    Hi, I'm switching form MS Access to Filemaker Pro 10 and now I have a problem with my portals. I have two portals in two different forms ans in one of the form I get a new blank row to insert a new record automatic on the other form this doen not happen. I've checked everything but I can't see any difference in the portals. So where do I set the portal to an automatic new line to insert a new record Thanks

    Hi, I'm having trouble with sorting my records by a timestamp. I want the newest record to be on top of the portal, but when I sort in the portal by timestamp_creation it will put the newest day at the top but have the times backwards.   5. I have a CMS in Filemaker where the fields that remain to be filled in by the user are highlighted in red through conditional formatting. Is there a way to determine which fields on a layout are coloured red, so that when the user tries to exit the record I can check that all the necessary fields have been filled in?     Hi all, I presume I would do this with some form of self-join relationship but cannot really get my head around how to go about this. I have a layout with 10 container fields on there. Document1 Document2 Document3 ... I would like to set a button next to each field "VIEW" but I would only want this button to show if there is something to view in the container field.     Hi. I'm trying to create a report, but I can't figure out how to do it properly. Let me start with an overview of my db. This is a basic project management db for a small group. There is a users table, which simply sets a user ID based on login. A Projects table and a tasks table. Tasks are a child of Projects. So I can have projects without tasks, but no tasks without a project. Here's my issue, I want to create a report that lists all Projects and its tasks.     Is there any type of tool that can identify whether or not a layout is in use? I need to clean up the database and would like to remove unused layouts but not break anything in the process. The DDR provides this type of information for scripts (used in layout, used in script), but not for layouts. Is there an easier way to do this than digging though the database piece by piece?

  11. I have something weird going on. I have a drop down menu that refers to a drop down list. First field contains 3 char initals :FMP second field contains Name: Filemaker. "Intial" is selected from left side window, right side has "Name", both of these fields are on a separate layout with two columns with multiple rows. "Include all values" is selected, and "show all values" is checked.   13. I have a problem that's come up at the end of several steps. Here goes: Table One is called "topics". This table has two fields "topic ID" and "topic Name". Table Two is called "locations". This table has a field with a check box style value list. The value list is generated from the other table's "topics ID" and "topic Name". This all works great.     I know how to make objects transparent but there is no "transparent" setting for text within a field that I am aware of. I would like to have the capability to layer a selection field like ID Number that is formatted to display a drop down list of Names over the field that displays the related names so a user can select from a list of names, change the ID number transparently, then see only the resulting name selected.   15. Folks We have a 75 user site license and are in the process of upgrading those folks to 10 advanced from 9 advanced. The users and I have noticed that list views and portals scroll about 4 times slower in 10 than they do in 9. We have conducted side by side tests. Is this suppose to be this way? The folks aren't happy and I am confused (I am the only one with a Mac and haven't noticed any change between 9 and 10 on that platform) XP Pro sp3

  20. I'm putting together a Invoice layout. The layout is based on Line Items table. I've got a Description of the line item and the number of Hours spent on it both on a Body part, shown in List view. Below the two fields is a line object. The Description sometimes is too long to fit on one line. I'd like to have the Description text wrap when necessary, but the Hours field (which is always a single line) to always snap to the bottom of the part. I can't figure out how to set up the sliding. Any ideas?

    Hi, I have a invoice database set up in which I'd like to control whether or not certain objects print through a script. The reason for this is that I either print an invoice onto headed notepaper or export it to pdf. If I'm exporting it to pdf I like it to have the company logo/details included in the pdf but when I print it I want these omitted (as they're already on the notepaper). At the moment I have added the logo/details in a layout and then manually set them to print or not print depending on whether I'm exporting to pdf or printing.   23. I'm trying to display a simple jpeg in a web viewer on IWP. Everything is fine in FMP, however in IWP the web viewer renders with a 2 pixel border on top and left, even though I have set the borders OFF. I can overlay an invisible box with 2 pixel border to overcome buy this is a real cludge. Also, if the web viewer is set to have a fill colour, and my jpeg is smaller than the web viewer the FMP renders wrongly, bit IWP renders correctly. And another thing, the image is displayed a few pixels right and a few pixels lower. Any ideas?

    Is there a an upper limit to the number of fields you can have in table view? When I create a new field it doesn't appear in browse mode straight away. I seem to have to drag and drop it in layout mode to a few different locations before it will appear as the extreme right hand field in browse mode. I'm hoping the number of fields I can create in this way is infinite. Any thoughts most welcome.

    I've been asking myself this question for a while. It's about the visibility of the ID. I have a value list calling my contacts from a different table. The first field is the ID and the second is a related field calling the cFullName. Everything is basic and works fine. My question is: Is it standard to call a contact only from the ID ? Is it normal in a database to SEE that ID all over the place? I just think it's ugly , it has no other use (even if a very important one) than to relate the tables. But try to explain it to user. I'd rather have just a field showing the name of the contact and somehow hide the ID without confusing the user. Any meaningful thought …

  38. I've perused the forums for an answer to this question and there are some great ideas and suggestions but I was wondering if there is a way to lock a specific Tab at the User Privileges level? I have a layout with 5 Tabs but I want to lock users out of viewing the contents of one specific one. Can this be done when setting up account privileges or perhaps this is more complex? And then I will get this error window usually starting FM9-advance version ...saying 'Other users are running a FM session.. " I can hammer error dialog.. bring up my application and continue on... everything works... until i get into another privilege situation, opening another file, or other places in my app.. Like something is not closed? It only happens sometimes? If i exit back to desktop.. starting FM again, my app says same thing... ONLY if I reboot will it fix it..     I use a certain font type and size as standard throughout my solution. Users have permission to cut and past text from other fields and other sources (eg: web sites, Word documents...) into my solution's fields. I want all the text to look the same. Is there a way to force the field to retain the font characteristics I want despite the formating of the text being pasted in? I tried, via FM preferences, font locking, etc... but without success. The only other way I see as a solution is have have an "Enter" button that is scripted to format the text. One of the MySQL tables is the category names, and I'm trying to use the name field there for a value list in Filemaker. But of coarse I can't pick that table. In a "Person_View" layout I want to implement a filed which allows me to choose a "Role". Question is: should the "Roles" be a linked table or just a value list.     I have a layout with a webviewer and I want users to be able to highlight text within the webviewer which is copied to the clipboard by a script. The first line of the script is "Copy[]" This works fine if the script is run from the scripts menu. I would ideally like the script to be triggered from pressing a button, however when the button is pressed, the webviewer is no longer selected and the highlighted text is lost.   50. I want to create a drop down list of organization names obtained from a field in a table hosted on an Oracle server. Making the ODBC link to the Oracle server is no problem and I can then see the entire table and all its fields in FMP. Using the x relational operator I can then create a portal showing all the organization names in FMP. However, when I try to "Use values from Field:" when creating the value list, the "Specify field" button grays out the ODBC-linked Organization table so I can't select the field I need. If I have the value list on a layout that uses the same table as the value list's relationship is starting from, it works fine.     I have a MySQL online store for antique radio parts, and an FMP file that interfaces wtih it. I have one layout in FMP where I want a drop down menu showing all the product categories. But here's the problem. In the MySQL DB each category has it's category ID, a parent category ID, and a sort order. What happens is, any top level category (Parts, Tools, Supplies) has a parent ID of 0. If you have a sub category (under Parts you would have Capacitors, Resistors, etc), then it's parent ID would be the categroy above it. I have it working but when I scan the barcode i get the characters to show up however it doesnt tab once entered like excel. 1.     Hello, I remember seeing someone mention this in passing, but I can't seem to find where that was (it might have been on a different site). So, my question is, when you're in list mode, is there a way to hide the little indicator of the current record? I'm using conditional formatting to show the active record and a global field to determine which record to work with, so I feel that the little black bar on the left is distracting and somewhat unprofessional Of course, I could just be displaying my data in a less than ideal way.     Hello all, I'm having trouble with record creation via portals and was hoping someone may be able to lend some pointers. There are Contacts, Companies, and then many things that each can have and share such as Phone Numbers, Addresses, Fax Numbers, etc. Contacts should also be able to relate to Companies as well. I've created a large join table called Lookup that can hold all the foreign keys of each related primary key in the other tables. I want new records in Lookup created to tie them together, which works 'half way'. If I add a Phone Number from the Contact layout in the Phone number portal, a new record should be created in Lookup with the two ID's. When…

  63. I am using a letter in FM and use <> <> in a form letter that allows it to dynamically alter the size and spacing. I then used a portal to bring data from another database and when using the same form letter the first and last are not seen on this letter. The fields are <::first> and <::Last>. Is there a way to include this information in the form letter in the database that the information is being portaled into. Thanks in advance for any assistance.

  64. I have a several identical buttons (Jobs, Vehicles, Tasks, etc.) that I'm using for navigation among layouts. All of this works OK, but here's what I'm wondering: If I give each button an object name that corresponds to a layout name, can I use conditional formatting to give that button a different formatting when that particular layout is active? In other words, if I assign the Jobs button the name JobsDetail, can I change the formatting of the Jobs button when the JobsDetail active is active? I am trying to sort a portal with header buttons that sort ascending when clicked and descending when shift clicked. I have the ascending part working with a global field and a calculation field.     Hi Folks, We have a database of vendors who work all around the world. My users wish to see what time it is in the vendor's location without having to do the math in their heads. I have a value list of time zones that are already in use (prior developer), but doesn't have the +1, +5, +/-GMT in the list. Also, the concern with doing a calc of Get (CurrentTime) + TimeZone is that it won't take into account daylight savings. Are there any plugins or pre-made value lists that could help remedy this?     I have a text box that I want to go to and set a variable's value to the value of the text in an edit box. When I step through the code the variable does not retrieve the value and has a '?' when viewed with the data viewer. Also when the goto object code is executed, the value of the text is framed with a dark rectangular box.   71. I have a database in FMP9A which stores records for individuals and a related table which stores incidents. In the table for individuals, I have a GUID field which holds 20 repetitions to store the unique identifiers assigned to each individual. A portal is used to create related records in the incident table. Incidents are logged by GUID. Since one individual can be associated with multiple GUIDs, I currently have a value list created from the GUID field, but this list contains all the GUIDs for each individual in the database and gets cumbersome to navigate.     Hello all... I have a layout with a portal that shows all sales data for a system I have. The portal only shows about 15 records and there can be many more records. I would like to setup a second portal that only shows the last record created with the portal row highlighted. So Portal A shows all records and Portal B right below it will show only the last record created and highlight the portal row. Any ideas on how best to set this up.

I know this is a simple one, but I'm not quite getting it -- instead of labelling a field using text above the field box, I'd like to have the field name *in* the box, and have it disappear if there is a value entered in the field (in which case the purpose of the field won't need labelling). In the olden days we did this with a calculation field, but I know there's a simpler way now with conditional formatting. They are displayed in two portals each. At the top of the form they are side by side and are used for simple entry.   81. Howdy all, I created a value list from my table of Product Types. One of the Types was used in the past but now we use different classifications to describe products of that nature. I need to leave the record of the old type in the table because I don't want to change history. However, when my user is entering data I don't want to give them the option of the old type. Basically, I have a table of 12 records and I want the value list to show only 11 of them. I'm thinking some sort of Relational Value list but I'm not sure how to pull that off since the criteria for exclusion does not exist in another table. Anyone have an idea?

    I have a number of layouts that you reach via buttons that run scripts to choose records, sort, etc. and then goes to layout. On the layout in browse mode I give the user two buttons (unprintable), one to Print and the other to go back to the menu where they came. I have a report that uses 2 subsummaries and one body line. In browse the report is meaningless. It has to be seen in Preview mode. However, I don't know how to give the user the ability via 2 buttons to either print the report or return to the menu. Is there any way to do this in a preview?

    I am trying to use the webviewer to view stored documents (pdfs and jpgs) by using the filepath and filename stored in a field ( appropriately modified to give me a "//drive/folder/filename" format. The pdfs and jpgs are stored in a folder in the same folder that the FM7 files is stored and I use Get (FilePath) and Get (Filename) to get me the path to the documents. It works fine for documents held on my hard drive but when I try to refer to the path for documents held on my iDisk (OSX 10.5) the webviewer reports that the document is not found. Has anyone experienced the same or found a solution? Regards Jim

    Hi ! I'm wrestling with my database and now I'm stuck with this problem: There are invoices in one table. They have Status: "not ready", "waiting for approval" and "approved". The accounting can choose which invoices are shown in the portal. The problem is how to present the Total of each sub group, when portal data is changed. Now it shows only "Grand total" of all sub groups (i.e. even though the invoice is not "approved" yet, it's sum is added to "total") I hope you understood... ???

    Hello I am trying to create a table in Filemaker. To wrap my head around the structure, I set it up in Excel. But I'm not experienced enough with Filemaker to understand how to create the layout, or if it's possible.     This is probably dead easy but I can't get my head round the best way to do it! I have a table called calender (A list of dates and activities) which I want to display as a portal on the frontpage of my application. That bit is easy. However, I want to only display future tasks. If I wasn't using a portal I would probably just perorm a find on the calender layout and just display future dates. Am I able to perform a find on a portal so that it only displays future tasks? If I decide that I want a colour fill (say white)in the portal then the fields will not show or come to the front of the portal. The product table is a list of generic items for retail (shoes, shirts, jewelry, etc.). When setting up a brand, I have a checkbox field that lists all of the products based on a value list of all products, so the store owner can select which products they carry for each brand. I have a few scripts that I have under a custom menu, it would be nice to view that custom menu under layout mode.     Hi, I hope this question makes sense! For each record of a certain table I have 2 value lists. ValueList2 is populated based on what I've selected in ValueList1. Normally I've been creating a new record manually, selecting a value in ValueList1 and then selecting the 1st value in ValueList2, then duplicating the record and selecting the 2nd value in ValueList2 etc etc If ValueList2 eg has 10 values, is it possible for me to create a new record manually, like I've been doing but then duplicate the remaining 9 records using a script? (So that when I look at the 10 records, ValueList1 has been given the same value, but ValueList2 has 10 different ones?)

    Hi, Q1: How would you code a FMP9 drill down UI for layouts that presents a state with the county boundary lines as level one, and county townships and cities as layout level two? The user would drill down from state layout to county layout to a township layout displaying the details. The user would click on the county; click on the township, and view the township detail.
