Hi all, This doesn't seem like the most difficult of problems - after all there is a simple script step to do it, but for some reason my script that looks like this at the beginning: Enter Browse Mode [] If [Get ( PrivilegeSetName ) = "[Full Access]" Show/Hide Status Area [show] Else Show/Hide Status Area [Lock; Hide] End If Refresh Window simply does not do what I think it should. Everyone sees the status area, regardless of their privilege set. Can anyone think of a reason why this does not work? I want to use IWP to publish the database, but this script does not do what it is supposed to do either on a server or run directly…

I have DB with many layouts and all of them are well organized in folders. I have made a navigation set of buttons so I can navigate through the main ones but I have some “auxiliary” layouts that is impossible to incorporate to the navigation set, it would be too big and made no sense. My idea is to add a new navigation button named “Aux” and I would like to make a popup that will show me the list of the Auxiliary layouts so I can choose any of them to go to it. Is that possible? I have no idea where to put this topic, so I stuck it here. Any input is appreciated as I am stumped. The Issue: We have a few workstations where the cursor flickers between the arrow cursor and the text cursor. 2 things: It does not happen 100% of the time, and it only happens on a few workstations. We are running FM Server 11 to about 15 workstations. Most workstations are Mac Minis. The computers that display this behavior are newer (late 2011) Mac Minis. I refuse to believe this is a corrupted system issue, but it's very possible I am wrong. Help?

Here's what I need to do. I have 3 fileds - Field1, Field2, Field3. Field 1 should be filled in first. Field 2 then gets filled in. Field3 depends on the following. If field1 is "x", Field3 should be blank. Otherwise, Field3 should equal to whatever Field 2 is with the option to be changed by the user to something else or blank. How to do it?? Mike

first of all I would like to apologize for my english. I'm a Dutchie. Second; I'm trying to get FM to tell me to total of the taxes on my invoices in all the quarters of this year. I've been searching and reading and trying but with little succes. I managed to get FM to tell the totals but I can't seem to split this in 4 quarters. I need this because I have to pay my taxes every quarter. I'm in the progress of migrating my administration from MsAccess to FM (advanced 11). I have IWP up and running. Pages look good on Mac and Windows and most work without a problem but I have some that if I even put a cursor in a field, IWP freezes. It matters not what browser or system I am on. One weird part of the url when I get this is "check status" Locally, the db runs without error but not in two of the pages which contain a portal and links/lookups to other tables. Any help on this would be terrific. TIA Bob Moran FMP 11 Advanced on Snow Leopard and Win 7. Ports 591 and 8080 were used with identical results. The pages will come back after several minutes but that, of course, is not acceptable. :)

I have two data bases both are set to have black the standard color of any text, in one the text in selected cells, can be colored, black to red act, in that data base I can highlight the cell and change the color of any of the text and it remains that color when I click out of that cell In the second data base if I highlight a cell and change the color when I leave the cell the color changes back to black when I go back to the cell the color changes back to the chosen color. I have a field called sCount which is a summary of the 'name' field. I would like to sort by sCount but I don't believe that I can because it is a summary field and it is greyed out in the sort dialogue box. I would like to sort my report by sCount descending because I would like to show the 'Name' with the most records first and so on in order to identify training priorities. Is there a way to do this? PS I did find a work round. I created a loop script that would enter sCount for every record of my found set into a number field. I then sorted using this number field and used as sub-summary on my report. Is there a cleaner way though?

I'm developing a tool for my staff which, let's say for the sake of this discussion, tracks sales per employee department (front of house, B2B, manager, etc.) Currently, I have a report that displays a simple, short list that looks something like: Front of House 217 B2B 198 Manager 72 (etc.) This report contains two fields. Is there a way to script a list view window to "resize to fit" properly? Resize to display only the found amount of records be it 2 or 22. When you use FMP's resize to fit function on a list view layout it maximizes the window height to very top and bottom of screen. Which looks odd when database is only displaying a couple records. The resize to fit function on a form view layout works in a nice way, list view not so much. Thanks for any tips! :D

A client has asked me to design a custom CRM system for his company to replace a legacy system. This client has some familiarity with FileMaker Pro. In initial discussions he is hot on the idea of using table view instead of list view layouts. I have created a subsummary report that ranks items by total sold. The total sold is the summary field. FM 11 Advanced. Something is creating windows when I switch from layout to layout (in layout mode). Then I get the message "This layout cannot be modified in this Window...". I then have to close the window. The Window menu displays for example, Costs, Costs-2, Costs -3, etc. I'm not running any scripts and none of my script steps create a Window. Of course, the FM Help has practically no info on Windows. Any suggestions on what could be causing this?

I have a pop up window that displays a Summary report layout. When I use Adjust Window [Resize to fit] at the end of the script, the window width shrinks to fit but the hight is maximized with a huge amount of blank space. I tried with all the different kinds of footers, including a trailing grand summary and even without a footer. No matter what I can't seem to get it to shrink up to the bottom row of the report. Any ideas?

Hello, I know there's a limitation of viewing 255 layouts in the layout dropdown on windows, but I was under the impression there wasn't a limitation on the mac. I currently have 56 layout folders with subfolders in each, but when I click on the Layout dropdown in the GUI, it only shows the first 17. I added a layout and that shows below the 17th folder, but none of the other folders show up. Any ideas what is going on? Thanks, John

Hi, I have some layouts presented in table view (only), and with a header that contains a series of buttons arrayed horizontally across the screen. This is to help colleagues that are more accustomed to Excel style data entry. However when a table contains many fields that go beyond the screen it becomes very inconvenient for the users to scroll back to the far left to use those buttons. Is there a way to make the header scroll sideways? Or more likely, an alternative that allows the user to see the button even if they are far far to the right side of the screen? Hey guys, i am new to the forum and start out with my first question. We are now migrating our severs to OSX 10.6 and are still working on the Filemaker 5.5 The problem that we encountered is that on some of our clients Filemaker doesnt display the data in certain layouts e.g. our invoice layout doenst show the data of the fields in the invoice. But if you print the invoice or you switch to our windows clients everything is showen properly. Please see enclosed the respecitve fotos. I run across this situation pretty frequently, and dang it, it's time to do it right! I've got a Table for EVENTS and a table for CONTACTS and a join table in between for INVITATIONS. On an EVENTS layout, I want to have a portal where the user can create INVITATION records by adding Contacts to the portal list. Let's say on the portal row I have Date, Name and Status, so you can enter a dozen names in there and see the list of when you invited each person and whether they've RSVP's or not. When I copy and paste the rectangle into the container field, and then overlay the container on top of the original graphic, there is a notcible color shift between the two of them. Hi there... Slightly irritating problem... i have done a lovely layout... it fits perfectly on my screen when filemaker is maximised (screen res is 1280 x 1024) Now I go and check the layout on another PC, same res, and the layout is rendered a few pixels wider and taller!! This is causing the scroll bars to be enabled and it just looks "off" Why is there this difference? Whats causing it? Aare there any settings in windows I should be checking? Hi all I have a layout divided into header body subsummary and footer - a button toggles between two views - form and list so that the subsummary doesn't show in list view I am trying to do a custom background by entering a series of graphics into the various parts and then sending to the back. The problem I have is that the graphic in the body part will not align exactly with the edges of the part (the dotted lines at top and bottom) so leaving a small gap when it is in browse mode The part boudarys will not align exactly with the grid lines or the tee square making it impossible to get them exactly aligned even if I resize the graphic So what I was wondering …

I am relatively new to filemaker, I have been working on a database and its coming nicely. All my layouts are looking good except 1. When i view it in form view all the fields and containers stretch out to the length and width of window. None of the other layouts do their, if i grab the right edge and drag it to the left on the other layouts it just cuts across the fields. But on this one it stretches and shrinks based on window size and shape. Hi, I've been searching around for a solution to this problem and can't find much on it. Nothing recent anyway, so I hope things have moved on. I've convinced my company to switch from managing our pricelists in Excel to FM. However, we had hyperlinks on all products codes which opened the product page on our website. Excel includes this information for exporting to PDF no problem, so the link is still active in the cirruclated PDF version. Really simple question! If I'm needing to truly align two objects, my intuition tells me they should both be an odd number of pixels in size, or both even. Would that be right? Okay -- follow up question. Hello I have some buttons which allow me to define some values which will help choosing the kind of report which should be created. The button sets a variable value (for instance to "details", "daily", "monthly") and the script acts accordingly. I have a portal where I'm using an ID field and want it to show a name, not the ID number. I used the value list, selected the popup menu option, defined the id as its name, used the 'show second value.' All the relationships are in place for this to happen. When in browse mode, clicking on the field shows the name list but the name does not persist. If you go to another layout and come back, there is the id showing, not the name. What is really puzzling is I am duplicating an example, and I swear that I followed it exactly. The example persists; mine does not. Any thoughts? Thanks!

I finally got around to implementing drag and drop functionality within our database. I've used this simple technique http://fmforums.com/forum/topic/62097-drag-and-drop/ mainly because it didn't need scripts (and I've looked at other methods and couldn't get my head around it). What happens is I drag a staff members name onto a shift. This then populates that the shift has been filled by this staff member. It all works perfect. The problem comes into it with our Availability table (shows when staff are available). Okay, this is a tiny question, but one that's bothered me for years. When I'm in layout mode starting a brand new project, I like to set the body part to the approximate the size of the window, and then I use the T-Square lines and the line-drawing tool to sort of sketch out how I might use the real estate. Or whatever. But always, getting in the way, is that squiggly vertical line that shows where the edge of the "page" would be. . . . but this is going to be a data entry layout, never printed. So why must I have this thing distracting me all the time? Ironically, the only way to hide it seems to be to choose "View Page Margins" -- which is even worse. …

Okay, this is somewhat embarrassing, but I can't seem to get a simple sub-summary part to display summary data properly. Table 1: Stocks -- 1 record per financial stock, with fields for Ticker, Manager (each stock only managed by 1 person), and a few others Table 2: Trades -- child table, 1 record per stock sale, w/ fields for date, # of shares, buy price, sale price, net $, etc. In the Trades table, I have various summary fields like "Total $ invested" and "Count of Trades" so that from the Stocks context I can see combined data for all trades of a single stock. Hi, I only program occasionally and feel as though I've overcome this before... but can't recall how I've 2 tables A and B, both can have more than 1 related record with the other, when I do a summary in A where B has more than 1 related record, I get the multiple A values (and therefore they all sum() ) they but I only want that value once, and visa-versa. I know I can create 2 layouts but Ideally I'll like to be able to do it on 1 hope if explained it properly thanks

Hello all I have been asked to design a table with a list of companies showing the various subscribers underneath Very easy main table - records by company then a join table to the main contacts database and show the subscribers in a portal However I have been asked to show the list of companies and then give the user the abilty to expand the record to see the subscribers as they see fit. I have a database I have been designing and I can not figure out how to get a relationship to allow me to type in fields that are on the main table. Here is my breakdown. I have a main customer table, I have an orders table and I have a customer visit table. I want my customer info stored on my customer table, and from my orders table I want to be able to type a customers name in the name field, and that automatically creates a new customer entry if the customer isn't already in the list. My main layout is a rats nest of over two hundred fields. Some fields are duplicated (aargh!) The layout body stretches down some 60 inches, and things are sometimes almost randomly placed. Yes, it's so messy that I can't find where one particular field is located on the layout. (is it over on the bottom left of the layout? On the right side, fifteen fields from the top?) Of course, I should clean things up. But to do so, I have to find the fields that show up two or three times on this layout. Quick background: I work for NASA and up until 2 years ago we were using FM here to do some of our work instructions. We have since gone to another system (which none of us engineers like) and I am now trying to put together a little demo to show my management that we need to switch back to FM so we can run paperlessly runing FM Go. I am using a radio button on my layout. To see the click button area I give it a stroke of 1 pt but when I do this I also get a line on the top and left hand side of my field box. In effects everything is set to none so I cannot figure out why this is happening or how to fix it. If I click off the stroke for the button the lines disappear but then so does my button. How do I get my button to show up with a stroked line and no lines to appear around my field box in the top and left hand side? As always any help would be appreciated. Hey Everyone; Got a question about printing a report or in my case the order/ invoice . what would be the best practice here in printing the report via all these tables eg. Customer->order->orderITEMS->Payments I NEED all this information along with other info such as "company information in case of emergency,etc" i am about to do a report, plug the data into a virtual list and after place all information into a table. If I create a value list with custom values and begin it with a carriage return before I type my choices, the pop-up displays a blank at the beginning so that the option is also to blank the field. But if I use the same value list and attach as radio button, it does not provide the blank 'circle'. Why is the behavior inconsistent? It makes sense not providing the blank on checkboxes because they can be unchecked but radio buttons can't. I read about using shift to 'remove' a radio button selection it does not seem like the right approach. I would have to put a message above all my radio buttons (which I will allow removal of data). I have a repeating field with 36 vertical repetitions. I would like each repetition to have visible borders around each one. When I turn on field borders for all 4 sides it only does the outside borders of the entire set of repetition fields. The other problem / trick is that the set scales with anchors set to top, bottom, and right so faking it with other objects is tricky at best. Any ideas?

As you can see in the photo attached my page margins don't match up with my layout ... I have searched everywhere and for the life of me cannot figure out how to specify the page layout/margins so they match the iPads screen size ... without changing the page margins for the entire database and regular computer layouts ... I tried to switch to landscape mode and that looked more fitting for the iPads screen size but then when i tried to print on another layout it printed incorrectly. Thanks, Matt 22.tiff

Hi - I have decided to replace a few drop down lists with small windows/layouts carrying portals. I have set the window height (via 'New Window') to 225px, but they always open at 167px. If I click in the window (outside the portal) the height changes to 235px! It does what I expect if I use a greater height measurement (eg: 445), but why is it ignoring me at 225? Is 235 a default minimum? And, if so, why is it opening at 167? It sets to 225 if I use Adjust Window (resize to fit) based on a background item, but I'd rather not use this.

Hello great fellow forum inhabitants! Ya'know how you can put your cursor in a field and then ctrl-i and it shows the index and you can even if you want, show word index (although I have no clue why you would want that)... Anyway, can I give person script to bring that open for them to select from? Okay, I think it is kinda handy and it might save me from having to create value lists all the time. I think it would need to be like this person has cursor in field then types (something) which does not type into the field to activate the script. Or maybe it is button on top of layout? Possible? I have a table A, which has multiple items for each record in a sub-table B, which itself has multiple items in each record for a sub-table C. The records in C are all from a Value List. I have text data which starts with a number, e.g. "1. Blah", "2. Blah", "3. Blah" .... etc. The data may also include "4a. Blah", "4b. Blah". The data is listed in a portal, and I want to sort the data by the leading number. Is there any easy way to do this, without 10 appearing between 1 and 2, but rather after 9....? I suppose I could put leading zeros, but I'd prefer not to. Thanks

If I show the Formatting Bar so people can see the bold, italic, underline, it works but it does not show all of the formatting listed in the menu, such as style. Why not? There is space for Style and all formatting options to fit across the status bar. Am I missing something obvious? Surely FM did not include Bold, Italic and underline but then forget everything else. I keep looking for the hidden button to show them.

Hi folks, I have a layout that is a template for printing CD labels. It never fails, however, that whenever I use it, it appears the whole layout needs slight tweaking to line-up properly with the CD labels I am printing on to. Since my file has users locked out of entering Layout mode, is there a way to somehow script buttons that can nudge all the objects on the layout up or down and left or right, by tiny increments, like say a few pixels? Currently the only solution is to enter Layout mode and select all the objects and manually nudge them. But if this could be accomplished in browse mode using scripted buttons, that would be great! It is late at night and maybe I shouldn’t be posting, but I can’t get this to work the way I think is should. Users are requesting a “Back” (and “Forward”) button. We all know that they won’t work “exactly” like a web browser, but they still want it. What I did was use the “onLayoutExit” script trigger to set the variable $$layout to the Layout Name (or ID). Then I have a “back” button/script that says Go to Layout "$$layout”…simple right? Well, my little brain can’t get it to work. The layout recorded is the Layout that I go to not the one exiting from. So the “back” is the same layout. Uhg. Why is this? Feeling dumb and frustrated…especially if a bug!

Hi, I used the Insert Picture to place an image but mistakenly got the images from another unrelated folder thats not distributed. The ruuntime test fine showing images on My Computer ...however when i install on a virgin machine.. I have missing images.. (forgot and distributed to a client ummmm) Here is the question.. How do i see the properties of path etc of a image.. and i don't think you can?? I am developing a simple invoicing solution, and I need to provide a report that has a summary of information from 2 other tables. For the life of me, I can't seem to figure out how to apply the date range to the calculation. to simplify: table1 = labor sales, table2 = Item sales (assume each has a date field) I need to create a report that gives me summaries for a date range, a page that just has "total labor sales for date range" and "total item sales for date range". Can anyone give me some pointers on how to get the numbers to reflect the date ranges. Perhaps I don't understand how the relationship needs to be setup. Thanks kindly

I am using FM 8.5 on a Mac with a database of 50 labels. i am using the supplied template for Avery label L7161 (18 labels per each A4 sheet) and it all lines up and prints lovely EXCEPT every 7th address in the database is not printed! I confirm that 18 labels are printed per page and that the page is set to A4. The labels are printed down and then across. Why would FM omit printing what would be the 7th (and, thus, off the page) label of every column? Any suggestions on how to remedy this situation? Roger

I have a simple report layout for my CRM database that shows a sales rep's activities. The CRM has tables for contacts and related activities. The layout shows records from Activities, with a summary count field for each contact in a trailing sub-summary, so you can sort the layout by Contact and see just one line per contact. There is no Body part in the layout, just the sub-summary. I control what the report displays using three global variable fields in the header: the sales rep's name (actually the ID underlies the name), the beginning date for the report and the ending date. I am trying to create a sub summary of certain data in my database. I have one table that lists patient IDs, and this parent table is linked with multiple child tables through this field. I would like to generate summaries of the number of patients who have certain qualities as specified in some of the child tables, such as a certain condition. I'd like to generate a list of such patients. While in patient list layout mode, I went to "insert" then "part" then sub-summary" and then specified a specific field from a specific table. However, nothing shows up after having done this. Can anyone please tell me why?

I'm new to Filemaker. I am constructing a database which shows as columns in Browse and Table modes. I have sub-summary and summary fields totalling columns by category. Problem: in the summary fields I get, for example, "Total: 1325.00". How can I avoid having the "Total:" and show only the numerical result? With multiple columns the text takes up too much space.

Hey Guys, I think i know the answer to this already, but if it is no, just wondered if you had any alternatives. Basically my clients want to convert the excel sheet they have into a layout on filemaker, or an export to excel. It is an availability sheet for staff. So there is a table called availability, which has a row per date per member of staff. The staff is referenced by another table via an id. Each date has three shifts the staff can select as available and not available. How do I leave a parent window restored (full-screen) when opening new window? Now when opening a new window with a small size, the parent window changes to something smaller.... You would have to restore the window once you close the current one... I have a 'Record ID' that requires a value from a value list... But the value list is 3000+ items and is simply to slow. So I want a new window where a simple search is done, the data can be selected and OK can be clicked. But the parent window resizing makes the screen jump and it's confusing for the enduser. Why does this happen anyway?

I really wasn't sure where to put this but thought it was more a presentation problem than anything. We're looking at adding a new feature to our solution where we can SMS staff with job details. The idea was to have a pop up window which displays a 'To' field and a 'Message' field. This layout is run by a temp table (sms_table) which will get cleared once the message(s) have been sent. They're going to be sent through email so all copies of the message will be stored in the email client. So, I have a portal the shows jobs which, when clicked, builds the message part up. I have a database with many different layouts. grouped into two folders. I would like a drop down menu pretty much identical to the in built Layout drop down menu found at the bottom left of the status toolbar. Reason being once I create a runtime solution, there won't be any status toolbar so this menu to hop between layouts needs to be in the GUI. Making 20 buttons with scripts to take the user to the specified layout is only going to clutter the screen. Thanks so much in advance.

I've always used checkbox controls for number-type fields used to represent logical true and false. In my latest project I thought I'd try something I've seen other developers do. I found two graphics files that look like checkboxes, one checked and the other un-checked, and stored them in global container fields. I've added a calculation field to my table indicating that if the value of the logical field = 1, return the checked graphic, otherwise return the un-checked graphic. I've placed the calculation field on my layout and made it into a button which activates a script that toggles the logical field. It worked perfectly and looks very polished and professional.…

So I have 2 tables. Inspection and Violation. They are joined in a many-to-many relationship. There are 2 records in Inspection. There are 6 records in Violation. I have a layout set up with parts (body, sub-summary) that show both inspection reports (records) and the list of violations on each inspection report. So there are 2 pages when this layout is in browse mode with the 2 inspection records- one inspection report on each page and a list of the violations within each inspection report. Hi everyone! I am a bit overwhelmed by FileMaker and its capabilities, so I would greatly appreciate some help. Currently, I have a database of contacts throughout the entire United States, with separate groups. (Group A, Group B, Group C, Group D, Group E). I would like to create some kind of "dashboard" or "layout" for FileMaker so that I can see how many members of each group we have in each City and in each State in the country, possibly like a pie chart that adapts to the data. I have a series of tabs, many of which contain LOTS of fields. I am trying to prevent users from having to scroll the whole window beyond the original window frame in order to see each tab's content and am trying to find a way to add scroll bars within a tab. I don't know what functionality would let me do that and the only other option I can come up with is to use another set of tabs within particularly dense main tabs. Any thoughts on how to address this issue most efficiently? We are worried that if there is ANOTHER set of tabs, users might forget to look at each one (which is important, as this for data entry on a research study). Any ideas?

I have a sub-summary part that provides summary data about my database according to record type. On the main database overview page, I created a portal with a self-join relationship (displays records from the same table as the layout it appears on) with relevant fields inside. Everything looks great, but the portal records are not also segregated by record type between the sub-summary reports. I have the records sorted by record type within the portal, but that just groups them. Right now, the portal looks identical in each sub-summary report. Is it possible to filter records so they only appear in the sub-summary part designated for their case type?

Thank you if you can help. Form view, data in fields. If data too much to fit in the field, the data that is displaying sits too high in the field compared to the other fields which don't autowrap to another line. This mismatch in placement of data in the field looks terrible particularly on list view. How can I stop FM from recognizing wrapped text when displaying and jagging it upwards? I tried setting alignment to upper, middle and lower but it makes no difference. There must be some trick to it or a checkbox or something. :cry:

Hi, I have defined a relationship in my filemaker project to a completely separate database, I have created a new layout and dropped in fields from the related database. I have applied formatting to these fields - font size, font family etc, however in browser mode I am still seeing the formatting from the related database, not as formatted in my database layout. I'm sure I've seen an option to change this and override the styling of the related database but I can't find it anywhere. Can anyone point me in the right direction? Cheers Kevin

I have an ODBC connection to a MSSQL database that has several timestamp fields. In FM, I'd like some of the fields to display just the dates and other fields to display just the times. When I use the Inspector/Data Formatting area to make any changes, the changes do not stick - the fields always show both the date and the time regardless of my changes. I'm not sure if I am doing something wrong in FM or running into a limitation based on my data source. Any thoughts or work-arounds? Picture example of ODBC data source fields attached.

This may sound simple, but I find it very annoying: I constantly end up with the text formatting toolbar showing up twice on my screen. I have a script to turn off all toolbars. That takes care of text toolbar number one. But the other one always remains on the screen and there is no way I can interact with it to have it go away. (The standard Filemaker menu shows it greyed out) It stays right on top of header section, preventing use of the navigation buttons I put there for the runtime application. I'm trying to create a layout, which is used solely for searches. Let's say it's a database of Cheese-producing Nations. (It isn't.) Each main record is of a Nation and its cheese production data. Each Nation has a sub-table of farms. Then the farms have one-to-many attributes of cheese types, Delivery options, and err.... some other thing. Each of these is in its own table with an ID and a Value List. Is there a way to skip summarizing data on a layout? I have a situation where I need to "Show all records" in a script. The summary fields then have to summarize which takes forever and the data I need to get to doesn't even involve those fields. Is there a way to tell filemaker not to summarize while leaving those fields on the layout?... or perhaps you may know a different work around. Thanks!
