I have some simple databases that I like to give to a friend who does not have FMP. Can somebody advise me if there is a DB application that allows one to export date to or import data from FMP? Or even better do a save as? It is important that the new DB can be edited so that my friend can add stuff or delete. Also, if it is easy to create the DB and maintain it would be great - programmer skills are very limited. BTW. It needs to be able to run on a Mac and be a standalone application. Preferably Plug and play and easy to use. Looking forward to your suggestions ...

I notice FileMaker 18 technical requirements (https://www.filemaker.com/products/filemaker-pro-advanced/18-technical-specifications.html) requires a minimum 10 year Windows PC (Windows 7 SP1 Professional Edition) but with only minimum 1.5 year old Mac operating system (macOS Sierra 10.13). Even the RAM requirements are double for the Mac. This is making it very difficult and wasteful to support Mac installations as perfectly useful Mac computers are incompatible at all or with major OSX upgrades which are not always simply installed. What is happening here with FileMaker or Claris because this is not a equal playing field.

LS, We are using the MediaManager plugin for manipulating images and store them in a shared folder. This folder is then accessed even thorough the web. The problem I encounter is the following : Some clients work with Terminal Server. The image is manipulated and then exported to a folder ( on a shared folder on MacOSX ). The folder has the correct rights settings, but the file just gets administrator rights, nothing else. FMClients kan view the files ( photo's ) on both platforms, but websites can't download of display the file in a browser. Any thoughts ? Thanks in advance !

I don’t remember seeing any posts about problems associated with using El Capitan and FileMaker Pro 11 or for that matter 12.0v5, & 13.0v5 I have several files written in FileMaker Pro 11, and I would like to continue to use them in 11 and eliminate the time-consuming conversion to FileMaker Pro 14. With all of the problems surrounding FileMaker Pro 14 and (Servers) I'm reluctant to upgrade to El Capitan in fear that El Capitan will end up corrupting my older files. Has anybody experienced any problems using El Capitan with FileMaker Pro 11? I would appreciate hearing about your experiences.. TIA, Lee

Does anyone know whether it is possible to print directly from Filemaker to a Dymo Labelmanger Wireless PnP (I'm not talking about the widely known LabelWriter, but the ribbon-type printer from Dymo). USB or Wifi doesn't matter that much to me. Problem though is that I can currently use it only with Dymo’s own Labeling Software, but would like to print using FMP.

In every other Mac program that I am familiar with, if one command clicks on the window title you get a hierarchical view of where that particular document lives on your computer. This does not seem to be the case in FMP12 or FMPro 14. Am I doing something wrong, or is this capability not supported in FM? Thank you!

After being able to avoid this for as long as I could, I need to run some tests of solutions I've developed on Windows. I'm a Mac guy. I'm looking at VM Fusion as the emulator but I'm extremely confused on what version of Windows I should purchase. I've seen both 32 and 64 bit versions, OEM versions, etc. This will be with FM 13 client, possibly server too down the road. Has anyone been through this recently who can offer some suggestions or guidance? Thanks in advance.

We have several iMacs running snow leapord. Each has 8gb ram. FMServer 11 is running on a windows server 2008 r2. The iMac users are using FMPro ver. 11. Each time they print, filemaker crashes when finished. If they try to print to the network printer or print to a pdf, it crashes. Any suggestions?

I am going with a mac mini, maxed at 16gb, and with four cores, either the current or the new ones, which I expect to have pci ssds (which is no big deal if you'll be running your db from ram anyway), for a 50 strong company with 1-6 concurrent connections, for the time being. I ‘ll have for starters about 2-3 go clients, 5 desktop clients, and the rest will be webdirect. On average I would expect 3 people to be inputting at any time and about another 3 browsing the db. Are there any red flags that I should be aware of?

Not sure if this belongs here, but no other forum seems to fit either. We have a file that is really very simple (three tables, one relationship). One of three persons can work on this file. We have agreed that whenever one of us makes any changes to the file, they will immediately email the modified copy to the other two persons. I know there are better solutions to this, but we don't want to get into that just now. Here's the problem: Whenever one of us sends the file to the other two it comes through as document in unknown format in binary, even though the file has an .fmp extension. When downloaded, the file appears on the receiving computers with no icon. Dou…

Attached is a screen shot of my attempt to save a file to a folder.  Sometimes, FM identifies that I'm working in a folder on my desktop (eventually) and, when this box opens, it lists that folder down below so I can just select it.  But sometimes no matter what I do, I cannot get it to save the file where I want it.  I end up having to save it to my desktop and then moving it.  Situation:  I have a folder on my desktop with an FM file in it.  I double-click to open the FM file and then select Save As.  But it will not show that folder for me to specify saving a copy into the same folder on my desktop.  If I select Desktop, it wants to save it there.  …

I didn't see a Forum called "Dumb Questions", so since Mange Databases is related to Relationships I thought I would ask here. I can't figure out why my new installation of FileMaker Pro 11 Advanced will not recognize the Shift-CMD-D keystroke to manage databases. It does nothing. I have gone into the OSX keyboard preference panel and went through all of the sections for keyboard shortcuts, including all the services, and I don't see this duplicated in any active config, yet it still does nothing when pressed in FileMaker regardless of mode I am in. Anyone else see this and have a solution? Since you use this frequently it would be nice to have it working. …

Our employees carry around HID branded proximity cards for physical access to the building, and I'd like to allow employees to login to my FileMaker solution with these cards instead of typing in their username and password all the time. This would speed things up and encourage people to carry their cards with them. I've been told that the OMNIKEY 5325 CL is the device best suited for this, and they advertise Mac OS X compatibility, but I wanted to hear from fellow FileMaker users if this is a feasible idea or not. I'm envisioning something akin to how a magnetic card (like a credit card or driver's license) is read in by a card swiper via keyboard wedge simulatio…

I am working on a solution with a very large relationship graph. The last 1/8 of the graph only shows the TOG connectors and none of it is editable. I have tried two things. 1. increased memory up to 256 - but no changes 2. accessed file remotely in 2 different ways. a/ VNC direct to client server (Mac Mini - 2G ram - fm Memory set to 256) b/ on macbook pro (4gig ram - FM memory set to 256k), via filemaker network In both cases, exact same result. At the breaking point, just one scroll arrow click downward and TOG's lose text and editablity. I've got a user who gets a "permission denied" message when trying to open a DB, the error refers to a related DB of the one being opened. When I try to modify a layout with FMPA 11.0v2 on my iMac (3.06Ghz, Intel Core Duo,4GB memory 1067MHz Ram, OSX 10.6.4) scrolling and mouse movements result in a fractured display as though an error occurs in the refresh rate. In a small network with a new 22.5" iMac w/4GB serving FM 9 to 2 older iMacs w/2GB running 8.5 for a file about 50MB with 13 tables and the main "data" table having 64 fields and 79K records to date. All the scripts and relationships seem to be running fine but there seems to be an unusual data corruption issue -- sometimes a portion of the 79K records disappear while not crashing the computer or the file -- the file has been "recovered" using FM 11, compacted, copied to another disk and back and the processed repeated, Disk Utilities/Permission run, etc.; early on, about two weeks ago there was a repair via "recover" that was assumed to address the oddity, but the i…

I guess that's the right subject description. I'm going to be needing to buy a Mac Pro to run a specific solution. There won't be that many users hitting on it, but the table sizes are in the millions of records. Most of the tables/fields are fully indexed. So, the question is, how much is too much? Is there such a thing as too much RAM? Do I need the fastest processor speed? Or is hard drive access speed more important? Right now the solution is about 20 GB. It shouldn't grow to more than 40 GB. Thanks Christopher

Hi there, I have an interesting problem with a container field which is a calculation (result is container) and it references a text field, which then has a file path entered. I am connected to the file server via NFS (this cannot be changed). The permissions on the remote directory are read and write. The text field = imagemac:/directoryName/fileName However all I see in the container field is "The file cannot be found: Test.jpg" The way the remote directories have been mounted, using NFS, does not seem to put a volume name under directory /Volumes. So it appears as if the directory is on the local machine. I've come across a similar post …

Hello All. I have a strange problem. First of all, I am working on a Mac and believe that the problem might have come from switching between "Spaces," which I have always had enabled. Here's the problem: I was editing a very long calculation in FMP, that had not been saved. I switched to another application in another "space" for a bit, came back to FMP and could not locate the "Specify Calculation" window anymore. I could see the DB in the background locked under the"Manage Database" window. I cannot click on or select anything. Since I did not close the "Specify Calculation" window, FMP has become inactive. One solution is to click ESC and disc…

I'm sure this is incredibly self-evident and I apologize in advance. I'm about to add a second Mac to my home office and I want to use both machines to share the seven tables comprising my dBase. I'm running FM10.3 on Mac 10.5.7 and have a copy of FM11. I'm not sure I want to upgrade; I'm not convinced I'm missing ANYTHING in FM that I need. Regardless, I remain confused about: 1) do I need two copies of FM? 2) if so, do they have to be the same version - i.e., could I run 11 on the new [faster] machine and 10.3 on the old? I want the old machine to have read/write capabilities. I can't find anything on FM's site and everything I've seen so far …

Hi all, I have a Mac Mini running a copy of Filemaker Pro Advanced 9.0.3, sharing my database through filemaker networking to several other OSX laptops on a local network. We have a network of 6 FMP9 users, one on a Mac mini sharing files. A Powerbook had a drive fail and it was replaced with a new iMac running Snow Leopard. Installing FMP 9v3 and it hung during activation (verified we were providing the right serial number by first checking everyone else prior to assigning the correct one). Force quit and tried again and it claimed to successfully activate this time and all seemed good, but it will not show any of the files being shared by the mini. I am thinking that the activation didn't work well. Do I need to contact FMP or can I try anything to rectify this situation?

Our company (in the IT department) has been testing FileMaker Pro 10 and FileMaker Pro 10 Advanced running on Max OS X 10.6 for several months with great success. We have 2 separate/isolated networks running the same files (different data) and we are experiencing reproducible connection loss on both networks when exiting a field on the guest computer (FM6, Mac OS 10.4.11) with a file hosted by FM6 on Mac OS 10.5.6 on the main computer. Each network consists of one host and one guest only. There are a number of fields on the layout but the largest field containing the bulk of the data (the body of a letter) is related to the crashing of FM6 on the guest if the user accidentally moves out of or away from the field by tabbing/clicking or even moves to scroll the window or click into another field or button. This doesn't look like the most active forum, but hopefully someone will share their experience. I run an FM 10v3 database on a 2.4GHz dual core late 2008 MacBook. It runs a fairly complex looping script nightly for data acquisition involving screen scraping from an HTML source. The entire script usually takes 4.5 hours to run. After upgrading from Leopard to Snow Leopard, acquisition time has dropped to 3 hours. I know that Snow Leopard optimizes use of the dual core, but I fear this speed increase is too good to be true. I am worried that weeks from now I will find that I am missing data. Has anyone out there had a similar experience or care to comment? Than…

I have FM 9 Advanced, 1 copy. I have two users, 2nd user is currently using only IWP (because that's what I know how to do). Problem: user #2 needs to print and printing from the browser is insufficient. I do not need the data on a server; indeed, it's preferable at this time to keep the file stored on user #1's (my) computer. Question: what is the cheapest way to get user #2 to be able to print straight from FM? Both computers are Mac OS X, one Tiger one Leopard.

Hi, Remote: Mac OSX 10.4 client VPN on DSL. FMPro 8.5 Office: Netopia 4622 on T1 FMPro Advanced 8.5 I'm in the early stages of testing mobile VPN connections to FMPro Server hosted at the office. My solution uses the spearation model with all graphics and layouts stored locally on the client. I am seeing very slow performace. For example, a simple 'sort by last name' on 1000 records takes about 500 seconds, ie. only 2 records are sorted each second. I had expected to see faster performance. Am I being unrealistic or is there a technical reason for the slow speeds? Do things speed up on the client with higher cache settings? Is there any pe…

Hello, I'm having an issue with some users trying to access a file and the machine will hang. I can create a new account on the same machine and the file will open under the new account. Go to another users mac and the file opens. There are two files this is an issue with. The machines have had permissions fixed and disk warrior run on them, but that doesn't seem to help. The issue isn't limited to 10.4/10.5 or PPC/Intel. The issue has happened on any combination of machine type/OS. Has anyone else run across this issue, and and if so, were you able to resolve it? Thanks, John

I have a host programme (several databases) being accessed remotely at home. Both ends use ADSL 2+ and connected through routers but even so, it is incredibly slow to view at home and often drops out for no apparent reason (usually when not being used continually). Is there anything I can do other than reduce the file sizes (two of the databases are around 50-80Mb)? They are all relationally linked in multiple ways. Thanks Martins

Hi we are looking to update our ageing server (G4 Xserve) to a new one. I was hoping might get some recommendations for hardware. Proposed useage; 1) Backup asides, looking to run a two disk server with apps and system on one and data on other. 2) data disk will have a lot of office type software plus largish CAD file. We also use filemaker for numerous uses and may have 6 or 10 hosted at any time but none of them are what you might call massive on an enterprise scale but heavily utilise calculations and scripts and can reference large numbers of photos. I guess we can always add another disk later if the databases start to impact on the saving and loading o…

Looking for advice. We are in the final planning stages for launching our FM solution which has both an important IWP component and locally attached FM users. We are running FM Server 8 Advanced and are pleased with the IWP response to most challenges. I have two idle Windows Servers with plenty of memory of which I would dedicate one. I can submit for budget approval for a MAC server running OS X. Does anyone feel there is a benefit to one platform over the other? I am partial to MAC but need the justification for the budget approval.

i found an anoying issue with MacOS X 10.5 and FileMaker Pro 6.0v4: printing for instance an OCR-B invoice directly to the printer doesn't work. i have to do a pdf, then print that pdf. this is quite annoying... i tried with two instances of OCR-B. one of which was bought on the linotype. the other one was the "OCR-B New Abacus" font. Any hint on this one?

Hi everybody I know this has nothing to do with FM but I am a bit stuck and I need some help from the mac users. What I want is that on startup I get a link established to a shared folder on a windows server. I can do this manually but I do not know how to get it to happen automatically on startup. It already does this for another folder on the same machine but I cannot for the life of me work out how you do it. The mac help files are very frustrating!! Thanks in advance peeps Phil

I am in the transition period from PPC to Intel, and installation of Aperture. My main box is an Apple G5 DP running OSX 10.3.9 and I have the upgrade software to go to OS 10.4+ but have not yet installed it. I also have a recent Intel MacBook Pro running 10.4.9. Problem I'm experiencing is not unusual. If I run the current OS I cant run Aperture in the G5. If I upgrade the OS I suspect I will 'leave behind' some of the other software I rely on. My query is about one main piece of software I use - Filemaker Pro 5.5 which runs a database I created handling my analog image collection, client info, deliveries and invoices, accounts etc. It works cleanly and quickly…

I'm not sure where to put this question so I will start here. I have an Intel based IMAC running Tiger OSX. I bought the machine to evaluate some windows based software for my cabinetshop. I am planning to toggle between the two platforms with a software called Parallels. I still need to get windows installed to make this happen. I have been advised to install XP rather than Vista. When I go to Amazon to buy XP I am offered the Professional Version and the Home version. There is no discussion about differences between the two. Can anybody recommend what I should use for software to make this transition easy to understand and maintain? T…

I've built a solution that makes use of the Get( DesktopPath ) function. For all of the machines running the system except one, this works fine. This is happening on Macs across the board. For those machines under which this is working, the function returns something like this: /Aslan/Users/chuck/Desktop/ However, on one machine, and only on this one, it returns something like this: /chuck/Desktop/ Has anyone else experienced this kind of behavior? Can anyone offer an explanation as to its possible origin? One difference that it is not due to is that one runs under an Admin account and the other does not. I tested this under both types of acc…

I'm getting the same wheel when I start my computer then a message and a window that says "Where is Filemaker" I then need to locate FM9 in a list of applications each time I start my computer. I've tried to save the files as mentioned above (as compressed) them open in FM9 but it still does the same routine when I start my computer again. I'm thinking this may be cause because I purchased the FM9 Advances upgrade (coming from full install of FM 8.5 Advanced). This is really frustrating as it seems I need to quit FM 8.5, then find FM9 in the applications list (from the pop up) then I can get into FM9. I was thinking of uninstalling FM9, then trying to re …

We are developing a solution to run in a mixed platform environment. The primary development is being done on Windows boxes running FMP 8.5 advanced. Layouts designed on these machines using Helvetica (9pt) plain font look fine on the PC, but are not as clear on the Mac (mostly Mini Macs with non Apple displays). They also look gray rather than the black text color selected. We have tried an Apple display and it looks better, but not as crisp as the PC. Note: the same layout (with same font, etc.)in FMP 6 looks fine on the Mac. Any suggestions?

I would like to activate a script when the bar code scanner's trigger is pulled. Currently I can move from field to field with a trigger pull using tab order, but would like to activate a script on a trigger pull and go from field to field using scripts to check each entry rather than having to press enter to activate a script. Using Symbol LS 2208 bar code scanner. Thanks Steve

Hi folks, first post and I'm hoping in in or near the right forum to post this. I have Filemaker 7 Server running on a Win 2k server. All of my windows and mac computers can see all the files available when using the "open remote" feature, except for one. A powerbook G4 that worked fine until about 3 weeks ago, now can't see any files listed on the server when using the open remote feature. I've tried to match settings, network settings etc. looking at the other couple of macs we have on the network, but I can't see any differences. We've removed preferences and even re-installed FMP on the mac to no avail. Does anyone have any suggestions? Thanks for any help! …

Hi I have a file (USENGMED.MPR) that I have not been able to delete. It's related to an old system that I updated. I move it to the trash but when I try to empty I get the msg "The operation cannot be completed because the item USENGMED.MPR is in use". FMP is not running anywhere, and restarting the computer does not resolve the issue. I've checked my startup on login items and nothing seems to be related to it. The file is not locked and I have full permissions for it. I know this kind of smacks of an OS thing, but as it's an FM file... TIA for any help

Hi all, I'm not sure if this is the right forum for this so please tell me if it is not. Anyway, our school district runs a filemaker database for student attendance. All of the schools connect to the district office over high speed (6Mbps) leased lines. A G5 xserve hosts Filemaker 8 Server and all the clients are Filemaker 8. The problem is that 2-8 times per day the clients get disconnected from the Students database. Sometimes they get an error messgae stating they have been disconnected. (connection with server has closed). Other times the database just closes with no warning. (none of the users have an Idle time set). Users at the district office rarely if ever …

I am looking for a recommendation for a new system for our filemaker server. We have about 30 different databases, some small, some big, that all interact with each other. The application is in constant use throughout the day, and it manages our entire calendar system, client requests, and many other things. There are usually about 10 clients logged onto the system. A lot of things we do are rather quick, but anytime I change add a field, or change a table occurance relation, I feel the "hang" of the system working. Also, we have a few scripts that take way too long, and although the are doing some complex calculations with appointment times and other information, …

Does anyone have real-world experience comparing a single vs dual processor chip (either PPC or Intel) for running filemaker server 8? I'm thinking of setting up a cheap server using an Intel Mac Mini, and wondering if the $200 or so price jump for the Duo is going to show much real-world performance gains. Am I better off spending $200 on 2 gigs of ram instead and getting the Core Solo?

We have two Macs sharing peer to peer; whenever the client is closed down the file references are lost resulting in 'file can't be found' when buttons pointing to the host dbase are clicked. Both computers have fixed IP addresses; linked over an ethernet LAN. I have to either find the file myself or redefine the file reference in each script. I hadn't experienced this issue before changing to Dev7, maybe I am misunderstanding something but it drives me nuts.....

I've experienced this problem in FM 7 Advanced and FM 8 Advanced. While creating a solution I'm often going in/out of layout/browse mode and I'm frequently opening the Define Database window. I use keyboard commands to switch views and windows. After a few times of accessing different views or the define DB dialog window FileMaker starts to having issues redrawing any screen. Sometimes the window will stay open but just be blank minimizing then open the window back up fixes it until the next time I change something. Other times it will just disappear in the Window menu it shows that its open but if I select it nothing happens. I have to double click on the fi…

In OS 9 I was able to, using Apple's "Remote Access," dial from one Mac to another through a telephone connection, connect remotely and access my FileMaker database through "Remote Host." I just upgraded to OS 10 Panther and FileMaker 8. I am now unable to find a way for the host Mac to "answer" the phone and provide me access to the network for my remote Mac. I have tried Timbuktu, but while it allows me to connect one Mac to the other, it does not provide network access. I know it is old fashioned to want to connect through a telephone connection, but does anyone have a solution for this problem? TIA

I am experiencing problems with FileMaker user interface performance on Mac OS 10.4.2. Things seem normal when FileMaker starts up, but soon the UI slows to a crawl, with FileMaker unable to keep up with even very slow typing and double clicks not recognized. Restarting FileMaker solves the problem temporarily. Other apps can be slow also, but FileMaker is much, much worse. Anyone else having this problem? Any suggestions?

I created a FMP6 runtime in 10.4 it worked fine. I created a zipped file of the solution and put it on my iDisk to finish it off in the office. When I unzipped the file on 10.3 at the office, all of the icons are generic. The main file (the one that is usually of type 'Application' is also generic. Then I try to open it, it asks what application do I want to use to open the document. It is supposed to be the application it opens itself. Pointing it to FMD didn't work either. I can open the database file in FMD fine. Anyone else seen this type of behavior? Is there a documented (or undocumented) problem zipping run times in 10.4? or am I just crazy? …

I have a user on an iBook G4 who needs to open the files with a password. Pressing the Option key when opening the files is not prompting her for a password. It just opens the files with the general user password and rights. It appears that the Option key works in other programs such as Photoshop and Illustrator but not FileMaker. Unfortunately, the keyboard on the iBook only has one Option key. Has anyone ever experienced anything like this before? Any suggestions would be appreciated! Cindy P.S. I generally don't use a Mac so my knowledge with them is very limited!

Has anyone ever come across this problem which is afflicting me on FPro 7 using Apple OSX 10.3.9? - If I want to copy a piece of text, for instance the word'Problem' I highlight the exact word 'Problem' then do 'Apple Copy'. - For some reason, instead of picking up the word 'Problem' what I actually pick up is 'roblem '. In other words there's a misalignment between what I see my cursor doing on screen and what it is actually doing. - It's only a problem in Filemaker, not in other applications. - I'me viewing Filemaker at 100% size. Any advice gratefully received!

I have a LAN with four Macintoshes connected to a switch (not a router) and am seeing very erratic behavior. I set up a test DB on each machine and set them to multiuser. None of the Macs see all three other hosts. They all either see only one, or none at all. One of them can see two. Two of the Macs are running 10.2.x and two are running 10.3.x. I'm thinking that the problem may be because we are using a switch and not a router. It is like they are on a different subnet or something. Any advise is highly appreciated.

I use FMPro 5.5 and will be upgrading to Tiger any day now. I was wondering if anyone can tell me if FMPro 5.5 databases of this type will work with Tiger or whether I will have to redo it in FMPro 7. It is a one machine database with no server or web access involved. I have FMPro 7, but my database was too complex to transfer from 5.5 to 7 without lots of reprogramming, so I've not bothered. However, if I can no longer run it with Tiger, then I'll have to bite the bullet and redo the database from scratch. Thanks, Robert
