I was getting some very strange behavior from FileMaker 12, and didn't notice that several of the plug-ins I had for FileMaker Pro 11 started up with the installations of FileMaker Pro 12. Uninstalling the plug-ins seems to have cured the problem. Lee

I set up a shortcut each of my FM clients desktops to open a file hosted by FMS11. I've just upgraded to FM12 and was wondering if anyone knew the shortcut extension required to make it work. this was the old one fmp7://192.168.0.2/mydatabase.fp7 I've tried changing the '7' to '12' but this doen't work. any ideas welcome

OK, just to clear up some evident confusion. Version 12 products have a new file format. This is the case for FileMaker Pro, FileMaker Server, and FileMaker GO. The new versions do not host or open files from older versions (.fp7 files). The old versions do not host or open the new files (.fmp12 files). There is no compatibility across the two file formats: .fp7 and .fmp12. Older version formats must be converted using FIleMaker Pro. Steven

Hi everyone and excuse me please if I seem ignorant of the inner workings of Filemaker. I stuck together my database a couple of years ago when my brain was younger, fresher and it took me the best part of 2 months !! We use it for writing invoices and creating quotations for my wife's business. It has worked absolutely brilliantly and I think FM is a wonderful bit of software. I have used the Developer Utilities in FM11 Pro Adv before, but now every time I try to create a runtime solution, the Create button is grayed out. Yes, I have selected the correct options, etc. I tried on files that worked just last week, but no go today. So I created a junk .fp7 file with only one table and one field. Still, the Create button is grayed out when trying to process this minimal file. Anyone have an idea of why the Create button is grayed out?

I need to be able to find the version of Internet Explorer that is installed from a FileMaker script, so that I can prompt my users to install the latest version of IE. I have done a lot of research and have found a way to do it on WinXP and Server 2003, but that method does not work on Vista, 7, and Server 2008. Any help would be appreciated.

Dear Friend, Here I am facing a very small problem. I have two files A and B. Both are independent files and having no relation with each other. But I just want that, whenever a user try to open file B without opening file A, then he should be given a message that first open file A than only after that user will be able to open file B. I mean no user can open file B without opening file A. And one more question that, How can I get the name another file from a file without having any relationship between them.? Thanks in advance. Hi, I am having a problem with FileMaker Pro 9 in MacBook Pro (Lion). I got an error message "FileMaker cannot share files because another user is already sharing files" when I started my databases. I have tried all the solutions I could find on the internet, but the problem still not resolved. Any help from you will be very much appreciated. Below are what I have tried. 1. Hello All, I have an old program that has FM3 runtimes that works fine on Windows XP. I tried to see if it would run on Windows 7 yet everytime i try to do that, nothing happens. I tried to have to program run in compatibility mode (Windows XP - SP3, WIndows XP - SP2) to no avail. Is there any limitation that anyone knows of with FM3 and WIndows 7 or is it something beyond filemaker? Please advise Thanks

Hello, I am a newbie here so will preface this post by saying that. I have a bunch of fm3 runtimes. I have imported them to FileMaker 9 Pro and it says it needs to convert them. That is fine. These runtimes have passwords on them. Once converted to an fm7 file and trying to open them up in FM 9, most options appear greyed out. By that I mean the Manage and Export features are greyed out under the File menu. All the view modes are greyed out as well. Its as if its password protected yet I cannot enter the password. Can someone help me figure out why this is? What have I done wrong? Thanks

My mouse wheel scrolling does not work correctly. I can scroll, but only when I spin it very fast, not slowly one record at a time. I'm trying to scroll through the records while I'm in "view as form" in "browse mode." Has anyone had this issue and found a fix? Is it a FileMaker setting or a mouse setting? I just upgraded my computer from Win XP to Win 7. I had FileMaker Pro 11.0 v3 on my old machine and again on my new machine. I'm using the same mouse that worked on my old machine but now does not work on my new machine. Other folks in my office have Win 7, but they are not having this issue. Any help would be appreciated.

Hi All, FMP 8 on a G4 mac running OS 10.3.9 (soon to be 10.4.11, but here we are). FMP Server 8.5 on... something else, but also mac OS. also old. I don't think it's a server issue. Running FMP8 on client works fine. However, when using "connect to remote" to connect to the server, I get a license conflict. Here is all i want to do, i want to rename the usernames i have in pro 7 to a different name structure (currently it's lastname first initial and i want to change it to first initial lastname). I have an early version of FM pro but with the new system for Mac (Lion) I find I have to replace it as it wont work on the new system. I have downloaded a test copy from the internet which works OK on the old system and was offered a new copy for $299 US. I contacted a local dealer and was advised that an Australian copy would cost me $499. The price difference seems unreal and I would like to know can I use the US system in Australia and what is the difference between the two versions. I assume that version 11 works OK with Lion is this correct? Ianbag

Has anybody experienced a failure within a new calculation of the "Evaluate this calculation from the context of.... " list to update with all appropriate relationships in the relationship graph. My file which started life in FM5 lost its reference to the main table recently, necessitating all new calculations to be copied from a previous calculation, which still had the full list, and then amended. I have partially overcome this problem by deleting the two relationships that remained in the list. This is the behavior I've seen reported to expect when updating files created in pre-10 versions that have Custom Menus which are missing new features, like Saved Finds. "1.2. To add new custom menu items such as Saved Finds to menu sets created in versions prior to FileMaker Pro 10 Advanced, create a new custom menu and add the new menu item from the list ofstandard FileMaker menus in the Create Custom Menu dialog box." Hi, I am having some trouble with a Mac .fp3 solution, which requires upgrade/conversion for a client to Windows and I am hoping the forum can help. Their solution is completely stable on all Mac OS versions which support OS9 - OS10.4, but as soon as I upgrade the .fp3 files to .fp5 using FMP5.5 it becomes unstable in all versions of Windows from 2000 to 7, even in compatibility mode where supported (not surprising really, but I have tested this!). Hi Anyone got the bug fix file FMP 5.3 updater on their hard disk? The ftp link on the Filemaker website is dead. I had a copy of the file on a hard disk but have lost it. When I open a series of files I find that the majority are neither listed in the Window - Open Files listing nor the Window / Show Window (hidden files) listing. The only practical way to navigate between files is to minimise the one in view, select the other file I need and maximise it. Surely there must be an easier way than that? I wonder whether this is an error on my system or a shortcoming of Filemaker 9 Advanced?

Hello, I am a FM novice. I work with Filemaker Pro 10 and here is my problem: I have a field where one can choose the value from the value list. Values are "YES" and "NO". My goal is to create the script which will navigate the person to the other specific field if he/she chooses "YES". As far as I understand this, I need to tell the FM that my "YES" in value list is certain number and then tell FM in script that if the Field matches this number then go to the field... But how to tell the FM the first text value in the valuelist is some value (number etc.)... Of course, any other suggestion/solution is welcomed. Thanks!

I have (maybe foolishly) just deleted a copy of 8.0v2 as it seemed to be opening my 8.5 files. However, I now get the above alert on opening my 8.5 files and am wondering if I can re-install the dictionary (not sure if it exists even) from maybe my install disc - is there a custom install for this or should I be more concerned...i.e. have I got a major problem here. I have a legacy (Read: Extremely old) FMPro 5 database that I was just tasked to support/fix due to a recent misconfiguration made a couple weeks ago. I am now about 2 days in to my FMPro5 experience. They have no manuals/documentation and finding support for FMP5 online is hard, at best. So the issue, and I am hoping it is an easy answer (Good or bad for me), is this: When adding someone to a script definition in Script Maker and exiting, the "Keep or Replace" dialog box came up and REPLACE was selected instead of KEEP on 'FIND REQUESTS' Radio button. Warning. If you are developing a solution to be used by both FM10 and FM11 users, you will now have to take care to watch the GET functions. The following get functions are have changed their names! Open a file in FMP11, create a new script that uses these one of the new functions, then open it in FMP10. The 'new' functions are not recognized. (not forward compatible) Even worse, open FMP11 now modify your new script to use either the old name or the new name. You can't use the old name in FMP11 since it is not a recognized function. I wanted to ask if anyone has a solution to start the Windows 2000 Service Components for FileMaker Pro 3.0 and Filemaker 3.0 Server. I downed the Filemaker FMServer to update a file and cannot get the FMServer to restart. When I checked the Windows 2000 Service Components, the Filemaker Service Component was not running in Windows 2000. When I tried to start it, I was given an "Error 5: Access Denied" message. I think FM 11 portal filtering will have a lot of great uses. It also presents some problems that will need to be solved. For instance, you can set up a filter that might show invoices by date or customer or something. Handy. But - how do you get the total for this filtered subset? The existing sum() function won't work, because it only operates on the basic relationship and is not affected by the filter. Of course, you could create a let function in the filter calc that creates a global variable. Hm.

I recently joined an organization that has Filemaker Pro 5. They needed a re-instalation of one of their 'licences' on a replacement computer and now, noone can use file maker in 'multi user mode'. I have absolutely zero knowledge of file maker other than the facat that it is a database application and the version in this office is waaay out of date. They have no money to upgrade so I have to deal with this. How do I fix this so that hey can open the same database concurently? What could I have done to stop this from working? All I did was install FileMaker on a new computer. Thanks.

I run a solution on FM 9 Adv. for one project that is data entry and printing of form letters and envelopes.There are some simple printing scripts as part of it. A second person helps out and enters data through IWP sometimes. Now that business has increased and we need her to print too. The data is kept locally on my MacBook Pro and it can remain there. The second person is normally only there when I am and there is no particular need to store the data on a server. Given that, what version of FM do I need so she can enter data and print just as I do running the original data and solution located on my computer? Do I need server or can I just get for her FM9?

I'm trying to create a button that lists all client records where their birthday is due within x days. I.E. Hello, I wanted to know what is the simplest way (if a way even exists) to send a filemaker page to someone through email and have them fill out missing forms remotely. After a cursory search, I see that there are several email pluggins for Filemaker, but I have little knowledge of the program, let alone with it's pluggins, and I don't know which ones (if any) could help me accomplish this. Is there a way to determine what plugins an .fp5 file is using? I opened the file in FMP6 Developer and went to FileMaker Developer/Preferences/Application.../Plug-Ins I can see a list of the plugins but these are application-wide. I created a full name field by calculating First & " " & Last. All are text. It works on the layouts. It works when printing to PDf and preview. I actually see the full name. I then export the fields to a basic file. This gives me plain text, with each field surrounded by quotes. The fields all are what they should be, except for the full name field. It is "0" in every single instance. Why does it not produce text instead of 0? Is there any other way to output the fields as plain text. I don't really need the quotes, but I do need text in a file (not pdf)

Hello, I am new to this forum and File Maker too. I am creating a database of my family tree. I don't have the expertise to do a proper family tree so I am doing a simple tree. However I need a little help. Here are the details I have created a database where every record is an address book card of an individual. So far we have traced out 350 people in the family tree. So in the database we have 350 individual address cards. I am new to my non-profit organization and upgrading from FMP 4 to FMP 11. The trial went fine, not a single problem. However, after installation and full conversion, no one can use their passwords to get in to the database. None of our passwords will work and we've tried every combination we can think of. I would like to go into the FMP4 file (we have not yet upgraded all the computers so we can still get into a copy of the file using the old software)and remove all passwords in the Access Privilieges. How do I do this? In the alternative, is there anything else I can try? Thank you!!!

I have a client who reported an error message saying 'Unknown error 18'. When he tried to find another record the list kept coming up with the same 3 records he had before he went into the find. The error message actually appeared twice every time he tried to do anything. It works on other machines. He re-started and the error kept coming up, but when he re-started a second time the error had vanished. Does anyone know what this error is and/or has anyone encountered it before?

Hi I Installed FM pro 11 advanced (upgrade) with dutch and english language. But default it starts in dutch. Which I don't want because most manuals are in english. Thats why I want the english version. What way can I accomplish this? It is not in the preferences. I'm on a mac. Thx Sabrina

We bought a POS app written on FMPro 6. The app is no longer supported by the developer. The app comes in one small *.fp5 and loads of *.cji files. I have two passwords for the app, normal user's and master password. But neither allows me to delete a record. I've used password crackers to retrieve 4 additional passwords, but still cannot manually delete a record. It seems to be needing developer's password. Is there a bypass to have direct access to the records for deletion?

I have a project for a client to demonstrate an interface to his application database. I have been provided with a Filemaker 10 installer and key. The only Windows XP I have in my shop is a VMware XP Pro client hosted on a Windows 7 box. I have faithfully copied my smtp settings over from Mail, but despite an hour or so of tweaking, can't seem to get an email to go out. I keep getting error #1506. Is there a trick to this? I mean, those exact settings are working fine in Mail.

Hi there, Knowing the fact I registered online when installing FM Pro, what should be the proper steps if I plan to wipe out my hard disk? Should I deactivate FM Pro before re-installing Windows XP? This way I just have to re-activate FM Pro when I am done with Windows XP? I don't want to register twice with the same registration number. I am sure I am going to get all kind of problems. Any advice is welcome

I am almost at 30K records in only one file. That is about 10 years wking with the same database upgrading it up to this version. Problem: It seems that is getting slow specially if I need to duplicate a record or run a little complicated script. I never mess with memory settings cause it gave me problems in the past...(kinda when you burn y/self with milk you see a cow and begin to cry...)I recognize that is stupid of me, but really never had a need after all until now that I feel something needs to be done with speed. Any suggestions?

Be wary of update to FM Server Adv 11. Server side script schedules are getting user permission errors, regardless of user rights. As of Jul 12th FM support says they are working on it. There are messages in Tech Talk dating back to at least May 2nd on this. Andy

I have noticed that since upgrading to Windows 7 that I cannot display a quicktime video in a container field any longer. It does not give any errors, however there is no image in the quick time application as it attempts to play in the container field. Has anyone else noticed this and if so do we know if FM is aware that this is an issue? Thanks, Ron

I have a client with FMP 5 running dinosaur solution at the back of the custodians closet. They are reluctant to upgrade it for several reasons and have been running the upgrade proposal through committees for a year now. The problem is that now they want to give access to the solution via a web browser. In I.E, the db shows up fine but anything more complicated than a "go to layout" command attached to a button is ignored. In Firefox, none of the buttons work. Is there an any browser that will work with the old CDML code any more?

Short question: Is there a good source for best practices to recover from corruption? If I suspect a bug in FMPRo is causing crashes, should I report it? Long question: I have a complicated database that is used for personal use. It is 4 files, I think about 30 tables total, one file has lots of images and is about 500MB, the rest are in the 2-40 MB range. There are lots of relations. Often when I have two related files open, making changes will cause FM Pro Advanced 8.5 to crash, often causing problems with the database. Hi, At my workstation at the office, I'm unable to update my FMA11 to 11.0.2. The update is asking for the file "Filemaker Advanced 11.msi" which is in the "FMICDFiles" folder. When I select this file, the installer tells something about a network resource that is unavailable. My XP is in French, but I configured FM to be in english, which should not make any difference. Am I the only one?

Using the Perform Quickfind Script step, does not seem to produce a Get(LastError). It just returns 0. Doing a quickfind that finds nothing, also does not return a FoundCount of 0. What I want to do is a simple QuickFind in a script, and if the result return no records allow you to rerun the script via customized dialog box. I am doing this all with the toolbar off, thus it is all done with script steps. Thanks David

I have FM9 installed on a machine. I now installed FM11 so that I can play with it. I still need FM9 in order to use my current applications. Once I installed FM11, I can no longer access FM9. ANy ideas?

Without changing anything, it seems that I can open an FM9 file in FM11 with the only difference being the bar on type rather than on the side. Does that mean that switching to 11 is painless, or should I look out for something. Also, I would want to switch to FM11 server as well. Is that seamless as well?

It appears that the FM10 Family is compatible with 64-bit Windows. But genx said recently http://fmforums.com/forum/showpost.php?pid/312472/ that FM is a 32 bit application and will run as a 32 bit application regardless of the OS. He said this in mid December, so I don’t know if he was referring to FM10 as well. So, does anyone know if FM10 (in particular Server) is still a 32 bit application ? And if this is the case, is it true to say that FM cannot make use of more than 4GB RAM - ie that it’s pointless to install > 4GB of you have FMS10 running on a 64 bit machine ?

I've been searching the forums for a while now but I haven't seen any posts regarding a similar situation. (Forgive me if I overlooked something...) I've begun using FMPA11 in place of FMPA10 for my FMP10 solutions and I'm getting an error upon opening the files. It says that my FMP10 solution requires FMP10 and won't operate without it. Which is strange because I thought everything was "upwards" compatible. I haven't found any problems in my scripts and it seems to operate okay thus far. On more than one computer running OS 10.5.8 I'm seeing more crashes with FMPA 11 than with 9 and 10 combined. The triggering event seems to be going too quickly to a menu after closing the Manage Database dialog box. It happens both with local files and with ones hosted on FM Server. Anyone else running into this?

I have FMP 8 20+ seats with Server 8 on Win 2003. I have some large and growing fast (35+ GB) files with scanned docs being served. This will grow to 100+GB files within the life of the system. I had one file corrupted once (remote disconnected without logout) and it took me forever to fix as I had to copy the file to computer with the OS on a large partition (darn Dell puts the server OS on a small partition, cannot create the scratch file and could not find a way to direct FMP to create the scratch file elsewhere). I was freaking out. Am I pushing the limits of Filemaker? Or am I worrying too much? Stublito

I'm trying to gather a little information surrounding when FileMaker dropped support for .fp5 files. If memory serves, it's been about 3 years but I thought I'd check if anyone knows more accurately. Also, is there a chart anywhere (or any information for that matter) that shows the most recent OS that FileMaker Server 5.5 and FileMaker 6 can safely run on ( for both Windows and Mac platforms). Well, quite frankly no surprise, but FM11 still has not corrected the issues with Thai Unicode entry. We will make a decision later this year as to our new DB core, as I'm no longer convinced FM is a solution for our clients, but I get ahead of myself. Inspector, well should have been in FM7 or FM8, a basic intuitive feature, that is still lacking, (buttons and triggers not supported), so right clicking on fields will continue but at a somewhat lower rate. Folder organization should have been done in one upgrade for all areas where needed. I'm upgrading a couple maintenance clients to 11. 1) I've got download links for both, but I want to just download FMP 11 once and add it to all clients on a flash drive. Can I simply use the same software? Is the license key tied to the download somehow? 2) I'm upgrading one client from 8.5/9 to 11 and another from 8 (Donations) to 11. Something weird has changed with FM11 from 10. A report that I have uses a sub-summary that has the option of 'allow part to break across page boundaries'. This looked just fine with v10. But now I notice that the sub-summary is displaying and printing into the part before it, so the text is overlapped. Very odd. If I take off the option to break across page boundaries, then it looks fine and the part appears on the next page (as appropriate). Anyone else experiencing this? I wanted to make sure it wasn't just me before I submit this to FileMaker.

Without UT training, I designed and maintain a FileMakerPro v 7 database utilized by my office. One of several layouts (titled: Students) has a tab system (Contact Info, Contact Summary, Fall 2009, Jan 2010 and Spring 2010). After making an adjustment to a few fields within the Contact Summary tab I then clicked the "Save" option. Since then, the fields for ALL of the tabs have been appearing in ALL of the tabs (See images provided). Thus, the fields for the entire layout are appearing for every tab. We jumped and purchased FMA 11 and then found that runtimes will not work. All computers (no Mac's) give the following error:"The application has failed to start because the application configuration is incorrect. Reinstalling the application may fix this problem." Then I found a post that requires the user to install Visual C++ 2008sp1 Is this new, or did I mess something up along the way? Jim

Hey all. Just got my hands, finally, on FMPA11. First time I tried to connect to a remotely-hosted file, I got the dreaded "The file <> could not be opened. Either the host is not available, or the file is not available on that host." Just to double-check, I tried again using FMPA10. Worked fine. Also under FMPA9. So it's clearly an issue with my new install, not with the host computer. I remember with FMP 9 that when I needed to use my FMP Advanced in a third machine, I had to deactivate it in one of my other two machines. I assumed the same applied to FMP10. Is this still necessary with FMP 11 though? I need to install FMPA in my clients server to work via remote desktop, but I have it already installed in my Mac & Win machines and don't know how to deactivate neither of my two activated copies ... any help? thanks in advance!

I love the idea of these snapshot links. I'm asked for ad-hoc reports all the time and it will be great to e-mail a snapshot link to the person requesting the data and have them see the layout and found set instead of exporting everything to excel. One thing it seems to be missing is storing the sort options in the snapshot link. I tried my first chart today (which is pretty handy) and I thought I'd generate a snapshot from it. The only option I noticed was current record/records in found set. Seems like a silly oversight.

We setup FMServer Advanced 11 on a VMWare virtual server environment. There are on average 40 users logged into the system. We've noticed that for some reason assigning the server two CPUs is much slower overall (navigation/find requests/etc) for the users than just assigning one CPU. There is 8 gigs of memory assigned. Which would be just fine, but we're noticing that the Admin Console is abruptly stopping and the files are no longer being hosted. It's a problem with the module ntdll.dll, which is documented in other posts.
