Hi all I'm aware that what I'm about to ask could potentially be quite complex. I've watched some instructional videos on how to achieve something similar, however one technique isn't compatible with the other (i.e. creating a "Tree" within a portal that can then be re-arranged with drag and drop). Here's my situation. I'm essentially trying to create an invoice through a portal. Some invoice items are "line" items only, meaning they don't need to be "nested" or be a part of a "tree". Hi guys, I have a strange problem with a value list in one of my databases. I added a value list and set it to display a list from a field of employees. It worked for a while but after closing the database and re-opening it, the drop-down value list no longer works. I then checked in File>Manage>Value Lists and my new value list has no name anymore and I cannot delete it or edit it, it is just completely bugged out! I thought I would try again and re-create the value list and set it as the drop-down, but exactly the same thing happened, it has no name and is undeletable/uneditable! I am trying to create a parts database that has many parts that are exactly the same but have different colors and sizes. Lets say that one part is a blue widget that is 4" tall. I can also buy the part in green, red and gold and all of which are 4 inches. But i can also purchase the same item and it is 5" tall with the same/Different colors. Lets say the 5" version that gold is not available. I have tried to create a relationship by creating a supplier family to try to achieve this but it is not really the answer I am looking for. . Have not been able to identify why this happens - margins change drastically, to 1.88" for both left and right margins. I can reclaim the size of the workable area by using fixed margins and resetting to desired. I would rather find out why this happen, and stop it!  Any ideas?  Â

Hi, I'm a new learner and did search the forum and web but can't find straight answers to this. I have a portal from a related table. Now I duplicate the port to make 3 single-row portals, and I want to show the first row in the first single-row portal, the 2nd row in the 2nd single-row portal, and so on... Just beginning to work with Themes, and I have a lot to learn. I created a layout with the river theme, and somehow set the background to anchor both left and right, so it expands to fit the screen. Pretty simple, right? Problem is, I cannot remember how I did this, and cannot recreate the condition on another layout.  I don't think I'm working on the right part - the background doesn't really seem to be modifiable - the anchor selectors are inactive when I pull up the inspector for the background. Hi! I have four tables which are connected as follows: A < B > C < D In the layout of table A i have a portal which is displaying the records of table B. In this portal I have also a field where I can select a record of C and another field where I can select a related record of D. The value of table D is stored in the field of table B. When I change the record in the layout of table D it doesn't affect the stored value in table B. How can it be done that a change of a record in table D will also affect the record in table B?

Anyone else having this problem? When I format the fill and/or borders on fields, they: Only show up in browse mode for the active record (none of the others) Formatting disappears completely on Preview Mode I have Alternate Row and Active Row states set to off. Hello there, I am trying to setup a notification system using slider controls that when I add a new record on my internal "notification/warnings" table it will show up on one specific user window, to show or not the slider I am using a field inside a portal, if it is set to yes it will show the notification slider, otherwise it will go to an empty slider, ok there. When I change that field on my side, how do I force the window on that other side to refresh so it pops the notification "instantly" there saying that the new record is added? Hi Guys, I know to get rid of the ugly webviewer border in Windows you have to use some css to remove it. I have found code samples which work, but only if you build the html up and display that html in the web viewer (hope I have phrased that OK) data:text/html;,<html><style>body { border:0; margin:0; ... What I can't figure out is how to remove the border if in your web viewer calculation engine, you only have a url you are pointing towards, such as https://someplace.com. In FMP 13.02 FileMaker apparently fixed the FMP URL for the desktop client, such that it could be used to make a call to the same/local/self file. So I would have a web viewer in a solution and it would use an "fmp://web.address/dbname..." URL that would reference itself, the file that was currently open. I found some references to how to do this, but for some reason things aren't working for me. Apparently, if you are on a non-mobile platform, you need to use "$" as the IP address to reference the local file. E.g. "fmp://web.address/dbname.fmp12?script=AScriptName&$var1=1234&$var2=abcd". Hello Can i use a portal to display all my clients from my table, and go to a client i choose from the portal? I use a TabControl with two tabs. On the first tab i have all the information about my clients and on the second table i have a portal wtith a list of all my clients. I can't seem to make a wide layout in vs 13. I have files made in 12 which I just extended by dragging sideways and longways. This layout needs to be wide and I used this type of layout on FM server before and it's fine on the web. What happened to the new layout section? It's kind of strange now. Anyway, I looked for the line to drag out on the screen and it won't budge. I need 2 pages wide and 2 pages long - it will never be printed. Thanks very much.

I am actualy not sure if the sliding option is the thing I need here, in this layout, in list view, it is a very wide layout as it has many fields showing, I need to have the buttons that I set on the header to stay on screen even when I move all to the way right. I tried all configurations possible in the position/autosizing and sliding but the buttons are simple stuck there where I put them. What am I missing here? I'm having trouble getting my web viewer to work properly. I have it so its supposed to show content from Content::html with html being a calculated field which is calculating from content::formatted, which i have in the edit tab control box. Basically html links to formatted and the web viewer displays the text in the formatted box in the edit tab. I'm wondering why I can't get the web viewer to work properly. Where content:html is supposed to be in the web viewer there is a question mark, not sure why that would happen. Here's a screen shot, let me know if you need more info Â

Is there a way to globally adjust the options I've set into a portal filter? I have a bunch of individual portals using initial rows 1-15+ and sometimes I need to adjust a variable to accommodate future enhancements, etc... I'd rather update 1 field and set the portal to that 1 field, so if a change is made, it will cascade the updated information to all portals using that same variable. Going back to edit all of them 1 by 1 isnt' fun. If possible, what is a good approach? Thank you!

Hi, I am familiar with the send mail script step. What I'd like to do is include the first an last name when sending an email. In that way the receiver can choose 'add to contacts' and the first and last name plus the email will be added to contacts. If you make a calc field with firstlastnamefield & " <" & emailaddressfield & ">" and copy and paste the contents of this field into the 'to' field in Mail, it will include the first and last name together with the email address. Hello,  The file I'm working on has a Custom Menu set that takes over the entire file for all users (all privileges). However, as in the attached screenshot, some menu items have been disabled. Some of these functions are critically necessary. I am aware that developers cannot disable items except through privilege sets and I have check all privilege sets. This is not the issue.  I tried overriding specific items with scripts/ duplicated FM menus and this hasn't helped either.  The FM documentation doesn't readily indicate what would cause menu items to be disabled. Hi there, I've only been using Filemaker Pro 13 for two weeks. Most of what I've written is working well but I am really stumped on a very simple problem: I have a field in my products table where the user can select a size from another table. This field shows the size name and works correctly. I then want to display related fields from the size table, so that after the user has selected a particular size, the height and width will automatically be displayed on the products layout. I have placed two instances of a repeating field on the layout, one to show all 6 repetitions, the other shows only the first repetition. Using "Hide object if.." I have the correct instance of the field showing up as required in form view, but table view only shows the one instance in any condition. Is there any way to achieve the same effect in table view?

I started building a very straightforward project with 3 entities/tables: Clients, Projects and Invoices. Clients have a 1-to-many relation to Projects Projects have a 1-to-many relation to Invoices I started entering some dummy data in the 3 tables. I populate the Products table through a pop-up menu, that selects client names (e.g. K A, K B, K C etc.)Â from a dynamically generated value list (showing the name field of the Clients table. Greets, all: I have a portal where I'd like the user to be able to sort its contents based on a radio button choice: Date or Number. With Date, the contents would sort date-descending; with Number (a number that they would enter into a number field for each record (1...2...3...etc.)) the contents would sort number-ascending. On the surface, a portal only allows one choice for sort order: ascending _or_ descending. Is there a way I can pull this off?

Is it possible to freeze a part (e.g. Header or footer) in form view as is possible in List view ? I want to be able to scroll down a rather lengthy layout on an IOS device but still keep parts of the layout in a frozen state either at the top or the bottom of the screen. The frozen part would contain fields which display summary information for the current record as well as buttons for inputting data into the current record.

I just cleaned up my report by using Merge fields, and it's all very pretty now. However I've noticed now that if I click Find, I can no longer select any of the fields. Can you not use Find with merged fields? Is there a way to create a separate layout that it switches to when using Find? Edit: Never mind. I realized I can still access it in Table view, just not in list view. Ahh, the vagaries of FMP.

I have a web viewer set up in my FM that displays FedEx tracking. Â Previously, using FM11, I was able to adjust the scroll bars to display the parts of the FedEx tracking I wanted to show on a printout. (Scroll to the right and down, to eliminate some of the FedEx header and sidebar.) Â This would allow my printout to show the ship date and the delivery date and tracking progress through the web viewer, as well as the order information fields I have above the web viewer. Hey Guys, I've got 3 filtered portals on one of my layouts with each portal showing related records based on :- Events::Status = "Drive" Events::Status = "Build" Events::Status = "Event" Now what I'd like to do is hide the portal if there are no related records that match each one of the conditions. Greetings FM community and thank you for your time  Here's a newbie question from someone who really wants to learn!  On a "sales" layout, that's associated with a "sales" table, I'd like to have a portal on the left that displays the "types" (table) of "products" (table) available. I have a table of customers, and a self join TO, MyFamilyMembers to list all customers in their family (including themselves). Related by a family ID. The TO is sorted to put them in the order that I want them to appear in the portal. The sort is by the value of the product they buy, descending. I can show each family member's 'position in the family' by placing {{RecordNumber}} on the portal. I want to use that 'position in the family' in a calculation but I don't know how to refer to it or retrieve it.

Hello, I have a portal with a date field in the format DD-mmmm-YYYY for example. 01-Jan-2015. I want to line up the right side and left side of each portal entry for this field so the text lines up perfectly. I am able to line up one side using the justification options but when I use full justification it does not work. Is there a way to line up the dates so that the spacing changes for some dates to meet the margins of the field and the text lines up on both sides? Thanks in advance

Hey and good morning from Europe! I have a problem saving javascript in global field. When I quit Filemaker, changes goes away and reverts back to old one. Is there a workaround for this? This raises question for other people who needs to run the javascript? We are using Filemaker 13.0v3 & Filemaker Server 2013 Would one solution be to save it as normal field and make a script to update the global field which triggers when user need's the script? Hi Guys, I'm writing a mail merge facility for my database. I've found the excellent custom function by nightwing which will convert mail merge text into data from my records. One of the things I need to look into is the ability to format tabular data into one of my mail merges. Has anyone created a grid in a field that holds tabular data? I know using the formatting toolbar, you can use tabstops if I was manually typing in the data but can you apply tabstops through scriptmaker? Hello there, just started learning FM trying to build a working DB to my store, one issue I am having is I dont want it to automaticaly save the record, so I've made a button to save the new record and go back to the "main" layout, so FM will pop a dialog windows asking if you want to save, cancel or go delete, what I need to change is that dialog window, it says "FileMaker Pro". Hi All! I work in a database that has several currency fields all set that way in US dollars. Maybe 1 out of 10 times I need to create a record where the currency would need to be displayed in euros, pounds, etc. Is there a way to make the fields editable so that I can ovverride the $ symbol only when I need to? Its not worth making the fields general since the majority of the time the value is $. Its also too clumsy to make a drop down box next to each field where you can select the currency symbol because there are MANY fields on the layout that display currency and its already a tightly structured layout. Any other ideas? Thanks!

Essentially, my portal needs to act as a portal on an Invoice layout, where the user can add a certain quanity of specified products to a invoice list, which is then summed at the bottom. I've noticed that some of my popovers get what appears to be a kind of loading bar at the bottom when they are opened. It appears for just about 1 second and then disappears. However, not all popovers display this. I thought it might have something to do with the client caching data that is being displayed in the popover, but even that is inconsistent. I have popovers that are displaying portals (something you would expect to have some indexing delay) and they don't get the bar. I cannot get FMP Advanced 11.0.4 to run under Yosemite. Anyone else seeing this? Here's an odd one.... I'm building a value list of data which comes from a static field in a relationship. That builds just fine and changes as I nav the parent record set. Hello When i create a layout with my database, the fields are automaticaly ready to receive any changes from the user, and i would like to know if is possible to enter on the layout only to "see" the records, and made any changes only when the user press the "edit" button. I'm using FMP advanced 13.0v1 and I was wondering if there was a way to use a web viewer to display (and interact) with html files located on my computer rather than the web. I'm sort of new to some of this but it seems that when setting a custom web address that I'm unable to just set a path to an html file located in a folder on my computer. I've tried using this as a path (/Users/ComputerName/Desktop/folder/file.html) but the page just comes up blank. I'm sure this is a super basic question and I just need to be pointed in the right direction. Any ideas?

I understand that the standard way to show all the records of table in a portal is to use a cartesian self-join, but that trick doesn't seem to let you create new records via the portal. All I could think of was joining a global field called IsTrue in a different table to a regular numeric field, also called IsTrue, in the table Child. Both fields are set to auto-enter 1. This trick sort of works, but it seems like a bit of a hack. Is there a more elegant method? Is there a way to make a popover open with a script? I see a "Close Popover" script step, but I don't see one for opening a popover. I'm trying to make a window pop up for creating a new record when someone clicks on a link in the Virtual List Sidebar Menu I've got going. Maybe I'm supposed to just use a floating window for that? I want a window where someone clicks in the menu, the window pops up, and they have to deal with it – either filling out the form, or cancelling – before they can move on with anything else. Here's a head scratcher: Â I have sprinkled in a layout text fields made into buttons; when clicked, a script either inserts or deletes an "X" into/from the field. (They're used as checkboxes since it made field styling and conditional formatting possible/easier.) I'm writing out the way I have it set up, not because it's working (it's not), but in hopes that a real-world explanation of what I'm trying to do will foster discussion. How much overhead is associated with conditionally visible objects? If I have a popover button or a slide control that is conditionally visible and the condition is such that this object is not visibly present, does the server have to evaluate for this condition anyway? If nothing is being drawn or refreshed on the screen does this add weight to the file? Put another way, if the condition is such that the object is visible, does this take longer to load than if the object was not visible?

Not sure where to ask this one, so here it is. This one is for fun - tracking lottery numbers. I've got a file that I've entered every lottery draw in the state since it started (the list is downloadable online and I was able to import it to FMP). Here's the problem. (And it's not a huge deal but since I can't figure it out, it has become a challenge). The list shows the balls for each draw in the order they were drawn, not numerical order. In other words out of 53 balls, let's say tonight they were drawn as follows: 7, 53, 24, 16, 10, 40. I have a very simple database of inspection schedules (inspector, day, time, type of inspection, etc) - with 12 layouts, all of which load almost instantly, except for 1. There's not much special about the slow layout that I can see. It contains almost the exact same info as 4 other very similiar layouts - but it takes 15 seconds or more to switch to this layout, where the others are less than a second. It does have a bit more color, and a few more buttons, but I wouldn't think that would account for such a delay. I have a layout with a drop down list. The value list it uses is just a simple custom value list with two values.  It shows a "o" in front of the value. I copy/pasted the exact same field on the layout and on the new one it appears normal/doesnt have the anomaly. (it looks like its a o or 0 in a small font, or possibly the degree sign - cant exactly tell which character it is.)  See pic to see the two fields side by side - I have absolutely no clue what is going on here. The simple fix for appearance would be just to delete the original value and use the copy/pasted field - but I'm worried that there may be something other than just an appearance thing going on.…

Am I missing something here? The auto-enter incremental serial (attached fp7) is set to validate range 1-10. Purpose is to restrict total records in the table to 10. Create 11 or 12 records - even explicitly commit between records 10, 11 and 12. Not only does it allow the record creations but the serial quits auto-entering completely. This behaviour is replicated in 11, 12 and 13 on Mac OSX 10.9. I realise my implementation may seem weird but regardless, am I the only one who finds this behaviour unexpected? I recently upgraded from Filemaker 11 Advanced, to Filemaker 13 (basic). Now when I create a database, or “Save As”, the new database has a blank icon, like a text file. This means I can’t tell my FM databases from my text source files. I have read various solutions online, and even done something in Terminal. Nothing is working. Does anybody have any suggestions? I have had no response from Filemaker Support.

I have been reading (and re-reading) a Performance Guide created by the people at Filemaker. This guide discusses an approach whereby the developer creates a series of blank layouts for each of the primary tables. A script is triggered when a user first logs in that loops through the layouts and eliminates the found sets in each table. (I wasn't exactly sure where to post this but since it has to do more with appearances than anything else, I hope I chose the correct forum; if not, my apologies.) I have a calc field that's a record counter for portal records, e.g., "1 / 9". In my style sheet for the solution, field labels that have scripts tied to their respective field have a dotted underline so users can see that there's a something special about that field label. The problem is, fields are static in length but the record counter can vary its width based on the number of records: 1 / 9 is markedly shorter than say, 138 / 385. Filemaker presented this message (names changed): "John Doe (Sally Smith)" is modifying this record. You cannot use this record until "John Doe (Sally Smith)" is finished. I understand that this is about record locking. My question is why are there 2 names? This is on a Windows OS 8 system and one of these users may have been accessing the file over a terminal server. Is there any advantage (from a caching standpoint) to making a background image part of a custom theme element compared to repeatedly assigning the same image to multiple layout elements? Hi all I've just had this request come through. I'm quite sure this is something that is beyond the call of duty, but thought I'd check to see if anyone has any suggestions: Often users modify a field but remain in that field, they do not commit the record by clicking the blank space on the layout. Obviously this means that that record is locked so no one else can modify it. The suggestion has been to have an automated timer commit script. Hello all, I was wondering if you could help me? I have a portal for service records for equipment with each portal line being a different certificate. On this portal line i have a retest date. We have been missing some services for customers and this has created problems so on the main customer screen i wanted a field in company details showing the latest retest date. I feel like I should know how to do this, but when I think about it, the only ways I know how to do it will not allow another part of what I want. What I'm after is to make something like a rolodex. The way I know how to do it, you end up with a list of found records, with a script for the alphabetical "filter," when you want that. Hello Forum: I portion of my database is using the "Dynamically Filtering Filtered Portals" by Sara Severson found on the Soliant Consulting website (for some reason I can't paste a link). I've setup a form in the webviewer and the form has a submit button, which currently uses the post method to a php page which then populates my FileMaker database using the the FileMaker API for PHP.
