hello, I am attempting to prioritize rows in a portal. I have tried having a field that is a drop down with the values 1-5, but the fields stay the same, regardless of what data i pull from related tables. has anyone else had experience in prioritizing related information in portals?

I am working through Excelisys' Hierarchical Portals (http://www.excelisys.com/services/fmp7/tips_tricks.htm). The MainID is a vital part of the ParentPathID. However, when I read the accompanying white paper, I can't figure it out. Has anyone used this hierarchy before? Can anyone help me figure out how to append the MainID into the ParentPathID? I would like to reorder the records that appear in a portal. Can this be done using the small black up and down arrows that appear in a sort dialog box? Or in the scriptmaker dialog box? Basically it's a click and drag the record to the row number you want it to be. Click row 5 and drag it to row 1 and then it becomes row 1.

Hi, Been struggling with this for a few hours now. I have a portal on my layout and one field is a Yes / No field, at some point I need the user to be able to change the yes/no field in the portal to a “Yes” answer in all the portal rows which show up for that record.. I have tried the setfield script but it only changes the first portal row field to “Yes” Is there a way to change the yes/no field in all the portal rows for a particular record at one time. File 1 - [color:red]Orders shows each order as a single record; File 2 - [color:red]Items if you order 5 red widgets and 3 blue widgets, each widget is an individual record in Items ie a total of 8 records. I want to be able to "put" word documents in my database (in browse mode, for the user) and be able to open, edit, save and create them inside the database. So when I click on a document in FM it will open in Microsoft Word and I can edit it and then save and close it and it will be saved in FM. I've tried to use the container fields and it doesn't seem to work very well. Eventually I will have a portal to another table that will have all of the documents that apply to a certain customer. Hiya... I'm working on an Event's database, that incorporates attendees info, events and the people who organize events. Event teams tend to be fairly static with people repeating roles regularly. As they are an Event team member, they also show up in the attendees table, as they've attended an Event. I'm wanting to display events that individual attendees have been involved with, and the specific role they played... ie, Jane Smith 'ORGANISED' 'EventID' 001 & 'ASSISTED' 'EventID' 002, on the Attendees / Contacts layout. Hi, In a clients table I have: - PORTAL1: A contact portal. - PORTAL2: An address portal that shows addresses for the selected contact. A button in PORTAL1 sets a global field and allows the user to show related addresses for that contact. The problem is when the user moves from one client record to another client record. Because the global remains, the user sees the wrong PORTAL2 information in every client record. I have scripted the navigation, so I have he option to empty the global field every time the user moves from one record to another. However, I just do not like this solution. I'm working on a database solution for my babysitting business. Things are coming along nicely, but I'm having a problem showing data in a portal. The portal is based on the table occurence Job_SitterAvailability. The portal should show what sitters are available for a given job. The 2 tables have 2 joins: JobDate=AvailableDate (which shows what sitters are a availble for a job based on date) and YoungestChild_n > ChildOlderThan_n (which limits the available sitters based on the youngest age child they are willing to sit for versus the age of the client's youngest child.) I have selected a record in a portal. Now I want to go to another layout in which I have set up all the editable fields I want the user to be able to access (these are not portal fields). Programatically, I would like to say, go to such-and-such a layout and display the record whose (say) companyID field = $$ID. This seems like such a basic request, I'm almost ashamed to ask for help. Hello everybody, I have a situation where I have created a layout that would act as a dialog box to select values from. My plan is to have a portal that would display Attendance records. When a new record is created, to get the value of what type of Absence this is, the small layout would appear next to the object in the portal that the script is linked to. OK, I go through the process of creating a portal with the appropriate fields, etc. It shows up on the layout (layout mode of course) and there's the portal and it's fields. Switch to brows mode and the fields disappear. Switch back to layout mode and find that the fields are now behind the portal and I cannot bring them in front of the portal. One portal that I made the other day had this issue. Today I opened the database and I could enter data in the fields! But I wanted to move the portal and so I did, fields and all. I have a related field within a portal on a report page that I only want to show if the "sort by" field in the Leading Sub-Summary has a certain value. The Leading Sub-Summary is a "Products" field. When that field is "ProductA", I want the related first and last name fields for the clients who own that product to show in the portal. When that field is "Other", I want the related client first and last name fields AND the "othersDiscussed" field to show in the portal. Hi, I have a Project DB wich includ related phase to the project, I'm abel to do a sub-summury report of all the material I need for each phase for a project. But what I want to do is to view the sub-summury of the material in a portal. Now in my portal I see all the dupplicate record of material. I'm working on a database for my babysitting company. In this example, there are three tables. Client, Job, ClientsChildren. I want a portal listing ClientsChildren for the Job. That's easy enough. But I want to be able to remove ClientChildren from the job with a script, without removing the ClientChildren from the client. So far if I delete row from a ClientChildren portal in the job layout, it removes the child completely from the database. Here is my set up: Table A layout: a global field with a popup menu of values from Table D (shows the number of disease categories currently in Table D) Table B: a calculation field as a text result that gives the same value as one of the possibilities in the popup menu based on a foreign key from Table D. Hi all I have a order table & a order_row table. In the order layout I have a tabbed interface with 4 tabs. Articles are added to the order_row table via a portal in the second tab. The information in the order_row tab are huge on each article added, so I can only show one article at a time, to see next article I have to scroll down in the portal. This makes it difficuld to get "the big picture" since I can't see all the articles. I have 3 tables Client, GLCodes and ClientGLCodes. One Client can have many GLCodes and one GLCode can be assigned to many Clients. Hence ClientGLCodes table is created. On the Client Layout, I have a portal for ClientGLCodes where the Rate for the GLCodes can be updated for every client. So the ClientGLCodes portal on Client Layout has the following fields- Master Rate (Comes from GLCodes table), Client Rate, Rate Modified Date. Only the Client Rate can be modified here. Modified Date is defined as "TimeStamp" field in the table definition. The problem is that whenever a rate is modified, the Modified Date gets changed only after the user clicks out of the portal. …

I've inherited a layout that has multiple portals. In the second portal, I'm trying to let the user jump to the portal record in the related table but when they get there, they cannot make any changes because the record is "being modified in a different window". I thought I could add a 'commit' in the script that executes the jump to the related table, but once the commit step is executed, the portal becomes inactive and the 'Goto Related Record' step doesn't execute correctly. So then I thought that I could capture the portal row number and just go back to that row after the commit is executed. But because the portal is no longer active, it's not working eithe…

I have a portal showing records from a table one step away. I've placed a button entirely inside the portal row, and set it to run the script step Go To Related Record. GTRR is set to Get related record from the same table the portal is displaying, and set to Show only related record, match current record only. This script step brings me to the correct layout, but showing all the records in the portal, not just that one. Is this expected behavior? I have a database that keeps track of the tasks that need to happen in my cabinetshop. Each time a task is noted, a record is created with information about the task. These tasks are prioritized with the values 1 thru 10. I would like to view these top ten priorities via a portal on another layout. As the priorities are re-arranged, I would like to see the portal information reflect the changes. When I create scroll bar in my portal it is invisible. The scroll works but i just cant see the scroll bar. the portal tool makes room for the scroll bar, and the portal looks different when show a vertical scroll is selected, but invisible. Anyone seen this?

I've looked around a bit and not found what I'm looking for, so here goes... For each Contact record I can have several phone numbers. The Phones are in their own related table and shown in a portal window on the Contact layout. What I want to do is allow one and only one of the Phone numbers for each Contact to be marked as "Main", thus making it unique in that portal for that Contact record. If I were doing this in MySQL I'd index the combination of "Main" and "ID", making the combination unique, but I don't see how to do this in FMP. Hello, Is it possible to enlarge a container image if this field is viewed via a portal? In my experience, portal fields are only large enough for alphnumeric characters which results in container images impossibly small. I would like to be able to adjust an image to about 1-inch in height and also be associated with the portal fields to which it is associated. Or perhaps there is a way to script a larger version of the associated image in the parent file? I am using 8.5 adv and I am trying to fill a field in my Assignments TO from a related Position TO. I am filtering the portal by programs. I have a dozen programs and almost a thousand positions all total. The filter is working. When I select a program from the filtered global field it enters that program key in the foreign match key of the assignments TO. It also filters the positions for the selected program in the portal of the Position TO. I've been working (for some time!) on creating a personal accounts solution and I'm currently into my second revision. One table is given over to Petty Cash transactions. Petty cash has been isolated from two other transaction tables in order to produce two separate results. 1) Sending some detail along with other summarised info, via scripting, to another table. I'm working on a database for my babysitting business. Right now, I'm trying to create a portal in the Jobs page that shows what sitters are available for the given job time and date. I have successfully created a portal that shows available sitters but it uses a script to work. I'd like the portal to automatically populate availible sitters for the selected job using time and date criteria. Can anyone help? I've included the work-in-progress database. hello. i have a database similar to an invoice system. 3 tables: (1) Invoice w/UID (2) Products w/UID (3) Line Items w/UID I have the line item table linked to the Invoice table via InvoiceID. I put a line item portal in my invoice layout. And I have both "Allow creation of records..." and "Delete Records..." checked on the line items side. But if I make a mistake and clear a row in the line item portal on my invoice layout and re-enter a product, the Line Item record is not deleted. I have two layouts. 1st - Has a portal for rows 1-17 2nd - Has a portal for rows 18-50 1st also has a grand total field for rows 1-50. The grand total works fine. But how do I get a subtotal on the 1st layout for rows 1-17 only?

Find via Tabbed Portals ... need a simpler method. The sample file below shows a very basic version of a technique I've been using to enable the user to specify three different groups of results and have them available as tab-selected portals. It has worked just fine up until now. The problem is that I now want to expand the layout to support up to 12 portals. Before I launch into a brute-force expansion, I was wondering if there might be a simpler technique that wouldn't require a dozen table occurrences and global fields ... or should I just stick with what works? I have a portal on my Purchase Order layout that shows all payments based upon the purchase order number on the main layout. The payment history table and the PO table are linked by the PO #. I created a summary that shows the PO total less payments = balance. The problem is the payments total that is a summary field in the payments table won't update when the PO number is changed unless you click in the field and then out of it. Please help.

I've got no problems with my portals but i have an asthetics question and mb someone has run into this? After i create the first record in the portal row Filemaker seems to automatically jump down and create a new row below and iam seeing the go to releated record arrow i created and some of the calculation fields show zeros etc even though i havent selected something on that row yet. Hello, I'm trying create a script that will let me print all Work Orders that are related to a single Job ID, but I just can't seem to wrap my head around it. The FileMaker Knowledge Base says this: In order to delete a record represented by a portal row (a related record), check the 'Allow deletion of portal records' check box in the Portal Setup dialog window. Select the row by clicking it and choose Delete Record from the Mode menu. The dialog will read, 'Permanently delete this one related record?' Clicking Delete will delete only that related record. I have a layout with multiple portals. I allow the user to delete portal rows in one of the portals through a script. The other portals do not have the 'allow deletion of portal records' box checked. When the user clicks the 'delete item' button, a script executes the 'delete portal row' script step. This step will delete the selected portal row no matter which portal has been selected. This can create havoc in the database. How can I be sure the user has selected the correct portal before I execute the 'delete portal row' step? I'm am trying to find a subtotal from 2-tabbed portals. My SubTotal/Total/Tax/Discount/Shipping fields are in the Transactions table. TransactionDetails_Parts (related to Parts table)and TransactionDetails_Labor (related to Labor table)are related to Transactions by TransactionID. Each tab has a Part/Labor (respectively) portal for line items. Each line items totals properly in the ExtPrice Fields. I need to find the SubTotal for all ExtPrice Fields (parts/labor)to finish up the Transactions layout.

I have been using a portal for a number of years now and all has worked well. The portal brings in records based on a match between two files on the "ParticipantID" field. I have added a second match field and setup a new relationship with the "ParticipantID" as the primary match and "AcademicYear" as a secondary match. The match fields are of the same type. This relationship brings the correct number of records into the same portal but repeats the data from the first portal record in each of the subsequent. portal records. I'm displaying an Examinations portal in a patient record and want to display only post-op examinations and not all examinations for that patient. Is this possible... ie showing only a select group of records from all of the patient's exam records within the portal?

I'm trying to create a database to track customer repairs for my company. So far I have created a customers table (similiar to a contacts style), and a defectives table (for each defective item). What I would like to do is to have the defective items for each customer to be displayed in a portal below the contact information (which I somewhat have worked out). I'm using a unique customer number to link in the defective items for that customer. The problem is that I would like to be able to click on one of the items in the portal of defectives and then have that link to the actual item on the defectives table. How would this be possible? I'm sure this is a straightforward request, but I'm unable to find any post that addresses this requirement. I've created a standalone runtime solution that is accessed via CD-ROM. The solution has portal that filters a result set based upon several criteria selected by the user. I've set up a button beneath the portal that prints "records being browsed". Requirement: I'd like for the end-user to be able to print only the output of their filtered criteria. What I get is 6 blank pages and 2 pages with half the screen printed. I appreciate any help within this regard.

Hi I have a portal refresh problem. I unchecked :Reset Scrollbar when exiting record option. I also enter new records in the portal fields. Since the portal row changes while adding a new row, before adding, I save that portal row number in a globa field. In the End, I say "Go To Portal Row (global field), but it still goes to the first row. I need it to stay where it entered the row. Any help please... Thanx

I have a layout that contains a filtered list of results. In this example, it is a quoter database. I have user preferences table that is related to one table instance of quotes to list items based on user filter settings (active quotes, closed quotes, and quote date range) My boss is being picky, and complained about not being able to use the arrow keys (shesh, make everyone happy by giving users the ability to use the scroll wheel, and the boss wants to use arrow keys!) Is there any way a user could use his keyboard to scroll a portal up and down?

I am new to FMP, but have done quite a bit of database design work in MS Access. In access I could create a "subform" (i.e. - portal) that had both vertical and horizontal scroll bars. I could even "freeze" columns so during horizontal scrolling I would be able to see the key field - for example a part number - and its corresponding "technical specifications". I have tried the same type of arrangement with a portal, but it appears as if it is severely limited in its ability to handle more columns of data then what fit in the portal. Am I missing something? Is their a different way to accomplish what I am trying to do?

I have a layout with a portal to related records, but because of space limitations I need to keep the portal small. I can put a scroll bar, but how to I get the new portal record field to be at the top instead of the bottom? I don't want to have to scroll to the bottom to make a new record through the portal. Gurus at Large, I am working with invoices containing serialized products. I have two tables of data that should be identical, but unfortunately they're not. So I need to compare the two tables and and match up the records. Both tables have several levels of granularity; ex. invoice year, invoice month, invoice day, invoice number, part number, serial number. The problem is that in one table, a serial number for a part might have a leading "S", while in the other table the "S" has been lopped off. I have a script to create a new task, which performs an external script in the Task file "Create Task" and the script is supposed to end up in the portal, with the new record having a task name of "Untitled Task". My intention is to have the new task selected so that the user will know that they have to add a name for the new task. My script is not highlighting the new task. I have gone over this and over this, following every step (which doesn't seem complicated) and I can't get the look up Auto entry to work at all. It worked yesterday, but not today. I'm just stumped on this one. I have a portal that displays a calculation field. The result of the field is a container. The Problem: The field does not display its contents when it is in the first row of the portal. All other rows display just fine and as soon as I add a row above it then displays properly. Hi all, A question: There is a portal with a single row There is a script that sets this portal row to a specific number. Once the portal row has been set and then we switch to "Preview Mode" the portal resets back to its first row contents. Why is it that preview mode does not preserve the portal state ? I have allowed the creation of new records via a relationship, so users can simply type into a portal to create new related records. However, I want this in only some layouts; in others, I want the same users NOT to be able to do this. Is it possible to set this selectively, according to which layout a user is on?

I've read the posts that are related, and reindexed the fields. unindex, get out of program, back in program re-index. I have a portal (in Lab dip tracking table) with auto entry look up from another table (Color Table). When I make a selection color code and color name a ghost code appears. If I select again the correct color is displayed but isn't saved (although the ghost code saves)?? Please help. I am trying to allow several drop down/pop up colors to be added to each record.

Why is it that when I have a portal with a calculated container field with a image in it wont display Each records custom image it will display all the same? It works fine with text fields. Thomas

Hi I have a portal with 15 rows displayed and a scrollbar to view more rows if there are any. When I scroll down to the last record using scrollbar and click out of the portal, the portal moves back to the first row instead of staying on the row that I was on. I have a tab with 3 sections. Passwords, Cards, Reminders. In each tab there is the same portal row that displays a field of a record. How can I show different found sets in different tabs? I've got a portal in my app that's a selector - user clicks on a row, and that determines what is displayed elsewhere on the screen. I've got now problem making this work in general. My question is about visuals for the selection portal itself. Normally I might go with the native portal highlight, or script a container field in the protal to change the background. However, some rows in the portal will already have a different background color, as this is used as a visual metaphor in the app (for newness). Not open to suggestions to change that. So I need an alternate method of highlighting a row, that doesn't involve the background color. I'm lookin…

I have seen some solutions wherein you can highlight a record in a portal view and in another portal view right next to it all the related records highlight. So, rather a portal selection filtering to show only related records, it continues to show all records but highlights the related ones. How is this done?

Here is what I have done: On a layout I inserted a movie (audio-only) that plays back perfectly. When I switch to another layout that contains the same record, but in a portal, when I try to click in the container within the portal, it asks me to record a new sound rather than playback the movie. If I then re-import the file in the portal, then it plays back. Question: why won't it play back in the first place? Why do I have to re-import it from within the portal before it realizes there is data there? It's as if the portal isn't getting the data the first time. Thanks.

I have a situation where I want to have a table that contains "Quotes" (sales quotes) and want to be able to move that data to an identical layout (just different field names) "Invoices" with the click of a button (script I would assume). The data on the Quotes and Invoices are both in an identical portal minus where they display info from, etc.. Here’s what I have: a text field on a layout and a portal of related values (names of people) along side the text field. Here’s what needs to happen: when I click a name in the portal a value from that related record is inserted into the text field wherever the cursor was located prior to clicking the name. Here’s what’s happening: using the Insert Calculated Result script, regardless of which name I select in the portal or where the cursor is located in the text field, the first name in the portal is always placed at the end of the text. Is there a way to make portals automatically resize based on the number of records found in a given search? Along those same lines, is there a way to make a report automatically move a portal to a new page when it hits a page break? Thanks.

Okay I have three portals on one page that have the potential for MANY rows. Certain scripts I run on this page will freeze the window and jump to another layout temporarily to do some stuff and then jump back to the original layout. Unfortunately when this happens, the portals all go back to the top. I would love a way to force my portals to scroll back to the last active record. I already coded something to grab the portal rows from each portal and store them in a global so they can be returned to. The "Go to Portal Row" script step will select the appropriate row but it won't scroll down to it! Any ideas on how this can be done? Thx, Dan

I'm sure I'm missing something basic. I have this exact set-up in one file that is working perfectly but, for some reason, am having problems in another. I have a field in a portal row which is defined as a button (basically go to related for further detail). For some reason, the button won't click. I thought it had to be something with the layout layers but even when I have brought the field in question to the front, I still can't click. If I take the field/button out of the portal, it works fine (other than the fact that it's not in the portal so I can only ever access the first record, of course). What am I missing?
