So, I have this solution for the home inspection industry that was done in FMP5/6. We run it in kiosk mode on ruggedized tablet PCs running XP Tablet Edition. Upgraded (?) one of them to SP2 the other night and, lo and behold, Microsoft has completely changed the way they handle the Tablet Input Panel (popup keyboard, handwritting recognition, etc). Seems it now senses when the user clicks on a text entry field (supposedly in any application) and a little button pops up next to that field. The user clicks on the button and the TIP pops up. Simple. Elegant... except it doesn't work at all with FileMaker!! Anybody know why this might be? Does Filemaker not make …

Hi there, this is my first post and I have developed a System with 20+ tables with many relationships. I have 15 clients FM 5.0 and a FM 5.5 Server. So far the performance (local Lan was perfect). We had to access the files through a VPN (W2K)over a 256k dsl connection. But just to open the 20+ files is taking 15 minutes, when the Lan time is less than 10 sec. I do not have a clue of what is wrong! The only thing I noticed is that any other use of the DSL connection the tranfer rates are much higher... when I am using only FM it goes really slow (1/10th of the transfer rate approx.) Any ideas?

Hello All, I need some help in figuring this one out. I am running the FM server on W2K Server. I have 45 users accessing an average of 60 files and at any one given time (Mac and PC users..all OS's) The problem is this: I have one user (W9x) who is loses communication with the host daily at about 1-1:30 PM. This is the only user that has this problem. I do not think its machine or an OS related (upgraded both system, network card, OS and even changed her network line). There is one thing that could be related, I run a 12 noon backup, which doesn't take too long to run, but that's all that going on with the server at near that time (other than other users accessing …

Can someone point me in the right direction, with prices and any drawbacks of using remote software to connect 5 users to my db Thanking all in advance Cheers Jalz

While presently using Calsnap to choose and enter a date in a filed, I'm looking for the avenue (script perhaps) to have the calendar pop up ON top of my layout page and NOT as a seperate page in itself. When I access the Calsnap, it pops up in a brand new window, taking up the entire screen. I'm sure there is a way to control the way the calendar appears but having difficulty. My need is for the layout page to remain on screen with the calendar pop-up showing somewhere on that layout. Your suggestion/solution would be greatly appreciated.

Me again, still playing with remote access techniques for an .fp4 database served by FMS3. Based on my observations when using larger database files, it appears as though FMS doles out an entire file to a client, and then returns alterations to the server as they are made. Is this assumption correct? Does this behavior extend to subsequent FM versions? If so, it seems like a strong argument for pruning unneccessary content out of databases that might be served this way... Thanks, --Chris

The reason I say this is because I've successfully reproduced the problem with both FM6 and FM7 on both Windows XP Pro and Windows 2000. Here's what happens: When I open Control Panel > Administrative Tools > Data Sources (ODBC), none of the FileMaker ODBC drivers are displayed. Not for User, not for System, and not for File. Nada. This is what it looks like: Yeah, I've activated the Local and Remote Data Access plug-in's in FM, and I've set my database sharing privileges to Multi-User. I've even completely uninstalled FileMake…

  56. Hello everyone. This is my first post/thread. I actually signed up at FileMaker Dev Con last year. I'm beginning to get into FileMaker a little more, and hope to do more development work. I've reached a few conclusions: 1) I am beginning to need a laptop 2) I could do with a Mac as I want to develop more FM solutions for clients. Currently have no Mac machines, so I can't test solutions intended for the Mac environment. Makes sence to get a Mac laptop I think. I am planning to go solely for FM 7, since I have no major projects on the go and no major FM 6 solutions to support. AFAIK FM 7 does not run on OS 9, so I'm looking at OS X only, am I rig…

I work on a website that links to a Mac at my office for 2 FM databases. Yesterday that Mac broke down. We removed the hard drive and made it an external drive on a new Mac. We attempted to re-establish the connection between the website and the FM files by renaming the new Mac's IP address with the one from the old Mac--so that the link from the website: http://206.20...etc, theoretically would still work. All our TCP/IP settings, and preferences in Filemaker appear to be correct, yet we cannot fix this thing. When we turn on web sharing we can see the directory of files in the web browser, so we definitely are reaching the new Mac over the web, but we just can't…

Hi! I have FMP Unlimited 6.0v4 running Web Companion 6.0v3 on a Mac XServe 2x1.33 with 2GB RAM/4x180GB drives (with OSX Server 10.3.3). There are eight databases running off an iMac (512MB/20GB) with FMP Server 5.5v4. The two major databases have 400,000 and 135,000 records each and have three related fields. I'm running FMP Connector with Apache on the XServe so most of the web load has been taken off of the Web Companion. The problem is that I get (seemingly) random "beach ball of death" on FMP Unlimited. The database system works fine for hours but then hangs and I have to kill FMP Unlimited and then relaunch it. 61. This problem is frustrating me probably because I'm not a networking expert, here goes with the explaination. My office has 3 macs running Mac OS X . 1 machine has a bunch of FM files set to multi-user, the other two machines pickup these files using the open> hosts command. Each machine has a fixed IP and has the same subnet mask. The problem is that the file host machine is not left on all the time, being put to sleep overnight, as are the "client" machines. On occasions the client machines are unable to get the files (blank host window) the only way to get them back on line is to restart FM on the host machine. Has anyone any suggestions as to how to get around this…

Does anyone have any information regarding the differences between fonts in Windows and Mac OS ? Our database was designed for the Mac and has worked well for a number of years but since migrating some of our workstations to Citrix and Windows output prints incorrectly due to the fonts on the Mac and PCs being ever so slightly different. It appears that FileMaker for Windows is not WYSIWYG. FileMaker themselves do not see this as their problem but as a font problem. Thanks in advance, Dave.

Why, when I open from the guest computer, do I get open windows from both guest and host? Here is the setup: The host machine has an "open all" script attatched to the first file, so the rest open automatically. This was created in single user mode on the host machine, host file. All the files were then set to multi -user mode. On the guest machine I navigate to the host and open the first file. In my open windows list on the guest machine I then get some duplicates, like (lineitems.FP5) and (lineitems.fp5) - the same with a couple of other files. I think the capitalized .FP5 comes from the guest machine's hard drive, although I have only opened files from the host. There…

Personally, I dislike MS-style toolbars (just give me a hotkey or some Adobe style palettes). But, FileMaker appears to have relied on them, and then pulled their support in Mac OS X. It makes database design pretty difficult sometimes. The other annoying issue is that sometimes when I click on a button (actually a field assigned a script), the cursor "sticks" to the field, as if I simply held the button down.
