Hi A client recently reported that his three Windows XP machines had started randomly crashing while running my solution. I have replaced his TaxiCab Manager files with a fresh set - problem persists. The machines share via peer-to-peer. Here's the exact text of the error - I've also attached the screenshot: Hanging application FileMaker Pro.exe, version 9.0.3.300, hang module hungapp, version 0.0.0.0 hang address 0x00000000 Does this error give any clue to where I should start isolating the problem? His IT guy has replaced network cards in all machines. The majority, but not all, of the crashes happen when they go to print. The host c…

So, the question is : What can we do to a file while it is being served ? ( and accessed by users ) Is it save to : create/change tables ? create/change occurrences ? create/change fields ? create/change scripts ? create/change layouts ? Or should this all be done off line ? It would be great if fmi could give us a rebuilder for a file... It will be great to read your feedback !!!

Hi, I know much about File Inconsistency Errors and that one should not continue to use a recovered file as bits of script etc can go missing with the recover command. I use FMS 9,02 and CLients v8,5 in this case (Update is on order). I have a special case here though. I have a relatively large FLAT file with 800 fields in a record and 20000 Records that I inherited from another developer. The file sometimes gives me an Error 640 Failed Inconsitency Check (805) when the FM Server tries to back it up at night. The file is working without complaints though. So I do the necessary: I take the file, compact it and then, all is well again for 1-2 w…

A solution I developed a few yrs ago recently migrated to FMP10 and to the Windows 7 OS. Users use the solution as a runtime app. Since moving to Win 7, we've been having a problem we didn't before. Users have always periodically shut the OS down--either by sudden power loss, absent mindedness or whatever--while the solution was still running. In the past, the file has usually been OK. But since going to FM10 and Win 7, the solution has corrupted files whenever 1- the machine is powered off (in this case, I can accept file damage as pretty much normal) 2- windows is rebooted while the app is still up So I'm trying to figure out why. This is not a serv…

Hello, After trying to install Filemaker Server 8 on my Macbook Pro (Mac OS 10.6.8) and fooling a little with privileges, I am now asked for a password to my 'Filemaker Account', in order to open files that I've been using for years without being asked for a password. I recovered the files and the application in a back up dated before I started installing FMServer, and it still asks for a password. I have Filemaker v8. I either don't know what the user name and password is, or it is stored within these files. This is my personal and business contact file with over 9000 records. I NEED to be able to open it, or save the data somehow. I am willing to throw some …

Hiya I was creating a field in a hosted file and when I went to commit my changes, it crashed and I had to force quit FileMaker... Our server basically had "a moment" - everyone had to be kicked out the server rebooted etc... However I also had open on my machine a local file which I idiotically had not backed up in several days. This happened Friday afternoon. So now I've come in Monday morning with every intention of rebuilding the file due to the potential of corruption, however when I opened it there was no error i.e. no "this file has been improperly closed..." blah blah blah. Does this mean it's safe to continue using or should I still rebuild??? I…

Not sure when this happened but if any (even new) database that I open, if I try to move a field with the mouse, the field snaps back as if it's on a rubber band. I can move a field by the arrow keys, but not by mouse. If I open any database in FM 10A, no problem, but in FM 11A, no can do. I've tried to delete the preferences but that didn't make a difference (user->Library->Pref->(three different plists)). I'm on X.6.8 now. This is on two different Macs. These objects are not locked and happens with both old databases and newly created ones. Anyone have any suggestions? Thanks, Gary

In my database, every user, at login, chooses an organization and a program within it. The data the user sees is filtered by the program id, which is kept in a global variable. The user can switch programs in the middle of a session, but a number of housekeeping operations must occur when that happens. Users can do pretty much whatever they want while in a program; conflicts are nicely managed by Filemaker's record-locking mechanisms. However, there are a few operations, essential but rarely performed, that require that nobody else be in the program at the time. I have tried to manage this by having the OnOpen script create a record in a table called OpenProgram…

Three times in the last week or so I have gone into Manage Database to look at the fields for a table in custom order and found that my previous (non-alphabetical) ordering had been replaced by an alphabetical one. The loss of order also appears to have occurred while I was in the middle of a Manage Database session. I had to reconstruct my previous order to untangle the relationships graph. I have no idea what might have triggered the re-ordering. I checked for file consistency in Recover and discovered no issues. Might my file have nevertheless been corrupted in some way? This behaviour has never occurred prior to these three instances. The idea of going back to an earl…

I love FMpro... or at least I used to. It's so easy to use and so versatile. But I have just found a problem after years of using it successfully. My databases are never that big, or complicated - they just do the job. They usually have a lot of calculations and derived fields, sometimes include relationships but not usually. I am using FMPro V9 on Mac OSXv 10.4.11 But a very recent problem has arisen which I can't undersand. It hasn't happened before. I have a small databse of around 250 records. I chose to delete one record, and it kindly deleted around 50! I hadn't taken a backup, and then, painfully, re-entered the information again. I now take a copy of the…

Hi Everyone, It's been a while since I last posted on here, but I am up against a wall with this problem. I have been working at a new company which has possibly the most intricate and complex FM system I have seen to date. Anyway, I took over here supervising the Filemaker system a couple of months ago and from the very beginning there was a very odd problem where periodically one table in one file would apparently become corrupt. Let me define corrupt in this context: Basically, one table would start causing problems in so far as if you edit (or create a new record) and then commit the changes, it would show the deadly coffee cup and stay that way indefinitely…

I designed a database program from scratch originally using FileMaker 8 and now it is being adopted by my whole office. Since then we have upgraded to 9 an then to 10 and finally 11. We are all using PCs (unfortunately) but Filemaker works very well and recently we installed Filemaker Server so that we can share a master file more seamlessly. About a year ago my Filemaker 10 crashed and was no longer useful. I reverted back to Filemaker 9. Now I have Filemaker 11 installed on 15 units in the office including mine. They all run XP and all work well with the exception of mine. Using Filemaker 11 I can open the file but when I select a field, it goes blank. Additionally, I c…

We have a field in our fm6 (we're in the process of converting files at the moment) customer database at work which shows the salesperson for that customer. Recently this field started emptying itself... This field is unmodifiable in all layouts except in a duped layout for finding and another where certain users can edit the value and are forced through a process where a script is triggered creating a record in a separate report file noting what changes were made, by who and when. So all of a sudden this field keeps showing up with no data in it. But only for some records and not the same ones each time. My colleague and I searched every single script for any …

Newbie Here so please bare with me. Some background Filemaker Server 3.0 Filemaker Client 4.1 When I open filemaker click on host find the server then open the main database window, every file with an fp3 extension open also (the program does work but 15 tabs(fp3 files) appear below the main database window). I was told that this database became corrupted 6 months ago and they called someone in to get it up and running again. Before the database became corrupted I was informed that only the main database window appeared. Can anyone point in the right direction to make only the main window appear again? Thanks for any help Rick

Is anyone else having performance problems with FM 10+ and Windows 7? I am constantly getting a "file damaged" from filemaker on databases. It's on a couple of databases I work on - some from previous versions, others brand new. Some complex, some not. I get it atleast once a day so have to be sure to close the file often as it doesn't necessarily automatically save my layout changes if I go into browse mode. The most recent one this morning is a very basic <10 field database I use to import data from an external source and sort. This morning after I had finished sending the resulting report in pdf, it tells me it's damaged. Upon opening the file, every …

I have a client stuck on a legacy fm6 single-user database. Occasionally (perhaps 1 out of 50 times) they open the .fp5 file, they get an error message that a temp. file can't be created for one of the secondary files. If they click "OK" then immediately exit the app, the problem doesn't recur and everything is ok. Any idea what may be causing this? This is on Windows XP Pro SP3, FM Pro 6.0v4, and the user has 20+ GB of free disk space on their C drive.

We have some lauchers which run based on windows scheduled tasks. When they run they open FM10 Pro and execute the appropriate scripts. This is all occuring on a server which is also running FM10 Server. The system administrator says there have been no changes or updates applied to the server in the last few weeks. Everything has been running fine until yesterday. Now one of the scripts crashes for an unknown reason. There is a dialog box which appears on the administrator's desktop which looks similar to this error (this is for FM11 which I will talk about in a second) Reporting queued error: faulting application FileMaker Pro.exe, version 11.0.2.220, faulting…

Hi, I should begin yelling mayday mayday mayday... I have a big trouble with one of my database (big one) which began to NOT open. On opening, File Maker started with scanning for unused block, then database update passing all records, then message "Encyclohelico production.fp7 could not be opened (Not Open)" Then I tried recover function and get only an empty database, all tables but no field nor data of course, and all the scripts, buttons, etc I tried again recover function but it never passed the step 6 of 14, and I cancelled after several hours. The recovered database weights 225.3 MB (make sense if only layout, buttons, scripts, etc), and t…

Hello, Excuse me for a rather detailed explanation of my DB problem but please understand that this is, literally, my whole work at risk here. Any workable solution, whether given as a free advice or at a professional fee will be IMMENSELY appreciated, I checked the recovery service at Filemaker.com and they charge $500 per file which is fine if my DB is indeed recovered but they state it takes 3-6 weeks which I'm unable to wait as we use this DB on our day-to-day work so as you can imagine I need to have it fixed asap, that means within 12 hours if possible. So here I go: I have an iMac with Mac OS 9.2.2 which I use as a general server for stori…

Hello everybody Today we discovered that our file is corrupted. Somehow there are scripts in the database, that cannot be deleted. Each time we try to, we get the message "Script cannot be be found". Our file is pretty big, and restoring a backup, that has been made 7 days ago, is not an option. That would take to much time. Our file has around 150-200 TOs. Now we are thinking to split the file into several files. Creating a multifile solution. This way, we hope that a corruption will not hit the whole solution. I checked out the seperation model asswell. I like the Interface idea. But speaking of file corruption, is a multifile solution a go…

I've dealt with this for a while and finally think it's time to see if I can get some help.... When I close out FMP and then go to reopen a file nothing happens. Upon checking I see the the process is still running in the background. If I use the task manager to close the process and then click to open the file it opens fine. I can't say it happens 'all the time' because I haven't paid that close of attention to it and don't restart it very often - typically it stays up and running. Any ideas?:??? Thanks! Side note: I've upgraded FMP several times/versions over the years...

I was fooling around with my layout, can't remember what I did, but when I returned to Browse mode, all my fields contained The problem is that I have about 100 fields. Do I have to click-and-select each one by hand? Or is there some way I can ask FMP to do it automagically? More important still, what went wrong, and how do I prevent this happening again?

I have a database that I regularly perform a recovery on - just to ensure its integrity. I have NEVER used the recovered database - only used the recover command to monitor integrity. Recently the interface file produced errors when a recovery was performed with a message that the file should no longer be used going forward. After extensive testing and analysis of the recovery.log it appears that whenever all the objects on a layout are moved a few(4) layout objects raise errors. Even only moving a subset of objects can raise the issue - but selecting all is the acid test. I can then recover the RECOVERED database and no errors will be flagged. If I then repeat the proce…

My apologies, this may be a bit long. The short question is, is this file damaged? Here is what happened. This morning FileMaker 10 advanced reported that the file I was working on had become corrupt and then crashed. The database itself was being served by FileMaker 11 advanced server. I checked the server logs and the only thing listed was a warning saying that my session had become inactive and had been disconnected. I had the server verify the file. The verify passed. I had the server make a backup of the file and then used the recovery tools in FM 11 advanced to check the file. The consistency check reported 0 bad blocks. I then did a re…

I unfortunately had a problem just before closing a database file. I am not sure what happened, but I think it was a hard drive issue. now my database is corrupt. I used recovery and all seems fine. I am reading that I should now use a back up database and import the new data. I have 12 tables and this seems like a lot of work. 1) Is it still the case that the recovered file could have errors in layouts and/or scripts? 2) When I check for consistency of the crashed file, I get "23747 total blocks, 23747 processed blocks, 9 bad blocks." What does this mean? Thank you again for any help that comes my way, Fed

I’m transitioning my primary FM development from PC/WinXP to Mac/10.6.3 and will use Time Machine (along with a WD external HD) for backups. I understand that Time Machine will back up hourly (“in the background”) those files that have changed since the last backup and that the backup will occur while I’m developing. My question/concern: If I’m working in a file that has changed since the last backup, is there any danger in TM backing up (copying) that file while I’m working on it and it is open? I thought that you should never copy a file when it is open except when using “save as”.

Filemaker seems to be stuck in a recursive loop, for when I saved a formula, accessing a previous repetition of a repeating field, I was never allowed to access the file again. I get a never ending spinning circle. This also occurs when opening the file. Is there anyway to bypass computations of formulas and open a FileMaker file without it going through the process? Apple-period has no effect. That used to work in earlier versions of FileMaker. Because I cannot access the code, I cannot duplicate it here. I use FM Pro version 7.

I have a filemaker 11 file that I have been developing since version 9. Everything has worked fine on it until today when I took advantage of the new layout folders option. I put all of my layouts into folders and then I noticed one of my navigation scripts stopped working for 1 layout. This layout is called "Quotes". The script has the step "Go To Layout By Name" that is set to a global variable containing the appropriate layout name. Every other layout works except Quotes. In the script debugger I get an error 105 "Layout Missing". The weird thing is if I delete my quotes layout all together and create a new layout called "Quotes" it still doesn't work, but i…

I have a system I'm working on that could very well be the most mistreated system I have ever be exposed to. Too many relations, unstored calcs, legacy junk that nobody can remember if it's useful or not, etc, etc. Couple of days ago it just stopped indexing a couple of fields, and then the next, and then the next, to the point now where it is clear we have a handful of fields that simply WILL NOT function after a recovery on the indexes is performed. They work for a few hours and then die. So, my thoughts are that since they have no clean copy, backups are indicating damage as well, and a rewrite would take a month or two, to keep them afloat I was going to d…

Hi, I have a very strange problem with a table. The table only shows 1209 records, and I know the table contains more than 135,000. The thing is that with a relation I can display all the records in another table. When I perform a Find in the table it shows the records correctly, but in the status bar displays in example something like this: 25468 / 1209, meaning that the found records are more than the total records. I tried saving a compressed copy, nothing happens. I work with FM server 9 and FM pro 8 for the clients in windows. Any idea on how to solve this will be highly appreciated. Best regards, Mauricio

Hi there, I would like to think I'm pretty proficient with FMP, however, I have just run into a problem that I'm really scratching my head over. I have a filemaker file that is being hosted in a central location, and being shared over the network by myself and my boss (we're the only two). My boss is having a lot of issues with filemaker crashing... several times a day. I on the other hand have not experienced these problems. We have tried having him host the file on his computer, which worked for a couple days, but the crashing has started up again for him. When he recovers the file the result is that there were problems detected. It says that it scanned and re…

Filemaker is locking up after a few minutes use on a client computer. The file is runs fine on other client machines,no problem. So I believe the file is sound and the problem rest with this particular computer. Either something is missing or conflicting with Filemaker. I have done a clean install of Filemaker but that did not correct the problem. The only recent change was the uninstall of a spyware removal program, which was also removed from the other computers too. Like I said the other computers are fine. Yesterday morning when we opened Filemaker (on 3 different computers) the same dialog box appeared on all 3 systems with the following message: “The feature you are trying to use is on a CD-Rom or other removable disk which is not available.” So I went through the control panel, add remove software and did a repair using the original install disk. This seemed to correct the problem until the computers were restarted again. Same message appeared on all three computers. I went through the same procedure above and Filemaker opened, no problem until another restart. I also tried a clean install of Filemaker, same thing after a restart. Let me add, because I …

A user pointed out to me a single record that every field is populated with "?" and can't be editted. I read online that this is rare, but that it is a corrupt record. I looked through the entire database, it is the only one like this. So I looked though my backups, and found one with an intact copy of this record. So now I have imported the record back in... works fine... but I can't seem to permanently delete the old corrupted record. Hi, How are you all? Hoping all of you is in good time. I am working on a Filemaker database which has grown much older. I have an unstored calculation field that is a 1 or a 0. There are multiple records that have the value 1 and multiple records that have the value 0. When I perform a find in this field, no search results are returned for 1 or 0. I can sort by this field properly. Is this a corruption problem? If so, what is the best remedy? I could not find a better place to post this so I hope this is ok. Whenever I enter a field in any of my databases and double-click to select the contents, I run the risk of the screen appearing to shift a few millimeters down and to the right, black borders appearing top and bottom and getting Microsoft's standard error message referencing "filemakerpro.exe" encountering difficulties. FileMaker closes and scans for unused blocks when I reopen it. Usually nothing but time is lost but this is extremely aggravating - anyone know what gives?

Its the strangest thing. I back up my database between my laptop to desktop everyday. During my last back-up I noticed a lost 4 records. It was upsetting as this represents a bit of work to me. After I finished a record I sent the database back to my laptop with one new record. Surprisingly the 4 lost files reappeared and the new file I just created disappeared. I tried sending the file between laptop and desktop again and the same thing happened. Very bizarre. How can I stop this odd behavior? What is going on?

Hi -- I just deleted some old table Occurrences ... trying to clean up ... and I may have left some scripts around ... yesterday (when i did it) everything seemeed to be working fine ... today however ... 1. My startup script won't copy container fields to global container fields 2. Perform Find doesn't work ... it cannot find anything. 3. Any form that has Child records (in a portal) ... won't show the child records. (but, they are still there ... I can see them on a different Layout). The Filemaker Profile attached is ocrrect and explains my environment. Thanks.

This has happened to me a couple times and I was wondering if there were an easier way to fix my problem. I moved a file from my desktop to the server and hosted it. Once hosted the file will no longer let me type in my admin password in order to update the file. In the past I've had to find the old copy, import records and reload after changing the user preferences. Is there an easier way? This particular file is not as easy to import records as there are portals of data and the normal user login will not allow me modify layouts etc...

Hi all, Okay, you're going to laugh, but I'm going to ask this question anyway. I've been developing all day (and haven't backed up since first thing this morning) in FM Pro 10 Advanced. Somehow (don't ask how!) I've ended up on a layout where I have a field that requires a value, but is set to be not modifiable. Oops. I can't get out of the record without getting the "{field} is defined to require a value. You must enter a value." message. If I try to type something in, I get that "This action cannot be performed because this field is not modifiable." I can't delete the record or quit. But I can get into ScriptMaker or open new windows and do things on ot…

Hi all, I've been a voyeur on here now for a while and have learned some pretty invaluable lessons from you clever folk. I'm a total FM newbie but decided to try and teach myself it in order to replace my companies aging and unsupportable mysql/html database system. Last week I suffered a non recoverable data corruption (Something to do with the permissions been tampered with?) on the DB which made me return to the previous back up. I created a 'clean' file and started again, copying and pasting layouts etc and imported the tables/scripts etc. This made me very nervous and therefore I started to create a backup every hour. Ive come in today and the last 6 ba…

This is so bizarre. Using FMP 6.0 for Mac. I had several DB files open that are stored on an additional non-bootable HD on the G4. We had a power failure and the computer crashed with all files open. When power resumed and I booted up, I ran Disk First Aid and repaired permissions. Once that was completed, I launched my usual apps. When FMP launched, I could not find certain files to open. They were actually physically missing from the folder they were stored in or not visible anyway. I have tried to find them using FMP recover, various search options, restore options from Norton Utilities among some others and cannot see where the files have gone. Can anyone offer a…

*** Logfile reports corrupted fields / Custom Functions - also in really NEW FILES. *** Either the recovery logfile of FM 10 is completely useless and we simply should ignore it, or FileMaker (v9, v10) really generates reproduceable corrupted structures within THE ORIGINAL FILE. Tested with FM 10.01 Adv (Mac) and FM 9.03 Adv (Mac and PC). Lots of other developers could reproduce the problem with their environment (Win XP Pro, SP3 / FM 9.03 Adv / FM 10.01 Adv). We already have a (german) thread about that issue at http://www.filemaker-magazin.de/fmmforum/90710.html Try _exactly_ the following to reproduce the bug: 1. generate a completely new file with FM …

The database in question is not overly large.. less than 2,000 records, about 50 fields and 40 scripts. No outside data sources; no web involved, etc.. Basically used on one Mac to track membership and services including invoicing for a Mac user group. It was originally written in FM Pro 4 or 5 and has migrated up the ladder without any problems. With one exception, it continues to work just fine in FM Pro 10. The exception is when one chooses Database in the File>Manage function. Accounts.., Value Lists, Layouts, Scripts and External Data all pop up immediately. But choosing Database brings this database to its knees. Making that choice results in the good o…

The debate continues... If one needs to use the Recover command after a crash, to pull data from a solution for importing into a new solution, we have been told over and over that we should NEVER EVER use a file which has had Recover performed on it. And now, this has been pointed out to me. We are told that vs. 9 is MUCH BETTER at identifying problems within a solution because of its refined scanning; but does that mean a file is safe to continue using if it has been served and it crashes? What if we get NO scanning message on re-open ... is it THEN safe? Is it EVER safe to use a file which has been improperly closed? Is it ever safe to use a file which h…

Struggling to recover lost data due to a problem this afternoon, hope the wise ones here can help. Been hosting two databases (DB) via IWP using FMP9 Advanced and a MacPro for months. Today while working on database 2 trying to run a new report, FMP crashed completely and immediately. No problem, restarted FMP and opened up both files. DB#2 recovered fine, dB#1, not so much. DB #1 says has lost all data, script and layout changes back to Feb 25th (about a month). Indeed I have hardcopy proof in front of me of reports I ran from FMP yesterday, but that data is not to be found. Now the real oddity. I backup this directory every day, and every backup of DB#…

I have both a 5.5 FMP database that 'drops' random fields of information when I open the file. It's about 6meg in size and about 1200 records. I've reloaded the data and the same problem occurs the next time I open it . . only to different fields. I thought perhaps it was a 5,5 problem so I created a 8.5 database that duplicates the first. No help, same problem. Is it related to my caching size or is there something else I should be checking. My problems are happening in XP.

Hi all.. First I'd like to ask someone to tell me how I could have been using Filemaker for five years and not known about these forums?? I've learned more trolling the forums for the past month than I have in years!! Anyway, on to my question... As I mentioned I've been using Filemaker since just after 7 was released. Now using 8.5 Adv. Several years ago I had a scare where after connecting an external hard drive that wouldn't play nice, I had several kernel panics while developing on FM7. The result was corruption in my file that I hadn't even finished working on - when I created a new record it wouldn't move to the new record, instead it would stay put on t…

Probably a Windows prob, not Filemaker but here goes... I made a DB for a friend in FMP9 on my mac. I imported most of the data in FMP9 on my mac. She only has FMP 8.5 and uses Windows. When I handed it over onto her laptop we tested and it worked and she added some more data. When she got it home and put it on the Windows desktop machine it opened and looked OK. (She insists its Windows XP with SP2). When she tried to edit existing data or add new data to some text fields, regardless of what she typed, she only got a ? in the field. I'm pretty certain that space and formatting are ok. So she zipped it and sent it back. And I opened it (now using my F…

Hey everyone, got a bit of a quandary in our database that i can't quite solve. We are running some legacy databases from the days of FMP7, upgraded to FMP 8 (clients and servers). We have around 5 database files all linked together and related to each other for the various departments of our company. Its a rather small database, only about 15 people using it. All of our database files are roughly 100 to 200 megabytes in size, Minus one database. Funny thing is it is not the most complex and largest database that we have in terms of records/relationships/fields/tables, etc. However it is growing quite large: 1.8 gigabytes currently!! Previously we enco…

Hello everyone, Please help, I'm practically in tears and about to tear my hair out! I work for a non-profit organization that provides relief to Africa. Hi everyone, I've been using Filemaker 7 for quite some time, and I mainly use it to store a detailed database (consisting of four files in co-relation) based on my music collection. I store in the container fields the covers of all the records, and the main file where they are stored has grown to a size of 4,9 gigabytes. However, I've always worked perfectly well and with no major problems. Occasionally, due to some error of my part, I had to run a consistency check on the four files that make part of my database, but everything was ok afterwards. Now, two days ago, after closing the main file (the one with the 4,9 gigas), Filemaker displayed an error message saying that…

Hello All, Looking for input on strange corruption issue. The scenario: Table A has an un-editable record that displays “?” in each field. This record breaks certain scripts. I assume the record is corrupt. The procedure I followed was: 1 copy file 2 Open copy and delete all records from table A 3 save copy as compacted, delete first copy 4 open original file, go to table A, find all records, omit the corrupt one. 5 export good records (did this twice, once as csv, other as fm file) and verified corrupt record did not export 6 Imported records into compacted copy (which has zero records in it). The corru…

Hi All - Thanks in advance for reading my post on my problem. I have a FM database to record qualitative historical research. It's all been going fine until today. I went to create a new record, and when I wrote in one specific field and then clicked the previous record button, the program unexpectedly quit. Only in that sequence of events does this happen - but it happens every time I do it. A friend of mine created a database of contacts in FMP7, based on one of the built-in FMP templates, which he named 'Filemaker Email List - Venues.fp7'. The file was on his desktop, in Mac OSX. He decided he wanted to change the name of the file to something shorter, so he rename it on his desktop the way you commonly do on a Mac, by clicking into the file label and just typing in the new name. Somehow, in the process (perhaps he didn't get the .fp7 extension right?), the file transformed itself! Now, rather than being his database, it's converted itself to "Font Book" -- "Get Info" indicates the File Type as "UNIX Executable" while retaining his original filename…

Hello, Our main computer (Windows XP) has both FMP 8.5 Advanced and FMP 8 on it. When I double-click a file it opens FMP, then closes right away again, before the file even opens. When I just start Filemaker, it works fine, but when opening a file from there it shuts down. It appears that the file opens for an instant, then FMP shuts down. This happens only on this computer, but with both FMP 8.5 Adv and FMP 8. I'm concerned that our data file may become corrupted since its being so rudely aborted. I was also connecting to this computer thru a Remote Desktop Connection, and using FMP 8 to work on the file while someone else was using the file in FMP 8.5 Adv. FMP…

Hi Guys, Just thought I would ask for some advice on File Corruption. I'm developing my system using FMSA on my Macbook. The files are being hosted on this machine, however I've occasionally ran out of battery power or I've switched off my computer whilst the file was being hosted or the computer has gone into sleep mode if I was not using it for a while. Can any of these actions actually corrupt my file, although their is no evidence that they gave been corrupted does anyone recommend a utility that will tell me whether the structure is still intact. Thanks Jalz

Hi, Everytime I perform a search for matching field contents FM crashes, BUT this only happens when in fields with a checkbox set in their lay-out... I am getting weird data corruption. I have a large system that runs a school (interface file with data separation). It is on a dedicated Mac OS X Server (10.5.4) running server 9.0.3. I have a mixed bag of clients running 8.5 and 9.0v3. The reason I believe the problem is corruption and not a scripting error is that these processes have been executed too many times to count - flawlessly. 1) issue #1: Have a process of using a plugin to create teacher comment databases for grade reporting. Those databases are then transferred back into the main system. There are about 100 databases and starting last term, I had a incident where the client transferred a database …

I tried to perform the same find and it gave me that "?" for every single field again. Has anyone experience this before? Or is it a corruption' sign? Hello A while ago I developed a filemaker database for a small not for profit organisation. For the last couple of years they've been using it no problem, but recently it's started 'hanging'. Well sort of! They can be working away on it and it's all fine, they can quit without any problems and it saves the info fine. But then without warning and any sign of problem, the Quit Filemaker option disappears from the menu and it seems to not save information they've just entered. They haven't been able to spot any patterns in what causes the problem. Filemaker support themselves haven't come across this problem before and can't help. They've tried reinsta…

I've got a file in 9 that is being served by FMS9. When making changes, I close the file from within server and stop the server, then open the file in FM9A. If I open the file from directly within the Database folder it seems fine. But if I copy the file to the desktop and open the copy, I get a "File wasn't closed properly, performing consistency check..." message. This seems pretty unusual. Why is copying a file causing the FM9 check to fail? Is the file not REALLY closed? Thanks, David

I bought FileMaker Pro a few months ago and built a database to manage my web design clients. It's worked perfectly until just now - when I opened it up, all records except one are gone. The remaining one is the last one I created, but I created it about two weeks ago, and I've used the database to look up or edit info in several other records over those two weeks. I used it yesterday to do this and had no issues with it at all. I don't understand what could have happened - any suggestions? I had around 40 records in this DB.

This one record will not go away despite many different techniques employed. Anyone seen this problem? solution?

I have a DB that is crashing on me, which may be a subject for another post, but I wanted to mention my observations from the crash. I get a license error after restarting FM and trying to open a server hosted DB. The launcher (local file) runs without a problem. I know that I can clear the error with a reboot, and that's always fun, but I've noticed I can also just trash my plist. I have seen it mentioned somewhere that this issue might be caused by my computer using a static IP. Any info or comments on this?

Hi all, I have an old database file 4.0 (Mac) that I upgraded to 9.0. There is a report that we need to run frequently and then do a manual sort. When I sort by field 1 it works. Hi all, I got a question regarding a corrupt script. What should I do on the situation like this. I have several options: 1. Should I rebuild everything again because of a corrupt script? 2. Or can I do copy and paste for scripts and layouts to the brand new files with the hope (the corruption will not taken to the new file)? 3. Or is it still okay to use the file where there is a corrupt script? The behavior of corrupt script, when you tried to edit it, it would say "The script could not be found or has been deleted." I have encountered a nasty situation where something is amiss with the display of FileMaker windows. It only occurs in a multi-file solution that I have upgraded from FMP 4 to FMP 9 through FMP 8.5. It does not occurs with 8.5, only 9. Dimming of the title bar also occurs and then the window you see on screen is not the window shown as the active window in the Windows menu. I've got a file that was exhibting corruption in a layout element. A tab control was acting bizarrely, expanding and ghosting when switching between panels in both Layout and Browse Modes. I deleted the entire layout and built it again, unfortunately, while working in that file, it appears to be crashing every other time (or so) I use it. So that file is hosed. I've had issues with FM9 quiting on me a lot. Has anyone else had this issue? Now I have a database that freezes every-time I try to open it. FileMaker even freezes whenever I try to recover it. Hi, I've an annoying problem. I have a ghost record in a table (see attachement). I can't delete it (in fact I can delete it, but the total record count doesn't decrease and then it's back on reopening the database). I can't search it either. See attachment. I god rid of it once by cloning, but since it's in a file that has many table, it's very cumbersome to clone it and restore it. This table is emptied every day (delette all) and filled up with an import. Did someone noticed that kind of Ghost records ? How to avoid its creation ? Thanks P.S : also occured with server 8 and 8.5 client
