  1. Hi All, Ok.. I want to make my new database easy for admins to add/remove value lists as products change or grow. Typically, I would just make Value Lists and enter in values there, but for future use, they are tough to edit add/remove items as things change, So this time I am making a "setup" layout that they can enter in values via portals of common items that can then be used later as value lists. My dilema is that I have roughly 20 values lists I would like to create.. so do I make 20 databases with the list items for each, or one database with all the value fields for everything and then in the setup page, just filter the records to those with the data…

I have a dwindling value list I created ( see attachment) which appears to work but if I make some changes the value list does update straight away (as least on fields where a change has be made).   4. Fairly new to the understanding the web viewer. I have a website field on my customers layout, where a user can enter the website address. There is a button that launches the web viewer on another tab so that one can look at the customer's website. I just found out that Filemaker needs the "http://" to be part of the address for it to work on a mac, so I created a check to see if it is there, and if it is not it adds it, but why do I still get "http://localhost/" when trying to load it?

  5. Hi All My company are still in the process of migrating from FM6 to FM11. We are currently in the process of double entry testing - we have selected users in the office who are doing their daily jobs in FileMaker 6 and FileMaker 11 to test everything behaves as it should do. However there is one small thing which is causing our users problems... In the Window menu in FileMaker 11 it shows the name of the server the file is being hosted from in brackets.     I am trying to create a portal in a standard form view that shows a list of all the records from the same TABLE. Therefore I have a table called INVOICES. In form view I have my Invoice layout, and that generates new Invoices (records). I want to see within this Invoice layout a portal listing of all these records (Invoices). Obviously not all the fields, just a short hand reference like the kp_ID and the client name. Currently I have to 'go to layout' , list view, to see a list of these records. It would be more convenient to have this list within the form layout. Is this possible? My setup follows the kp and kf protocol. Thanks Matthew

  9. Hi, new to Filemaker and these forums. I'm using Filemaker 10 Advanced. I have a conditional value list in a drop down that works great in Filemaker; however, when I tried to use the conditional value list through the web published version of my database it no longer works (that is, the conditional list is just empty). I guess this is due to the selection being local to the web-browser and not sent back to the server, so a related value list cannot be constructed for the secondary dropdown. Is there a way around this in the web interface? Can I fire off a script or something to get the related value list? Thanks

    I know I have done this in the past but can't find my notes. Is there a simple method of displaying the running count of records grouped by category and resetting each time category changes. i.e. DVD's grouped and sorted by category and title. Want the count to reset to 1 each time a new Category is displayed. I realize I can create a Script to run each time I use the report and create a field which is updated with the appropriate number but wonder is there an easier way. The option of using "Restart Summary for each Sorted Group" on the Summary field does not seem to be available.

    I would like to create a list of documents (within an established database), similar to what would be seen in Excel, as follows: the first column would be dates, the second the name of the document (hyperlinked to the corresponding file on my machine) and the third column would be a memo field.     Good Morning, I'm trying to put together a layout that will allow end users to select items to be printed in a report. The selections are laid out hierarchically, and there will eventually be several hundred choices, so the best format would be an expanding tree structure with checkboxes to allow someone to select an entire directory or expand it out and only select certain pieces of equipment. The structure may rarely require going down as many as six levels, although most often the user will only be drilling down three or four levels for the report.   17. Hiya, I have created a Runtime running in Kiosk mode. When I run it, the rest of the screens (two screens) go black. This means the user can not access anything else on the desktop (not related to the Runtime Application) whilst they are using it. Is this normal? What I would like to see is the application in its "popup" window sitting on the desktop with everything else on the desktop visable. Am I missing the point of running in kiosk mode? Cheers

    I have built a calendar in one of my databases that needs to be in Preview mode with printing 7 rows across for it to layout correct. I would like a view it on my ipad through filemaker go and as we know you can't view in Preview mode with Filemaker Go. does anyone know how to layout records in Browse mode across and down.   20. My users would like to be able to use the mouse scroll wheel to scroll vertically down the layout instead of scrolling through records. Is there a file option or a FileMaker preferences option to achieve this? I've read that this might be possible by hiding and locking the status area, but ideally the users would still have access to the Status Area and while being able to scroll down the layout using the mouse scroll wheel. Edit: I just tested the hide/lock status area. It does prevent scrolling to the next record but you still can't scroll vertically down the layout. Thanks

    I am attaching a sample file to try and show what it is I am trying to accomplish. In the sample file I have 4 tables. Vendors, Products, PO and PO Line items. The goal is to have the product id list in the portal on the purchase order show only the products for the vendor the po is being created for and not all the products for all the vendors. The first level is "related to", the second level is "job number" (which is conditional based on selection of the first), and the third is "hull" (which is conditional based on the second). The first and second work great, however, the third only works halfway. This is basically setup as a filter. There are four options in the first level: related to - "vessel", "overhead", "warranty", "facility". Once one of those items is selected, the second level "job number" is filtered into those four categories for selection. Now these product items can be selected by the employee on a per project basis.     Hi there, In my solution I'm working with several portals. In these portals the users can click on a little green + icon in a portal row to go to a new layout and add a record. But always is there an extra row visible in the portal. It is not a related record. The key field is the <Nummer> field. Portal Filtering (Nummer > 0) is not working either. I then use table B through a relationship to add data to table A after which a script will run to export data from A into another table. The problem I can't solve is if the related field has no match in table B no data will be added to table A.     Hey all, first post. I am a novice filemaker user since I had to construct a series of databases for my employer. I don't know too much but I learned enough to make databases that worked well. I come asking for help. On one of my layouts it needs to be trimmed so that multiple copies of the layout can fit on one page. However, some of the fields may have more entries than allowed. Is there a way to make the field spill over into another field right next to it, and if so, how? I guess a two column approach would work the best, but how do I get it so that it won't repeat the values, and instead continue from where it left off?

    I have 5 layouts. 4 of the layouts 'can' access layout #3. I want Layout #3 to have a "RETURN" button that when pressed, takes the user back to the 'original' layout from which they came. Seems like GOTO LAYOUT ORIGINAL should do that? I created a button and in Button Setup specified Goto Layout - Original. It does NOTHING. So, I wrote a script and put GOTO lAYOUT -ORIGINAL in the script and hooked it up to button. I tracked it in debug... it executes but goes NOWHERE.     Hi there, Again a little issue here. I'm sure that the solution must be simple but I was not able to find it. This is the case: I have a portal in wich documents (pdf files) are added for archive purposes. It is possible to open the document by double clicking the field with the program specified in the system preferences. The field must be in browse mode for this action. In this case it is possible to erase the field content and that is what I want to avoid. Users clicking the field must not be able erase the fieldcontent.   35. On a given layout we have a tab tool with six or so tabs. Operators will often flip to a different layout (script driven navigation)and then come back to the original layout with the tab tool. Each time they return to the original layout the tab tool resets itself to the default tab. Is there a way to make the tab tool recall where it was left and stay there?     I've got a single Filemaker database that contains tables for supporting three separate but business-related databases, Loans, RMAs and Rejects. (This also links to a number of other legacy databases which support other aspects of the business.) I present these to the user in separate windows, so they see them as three discrete databases. Example: I have student grades and each grade has the term (grade year) so that I can select each years grades separately. The user could also add various merge fields from a list on the right hand side to the body of the text and then save the letter as a template. Then when it came to printing a letter to a contact in the database, the user has a choice of previously saved templates to send to them. I would like to display only records of one particular year at a time. Very rarely a user goes back to viewing previous years' data.     For some reason, I cannot add borders. When I check the boxes left right top and bottom it doesn't show any borders. Also, when I click in a field in browse mode it doesn't show the cursor, text selection or anything I am typing in there. I have to click out of the field to see what I typed... Also also, when in layout mode, when I select a field to move I don't get the border and little resize things in the corners. Anyone seen these issues before?

This is fast and works great but if the field is empty it breaks the relationship. Is there a way to have maintain the relationship and show all contacts if the field is empty? I realize that there are portal filtering and find and replace workarounds but I am trying to find a way to do this with a regular relationship.

    I have just made my first foray into conditional value lists which seem to be working ok when I add a new record. I select a value from the first field which then gives me the correct options on the second field and so on for five consecutive fields. My little problem is that in find mode when I select a value in the manufacturer field I am given the correct values to select in the model field but after that the next three fields have no value in the value list. Because it works fine in browse mode when I add a new record, should I expect it to work the same in find mode?

You can see the window in this link: Each of the 20 boxes are portals showing data according the Call Sign on blue box. The setup for each is identical. I have a portal showing records of Contacts, where the filter criteria are: - The contact is specified as an Ongoing Pledge (OGP) donor; - The most recent donation from them was NOT received in the current month. This displays a list of all donors with outstanding monthly donations for THIS month.     I've created a really basic 'Gender' drop down list with custom values 'Male' and 'Female'. Why can't the user drop an item from the list into the associated field? I can highlight 'Male', for instance, but it won't go into the field. The field has a default setup, ie: it's marked to accept data entry in Browse and Find modes. Short of hiring a graphic designer (meaning big $$$), is there a website or book that you know of that shows different database designs? The parent table is the person, and I'd like for the database to be able to generate a resume. The amount of information stored will total from between 15-80+ pages. All I'm trying to do is to create a value list based off a global field of available unused numbers within a set range. I have unique serial numbers for each record but this is a housing rentals db and they are assigned key numbers per property.     In the image below there are two CommNonComm fields. The one at the top is a standard text field. The one below it is actually 2 fields set up as one item radio buttons. Each one of these activates a different script trigger. As you can see, both comm and noncomm are highlighted. This could create confusion among employees. What I would like to do is place the upper (text) field over the lower fields but I need for the script triggers to activate when I make a selection.     I have a pretty simple setup: Members is the ONE table Chairs and Dues are 'many' tables. Each 'many' table resides on a portal on a tab on Members. They work. In order to allow the user to print the portal information, I put a 'print button' on each portal. When pressed, it executes GTRR ... This works. The weirdness is as follow: When I am in "DUES" and enter 3 rows, for example, in the portal and then press the PRINT button, it opens a window, inserts the PRINT_LAYOUT and shows the portal contents.     I have a many-to-many relationship that is not producing the sub-summary sort that I expect to see. Basically, I can add a portal viewing the relationship that I want to sort and I can see all of my related records. however, when I switch the layout to a list view and add a sub-summary section using the same relationship that worked in the portal, I can only see the first related record after I do my sort. What gives? I've never had any problem with sub-summary sorts before but this is driving me up the wall.

I have a column marked paid, which is a value list, of (Paid,Un Paid, Carry Over,Time & 1/2) ect. I also have a column for work hours.     Hi I have a problem with the fields and adjacent subtitles on the layout when I print out a report from Filemaker. It seems that whilst the layouts all look aligned and neat, when I print out the actual report, a subtitle and corresponding field seem ever so slightly misaligned. I have been through the sliding menus but this just does not seem to do anything and I still have the same issue. Does any one have any idea on how I can tie together both the subtitle and field so that they are always aligned horizontally. It just look a bit unprofessional and messy at the moment! Thanks

The invoices that it generates only accept up to 19 Rows of line items then it won't print anymore. I'm in need of how to make it generate more pages if there is more line items.   99. Everytime I think I have it I get confused. I have an EXCEL spreadsheet with 500 students listed on it. It has their grades by what period and who the teacher is. Not all students have all 7 periods. Some have one some have more than one. This report is only for failures. The periods are listed under the column Period. I am not sure how to set up the layout to be able to accept the import correctly.
