Somehow I accidentally turned on "Log in using" Account and Password. Boy was I surprised when FM asked for Account and password at next launch. By duplicating my mistake on a scratch file I was able to figure out that the Account had defaulted to "Admin" with no password and I was able to log in. I have now UNCHECKED the "Log in use" option on the File Options panel but at launch FM still requires the login. How do I "remove" the login requirement?

One of our clients messed up their checkbook file and wanted it restored from a backup. We restored the backup file, and now when he opens it, it asks him for a username and password. The client says that he never set a username and password for the file. We have tried Admin and no password, no username or password, and his normal username and password. I have used a Filemaker password recovery program, and for all of the other files, it has a username of Admin and n/a for the password and says they are not password protected files. The checkbook file has n/a for both username and password and also says it inot a password protected file. Does anyone have any idea what we …

When I run the script, I can see in the Data Viewer that the desired Privilege Set Name is identified by FM but when the login script runs, the If statement that checks that Privilege Set Name gets skipped. I've changed the Privilege Set Name, changed the Account Name, cut-and-pasted the name from a Boolean test in the Data Viewer, flushed the cache and moved the If statement into a subscript. Nothing helped. I've also copied the If routine to a different script with negative results but if I do change the If statement to check for the "[Full Access]" Privilege Set, and login …

Hello everyone. I apologize if this is the wrong forum to post this in. I'm having a minor issue with a db I have recently created. I have created a database that my dad uses to track his clients and inventory. As he has several employees who use the database, I have created user names and passwords for all of them to use. Upon a successful log in, I want the current account name (their user name or name) to appear in the top left corner of the screen. I thought the symbol "||" did this, however it seems that it only displays the user name defined in the preferences panel. How can I make FileMaker display the current account name that is logged in? I long ago converted my files from 7 to 9 and revised the access/security for them. All my files, that is, except 1 which is in an ancillary part of my solution. This one file had been stable for years, executing in runtime. I required a username/password to access the .fp7 version of the file, but not for runtime. I need to access that file now, but cannot remember and cannot find the user name and password to get into it to review some scripts. What can I do to break the security?:?

I use Filemaker at work and wanted to start using it at home. A friend at work set up a database for me, so that I would not have to build from scratch. I did not have a chance to open the database for several months, and now have tried, but it is locked with a username and password. My friend does not remember applying security. The tech support at FileMaker suggested I check this forum for ideas or help finding a service to retrieve the username and password.

  9. I have the following problem: How can I inform users that their password has changed BEFORe they try to login? (besides sending an email)?? Here's the situtation: File hosted on Server, with about 20 users (privilege sets: Data Entry or Manager). I am upgrading to new version; have transferred all the data, including the account names from old solution. I am recreating these account names in the new solution, but I have to set the password to a generic one since I do not know it (or leave empty; user has to change it after first login) . 10. Is there anyway to return the rights that a selected user has? Not the current user, but a selected user from a list. I have my user setup layout, where I add users and accounts, but I would like to list what privilege they are assigned. I know I can set a text entry into a field when I create the account, but was hoping there would be a way to put the Get ( PrivilegeSetName) into the field, which should be more foolproof. Using a calc field returns nothing - the new record trigger occurs prior to the account being established - I think that is the problem with that approach. I am building a front end to a database that will be used for iwp web access. I have the basic structure in place already. What I am wondering is can I have a script that opens the back-end with one user, no matter who logs in to the front end? That way I will not have to create new users in the back end, but rather just have a single web-user account. The front end needs separate users, who are then directed to a certain layout by a script. I am sure this must be possible but I have not been able to find a thread on it yet. I have several accounts with conditional privileges set for editing records. At logon, I am running a script that determines which records a user should have access to and puts these values in a global field. The Edit privileges reads this field to apply the right privileges. When a user needs access to a new record, they execute a process that adds the new record value to the above global field. The issue is that when a new record is added through the above process, a user must log out, then log back in to have access to it. However, this should not be required since the conditional privileges should read the new record when it is added to the global field? …

Hi, I work on a database that originally was fairly simple but over time has had more and more components added to it. The relationship screen has gotten to the point of incomprehensibility. The solution we have come up with is parsing out various elements of the database into other files and then linking to them. This has made things easier to keep track of. However, it has created the problem of users having to repeatedly re-enter their userIDs and passwords only to be told that it is incorrect. The problem is that different people need access to different files. What we need is a way where the user can sign on once, and from there he is automatically logged o…

Sometimes the data included can be sensative, like credit card numbers. Question: If a literal string is included as part of a script step, like $key = "ASD87654", when the script is saved is that literal stored as clear text in the FileMaker file or is the script compiled somehow masking or converting the literal string to something that would not be recognizable? 34. Is using Get(AccountName) an advisable key field? I have indexing checked on "All" in both tables. Lookups then function and are a useful part of the solution. Should I anticipate that users will need to change their account name in the future? Also, my users login to create content. The content that they create is modifiable by them, and readable by others per calculation in Manage Accounts and Privileges (Get(AccountName) = Get(AccountName)). So, there are two reasons why the account name should never change. Is this a poor approach? Thanks, Jason

We then send them another encrypted email back that contains the timestamp, the server IP, and the new expiration, which they paste into a dialogue box to complete validation. So if I use the account name as the match field to a related table, then the match field may not be unique. How do I authenticate a user upon logging in, so that I can pull related data (based on that user) from another table? Thanks, Jason

Greetings, I'm about a week in to my first FileMaker DB, and I'm confused about something. I know how to set the user name both simply through preferences and through Accounts menu. What I need to do is assign extra attributes to each user. I created a users table, when I try to access data through that I doesn't filter down to the active user. What am I doing wrong?

Hello Everyone!!! I just started using FM Pro Advance on XP 2 days ago and I need to create a database where all company personnel can go into and fill in their personal details. The thing is everyone is only allowed to access their own personal database and no body else apart from admnistrators(me). I know this sounds very easy but I am very new to this kind of work and i need help. My questions are do I have to create an ID for every single person(so they can go into the database and fill out their details) and if so how do i get them to only access their own "record" and nobody's else?:? :

Okay, folks, I am desperate. The shortest summation that I can give is that I have been having a fight against giving Full Access privileges to a user who has been proven to all (except those in charge) to be incompetent. This person only wants control over others, not to be able to usefully share needed information with the rest of the team members accessing the database. I have been in the crossfire of this admittedly personnel problem, as opposed to an actual DB issue. What I am looking for here, then, are some solid, non-emotional arguments for limiting access, especially to defining fields. The person in question has had limited experience with pre-V7 ty…

Hi all, Currently at work here we have a very messy database that has NO security, the previous database guy left the database in a shambles and we have over 150 databases we need to implement security on. At the moment, if anyone wants to enter some data, everyone in the company shares the same login, they can edit, delete and create new data, its a nightmare. So we are implementing individual logins based on Active directory, however for the time being we want to create 3 log ins. Developer access(can do everything), Data Entry(without the ability to delete records) and Data Entry(with the abitlity to delete records). Now we were testing this out yesterda…

I do not know if I am overlooking something or its just not there. Now, I know that Get ( RecordAccess ) returns 0 to 2. 0 = no access 1 = view only 2 = edit access Although this function seems incomplete because you can define a delete privilege, which can differ from the edit privilege. I need to be able to find out if the current user has the ability to delete the current record without executing a delete command. Thank you in advance for your help! :B

I am unable to open files that I copied from our server (FMS 7)to my laptop. I get the message "The account name and password you entered does not match those for any Filemaker account". I have tried using several user names and passwords that work at the office via the server but none work stand-alone on my laptop. Also, the guest account is greyed out. Is there an issue with moving files from the server to a single user machine? Any way to work around this? Thanks

OK, I'll admit it. I'm an idiot. We have an old database that we only need to view, so I changed the automatic login account to View Only permissions. I believe there is an admin account setup, but the database is set to use the default login automatically. So now, I can't get in a do anything with the database. Is there a way to force login as a different user? Like I said, under file options, I have it set to login as a specific user. I don't see a way to login as a different user. Any ideas? Thanks for the help.

Background: I'm coming from ClarisWorks which I know inside-out and have been using for years to run the company customer database. I'm migrating from Mac OS 9 to Mac OS X (Tiger) and specifically chose FileMaker Pro as it looks and feels sufficiently similar to ClarisWorks to make the migration as easy as possible. (I'm talking about a database of ~1000 entries here.) Yesterday I loaded FM for the first time and spent four solid hours in familiarising myself with it. Fortunately I was using trial data. Today, to my astonishment, I cannot open yesterday's file. It keeps asking for my Admin password. I supply the only password which exists on this computer b…

I've been looking for hours but still have not come across any posts that tell how to lock records. We will have a number of records being shown in a portal. When the "Status" field is set to "Complete", I want to prevent anyone from making further changes. Up till that point, it is fine for them to make changes. It seems like there should be a function called "lock record" or something like that, but I can't find anything. Could it be called something else? I'm using version 7 and version 9. BTW, 9 has some great new features. I was glad we bought it. Thanks for the help

I'm working on a solution where i want to be able to basically create my own user access policy. fairly simple procedure, just create a separate user table, separate access level table, and common table between (as i would with PHP) and just set different access levels to have separate functions. easy for the most part. The reason i am looking to do this is administrative function from within the solution, and works in a standalone solution easily. Is there anything i'm missing about the built in user functions? Also, i'm a little stumped with creating an auto-generated username. i've created a calculation that makes the UN "Firstname.Lastname". works just fine.…

The file is hosted on our X-serve running Tiger 10.4, but FilemakerPro 8.5 is actually hosting the file. I am planning to release a FileMaker DB which will allow users access to ScriptMaker, certain Layouts, Tables, Fields, Relationships Graph, Value Lists etc.. without giving them access to the [FullAccess] account. I have managed to achieve this by creating a series of scripts using commands such as (Open Manage Database and Open Manage Value Lists). Which will allow a non [FullAccess] account user access to these development tools. However I have not managed to find a way to give a user access to the Custom Menus or Custom Functions part of the DB without giving them the [FullAccess] account details. Does any one know any tricks I may have missed?

I am about to release a run-time version to a client and wondered just how secure it might be. I did some research and found out that there is a piece of software that claims to remove all password protection from Filemaker. Check out this link and four $45 you may have your database back! http://www.lostpassword.com/filemaker.htm

So that the user does not see any "Access Denied" records. this is proving tricky for me. I have a field that is filled with the users user name on record creation and this is a hidden field so I would use that this field is called "creator"... anyway thanks for any help anyone in advance.....

This database also contains their username and password in text fields. I would like to be able to create their access to the other databases from within the "Customers" database - and was thinking that it would be much easier to have an ON/OFF toggle type script or function that would allow me to activate or deactivate their access, rather than the current way we do it, which is to add them as users to each database and put in their username, password, click ACTIVE, etc. For instance, two…

So I recently upgraded a production system up to FM9, and immediately (within 12 hours) came across a disturbing issue where a script keeps calling itself in a loop even though there is no loop and no recursive call. At first I thought I'd found a bug in FM9 since using the exact same file with fm8 or fm8.5 did not show the behavior. But copying and pasting the script steps from one script to a new empty script makes the problem disappear, so I guess the file (or at least that script) is corrupt. I've attached the file in case anyone wants to have a look. The username and password for the full access account are both "root". There are instructions in the …
