I have a client with a machine running both FileMaker Pro Advanced 10 and 11 on Win XP SP2. Both have been running fine on the machine for months but all of a sudden neither will successfully launch. Both applications exit after the FileMaker splash screen. We've tried uninstalling and then reinstalling FMPA 11 (which appears to be a successful installation), rebooting the machine, etc. but the problem persists. Anyone have any ideas? I've never seen this behavior before. I didn't know where to post this. Sorry if it's in the wrong section. Thanks in advance! -Kent

Hi, I need to do remote synchronization for me databases between the filemaker server and my database in my home computers and laptops. It is going to be one way from server to other computers should there be any update in the server. I am just wondering how I should do it. Do I need to setup username and password if there is an update? And do I use the date and time to determine which recrods needs to be update? And how I should update new records? Many Thanks. KC

I have a client running FMP 9 on windows 7 on a local network. All machines could see the server with the server appearing in local host. Now for some reason the server can not be seen with local host or favourite host....but on one machines you can open the hosted file using "open recent" but try the same on one of the other machines and it says the file could not be found. Windows firewall is off on the client machines with no other security software managing the firewall. I have replaced the server.pem file and this to yielded no result. I can see the hosted file from out side their local network across the internet but I am using FMPA 11 on a vista machine. Is t…

I run a MS Terminal Server farm that 1000 users connect to. Recently I migrated all users to a Windows 2008 Server farm with FileMaker Pro 11. Now each time a new user creates a profile on the terminal server and opens FileMaker it asks do you want to update to v2. Is there anyway to globally turn this setting off for any user that connects? Any help would be great.

I am working on a solution with a very large relationship graph. The last 1/8 of the graph only shows the TOG connectors and none of it is editable. I have tried two things. 1. increased memory up to 256 - but no changes 2. accessed file remotely in 2 different ways. a/ VNC direct to client server (Mac Mini - 2G ram - fm Memory set to 256) b/ on macbook pro (4gig ram - FM memory set to 256k), via filemaker network In both cases, exact same result. At the breaking point, just one scroll arrow click downward and TOG's lose text and editablity. (see attachment) I also have gone through the entire graph and minimize all TOG's which should have freed …

I installed FileMaker 9.0 on my new laptop that has Win 7 Pro 64 bit. Everything seemed to load correctly but when I start FM I get an error message that says make sure you're not behind a firewall blocking port 5003. I uninstalled my MacAfee and opened inbound and outbound ports 5000-5010 for TCP and UDP in Windows firewall but still get the same message. Does anyone have a fix?

Years ago we wrote a vb script to shut down a client hosted peer to peer file in order to allow backup software to backup. Has anyone incorporated a good way to host a client and yet back it up while it remains open. Server does this wonderfully but in non server environments where a client has limited funds and only a handful of users i wondered if third party backup software will work or if inherent OS backup ignore file in use? thx

Hello, I work at home using Windows XP Pro and often have to update a Filemaker solution on a remote Apple computer running OS X. The solution is too complex (or poorly optimised) to make remotely logging into the Filemaker solution itself usable. Apple Remote Desktop server costs $300, a service I get free when doing similar on a remote Windows machine. As alternatives I have tried 'TeamViewer' and, a while back, various free VNC tools. Unfortunately, none of these are Filemaker 'intelligent' as RDC to Apple RDC. They can't transfer FM content in the clipboard. TeamViewer, while powerful and free, does not even translate the control key to the Apple key making …

I've got a user who gets a "permission denied" message when trying to open a DB, the error refers to a related DB of the one being opened. I can access his account from my Mac, and from a fresh user account on his Mac, suggesting there is something amiss in his home folder. So I tried deleting any permissions and cache files I could find relating to FMP. I also tried deleting his login keychain. I've run out of ideas, does anyone have any suggestions? Thanks.

We are currently building a POS system using Filemaker Pro 11. We have a local printer (to be used for regular 8.5 x 11 reports and letters) and a network receipt printer for purchases. Our problem is that any letter-size documents get printed out to the local printer with the document specs for the receipt printer - with the result that we are losing the right half of all the 8.5 x 11 documents! How do we fix this? Nothing we have done so far changes the printer setup instructions getting sent to our local printer. We did initially find that the FM layouts had been mysteriously changed from a right margin of 18 to 397 px (eh?!! Why did FM change this on its own??) N…

When I try to modify a layout with FMPA 11.0v2 on my iMac (3.06Ghz, Intel Core Duo,4GB memory 1067MHz Ram, OSX 10.6.4) scrolling and mouse movements result in a fractured display as though an error occurs in the refresh rate. (See attached files.) In addition, if I make any changes to the solution on a Macbook using FMPA 10 and OSX v 10.4.11 then use the solution on the iMac, the text colour changes from black (0,0,0) to dark gray (51,51,0) making it less legible when shared on the Macbook. I have had to return the text colour to black now at least 5 times. My solution is installed in a department that currently uses FMP 9 and I have not been confident to upgrade their …

A client of mine is using a program that was made with Filemaker Pro 6 Runtime. They want to be able to share their database across their network. I downloaded Filemaker Pro 7 and found it very easy to use... I had no problem sharing the 'installed templates' after installing on their network. However, when I converted the database made from the FMP 6 it won't let me share it with any users on the network... and when I try to use the 'open remote' function the file obviously isn't there because I can't share it. The FMP 6 multi file database seemed to convert properly.... it runs the script to open the other files and it seems to function just fine... but I am stuck …

I set my application to run over a 2-machine network. For the first 6 month, everything was fine but I had to reinstall XP due to others issues. Before clearing my HD, I deactivated FM Pro 9 on the server only. Then I reinstalled XP and reactivation went through successfully. I reinstalled my application but at launching FM Pro keeps coming with this message: FileMaker cannot share the files because another user already shares them with FileMaker Pro on this machine. I am using FMP 11 Advanced and need to buy a new computer. I'm looking at Windows 7 64-bit OS but see that Filemaker doesn't officially support it: http://help.filemaker.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/5587/kw/windows%207%2064-bit On the other hand, Microsoft alleges compatibility: http://www.microsoft.com/windows/compatibility/windows-7/en-us/Details.aspx?type=Software&p=Filemaker%20Pro&v=FileMaker%2c%20Inc.&uid=11&l=en&pf=0π=3&s=FileMaker%20Pro&os=64-bit I'm just wondering if anyone is using Filemaker on a Windows 64-bit OS and with what results. In a small network with a new 22.5" iMac w/4GB serving FM 9 to 2 older iMacs w/2GB running 8.5 for a file about 50MB with 13 tables and the main "data" table having 64 fields and 79K records to date. All the scripts and relationships seem to be running fine but there seems to be an unusual data corruption issue -- sometimes a portion of the 79K records disappear while not crashing the computer or the file -- the file has been "recovered" using FM 11, compacted, copied to another disk and back and the processed repeated, Disk Utilities/Permission run, etc.; early on, about two weeks ago there was a repair via "recover" that was assumed to address the oddity, but the i…

I guess that's the right subject description. I'm going to be needing to buy a Mac Pro to run a specific solution. There won't be that many users hitting on it, but the table sizes are in the millions of records. Most of the tables/fields are fully indexed. So, the question is, how much is too much? Is there such a thing as too much RAM? Do I need the fastest processor speed? Or is hard drive access speed more important? Right now the solution is about 20 GB. It shouldn't grow to more than 40 GB. Thanks Christopher

Hi there, I have an interesting problem with a container field which is a calculation (result is container) and it references a text field, which then has a file path entered. I am connected to the file server via NFS (this cannot be changed). The permissions on the remote directory are read and write. The text field = imagemac:/directoryName/fileName However all I see in the container field is "The file cannot be found: Test.jpg" The way the remote directories have been mounted, using NFS, does not seem to put a volume name under directory /Volumes. So it appears as if the directory is on the local machine. I've come across a similar post …

Hi all! I am new to this forum as I am working with FileMaker for the first time and one of my users is having an issue. He states that about a month ago, Filemaker started acting funny (ie: freezing, crashing). The program is locking up, but only when he tries opening with other programs open (ie: Internet Explorer, Outlook). At that point, he either has to close in Task Manager or if it is reallly freezing, log off, then log back on. I checked his computer for malware, could not find anything out of ordinary. As I said, this issue only happens when he tries to open other programs when using FMP, or vice versa. Alone, it is fine. Does anyone know of any issues su…

Hello All. I have a strange problem. First of all, I am working on a Mac and believe that the problem might have come from switching between "Spaces," which I have always had enabled. Here's the problem: I was editing a very long calculation in FMP, that had not been saved. I switched to another application in another "space" for a bit, came back to FMP and could not locate the "Specify Calculation" window anymore. I could see the DB in the background locked under the"Manage Database" window. I cannot click on or select anything. Since I did not close the "Specify Calculation" window, FMP has become inactive. One solution is to click ESC and disc…

I do not use Filemaker often but I am having a particular problem that I have not found a solution to yet. When I open Filemaker 6.0v4 on a Windows XP Pro SP 3 computer it shows the FM splash screen, all the fonts load, then TCP/IP loads and the status in the lower right corner says 'Successfully loaded', however at that point FM freezes and I have to shut it down using the Close option by right-clicking the minimized window at the bottom of the screen and I get a message that FM has stopped responding. I have uninstalled and reinstalled the program, but that has not corrected the problem. Has anyone run into this situation in the past?

Can anyone help... I am running Filemaker Pro V10 on a laptop running Windows XP. Filemaker used to work fine, but now as soonb as I try to load it, I get the "Filemaker must close" message. I'm sure this is incredibly self-evident and I apologize in advance. I'm about to add a second Mac to my home office and I want to use both machines to share the seven tables comprising my dBase. I'm running FM10.3 on Mac 10.5.7 and have a copy of FM11. I'm not sure I want to upgrade; I'm not convinced I'm missing ANYTHING in FM that I need. Regardless, I remain confused about: 1) do I need two copies of FM? 2) if so, do they have to be the same version - i.e., could I run 11 on the new [faster] machine and 10.3 on the old? I want the old machine to have read/write capabilities. I can't find anything on FM's site and everything I've seen so far …

We have a network of 6 FMP9 users, one on a Mac mini sharing files. A Powerbook had a drive fail and it was replaced with a new iMac running Snow Leopard. Installing FMP 9v3 and it hung during activation (verified we were providing the right serial number by first checking everyone else prior to assigning the correct one). Force quit and tried again and it claimed to successfully activate this time and all seemed good, but it will not show any of the files being shared by the mini. I am thinking that the activation didn't work well. Do I need to contact FMP or can I try anything to rectify this situation?

Hello, I currently support an offsite production twice a year that uses File Maker Pro Server 8.5 to host a database that contains information needed to support the production. Hi all... I wasn't quite sure where to put this question, so here it is. My database is hosted by a hosting company. I use the separation model, where most of the layouts and scripts are in a local file on each users' computer, and the data is online. It's been running fine for about a year and a half. Over the past month or two, my users have been getting sporadic hangs. For about 5-10 minutes, all users in all locations get the spinning beachball/colorwheel. They generally don't lose connection. Unless they force quit (argh!), it comes back to life after 5-10 minutes and continues operating as normal. I really need to get to the bottom of this. Any i…

We have 2 separate/isolated networks running the same files (different data) and we are experiencing reproducible connection loss on both networks when exiting a field on the guest computer (FM6, Mac OS 10.4.11) with a file hosted by FM6 on Mac OS 10.5.6 on the main computer. Each network consists of one host and one guest only. There are a number of fields on the layout but the largest field containing the bulk of the data (the body of a letter) is related to the crashing of FM6 on the guest if the user accidentally moves out of or away from the field by tabbing/clicking or even moves to scroll the window or click into another field or button. HELP! I have rebuilt one PC on the network and it now endlessly loops on client-side processing in some reports. No other PC has this problem so it is obviouly specific to the PC. I have re-installed FileMaker (10 Adv), MDAC, and updated all the drivers for the OS. When generating a report that retrieves data and does the client side processing it keeps displaying "records to sort: 0" and loops forever. Has anyone heard of such a problem, or have a solution? This doesn't look like the most active forum, but hopefully someone will share their experience. I run an FM 10v3 database on a 2.4GHz dual core late 2008 MacBook. It runs a fairly complex looping script nightly for data acquisition involving screen scraping from an HTML source. The entire script usually takes 4.5 hours to run. After upgrading from Leopard to Snow Leopard, acquisition time has dropped to 3 hours. I know that Snow Leopard optimizes use of the dual core, but I fear this speed increase is too good to be true. I am worried that weeks from now I will find that I am missing data. Has anyone out there had a similar experience or care to comment? Than…

Just curious, I have dealt with Databases in the past that don't react too well when using a client offsite through a VPN connection. Something about latency and packet drops causing corruption. Does Filemaker suffer from this? I want to have a Central Filemaker Server, access via VPN, then using the "open remote" access the database. Is this risky? Or does the fmnet protocol over a vpn connection work well in preventing corruption?

We are preparing to link to an existing Access Db. FileMaker is the owner of the data, and at this point it will be a read-only (Access reading the FileMaker data) link. Is there anything we need to be aware of? Are there any directions or how-tos that would help walk us through the process, hopefully painlessly? thanks, innodes

I host a FM solution on my office iMac using FMP 10 Advanced. One of the tables (Media) contains a container field (Doc). I created several records in that table, and have inserted quicktime movies (Movie1.mov, Movie2.mov) into these. I'm able to view/play them. But users connecting to my solution on our Filemaker network, when opening these records, see only the error message "can't find movie1.mov." Can you tell me what I'm doing wrong? TIA! Jim Recht

Hello, I'm trying to troubleshoot an FM database on a bot that imports FM data from a Filemaker Server to various mySQL tables. The issue is the FM bot loses communication with the host occasionally and I'm not sure why> It's not being disconnected from the host either. I was going through the console log and found a couple of items, with the first being an error related to directory services: 2009-04-15 19:58:23 PDT - T[0xB0081000] - Network transition occurred. 2009-04-15 19:59:15 PDT - T[0xB0081000] - Network transition occurred. 2009-04-15 19:59:17 PDT - T[0xB0081000] - Network transition occurred. 2009-04-15 19:59:17 PDT - T[0xB0081000] - Network…

Don't know if I'm in the right place here but I was wondering the following. During the implementation of a small database yesterday, I met some wise *ss claiming that Filemaker sucks because it uses outdated ODBC network drivers... So my question, how does Filemaker networking work. Does it use it's own technique/protocol, does it indeed use ODBC or is it based of something else... Info welcome.

I'm not sure where this question belongs, actually. I have two monitors now on my machine and I want to have one monitor with application A open and then create a second application on monitor B and go back and forth copying stuff, etc. However, it seems that every time I try to open the second FM program it just goes to the original one and won't open a second instance. Any ideas? I could open MS applications twice, one on each screen, but FM doesn't work. Thanks Mike

Hope this is in the right place. I would like to know what FM server version I need to get or which one is recommended for a small office network. Basically a server with 7 computers. I would need to have FM on all 7 computer plus server. Is there a server package that will cover all that or would I have to get FM server edition plus 7 separate licenses? Thank you.,

Hi - I am very new to this so please be gently with me! I have designed a very basic database interface and although I have followed a tutorial, I cannot seem to get the rolodex to work. The suggested script is as follows: Set capture error Enter Find mode Set field (Name last(Getscriptparameter)) Perform find If(GEt(lasterror-401)) Show custom dialog (no record found) Show all records End if I have then allocated the relevant letter of the alphabet to the corresponding button but when I go into browse mode, nothing happens. Can anyone help me please? Eileen

I published filemaker database on the web. However people can only view the first 20 records when they do a search. (using list mode) Is there a way I can create a script that will allow them to view the next 20 records and so on. It is a public database so using the rolodex is not an option as it will confuse users. Any help is appreciated.

We've been running FM Pro 9 on two virtual Citrix servers with no problem for a while now. We decided to upgrade them to FM Pro 10, after seeing favorable results from regular desktop users. Strange, but as soon as we installed and ran FM Pro 10 on the Citrix servers is when the problems started. When one user logs in and starts using FM, the CPU load stays at about 45 to 50 percent. Second user logs in and runs FM10, the CPU load is at 90-95%. Third and subsequent users are so slow it's unusable. When it was rolled back to FM9, then everything is hunky-dorey. From what I've been told, the only change to these servers has been the FileMaker s…

I've been surprised to find that FileMaker Pro cannot use multiple cores (e.g. dual-core or quad-core CPUs). I noticed this while testing FileMaker Pro 9 last month, and today I installed FileMaker Pro 10 Advanced, and still notice only a 50% CPU utilization. I'm using Windows XP SP3 on a dual-core 2.8GHz Intel CPU with 4GB RAM. I'm working on a project to propegate a company's inventory data (about 40,000 products) into Google AdWords keywords (about 80,000 keywords) and text ads (about 30,000 text ads, after excluding certain inventory items based on specific criteria). My current script sequence takes about 3-4 hours to run, when maxed out at 50% as shown b…

I have FM 9 Advanced, 1 copy. I have two users, 2nd user is currently using only IWP (because that's what I know how to do). Problem: user #2 needs to print and printing from the browser is insufficient. I do not need the data on a server; indeed, it's preferable at this time to keep the file stored on user #1's (my) computer. Question: what is the cheapest way to get user #2 to be able to print straight from FM? Both computers are Mac OS X, one Tiger one Leopard.

We have a custom solution built in FM 6 with installer. The solution has been installed on thousands of computers with no problem and has worked flawlessly for almost five years. Now, in the past few weeks, we have had installation problems and, so far, Windows XP Service Pack 3 seems to be the only thing that is new and changed. Has anyone else run into this and anyone have any helpful suggestions? Thanks!

Hi, Remote: Mac OSX 10.4 client VPN on DSL. FMPro 8.5 Office: Netopia 4622 on T1 FMPro Advanced 8.5 I'm in the early stages of testing mobile VPN connections to FMPro Server hosted at the office. My solution uses the spearation model with all graphics and layouts stored locally on the client. I am seeing very slow performace. For example, a simple 'sort by last name' on 1000 records takes about 500 seconds, ie. only 2 records are sorted each second. I had expected to see faster performance. Am I being unrealistic or is there a technical reason for the slow speeds? Do things speed up on the client with higher cache settings? Is there any pe…

Hi, We are deploying a multiuser solution for filemaker. 5 user pack filemkaer is setup for each winxp and vista machines. And also one of them is running on win2003 server (server machine). The problem is some machines list the server name in local hosts dialog box, but we can not see database name after selecting server. Other machine can open the file without problem (same hardware, vista both of them) Then I tried to share with IWP. IWP can list database and connect. I dont understand what the problem is. I never have this kind of problem before with filemaker. What should I do?

Hello, I'm having an issue with some users trying to access a file and the machine will hang. I can create a new account on the same machine and the file will open under the new account. Go to another users mac and the file opens. There are two files this is an issue with. The machines have had permissions fixed and disk warrior run on them, but that doesn't seem to help. The issue isn't limited to 10.4/10.5 or PPC/Intel. The issue has happened on any combination of machine type/OS. Has anyone else run across this issue, and and if so, were you able to resolve it? Thanks, John

I have a host programme (several databases) being accessed remotely at home. Both ends use ADSL 2+ and connected through routers but even so, it is incredibly slow to view at home and often drops out for no apparent reason (usually when not being used continually). Is there anything I can do other than reduce the file sizes (two of the databases are around 50-80Mb)? They are all relationally linked in multiple ways. Thanks Martins

Hi we are looking to update our ageing server (G4 Xserve) to a new one. I was hoping might get some recommendations for hardware. Proposed useage; 1) Backup asides, looking to run a two disk server with apps and system on one and data on other. 2) data disk will have a lot of office type software plus largish CAD file. We also use filemaker for numerous uses and may have 6 or 10 hosted at any time but none of them are what you might call massive on an enterprise scale but heavily utilise calculations and scripts and can reference large numbers of photos. I guess we can always add another disk later if the databases start to impact on the saving and loading o…

Looking for advice. We are in the final planning stages for launching our FM solution which has both an important IWP component and locally attached FM users. We are running FM Server 8 Advanced and are pleased with the IWP response to most challenges. I have two idle Windows Servers with plenty of memory of which I would dedicate one. I can submit for budget approval for a MAC server running OS X. Does anyone feel there is a benefit to one platform over the other? I am partial to MAC but need the justification for the budget approval.

I'm interested to know what percent of CPU cycles others are experiencing when using FileMaker Pro 9 (Client) on Vista or XP but Vista is perferred. Its connecting to FMPSA running on Windows 2003 Server We are using a unique setup with virtual machines and we are trying to figure out why FMP seems to just sit and eat up 100% of the CPU cycles when it's just open and not being used. Each virtual machine is configured as a single core 2.6 Ghz Xeon 1.5GB RAM. We gave a virtual machine 2 processors Dual Core 2.6 Ghz and it sits idle at %50 cpu usage. By contrast to the my MacPro 3.0 GHz is connected to the same server and while idle is only using 0.1% CPU …

Does anybody try putting FileMaker Pro 9 (or other version) on a Windows XP eeePC ? The specs of FileMaker Pro 9 are : * Pentium III 500MHz or higher * 256MB of RAM * CD-ROM drive * SVGA (800 x 600) or higher resolution video adapter and display The only problems are the resolution of the eeePC (800 x 480) and the use of an external CD-ROM drive. I don't think FileMaker Pro should complain about this, don't it?

I am in the transition period from PPC to Intel, and installation of Aperture. I've built a solution that makes use of the Get( DesktopPath ) function. For all of the machines running the system except one, this works fine. This is happening on Macs across the board. For those machines under which this is working, the function returns something like this: /Aslan/Users/chuck/Desktop/ However, on one machine, and only on this one, it returns something like this: /chuck/Desktop/ Has anyone else experienced this kind of behavior? Hey I'm posting in a little used corner of FM Forums. Cool. So I've got a db design client that has 9 licenses of FM 8/8.5, all on Apples, in two offices in the Southwest USA, about 60 miles apart. The highest broadband they're able to get is cable in one office, DSL in the other. I'm trying to figure out what would give them the fastest performance on their database and what the costs would be. All 9 users need to use the full version of Filemaker (no IWP). Currently the db is hosted on a 3rd party server out of Chicago, all acces via TCP/IP. Some on ethernet, others wireless. There's a lot of data getting crunched and they're impatient, the the…
