FileMaker Pro v7 – v11

I created a database in Filemaker Pro 9 and worked with it for a few hours. I closed it and went to lunch. I came back, opened it, and it asked me for a password. I didn't set one up, nor did I set the document to ask for a password. Is there a preset that I can use to regain my work?

I have a project for a client to demonstrate an interface to his application database. I have been provided with a Filemaker 10 installer and key. The only Windows XP I have in my shop is a VMware XP Pro client hosted on a Windows 7 box. The installer exits with this message: ----------------- FileMaker Pro 10 Advanced Installer Information You cannot install or uninstall FileMaker on this system. Please refer to the system requirements in the installation instructions for more information. --------------------- Is there any chance this will work? ... seems to have gotten huge (I just upgraded from FM10). Is there a way to make it smaller again like it was in FM10. Is there a setting or a preference that I'm missing somewhere?

I have faithfully copied my smtp settings over from Mail, but despite an hour or so of tweaking, can't seem to get an email to go out. I keep getting error #1506. Is there a trick to this? I mean, those exact settings are working fine in Mail.

Hi there, Knowing the fact I registered online when installing FM Pro, what should be the proper steps if I plan to wipe out my hard disk? Should I deactivate FM Pro before re-installing Windows XP? This way I just have to re-activate FM Pro when I am done with Windows XP? I don't want to register twice with the same registration number. I am sure I am going to get all kind of problems. Any advice is welcome

I am almost at 30K records in only one file. That is about 10 years wking with the same database upgrading it up to this version. Problem: It seems that is getting slow specially if I need to duplicate a record or run a little complicated script. I never mess with memory settings cause it gave me problems in the past...(kinda when you burn y/self with milk you see a cow and begin to cry...)I recognize that is stupid of me, but really never had a need after all until now that I feel something needs to be done with speed. Any suggestions?

Be wary of update to FM Server Adv 11. Server side script schedules are getting user permission errors, regardless of user rights. As of Jul 12th FM support says they are working on it. There are messages in Tech Talk dating back to at least May 2nd on this. Andy

I have noticed that since upgrading to Windows 7 that I cannot display a quicktime video in a container field any longer. It does not give any errors, however there is no image in the quick time application as it attempts to play in the container field. Has anyone else noticed this and if so do we know if FM is aware that this is an issue? Thanks, Ron

Short question: Is there a good source for best practices to recover from corruption? If I suspect a bug in FMPRo is causing crashes, should I report it? Long question: I have a complicated database that is used for personal use. It is 4 files, I think about 30 tables total, one file has lots of images and is about 500MB, the rest are in the 2-40 MB range. There are lots of relations. Often when I have two related files open, making changes will cause FM Pro Advanced 8.5 to crash, often causing problems with the database. Hi, At my workstation at the office, I'm unable to update my FMA11 to 11.0.2. The update is asking for the file "Filemaker Advanced 11.msi" which is in the "FMICDFiles" folder. When I select this file, the installer tells something about a network resource that is unavailable. My XP is in French, but I configured FM to be in english, which should not make any difference. Am I the only one?

Using the Perform Quickfind Script step, does not seem to produce a Get(LastError). It just returns 0. Doing a quickfind that finds nothing, also does not return a FoundCount of 0. What I want to do is a simple QuickFind in a script, and if the result return no records allow you to rerun the script via customized dialog box. I have FM9 installed on a machine. I now installed FM11 so that I can play with it. I still need FM9 in order to use my current applications. Once I installed FM11, I can no longer access FM9. ANy ideas?

Without changing anything, it seems that I can open an FM9 file in FM11 with the only difference being the bar on type rather than on the side. Does that mean that switching to 11 is painless, or should I look out for something. Also, I would want to switch to FM11 server as well. Is that seamless as well?

It appears that the FM10 Family is compatible with 64-bit Windows. But genx said recently http://fmforums.com/forum/showpost.php?pid/312472/ that FM is a 32 bit application and will run as a 32 bit application regardless of the OS. He said this in mid December, so I don’t know if he was referring to FM10 as well. So, does anyone know if FM10 (in particular Server) is still a 32 bit application ? And if this is the case, is it true to say that FM cannot make use of more than 4GB RAM - ie that it’s pointless to install > 4GB of you have FMS10 running on a 64 bit machine ?

I've been searching the forums for a while now but I haven't seen any posts regarding a similar situation. (Forgive me if I overlooked something...) I've begun using FMPA11 in place of FMPA10 for my FMP10 solutions and I'm getting an error upon opening the files. It says that my FMP10 solution requires FMP10 and won't operate without it. Which is strange because I thought everything was "upwards" compatible. I haven't found any problems in my scripts and it seems to operate okay thus far. On more than one computer running OS 10.5.8 I'm seeing more crashes with FMPA 11 than with 9 and 10 combined. The triggering event seems to be going too quickly to a menu after closing the Manage Database dialog box. It happens both with local files and with ones hosted on FM Server. Anyone else running into this?

Is it true that the new features of FMP11 will work just fine on FMS10?

I have FMP 8 20+ seats with Server 8 on Win 2003. I have some large and growing fast (35+ GB) files with scanned docs being served. This will grow to 100+GB files within the life of the system. I had one file corrupted once (remote disconnected without logout) and it took me forever to fix as I had to copy the file to computer with the OS on a large partition (darn Dell puts the server OS on a small partition, cannot create the scratch file and could not find a way to direct FMP to create the scratch file elsewhere). I was freaking out. Am I pushing the limits of Filemaker? Or am I worrying too much? Stublito

Well, quite frankly no surprise, but FM11 still has not corrected the issues with Thai Unicode entry. We will make a decision later this year as to our new DB core, as I'm no longer convinced FM is a solution for our clients, but I get ahead of myself. Inspector, well should have been in FM7 or FM8, a basic intuitive feature, that is still lacking, (buttons and triggers not supported), so right clicking on fields will continue but at a somewhat lower rate. I'm upgrading a couple maintenance clients to 11. 1) I've got download links for both, but I want to just download FMP 11 once and add it to all clients on a flash drive. Can I simply use the same software? Is the license key tied to the download somehow? 2) I'm upgrading one client from 8.5/9 to 11 and another from 8 (Donations) to 11. Something weird has changed with FM11 from 10. A report that I have uses a sub-summary that has the option of 'allow part to break across page boundaries'. This looked just fine with v10. But now I notice that the sub-summary is displaying and printing into the part before it, so the text is overlapped. Very odd. If I take off the option to break across page boundaries, then it looks fine and the part appears on the next page (as appropriate). Anyone else experiencing this? I wanted to make sure it wasn't just me before I submit this to FileMaker.

Without UT training, I designed and maintain a FileMakerPro v 7 database utilized by my office. One of several layouts (titled: Students) has a tab system (Contact Info, Contact Summary, Fall 2009, Jan 2010 and Spring 2010). After making an adjustment to a few fields within the Contact Summary tab I then clicked the "Save" option. Since then, the fields for ALL of the tabs have been appearing in ALL of the tabs (See images provided). Thus, the fields for the entire layout are appearing for every tab. We jumped and purchased FMA 11 and then found that runtimes will not work. All computers (no Mac's) give the following error:"The application has failed to start because the application configuration is incorrect. Reinstalling the application may fix this problem." Hey all. Just got my hands, finally, on FMPA11. First time I tried to connect to a remotely-hosted file, I got the dreaded "The file <> could not be opened. Either the host is not available, or the file is not available on that host." Just to double-check, I tried again using FMPA10. Worked fine. Also under FMPA9. Hi all - I got bit by the change in Target Window Handling between FM 9 and FM 10. Nothing serious and it was easy to remedy. Anyone know of any behavior changes introduced in FM11? I get the impression the answer is no, but if anyone knows of any changes, I'd love to know.

I remember with FMP 9 that when I needed to use my FMP Advanced in a third machine, I had to deactivate it in one of my other two machines. I assumed the same applied to FMP10. Is this still necessary with FMP 11 though? I need to install FMPA in my clients server to work via remote desktop, but I have it already installed in my Mac & Win machines and don't know how to deactivate neither of my two activated copies ... any help? thanks in advance!

I love the idea of these snapshot links. I'm asked for ad-hoc reports all the time and it will be great to e-mail a snapshot link to the person requesting the data and have them see the layout and found set instead of exporting everything to excel. One thing it seems to be missing is storing the sort options in the snapshot link. I tried my first chart today (which is pretty handy) and I thought I'd generate a snapshot from it. The only option I noticed was current record/records in found set. Seems like a silly oversight.

We setup FMServer Advanced 11 on a VMWare virtual server environment. There are on average 40 users logged into the system. We've noticed that for some reason assigning the server two CPUs is much slower overall (navigation/find requests/etc) for the users than just assigning one CPU. There is 8 gigs of memory assigned. Which would be just fine, but we're noticing that the Admin Console is abruptly stopping and the files are no longer being hosted. It's a problem with the module ntdll.dll, which is documented in other posts. Like FileMaker itself, and many other features within FileMaker, (think repeating fields for example) the feature may be quite valuable but should be used with an understanding of its limitations. If you were to use FMP11 clients with an FMP10 server, what FMP11 client features would not work? For example, the quickfind option looks a really good feature, but I'm not sure where to check if it will work if the database is hosted on an FMP10 server.

Just something to keep in mind. FileMaker Server Advanced 11 uses it's own ODBC Driver and no longer uses the DataDirect. This is great by the way since I've seen the Datadirect files get dinged up on occassion. I assume this will add stability. If you are using the ODBC on a 64-bit System there is something to keep in mind. Filemaker doesnt support Windows 2008 Server 64-Bit ODBC Data Source Adminsitrator. hi all, i wanted to upgrade my 8.5 advanced to 10 adv on my laptop also because i'll be on teh road for a week. this has worked fine on my desktop intel, but my powerbook g4 just spits out the disc without any message. any idea why it does that. no, it's not the drive and the disc is also ok (popped it in my desktop ok). thanks for any ideas.

I haven't gotten my hands on FMP 11 yet, so it may be that this idea won't work. But it occurs to me that by saving a snapshot link, then embedding the snapshot into a container field using Insert File, we have a simple way of creating "saved found sets" without complicating our schema. Has anyone tried this yet? The idea has a "strange loopy" quality that I find very appealing.

New FMP11 Portal filtering feature does not seem to work when filtering based on a global. Here are some calculations I tried entering in the "Each portal record will be visible when:" dialog... IsEmpty (Table::globalfield) or ( PortalTable::field = Table::globalfield ) ...all records show up regardless of what is in Table::globalfield IsEmpty (Table::globalfield) ...no records show up, even if the global field is not empty PortalTable::field = Table::globalfield ...no records show up, even if fields match BUT - change globalfield to a regular field, and everything works as expected (related records only show up in the case of a field match …

Hi, I don't know how I manage to do this, but I was able to open two instances of FMPA11 under the same session. I tried to replicate this but I was not able. As I posted a few months back an I was able to identify that an error occurs under the folowing conditions invloving FMS 10 on a Windows 2008 Server. If you set up FMS to customize the "Server Name" in the General Settings on the Filemaker Server console (not taking the default name of the server), the client will crash when attempting to insert an object into a container field. This was a registered issue at FMI. Now I see that the same issue exists in FMS 11. What gives? Either eliminate the ablity to edit the server name or fix it... It's not that it's a game breaker, but just incase anyone is deploying FMS 10 or 11 on a 2008 server, leave the server name as is. …

Well they support Windows XP which is really old, but they do not support MacOS 10.4. Could be a bummer for a lot of folks. I was looking forward to upgrading until I saw the system requirements for Mac. :)

I have just read that FM11 on the Mac is built with Cocoa. Is this true? If it is there could be benefits in graphics performance and elsewhere. I will be interested to hear about any testing of this.

I was working in my FMP7 file when I had a power outage. When I tried to open the file, I was unable to open it and was prompted to use the Recover command. The Recovered file retained most of the data, however, the "Find" function has been disabled. Could someone help me with this?

I'm experiencing an issue playing quicktime video in FileMaker 10 on a Windows 7 Ultimate platform. The video plays and the progress bar moves, but dosen't display a video (the video are is white). The video I tried dosn't have sound so Im not sure if the sound is affected. Has anyone else experienced any problems like this? For smart people out there: Is there any reason why it used to be so easy to relate tables and not being at risk of going crazy if by mistake you touch the wrong path? All of my fields went "". Thank God for back ups' cause I spent hours trying to figure out how or what I did to years of work!. I suspect filemaker pro drew a line from FM7 on. I love FM, but it looks like certain things don't make sense to me, i.e you grab 3 related files working smoothly, just terrific relationships (HEY, all done by me!), then you are so happy that decision is made to use the same files with a different name and in another folder.... what a nightmare!.. tough I managed to make them …

I haven's seen any recent posts about 64 bit and FileMaker 10. I had already ordered a Win 7,64bit machine but it has been delayed until Jan 2010. But sounds like I'm wasting my money if FileMaker 10 still only supports 32Bit. Does anyone have any information about this? Thanks .....

I have a user that has a new laptop that has the number pad on the right. When he chooses numlock it causes the field to tab on enter. If he turns off numlock (which renders the number pad useless) the enter functions again. How do you allow this to function without numlock on/off all the time? Thanks Thom

At the kind request of Ocean, I will keep my tone down, but frankly I'm outraged by what I discovered (and it really deserved all the vernacular in the world) : The Show/Hide status script steps actually changes the window whole dimensions of the window. So If you create a new window with a 400 pixel height and that you're currently with the status bar enabled, and then decide to Hide the status bar the new window will shrink to 400-106 pixels ! I'm thinking about buying an Acer netbook with the 1.6G Atom chipset, 1G Ram, 120G HDD, Win XP. Will FMP 8.0 work OK?

Hi there I have been using FMP7 on an iMac no probs. I have now needed to move FMP7 onto a PC. All is well - except I have a folder called "Scanned Documents" over 5,000 images - mostly TIFF and some JPEGs. Each of these images is represented by a Container Field in FMP7. I want to default FMP7 to open the Container Field that I click (Scanned Documents) can anyone please advise me on what I need to do? When using the iMac I would simply click on one of the Container Fields - this would then open the image - retreived from the Scanned Documents folder - I need to do the same on the PC.

Im making a contract database, and have basically finished it up, but today the print button is greyed out. I dont know why. Im working on the file, not the stand-alone program. I've never changed permissions, so it shouldnt be that. - I've tried to print every layout, and the print button is greyed on on every page. - I can print from other programs, and i can copy + paste the layouts into other programs and print. - I'm runnign Snow leopard 10.6.1, but had no problems a few days ago. Hi guys, Tried to have a look about the site to see if I could find anything, but I cant. Right, here's the story. We have 3 FM10 licences. One of the PC's (PC A from now on) has crashed and wont reboot from its hard drive. I can, thankfully, use the hard drive from it as a slave on another PC (PC . Now, is there anyway of getting the licence from PC A's hard drive? PC B already has filemaker installed on it, so i assume that that version of FM will open up? I'm not really into computers, but can do more than the basics if explained to me. I should also explain, that at present, we can't get access to the store room where the licence keys are stored. …

Anyone else with FM10 feeling left behind?

I am running OSX 10.6. I was looking at a v5 .fp7 file and when I clicked the 'quit' button I got a system message that said I had to hold the power button to shut my Mac down and then press it again to start. I did this. Upon start up, when I click my FM icon, the splash screen comes up and it says ...loading in the lower left corner then it closes. I can not start FM??? I have restored from my backup. No help. I have reinstalled FM ... no help. I have deleted the current version and it's plist file and reinstalled from the CD... no help. What's going on?: This is truely weird... What do you think about the new status bar/area in FM10. Honestly it would be fine if we, as developers, were able to totally customize and/or lock out user customization. Until we can do it, it's completely useless in my solutions. Boo FileMaker.

Just upgraded to FM 10 advanced and overall I like the changes; except for the status bar not being customizable. It just sits their taking up a lot of real estate if you can't add or reduce its size. Sure you can turn it off, but then your navigation is limited to the menus and few other tool bars you can add. I think Filemaker choose form over function on this idea!

Hi there, I have a script that exports a container field's contents to Mac share. It receives the filename/path by way of a variable. This script was working perfectly last year on a G5 (non-Intel) iMac running Tiger and FileMaker 8 Advanced. This year, the Mac was upgraded to an Intel iMac running Leopard. As far as I can tell, nothing else has changed.. but now, the Export Field Contents step of the script is failing most of the time. Hi all, Filemaker 9 flickers a lot while minimizing windows and it takes a while to select tables. On a brand new database with a single table ... when I open the Manager (the table chart-view) and click on a table, I can literally watch it GROW the orange glowing highlight rectangle. It draws it in slow motion starting from the inside perimeter and then adding progressively more transparent rectangles to form a gradient. Has anyone else experienced something like this ? Does anyone know of an easy way to send text messages through Skype without using an external plugin? If it is at all possible? Like for example an Open URL request to "skype:+[insert cell phone number]?sms would open the text message interface in skype, with the correct number, but would not actually send anything. I'm fishing for something like Open URL "skype:+[insert cell phone number]?sms & text="this is a text message" that would actually call the skype interface and send the text message. Do I make sense? FM 10 the status bar is now on top. This will require me to redesign over 100 layouts on 14 different databases due to the real estate change of the status bar. What were the FM guys thinking??? Is there a way to move the status bar back on the left side of the page in FM 10?

I'd like to have a variable that is specific to a window. A global variable or a global window is not exactly I want, as I may have more than one window (of the same type) open at the same time, each one showing a different set of records (pertaining to THAT window variable). I was disappointed to see Filemaker 10 for XP still flickering badly. Does anyone who how to fix this. If's it's a new video card which one should I get?

I purchased FileMakers prebuilt FM Work Requests Application on Filemakers Presales statements (and FM website info) that the FM Work Requests Application could be served via IWP via FM 7 Server Advanced. The FM Work Requests Application Users Guide says the app can be served via FMNet and/or IWP via FM 7 Server Advanced. Yet much to my surprise, the FM Work Requests Application can NOT be served via FM 7 Server Advanced via either FMNet and/or IWP. The app shows "missing field" and the Icons/buttons do not display correctly. I contacted FM Tech Support and they indeed verify that the FM Work Requests Application can NOT "out of the box" be served via FM 7 …

Since upgrading to V10 I have noticed a few odd occurrences when using "insert calculated resulted" script step. It seems to place the data in the wrong field. It had all been working fine in 9 but since the upgrade it has been problematic. It doesn't happen all the time, it seems to vary from script to script and some can be solved by running the step while in a different layout and switching back. All very odd. Any ideas? I've read the announcement page on FileMaker's site pretty carefully, and I can find no reference to being able to enter data in SQL fields. Phrases such as "...add SQL data to FileMaker Pro solutions...", "...include information located in SQL systems", and "You can create new information by adding supplemental calculation and summary fields to the SQL table," imply you cannot add data to fields directly. Is this just a case of a poorly-written announcement?

Export Field Contents on a field with a file reference (to a .pdf file set to open in Preview on one machine anyway) causes FM to unexpectedly quit, before getting to the export file window. 1st time with FM and Forums. Very novice. When I edit my tabs layout both Member and Member Info tabs are correct. When I save and exit I see the same info on both tabs one on top of the other. Any idea what I am doing wrong? File at Link

One thing that I've noticed with FM Pro 10 (and advanced), is that when the program is running and has around 50 hosted files open, the idle CPU usage is about 25%. To clarify - the files are being hosted by FMServer 10 on a separate machine. When running FM 9 with the same scenario, the CPU usage is around 8%. This isn't really a problem with desktop computers, but we're also running a Citrix server for outside sales people. After three people log in and run FM10, the CPU usage is maxed out. Which is unacceptable, considering that on a normal day anywhere from 5-10 users will be on at a time. The same scenario is present whether it's being run on XP…

So i had an old ATI 64mb dual vga video card at work on my Dell Dimension 3000. I just installed a new GeForce 9400 GT with dual VGA outputs. In addition to this, i have a 3rd (primary monitor) connected to the onboard vga. Anyway, so i updated all drivers, for computer and whatnot. And everything works fine and dandy. Except for my FMP 8 advanced! The program loads fine, however no matter what database i open, they all appear distorted (see attached file for snapshot) FMP works fine on my onboard vga output, but either of my 2 other montiors connected to the new card display that! What gives??

Hi, I have a question about FileMaker 10 multi user bundles campaigns. The purchased licence will be like volume licence for this bundles. If yes, I want to understand what is volume licence clearly. Is it possible to use 5 user pack with a server (running fm sever 10) and 5 additional machines (each of them runs fmp 10). HI My clients are reporting this "bug" more and more and I cannot seem to figure out if it is my solution or a bug in filemaker. What seems to be happening is the default keyboard changes to USA if UK was default.This only seems to be the case in filemaker eg In flemaker ( UK keybaord is default ) you select Shift 2 and expect to get a " but instead you get a @ but then you go to word and select shift 2 and you get a " Why if you have UK as default keyboard do you get an @ symbl when yo select shift 2. I cannot test this bug as it seems to happen randomly. Could the system formats affect this. It looks like the system formats only look at date time and number …

I want to uninstall FM9 (recently installed FM10). I understand that I now have to deactivate the copy of FM9 before I can uninstall. According to the Help file that would normally be done under the Help menu but since this is a volume licensed copy, according to FM Knowledge Base, the Deactivation option is not available. FM Knowledge Base (Answer ID 6470) offered a couple of resolutions. 1. use a file with the options available, 2. close and then re launch Filemaker. The first is not an option and the second didn’t work (didn’t really make any sense to me). Any suggestions on how to deactivate a volume license copy of FM9? Thanks Nor

This was a doozy. I am converting our files from FM 5.5 to 8.5 using FileMaker Advanced 8.5v1 (currently downloading the updater). I am using an iMac running 10.5.2 with a 2GHz Intel Core 2 Duo. I had just finished tweeking the last script in one particular file (I'll call it Fred.fp7). Win XP FMP Advanced 10.0v2 I use images/icons throughout my solution (e.g., trash can icons, sort ascending/descending icons, arrows, etc) that I copied from the FM Graphics Pack and elsewhere. In FMP 9.0v3 (Win and Mac) they display perfectly. In FMP 10.0v2 (Mac) they are perfect, but in Win XP they display with white backgrounds (see attachment). FileMaker 10 crashes randomly and frequently on several of the PCs we have here. There is no pattern to when it crashes, no consistency at all. Sometimes it comes up with the standard Windows "This application has crashed" window, and sometimes FileMaker just quits. It's been happening when the computers are clients of Server 9 on a LAN, but it also happens when local files are open. It's driving us nuts as there's no pattern as to when it crashes, so it's hard to know where to start solving the problem. Anyone else have similar problems? or more importantly any solutions?

Win XP FMP9 Adv I just purchased FMP10 Adv but I want to continue to develop in FMP9 Adv for the next 6 months. Can I install 10 on my computer to explore and learn the new features, and still continue to develop in 9 without any problems? When I did this during the last upgrade (8.5 to 9), it seemed that all of my 8.5 files defaulted to 9 and I had no control. My users will not convert to 10 until the fall and I'm going to have to redesign/reconfigure all database layouts (which make use of the left side status area) with the new status area at the top. Good Morning all, I have a question regarding the documented system requirements for FM10adv on XP pro clients. We are in the planning stages of deploying 10 company wide, however we have not done a mass update to SP3. We are currently running a fully patched SP2. The documentation states SP3 as a minimum requirement. Are there any known issues running on SP2?
