FileMaker Pro v7 – v11

Hi, I recently opened the database I am working with and all my data has disappeared. The records are still there, but they are empty and devoid of data. I had a back-up copy, so it is not the end of the world, but I would like to know how to avoid this problem in the future. Does anyone know why this might have occurred and how I could avoid it? Has anyone found a way to print text in black ink only when printing to a digital press? FM changes 100% Black to 74 Cyan, 71 Magenta, 64% Yellow, 87% Black. I'm guessing that FM is using a color profile to convert the values. Maybe someone had found a way to actually print black as black. Should not be a hard thing to do. I have removed all color profiles from the system. To the point where FM crashed when I go to edit a color. I had to replace at lease the generic CMYK for the sliders to work. But even then it seems like a generice RGB profile exists. I have also turned off color matching in the print setting in my scripts. This is not an issue in FM 6 ru…

Filemaker 9.0v3 2.8 GHz intel core 2 duo, running 10.5.4 1.83 GHz intel core duo, running 10.5.4 1.8 GHz Power PC G5, running 10.4.10 I am having an issue with using the Code 3 of 9 barcode font with Filemaker 9. It is working on the same computers with Filemaker 6, but will not even display in Filemaker 9 (I get a default readable font.) Any ideas?

I have been using FileMaker for a long time from version 3 up to my current version 9 advanced. As I've progressed, I've kept each version [version 5, 6, 8.5adv & 9.0adv] on my system. The reasoning is that several clients that use my solutions are still using one of the specific versions mentioned. I've recently begun to have 'sharing' problems with my latest versions. I decided to verify the version number on each of my different solutions, only to find that ALL of them display a version number of "5.1". Hi I have 2 x 5 user licences of Filemaker 7 which we run accross our office. I have replaced a number of machines and would like to find out which licence key I have used, so that I dont duplicate them, using 7 of one and 3 of another etc. In about filemaker it simply says volume licence, is there a way of finding out which key i have used? Hi, I need some help please... recently I bought Filemaker Pro 9. I started doing my database in Windows XP. The problem is that know I have to move to Mac and when I open the database in Mac, I don't know why, but I can't have access to the files I've put there! I'm only able to see the records...the files appears only the icon, but if you try to click on them or save it to the disk the option doesn't work..appears like if you can't perform that option.. I don't know if the problem is because I used a different operator system to make the database, but that shouldn't be the problem cause i'm using the same program! Can anyone help me??

Is there any tools can do Stress Test on FMP database?

This is probably a stupid question. I know a cache is temporary storage for commonly used information. My question is, what is it used for in FileMaker? Is setting it higher better? I assume yes, but I'm just checking. Does setting it higher improve performance? Especially if there are a lot of relationships? Thanks.

I recently needed to update a FM3 database to FM9. In addition, the database was migrated from a PC to a Mac. While the conversion of the database went without issue, I was experiencing significant performance issues when using the database. Mainly, I would get the beach ball as I moved from record to record. With only 5800 records in the database, I knew something else was causing the problem. I loaded FM 9 adv on my Win Vista based HP laptop and the short cut keys ctl-alt-arrow for aligning objects stopped working. I have to use the menu to align objects. I don't have this problem with FM9 adv on my Win Vista desktop computer. Can this be a keyboard issue? Is there a setting somewhere in FM?

hi, Is it possible to merge two filemaker files into one, with all of the field definitions? I have moved from FM4.1 to FM9 advanced. In 4.1, relational tables were different files. FM9 can have multiple tables in a single file and it would be better to do it this way rather than maintaining several files. I can't see anything in the user's guide or help files. Exporting field definitions would also work but I can't see how to do this either. I'd be grateful for suggestions, many thanks, George

I have a related DB with 8 files. Works fine in versions 7 & in 8. But when I open the DB in V9, I get the message that one of the files is damaged & needs to be recovered. So I use the recover function, but when I open the file I have lost about 150 records. Done this a number of times with the same result. Never happens in versions 7 or 8, only in 9. Any ideas?

I've seen this a couple of times in different DB's where a record in a database display question marks (?) in all the fields. When I perform a file recovery, no errors are reported, but the record in question disappears. What is odd is the record can be found based on data that was on the record, say, by Student ID number. As far as I can tell the record is completely corrupted so I import a good copy of the record from a backup. Any ideas on why this is happening?

Argh, this is driving me nuts. I contracted a few people to put in data on to a spreadsheet in Excel, and now I'm trying to import this data in to the "LawCases" database, and for some reason, I'm able to import them fine straight from the excel file, but when I try to import them from another .fp7 file that I have imported the excel data in to (in order to mess around with the serial numbers easily), the damned thing keeps giving me this message! I'm able to do it from the "Clients" layout, and the BoxesMatters layout, for some reason, but not any of the others.. If I have Filemaker 8.5 Advanced, am I eligible to purchase an upgrade to the regular version of FM 9 (not Advanced)?

I installed FileMaker Pro on a client machine and was able to connect to the databases on the FileMaker server database host. Everything was golden. Then, the machine needed to be reloaded (and we completely blew away and reinstalled everything). After I reinstalled FileMaker Pro, I could no longer connect to and see the databases on the FileMaker Server. For the life of me, I cannot figure out what has changed from the last load to this load. Every time I quit my solution I several hundred of the following message when opening Console. iMac C2D, 2.16ghz, 3MB Ram, Leopard 10.5.3, FMP9 v.03. Also, the opening splash screen says FMP9 Trial. My office recently upgraded to FileMaker Pro 9, and for the most part it works great. The only problem we are having is that the print menu no longer works properly. The problem is this: regardless of which printer is selected from the Print menu, FM prints to the printer last selected in the Print Setup menu. This means that when anyone wants to change which printer they are printing to, they have to go into the Print Setup menu and select the printer there before going to actually print their records/layouts. Every time I put my MacBook Pro to sleep FM 9 Advanced crashes. This has happened on two different MacBook Pros. One has 2 gigs of RAM, the other 4. Otherwise FM runs fine. It's an annoyance. Any ideas on why this is happening and how to prevent it.

I seem to have a problem with FM9 Adv... I get excessive flickering or flashing, screen refreshes usually working in layout mode. My PC is an AMD Sempron 3300+ running XP Pro and this problem does not happen any other time, except in FileMaker. The constant screen refreshes are incredibly annoying and hinders any productivity. Typically, I will get four or five so-called "refreshes" in a row for no reason, and at least one "refresh" just about every time I select a field or other element on a layout. Does anyone have a clue on how to resolve this?

It's been 4 months now since the release of Leopard, and still FileMaker is not compatible with it. Windows are getting out of focus all of the time, and are sometimes even impossible to activate again, the only option left being to kill the application and damage/lose data. It's not because you can start up an application, you can declare it "compatible". I am using FMP 8.5v2 and cannot do a simple copy in layout mode. I get that dang Xerces Panic Error every time!! I've tried Ctrl+c and clicking on the Copy icon, but get the same results. Of course, I'm also using Vista Home Premium, so that's probably where the problem lies. I find that there are conflicts with this and Adobe Acrobat. The similarity here is that both applications create PDF files. I'm pretty sure the problem exists because I'm using Vista. We are running Filemaker Pro 8 and are unable to create a new document without getting an error message (no error message number is attached.) Removing and reinstalling the program does not help. Sometimes we can open an old file and sometimes we cannot open anything. Does anyone have any suggestions? We do not want to have to wipe this computer clean and start over. :confused:

I have been using the trial version FileMaker Pro 9 and have purchased FileMaker Pro 9 Advanced. I now want to use the Pro Advanced version instead of the trial version. We are using the recover feature on FM Pro 9 to periodically remove uneditable, blank records from a large database. We were surprised to find that the recovery process did not recover the database consistently. We performed several tests of the recover process using the same corrupt file and running recover on different computers. We observed that recover removed the blank records on some computers, but not others. Then we discovered that recover was running out of disk space on the computers where it didn't remove the records. It is a complete list of national "do not call" numbers for the areas that my company makes phone calls to. It is only referanced once for some calling lists that get imported. This has worked well for a few years now but as the company has grown, so has the area that we service (and is likly to continue to grow). Hi, I get a -103 general activation error when I try to launch FM 9.0 when logged into my PC via Remote Desktop. Is anyone else aware of a workaround? i like to remote in from client sites sometimes to enter an invoice, etc and this prevents me from doing it. seems like FMP devs didn't distinguish between single user Remote Desktop sessions which should be allowable under the license agreement, and a full-blown MS Terminal Server which supports multiple users. help?

I haven't used filemaker in almost 20 years - before the days of the internet and email!! So, now that i am starting again with Filemaker 9, I want to know how to integrate w/ address book on my Mac. Hi all, I experienced the weird situation. I am not sure if this is bugs? When I tried to do some kind of Importing from another files, it was good. Then, suddenly, when I tried to open the script, all the contents are gone. So, I delete all imported scripts. Then, I tried to close FM and reopen again. When I double clicked the scripts, it said "This script cannot be found or has been deleted." But the fact that all the scripts are still remain on my Scriptmaker. Is this an issue or bugs? Hello - I've just purchased Filemaker Pro 9, tried to install on my PC (OS = Windows XP Media Center) Installs, but crashes immediately upon launching. Called Tech support, and learned that FM 9 is not certified to run on XP Media Center. Is that correct? My understanding is that XP Media Center is a superset of XP, and I've never encounted a problem with any other software. I've been holding off on making the switch to Vista, but if anyone has any other suggestions I would very much appreciate hearing from you. Thank you. peh

Hello; I'm new here but not to Filemaker. I started using FM with the first version when Nashoba owned it. My first problem, and this has existed since version 5, is that the serial number will not advance. I use this feature for invoicing (thank God I am the only employee) and starting with version 5 it became erratic and finally I had to increment it manually. I have been through exporting the data and rebuilding the file and importing the data again and no luck. I just don't know why it doesn't work and no one else seems to either. I recently made a database on filemaker pro 8. I then tried to put the database onto my work computer which also has filemaker pro 8 on there but when i try open it, filemaker opens and then my database only flashes on the screen quickly then disappears again. Filemaker Pro 8 has been installed for about 4 years and worked fine until recently. We have uninstalled and reinstalled several times and still have the same problem.

In one of my databases I added an item to the Help menu that brings up a submenu of help topics specific to that database. This custom menu item works fine when I bring the database up in FMP8A. But when I run it under FMP9A, the menu item is dimmed. I've examined the settings for my custom menu set, for my replacement for the standard Help menu, and for the item I added in my replacement and can't find anything that might explain the difference in behavior. Does anyone have any ideas of what might be going on? Have I stumbled over a regression from FileMaker 8 to FileMaker 9? -- Glenn

so i'm in a weired situation i guess. there is a fm server in this company i work for now. its version 5. all the files end with fp5. so now there is a new server 9 (almost advanced). test mode.... problem: on my macbook i have fmp 9. can't see anything on the fms 5. everybody else has a windows client fmp 6. none of those can see any of the databases on the fms 9. which end with fp7. so basically if i want to work on their current server i have to degrade my client to 6?!? that would be retar-ded. cause i dont think the company would start spending money on new fmp clients for all their windows machines. is there any backward compatibility so fms 9 can serve…

Can anyone confirm that this is a bug in FM 8.5 any sub version. I cannot move any window in FM of any size fully off screen. Not with the built-in FM script Move/Resize Window step or even a third party plug-in such as WindowUtility. It seems to only happen in FM 8.5. I can move windows offscreen with FM 7, 8 and 9. I have even tried different versions of Mac OS X and it is not linked with OS X. If you know about this do you know of a work around? Thanks

Prior to FMP 9 Advanced the Script Debugger would not let one step past the script step "Pause/Resume Script (Indefinitely)"; rather it just held it up in the paused mode until the user triggered a script in the interface (button) that resumed the current script. I find this behavior much more useful than the current behavior, which is to allow the developer to step past the "Pause/Resume Script (Indefinitely)" because the resumption of the scripts that I have pause is most often accompanied by a script result being passed along by the script of the button. Not sure if this is a PC or FileMaker issue. I'm hoping it's something simple that someone can give me advice on. Our database is served from a Mac Xserve to two offices, one of which is Mac only, the other is a mix of Macs and PCs. Everything is fine except that whenever one of the PC users wishes to type a '£' symbol into a field they get a '#'. All the Mac users are fine. This happens whether they use alt-3 or shift-3. It gives the same result as when you attach a PC keyboard to a Mac - but they're attached to PCs! It's odd that all the PC's are behaving the same way and only in FM9. With FMP 9 there is the nifty "Send Link.." Option on the file menu. When I send one out, is there any way to add on parameters to that? Like a record ID or something that could then be captured in FM when the user logs in? I am guessing not, but thought I would ask anyway.

I'm getting this error mesage when trying to share a file with FileMaker 9 on Vista FileMaker cannot share files because another useu is already sharing files using FileMaker Pro on this computer No other filemaker product is installed on this computer. and for troubling shooting I disconnected it from the network. Is anyone here having problems with activation? The problem I've had is that I had to reinstall due to a hard disk crash, at which point filemaker refuses to activate, saying I need to first deactivate the previous installation. Well, seeing as how my time machine is out of gas, I'm not really sure how I'm supposed to do that. And once again filemaker's stellar support has responded with... absolutely no reply. Anyone have any suggestion? Otherwise I think I'll have to start down the murky path of pirated software-- and if I have to do that, I'm never ever upgrading again.

Hi Guys, The IT department rolled out patch number 3 for version 9 for FM. The previous install was 9v1. It seems as though everytime a user tries to open up a LOCAL file (i.e. a file that is not hosted by our server but could be on the local disk or a networked mapped drive), FileMaker decides to go into uninstall mode. Has anyone encountered this behaviour and knows of a workaround. We have approximately 600 machines and about 60 have come back to us. We've had to unistall the whole app and then reinstall it. Hi, I recently upgraded a 74 file FM6 solution to FM9 maintaining the 74 files. I'm having problems with the startup time. In FM6 the startup was around 30-90 seconds dependant on hardware, and now it can take up to 10 minutes. a) Is there anything that can be done to reduce this time without reauthoring the dbs to reduce the amount of files? is there a formula for working out hardware requirements as you increase the file count? c) Are there any known performance issue when converting from FM6 to FM9 formats. I'm not sure why, but FileMaker never seems to remember to use the user dictionary user.upr ... I frequently have to reselect it, seemingly for each database even though others are open and already have it selected. Is there a way around this so that this dictionary is always selected by default? Even better for me would be if all of our FileMaker Server clients could share the same dictionary. We're in a pretty esoteric field, and it would be best of we could all work off of the same one. Is that possible?

Will FM9 change a data file? Can I use a FM 8 file back and forth between 8 and 9 without any problems. File will just be used locally with no web usage.

I have recently changed the name of my table and now it says 'Table Missing' in every field. When I go to manage database then tables it says that all 271 of my records are there but they are not being displayed. Please help

I have a set up a small FMP database that runs on a server that hosts a web-based application (non-FileMaker) created by a another company. The purpose of the FMP database to simply to trigger two scripts - one that imports data from a file on that server into a database being hosted on Filemaker Server, and one that exports another datafile from a second database hosted on Filemaker Server, to be picked up later by this third-party application. The file simply calls the two scripts and then closes. It takes about 2 minutes to run. FileMaker server is hosted on a separate Server in close proximity on the network. Does anybody know how to purge a drive of the trialware spyware file from Filemaker so that the trial can be reinstalled and actually work : Why ? I downloaded the trial around a month or so ago to test for display of images via path or calculated field aka "web browser style" - it failed. I deleted the trial. Yesterday I discover FM 9 has some new slick MSSQL feature that may solve another problem for us and now the rep tells me I'll have to wipe my drive or go find another computer. Ok Ok I guess I do have two or three PC's within visual range or a Mac mini with only 256mb ram..... but darn it I want it on my dual screen workstation !

This is rather weird and only happens in a runtime versions of a small membership database program I develop for a "not for profit" organization. Using the Ctrl-C or Ctrl-V (cut and paste), wipes out the text being copied and leaves an ASCI graphic symbol. My users are getting a little pissed-off at this and I cannot for the life of me understand or find any conflicts. Thought is my be just associated with wireless keyboards but apparnetly not. Works OK in the main V9 engine but not in the runtimes. Any assistance would be appreciated. Regards, Roy

Has anyone ever had a problem with screen flicker/reloading in fm9.0 application after performing file searches using windows xp search function. This was also a problem for me using 7.0. This problem only occours after performing a search and the search window is still running and showing in the tool bar.

How do you delete file referances from the "recent" part of the quickstart menu? I do not know if this is possible. I could not find it in the help file. Thanks

I'm not sure if this is the right forum to be posting this, but I'm having a problem with data getting back to the server quickly. When in a database updating a part number, if you click on Back to Order, the information doesn't change unless you leave the order and go back. We need it to update automatically. Also, when putting in a Reference Part Number, it wouldn't let you put in a part unless the word REV was in it. There's a formula in place to make that happen, but it seems to have stopped working. I didn't actually design all of this, so I am kind of lost. Any help would be great!! Thanks, -Matt

We use an outside service to monitor 150 computers up/down status. and I would like to have Filemaker pull the data out of the webpage and store it all in the database. Does Filemaker have a function that would automatically do this?

Most discussion of the Leopard/FM fiasco is on the FM9 forum, but for those of us with FM8 destined to get a Leopard machine, is there somewhere we can turn for initial reports of what works, what doesn't and (gulp) what crashes? (I know it's not *supported*, but the question of course is how well I can limp along 'til I can afford FM9; my new machine is budgeted for me, but FM is "luxury" software...)

Hi folks, I'm a fairly skilled FMP6 developer running Windows XP. I recently downloaded the trial version of 8.0 (skipped the v7 series completely-hah!) to see what all the hoopla was about and I must say there do seem to be some nice features most notably built in PDF support. HOWEVER.. one thing that hit me right away was how SLOW the layout mode has become. I am very fast with the mouse+keyboard and like to move,resize and drag things around on layouts quickly. With 6.0 this was fine, things were snappy and immediate. With 8.0, I find there is a VERY noticable "lag" between when I grab an object and start to drag it and when it actually starts moving. Als…

Hi All First post here, hope I'm in a good place to start. I have a database that value list for radio buttons that is filled with a calculated field. The calculation concatenates two fields from a related table. It also is set to be only filled with the values related to the record in use. This worked wonderfully until last week sometime, when suddenly the value list no longer matches the order I added the two fields in, but is now sorting the list alphabeticaly. Also, now I'm getting a warning that the value list "won't work" because it can't be indexed, due to the use of related fields. Any clues why this has suddenly happened? I haven't done a…

I am a complete newbie to FMP, but at work we have a new setup where some of us are on Macs and some on PCs. The person who I am working with is using a PC and I use both PC/MAC. Whenever anyone attaches a .pdf file using a PC, the mac users cannot open the file (cannot double click or extract it to desktop etc). PC uses seem to be able to open their own attachments and those attached using a MAC. Does anyone have any advice about how to fix this problem? Thanks in advance.

hi there, we have a speed problem with greater text fields. when our useres write fast in text field, filemaker (8 or 8.5) is not fast enough to display the letters. so it takes some time until they appear on the screen. the more largly the type size is the slower is it. we tried it on different hardware and on different OS (windows). has anybody an idea? gebhard

I'm experiencing something odd with V8.5 & V9, where the entire window does this sort of shifting or flashing or skewing several times before it finally stops. This happens usually in layout mode, although it has happened in browse mode a few times. The screen/window always snaps back into place, but I can't figure out why it does this. Never had this issue in V7, and I have downloaded any/all updates from FM. Anyone else had this happen?

I have noticed that if I change my network connection on my laptop from wired to wireless while working in FMP Adv 9, FMP freezes when I attempt to use the function: Get ( SystemIPAddress ) After force quitting FMP, this function will continue to freeze FMP until I restart my laptop. Has anyone else noticed this bug? Is this a Mac OS X only bug? Is this a FMP Adv only bug? Does this only happen to me?

I am a booking agent that needs to try out a touring database product that I am buying but it only supports up to Filemaker 6.0. I don't want to buy 6.0 unless obviously this product is what I want. Hi, We have a workgroup (6 persons) with FMP9 installed, all with unique license key. Before we used PMP7, there have no problem of sharing common files. But after this updating, only one user can connect to database. If we open a common file at server machine, and all client machine report a "License key conflict with user FMServer". This is first time we get this kind problem, if anyone has an idea?

I have just upgraded from FMP 6.5 to FMP 9.0v3 on a single Windows XP platform (no network). My problem is that I keep getting the following message as I try to use my databases: "This record cannot be mofied in this window because it is already modified in a different window". In the late '90s, I had someone create my order form, and in the 10 years or so I've made a lot of changes and additions. Many new forms, new ways to look up and display information. Grrr, i have just updated to new FM 9 and as for now , i think in some ways its better. But i am getting really upset when viewing, creating or editing scripts, that there is NOWHERE THE OK BUTTON! Always click the cross, then click on Save button - it tortures me. Isn't there any update or fix or addon or something that can add these buttons (Ok/Discard ) to it? Hi, Despite some information at the latests DevCons, I'm still having doubts about how really data is moved from the host to the local client. Very concretely, I'm having hard time determining why in certain circumstances, my solutions are quick and in some others very, very, drammaticaly slow. At one point, and that's where I am now of my conclusions, I have a tendency to believe that the whole data environment is "downloaded" to the client whenever it is needed. I have an Xserve, G5, a couple iMacs and a couple EMACs on a LAN running FM7. I need to replace a machine and want to buy another iMac. The last iMac I bought was Tiger based and has had no problem running FM7 on the network. I want to buy another one now, and am not sure if a new iMac running Leopard will give me all kinds of headaches getting it to run on FM7. I read something about "Rosetta",but I don't know what that is. I would upgrade to a newer version of FM, but buying a 10 license pack isn't cheap, and business hasn't been so hot lately, so I'd like to hang on to the cash if I can at least for the time being. In OS X Mail, when you select a message in the message list (the top pane, above the message viewing area), performing a Copy copies the mail header and message. I use this to ad hoc migrate Mail messages into a text field in FileMaker (using Paste or Paste Text Only). Today when I tried to do either paste method, the cursor just blinks in the text field. When I paste into TextEdit, the text shows up. The same thing happens in Developer 7, so I'm thinking it might be some character in the clipboard from the Mail Copy. I've tried on a number of different email messages. Any ideas? Thanks. Bob

I "borrowed" the sorting concept from one of the Filemaker 9 templates for use in my own database. In the list view of the "Asset Management" template included with FMP 9, the list headers are buttons which can be clicked to sort the data by ascending or descending order. In order to accomplish this, there are a series of scripts/calculations which I copied into my database. Depending on whether the data is ascending or descending, there is a graphic of a delta or inverse delta next to the header. I am looking into one of these Data Compression appliances to put on each end of my P2P T1. They said it will increase bandwidth by over 3x's on any uncompressed data. Does Filemaker compress the data it sends and receives between the client & server?

Grrrrrr. I just updated to FM 9 and all my Open File script buttons don't work anymore. I get all sorts of logins required. I just want to click an open FM button and go to db and open using normal logins.

I have a number of local calendars that I've been exporting, using the CC ICal filter, into my /user/Sites folder, and syncing to iCal. I was using, as an example, "http://localhost/~johnnolan/bookings.ics" as a URL in iCal. Now, with Leopard, my calendars don't refresh, and if I re-enter the url that had worked, I get this message: "Connection to the server localhost was refused". Anyone here know what might have changed to cause this problem?

I'm sure there is a simple answer I just don't know what it is. I built a solution on a Mac and just put it onto a PC laptop. Each time I try to change or add something to the PC I get a message saying I cannot modify the record. What do I have to do to make this work. Hi all. After converting my files to 9.0v2, I experienced a crash. After a few tests, I noticed the container field was responsible for the crash. I created a brand new file under 9 to make sure it was not related to my old file. Guess what? I crashed. I tested that with two machines to get the same result. In detail, I set up a wav file through Insert / QuickTime. I can run the container field several times but when I click outside of the field, the file crashes. Any idea?

:( Has anyone worked with SQL shadow tables? After developing a solution with SQL how do you move it to the production environment? We have developed a solution using shadow tables to an SQL Data source. Now we are ready to move the solution from the development environment to production. When we reconfigure the DSN in the ODBC administrator nothing changes in Filemaker. The shadow tables remain connected to the old DSN. Any attempts to reconnect the shadow table data source causes everything to mix up and tons of work is lost. We have tried every work around we could think of and it looks like we have to rebuild the Filemaker database for the new environment. …
