B are on the server. Here is a printscreen of the script : BTW where can I find the things to know about server scripting? Example : You need a counter in a loop otherwise the script will return an error.

Hello All I am hosting some files on FM Server 11. I can access all files from FM 11, pro and advanced. I have other computers still running FM Pro 10, and some files are missing from the list in the open remote dialog. I have checked the sharing, and the missing ones are setup the same as the ones that are there. What is going on? Gil

I'm developing a bigger application and the idea is to get it run multi-user between 6-7 people. I was thinking on getting Filemaker Server on a designated computer on my network to host the data file, and give each user the application files he needs on his local drive. I just was confronted with scripts that don't run on the server version according to script editor. I have since search but not found clear answers on: - Does this apply to my applications that run each individual on the clients computers even though they are using the data on the server? - Does this apply only to applications run from the server on the server? - I thought the true need of …

I have finally gotten some time to see if there is a way to use what appears to be a way to notify clients that an update is available from their client, AND have FileMaker Server send the update to them for installation. It would appear that each client has a preference where a plug-in to auto update can be checked off, but the configure button is greyed out. Also, maybe I need a Plug-in on the server side to make this work, but cannot find one in the files I have for installation. Is there such a thing, and where is this plug-in. Any help would be appreciated.

Hi Forum! I have 2 Questions about authentication please. (1) I have three files hosted on an FM Server, A, B and C. All three files use External Authentication with the Domain Server. There are 2 groups of users in the Active Directory and both are correctly defined in each of the three FM Files: fmsadmin and fmsusers. The external Authentication works fine. As an identified Windows User, I open file A and that opens file B and C and it works fine, no passwords are asked, users are in the files with the right privelege set. It works for all users. Only; In the LOG of FM Server I get a funny message when the Computer tries to open …

Hi two seperate questions. Q1: I have a filemaker 8.5 Server. Im upgrading its licence to v11.0 license. I want to use a new second computer for the 11.0 version. Q: Can I install the new 11.0 alongside the old 8.5 Server on the same Network without getting a serial number clash on both and hence both servers not working? (8.5 Server = win2003 Server, 11.0 Server= win2008r2 Server). In other words does an 8.5 serial number clash with a 11.0 serial number from the same licence? The plan is of course to switch off the 8.5 Server after the sucessful install of the new server. Q2: I have a script that assigns some variables and loops through some records, its q…

We are using FMS 9... I am looking for the setting to remove select databases from the list of dbs that comes up when users access our open remote list. I know its possible as we have some already absent from the list but I can't find the setting. Just looking to tidy up the visible list due to a number of disused dbs that need to exist but don't need visibility. Thanks.

Does anyone know what this message means? I'm running Server 9 with email notifications to be sent when there's a failure or warning. I keep getting emails from the server saying "FMServer Warning 661 Client "so and so" authentication failed on database. When I ask the client if they're having trouble logging in or if they misspelled the account name or password, they say no, that they're not having any problems at all. Thanks in advance!

I keep getting error 212 (invalid user account/password) when trying to run an import script, server side, on a hosted file. A bit of background: I have 2 hosted files, a Main Data file and a Data Import file. I have a server side script sequence to automatically import the data from Data Import to the Main Data file. A system script pauses the Data Import file, copies it to the Server Documents folder, and the resumes the file prior to executing the FM Script. The FM script in the Main Data file then imports data from various tables in the Data Import file into other tables in the Main Data file. The script runs perfectly if I manually execute it but it…

Trying to install FMS 8 on Windows 2003 Enterprise, we get an error of openssl.exe and MMC crash. The Admin does'nt connect with server and services can't start manually. The same on Windows 2003 R2 Standard. No solutions on forums. In Standard Windows 2003 installation and looking on the FileMaker Server folder, I found 3 files with wrong extensions. These are: server.pem root.pem FMStrs.dls I changed the extension to this files to dll server.dll root.dll FMStrs.dll After this and rebooting the server machine, the conecction was OK. Tomorrow i'll try this solution on Enterprise version of windows. Hope this helps someone.

A client of ours is running with 8-10 seats on v11 and FMS v11 on OSX. At random points during the day the system bogs down with all operators left to sit there with spinning beach balls for a number of minutes. FM doesn't crash. No data is lost. It is just that the system hangs. In a busy environment its untenable. \ The first step that we took was to upgrade the server hardware and it now has plenty of RAM and a solid state drive etc. I don't suspect the hardware. Also, when a bog down is happening operators are able to pull down web pages etc at a normal speed, so I'm not inclined to suspect the network. If I have the activity monitor up on the s…

This is a joint message from Wim Decorte and Steven H. Blackwell. We have been seeing a number of reports that indicate there is considerable confusion about the new server side import and export capabilities of FileMaker® Server 10 and FileMaker® Server 10 Advanced. We want to assist developers by clarifying how this new feature is supposed to work. First and foremost, there are only 2 folders that FileMaker Server can use to export to or import from: 1. the Documents Folder in the root level of FileMaker Server. 2. A temporary folder created (and deleted) for the instance of the script schedule This apparent limitation addresses permissions issues in…

It looks like this FMP10 server has fallen victim to the Java Update, so I am unable to fully manage the server. In particular, I need to change the SMTP Host settings as the ISP Host settings have changed - one of the databases generates eMail automatically, er well it used to... Is this possible to do via the Command Line Interface? I can't see an obvious command that would allow me to define or change this. If this isn't possible, how do I install just the necessary Java components of the Admin Console on another computer which hasn't got the Jave 'update' issue. If I run the server installation, it seems to want to install everything and there is no obviou…

We have a big problem with our clients unable to connect to FM Server v11 after about an hour of use. When this occurs, multiple iterations of the users appear in the Administrator panel. Sometimes these users can be forcibly disconnected, other times they cannot. The only way we have found to remedy the problem is through a reboot of the server, which is not practical since we deploying in public areas for time limited applications. Even then, the IPads are immediately seeking reconnection and the problem sometimes repeats almost immediately after the server reboot. The problem seems to originate with iPad connections. The iPads only directly access one of two h…

I have some rudimentary questions about what a server can & cannot do for my cabinet shop. I currently operate six databases that are hosted on a web server that I rent access to. For $80 a month I could theoretically host up to 50 databases with up to 5 simultaneous users at a time. I would like to add a half dozen client stations to my shop so need to revisit how best to do this. One of the big uses for this server is to pass out tasks and manage documents. We currently imbed PDF drawings in a container field. The major weakspot to embedding is that we cannot archive old drawings here. After we get more than about 30 records with embedded do…

I've been trying to decide whether to purchase Filemaker Server or FMS Advanced and it looks like I'll be basing my decision on how much I can do with the PHP Site Assistant. Is it possible to upload pictures to container fields when working with a database in a PHP generated site? I would test it myself on my trial version, but I'm currently having issues with "ERROR: 7 - Running out of Memory" (I'd love some help with that too, by the way). Also, I would imagine that one could use plugins and his/her own knowledge of PHP to modify the website after it is generated (add new pages, move things around, etc.), right? I'm getting comfortable with the SuperContainer plugin fo…

I am having some trouble with one particular computer. This is a Windows 7 computer, that is using File Maker Pro Advanced. A little background. My FM 11 server is slow. Very slow. too many things going on on this poor machine at the same time. * * * * FM server has a huge load connecting to a MySQL external data source and going back and forth making native queries slow. My question becomes: Is there a way to load balance FileMaker server acroos 2 separate machines, in order for the one machine to run the SQL querries back and forth, while the other serves the native Filemaker databases? And than just have the 2 FM servers update each others records? would that help removing the load from the "main" server? I have already set up, in the past, a worker and master s…

Hello, We just got a new desktop in today and it has AVG antivirus on it, it is the business version. I have never heard of AVG but anyway, it is blocking access to our FileMaker server hosted files. Last week we built an opener from a demo on the boards and it works just fine on all our other pcs, we have ESET (or NOD 32 I do not know which they go by)on those. When you run the opener on the new desktop with AVG it will not show the FMS hosted files. We thought it was the opener but one of the teachers said it may be the firewall, so we figured out how to turn it off and it worked like a charm, the hosted files show up when the opener runs. I've been using FM for over 10 years. I'm pretty familiar with many of its functions, but I know nearly nothing about sharing. I want to set up a way to share a database, hosted on my computer, with multiple users (about 5 users) who are on DIFFERENT local networks in different countries. I could probably figure this out via trial and error, but I want to set it up right. I also looked into FM Server, but it doesn't explicitly say it can share across different networks. Hi there, Another poser for everyone, especially the usual angels out there: I’m running a script which is quite simple and works fine on my laptop under FM11 Pro. It involves the export of a field created by the ValueListItems command in one FM11 .fp7 file to a comma delimited .txt file, and the opening of another FM11 .fp7 file which imports records from that .txt file, performing some minor auto-enter calculations during the import. It’s a simple, straightforward operation that works fine and only takes between 10 and 20 seconds on my laptop, which was the pc used to design the dbases and associated scripts. My problem arises when this script is run b…

Well, we've had Version 11 running for over a year. Been wonderful. However, today it has "crashed" twice. The first shutdown referenced a corrupt temporary file. The second didn't reference anything. It just closed all files & disconnected everybody. Admin Console: 11.0.2.217. So, it isn't the latest. However, it has never caused any problems before. Server Specs: Host Server – Windows Server 2008 R2 Guest Server – Windows Server 2003 SP2 Hypervisor – Microsoft Hyper-V Nothing new installed recently. This is not good. I'm looking, but I haven't seen any posts related.

I have developed a database that, PM, the IT person at the college where I teach has finally mounted on our server. He is generally very knowledgeable about IT matters but is a relative neophyte as far as Filemaker goes. I know very little about Filemaker server and don't have any direct access to the server in any case. PM person created a rudimentary arrangement for me to upload and download files to and from the server, so that I can import data into the copy of the database that I develop on my own computer before putting it back up on the server. I have three questions. I would be very grateful for any insight: (1) Since going up on the server I and other u…

Hello everyone, it has been a while since I have had to ask a question, been lurking and learning, but we have started playing around with a FM server and I have a question about shutting down a server with UPS software. If the battery runs down, the software that comes with our UPS will do a shutdown of our server. If the UPS shuts down the server is that a bad thing? I would think that the FM server software is still running and needs to be stopped before the shutdown. Thanks again for the help from this forum! Michelle

In my database I have a small script that acts as an activitiy log, whereby as each user moves to and from particular screens or specific record activity, a new record is written to one of the tables with the user's login name, time & date, etc. It works great... except... (theres always a but) - the time recorded in the table is that of the client's workstation - which is fine except for several clients are operating in different timezones so the order of the log gets out of whack. I have considerded a few options to get around this, but none will work satisfactorily. They included having a table that contains the timezone of that user - but they may c…

I know I've seen this, but can't find it now.... How do the script steps Allow User Abort[] and Set Error Capture[] affect the running of server side scripts? I have a script that I want to continue to run if it encounters an error and I want to capture the error. Thanks!

Hey Community, FileMaker Server 11 Advanced (11.0.2.217) installed and running live databases on Mac OS X Server 10.5.8. I recently ran some software updates on the server, including some Java updates, and that seems to have killed the ability to launch the FMS Java console. I am getting the notorious "Unable to launch the application." error message. It sounded like an FMS update addresses this issue (I have version 11.0.3.309 downloaded and waiting) but the updater, naturally, won't install if FMS is running (which it does on startup). So my normal method for closing databases safely has been denied me. Catch-22. In trying to solve this problem, I dis…

Hello, How Can I get the 'No. of Connected Clients' for a specified database file name using FileMaker Server's Command Line commands? i.e. I need to get the values of last column (which is "Clients") of "Databases" section of Admin Console. Please let me know is there any other command (other than "fmsadmin list clients -s -u <<username>> -p <<password>>" command)to get the above result? Thanks and Regards, Trupti

FileMaker Server Admin Console has stopped communicating with FMServer 10 on a remote Mac Mini 1.87Ghz Intel Dual Core running OS 10.5.8. Since April 11, it has not written a log entry, or run any of the automatic nightly or weekly schedules. The files are still being served, except that yesterday service stopped unexplainedly for two hours, and spontaneously returned. I cannot currently send a message to users, or close a file or files, or run a backup schedule, or Stop Database Server. I've put the app in the trash and re-downloaded it from http:localdisk:16000, to no avail. I've tried downloading a copy to a local machine using http://serveripnumber:16000, wit…

Hello, first post here. I did a search and didn't an answer. I am deploying FM10 server on a Win 2003 Std Server. The clients are FMP10 clients on Win XP. They have fast machines and at least 2GB RAM. When they open the FMP client, it takes almost a full minute or more to launch. Then trying to open a remote DB takes even longer. Just maximizing the window after it does finally open takes an incredibly long time. I am on a Vista machine and it seems to be running well on this machine. But I wanted to get some experience input from the community. What would you think the problem is? Are there known performance issues with FMP10 and WinXP? Anyone might …

I have an iMac that is holding the main file and also sharing that folder so the laptop I have can access the file. When I add new records to the file from the laptop, the laptop can see the new records, but the iMac does not. I also have another file that is being hosted on the iDisk and I can access that through a few other machines and I can update the file, but when the other users do so, it tends to corrupt the database and I keep losing records. I don't know if these issues are separate or related. Any suggestions to remedy this would be greatly appreciated. The budget does not allow for server or for upgrades.

I'm reading through FileMaker Server 10 Guide to Updating Plug-ins and the document states that a sample file called AutoUpdatePlugin.fp7 is installed on the server. However, the only file I have pre-installed on FMPS is FMServer_Sample.fp7. I'm new to AutoUpdate and I need some help writing a script to check for the plugin. Thanks.

We are running FMS 10 on a wired LAN. All machines are Mac running v10. For some reason FMS is not showing up as a local host on their network. They are able to access their system remotely, but for some reason not locally. Is this a port issue on their router? Any suggestions? Thanks in advance.

I am at the present time nibbling my way into the concepts of filemaker server. This is very new to me so some of these questions will be pretty basic. I appreciate your forbearance. We currently have some databases hosted on a web based server. We pay $80 a month for this service and have fairly limited access. We use this as a way to communicate with my cabinet shop. These databases are used for task management. We embed PDF files (and occasionally jpegs) into container fields. These embedded files explain details about the cabinets we are building. As soon as the information has been harvested we typically delete the record because we don'…

Sorry for the noob questions, but I can't seem to find any proper answers. I am running Filemaker Server Advanced 9 and want to share certain databases with my San Diego office so they can access data. I turned on the server and all looks well, but when I view my server's IP address I only see the Apache default page. From within my own network, what URL should I be using to bring up my databases in a web interface or testing purposes? Something similar to [my server's local IP]:16000 but different since that's for the admin.

Hello all, I have almost this exact same problem http://fmforums.com/forum/topic/75186-license-conflict-only-on-server-hosted-file/ FM server 11 fully updated, all my Vers. 11 clients can connect but Ver. 10 clients allways get the maximum number of users error message. I have tried all the usual things as well as everything mentioned in the above post, has anyone else experienced this and how did they resolve it thanks. Vincent Update: It happen to Vers. 10 and 11, some clients always get the error others do not.

I have an ongoing issue with a FileMaker 11 Server (Mac OS). Every 4-6 weeks searches ( ie Finds ) on the database quit working properly. If you are in a table for data stored in the table it works fine, however if you are searching for data stored in a related table or searching a calculation that uses related data the Find returns bad results. The issue presents itself when running Finds from a client or directly on the FMS using server side scripts. The temporary fix for this is to close the database, stop the database server and then restart the database server. The issue goes away for awhile but comes back after several weeks. The whole server does not…

Hi! i am running FMS on SBS_2008 and have XP, Win7 and MacOS_10.6.7 clients attaching to it. Every now and then it seems to happen, that records, generated on a client, do not get handed over to the Server, or at least, they do not gest stored. this is not only dangerous, as information might get lost, but it undermines the trust-level in the it. i have no clue of where to start looking, so if anybody could come up with an idea of where to start looking, this would be highly appreciated! thx a lot, philipp

I noticed there is many security fixes so I am keen to update. I did notice that AFP volume paths had changed ...I had a lot of trouble with this last update to os x 10.6. I found my volume paths in robot scripts all seemed to change. I hope they will not change again. Any experiences and advice here welcome Regards, Lance

Hi there, Im running FM 11 Server with various users connecting to it. I want to create a shared folder on my server into which users can create PDF's using a script attached to a button. However, I want the folder to be Read Only to users and only allow Filemaker to have Full Control over the folder. My question is, when a user clicks the button for Filemaker to create the PDF in the shared folder, does the OS use Filemaker Server (and thus Full Control) as the user or will the individual user that creates the doc (and thus Read Only) be used as authentication against the shared folders user privileges?

Fairly new to Filemaker and the forums here, so please cut me some slack if this question is in the wrong spot or shows how new I am to Filemaker. Any help is appreciated. We run Filemaker Server 11 and, often, when we run into a situation where one user is trying to access a record that is locked because another user is modifying it. After this instance, many times the record that was locked goes missing (deleted? launched into outer space? I don't know where it goes, but it ain't in our DB anymore). Any reason why this happens? Do I have something set up wrong? Is there a way to prevent this?

Hi there, whenever I try to install FileMaker Server from the file fms_10.0.1.64.exe (which came as the developer version of FileMaker Server 10) a dialog with a progress bar comes up with a list of extracted files. But when the progress bar comes towards its end an error message appears saying In fact a folder "FileMaker Server 10.0v1" has been created during the extracting process, the needed "Setup.exe" is within that files. I am stuck, what can I do? I am on a windows Server 2003 Standard x64 with SP 2 installed. Any help greatly appreciated. Regards, Thomas

I am located in Japan, where we're being hit with rolling blackouts after the bit earthquake. Added to this mess, I accidentally applied the Java update that breaks using Filemaker Admin, so I can't get much done at all. The system is stable and we're able to start/stop the database from the command line no problem, but I'd really love it if I could run a script from the command line, to manually back up files when I know a blackout is coming. Can anyone tell me how I'd run a backup script from terminal?

About to leave on a business trip for three weeks, I thought I'd check to see if our Filemaker Server Advanced 9 machine (a Mac Pro) needed a software update. The new Java update was there (I think it's 10.6 update 3), and I installed it...little realizing that a monster was sneaking into my house to make my life way more difficult. Now I cannot load the admin at all -- it's totally broken, crashes on startup either giving an "Unable to launch the application" error, or alternately just quitting when I try to load the app via the shortcut on the desktop. This is _really_ a pain. I already reinstalled the OS once, being sure to uncheck the java update when it showed it to …

I just upgraged to FMP 9 Advanced yesterday. We have FMS 7 and FMP 7 on all workstations (except mine now...which has been upgraded). I use a shortcut on the desktop to open our database: fmp7://10.168.1.101/customers.fp7 It doesn't work with FMP 9 Advance. So, I tried the alternative. File > Open > Remote. In the dialog box, it shows the correct host on the left side, but it doesn't show any available files. There should be several. So, I opened FMP 7, File > Open > Remote, and it lists all the files there. I can still open the database under FMP 7 but NOT under FMP 9 Advance. When I manually enter the network file path, it says: "Cu…

Hello All! I'm attempting to set up FMS with Web Publishing, and have run into a big obstacle: My director dropped in and asked if I could assist with a standard installation of FMS on Snow Leopard. It seems he couldn't find a way to pass the web-server test while in the Deployent Assistant. We tried using host 127.0.0.1 (server is local) and port 80 with no luck. I tinkered around with the server/web/DNS settings and everything seems pretty solid. PHP5 is running (which I don't think matters anyways since FMS has its own distribution), as well as Apache and the usual web modules. I must admit, I am new at this position and I do not know what may have previ…

I have a solution that is shared between two users - both of whom need to be able to add, delete, change and manage all the data in the solution. User 2 does not have access to the scripting functions - but can add, delete or modify any data. The solution is stored in Dropbox - in a shared folder. Both users have a copy of FMP 10 installed on their machines. They open the file and log-in as unique users (different access). The problem is that if both change records at the same time, two copies of the solution are created. One is database and the other is database (User 2's conflicted copy dated today). I want to be able to warn the second user that the first user is curre…

I am considering using the plug-in auto update mechanism to distribute a plugin to a number of our Filemaker users who do not have it currently installed. Am I correct in assuming that the update process occurs directly between the Filemaker Client and the server, so there is no requirement to set up special access privileges on the computer hosting Filemaker server? Hello, in this forum a few have posted that their FMS 11 on Windows Server 2008 Standard 64-bit, actually slows down after some time due to a memory problem with this setup. I would love to hear from anyone who runs such a setup please. Can you confirm that this combination has a performance problem after some time of operation? If so Im thinking of installing my new FM Server on Windows 2003 as I cannot afford a performance issue here. Thanks for any responses, Spongebob

Server dies after 1 hour. Very strange.... does anyone else have the same problem?

Hi, I've only used server for small applications but I have a large use and am trying to decide if it is feasible to use Filemaker or have to go with something like Microsoft SQL etc so I can spec out this project. Basically it is for a back end for a point of sale like DB that will connect with about 10-50K systems (not fmp clients but some type of standalone hardware). The clients will collect simple transaction data and that will be sent back to the server. Other users will be able to log on and see see their transaction totals with a front end web page. Perhaps this is just too obvious. Help is greatly appre…

I currently rent space on a filemaker web server. One of the things I notice about the databases I store on this server is that the option to "SAVE A COPY AS" is dimmed out. I can read and write to the databases but cannot save a copy onto a thumb drive. I have been building some proprietary software for my company and I would like my workers to have unfettered access to it but I do not necessarily want them to own a copy of their own. If they end up going to work for somebody else I do not want my competitors to have a copy of my software. The people who typically work for me are smart enough to know the value of this software and smart enough to kn…
