Hi to all, I am working to the optimization of a database, the database was created an mainteined by FileMaker6 Pro. I have to redesign the database because now the database presents performance problems. Let me know how I can monitor the activity of the database. I would like to analyze the queries on the database , the frequency, the response times of the queries, the list of updates, the relations more involved in the database activity. How can I do this? The new portal filter feature is interesting and apparently a little controversial. Like FileMaker itself, and many other features within FileMaker, (think repeating fields for example) the feature may be quite valuable but should be used with an understanding of its limitations. For instance, we could just simplify our graph greatly. Create a Session table, create an X-relation from that table to every other table in the database, and use a filter Evaluate( $$filter). Just something to keep in mind. FileMaker Server Advanced 11 uses it's own ODBC Driver and no longer uses the DataDirect. This is great by the way since I've seen the Datadirect files get dinged up on occassion. I assume this will add stability. If you are using the ODBC on a 64-bit System there is something to keep in mind. Filemaker doesnt support Windows 2008 Server 64-Bit ODBC Data Source Adminsitrator. In our situation we publish to a SQL Server database from FMS and I see that in order to set up the System DSN you will need to run the 32-Bit ODBC Data Source adminsitrator, which is located in the C:WindowsSysWOW64 odbcad32.exe. hi all, i wanted to upgrade my 8.5 advanced to 10 adv on my laptop also because i'll be on teh road for a week. this has worked fine on my desktop intel, but my powerbook g4 just spits out the disc without any message. any idea why it does that. no, it's not the drive and the disc is also ok (popped it in my desktop ok). thanks for any ideas.

I haven't gotten my hands on FMP 11 yet, so it may be that this idea won't work. But it occurs to me that by saving a snapshot link, then embedding the snapshot into a container field using Insert File, we have a simple way of creating "saved found sets" without complicating our schema. Has anyone tried this yet? The idea has a "strange loopy" quality that I find very appealing.

Hey all... Just a comment, maybe a lady canine and whine... Ver. 7 was released in 2004 Ver. 8 in 2005 Ver. 8.5 in 2006 Ver. 9 in 2008 Ver. 10 in 2009 Ver. 11 in 2010 Working for a small company where I am the only one who knows what Filemaker is, keeping up to date with each version is almost impossible. New FMP11 Portal filtering feature does not seem to work when filtering based on a global. Here are some calculations I tried entering in the "Each portal record will be visible when:" dialog... IsEmpty (Table::globalfield) or ( PortalTable::field = Table::globalfield ) ...all records show up regardless of what is in Table::globalfield IsEmpty (Table::globalfield) ...no records show up, even if the global field is not empty PortalTable::field = Table::globalfield ...no records show up, even if fields match BUT - change globalfield to a regular field, and everything works as expected (related records only show up in the case of a field match …

Hi, I don't know how I manage to do this, but I was able to open two instances of FMPA11 under the same session. I tried to replicate this but I was not able. As I posted a few months back an I was able to identify that an error occurs under the folowing conditions invloving FMS 10 on a Windows 2008 Server. If you set up FMS to customize the "Server Name" in the General Settings on the Filemaker Server console (not taking the default name of the server), the client will crash when attempting to insert an object into a container field. This was a registered issue at FMI. Now I see that the same issue exists in FMS 11. What gives? Either eliminate the ablity to edit the server name or fix it... It's not that it's a game breaker, but just incase anyone is deploying FMS 10 or 11 on a 2008 server, leave the server name as is. …

I was working in my FMP7 file when I had a power outage. When I tried to open the file, I was unable to open it and was prompted to use the Recover command. The Recovered file retained most of the data, however, the "Find" function has been disabled. Could someone help me with this?

I'm experiencing an issue playing quicktime video in FileMaker 10 on a Windows 7 Ultimate platform. The video plays and the progress bar moves, but dosen't display a video (the video are is white). The video I tried dosn't have sound so Im not sure if the sound is affected. Has anyone else experienced any problems like this? For smart people out there: Is there any reason why it used to be so easy to relate tables and not being at risk of going crazy if by mistake you touch the wrong path? All of my fields went "". Thank God for back ups' cause I spent hours trying to figure out how or what I did to years of work!. I suspect filemaker pro drew a line from FM7 on. I love FM, but it looks like certain things don't make sense to me, i.e you grab 3 related files working smoothly, just terrific relationships (HEY, all done by me!), then you are so happy that decision is made to use the same files with a different name and in another folder.... what a nightmare!.. tough I managed to make them …

I haven's seen any recent posts about 64 bit and FileMaker 10. I had already ordered a Win 7,64bit machine but it has been delayed until Jan 2010. But sounds like I'm wasting my money if FileMaker 10 still only supports 32Bit. Does anyone have any information about this? Thanks .....

I have a user that has a new laptop that has the number pad on the right. When he chooses numlock it causes the field to tab on enter. If he turns off numlock (which renders the number pad useless) the enter functions again. How do you allow this to function without numlock on/off all the time? Thanks Thom

At the kind request of Ocean, I will keep my tone down, but frankly I'm outraged by what I discovered (and it really deserved all the vernacular in the world) : The Show/Hide status script steps actually changes the window whole dimensions of the window. So If you create a new window with a 400 pixel height and that you're currently with the status bar enabled, and then decide to Hide the status bar the new window will shrink to 400-106 pixels ! Of course it didn't happened in FMP 9. So now you have to check your status bar status if you deal with windows. Thanks you FM Inc for this blatant lack of polish for a 18 month, +1.0 version. Hi there I have been using FMP7 on an iMac no probs. I have now needed to move FMP7 onto a PC. All is well - except I have a folder called "Scanned Documents" over 5,000 images - mostly TIFF and some JPEGs. Each of these images is represented by a Container Field in FMP7. I want to default FMP7 to open the Container Field that I click (Scanned Documents) can anyone please advise me on what I need to do? When using the iMac I would simply click on one of the Container Fields - this would then open the image - retreived from the Scanned Documents folder - I need to do the same on the PC.

Im making a contract database, and have basically finished it up, but today the print button is greyed out. I dont know why. Im working on the file, not the stand-alone program. I've never changed permissions, so it shouldnt be that. - I've tried to print every layout, and the print button is greyed on on every page. - I can print from other programs, and i can copy + paste the layouts into other programs and print. - I'm runnign Snow leopard 10.6.1, but had no problems a few days ago. I'm working on upgrading our FileMaker 6 solution to the latest and greatest, FileMaker 10. My FileMaker sales rep says that running databases via FileMaker Pro 6 (even if hosted on FileMaker Server) on modern operating systems subjects my database to corruption. We've got several Windows XP, one Windows 2000 workstations running FM 6 and on the Mac side, it's mostly 10.5, some 10.4 and one 10.3 (no Snow Leopard 10.6 yet). I won't deny that I've seen the spinning beach ball on some 10.5 installations and I've chalked it up to PowerPC code running on Intel Mac OS X. Hi guys, Tried to have a look about the site to see if I could find anything, but I cant. Right, here's the story. We have 3 FM10 licences. One of the PC's (PC A from now on) has crashed and wont reboot from its hard drive. I can, thankfully, use the hard drive from it as a slave on another PC (PC . Now, is there anyway of getting the licence from PC A's hard drive? PC B already has filemaker installed on it, so i assume that that version of FM will open up? I'm not really into computers, but can do more than the basics if explained to me. I should also explain, that at present, we can't get access to the store room where the licence keys are stored. …

I am running OSX 10.6. I was looking at a v5 .fp7 file and when I clicked the 'quit' button I got a system message that said I had to hold the power button to shut my Mac down and then press it again to start. I did this. Upon start up, when I click my FM icon, the splash screen comes up and it says ...loading in the lower left corner then it closes. I can not start FM??? I have restored from my backup. No help. Just upgraded to FM 10 advanced and overall I like the changes; except for the status bar not being customizable. It just sits their taking up a lot of real estate if you can't add or reduce its size. Sure you can turn it off, but then your navigation is limited to the menus and few other tool bars you can add. I think Filemaker choose form over function on this idea!

Hi there, I have a script that exports a container field's contents to Mac share. It receives the filename/path by way of a variable. This script was working perfectly last year on a G5 (non-Intel) iMac running Tiger and FileMaker 8 Advanced. This year, the Mac was upgraded to an Intel iMac running Leopard. As far as I can tell, nothing else has changed.. but now, the Export Field Contents step of the script is failing most of the time. Hi all, Filemaker 9 flickers a lot while minimizing windows and it takes a while to select tables. On a brand new database with a single table ... when I open the Manager (the table chart-view) and click on a table, I can literally watch it GROW the orange glowing highlight rectangle. It draws it in slow motion starting from the inside perimeter and then adding progressively more transparent rectangles to form a gradient. Has anyone else experienced something like this ? Does anyone know of an easy way to send text messages through Skype without using an external plugin? If it is at all possible? Like for example an Open URL request to "skype:+[insert cell phone number]?sms would open the text message interface in skype, with the correct number, but would not actually send anything. I'm fishing for something like Open URL "skype:+[insert cell phone number]?sms & text="this is a text message" that would actually call the skype interface and send the text message. Do I make sense? I'm new to FM Pro. I'm doing sql select from an application on a table using the FileMaker Pro odbc driver. I am able to get results if the set is small by using the where clause to minimize the result set. I want to get the entire table however. When I take out the where clause to get the table it appears that the odbc driver is timing out. I get the error message, 'An attempt to fetch forward has failed for table: xxxx'. FM Pro version is 6.0. The driver version is 3.60. It's a c#.NET application. I'm using OdbcDataAdapter. I would appreciate any advice. Thanks in advance.

Hey everyone, i'm new to the forums. Hoping to get a push in the right direction with a minor issue that i can't seem to resolve. I'm hosting about a dozen or so custom filemaker databases from Mac OS9, in FM5. My users are all utilizing FM5 from Mac OS X 10.5.7, via network. I purchased FileMakers prebuilt FM Work Requests Application on Filemakers Presales statements (and FM website info) that the FM Work Requests Application could be served via IWP via FM 7 Server Advanced. The FM Work Requests Application Users Guide says the app can be served via FMNet and/or IWP via FM 7 Server Advanced. Yet much to my surprise, the FM Work Requests Application can NOT be served via FM 7 Server Advanced via either FMNet and/or IWP. I have FMP 3 installed on the same machine and everything works fine. The G5 has OSX 10.4.11 on it as that is the last operating system that will run the classic environment. The installer file for FMserver has a ".mbn" extension, that no application is associated with. Apple says all they can do is reinstall classic. Filemaker doesn't support any version 7 or older. I'm playing around with an emulator called sheep shaver, but I don't have very high hopes for it. Please tell me one of you guys knows what i'm doing wrong, I dread updating the whole database to a new version (yes, even though this one is 13 years old).

Since upgrading to V10 I have noticed a few odd occurrences when using "insert calculated resulted" script step. It seems to place the data in the wrong field. It had all been working fine in 9 but since the upgrade it has been problematic. It doesn't happen all the time, it seems to vary from script to script and some can be solved by running the step while in a different layout and switching back. All very odd. Any ideas? Thanks Rufus

Does anyone know of a way to acquire a filemaker 6 install disk for mac? I have lost my only copy. I have two license keys, but Filemaker no longer supplies replacement media. I realize it may be slightly uncool to ask, however we have already purchased 10 licenses of FMP 10 and Server 10, and are in the process of converting. I've read the announcement page on FileMaker's site pretty carefully, and I can find no reference to being able to enter data in SQL fields. Phrases such as "...add SQL data to FileMaker Pro solutions...", "...include information located in SQL systems", and "You can create new information by adding supplemental calculation and summary fields to the SQL table," imply you cannot add data to fields directly. Is this just a case of a poorly-written announcement?

Export Field Contents on a field with a file reference (to a .pdf file set to open in Preview on one machine anyway) causes FM to unexpectedly quit, before getting to the export file window. I have the crash report if of any use -- a bit of it here: Exception Type: EXC_BAD_ACCESS (SIGBUS) Exception Codes: KERN_PROTECTION_FAILURE at 0x0000000000000008) Tested on more than one file. One thing that I've noticed with FM Pro 10 (and advanced), is that when the program is running and has around 50 hosted files open, the idle CPU usage is about 25%. To clarify - the files are being hosted by FMServer 10 on a separate machine. When running FM 9 with the same scenario, the CPU usage is around 8%. This isn't really a problem with desktop computers, but we're also running a Citrix server for outside sales people. After three people log in and run FM10, the CPU usage is maxed out. Which is unacceptable, considering that on a normal day anywhere from 5-10 users will be on at a time. The same scenario is present whether it's being run on XP…

So i had an old ATI 64mb dual vga video card at work on my Dell Dimension 3000. I just installed a new GeForce 9400 GT with dual VGA outputs. In addition to this, i have a 3rd (primary monitor) connected to the onboard vga. Anyway, so i updated all drivers, for computer and whatnot. And everything works fine and dandy. Except for my FMP 8 advanced! The program loads fine, however no matter what database i open, they all appear distorted (see attached file for snapshot) FMP works fine on my onboard vga output, but either of my 2 other montiors connected to the new card display that! What gives??

HI My clients are reporting this "bug" more and more and I cannot seem to figure out if it is my solution or a bug in filemaker. What seems to be happening is the default keyboard changes to USA if UK was default.This only seems to be the case in filemaker eg In flemaker ( UK keybaord is default ) you select Shift 2 and expect to get a " but instead you get a @ but then you go to word and select shift 2 and you get a " Why if you have UK as default keyboard do you get an @ symbl when yo select shift 2. I want to uninstall FM9 (recently installed FM10). I understand that I now have to deactivate the copy of FM9 before I can uninstall. According to the Help file that would normally be done under the Help menu but since this is a volume licensed copy, according to FM Knowledge Base, the Deactivation option is not available. FM Knowledge Base (Answer ID 6470) offered a couple of resolutions. 1. use a file with the options available, 2. close and then re launch Filemaker. The first is not an option and the second didn’t work (didn’t really make any sense to me). Any suggestions on how to deactivate a volume license copy of FM9? Thanks Nor

This was a doozy. I am converting our files from FM 5.5 to 8.5 using FileMaker Advanced 8.5v1 (currently downloading the updater). I am using an iMac running 10.5.2 with a 2GHz Intel Core 2 Duo. I had just finished tweeking the last script in one particular file (I'll call it Fred.fp7). Next step is to go to the folder and change the color label on the file so I can quickly see which files I've modified and which ones I have yet to do. Win XP FMP Advanced 10.0v2 I use images/icons throughout my solution (e.g., trash can icons, sort ascending/descending icons, arrows, etc) that I copied from the FM Graphics Pack and elsewhere. In FMP 9.0v3 (Win and Mac) they display perfectly. In FMP 10.0v2 (Mac) they are perfect, but in Win XP they display with white backgrounds (see attachment). FileMaker 10 crashes randomly and frequently on several of the PCs we have here. There is no pattern to when it crashes, no consistency at all. Sometimes it comes up with the standard Windows "This application has crashed" window, and sometimes FileMaker just quits. It's been happening when the computers are clients of Server 9 on a LAN, but it also happens when local files are open. It's driving us nuts as there's no pattern as to when it crashes, so it's hard to know where to start solving the problem. Anyone else have similar problems? or more importantly any solutions?

Win XP FMP9 Adv I just purchased FMP10 Adv but I want to continue to develop in FMP9 Adv for the next 6 months. Can I install 10 on my computer to explore and learn the new features, and still continue to develop in 9 without any problems? When I did this during the last upgrade (8.5 to 9), it seemed that all of my 8.5 files defaulted to 9 and I had no control. My users will not convert to 10 until the fall and I'm going to have to redesign/reconfigure all database layouts (which make use of the left side status area) with the new status area at the top. Should I install 10 or wait? Thanks for any advice. lpm

Suddenly FM will not load. I get the general activation error 50040 when I try to start the program. I removed and re-installed FM with the license key, but I still get the same message. Is it me or has FMP 10 changed the way to obtain the contents of the first field of a repetition field. Many many scripts are having bugs suddenly. In FMP 9 it works perfect. Unless I use the GetRepetition( field; 1) they are not working properly. Quite a pain in the #$@@ : *sigh*

Server 10 Advanced installed on 2003 server Client is FMP 10 Advanced on XP SP3 box It seemed to be running ok yesterday, this morning I went in to play around a bit and when I tried to open any files. I recieved a coffee cup then it prompted me for a username and password. it is configured to use single-signon with external authentication. My account will not let me in to any files, I am able to open a file with a local filemaker admin account. I have a strange problem. I want to start my application with a layout called "menu" . I put this in my startupscript (go to layout "menu"). Switch to layout is empty. I also put in the logoff script thath app should go to layout "menu" before closing. But everytime I start up, I first see another layout where it makes all the calculations on that layout before going to the "menu" - layout. Does anybody know how to fix this problem ?

Since using FileMaker 10 Advanced, anytime I have clicked on the boundary between two columns to resize a column in a FileMaker dialog box (such as the Data Viewer and most of the Manage dialogs), I get about 5-10 seconds of the spinning beachball, then an application crash. This is on a Mac Pro running 10.5.6. Thought I would ask if anyone else has seen this before I make an official bug report.

I'm not new to Filemaker, but with ver 10 I wanted to make a dedicated effort to understand the principles behind the bundled Starter Solutions. I figured I might pick up a tip or two from Filemaker. I had a couple of layouts in my existing solution that contained a header and body. The header contains certain graphics that I want to be in a fixed position while those in the body part move underneath the header when I scroll down. I just noticed that it's not happening anymore since I made some modifications to better match the new FM 10 interface. My backup copy seems to be functioning properly. Did I do something, turn something on or off, or what am I missing? What would make it nt continue to scroll underneath the header?

I need a little help. I'm a longtime user of FileMaker Pro 6.0 Back in the day I did some heavy programming with it, but now I only use the ToDo list and contacts dB. The trouble is, I have a new computer, and when trying to install the software it asked for an installation ID/number etc...which i have lost. Tech support suggests I buy the new product because they don't support 6.0 anymore. Anyone out there have the old software and an installation code I could "borrow?" I actually have two issues, but they are somewhat connected. 1.) I have created a tab panel for the different layouts that I want to display, and then I have duplicated that layout to use as the "un-editable" layout that offers different scripted buttons etc. I have scripted movement through the tabs and layouts with buttons, so that it doesn't appear to be a tabbed environment. The problem that I am having is that one of my buttons is supposed to switch layouts, go to a particular tab, and then enter Find mode. In Filemaker Pro 9, when I open a database, the printer is set to the default printer in Mac OS X. This is very convenient since I can then specify the printer prior to using a database - particularly if I travel with the database from office to office. In Filemaker Pro 10, this behavior no longer exists. When I open a database after specifying a default printer in Mac OS X, Filemaker Pro 10 continues to use the previous printer. Since Filemaker Pro does not have a SET PRINTER command in Mac OS X, the only way around this is to print a blank page so that I can set the printer in the print dialog box. First post here so If I mess anything up now you know why. Just installed the trial version of 10 ( been using 5.03 ) when trying to use the mail command it opens up Eudora which is not my default email client ( as far as I can tell ) So I tried to solve the issue by removing all the files & referances I could find to do with Eudora. All that did was cause filemaker to give me an error telling me that the file was no longer there. Seems to me that the "Mail" entry in the ini file has to point windows to another file somewhere. Any idea how to find that file and redirect windows to open outlook instead? Thanks Randy

Hi, So FMP 10 automatically resorts a foundset if the sort criteria is changed. Good idea gone very bad for some use. Let's says I sorted my product list on their price, and I'm reviewing them to check and modify the prices. Let's say I've 200 SKU to review So If I change a price, the sku disapear from where I was looking, and so I'm loosing track about what I did review and what I did not review yet, and there's a lot of chance that I will be presented the same sku on the bottom of the list. Hi, I just bought FMP Advanced and have created 3 new databases. I would like to put a button that has 3 buttons on each database that would allow me to toggle between databases. I have never done this and really dont have a clue as to how to go about doing this. Can someone shed some light on how to do this. To clarify, I have 3 databases. Hello, with FM 10 the User can modify the Status Area and there´s nothing you can do to control this, except locking the Status area completely In our solution, adding a new record is made by a Button, trigerring a script, that is filling some data in special fields. As mentioned, we can lock the Status Area in browse mode. But in search mode? In search mode, you can´t lock the status area because the user should be able to do a search by omitting records! So far the only way for my other clients is to leave file maker open and running. Will the copy of the database that Time Machine backs up to the Time Capsule get corrupted? Can the database be backed up safely while it is open? On top if time machine I will be using Chronosync for nightly over the network backups as well. But again for the morning help to work we have to leave FMP open on our main iMac... Am I safe? Or am I risking corruption? Thank you for any help Damien

Hello I actually made a form well a layout that mimics a form I use daily and it seems to work great! But I have two questions. One is there a setting that will let me search records but not edit them? As in I search a case number it fills in the fields but any changes reflects on the table. I would like the data filled in but not able to edit it. Also I am learning on a test database that reflects our main. This of course is so I do not screw up the important one! hello FM Forum! I know this has been posted before but there was no response back in August. I have been running FM9 on a standalone PC in Vista Business and have had continual crashes. I have just upgraded my machine, though downgraded to XP but running 64-bit to address the 8 gb RAM installed. Does anyone know if FM Pro 9 will work with XP 64-bit op sys on a stand-alone pc (not Mac)?
