I have a table of data where there may be many duplicate records based on the 'Name' field, however the other fields data are different. I need to find the first 6 duplicated records based on the 'Name' field and then set a number value (incremented starting from 1 ) against them in a field used as a flag. The table may contain as many as 20,000 records with each unique 'Name' value having 0 to 50 duplicates. Does enyone have any idea how I might achieve this using a script or a custom function?

Hoping someone might have the answer to this. I have two new copies of FM19. I installed on 2 machines (Catalina) but like an idiot accidentality used the same licence key on both machines. Not a problem I thought, just trash the app on one machine and delete the <home>/Library/Preferences/com.filemaker.client.pro12.plist then reinstall and enter the second key (as per Claris instructions). But no! each time I reinstall it does NOT ask me for the licence key but automatically picks up the originally entered key. So I am kind of stuck. Does anyone know what other files need to be removed for a truly clean uninstall because clearly trashing the app a…

I am fairly new to FMP - currently using version 18. I would like to figure out a way to auto-populate a text field based on the selection of multiple different checkbox selections (each checkbox selection refers to a different value list selection). For example if I had three different check box fields as follows - "colour"(red,green,blue), "shape" (square,circle,triangle), "size" (small,medium,large) - if the user selected "red" in the first, "circle" in the second and "large" in the third I would want my auto-populated text field to read "red, circle, large" or something similar (doesn't have to be punctuated, could also have each word on a new line if easier?). I have a database that displays a movie in a container. I just provide a path to the video file, using: moviemac:/VolumeName/Clips/name-of-clip.mov Under Mojave, it works perfectly every time. Under Catalina, the movie fails to show. Same FMP 19, same path, same solution, same files. The only difference is Catalina. I have given FMP Full Disk Access and access to Files and Folders in System Preferences. Any ideas? Thanks.

For some reason, I can't create new portal records or edit existing record data in a new db I created in 19. That feature is enabled in the relationship panel, but it doesn't work. Can't find any reason why. No the fields aren't overlapping the portal boundaries. I checked an old db created in an earlier version and the feature works fine inside 19, but not the new one. Possibly it's because the relationship is set up for many to many (not one to many as it should be); Can't seem to change that either. Any ideas? This is the first new db I've done in 19, just getting used to it.

How can I keep two tables in sync? I have two tables, Table1 and Table2. Each table has the field Item and the number of records is the same in each table. I would like to be able to make changes in one table and have them updated in the other table so that the list of items is the same in both tables. That is, when a record is created, deleted or an item is edited it one table the other table will update to match the changes.

Assistance please. I have a an app originally designed for a desktop environment and I did the unpardonable crime of having the user scroll down to complete all the required fields within the record. There are many. They moved the app to web direct and now we are at the mercy of the browser restrictions. Poor planning on my part to be honest. Here is my issue I have a portal at the bottom that allows the user to add custom categories. And they can add as many as they like. Problem is once they add one category the browser pushes back to the top of the layout and requires the user to scroll back down to the portal to enter another category and then it pushes them back…

While using FM Pro (19), accessing hosted databases, my interactive container fields automatically download their content. This happens on Pro, but not on Webdirect. Has anyone else experienced this? I first thought there was a layout trigger firing something, but the problem seems to occur on any layout, regardless of active triggers.

Hi folks, I am fervently hoping that someone out there has a possible explanation for the following. In a file accessible to our clients uniquely via WebDirect, at a time when only our newest user was logged in, 2 invoice records went missing several days ago, presumably deleted... except that there is no delete button for the invoice on that layout. A bit more info: the invoice layout contains a portal to a child table for individual sales items and the Invoices table does have record creation/deletion privileges over the Sales table. Basically the setup is as follows: 3 Tables: People, Join-PeopleTask, and Tasks The Join-Table relationships are working well to manage individual people attached to a Task. Adding new Tasks happens in a Form Layout based on the Tasks Table. It shows a detail view of each Task and then the people attached to it (in a portal). We are curious if we can add a way to click on (select) a person from this portal and based on that selection, have another portal below display what other tasks that person is attached to. Maybe I'll get lucky and get some answers. First, I get all the updates but been using FM12. Ready to switch. I had all the downloads but I need some king of key file for 18 server and the link disappeared. Now we're stuck Second. Once we somehow create the new FM 18 server, Can I move my files slowly by having FM12 and FM18 on each workstation at the same time and use whichever I need? I would need the 12 until I update all workstations and move all server 12 files over. Am I making any sense? Need help quick, pleaaaase! Mike

We are upgrading from FMS16 to FMS19. We let our license agreement lapse and now are having to buy new Filemaker 19 client licenses "for Teams" (with the server included). We previously had perpetual named-user licenses, but are now considering buying perpetual concurrent licenses (at about half the number of the named-user licenses). We use external authentication (active directory) for our named-user licenses. Please explain any differences, if any, between active directory authentication for named-user and concurrent licenses? Hi, we are having an domain network in which all the local users connects to different machines depending up on the availability. Problem is whenever a person connects to a new system i.e. filemaker host is never set up before, all ways need to go to setting and set up host for that particular user. Hi, I am trying to hide an object on a report other than in the Part 'Body'. All other parts i.e. sub-summarys etc it is to be hidden. I understand how to do this using the function Get(PageNumber) used in the 'Hide Object When' but depending upon the record I am viewing the records within the body can be anything from 7 pages to 60 pages long. I suppose I am after something like Get(ReportPart) ≠ Body. This function doesn't exist however. Please could someone point me in the right direction on how to refer to the Body Part in a report. I seem to be able to get one array worth to process, but I can't get any deeper than that. Open the Sandbox3 file: Select the two red buttons in the upper left to open a couple additional windows. Hello all, I have a button setup to print as a pdf. What I want to do is: When that button is pressed, the save dialogue box will already have the serial number and date added to the filename from the serial number and date field for that particular record.. When I attempt to 'learn' a word, "Learn" is greyed out. The dictionary I have selected is: /Applications/FileMaker Pro 16 Advanced/Extensions/Dictionaries/User.upr . When I attempt to edit that dictionary, I get: "The User Dictionary file is Read Only." I created a solution for a client. The solution took a pile of their data and with a bunch of scripts, etc. produced analyses and reports. They liked it and wanted me to do the same thing with a different dataset. So I duplicated the database file, deleted all of the records and imported the new dataset (from a spreadsheet). Rinse and repeat. I now have four different files with four different datasets. Everything works great, but the problem is that every time I fix or add something in a script, I have to do it four times. This is cumbersome and error prone. So maybe I didn't approach this correctly. Is there a better way?

This is kind of a unique situation. When working with Open Library: You can call for Cover images by creating a URL with the ISBN.. and if the Cover is available, it will show up. e.g.: "http://covers.openlibrary.org/b/isbn/" & ISBN::ISBN_Search & "-L.jpg" will give you the image in a web viewer. Literally, the image only, which is actually a different URL that is not really able to be created via calculation. Otherwise a simple Insert From URL would work. If I drag that image to a container.. I predictably get the actual URL of the image. I want to get that image from the Web Viewer into a Container field with -external- storage. So I …

I previously used ODBC Manager (32 bit) to great success importing data directly from Filemaker Server to JMP. I recently upgraded to Catalina (MacOS 10.15.5) and knew that one of the casualties would be this ODBC utility. Good day All, I'm an amateur Filemaker "developer" building inhouse solutions for various needs like planning and I'm trying to makes things less cumbersome with regards to security where all users are setup in each and every file. Hello all! This is my first post on any forum ever. I've scoured the internet to find a solution to this persistent problem I'm having and all of my research has led me here. As a new user, even the basic structure of a solution seems to have hundreds of options for getting started. I'm hoping someone can enlighten me on how to achieve the following: I have a Main Menu layout that works off of a "Main Menu" Table. I would like to be able to generate a printable form or ticket from my application. I am new to filmmaker and I am switching over from Access. In Access I would do a mail merge in word and select records and print from there. I would print 2 records on a page thus making two "tickets" that I could use to add information to and have in a paper file. help!! I have tried doing a report and a form but I am having trouble getting it to fit (2 on a page) and to have the look of a form or ticket with boxes. Hi, I would like to make the spell-as-you-go function bilingual. I understand I can change the language completely, but that way I'd always have a lot of records with the wrong language setting, as entries are made in German and English. Using separate fields would lead to loss of information as some would only read their language. Thinking about combining dictionaries or defining the other language as user dictionary. Maybe importing a lot of words in the user dictionary? Anyone any ideas? Experiences?

Hi, I wonder if someone might be able to help me. We own a pub and I am trying to collate all our recipes. Among other things, I want to print labels that we stick on to any pre-made items, but would like to include all the ingredients. I've got a table for the menu and then a related table that lists all the ingredients. Is there a way of bringing the list of ingredients into one single string like you see on food packaging. The labels can't be too big so listing them a line each would be too much. Thank you!

SOLVED! I tried to insert the file in a container field in a portal. As it seems, PSOS has an issue with "Insert from URL" into a container field in a portal. PSOS is now using a different layout with a flat hierarchy. I have this strange thing when I insert a PDF from URL ("Insert from URL" script step) while "perform script on server" I get error code 1 ("User canceled action"). This is strange, as I do not consistently get the error. In my case, I am exporting an invoice to PDF (Save records as PDF) to a path, and then convert the path to a URL and insert the PDF from the URL. Please note that in either case, PSOS or local, the sub-scripts go …

A google search reveals that FMP not recognizing modifier keys is at least a decade old problem. It's hard to resist making some kind of a comment but I will resist. At any rate, it seems that restarting the computer, at least on a Mac, resolves the problem, (until it pops up again). My question is this: Is it understood what is it in the restarting process that corrects the problem, and if it is, is it something that can be imitated with some kind of script, command, etc? Thanks

I find it odd that FileMaker is so intuitive yet hides access to the file name of the data source during importing. It looks like the only way I have found based on posts on the forum is to import the Data Source file as a reference into a container field. That is an extra step that shouldn't have to be done since FileMaker sees the Source file name during multiple points in the import process. Here are three dialogs where it's seen during import. There has to be a way to use the input file name with some kind of Get Function. Please help!

Firstly by telling if it is even possible I have a customer contact database that I use to keep track of clients that use our services on an annual basis. We are event photographers, and we are not guaranteed that a given client will rebook us every year, so I need to keep track of who the current contact is, what we offered them and so on and so forth. I've been saving various files - mostly pdfs - in FM container fields, for years. A script triggered by clicking in the field allowed the field to be exported for viewing. I'm still on Filemaker 17 and was surprised when looking at a colleague's computer to see that Filemaker 17 doesn't support Windows Emoji's, and wondering if that's been fixed in Filemaker 18 or 19? Hello, I was hoping to get some help with a Sales database. I have a table called "Worksheet" that the user will be working from. There is a portal that pulls up items to sell and allows the user to select different options for that item. The table that has the items as records contains multiple items of the same name, but different options. For instance, there are two items called 1" Flanged Nozzle. One of those items has a 50 PSI option and one has a 150 PSI option. Each option has a different price. I can ping my PDF document server from Terminal, I can connect to the PDF document server from all browsers apart from Safari, my default web browser is FireFox, I also tried to change to Chromium and Opera as the default web browser. Over the years, we've run into a situation where two people try to access the same record at the same time. A message is displayed saying "Name (username) is modifying this record. You cannot use this record until Name (username) is finished." Two responses are offered "Send Message" and "OK". If you click "OK", the message simply comes up again, so as well as being locked out of the record you are effectively locked out of using Filemaker. Apologies if I've put this in the wrong place. My Filemaker solution uses a FM database and an ODBC connection to a MySql database that is used to serve data to a website. I have complete read/write access to the data in the MySql database from inside FM and thus control of data published on the site. I would like the MySql database to be able to access tables in the FM database in the same manner. I have set up an FM ODBC connection to our FM server and that is visible in my local ODBC Manager, have tested the connection and that is good, but I can't see any way in the MySql apps I have installed on my system to create a table in the MySql database us…

The current file format has been active since FMP12. Judging by previous versions and how often file compatibility gets broken, it seems we're due for a new file extension soon. I'm at the point where I need to update a complex database that was created in FMP11. It's not an emergency so I'm debating wether it's worth waiting another 18 months or so until we get FileMaker 20 to convert it to .fmp20 directly. But if we know there won't be a new file extension, I'd start now in FMP18. Do we have any intel on FileMaker 20 file compatibility? Cheers!

A simple problem: I want to add a number to a time and get the end time to express AM or PM. For example: Start time = 10:00AM Duration = 3 hours End time = should be 1:00PM I can't figure out how to make this work.

Hi, I am trying to do something rather simple. I have a list of 5 charges for my business, each in their own field. I have defined a value list of each of the charges as a checkbox set. So. What I am trying to do is enter the appropriate value to the fields based on items selected in the checkbox set. Fee 1 - 1700 Fee 2 - 225 Fee 3 - 150 etc. How would I set it up so that if Fee1 is checked, then 1700 gets automatically entered into the field "Fee 1"? I know the basics of "if this then that" but just can't figure this one out! Any other suggestions welcome as well. Thanks so much! Jerry

I currently use FMP Advanced 18 on several personal projects (and also enjoy playing around with it). When Claris announced an upcoming version 19, I read a number of articles and posts hypothesizing that Claris was going exclusively(?) to a subscription plan aimed at corporations and smaller shops. I have been buying the upgrades almost every year/every other year (depending on what advances each new version contained). So, basically, in a nutshell: If I just have a relationship setup and use that related field on the layout, I'm forever going to see the oldest entry ever made under that relationship listed there unless I've got some sorting method applied in that layout or to that relationship? First <--> Oldest, meaning if I add 0, 1, 2, 3, entries .. and at a later date delete 1 & 2, add a 4, 5, 6... that 3 being the oldest in the relationship at that point would be the one I would see in that field? This part should be a different thread anyway.

Hi, I'm new to 360works so I'm using the demo version of Scribe. I have a problem with the plugin. The plugin seems to only load one document. When I tried loading other document .docx it would always load the first document. It seems that it loads the first document and keep it as a copy in the plugin and re-use it again and again. Is it because I have a demo version?

Since we can see values from a related table why would we ever need to enter those values into the related table itself, i.e., entering a company name (either via a Lookup (not recommended) or by Insert Calculated Result in Field Options). I have been attempting to connect to a SQL database on my network using Monkeybread Software and each time that I attempt to do it I have encountered the same error, which I have attached here. Hello Please can anyone tell me if it is possible to export a PDF from FileMaker with one field which is a text field so that a user can enter their name in the form field. I do not want to read the text back or export the data at all. The PDF will be saved and sent back via email by the users. The field will contain the name of the person. In the past the client has exported the records as PDFs and added the field in Acrobat and saved the PDF again. This has been time consuming. Is there a plug in which would do the job? I’m trying to get the average value of a field on a found set. But it’s not working. Cost is a number field and I use the following script steps to get the average value. Perform Find $$Avg=Average ( BGL::Cost ) But the resulting value is incorrect. Am I missing something. I assume Average works on the found set.

Hi Guys, I have a Script running a calculation for a Find. The table is in essence as follows Item Percentage Find Field My Script/Calculation is as follows: I have an identical Script with text relating to the item. This works perfectly. For some reason the calculated field isn't. The input for this Find Field is entered as a decimal number (the setting of the the field turn it into a percentage). Hi Guys, I'm back, with some final (hopefully) questions on Reporting. Assuming the Data looks like this: I can create Reports from the Item, Type, etc that's easy. What I'm struggling with is the following: 1. Making a Report which is sorted by Type, but only where the Qty is above 0. So where Bread, Cheese and Crackers would be excluded. 2. Making a Report which shows the 'top 10' owned, and 'bottom 5' owned - based on qty field. 3. As a beginner I’m working on a book database, comprising a table with several book specification fieldnames like e.g. title, author, editor, price, category, publication year etc. I would like to include some histograms on e.g. actual number of items per category, items per publication year. FMP help and internet don’t seem to provide distinct information. I am sorry if this question was already asked here, but I couldn't find the exact answer to it here or elsewhere yet. And I am new to the Filemaker administration so please forgive me the use of the wrong terminology. I am starting to work with a database that contains a bunch of sensitive data, so I am looking for a way to copy the database structure including tables, relationships and layout without the data content (records) in order to work on that "empty" database to include new tables, change the layout, implement new functions and scripts before applying changes to the original database. I'm having trouble with FMPA 18.0.3.317 creating a runtime. Even with the simplest file, I create it and when it runs it immediately crashes with the following in the crash report: Exception Type: EXC_CRASH (Code Signature Invalid) Exception Codes: 0x0000000000000000, 0x0000000000000000 Exception Note: EXC_CORPSE_NOTIFY Termination Reason: Namespace CODESIGNING, Code 0x1 I did the exact same thing with FMPA 17.0.6.600 and it worked fine. Any suggestions as to what's going on here and how I might fix it? Thanks!

So, the time has come. Runtime support is gone in 19. This puts me in a quandary. At my company, I have a handful of small apps that do nothing but import CSVs and print labels with barcodes on Zebra label printers, or packing slips with pictures for each item. These are one-off special purpose databases. There is no active data management. The scripts clear out the DB and import a fresh CSV on each run. I have tried making these applications work with Server, to no avail. I doubt anything has changed in 19. I can understand Claris wanting to move to an online subscription-based model, but the problem is that the server version is not at feature parity with…

Hello, I am wondering if there is a way to do a lookup that has to reference more than one source field to find a matching value. For instance, I need to lookup a price of an item, but the item has various options such as size, thickness, and material type. I need the price field on the related table's portal to lookup the item price based on whatever the user choses for the three options mentioned earlier. I am not sure if there is a way to do this with the Lookup function in a script or if I have to approach it differently.

So I compiled a runtime with FM18 running on 10.15. Client says it won't open on his machine with 10.14. My instructions were: 1. Open Terminal app 2. Type codesign --remove-signature 3. Drag the application icon into the Terminal window. This procedure made the runtime work on my machine, but it's a different OS. I really don't understand the ins and outs of this codesign stuff, but I would like to know if perhaps you know some trick that will make the runtime work. Thanks, Stefan

Hello, I am new to filemaker and using filemaker advanced pro 18. Im building a database for my patients who are admitted to the hospital. I would like help please with the following: 1) when I discharge the patient, the patient’s data are “archived” and not shown on the report. However, when the patient gets readmitted to the hospital, I would like to: 1) add patient by the hospital chart number 2) if patient is in the archive list, then activate and use the old data but under a new encounter to the hospital. whats the best way of doing this? I recently purchased FM18, upgrading from 16. I find myself bemused by the "new" requirement to login again to a database, after a period of inactivity. Is there a way to adjust the inactive interval, make it shorter or longer? That dialog that flashes by in about 0.1 seconds when the last re-login is completed, what does it say? Thanks!
